4002 Overbrook Lane
House
Set behind a frosted glass and iron gate that opens into a hydrangea-splashed garden, 4002 Overbrook is an example of the International Style. The style was so named by Philip Johnson and Henry-Russell Hitchcock in 1932 and is characterized by an emphasis on volume, asymmetrical composition and minimal ornamentation. Sometimes called “minimalist” architecture, the International Style is known for the way a building’s rectangular volumes are arranged so as to often seem nearly weightless.
Clearly intended to impress, the front door opens from the garden portico into an entrance hall with a 19-foot ceiling. It’s a model of design restraint, just wood, light and air. The home has an inverted layout: The first floor provides two useful and beautiful bedrooms and a comfortable TV room/study. Take the elevator or wide staircase to the second floor with its formal living room, dining room, kitchen and office.
This is the kind of home that would look smashing with either modern furniture or antiques, maybe some chinoiserie or a few primitive pieces included. Need a visual? Imagine a contemporary London townhome with a private walled garden, creamy walls, custom millwork, soaring ceilings and four-inch red oak floors. Built in 2007, the home has had just one owner.
Architect
The late architect Reagan Miller began work on 4002 Overbrook with a sketch on a napkin while having lunch at Ouisie’s Table with the homeowner and her interior designer Bob Montgomery. It would take the three of them four years to complete the home. The owner, whose grandfather had been an ambassador to a South American country in the mid-20th century, was renowned for her graceful taste and intimate dinner parties. She wanted a home where she could display her family’s rare objets and paintings, and thus there are acres of wall space for hanging art. The walled front garden, designed and installed by McDugald Steele, is a nod to the importance of creating inside-out views.
Neighborhood
Oak Estates is a “pocket neighborhood” across the street from River Oaks. In fact, it was developed in the 1940s by S.N. Adams, who had once been a builder for the River Oaks Corporation and who also developed the adjacent Highland Village Shopping Center. The neighborhood is ideally located between Downtown Houston and The Galleria and is near some of the city’s best public and private schools. Its residents support an established HOA that maintains common areas, promotes aesthetic standards and enforces deed restrictions. Oak Estates attracts residents who covet its peaceful ambiance, handsome homes, mature trees and a delightfully short stroll to Highland Village and Central Market.
