SUPER SUNDAE

Although Blackwell Dining Hall will never compare to Mom's cooking you must admit Rick Johnson and his staff have made a tremendous effort to improve. They have given us theme dinners, a real salad and sandwich bar, and great desserts. One of those great desserts was Super Sundae. This sundae was over three feet tall and had everything on oreo cookies.

Coach Ruth Budd has learned a lot about gymnastics and people during her nine years as head coach of Longwood gymnastics team. "When I first arrived in 1977, things were certainly different from today," she reminisces. "The team practiced in French Gym, where there wasn't enough space to set up all our equipment at one time. The level of gymnastics was very low, and my first year we had only two girls the

on scholarship. Things began to change when Budd recruited Maryland gymnast Kathy Idelson, who went on to become Longwood's first AU-American athlete in any sport. "Thanks to Kathy, people began to hear about Longwood gymnastics, and we received inquiries from many top-level gymnasts. After taking competitors to National Championships for four years in a row and having them place well, our reputation began to improve."

SOCCER

Longwood soccer coach Rich Posipanko has been voted Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association "Coach of the Year" for the second time in his career. The honor was voted by the VISA coaches. Posipanko, who led Longwood to its third state title in five years this fall, has an outstanding 88-41-18 record in eight years with the Lancers. He guided LC to a 13-5-2 mark and a 14th place national ranking

in Division II.

Also, picked as

VISA's top coach

in

1982, Posipanko led

Longwood

to state titles in

1982 and 1984.

Longwood's Jeff Robinson and Mark Kremen combined on the decisive goal as the Lancer soccer team stunned highly regarded Christopher-Newport 2-1 in overtime November 19 to capture its third Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association Championship in the past five years. With less than two minutes left in the second overtime and the game tied 1-1, Robinson raced toward the Captains' goal and fired a cross pass just before he went out of bounds. The kick went straight to Kremen on the opposite side of the goal. The junior knocked in the pass for a 2-1 Lancer lead and as it turned out, the victory. at first," Kremen explained later. "I thought he (Robinson) was going to shoot, Roz hit a rocket and I just stepped in and hit it." Ironically, it was Kremen who scored the tying goal in the second overtime of the 1984 VISA Championship game which produced a 3-3 tie with Mary Washington. The Lancers were co-State Champs that season after winning the title outright in 1982. The victory was a high water mark for the Lancers, who missed out on a bid to the NCAA Division II

Coach Rich Posipanko felt this year's title game was the most exciting of Longwood's VISA title matches. "This one came against an outstanding team, a team with a lot of quick athletes", said the coach. "The game went end to end. We played hard all the way after they scored. We outplayed them the rest of the game."

Four members of Longwood's State Champion soccer team have been named to the Division II AllSouth Atlantic Region soccer team, voted by the region coaches. Freshmen John Barone and Mike Edge, Junior Jeff Robinson and senior Erick Karn were the Lancers

named All-Region. The foursome played

a big role in Longwood's 13-5-2 season and 2-1 triumph over Christopher-

Newport in the Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association title game November 19. Robinson and Karn are backs while Barone is a forward and Edge a midfielder. Barone, Edge and Robinson had previously been named to the first team of the Virginia Intercollegiate Soccer Association All-State selections.

Karn made the second team along with goalkeeper Dave Goerkle, and midfielder Mahfoud Kyoud. Longwood landed seven spots on the AU-VISA Eastern Division teams announced earlier.

TENNIS

Longwood's women's tennis coach Bill Moore is excited about this years squad. The Lady Lancer's performance in their three outings brings hope of future success. This year's squad is experienced with seven returnees and has an infusion of new talent that will help guarantee success. Senior Ann Pitzer will lead the team, playing in the number one spot. Coach Moore thinks that sophomores Susan Miller, Lisa Storm, Elizabeth Cho and Traci Moore will be the most improved because they are older and won't make "freshman first

mistakes."

The other veterans on the squad are junior Diane Rogers and sophomore Mary Lynn Lawman. Newcomers include freshmen Laura Crigger, Lauri Labyak, Cassie Merritt, Sarah Thomson and junior Marieska Weigel. Coach Moore will look towards Crigger and Labyak for help in doubles and hopes to use the fall season to gain experience for all the players to use in the spring season.

FRAZIER FIRE

At approximately 7:00 a.m. on the morning of April 28, 1987 two males ran through the halls of fire. These, and other brave people, saved many lives because the fire alarms would not go off. Even though the building was filling with black smoke. It seems that because of faulty electrical wiring a speaker caught on fire. When the owner tried to throw the speaker out the window, the tie dye that was hanging from the ceiling immediately ignited. The room was gutted and the floor up above melted. The fire was contained to one end of the hall, however, the smoke damage was extensive. There were a few minor injuries but basicall y Frazier residents were able to exit the building unscathed. The residents will always remember what happened as well as what could have happened. Frazier banging on doors and yelling

MY PAGE ...

I

fast,

would like to take a few moments to reflect over this past year. It has gone by so and now its time to find a job and use all of those skills we acquired at Longwood.

Graduation

is

a scary and exciting time for us seniors.

Some

of us will get married,

and some are continuing their education. But most of the seniors do not have the slightest idea what the future holds. We finally shed those

Just

remember

seniors,

you can even turn rejection

into a positive experience.
