COMMENT

According to research commissioned by IMI, the majority of 11-15 year olds receive little to no careers advice whilst at school - even though over 60% of teenagers said they wanted to jump straight into work and start earning money to avoid the growing debt associated with a university degree. But only 1 in 5 said they would choose an apprenticeship after leaving school. Without good quality careers advice in schools, young people aren’t being made aware of the variety of choices available to them, which ultimately means the majority of young people choose the more popular academic route. The IMI is, therefore, urging automotive businesses to connect with local schools to provide information on future jobs and learning, outside of the more familiar university route. Most people don’t realise that there are over 150 different job roles in a retail dealership alone. This means that there are multiple career opportunities accessible through a wide variety of high quality, skilled apprenticeship programmes. And automotive businesses need to develop significant numbers of talented young people to guarantee the future of their business in what is increasingly a high-tech sector. We are lucky here in Northern Ireland to have such high quality automotive training, but the training centres need support from car dealerships to encourage more school leavers into apprenticeships in the industry. - Pat Burns, Editor

DONNELLY GROUP ACQUIRES NORTH WEST VAUXHALL FRANCHISE

N

orthern Ireland’s largest family-owned new and used vehicle retailer has acquired the Vauxhall franchise from Eakin Bros Ltd. in County Londonderry.

The Donnelly and Taggart Group is now the only Vauxhall approved franchise for new car and van sales, Used Network Q approved vehicles, Motability and Aftersales in the North West of Ireland. The new Donnelly and Taggart Vauxhall showroom, which will result in the creation of four new jobs, will be located in Campsie Industrial Estate and takes the total number of Donnelly Vauxhall sites in Northern Ireland to three. Donnelly Group Executive Chairman, Terence Donnelly, said: “With existing Vauxhall franchises in Dungannon and Omagh, the Donnelly Group has a great relationship with Vauxhall and our

significant knowledge of the brand ensures our customers benefit from the very best offers and service. “As with our other sites, Donnelly and Taggart will provide a full offering including Motability and commercial vehicles which will enhance the overall service and experience for new and existing Vauxhall customers in the North West.” The new Vauxhall showroom in Campsie Industrial Estate, is located less than seven miles from Derry/Londonderry city centre. Brent Crawford, Donnelly and Taggart Vauxhall Manager, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Vauxhall to Donnelly and Taggart in Eglinton making us the home of Vauxhall in the North West, and joining our existing 12 manufacturers. “The inclusion of commercial

vehicles such as vans in our Vauxhall offering is particularly exciting, as that was not available in the area previously. “Several of the staff from Eakin Bros have transferred to Donnelly and Taggart so for existing customers, there will be many familiar faces who bring with them a wealth of brand knowledge and experience. We would encourage Vauxhall customers in the area to call in to meet the team over a cup

of coffee and learn how we can assist with all their motoring needs and requirements.” Chris Kearney, Vauxhall Network Development Manager, said: “Vauxhall already has a strong working relationship with the Donnelly Group, and we are delighted to continue this as we expand our representation within Northern Ireland.”

LADIES ON TRACK FOR A CAREER IN THE FAST LANE

F

or anyone considering a career in motorsport engineering, students Jasmine Stuart, Charlotte Bowen and Charlotte Hosick from Millisle and Dariene Adams from Portaferry are great examples of how young women are embracing the subject and pushing boundaries. The girls are just a handful of young women across the province pursuing a career in the male dominated industry. Jasmine, Charlotte Bowen and Dariene are in the second year of the Level 3 diploma in motorsport engineering course at South Eastern Regional College (SERC), which is the equivalent to three A levels. While Charlotte Hosick is in first year. 20-year-old Jasmine said that she ‘always wanted to do something out of her comfort zone’ and ‘having been brought up around motorbikes, this was the ideal

course for me’. She said that it was also the encouragement from her parents and friends that gave her the confidence to go for what she wanted to do. After completing her GCSE’s Jasmine decided to enol to SERC, as she wanted something ‘hands-on’. Jasmine said: “I decided to study motorsports engineering because I love hands-on, practical learning - I find it much easier to remember. On completion of the course I want to progress to university to specialise in mechatronics or mechanical engineering and studying this

course will help me get there.” However, she said ‘I don’t want to leave SERC as I love it. I have ADHD and dyslexia and at school I was made to feel like a child and there was a stigma around the condition. However, at SERC we are encouraged to ask questions. At school I was told I can’t do this and I can’t do that but at SERC I am not embarrassed to ask for help. I have learnt more at SERC than I ever did at school and I wish I came here sooner. “I saw the course on the website and decided to apply for it. I then attended the open day and enrolled onto the course. On the first day of college we started learning. It was great.”

Jasmine continued, “I’m only 5ft and people think I can’t do this type of job with the heavy workload but my advice to others is just go for what you want to do. There are three females in the class and I have made friends for life, we car share and everyone in the class is like a family.” Jasmine encouraged other school leavers to follow their dreams. She says “If you are interested in engineering, give it a go. Visit the college open day, speak to the tutors and tour the workshops. It was the best decision I ever made. The facilities are amazing, and we get to work on the colleges very own Mitsubishi Evo and attend track days with Formula Ford.” 17-year-old student Charlotte Hosick said that she was ‘always interested in motorsports’ and ‘this course will set her up for a career in the industry as well as prepare her for university.’

FILTERS Filter know-how; the low-cost road to reliable servicing

T

he reliability of any finely-honed, carefully engineered device can only be as good as its weakest link. In automotive terms, service items can compromise mechanical durability and neglected filters, in particular, can cause lasting damage. The use of low quality replacement items can lead to severe damage: a failing oil filter, for example, can jeopardize oil flow and lead to expensive oil starvation. “Poor running, reduced performance or even an allergic reaction; not swapping your car’s filters with OE-quality replacements on time can have a devastating effect on the health of your vehicle, bank balance and you.” explains Federal-Mogul Motorparts Regional Marketing Manager, EMEA, Jonathan Allen, who talked us through some hints and tips provided by filters expert, Champion®. “Filters undergo the same rigorous testing as any other component, and failing to replace an ailing filter is a false economy as it can quickly lead to the failure or premature wear of other, more expensive to replace, components such as piston rings. At the very least, a badly clogged cabin filter can undermine the extensive R&D work carried out by manufacturers attempting to improve NVH levels and ambient cabin quality – on the plus side, at least you may not be able to smell the oil seeping from a leak caused by a badly worn filter.” Air, fuel, oil and cabin; these are Champion’s top tips for why a healthy filter is a crucial element of any service. Impact of a clogged air filter • Power Loss: Modern motor management systems calculate the amount of fuel to be injected on the pressure in the intake manifold. If the air filter is clogged and the incoming air is soiled this will result in distorted data and the engine power will drop. • Black Smoke: If the air flow drops because of a clogged filter, too much diesel will be injected causing an incomplete combustion, with black exhaust smoke as a

14- GARAGETRADER

result. • Engine Damage: If a filter with low efficiency is not replaced in time, it creates a snowball effect: particles enter and damage the engine, small pieces come off the engine parts and the amount of dust in the engine increases. Ultimately, this will lead to the engine’s malfunction or breakdown. • Increased Fuel Consumption: A clogged filter will generate a higher pressure difference between the clean and the dirty chambers. This can lead to particle detachments. In newer cars, this can lead to a sensor misreading. In older cars, this can have a choke effect as a consequence. Impact of a clogged fuel filter • Power Loss: If the amount of delivered fuel to the engine is lower than the requested fuel by the engine, the mixture will be lean and there will be power loss. Also, a too lean mixture can lead to a misfire and the engine attempting to troubleshoot, which could go on to damage the catalyst converter. • Bad Starting Properties: When the fuel filter is clogged the time to get the ideal pressure in the fuel line will take longer and the engine will have starting problems or will not start at all. • Damage to other components: Modern common rail injection systems are made with a high accuracy. Dirt can damage parts that are expensive to replace, caused by a fuel filter not replaced in time or one that is installed with a low efficiency. Impact of a clogged oil filter • Engine wear: A clogged oil filter will allow unfiltered oil going to the lubricated parts. This will cause excessive engine wear. • Leaking Oil Filter & other damages: The oil and oil filter must always be replaced together at

specific moments recommended by the manufacturer. If the oil is never changed, too old, or only topped up, there’s a chance it turns into black sludge. An engine flush is a possible solution and a full rebuild is recommended.

Impact of a clogged cabin filter • Health: Cabin filters are installed to have a better air environment inside the car and to capture particles, pollen, bacteria or even larger exhaust gas particles exhaust gasses and moisture for carbon activated cabin filters. If not replaced in time allergic reactions like sneezing, watery eyes and coughing can reduce the driver’s concentration. • Safety: A clogged cabin filter has its effect on the ventilation circuit. The cabin blower experiences more resistance, has to work harder and its life-time will be significantly shorter. A reduced performance of the air-conditioning or heater can also be dangerous for the driver. For instance, defogging of the windows can take longer. • Economy: When the cabin filter is clear from dust and dirt, it helps to maximize the air flow in the A/C heating system. The result: better performance, reduced fuel consumption, an extended life-time of the car’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (plus no odd smell in the car).

HiFi Filters now available from GW Strong

T

he Swiss manufactured range of HiFi filters is now available from GW Strong Agencies on Donegall Avenue in Belfast. The range includes filters for cars, trucks, tractors, forklifts, construction equipment, lawn mowers, marine applications, compressors and industrial applications. The range of HiFi Filters includes engine air filters, fuel filters, oil filters and breather filters as well as pollen filters, hydraulic filters, gearbox, airbrake and air/oil separator filters. The HiFi brand name may not be so well known here, but it is well established in Europe, with a manufacturing plant and logistics headquarters in France. The original founding company was set up in Switzerland in 1977 and the HiFi brand name was established in 1996. The HiFi Filter Group now offers one of the widest ranges of filters in Europe. G.W. Strong Agencies is a leading Belfast based distributor to the wholesale motor factor trade throughout the UK and Northern Ireland. The company was founded in 1956 and were the first to establish an all-Ireland parts and accessories operation. GW Strongs have gathered fifty years’ experience and a broad industry knowledge which allows them to support the evolving needs of their client base and remain at the forefront of automotive technologies.

Filters may be seemingly minor components, but consumers often choose to save money and opt for lower quality products. However, educated consumers that understand how a non OE-quality part could jeopardize vehicle reliability are likely to spend that little extra and technicians have the added confidence of the work carried out. Preventative maintenance is key to avoiding big repair costs and the need to undertake complicated jobs, but with a little care it’s easy to filter out the big bills. CLUTCHES

Brake and Clutch Re-lining now available from CU-VE-SO

C

uveso – Custom Vehicle Solutions based in Lisburn have now added brake and clutch re-lining to their range of automotive and transport services and solutions. Cuveso recently took over two of Northern Ireland’s longest established re-lining specialists, Clarke Bros and Belfast Brake Specialists (BBS). All the specialist engineering equipment for re-lining brakes and clutches as well as remanufacturing clutch pressure plates and flywheels from both sites have now been moved to Cuveso headquarters situated near the MOT Centre in Lisburn. Most classic brake linings are bonded on to the shoe whilst the newer versions are riveted we can cater for both. All parts are stripped, blasted and prepped before the new lining is bonded on. In most cases this can be done while you wait but some cases this service can take up to 24 hours to complete but means that just about any type of brake or clutch can be renewed without having to purchase a brand new unit. This new service from Cuveso 16- GARAGETRADER

Gerry Rogan and John Curistan of CuVeSo. offers tremendous potential for the vintage and classic car, lorry, forklift and tractor markets and much more. Cuveso recently renewed the linings on an Otis lift shaft for the Royal Victoria Hospital as well as replacing winch brake linings on a fishing trawler. Another project involved renewing the centrifugal clutch on a refrigerated transport unit, while the friction plates on automatic gates were also re-lined. The company can also remanufacture, repair and modify flywheels and pressure plates using their special grinder which is more than large enough to take any commercial clutch which is a service very few engineering shops in Ireland can offer. These are the latest developments

for the company headed up by John Curistan. Cuveso is already a wellestablished agent for Speedliner which is a specialist covering for the likes of pick-up beds, van floors etc which can also be offered in an anti-bacterial coat for carrying food or dog warden vans etc. Of the shelf twenty five different colours are available in the Speedliner range but any colour can be specially ordered. Custom Vehicle Solutions are the sole supplier and official partner for Tevo Van racking across N.Ireland. With Tevo we can convert your empty van into a fully functioning service vehicle with our totally modular racking systems and van shelving. We fit racking solutions into a wide range of vans and commercial vehicles including

LCVs, MCV,s and Pick-up Trucks. Custom Vehicle Solutions has the ability to either increase payload capacity or lower fuel consumption and no matter which business sector you operate within, or what you drive, we have a van racking system to suit your business, whether for a single van or a fleet of vehicles. Cuveso are also agents for Winton On-board Power. Winton Engineering specialise in developing and manufacturing systems that utilise the power of a vehicle’s engine to drive auxiliary equipment, delivering compressed air, 110V and 240V power as well as high pressure water for the fire service. Schaeffler SCHAEFFLER (UK) AND LIQUI MOLY COMBINE TO DEVELOP AN ADDITIVE THAT HELPS REDUCE TIMING CHAIN WEAR BY UP TO 20%

Schaeffler (UK) has forged an exclusive partnership with oil and additive supplier, Liqui Moly, by offering an additive with every INA Timing Chain KIT. Tips for replacement

INA Timing Chain KITs include all of the OE components required for a professional system replacement: timing chains, chain sprockets, hydraulic and mechanical chain tensioners, as well as tensioning and guide rails, the appropriate gaskets and all mounting parts.

During the installation of an INA timing chain KIT, a technician should apply ‘Chain Protect’ to the timing chain and associated components to help create a robust layer on all ‘point of contact’ surfaces, resulting in smoother chain function and reduced friction. The crucial element of any timing chain replacement is the ‘breaking18- GARAGETRADER

CLUTCHES EURO CAR PARTS TEAM P R REILLY ANNOUNCES FREE LIFETIME CLUTCH WARRANTIES

T

rade customers who purchase a clutch product from Euro Car Parts before 30th April 2018 will benefit from a free lifetime warranty. The offer covers every clutch product supplied by the company, including such brands as LUK, SACHS, Transmech, Valeo and more. Those taking advantage of the promotion will be able to pass the warranty onto their customers, offering another sales differentiator and giving independents an

additional competitive edge against franchise and main dealer workshops. The limited time offer has been introduced as part of Euro Car Parts Team P R Reilly’s ongoing commitment to supporting the independent trade throughout Ireland. Euro Car Parts was the first supplier to offer lifetime warranties to the independent trade back in 2016, covering a wide range of mechanical parts. The programme, which continues to be active,

enables repairers to purchase cover for individual parts only, or extend the warranty to include labour for major product ranges such as rotating electrics, steering racks, turbochargers and EGR valves. Bill Stimson, marketing director at Euro Car Parts commented: “Our free clutch lifetime warranty promotion is something that no other supplier has offered to repairers and adds further reassurance and value. “The free lifetime warranty

provides no fuss cover, allowing repairers to claim a full replacement of any clutch product bought from Euro Car Parts Team P R Reilly, on behalf of customers.” The financial warranty will be solely provided and administered by Euro Car Parts Irl and the promotion must end on 30th April 2018. Any clutch products purchased after this date will not qualify for a free lifetime warranty. To view the entire clutch range available from Euro Car Parts, visit: https://omnipart.eurocarparts.com/

of driven plates, and the new automated test rigs to check the full functioning characteristics of clutch cover assemblies. The equipment is also used to provide solutions for manufacturers or companies where the original clutch is no longer available or a solution is required for a unique vehicle problem, emphasising Borg & Beck’s technical excellence. The previous apparatus had to be used manually, requiring engineers to operate with Windows NT, which could only create relatively simple graphs. Now, with the latest technology, these new additions can carry out lengthy cycle tests and produce a detailed graph for every

cycle to monitor consistency and wear patterns. In addition, the digital sensors/transducers on the machines produce highly accurate specification data and characteristics, giving the engineers the benefit of a quicker process with more information, which allows them to check clutches with greater precision than previously. With a larger capacity to store information, they also provide more accessibility, as both feed through a central database to give engineers the specific details of every clutch in the Borg & Beck range, with each team member having access at their workstation.

BORG & BECK TECH CENTRE UPGRADE REINFORCES CLUTCH EXPERTISE

MD Friction, has put the quality and performance of its Textar brake disc coating to the test; comparing thickness, uniformity and corrosion against three competitor products as part of its benchmarking series. TMD Friction defined 20 measuring points, including four at the contact surface of the disc top hat, and four on the visible outer surface of the disc to evaluate coating thickness and uniformity. The results showed that Textar had the thinnest coating in all measuring areas, with only a slight variation in data, indicating high uniformity. Textar had the most even coating while proving equally resistant to corrosion when compared to its thicker-coated competitors. The test also highlighted that coated discs have equivalent break-in properties to uncoated discs. Results revealed that thinner coating does not lead to higher corrosion, and despite having the thinnest coating among the tested products, Textar had similar results 24- GARAGETRADER

K

to its competitors. To determine corrosion resistance, the brake discs were sprayed with five percent saline solution in a salt spray cupboard for 96 hours. Both coating thickness and uniformity make a real difference to brake reliability. If the coating is too thick and uneven on the contact surface of the brake disc top hat, it can have a huge impact on runout. Too much runout causes brake growl and leads to steering wheel movement and/or vibrations in the brake pedal. The thinner coating not only ensures efficient use of materials, but also brings about improved braking reliability. Vincenzo Di Caro, development engineer at TMD Friction, said: “Coated brake discs can be used as and when you need them, without preparation. To protect from corrosion, uncoated discs are stored in oil, which must be removed from the disc before assembly. “Coated discs don’t require oil removal, reducing workload and making the process more environmentally friendly through

reducing oil waste. We recommend garages always clean the existing hub and remove corrosion before assembly so that the new brake disc can reach optimum performance.” TMD Friction regularly carries out tests within its benchmark series to

secure and develop the high quality and performance of its products. TMD Friction always chooses a balanced mix of competitors, including well-known OE and aftermarket manufacturers.

Textar is first to market with brake pads for Audi, BMW, Opel and Ford

JURATEK JURATEK – TWENTY YEARS IN THE BRAKING INDUSTRY

J

uratek have been supplying the automotive industry for over 20 years with the highest quality brake discs and pads. The design and production of our brake discs and drums is controlled by our own engineers and every batch received is fully checked on our precision measuring machine. All pads and shoes are approved to ECE R90 regulations. But we take our quality testing much further, by using the OE industry designed tests SAE2521 & SAE2522 Juratek employs a team of professional engineers who have developed the products to today’s industry leading standards. Using the latest Computer aided design software 3D models are produced based on measurements taken from our coordinate measuring machine (CMM). These models are then converted into 2D manufacturing drawings. These models are also used in the routine inspection of the products once manufactured, to ensure conformity to the original design. Coated Brake Discs Anti-Corrosion paint is applied to the non-braking surface of all brake discs across the range. As many modern cars are fitted with alloy wheels, a rusty brake disc can be quite unsightly.

However the coated brake discs, which can be seen through the alloy wheels remains a pleasant silver colour. The silver coating is also applied to the edge of the brake discs and inside the vent gap. This means that corrosion will not weaken the internal structure of the brake disc.

Premium Brake Pads

OEM brake industry to measure and develop brake pads for OE use and assesses their performance at the more extreme values of braking performance not covered by the ECE R90 test regime.

All Juratek brake pads are ECE R90 approved for fitting in any European country. The aim of ECE R90 is to establish a common minimum standard of braking performance, product integrity and manufactured quality for replacement brake linings across the whole of Europe. Previously,

SAE2521 (AK Noise)

The effectiveness of our premium anti–noise brake shims is assured by tests we carry out to SAE2521 – the test developed by the OEM automotive industry to measure the noise performance of a vehicle braking system.

the market was unregulated and products of dubious performance and quality could be sold with impunity with consequent safety risks to all road users. Juratek however go beyond the basic requirements of ECE R90 by testing our products to the SAE2521 and SAE2522 industry tests.

SAE2522 (AK Master)

This test programme used by the 26- GARAGETRADER

The test is carried out on a test rig comprising a full vehicle corner and is contained in an anechoic (sound-proof) chamber to prevent external noise pollution. Initial Performance Strip The Initial Performance Strip is added to all front application brake pads. This strip improves the performance of the brakes during the initial running-in period. The addition of the Green Stripe to the pad surface gives more friction, hence better braking, from the very first stop, in comparison with the same grade of pad material without the Green Stripe.

Juratek is recognised as one of Europe’s leading distributors of brake discs and brake pads for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The range includes cars of all sizes including prestige and SUV models. All Juratek brake pads are ECE R90 approved for fitting in any European country. This standard was established to control the performance, manufacture, distribution, sale and installation of replacement brake pads. The Juratek car pad programme utilises two different material types depending upon the application; one grade is used for standard models in a vehicle range and a second grade with a higher level of friction and a longer pad life is used for heavier duty applications such as prestige, sports models, SUV and light commercial models. Both types incorporate the special “Green Stripe on front axle pads to ensure good pedal feel on initial fitment of new pads and promote faster bedding, together with premium OEM shims (rubber/steel/rubber) to ensure freedom from squeal.

As a result of these enhancements, tests proved Juratek pads to be one of the quietest available.

Alloy Wheel Repair NI Expand Their Opportunities with Vixen’s Ultimate Wheel Repair Package!

A

lloy Wheel Repair Northern Ireland have recently purchased the Vixen Aqua Wheelblaster and the Vixen WHL30 Wheel Lathe. Alloy Wheel Repair NI specialise in the repair and refurbish of alloy wheels which now, thanks to their Vixen machines, can be processed more quickly and efficiently! Prior to purchasing the Aqua

Wheelblaster, the alloy wheels were processed by hand, taking up to an hour to complete per wheel. The investment has had a positive impact on their company as they

GARAGETRADER 28- GARAGETRADER

can now process 4 wheels in under an hour, saving time and money. Alloy Wheel Repair Northern Ireland contacted Vixen Surface Treatments after noticing an advert in the Garage Trader Magazine. They were then contacted by Terry, one of Vixens highly trained sales engineers. Terry visited Alloy Wheel Repair in Northern Ireland to help gain a further understanding

of what they wanted to achieve and which process would be best for them. Alloy Wheel Repair NI then visited the Vixen demonstration centre based in the North East of England to trial the Aqua Wheelblaster machine and the Wheel Lathe. After spending the day using both of the machines and witnessing the results for themselves they decided to place an order.

Vixen has over 25 years’ experience in shipping machines internationally, with over 30 verified representatives and distributers worldwide. Once the machines were delivered one of Vixens engineers spent time teaching and supporting the operators so they could use the machines with confidence. After having their machines for a while Terry visited again by which time the operators were very comfortable with the Lathe and machinery they had purchased. Rob the manager from Alloy Wheel Repair NI said: “Vixen’s package was financially competitive and they provided excellent support throughout the whole process, but what we loved about Vixen is dealing with one sales engineer from start to finish. Vixen are very reliable and follow through with everything agreed from beginning to end.”

THE BIG WIN for Vixen’s Aqua Wheelblaster machine is, with diamond wheels, often the damage is restricted to the alloy wheel machine faces. If this is the case, the Aqua Wheelblaster will lightly etch the lacquered surface of the wheel without damaging the original paint, therefore saving more time as no paint match will be required. The wheel can then be machined in the Lathe, followed by a clear coat of self etching lacquer. “This has improved speed,

efficiency and a higher standard of wheel repair results.” The Vixen Wheel Lathe has auto probe software included and a machining wheel diameter of up to 30 inches. This probe maps the original wheel profile, so that the operator can set the amount of machining required, giving the alloy faces a brand new look again. “The Lathe provides top spec diamond cut wheels with a professional finish.” Rob then went on to say: “This being our 10th year anniversary of Alloy Wheel Repair NI meant it was time to upgrade our machinery and processes. With the help from Terry and everyone at Vixen, we were able to achieve our goal which has moved our business forward so that we can provide an even better service to our customers.” Vixen Surface Treatments Ltd manufacture the Aqua Wheelblaster as well as other models within the Aquablast range, including the Aquablast 915, 1215, 1515 and the Aquablast Cube. The standard cabinets (915, 1215 & 1515) are Vixens most popular machines for the automotive industry alongside the Aqua Wheelblaster machine. The standard cabinets each possess the same advanced wetblasting technology to create pristine results on a variety of components such as engines, turbo chargers and castings. These cabinets are the perfect addition to any Automotive reconditioner, Bodyshop or Automotive garage. As well as the benefits provided by the standard machines Vixen takes it one step further by offering bespoke machinery designed by their in house CAD team If you are interested in Vixens complete wheel repair package or in the wetblasting process then contact them today on 01642 769333 or visit their website www. vixen.co.uk for further information

WORKSHOP

Spray booth safety tips from 3M M

any spray booth operators work in hazardous environments every day, perhaps without even realising it. So it is crucial to ensure that hazards are properly explained to them and meticulously controlled in carefully maintained spraying facilities. Key hazards One of the biggest risks to a spray painter’s health is isocyanate exposure. It’s one of the main causes of occupational asthma in the UK and can be found in 2-pack polyurethane paints, used extensively in bodyshops. When spraying with paints containing this chemical, it is vital that only supplied air respiratory protective systems are used to safeguard those within the booth. These systems pass air from a compressor, through the necessary filters and regulate it to the correct volume, before distributing it through to the visor for safe inhalation. It’s a common misconception that a battery supplied filter will work as well in this situation, but this type of personal protective equipment (PPE) only filters the air present in the room, rather than supplying it fresh. In certain circumstances, a supplied air half mask can be used with goggles. The mask should always be skin-tight and properly fitted to the face. Otherwise, wearing it becomes redundant. Operators should always wear suitable eye protection, such as goggles or a face shield, and disposable gloves when working with aerosols. They should also ensure that the breakthrough time and permeation rate of the gloves are suitable for the type and length of the work in hand. This can be

30- GARAGETRADER

checked with the supplier at the time of purchase. Other hazards present in spray booths include noise pollution (dealt with by hearing protection), adhesives, sealant gases and dust particles. In order to protect against hazardous substances, protective coveralls should always be tested to at least Type 5 or 6 and disposed of after use so as not to harbour chemicals. Reusable cotton coveralls do not give adequate protection in these circumstances. Raising awareness Despite responsibility predominantly lying with managers, legislation states employees must take care of their own safety and those around them – checking they fully understand their PPE and the need to report any defects straightaway. All users must receive detailed training before working in this type of high-risk environment and should always test equipment before commencing a task. For example, it is difficult to spot from smell alone when someone is being exposed to isocyanates, as by the time you smell or taste the atomised vapours, you are exposed. Another key training topic is aftercare. Users should wash any product off the skin as soon as possible, without using solvents. Operators should also be encouraged to wash exposed skin at break times and after finishing work.

Testing Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) testing should be carried out by a

competent individual and include, among other things, spray booth ovens, dust extraction systems and paint mixing rooms. Mist clearance tests are also essential for checking air quality. Test smoke is used to replicate the particles in a booth that are invisible to the naked eye to determine clearance time – the period that must elapse before someone can safely

enter or exit the booth. In addition, extract filter changes and breathing air quality tests should be carried out regularly to check the air coming through the ventilator for factors that can affect air quality. If a test fails, it’s usually due to a compressor fail or an unsatisfactory filter. In all instances, records must be kept for a minimum of five years, as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) can request proof of testing at any time. For more information, visit www.3M.co.uk/safety, or call the 3M personal safety helpline on 0870 6080 060 in the UK or 1 800 320 500 if based in Ireland.

“It is difficult to overstate the importance of following the correct procedure when installing, not just timing belts, but also auxiliary belts”, said Dayco’s Country Manager, Steve Carolan, “so the training we provide centres around the reasons why the fitting process should be fully adhered to.

“Naturally, our one-to-one and seminar training modules include interactivity and the opportunity for technicians to ask questions, because honest and open, two-way communication is the best way to ensure the message really hits home. BATTERIES THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF VEHICLE BREAKDOWN ACROSS EUROPE REMAINS BATTERYRELATED

P

roviding ‘traditional’ SLI (starter/lights/ignition) batteries are maintained properly – charged regularly and kept from excessive discharge – they are a remarkably reliable source of power until they need to be replaced at the end of their natural service life. As replacing them is a simple job for the technician, they generally offer no great profit potential for the workshop. However, as vehicle development continues, aligned with increasing political pressure for more environmentally friendly cars,

vehicle manufacturers (VMs) have turned from SLI to a more appropriate battery solution that meets the demands of the changing market. So, although SLI batteries will still be the highest percentage of batteries sold in the replacement market for a time, the inexorable rise in new battery technology will eventually take its place. To address the developmental and environmental issues such as carbon emissions and the effect they have on greenhouse gasses, the most common solution was the introduction of stop/start engine technology, which in turn has driven the development of AGM (absorbent glass mat) and latterly

36- GARAGETRADER

EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) car batteries. First developed in the 1980s for use within the military, the charge and discharge characteristics of AGM batteries are essential for stop/start vehicles. Battery replacement in vehicles with these engines is a far more profitable exercise, because the process involves the use of specialist battery testing equipment and the need of a battery validation tool to reset charge algorithms to factory settings and is generally significantly more labour intensive. It might sound obvious, but it is worth restating that when replacing batteries, technicians must use a battery of the correct specification, whether AGM/EFB or indeed, SLI. Failure to do so will cause avoidable problems, particularly for

stop/start enabled vehicles, which require an AGM/EFB replacement. As previously mentioned, the drivers of this change are the VMs, who now use this new battery technology. In 2004, 5% of new cars were fitted with AGM battery technology, in 2014 AGM/EFB batteries totalled 70%. By 2020 it is accurately predicted this number will be 92%, which means the replacement market in the UK alone will be between 800,000 to 1 million batteries, some 20% of the total UK replacement market and will only rise further. P Topping in Enniskillen have reported brisk sales in Yuasa batteries and have been taking part in Yuasa’s Always Check The Battery scheme. The team at TP Topping are reporting positive feedback from customers, preventing countless vehicle non-start situations and have seen increases in battery sales. Launched in September 2017, Yuasa’s scheme encourages garages to significantly improve customer service, drive customer loyalty and increase their revenue by testing the battery of every vehicle serviced or repaired. It was launched following a major workshop trial which discovered that 11 % of all vehicles required a battery replacement and 27% needed recharging. Diagnosing a battery issue in the workshop prevents a distressing non-start situation occurring in the near future.

Yuasa, the world’s leading battery manufacturer, has announced the introduction of several new automotive batteries and specification improvements. Yuasa’s premium YBX5000 series, which offer up to 35% more cranking power and 50,000 starts, will see 6 new references introduced, including the YBX5115 and YBX5069. The YBX5115 is a L4 type battery and its introduction means the YBX range now has the full complement of European sizes. The YBX5069 offers a performance upgrade option which caters for high powered diesels. Yuasa’s standard YBX1000 range has also been upgraded. All DIN European type batteries within the range are now fully maintenance free with a sealed rollover proof double lid and state of charge indicator. Plus, enhanced safety features such as an integrated dual flame arrestor for safer venting.

NITROHEAT

NITROHEAT LAUNCHES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND IRELAND

S

ince spray painting with heated Nitrogen was first introduced almost 10 years ago into the Accident Repair Industry, the technology has developed dramatically and Radical Equipment Ltd are pleased to bring this innovative system to the UK and Ireland. If you are looking for a product that will reduce your monthly paint costs, buffing, polishing and paint flash time by up to 20%, then you need NitroHeat. “Being granted the distribution rights for the United Kingdom and Ireland is exciting news and we are eager to make NitroHeat a household name in the accident repair industry. Some may feel that it is an expensive investment, but the potential return on investment results in money going back into the pockets of the bodyshop by up to 30% and increased profits of up to 20% on paint materials. It is hard to believe that business owners in this industry would not want to increase productivity, improve cycle times and maintain a high-quality paint finish. Installation is simple and the financial benefits are incredible. In an industry dominated by the cost of having to use genuine OEM parts, there is at least some respite in that, by investing in a NitroHeat dual booth Combination system

38- GARAGETRADER

which can facilitate two spray booths and two spray technicians simultaneously with the correct operator training programme we have in place, can only benefit the bodyshop of today for the bodyshop of tomorrow. The NitroHeat Generator, Temperature Controller and Heated Hose has been designed, developed and produced in Oregon, USA, since 2011. The companies founder, with over 30 years experience in the automotive engineering and collison industry, realised a need for more efficient propellant for spray painting, resulting in the development of the NitroHeat system. NitroHeat are constantly striving to meet the demands of future industry trends, allowing them to innovate products that meet the market requirements. Painting with heated Nitrogen gas improves your transfer efficiency, reduces bake and flash times and allows your painter to achieve a better quality of finish on the part or panel. Using Nitrogen is better than compressed air because it contains no moisture and the molecules remain uniform in size on application. It is inert in nature meaning that the molecules do not expand or contract like compressed air does, therefore providing a more solid layer of paint.

The NitroHeat NITROMAX 30 Generator is a Dual booth / Dual painter system, that can also be used with multiple booths and painters with the addition of a receiver tank and pressure booster if necessary. The NITROMAX Generators are high performance filtration units that clean and separate the gases in compressed air, to harness the available nitrogen to be used in the application of paint. Conventional compressed air acts as a propellant that carries multiple molecules and impurities travelling at different speeds, resulting in collisions, overspray and uneven distribution of paint particles. The paint process is further optimised by the addition of heat by way of the HeatPro 200. The HeatPro 200 is essentially a compressed air heater, used to precisely control the delivery temperature. Keeping your temperature precise and constant is very important, because changes in atmospheric temperature changes the viscosity of the paint you are applying. Throughout the day, spray painters are constantly changing and adjusting the pressure they are spraying at, due to changes in air temperature. By using heated nitrogen, there is no need to adjust pressure settings, no matter the air temperature. The HeatPro 200 is ideal for spray painting both water borne and solvent based materials. The built-in set value and present value temperature controller allows maximum

user control. Temperatures are adjustable for the application of different liquid materials. Ideal temperatures can be achieved for sealer, primer, base and clear coats. What NitroHeat can do for your Bodyshop: • Improves Transfer Efficiency:A higher volume of paint is transferred to the part being painted, You get better coverage of paint, and only have to apply 2 – 3 coats, rather than 4 – 5, which greatly reduces your paint consumption by up to 10%. • Reduces Overspray:-The Nitrogen molecules extracted by the Nitromax propellant travel at identical speeds resulting in less material being wasted into the atmosphere. Less material waste, results in extended filter life up to 40%, and less contamination in the paint, further reducing your buffing and polish times. • Cycle Time:- The average wait between paint coat application is 15 minutes. Using heated Nitrogen, the flash time is greatly decreased, allowing your painter to spray virtually every coat of paint back to back. Paint shop productivity and cycle times can be increased by up to 20%. NITROHEAT – A SMARTER WAY TO PAINT…. For a limited time only, we are offering a special introductory price on a NitroHeat Dual Booth Combination System.
