The North-West College in Londonderry has once again highlighted its commitment to demanding professional standards with the selection of one of its automotive course students for the World Skills final this coming August in the Russian city of Kazan. Declan Porter is currently in the penultimate year of his Master Technician diploma with four years study behind him at the college’s motor vehicle department. Keeping a close eye on his development is Barry Mc Daid, department lecturer and Training Manager for Team UK World Skills. Speaking of Declan’s success, he says, “Technology within the automotive industry is changing so fast and requires dedicated, skilled people like Declan. “His hard work, perseverance, skill and determination have brought him to the top of his game where he is now competing among the best in the world.” -Pat Burns, Editor

DONNELLY GROUP PARTNERS WITH NI HOSPICE To MAKE DONATION FOR EVERY HONDA JAZZ SOLD

D

onnelly Group, Northern Ireland’s largest familyowned vehicle retailer, has teamed up with the Northern Ireland Hospice to donate £100 for every new and used Honda Jazz that is sold across all their Donnelly Honda showrooms between 3rd and 10th June 2019. Dave Sheeran, Managing Director at Donnelly Group, said: “We are massively proud to support a local charity that sees all funds raised used to care for adults, children and infants in Northern Ireland with life-limiting conditions. As a local family business with more than 700 employees across the province, this is a cause close to many hearts. “We are therefore making a £100 donation to the charity for every Honda Jazz sold 3rd-10th June. Recent and ongoing studies

highlight the importance of music therapy in the treatment of patients undergoing palliative care and this is just one of the wonderful services offered by the Northern Ireland Hospice which is why we decided it was the perfect charity to donate to.” Northern Ireland Hospice is a leading provider of specialist palliative care in Northern Ireland and annually cares for over 4000 infants, children and adults. Heather Weir, Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Hospice said: “The total cost of running the Northern Ireland Hospice is approximately £40,000 every single day and we are enormously grateful to the Donnelly Group for the support in running this donation

offer. “There is a great synergy between the Honda Jazz model and of course music therapy, offered at both our adult hospice and children’s hospice, which can

be used very effectively to help patients manage pain and the many emotions experienced throughout palliative care. contact the Honda team: www.donnellygroup.co.uk/ honda/

Batteries excluded from Offensive Weapons Bill

T

he Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has announced that following intense lobbying over the last year in conjunction with several of its members and the British Battery Industry Federation (BBIF), the Government has now confirmed that batteries will be excluded from the Offensive Weapons Act, avoiding significant implications for the aftermarket. The Offensive Weapons Act is primarily aimed at guns and knife crime but also covers acid attacks, following the spate of incidents experienced in London and elsewhere last year. Prior to IAAF’s intervention, all automotive batteries were within scope of the legislation. This meant it would have been illegal to sell batteries to under 18 year olds and would have effectively banned

4- garageTRADER

deliveries to private addresses, with ramifications for the industrial, leisure and mobility sectors. Back in January, IAAF chief executive Wendy Williamson met with the Home Office’s Serious Violent and Weapons Unit, in conjunction with the BBIF and IAAF representatives, where they explained the ‘unintended consequences’ of this legislation on the automotive battery sector. Their main argument was the difficulty in extracting battery acid and there being insufficient concentration to cause permanent harm. They were able to help convince the Government to change the proposed legislation to exclude all batteries, after the Act was enacted and became law on the 16th May which confirmed the exclusion.

time capsule filled with local school children’s ‘car of the future’ artwork has been buried in celebration of Shelbourne Motors’£5m multi-franchise complex in Newry. The family-owned vehicle retailer invited children from neighbouring St Patrick’s Primary School and Mullaglass Primary School to draw or paint their car of the future. The fantastic pieces of artwork joined a collection of Shelbourne Motors memorabilia in a time capsule buried on the site of the new stateof-the-art facility by pupils. The £5m facility, that is scheduled to open later this year, will

Shelbourne Motors was founded by the Ward Family in 1973. It currently employs over 130 staff at its 9-acre Portadown

headquarters, where it operates Toyota, Renault, Nissan and Dacia franchises, as well as a Used Car Supermarket, Accident Repair Centre and Valet Centre.

TP Topping Enniskillen to close

fter 88 years in business, Enniskillen car dealership TP Topping will close its doors for good this summer. The car garage, located on the Dublin road has been trading since 1931 and directors, Peter Little and Ronald Hurst, have conceded that it has not been an easy decision to make but that they felt it was “the right time to wind down the business.” Mr.Little said that there was a great deal of “sadness” involved in making the decision but that “it was time tolet go.” Mr. Little’s grandfather was involved in the initial establishment of the business and Mr. Little himself was the third generation of his family to run the business. He retired from the day to day operations at T.P Topping three years ago while fellow director Mr. Hurst retired last year. “I am 70 now, and that tends to focus the mind,” Mr.Little said; “I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the

motor trade. A lot has changed over the years. Some of our staff have been with us for 40 years or more. They are great staff and we would like to think that with their skills that they will gain employment elsewhere,” he stated. Reflecting on where the business, and indeed the motor trade industry stands now, Mr. Little said that things might have been different had both he and Mr. Hurst been younger: “I think if we were both maybe twenty or thirty years younger we might look at things differently, we might look to re-invest and go again but we are at a different stage of life now. I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and grandchildren now.” Mr. Little concluded by saying that the time was right for the business to close its doors. “It really is just a generational thing. I am at retirement age and while it was obviously a difficult decision to make and a decision where there is

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

a lot of sadness attached to it, we do feel it is the right time to let go.” A recent statement from T.P Topping said that it “was especially difficult to inform their loyal staff” of the closure. In the statement Mr. Hurst said: “However, we are confident that with the company’s assistance all staff will have secured suitable employment by the time the doors are finally closed in summer. The company had been very fortunate to have had such a committed

workforce, many of whom have never worked anywhere else.” Mr. Hurst went on to thank the company’s loyal customers, many of whom he said were friends who had done business with the firm over several generations. There will be a sale of used and new cars in the coming months as well as a sale of Ford and Land Rover spareparts. The company revealed that the property on the Dublin Road will be placed for sale towards the end of 2019. garageTRADER - 5

CONTINENTAL

Continental expands CV belts range

C

ontinental is expanding its range of drive belts for the commercial vehicle aftermarket. More than 40 multi V-belts for the auxiliary drive have been added. These feature profile codes 4PK, 6PK, 8PK, 10 PK and 12PK – i.e. ranging from the narrow variant with four ribs to the widest with twelve. These are used, for example, in Mercedes-Benz, MAN and DAF buses and trucks. Continental’s new offering is aimed at independent commercial vehicle workshops, haulage companies with their own workshops and component wholesalers. The new multi V-belts are made of fiber-reinforced synthetic rubber with a polyester tension member. Continental manufactures its drive belts for the aftermarket to the same quality standards as its original equipment products, which are specially designed to meet the requirements of modern commercial vehicle units. That means workshops operating in the aftermarket can enjoy the same proven quality as original

equipment. “Mechanics can therefore ensure the level of operational reliability in buses and trucks that millions of people rely on every day,” says Continental product manager Robert Franz. Continental offers registered

workshops a 5-year guarantee on the new products. Further belts for Volvo, Scania, Renault and Iveco commercial vehicles are scheduled to be added to the range by the fall of this year.

“Our aim is to simplify workshops’ everyday operations and offer drive products for a manufacturer’s entire vehicle line-up from a single source – ranging from light delivery trucks through to tractor units for longhaul transport operations.”

WILLIS INSURANCE Employment Practices Liability: Be Prepared

E

mployment-related legal actions are a growing concern for employers of all sizes. As costs for litigation and damage awards climb, experts predict that employment liability will only become more complex. As a result, it is critical for employers to understand their exposures and options to manage the risk. Two effective risk management strategies include solid human resources practices and employment practices liability insurance (EPLI) cover, a policy used to cover your risk due to the ever-changing legal and employment environment. Some of the most common employment-related claims today involve: • Working Time Directives • Unfair Dismissal • Discrimination - the denial of equal treatment of workers who are members of a protected class • Unauthorised Deductions • Breach of Contract Employment practices liability

insurance (EPLI) works handin-hand with your internal employment practices to provide the necessary resources to defend your company against a legal action or to pay a claim. To best understand how to cover your EPLI risk, it’s important to know the potential sources: • Recruitment practices; • Employment applications; • Employment offers; • Employee orientation; • Annual conduct reviews; • Enforcing performance policies; • Termination; and • Improper documentation of the above items Limiting your exposures, engaging in solid human resources practices is an important strategy in reducing your company’s liability. To verify your HR policies and best practices, conduct a thorough HR audit: • Verify the Employee Handbook outlines all policies and terms of

employment in clear as well as concise language; • Require employees to sign an acknowledgement form for receipt of Handbook; and Develop training for supervisors including interview skills, performance reviews, ‘zero tolerance’ policy, etc. Employment law is often complex and around 15 changes are made annually. Keeping current with the changes can be a heavy burden on employers. Well- organised and credible documents can demonstrate fair treatment, deter litigation, ensure employee honesty and, should litigation occur, demonstrate the employer’s actions. In addition to having the appropriate employment policies and HR best practices in place, EPLI cover is another useful risk management tool used to defend against a legal action or pay a claim. Typically, the insurance underwriter will require a copy of your employee handbook, which can cover the following policies:

Schaeffler GT Schaeffler thrilled with Automechanika Birmingham 2019 experience

S

chaeffler has hailed its stand at Automechanika Birmingham 2019 as its ‘best ever’, following three days of exhibiting at the National Exhibition Centre, where it offered visitors a glimpse at the ‘garage of tomorrow’. The stand, located in the OESAA village, featured a striking workshop setting with a Schaeffler BMW M4 DTM car, plus augmented and mixed reality exhibits. It certainly grabbed the attention of technicians and distributors alike, with feedback from visitors overwhelmingly positive. Because there was so much for visitors to see and do, the stand was constantly busy across all three days, with Schaeffler UK Aftermarket Marketing and Communications Manager, Jeff Earl, describing it as “one of the most exciting, interactive and innovative visitor experiences we have ever produced”. Visitors took full advantage of the high-tech exhibits, which allowed technicians to get up close-and-personal with a technical ‘helpline’ of the future. Wearing goggles, which relayed heads-up instructions, technicians were able to carry out a simulated timing chain replacement using real tools and components, or learn about the inner workings of a dual mass flywheel. They were designed to show how repairs could be made easier and quicker in the future, utilising support from the likes of Schaeffler, with its interactive, live and online

instructions. Switching to augmented reality, visitors were able to use an iPad to scan each individual component of a complete FAG chassis system, breaking down and exploring each single part using images and videos, as well as giving lots of hints and tips. One of the visiting technicians, the manager of a new start-up business, said: “We’re already purchasing a lot of Schaeffler equipment from a local distributor, and it’s nice to be able to come onto the stand and have a chat with the REPXPERTs and discover more about the products and what they’ve got planned for the future.” Another technician from an independent workshop added: “Schaeffler is always developing innovative ideas, so it’s useful to see what the latest developments

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

are. As an independent workshop, we don’t always see these products until two or three years down the line. It’s important we futureproof our business; we need to keep up-to-date with the times and adapt with them, rather than be left behind.” Automechanika Birmingham 2019 was also the perfect platform for Schaeffler to launch the REPXPERT app. Designed to make it simpler and quicker for members to access the online portal, REPXPERTs can now source part numbers and product details for all Schaeffler repair solutions, as well as being able to access invaluable technical data – all from the palm of their hands. Meanwhile, around 300 Schaeffler VIPs were treated to an informative presentation and audio tour, followed by lunch on the stand, before taking away an exclusive REPXPERT technician’s messenger bag. Another 300 REPXPERT VIPs also enjoyed lunch and a goody bag, before many of them took the opportunity to enter the INA Torque Challenge competition. Schaeffler gave away eight torque wrenches

every day to technicians that performed the best after learning about the importance of using correct torque settings. Finally, Edd China visited the stand on Wednesday and Thursday to sign his new book, Grease Junkie. Edd signed several copies for Schaeffler VIP guests, as well as touring the stand to see if there was any innovative Schaeffler technology that he could incorporate into his next project! garageTRADER - 19

Troubleshooting - Brake Pads _Layout 1 27/06/2019 13:52 Page 1

Troubleshooting guide - Brake Pads A regular and thorough inspection is very important to the proper operation of your braking system and should be included in your regular maintenance program. The following information is designed to help identify common problems that may be encountered during service. The problems below are not covered by warranty as they do not identify a fault with the component.

Tapered Pads A tapered pad will show a different thickness at one end of the pad and will cause uneven braking pressure and noise. This is usually caused by a distorted caliper, sticking caliper or excessive caliper clearance. The pads should be replaced and the caliper checked.

Uneven Wear A pad that is unevenly worn across the surface is indicated by deep grooves. This will usually cause squeal and brake judder. The disc will also show corresponding grooves across the braking surface. If this problem occurs both the brake disc and pad should be replaced.

Denaturing A denatured pad will show partially charred friction material evident by the white outer edges. This is caused by prolonged excessive temperatures, due to intensive use, dragging or faulty caliper. This causes a reduction in the braking efficiency and the material becomes brittle and breaks up. If this occurs the pads must be replaced.

Surface Contamination If the surface of the friction material becomes contaminated with oil, grease or brake fluid it can cause a vast reduction in braking performance on one side of the vehicle. This can cause the vehicle to pull to one side when braking. If this problem occurs the pads should be replaced immediately

Damaged Pads A damaged pad is usually caused by excessive heat which causes the friction material to become brittle and begin to break up. If this problem occurs it is important to determine the cause of the excessive heat. This is usually a result of improperly balanced braking system, or a faulty caliper.

Uneven Wear Within a Set

If one pad is more worn than its corresponding one then this is caused by one side of the caliper sticking. This will cause the brake to pull to one side and will accelerate pad wear to one side of the set. If this problem occurs it is important to service the caliper and replace the pad set.

Cracked Pads If small cracks appear in the brake pad, this is usually caused by incorrect flexing of the pad due to a sticking caliper. The piston bends the backplate causing the friction material to crack. If this occurs it is important to service the caliper and replace the pads.

Glazing A glazed pad emits a reflective surface and can cause a reduction in the braking performance. This is usually due to excessive temperatures or excessive harsh braking during the bedding in period. If the performance is impaired then the pads must be replaced.

KYB

KYB Double Hydraulic Stops System

I

nitially launched in 2017, the Citroën C5 Aircross has KYB as the Original Equipment supplier for shock absorbers. Initial reviews in the automotive press branded the vehicle as: “an ultra-comfortable hatchback with a unique personality”, with the “suspension improving comfort at a moderate cost” and following one test drive, “even before we’d driven our first mile, the improvements in comfort and overall refinement are little short of astonishing”. With advances in the automotive industry, active suspension is quickly becoming a reality in passenger cars and semi-active solutions are also on the rise. Many vehicle manufacturers are now opting for active suspension systems. KYB have worked closely alongside PSA to develop a suspension concept based on passive shock absorbers, capable of merging high performance with competitive costs. The system was developed and applied to the Citroën C5 Aircross and has been named by Citroën as ‘Progressive

Hydraulic Cushions’. But what makes Citroën’s Progressive Hydraulic Cushions different from the suspension systems with which we are most familiar? The secret of this revolutionary concept is a double hydraulic stops system. Whilst a typical suspension system has what is commonly referred to as a ‘bump-stop’ to soften any harsh movement, Citroën have instead incorporated two hydraulic ‘cushions’. Specifically designed to adapt to different road conditions, one cushion carefully controls compression, with the other controlling rebound. When driving in normal conditions, these stops give the spring and shock absorber greater freedom of movement, delivering what Citroën refer to as a “flying carpet” effect, thus creating the impression that the car is flying over any bumps in the road. When more demanding situations are encountered, the hydraulic cushions work with the shocks and springs to gradually slow any harsh movement. Whilst a normal bump stop would absorb the

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

energy and return it, the hydraulic stop absorbs and dissolves the energy. This means that there is no rebound, giving a more comfortable ride. KYB Europe’s General Manager for Aftermarket Product Management, Jean François Huan, explains “this is another great example of the pioneering research and development which our OE engineers are famous for. I look forward to seeing how this new technology develops in our market”. KYB was able to develop a system that combines robustness with a wide tuning range, thus providing the vehicle with a soft damping when comfort is demanded and excellent handling when control is needed. These features are met with a passive system which assures an unbeatable response time and a competitive cost. KYB is working to apply the double hydraulic stop system in other vehicles in the European market like the Citroën C4 Cactus. garageTRADER - 23

Aftermarket

OE dampers for the aftermarket

D

ayco, a leading engine products and drive systems supplier for the automotive, industrial and aftermarket industries, is also a major player in the production of original equipment (OE) torsional vibration dampers, which it manufactures for many prominent vehicle manufacturers, both automotive and heavy-duty, across Europe and around the world. Modern powerplants are highly engineered to deliver the optimum combination of power and torque, alongside fuel efficiency and minimal exhaust emissions. This objective often comes at the cost of high levels of engine vibration, which is generally intensified by the significant pressures present in the engine’s combustion chambers, an occurrence especially prevalent with diesel units. This vibration is transmitted through the crankshaft and therefore has a significant impact on the engine’s power transmission drive systems. To reduce this problem, Dayco engineers have developed the damper pulley or DPV. Generally installed directly to the crankshaft, the damper reduces the circular vibrations that cause the primary problem, decreasing wear on many of the engine’s components. Naturally, the front end auxiliary drive (FEAD) system is a principal beneficiary, which increases the durability of the entire powerplant and improves comfort for the vehicle’s occupants. There are three types of damper that, depending on the application, are generally installed: the simple, double and decoupler. Rather than being connected straight to the crankshaft, the simple damper is integrated within the FEAD system, as this provides sufficient vibration reduction for applications with standard NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) requirements. The double damper encompasses two rubber elements within its 36- garageTRADER

metal parts, which are designed to absorb vibration at different frequencies, and is for use in applications that generate high power and increased vibration, such as modern diesel engines. Although the decoupler damper still incorporates a rubber ring, the damping function is carried out through metal springs, as opposed to solely relying on its rubber element. It is used on the latest generation engines with greater power and enables the FEAD system to cope with high mileage and adverse conditions, particularly for applications that feature a BSG (belt start generator) function. Damper Replacement Naturally, as with every wearing part, over the course of time and as the vehicle’s mileage increases, problems can occur and the damper can lose its efficiency or sometimes even break, which itself obviously increases the risk of failure in other parts of the engine’s drive systems. To avoid these problems, dampers should be checked for signs of wear, such as abnormal noises, unpleasant vibrations or even steering oscillations, at every 40,000 mile interval or when replacing the auxiliary belt. However, as a matter of course and irrespective of the signs, Dayco suggests they are changed every time the timing belt is renewed. Technicians must be aware however, that in order to check the damper correctly, it needs to be removed from the engine because the back, as well as the front needs to be examined to fully assess its condition. In addition, whether it needs to be replaced or not, the bolts must be changed, as they are

designed to stretch on initial fitment and will no longer meet their design tolerances if reused. Aftermarket Solutions In common with all the products that Dayco manufactures, its DPVs are produced in the same facilities, to identical standards, so whether the damper is destined for OE or aftermarket supply, it is of the highest quality, which provides peace-of-mind to both the workshop and its customer. For maximum convenience and to ensure the highest standards are maintained during its installation,

NORTH-WEST REGIONAL COLLEGE AUTOMOTIVE DEPARTMENT

T e o re c

T

he North-West Regional College in Londonderry has recently introduced new equipment to both motor vehicle workshops on its Springtown site. Designed primarily as a vocational complex, the motor vehicle department moved from the city’s main Strand Road campus a few years ago to facilitate the multistorey expansion that now stands on the original workshops. The move provided new facilities with more space for both the engineering and body repair workshops. The Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Course embraces the total work requirements of a motor vehicle technician. This ranges from the communication skills required to liaise with customers as well as the workshop skills. These include standard servicing, repairs and maintenance, road testing vehicles to check repairs, and fitting and servicing accessories like stereos and alarms. Emphasis is on the supporting use of the latest technologies with students encouraged to participate in

national competitions to enhance their CVs. Mainstay equipment are the Block Automotive engine rigs which are fully functional petrol and diesel units from mainstream manufacturers such as Opel / Vauxhall and VAG Group. However, the inbuilt teaching feature of the rigs is the inclusion of pin-out facilities and fault insertion to assist in the diagnostic training and understanding of modern vehicle systems. The department has just taken delivery of their first hybrid rig, based on the Toyota Prius but again with the facility to introduce faults. The addition of the new rig maintains the department’s cutting edge teaching syllabus which offers full-time diploma courses in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair. Acknowledging that vehicle maintenance and repairs are becoming increasingly technical, the department lists what it considers to be important skills for any young person – male or female

– planning to enter the course.

Important Skills

1. Customer service skills 2. Diagnostic skills 3. Work ethic 4. Problem-solving skills 5. Technical aptitude 6. A wide array of knowledge 7. Resourcefulness 8. Experience The body repair workshop is the base for the Motor Light Vehicle Body Repair Course which covers the realignment of both the structure and panelling of light and heavy good vehicles. The work is divided between major and minor collision damage and includes making body panels and sections before welding them into place. To deal with lesser but more common damage the department has just installed a CNC lathe capable of refurbishing damaged alloy wheels. With 80% of cars sold in the UK now fitted as standard with alloy wheels, the addition of the Ayce Systems’ CNC lathe provides a fast and

easy-to-use machine which will cut wheels up to 28 inches in diameter. This latest addition from Ayce Systems has a host of new features including improved wheel profile optimisation software, dry run ability, wifi enabled remote support and faster probing cycles. The wheels can them be finished within the department in the original background spoke colour and sealed with the diamond-cut lacquer. The Automotive Department has once again highlighted its commitment to demanding professional standards with the selection of one of its students, Declan Porter, to represent the UK at the World Skills final this coming August in the Russian city of Kazan. The College has long been a supporter of WorldSkills, producing competitors and providing training managers in a number of vocational areas. It prides itself on providing top class training, education and facilities that enable students to compete at this world class level.

WORLD SKILLS SUCCESS FOR NORTH-WEST STUDENT

Declan Porter with lecturer Barry McDaid

T

he North-West College in Londonderry has once again highlighted its commitment to demanding professional standards with the selection of one of its automotive course students for the World Skills final this coming August in the Russian city

of Kazan. Declan Porter is currently in the penultimate year of his Master Technician diploma with four years study behind him at the college’s motor vehicle department. Keeping a close eye on his development is Barry Mc Daid, department

lecturer and Training Manager for Team UK World Skills. Speaking of Declan’s success, he says, “Technology within the automotive industry is changing so fast and requires dedicated, skilled people like Declan. “His hard work, perseverance, skill and determination have brought him to the top of his game where he is now competing among the best in the world. “The College has long been a supporter of World Skills, producing competitors and providing training managers in a number of vocational areas. “It prides itself on providing top class training, education and

facilities that enable students to compete at this world class level. “Competing is not only a challenge for the students, but it has also benefits including developing employability skills, building confidence and improving technical skills to such a high standard. “This is a huge achievement for Declan, and staff as well as his fellow students at NWRC’s Springtown Campus are delighted with his success so far. “To watch him grow in confidence has been inspiring. He has a very steady nature and has really built upon his ability to cope under pressure and deal with competition.” The Automobile Technology challenge progressed through several local and national heats until the competing candidates were eventually channelled down to the sole UK representative. Declan’s journey began with the Northern

NWRC GT Ireland heat held in Omagh, before progressing to the Volkswagen UK headquarters in Milton Keynes for the UK heat under the auspices of the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI). From selection at Milton Keynes, just six were chosen for the final challenge in Birmingham where Declan went through to represent the UK at the 45th World Skills final in Kazan. He will join competitors from more than 60 countries at the Kazan Expo International Exhibition Centre in a challenging programme that begins on 22nd August. The participants will be judged on maintaining light vehicles from various manufacturers, diagnosing complex mechanical problems and delivering solutions within commercial cost and time restraints. The competition is held every two years and in the previous event held in Abu Dhabi, the gold and silver awards were claimed by Chinese competitors with a Japanese student taking bronze. The aim of the World Skills programme is the increased visibility of skilled

professional education as one of the tools of social and economic transformation. Declan’s interest in motor vehicles stems from his father’s body repair business where he says he grew up around cars. When he left secondary school he was determined to train as a motor technician and entered the Master Technician course at the NorthWest College, progressing through each two -year unit to his current position in Level 4. He is currently employed in an independent garage and his ambition is to establish his own business. His trip to the finals in Russia is funded by World Skills UK and it will be Declan’s first trip abroad stopping over in France beforehand for international training. Declan works for Donaghy’s Garage in Burnfoot, Co. Donegal. Denis Donaghy is the owner of the garage and he appreciates the importance of proper training in today’s technologically advanced cars. Denis’s son Barry also studied at NWRC and Barry and Declan work together regularly in the workshop.

Fyfes win contract to support NWRC Leading automotive and engineering distributor Fyfes Vehicle and Engineering Supplies has recently been awarded the contract to supply bespoke equipment to North West Regional College (NWRC) to service their Springtown and Greystone sites. Offering a range of vehicle components, tools, consumables and engineering supplies, Northern Ireland’s largest motor factor has steadily grown its team of specialists for both tools and welding, relied on by high-profile customers in the area such as NWRC for its wealth of industry experience and technical expertise. In Springtown campus, Fyfes supplied the latest CNC alloy refurbishment machine, along with the PowerTec Miracle body repair system, the latest spot welder for boran metals, and a plastic welder for different bumper plastics. For the Limavady campus Fyfes provided a range of the latest vehicle diagnostics systems, including pass-thru machines. Also delivered was a 3-D wheel alignment machine, Hubscan Dynometer, and the ADAS car camera system. On today’s modern vehicle anyone carrying out the latest repairs which have sensors on bumpers, doors, tailgates, etc will need to invest in or utilise someone who has an ADAS camera system to set

up sensors again, or they will fail to reach the required regulations. Fyfes also organised, in both campuses, comprehensive training packages provided by technical support teams from each of the contract suppliers. In addition, Fyfes supported the Greystone campus with a technical evening, with the contract suppliers’ main technical personnel on hand to demonstrate and answer any questions arising from the equipment. Local garages were also in attendance to familiarise themselves with an ever-changing automotive environment. Tony Fyfe, Managing Director, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting the next generation of technicians and aftermarket professionals through supplying our equipment and technical expertise to NWRC.

The presentation began with the key selling points of its filters, covering the features and functions of a good filter, including Bypass Valve Operation, before it moved on to the different types of air, fuel and cabin filters available, illustrating in detail the technology involved. The technical presentation empowered the Fyfe team to enhance their understanding of the various technologies as well as the OE pedigree of the Blue Print brand, when compared to OE and other aftermarket brands. The team were able to hear how each Blue Print filter is designed and manufactured to meet OE standards

through regular destructive and non-destructive testing, as well as gaining insight into Blue Print’s quality control procedure which forms part of its Quality Guarantee. Tony Fyfe, Fyfes Managing Director, said: “One of the most important things is that our staff have sound confidence and knowledge in the products they are selling. Garages want to fit a quality filter product that not only works but offers superior performance, and these training sessions equip our team with the right expertise and understanding of Blue Print’s OE pedigree to be able to communicate this to customers.”

“Throughout this process Fyfes, yet again, demonstrated their ability in supplying products tailored to suit their customers’ specific requirements.” Trading in Ballymena for over 100 years, Fyfes Vehicle and Engineering Supplies Ireland now boasts 15 branches in Northern Ireland along with a depot in ROI operated by sister company Fyfes Car Parts Ireland.
