The manufacturers are: 1. MAN; 2. Volvo; 3. Renault; 4. Iveco (which includes Fiat and Magirus); 5. Daimler (including Mercedes Benz, Fuso, Western Star and Freightliner); 6. DAF These manufacturers were found by the European Commission in June of 2016 to have operated a price cartel, keeping prices higher than they would have been had proper competition been operating in the market. Each truck builder was also found guilty of passing on the costs of meeting environmental standards to customers improperly. They were fined a total of €2.926 billion. Each company named above has admitted fault. Scania were part of the investigation, were found to have been part of the cartel but have appealed the finding. They cannot issue at present against Scania but will in future if it loses the appeal. Any person or firm who has suffered loss as a result of

these anticompetitive practices has a right to bring a claim for damages in the Northern Ireland High Court. Liability will not be an issue. As for the amount of potential claims (quantum), representatives of English claimants have estimated a loss of €10,500 per truck. Claimants will be successful if they can satisfy the following conditions: (a) They purchased new either a medium truck (6 tons to 16 tons) or a new heavy truck (16 tons plus); (b) From one of the above companies between 17th January 1997 and 18th January 2011. NEW Provincewide Claims Co Setup.

P

rovincewide Claims Ltd. started trading in February 2015 and was set up by the eleven brokers who are members of Provincewide Ltd and run by Trevor White. Provincewide Ltd is Northern Ireland’s largest independent insurance broker association. Trevor has gained 31 years of experience within the insurance company claims market and also the independent claims management sector. Trevor, along with his team of eight people, looks after the day to day running of the Provincewide Claims Ltd. and its sister company, Provincewide Car Hire Ltd. Being owned by the eleven Provincewide Ltd members gives the claims company the strength of the larger national companies while retaining that important personal touch of a local business. Provincewide

Provincewide Claims Ltd. Team.

Claims Ltd. may only have been in operation for three and a half years, but the business has gone from strength to strength in that time. The eleven brokers have 28 offices spread right across Northern Ireland and all their clients are looked after by Provincewide Claims Ltd. who handle all aspects of their motor insurance claims. As well as working with the clients own insurers they also work with their panel of solicitors, garages and some third party insurers directly, to recover those “uninsured” losses not covered by the client’s own motor policy. Part of the claims process is to supply hire cars to clients when required and this is done through their sister company Provincewide Car Hire Ltd. which is already well established here. Apart from the motor claims service they also provide a UK and

Ireland-wide breakdown recovery service to their clients. “Brokers have to be different to combat the competition of the internet providers. Many clients

have realised that while the internet can give cheap introductory quotes, when a claim happens the back-up service isn’t there and that is where the service that we provides is invaluable. Having a good claims service assists in the retention of clients and that is why the Provincewide Ltd. members set the company up.” says Trevor. “The members also appreciate they have to work in partnership with those motor insurers who they place business with and by setting up Provincewide Claims Ltd. they have control in the claims process that mitigates claims costs against their partner insurers. “We offer our clients a first class service that guarantees to remove all the hassle when a claim occurs” says Trevor. Provincewide Claims also uses eight recognised repair centres. The eleven members are:

New Man at the helm of FG7

F

G7, one of the largest wholesale suppliers to independently owned motor factors in Ireland has a new man at the helm. Whilst Kevin O’Kane may not have a background in the motor factor industry, he has an impressive knowledge of both Public and Private Sector Management, Business Development, Logistics and a very successful retail background. Originally from Magherafelt he enjoys most sport but is a keen rugby fan, however, with a young family has been retired to the side lines these days. Kevin is keen to add to the great team spirit at FG7.

“I want to keep building on the success of FG7, especially the in a relatively short period by developing further the professional image, with a service that is second to none and which FG7 has become renowned for” he told Garage Trader. After studying Business Development, Kevin’s first professional post was in Leisure Management with Magherafelt District Council before moving on to the retail world with CFC Interiors in Cookstown. With CFC Interiors, being an independent family owned company, Kevin had climbed as far up the ladder as was possible within that business and was seeking to pursue a career that can offer further progression. When FG7 came onto the radar Kevin took some time to research the company and had an opportunity to meet with the five shareholders to hear their vision for its future. When on a tour of the 65,000 square foot dual floored warehouse and on a 4.5 acre site with plans to extend the building Kevin quickly realised this was a very forward thinking and exciting company to be part of where he could see the potential to grow along with the business. He is quick

to acknowledge the hardworking team within FG7 as he highlights how comfortable they made his introduction to the company. He says, “everything you ask for is actioned immediately, the staff here are the most efficient, pleasant and helpful team I have been a part of which is refreshing.” Although only with the company a few months Kevin has hit the ground running having introduced procedures to streamline some existing processes. Employing extra staff to reduce overtime but enhance productivity. Currently working on refining stock levels in the warehouse and ensuring that FG7 are offering the most competitive prices to the valued members who support the group. Introducing the state of the art MAM Cloud system which will be complete before the end of summer, this will only ensure that service will be uninterrupted to all Members meaning that they get quick access to the stock availability at FG7. Hosted a very successful Open Night for all Members and their staff to visit the Warehouse, meet the team and were also treated to some supplier merchandise. Kevin said, “this was a fantastic opportunity for me to meet everyone that I hadn’t already had the chance to but also to show off the facility which the staff here can be proud of the fact they helped to create.” When given the opportunity to join the shareholders in Frankfurt at the first Global One Automotive meeting, Kevin jumped at the chance to learn more about the industry and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. “It was great to meet similar minded people, exchange opinion on different matters, suppliers and experiences, this all helped give me scope for the

future of FG7.” Subsequently he has already confirmed meetings in headquarters with leading Global One brands but all Kevin would say for now is “watch this space”. With FG7 supplying 31 Motor Factors, both North and South of Ireland, Brexit is a common topic of conversation “We are watching the issue very closely,” but there is a lot of uncertainty with it so at FG7 we will address that when the outcome becomes clear. Growth and trade continue to be strong and with new members requesting daily to be a part of the group there is great potential for further expansion right across Ireland and we will carry on supplying to our members both sides of the border. On the plans to open a warehouse in the south of Ireland Kevin says “This will of course open a world

of opportunity for us and will be exciting to be part of. Logistically we must work out the best location for this to ensure we can offer the same service to all of our members” With constant changes in the market we are ‘geared for the future’ to ensure that the product range is up to date, and our team monitor this daily. We will continue to offer the fast, professional service and delivery from warehouse to branch up to four times per day all the while addressing any improvements necessary which includes adding to a very eye-catching fleet. “There is great potential for further development of the FG7 brand and with our professional team, I look forward to expanding the FG7 name across Ireland.” garageTRADER - 15

Keep Your Diesel on the Road with Automotive Brands

M

OT laws are about to get really tough as part of the push to get diesels off the road, and Automotive Brands’ products are helping diesel vehicles to meet the tighter specifications and pass their MOT. Major fault: Visible smoke of any colour Any vehicle fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF – fitted on all diesels made from 2009 onwards) will automatically fail their MOT if there is visible smoke of any colour emitted from the exhaust. Fortunately, Automotive Brands have a few products which can help fix the cause of the smoke in the first place, improving the condition of the vehicle as well as enabling it to pass its MOT. Black/Bluish Smoke Automotive Brands’ Power Maxed Stop Smoke oil additive is the perfect product to eliminate black smoke from the exhaust. It works by thickening the oil to a higher viscosity, increasing its ability to function despite worn internal components, reducing engine noise, black/blue smoke and increasing the efficiency of the vehicle. Other smoke For lighter smoke leaving the exhaust, Power Maxed Diesel Injector Cleaner is a fuel additive which can be added to approximately ¼ of a tank of fuel to help clear fuel dregs and other contaminants from the injectors to increase efficiency and reduce emissions, dark smoke and engine noise. White smoke or steam from the exhaust can be a sign of a head gasket problem. Check for loss of coolant, oil in the coolant expansion tank and for a creamy white substance around the oil filler cap which can all be indicators of a blown head gasket. Use Automotive Brands’ Steel Seal pour-in head gasket fix to permanently repair the blown head gasket. The product circulates the cooling system until the combined 18- garageTRADER

heat and pressure caused by the faulted head gasket causes a thermochemical reaction whereby the Steel Seal solidifies in layers in the damaged area, repairing it as the reaction continues. The vehicle is then allowed to cool completely (for 6-8 hours) during which time the Steel Seal sets in place in a oneway reaction, creating a permanent fix. Minor fault: High emissions The government has lowered the threshold for a minor fault based on emissions on diesel vehicles, meaning it is important to ensure the engine and exhaust system is running as cleanly as possible prior to its MOT.

The DPF The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) catches soot particulates from the combusted diesel, which it then burns away (the filter ‘regenerates’) as running temperatures get higher, usually during motorway driving or any driving over 40mph for more than 10-15 minutes. Vehicles fitted with a DPF which are only used for town driving are likely to be unable to regenerate, and can become clogged, reducing the efficiency of the vehicle, sometimes causing black smoke and even causing the turbo to go into limp home mode, at which point a drive along the motorway will not be enough to allow the filter to regenerate. Power Maxed DPF Cleaner is added to ¼ of a fuel tank, and lowers the combustion temperature of the soot in the filter for those vehicles which have become clogged, enabling the filter to regenerate at lower running temperatures. This in turn can not only reverse limp mode and enable the vehicle to run properly, but can also reduce the emissions caused by a clogged DPF. The exhaust Most Power Maxed products tackle issues right in the engine or, as above, in the DPF, thanks to the expertise in the creation of the products resulting from the input of a British Touring Car Championship race team. However,

some emissions can be caused by contaminants in various parts of the exhaust system. Here, Cataclean Diesel, which is also supplied by Automotive Brands, can be added to the fuel tank to clear away the contaminants in the system, cleaning the internal parts and ensuring your diesel is MOT-ready.

Minor fault: Leaks Much of the Power Maxed range is dedicated to stopping leaks all over the vehicle. A minor fault under the new MOT legislation constitutes a slow engine oil, power steering fluid or coolant leak, but this can turn into a major fault (and immediate fail of the MOT) if the leak is dripping during the examination. Whilst the latter is likely to require the attention of a mechanic to find and repair the source of the leak, Power Maxed products can certainly help with minor leaks, and may even save some mechanical costs on the more major ones too. Engine oil leaks Power Maxed Engine Oil Stop Leak is designed to be poured into the oil of any vehicle, to replenish dehydrated seals in the oil system, restoring them and preventing leaks. Power steering leaks Power Maxed Power Steering Stop Leak works in a similar way but is compatible with the power steering fluid to replenish seals in the system, stopping leaks and preventing future leaks too.

to seal leaks in the cooling system, preventing coolant loss. Users should be reminded that coolant loss can be a symptom of a blown head gasket, so to check for the other symptoms of a blown head gasket before using Coolant Seal, as Steel Seal may be required.

Coolant leaks Power Maxed’s Coolant Seal is a pour-in cooling system additive which uses carbon fibre particles

All products are available from most major motor factors including Bennetts, A1, GroupAuto, Euro Car Parts and more.

NISSAN QASHQAI – FRONT (02.07-)

There are 167,000 Nissan Qashqai vehicles on the road in the UK, yet only around 100 per year are having their shock absorbers replaced. This could be because replacing the shock absorbers and coil springs on the front of a Nissan Qashqai (02.07-) requires a number of components to be removed under the bonnet to gain access. The ICME recommended fitting

Steering and Suspension

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

How To Diagnose Top Strut Mount Issues

A

lthough often overlooked, top strut mounts are one of the most important parts of the suspension system, connecting the coil spring/damper strut assembly to the vehicle’s chassis. Despite their importance and the fact that on vehicles with all-round independent suspension they feature at both the front and rear, mounts are often the last thought when it comes to

diagnosing suspension noise, particularly as there are many other components that could also be the cause. Therefore, the obvious checks to suspension arms, link bars, ball joints, anti-roll bar bushes, track rod ends and the like should certainly be carried out, but if all are found to be in full working order, then the condition of the strut set-up is a natural next step for the technician to assess. Where it is easier for them to identify potential top strut mount failure is when their customers complain of clunking, knocking, grinding or creaking noises, in particular at low speeds when moving the steering lock to lock, hitting potholes, speed bumps or driving over rough ground. These are all symptoms that point to top strut mount failure and the need for their replacement. As a consequence of use, the reality is Step 6that wearing parts, such as 22- garageTRADER

deteriorate very quickly, which will have a knock-on effect to other components, such as the shock absorbers and even the tyres, as these can start to wear unevenly and may cause the vehicle’s steering to pull to one side, an effect that if left too long, can then remain even after a new top strut mount has been installed. Although it is not necessary to replace both top strut mounts together, it is however advised to change complete struts in

suspension components eventually fail. It is therefore advised that serviceable items like shock absorbers/dampers are replaced every 50,000 miles to ensure the vehicle’s suspension system remains in optimum working order. The most important point to remember however, is that if a suspension strut is replaced then the top strut mount should be replaced at the same time, as it is uneconomical to take the whole system apart at a later date just to replace it. On some vehicles however, it can be the case that the top strut mount fails prematurely at low mileage and there are several instances, particularly with a number of Fiat applications including the Fiorino/ Qubo (and their Citroën Nemo/ Peugeot Bipper/Bipper Tepee

cousins), Doblo, Grande Punto and Ducato, where this has occurred. Some of these failures are linked to poor design or specification and have forced the original equipment (OE) manufacturers to re-design and upgrade them due to water and grit ingress from the road penetrating the bearing, causing rust and corrosion and leading to seizure. Another common cause of water ingress comes as a result of jet washing under the wheel arches, where water can get into the bearings, which again can lead to failure. Freezing conditions will also be a problem if there is water penetration, as this will also cause damage to the bearings. Step 10 Failure to replace a worn

top mount will cause it to

pairs and therefore wise to replace the top strut mounts at the same time, not least because it is more economical, as it is a low-cost part in a high-labour process. The job naturally involves the struts being removed from the vehicle and the coil spring being compressed using a compressor, to then enable the safe removal of the top strut mount. Finally, as is recommended following any steering/suspension related work, if the struts/mounts have been replaced, then it is best practice to check the tracking and ensure everything is aligned correctly to prevent further problems occurring and to set the vehicle to its correct specification. Not only do remanufactured engines bring cost and environmental benefits to repairers, but they all perform to the same performance specification as their original equivalents. At Euro Car Parts Team P R Reilly, we work very closely with leading engine remanufacturing companies to bring their range to the independent aftermarket. This high standard allows us to offer an impressive 12-month unlimited mileage warranty on parts and labour. There is a clear difference between a reconditioned and remanufactured engine. A reconditioned engine has been cleaned with some damaged components replaced, Step 15 in an attempt to

restore it back to its previous condition. However, reconditioning is a subjective process and offers few guarantees to the end customer when it comes to warranty, longevity and performance.

Compared to the reconditioning process, remanufactured engines go through a more thorough process. Original units are stripped down to the core and rebuilt from the ground up, using the highest quality materials and engineering processes to return them to original performance specification levels. In most instances, performance is even improved. To demonstrate to repairers how effective remanufactured engines are, we have reduced prices across the range for a limited time.

In addition to delivering guaranteed performance at an unbeatable price, remanufactured engines also carry green credentials. TECH TIPS SKODA OCTAVIA 2.0 TDI TIMING BELT KIT INSTALLATION

The 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine used in the Octavia, features a timing belt driven water pump. As replacing the belt also requires the auxiliary drive system to be removed, Dayco recommend that all the systems’ components primary drive and auxiliary drive - be replaced at the same time.

This step-by-step technical guide will help technicians through the process, to avoid complications and ensure a first-rate job. As with all primary drive system jobs, the work should be undertaken when the engine is cold, so ideally the vehicle will not have been run for at least four hours. Remove the plastic cover to reveal the engine, followed by the mudguard moulding under the right hand wheel arch, which will allow access to the auxiliary drive system, then remove the tensioner and auxiliary belt. Remove the tie rod beneath the engine and then the crankshaft, or TVD, pulley in order to remove the lower and central timing belt covers. Then from the top of the engine move the differential pressure sensor of the FAP with its bracket and the electric fuel pump

with its bracket, followed by the fuel filter and cooling circuit tank, to be able to then remove the top timing belt cover. Remove the lower bolt of the engine mounting bracket flange, correctly support the engine and then remove the upper right engine mounting bracket, followed by the bracket flange. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to match the timing reference marks on the pulley and lock the pulley in place using Dayco tool T10050 (figure 1). Insert Dayco tool 3359 into the camshaft pulley and a second into the fuel injection pump pulley and loosen both pulleys. After loosening the bolt of the tensioner, rotate the tensioner and remove the upper idler in order to remove the timing belt and then, remove the tensioner. Remove and replace the belt tensioner stud with the new one supplied with the Dayco timing belt kit KTBWP5630, along with the lower and

WAI launches new range of MAF sensors W

AIglobal UK has launched a new range of MAF sensors under its growing engine management programme.

the six most popular MAF sensors. This includes references for BMW, General Motors, Isuzu, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. WAI’s product range, comprising engine management, rotating electrics, window regulators and wiper motors is available on a same day delivery from Marathon Warehouse Distribution and next day delivery from WAI UK. Richard Welland, WAIglobal UK managing director, said: “This is an exciting launch for the WAI brand and one that underlines the quality we have in abundance. Engine management is a growing market for our distributors and their customers and our auto-electrical expertise means we are ideally positioned to ensure they reap the benefits.”

Manufactured and patented by WAI, the 120-strong range features a thermally compensated product that utilises an OE-quality microcontroller technology, which is capable of controlling the MAF output to an OEM level of quality and precision. The sensor precision is measured against air-flow, not voltage nor frequency like lower quality sensors. The new WAI range offers a premium two-year warranty. To launch the range, WAI has produced an eye-catching flyer that promotes the range and in particular

WAI expands on window regulator range W AIglobal has announced a significant increase in its range of OE-quality window regulators for cars, adding more than 700 new references since last year. The internationally-recognised supplier’s range of window regulators offer improved gear design and strength, high torque motors and no bending or premature failures. Manufactured using advanced technology, precision lubricants and connections, all products ensure smooth and quiet operation. Each regulator is developed, designed and tested in house at one of WAIglobal’s several manufacturing locations across the globe. With just 660 last year, WAI now has 1398 window regulator 32- garageTRADER

part references, all of which can be found in its newly released catalogue. WAI has ensured that 50 percent of the new range covers the most popular makes of vehicles including: Renault; Ford; PSA Group; Volkswagen; BMW; and Fiat.

The range also includes newly released items for the 2011-16 Ford Focus, equipped with the comfort function, meaning customers can rely on WAI for access to the very latest products. Due to market demand, WAI has developed the four new Ford window regulators with emphasis

on improving the quality of the pulley and window slider, which tend to be the primary failure modes for this vehicle. All products are supported by a full technical support service that provides comprehensive advice on fitting procedures and in-service issues.

RIVERPARK Elliott was presented with this award by HRH Prince Michael who is the patron of the IMI.

Unusual Projects During the last 10 years Riverpark has had many individual projects to take on as part of our apprenticeship programmes and sometimes strange requests. The most unusual overall was the request from Aldergrove air traffic control to paint a Cessna Bobcat light aircraft. Bit of a problem getting this one into the oven so modifications had to be made. It was a pleasure to watch this aircraft a month later as she took to the sky over Newtownards.

Unsung heroes Many young people have crossed the doors of Riverpark Training in the last 10 years. Many of them simply happy with gaining their qualification and retaining their employment, there are however

40- garageTRADER

many more success stories than we could mention, of overcoming learning needs, developing skills, setting up businesses, moving to higher education and even moving abroad. We are very proud to have been the inspiration and guidance many of our students needed at the

start of their careers and also their support after their apprenticeships. Our objective now is to develop the success we have enjoyed with the “Accident Repair Sector” to the “Maintenance and Repair Sector”. We have already

established a bespoke training objective for the Agnew Group for their maintenance and repair apprenticeships and wish to extend this to other main dealer groups. Best wishes The training team at Riverpark

DRIVER’s SEAT In the Driver’s Seat, Colin Porter, Managing Director, Porters Bodyshop, Portadown.

Great leaders surround themselves with smarter people that will challenge ideas and bring new perspectives to the table. Whom do you most admire? The team I work with are all exceptional and admire all of them they are hardworking people. My dad has been very important to me as he started the business a long time ago in a small garage with limited equipment and resources to work with but managed to build a very successful name and brand. What is the most difficult aspect of your job? I try to treat any difficult aspects of my job as an opportunity to improve myself for the better, I am always looking to improve myself. It may be aiming to stay ahead of the game and keep up to date with the industry or looking at ways to ensure our team members are all well motivated What is your most effective or personal asset? My wife – if I can say this…. Gemma keeps me right and always supports me in my job especially when I am working all those extra hours in work and at home

You’ve won the lottery. What car would you rush out and buy? Lamborghini Aventador! All day long…. Tell us about your career so far? I’ve been working in the family business for 20 years. Started off on the workshop floor before moving into parts and then into estimating then I have progressed onwards and now I’m very proud to be the Managing director of our family business

Did you plan to get involved in this industry? I always had a good interest in cars and business studies at school so coming into the family business was great opportunity for me to fulfill my ambitions What was your biggest disappointment?

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

Can’t say I have had anything too disappointing really. Yet! What was the best piece of advice you ever received? `Don’t be the smartest one in the room – often leaders feel they have to be the smartest one on the room.

How do you relax? I love to spend time with my family and also try to play golf…. Tell us something surprising about yourself… I’ve spend far too much money on cars over the years but it’s been well worth it! garageTRADER - 46
