2041 Claremont Lane About The House The classic red-brick home tugs at the heartstrings. It is emblematic of comfort, security and prosperity. It feels established, mature. The five-bedroom home at 2041 Claremont Lane is all of this, with the added benefit of exceptional interior design details. It’s settled on a large River Oaks lot just a few blocks north of St. John’s School. Architect W. Travis Mattingly of Architectural Solutions, Inc., designed the easy-to-live-in floorplan that accommodates a large family comfortably, while interior designer Julie Dodson has conceived the suite of downstairs formals that are clearly intended to impress. From the estate-sized fireplaces to the homework station with built-in desks, from sprawling game room to a 19th-century French chandelier in the powder room, from gorgeous Venetian plaster by Segreto Finishes to a gentle-jetted laundry sink for washing lace delicates, no consideration has been overlooked. Is it any wonder that 2041 Claremont Lane has been featured in a number of publications, including Elle Décor and Southern Home? In addition to its five bedrooms (all up) and seven full and two half baths, this house has abundant windows and French doors opening onto the rear garden, plus wide-plank French oak floors, 11-foot ceilings, three fireplaces and an elevator shaft. The kitchen has been conceived for the serious cook, with high-end appliances (see details on the inside back cover) and expansive work surfaces. Adjoining the kitchen are a separate breakfast room, walk-in pantry, butler’s pantry, mud room, wet bar, wine vault and house manager’s office. Outside, the landscape design is by Thompson + Hanson, and at 16,000-plus square feet, there’s plenty of room for a pool, kitchen garden, fruit trees and/or putting green. Best of all, the covered rear veranda and summer kitchen face east and are protected from the harsh western sun during the cocktail hour. Easy to furnish, you’ll find 2041 Claremont Lane accommodates almost any style of furnishings: American antiques, Art Deco, polished transitional or an art lover’s contemporary collection.
Architecture The Neoclassical style – long favored by the architects of ambitious public buildings and mansions – is marked, primarily, by symmetry and order. The style emerged in the mid-18th century in response to the flamboyance of Baroque and Rococo design. Neoclassicism is evident in 2041 Claremont Lane, which offers a street view that is symmetrically pure and balanced. Evenly spaced windows are set across the front façade, which is anchored in the middle by an elaborate entry. The house has an uncluttered appearance and grandeur of scale. Even the landscaping is balanced. Although this house was built in 2010, it projects the feeling of a historic home.
Neighborhood Founded by the Hogg Brothers and attorney Hugh Potter in the 1920s, River Oaks is Houston’s premier residential neighborhood, located conveniently close to the central business district and to the city’s main retail, arts and medical areas. Since its creation, River Oaks has been published in national news, real estate and design media and been the focus of scholarly analysis in recognition of its contributions to the 20th-century American elite community development. Property values have been protected and enhanced by strong deed restrictions, subdivision governance and architectural preservation. The subdivision, home to the River Oaks Country Club and numerous pocket parks, is patrolled by a 24-hour proprietary security service.
