Catch the Spirit ... Building on Our Past

Shortly after the Great Fire of2001, President Patricia P. Cormier promised the alumni and campus community that "the Ruffners are going to be rebuilt and they will be rebuilt in the way in which theywere designed. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, the Ruffners and our beloved Rotunda will live again."

hereforashorttimebeforetheRotunda

burnedInevertrulyunderstoodwhatit meanttothiscampus-howjustone buildingcouldreallysymbolizetheheart ofacollege.

I had the opportunity to pass through its doors. When it comes time to open those the doors once again, you, too, will feel the essence of love, cherished memories, and the spirit of Longwood run deep into your heart. fu the catalog of 1904-05 stated, "By fall, a second new building will be nearing completion In the center of this building is a spacious new reception hall with an arcade open to the roof and there crowned with a graceful dome, decorated on the interior with beautiful paintings, the copies of well known pictures."

Even then the Rotunda's elegance and grace astounded all who looked upon its magnificent structure. Imagine how wonderful it must have been to watch the creation of something so miraculous and meaningful.Well, you don't have to imagine it, because you are now a part of it. You, too, are experiencing the glory and wonder of watching the Rotunda being built like it was in 1904.

The dome, which made the Rotunda a unique piece on the campus of Longwood was covered in murals, painted by Italian artist Eugene D. Malfonconi in 1905. "Eugene B. Malfonconi was commissioned to paint the interior of the dome: portraits ofJefferson and Horace Mann who symbolized the educational philosophy of the Normal School, and ofJ.L. Monroe Curry and William Ruffner who had been responsible for the School's existence, and interspersed with Delsarte-draped female figures symbolizing the institutions four purposes-Study, Meditation, Recreation, and Rest." (LongwoodCollege:A History)

The murals are being restored by Page Conservation Inc. ofWashington, D.C., and will be hung in the new dome. Other surviving artifacts such as paintings, plaques, trophies, etc., removed during the renovation prior to the fire, will be returned to their rightful places of honor when construction is complete.

Some new items included in the reconstruction of the Rotunda are museum-like displays that will be placed throughout the building. There is an Anthropology work area where tools and findings can be washed and thoroughly investigated. There will now be floor outlets in the classrooms of the Rotunda and new flat screenTV's in the hallway walls.

It will now be brighter because windows have been redone and new lighting fixtures installed. Before, it had been neon lighting, which was located in the dome. "The neon circular light, which was what the Rotunda used for its lighting, had over a hundred years of dust on top of it, and was just worn out," stated Fred Kuntz, architect for the project.

Natural light will also bask the interior of the rotunda according to Mr. Kuntz, because a skylight will be included at the top of the dome: "The original did have a skylight, but it was covered over years ago because of leaks. The skylight will make our new rotunda more like the original designers intended."

I could tell that Mr. Kuntz holds this project near and dear to his heart. Every effort has been made to be historically accurate and true to the original. The architects and English Construction have gone to great lengths to replicate the look and feel of the Ruffners. The new windows lookjust like their predecessors, only they are made with modern, durable materials. The doorknobs match the original design. Mirrors will have mahogany trim and antique finish.

Although the feel and look of the building will capture the spirit of the original, there will be new amenities and improvements to the infrastructure, including central heat and air conditioning, an elevator system, and small lobbies and study nooks for students to sit, study, or chat before class.

The Rotunda and Ruffners are on schedule and will be ready for occupancy in the fall of 2005. fu I reflect about the past and realize the significance of memories and traditions, I am glad to know that those legacies will continue for future generations of Longwood students. As Dr. Cormier said, "the Ruffners and our beloved Rotunda will live again." @

Meeting the aggressive Annual Fund goal for a turningpoint: The Campaign for Longwood required increased participation from alumni and parents and continued support from current donors.
