PR REILLY RAC AND EURO CAR PARTS JOIN FORCES TO CREATE THE BIGGEST INDEPENDENT GARAGE NETWORK IN THE UK
T
he RAC has joined forces with Euro Car Parts in a partnership set to create the biggest independent garage network in the country. Formed from existing RAC Approved Garages and Autofirst Network members, along with new sign ups, the newly created ‘RAC Approved Garages powered by Autofirst Network’ already has 500 garages on board and is expected to exceed 650 by April this year. As part of the network, each garage will be jointly branded, carrying the prominent RAC and Autofirst Network branding. The partnership, which aims to ensure customers are only ever a few miles from an RAC Approved Garage, will offer consumers all the benefits of a local garage, combined with all the trust and confidence associated with the RAC brand. By subscribing, garages will also be offered repair work via the RAC Warranty scheme, as well as
repairs referred to them by RAC patrols from breakdowns through the company’s Accredited Repairer scheme. Garages can also benefit from access to a suite of Euro Car Parts products including its garage management system, technical training, technical hotline, technician recruitment and support from a dedicated account manager. They will be further supported by a listing on the WhoCanFixMyCar. com website, opening even more opportunities for repair work through its national database. To join, garages will need to offer servicing and repairs and employ qualified professional technicians. They must also be prepared to adhere to the RAC Customer Charter and Code of Conduct approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) and agree to a yearly inspection to ensure they meet the agreed standards.
RAC chief RAC Chief Executive Dave Hobday and ECP executive Dave Chief Executive Andy Hamilton Hobday said: “The RAC name is synonymous with complete peace of mind for motorists which explains why we have seen so many garages benefit from becoming part of the RAC Approved Garage Powered by already had an extremely strong Autofirst Network. We know from relationship with the RAC from market research that customers years of supplying its patrols with really value the friendly, local parts, so it was a natural next step and reliable service provided by to work together in the independent independent garages and have a garage network space. very high level of trust in the RAC “We believe the brands are an so this is the perfect recipe for excellent fit and have the potential garages looking to stand out from to become a first choice for the crowd in a busy marketplace.” consumers wanting the trust of big Andy Hamilton, Euro Car Parts brands but with local service and chief executive, added: “We convenience.”
EURO CAR PARTS TEAM P R REILLY ADDS CARBON CLEAN TO GROWING DIESEL RANGE
W
orkshops can now access a complete range of diesel particulate filter (DPF) specialist cleaning equipment through Euro Car Parts Team P R Reilly. Thanks to an agreement with leading manufacturer Carbon Clean, Euro
Car Parts Team P R Reilly is now providing effective cleaning solutions for any type of engine, through its Workshop Solutions brand.
Already experiencing high demand, the Carbon Clean DCS-16 DPF
cleaning system is designed to enable workshops to carry out DPF cleaning themselves, without sending the filter away for specialist maintenance. It allows garages to remove the DPF, perform an internal wash using a detergent-based cleaning agent and flush out harmful ash left over from passive regeneration. The system differs from injection fuel cleaning systems because it cleans and drains both soot and ash from the entire DPF system, bringing units back to their original performance specification. And while the Carbon Clean range offers the opportunity to instantly clean DPFs in the workshop, Euro Car Parts Team P R Reilly is keen to stress that the DPF filter itself is not always at fault, because it may have been blocked due to other components failing within the engine system.
6- GARAGETRADER
Helen Robinson, marketing director at Euro Car Parts, commented: “With all diesel vehicles manufactured after 2009 being required by law to have a DPF fitted, the independent aftermarket is increasingly faced with vehicles that either have a blocked filter, or an illuminated DPF warning light. While the traditional solution has been to send DPFs away for specialist cleaning, adding to customer waiting times, the Carbon Clean range lets repairers perform complete cleans from the workshop, passing on added value to customers.” Recent changes to how NCT checks are carried out also call for a visual inspection to ensure filters are functioning correctly and if any trace of smoke is emitted from an exhaust during a metered check, the vehicle will fail under a ‘major’ defect.

CONTINENTAL FG7 ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE INTRODUCTION OF CONTINENTAL PTG TO THEIR PORTFOLIO
T
he automotive sector is undergoing numerous changes. Repair requirements in the workshops are also becoming ever more complex as a result – while the pressure on time and costs continues to rise. To ensure its customers reliably meet these challenges when carrying out repairs to the power transmission system, FG7 has now added products from the Continental Power Transmission Group to its range.
In the past few years, Continental has undergone a complete strategic transformation – from a belt supplier to a full-line distributor for belt and timing drives. In the past, Continental “only” supplied power transmission belts; today, it offers all-in-one solutions and services for all aspects of belt drives and timing gear. These include, for example, diagnostic and fitting tools for the belt drive, extensive service offers for component cross-referencing
and fitting, and its successful kits. Because mechanics will find all the parts they need for the repair in them, they can work more easily, quickly and reliably. Continental recently added a large number of new products to its portfolio in line with this comprehensive strategy. For instance, a regulatable water pump that is available in timing belt kit CT1168WP1. Such products are ideal for modern engines in which individual components perform thermal management functions – thereby ensuring greater efficiency and lower emissions.
Another new product is the multi V-belt kit plus water pump, as the importance of thermal management is also growing in the complex auxiliary drive. And because repairs are also more time-consuming as a result, mechanics should also always fit a new water pump there when changing the belt. That’s why
Continental has adopted the all-inone approach, which has proved so successful when changing timing belts, for multi V-belts, too. Furthermore, FG7’s customers can also look forward to being able to order a significantly larger range of Continental pumps as standalone items. The new timing belt PROKIT plus water pump is new to the range, too. In addition to the two timing belts that are required for
some engines, this also includes the water pump. Innovativeness and reliability are typical Continental features, but it also offers yet more peace of mind. Because the company grants all registered workshops a five-year guarantee on all products from the Power Transmission Group for the automotive aftermarket. www.contitech.de/aam
Change it like a Pro Timing Belt Kit + Water Pump Experts know: in engines in which the timing belt also drives the water pump, the pump, too, should be replaced when the timing belt is changed. The Timing Belt Kit + Water Pump makes this job easier. It contains all the parts needed for the replacement – belt, water pump, pulleys and whatever consumables are required by the relevant vehicle type. www.contitech.de/aam

FG7 MOVES UP ANOTHER GEAR D evelopments, expansion, new suppliers and members sees the wholesale buying group FG7 moving up another gear.
Coming off the back of a successful 2018 for the group and January 2019 starting the year off strongly, Kevin O’Kane and his team at FG7 see the development of the company continuing to grow throughout this year, with plans in place for further expansion of product lines and motor factor members. “So far this year we have met with our leading suppliers, not only to improve our stock profiles on the ground but also to encourage a closer relationship with them and in turn offer a better support network for our group members,”
Kevin O’Kane of FG7
says Kevin. “In the last few months of 2018 we began to plan for the growth in 2019 by employing extra drivers, procurement and business development staff all in preparation for adding to the group and refining the stocks available on our 4.5 acre headquarters site.” FG7 has just launched three new suppliers, Contitech, Stabilus and Dunlop Air Suspension. Contitech is well known for its timing belts and is part of the Continental Group, Stabilus manufacture gas struts and dampers while Dunlop Air Suspension provide air suspension for a range of motor vehicles. FG7 never stands still, so expect to hear more news from Kevin and the team in the next few editions of Garage Trader…

Dunlop’s advanced air bellows are crafted to benefit applications where conventional pneumatic actuators are either not powerful enough, too bulky or are in demanding environmental conditions for maintenance. They have been designing, developing and manufacturing air springs since the 1950s and were

among the earliest producers. To date they have manufactured more than 10 million air springs. The primary aim of the air spring is to provide for a consistently low natural frequency of the vehicle body, irrespective of load, thereby providing excellent ride comfort. The use of air springs combined with automatic vehicle levelling
ensures that the vehicle body is both suspended flexibly and kept at a constant ride height whatever the payload. This maximizes passenger comfort and suspension travel at all times. The full range of Dunlop Air Suspension systems is now available through FG7 motor factors. GARAGETRADER - 9

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR WINTER? W ho does not know that? With falling temperatures everything becomes a bit slower and more comfortable. Unfortunately the tailgate of the vehicle does as well. When packing, it opens much more sluggish compared to warm days. Why is that? The cause of this phenomenon is easily explained: in the cold, the gas in the gas spring contracts, the pressure inside is lower, and when opening the tailgate, the gas spring pushes out with a correspondingly lower force. Because even the best gas spring loses its original function over the years due to escaping gas, one day it needs to be exchanged. This is more noticeable when temperatures drop.
When designing Stabilus products, these natural conditions are taken into account. Stabilus gas springs can perform their function over a temperature range of -30 ° C to 80 ° C, although the speed of movement can vary slightly. The best preparation for the winter is thus a timely replacement of the gas spring. So it’s best to contact a regional Stabilus distributor right away. So nothing stands in the way of a relaxed winter without an annoying tailgate. OE quality meets many years of experience - for spare parts you can rely on.

DAYCO
DAYCO WATER PUMP & TIMING BELT KITS
A
s they pursue the engine emission and fuel consumption reductions that have been imposed by worldwide legislation, there is a trend among the vehicle manufacturers to integrate more of their engine systems. As a result, there are an increasing number of vehicles with engines that now incorporate the water pump into the primary drive system, rather than as part of the auxiliary drive system. To allow its customers to benefit from this development, Dayco offers a range of more than 300 water pump kits that provide workshops with the opportunity to increase their profits by combining timing belt kit and water pump replacement. “There is complete logic behind changing both the water pump and timing belt at the same time,” says Dayco UK’s national sales manager, Steve Carolan, “as it provides garages with a profit opportunity and their customers with the confidence that their
30- GARAGETRADER
vehicle has benefitted from a full and thorough repair.
“Sometimes, for the best of intentions, workshops will try to save their customers money and carry out a partial repair by replacing only the component that has failed or is specified for change in the service schedule. However, this policy runs the risk of their customers having to face a much larger bill for a full repair, if the component not replaced goes on to fail at a later date. “Therefore, for the peace-of-mind of motorists, as well as the most profitable result for garages, Dayco recommends they opt for a full timing drive system replacement, rather than change just the water pump or timing belt in isolation. Check & Change “Another important factor that should not be overlooked, is the condition of the auxiliary belt. As it will need to be removed to carry out the water pump/timing belt replacement, technicians have
the ideal opportunity to examine, not only the belt, but the auxiliary tensioner and idlers for any wear and to replace them where necessary.
“To help technicians correctly assess the condition of the belt, they should use a Dayco aWEARness® gauge, which provides them with three ways to check whether the belt needs to be replaced or is okay to be reinstalled. The two most relevant to a standard EPDM belt are the wear indicator bar, which highlights material loss and the profile indicator, revealing whether the belt retains its correct form. Both reflect the level of wear and if the belt fails either check, it must be replaced.” New-to-Range Designated by the KTBWP classification, each kit includes a water pump alongside the belt, tensioner and idler combination, with 75 of these references containing the patented Dayco High Tenacity (HT) or ‘white’ belt. This premium range provides workshops
with all the components necessary to undertake a full water pump and timing drive system replacement. However, to ensure it can provide technicians with the most effective coverage, Dayco is consistently growing its programme and recent additions to the water pump kits range include KTBWP2532 – for 2.0-litre petrol engines fitted to numerous Volkswagen Golf, Passat, Sharan and Bora varients, as well as the Caddy and Transporter LCVs and other VAG applications, KTBWP7941 – for Renault/ Dacia 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol, KTBWP9940 – for the Vauxhall Insignia 2.0-litre CDTI from 200917 and KTBW9950 – for Ford Focus, Mondeo, Kuga, Galaxy, C/S - Max 2.0-litre TDCi and multiple PSA Blue HDi vehicles. Three-Year Warranty When fitting an HT water pump/ timing belt kit, Dayco can also provide workshops and motorists with an even greater level of reassurance by extending its existing two-year warranty by a further year.

WOMEN IN THE MOTOR TRADE
W
omen in the Motor Trade continue to be under-represented, but with vehicles becoming much more hi-tech and the promotion of STEM subjects in school, the trend is changing. Andy Barratt, Chairman and Managing Director, Ford of Britain recently said: “Women continue to be under-represented, our mission is to show that the automotive industry has great career opportunities for women.” He added: “Car companies haven’t seen so much innovation since Henry Ford invented the production line over 100 years ago. As we transition towards smart mobility, there’s truly no better or more exciting time to begin a career in our industry.”
Many manufacturers like Ford are committed to equal career opportunities for employees and promotes diversity at all levels of the business. The motor trade is developing progressive policies to support employees during times of personal change - such as flexible working as a carer or parent, and maternity and paternity workshops when expecting a baby. Manufacturers continues to support government initiatives, including the “Year of Engineering”, and provide local activities, such as Primary Engineer and “IT Girls day”, to encourage girls to consider a career in STEM. We talk to a number of women working in the motor trade in Ireland…
NI and ROI. After getting married and having a family I felt I needed to adjust my work life balance and opted to accept a Management role in the Bank close to home as a Business Relationship Manager. In this role I managed various teams over the years and developed business within my designated area. After a Bank restructure some 10 years later I took the opportunity of some time off with my family with the view to for the first time in my working life decided what I truly wanted to do with my career. I have always enjoyed dealing with customers, driving business, finding new ways of doing things and working within a team setting. The role of Sales Manager for Donnelly Jaguar came at a great time for me, I was absolutely delighted to be afforded the opportunity to work with such a progressive yet family oriented company. What has been the biggest hurdle you’ve had to overcome? Each time I take on a new challenge the bar is raised however probably the biggest challenge to date was taking on a development role for an Insurance company, covering the 26 counties of ROI after having been out of college just 9 months. It was tough but certainly helped me to gain fantastic experience in the world of Sales, Development, Customer Service and Compliance, a great foundation for my future career, the skills I developed then I use today.
What has been your proudest achievement? In my experience those tasks I have worked hardest at gives me the most satisfaction when they translate into success. Sometimes that would be a large contract won, a new customer gained or bringing a positive conclusion to a difficult situation. Each one is as important as the other and thankfully I have been lucky in my career to experience them all at one time or another. Is there anyone in particular you would like to thank for your success? Over the years I have worked with and been mentored by some great people but those that stand out for me are two previous managers Martin Hoy and Lynn Leathem. Both of these individuals I worked with in two separate companies spanning almost 10 years apart but they each believed in my ability and afforded me the freedom to grow and succeed. What has been the best advice you’ve been given? There have been many people over the years who have given me great counsel but probably the best advice I’ve found over the years is to listen to all arguments but pay great attention to your gut instinct. Would you recommend a career in the motor trade to young women? Absolutely, I feel that the Motor Industry is a fantastic environment for young women to develop and enhance key skills that are transferable to any industry.

CAROLINE WILLIS SHELBOURNE MOTORS
Name: Caroline Willis Where do you work? Shelbourne Motors Job Title: Financial Director Did you plan to work in the Motor Trade? Not at all! I never imagined working for my father as part of the family business. But I started to work part-time whilst studying, got a taste for the industry and loved it! I worked my way through various departments, which made me even more passionate about Shelbourne Motors and the industry that we operate in. How did you get where you are today? I’m very fortunate to have gained considerable experience across several departments of the business, under the tutelage of my father, Fred Ward, who passed on tremendous insight into the successful running of a well-structured and operationally sound vehicle retailer. Seeing first hand how hard my father worked to deliver his vision for the family business has instilled in me a commitment to build on his legacy and deliver excellent customer care within all aspects of the business. However, this wouldn’t be achieved without the dedication and hard-work of my brothers, Paul and Richard, and the wider Shelbourne Motors team. What has been the biggest hurdle you’ve had to overcome? Delegation! In my early days, I had a tendency to want to see each and every project through to completion. However, as the business has expanded over the years, I have realised that it’s just not possible to do everything myself. 32- GARAGETRADER

What has been your proudest achievement? Shelbourne Motors celebrating its 45th Anniversary in 2018 and playing my part in helping us go from strength to strength as we reached this significant milestone is my proudest moment in business. Yet, we aren’t resting our laurels and look forward to officially opening our new £5m multifranchise complex in Newry later this year that will further strengthen our position as one of Northern Ireland’s largest family-owned vehicle retailers. Is there anyone in particular you would like to thank for your success? The men in my life; my father Fred, my husband Michael and my brothers Richard and Paul- they will always have my back. What has been the best advice you’ve been given? Don’t ask someone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself. Would you recommend a career in the motor trade to young women? Yes! The motoring trade is an exciting industry to be involved in, yet it is still very male dominated. However, women have started to make waves in the industry with more of us stepping into key leadership roles. Louise O’Sullivan is the perfect example of a role model to all females with the industry having recently been named Network Operations Director of Groupe Renault UK following a promotion from her previous role as Dacia Brand Manager.

I then went to work for CM Accident Repair Center. Whilst there I competed in the Worldskills competition in Sao Paulo Brazil. I got the Bronze medal in car painting. What has been your proudest achievement? My proudest achievement has to be standing on the stage in Sao Paulo accepting the Bronze medal, representing the United Kingdom in a world wide competition. After training for four years for the competition and seeing my hard work pay off and now I’m able to use the skills I learned every day in work. Is there anyone in particular you would like to thank for your success? I have alot of people to thank. I’d like to start with Bell’s for taking me on at the very beginning. Riverpark-Colin and Davey for all the extra training Saturdays and Sundays they gave up to make sure I had the best change at succeeding in Sao Paulo. Colm Mooney (CM accident repair) for supporting me and giving me all the time off I needed for training. My family for backing me from the start and always being there if I was feeling down or homesick. And finally Benny Lennon, my mentor and friend, who spent many hours showing me how to be the best painter I could be. What has been the best advice you’ve been given? “Get up. Get at it, and let your quality of work do the talking for you” Would you recommend a career in the motor trade to young women? Yes definitely. GILLIAN FANNING SERFAC LIMITED
Name: Gillian Fanning Where do you work: Serfac Limited Job Title: Marketing Director (Chairperson, SIMI Wholesalers Committee & Member of SIMI Management Board) Did you plan to work in the Motor Trade? I didn’t plan to work in the motor trade immediately after finishing college, but I guess it was inevitable that I would join the family business at some point in my career. I always intended to gain experience in other industries and businesses first and bring my skills and knowledge back to Serfac.
How did you get where you are today? I started my career in PR consultancy, working with a wide variety of consumer and corporate clients, following which I joined Guinness Ireland as PR Manager. I subsequently held a global change management and comms role with Diageo plc in London, before moving into financial services with another change management position at Bank of Ireland. Having taken some time out when my second child was born, I came to Serfac in 2009 to manage a short-term project and I’m still here! What has been the biggest hurdle you’ve had to overcome? I wouldn’t say I’ve faced any huge hurdles in business, but finding a good work-life balance and dealing with family responsibilities while working has certainly been a challenge over the years. Because I’m a director of a family business, I’m lucky enough these days to have a reasonable amount of flexibility when it comes to working hours. This wasn’t always the case when I worked in other organisations so I really appreciate it now. What has been your proudest achievement? My kids, no doubt about it. Although I’m also proud of my MBA, which was two years of extremely hard graft and pretty
much no social life whilst juggling kids, work and study. Is there anyone in particular you would like to thank for your success? I’d have to say my dad Brian for teaching me most of what I know about the industry and being a great example of how to network and build lasting relationships with suppliers, customers and other key business stakeholders. What has been the best advice you’ve been given? One of my first bosses in PR always stressed the importance of building relationships in business and that the best way of doing this was to look for common ground and shared interests with individuals. Even if you think you have nothing in common with people, you nearly always do. As a result of this advice, I now have a valuable global business network that spans a wide variety of roles and industries and many of the people that I have met through business over the years are now friends too. Would you recommend a career in the motor trade to young women? Absolutely! There are so many different and interesting roles in the trade. As an industry we need to work together to change the cultural perceptions and educate women that when you think of a job in the motor industry, you don’t just think of a male dominated environment but one that consists of many different sectors, diverse roles and great career opportunities. THE NEW YEAR BRINGS EVOLVING RISKS TO THE MOTOR TRADE INDUSTRY

ith electric and hybrid car models emerging and exciting in-vehicle technology on the rise, it’s no surprise that the motor trade industry is in a state of constant change. And while these changes can help ensure business success, they also result in the presence of new risks.
As your workplace advances, be sure your risk management techniques follow suit. Consider the following recommendations: • Routinely update your risk assessment—When your organisation implements new technology or equipment, your risk assessment should be updated
to take those factors into account. Make sure you consider how this technology or equipment will affect workplace processes, employee health and safety, and your insurance. • Train your staff—You can’t expect your employees to be experts on workplace advancements without providing

WILLIS IRM GT target for thieves. Not to mention, cyber-attacks have become a common threat. Implement appropriate security measures to prevent theft and make sure your cyber-practices are compliant with
the GDPR to avoid a breach. One thing that doesn’t change is how expansive the motor trade can be and how important it is to get the correct insurance and risk management techniques in place. As the owner of a motor trade business, the risks you face may be very different from another business in the same industry.
Motor trade cover needs to be as diverse as its industry in order to account for the unique risks facing all motor traders. Road Risks Cover Any motor trade business that involves driving its own or customers’ vehicles will need road risks cover. Road risks policies cover insured vehicles—any motor vehicle that is the property of the insured or in the insured’s custody or control in connection with the business—while on the road or temporarily stored during travel. Road risks cover is available in the following three standard policies: • Third party only policies are legally required and only protect against injury, loss or damage to third parties. • Third party fire and theft policies extend fire and theft cover to a third party only policy. • Comprehensive policies come with a higher excess but substantially protect your cars and the cars in your custody from accidental damage. Excess amounts are not consistent for every business. They can vary greatly depending on the work you do and on your level of risk. Insurers rate business’ risk exposure based on the named drivers or the amount of trade plates; they may also rate according to a points system based on standard motor insurance factors such as: • Claims experience • Location • Type of business and vehicle(s) • Drivers’ records, ages and experience Like standard motor insurance, there may be a possibility of earning a no-claim discount that rewards safe drivers. Additional Cover The sheer diversity of motor trade business means that most motor traders need more cover than
just a road risk policy. Insurers provide policies that combine a number of different covers to mitigate business’ individual risks. In addition to road risks, typical covers include: • Property damage • Glass • Theft • Money • Employers’ liability • Public liability • Business interruption Comprehensive road and garage cover provides the most thorough protection. It incorporates a broad road risk policy and an internal policy that protects against a wide range of liabilities associated with the daily operations of running a motor trade business. But before opting for the most comprehensive, consider adding policy extensions to an existing or more basic policy. Motor trade insurance allows for many extensions, and bespoke policies can be more cost-effective.
Manage Your Risks
Limits and Excess
Your business is exposed to numerous special risks. A complete appraisal of what you face and a bespoke policy will help protect your business and ensure future profitability.
The variability of motor trade policies means you should determine a cover limit that adequately protects your business. You can do this by considering the average value of vehicles in your

care multiplied by the average number of vehicles in your care at any given time. For example, if the average value of your customers’ vehicles is £30,000 and you tend to have 10 vehicles on hand, then you should select a limit of £300,000. You should also select a per-vehicle excess that you would pay in case of a damaging accident in which your business was liable. The insurer then covers the remaining amount up to your limit. This will also vary depending on the number and value of your vehicles. If your vehicles are numerous and inexpensive, a smaller excess would be smarter. On the other hand, only a few very expensive vehicles would call for a higher per-vehicle excess.

SCHAEFFLER TO JOIN OESAA MEMBERS IN IRELAND FOR AUTOINFORM LIVE 2019
S
chaeffler REPXPERTs will be helping improve technicians’ knowedge and providing them with the skills they need to improve their workshop repertoire when delivering invaluable hands-on training and seminars during Autoinform Live 2019. This year’s event will be held at J&S’ Training Centre, near Cork, where Schaeffler will be joining fellow Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association (OESAA) members for a bumper weekend of training on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th April. Throughout the two days, the familiar faces of the REPXPERT team will be demonstrating their knowledge and experience, passing on hints and tips, as well as best practice advice on how to guarantee consistent and accurate professional repairs. REPXPERTs Alistair Mason and Jonny Harris will host a dry double clutch system training course. The pair will demonstrate how double clutch technology works, how it differs between vehicle manufacturers (VMs), such as VAG, Ford, Renault and Fiat, as
well as showing how LuK’s 2CT repair solution can offer new profit opportunities to independent workshops. The delegates will then be offered the opportunity to complete an IMI-approved assessment on one of the systems, which allows them to add double clutch repairs to their workshop menu. Spaces are limited, so visitors are advised to sign-up quickly to avoid disappointment. Sticking with clutch technology, fellow REPXPERT, Bob Carter, will be showcasing some new innovations from LuK, including the latest advances in self-adjusting clutches, concentric slave cylinders, damped flywheel clutches and dual mass flywheels equipped with centrifugal pendulum absorbers. Meanwhile, Tim Adams, who presented at last year’s Autoinform Live in Glasgow, will be joined
by REPXPERT Andy Walters. They will share their accumulated wisdom and experience on INA and FAG products, demonstrating how to avoid the the most common timing belt and wheel bearing installation issues experienced by most workshops. They will also advise delegates on the latest technological developments in belt and hub systems. Schaeffler Managing Director and OESAA Chairman, Nigel Morgan, said: “Autoinform gives independent workshops everything they need to successfully defend and grow their business in an everchanging market, where vehicle
technology evolves on an almost daily basis. “The people best suited to delivering training for these new technologies are the OE suppliers that actually develop the latest components and systems for the VMs, including the members of OESAA, which powers the event.” With several carefully-selected partners and renowned industry figures also in attendance, Autoinform provides a fantastic opportunity for technicians and workshop owners to meet and network – whilst enjoying a whole year’s worth of training in just one weekend.

indscreen wipers are an essential part of vehicle safety which are typically overlooked. The rubber compound that makes up the wiper is continuously exposed to harsh elements such as sunlight, which can cause significant degradation and possible cracking.
A damaged wiper can seriously affect visibility during bad weather, which can subsequently lead to safety issues. This is why a highquality wiper is critical. So, what makes a blade? “It’s just a bit of rubber isn’t it?” Not quite! A modern design beam blade can actually have over a dozen precision engineered components using rubber, plastic, and steel. The coupler is the centre point of the whole blade and must be
extremely robust as not only does it hold the whole blade together, but the coupler design is also integral in distributing the wiper arm pressure evenly down the whole blade length. The steel splines are a sprung steel, rolled to an exact curvature that will hug the windscreen. Splines are powder coated to resist corrosion. The spoiler is made from a dual material, co-extruded plastic and rubber. This slides over the steel splines to protect them from the elements, and the winged shape controls airflow at higher speeds to stop the blade listing from the screen. Different spoiler shapes and sizes can offer different performance benefits, with some deeper asymmetrical spoilers available that can resist windlift at up to 220kph. The end caps are integral to
holding the whole wiper blade together, securing firmly at either end to the metal splines. These, along with the coupler, are manufactured from plastic material which contains a compound to stop the UV light causing the plastic to change colour from black, to grey, to white and helps keep the material from becoming brittle, which can cause it to crack.
And last, but not least…the rubber. An extruded element, with a precision cut wiper blade edge as little as 0.7mm wide. Rubber is blended from a mixture of natural rubber (for the best wipe quality) and synthetic rubber (for durability). One little known fact is that the rubber element has a profile shape that is actually highly engineered to sit on the windscreen
correctly, and also roll over at the top and bottom of the sweep with minimum noise or water drawback. Rather than using just one rubber profile, TRICO use different profiles depending on the blade style and application to always ensure the best performance. It’s the attention to detail on every single one of these components that helps to set TRICO wiper blades apart. Every element is specifically engineered, tested and adapted to work together and offer maximum performance under all conditions.

EXIDE BATTERIES FROM POWERSTORE KEADY
T
o help aftermarket customers maximize rising StartStop servicing opportunities and guide them when making increasingly complex battery choices, Exide is refreshing selected labels and names within its leading light vehicle battery range. The changes further enhance the upselling potential of the range, which contains many Exide OEM technologies that offer future-ready performance and competitive advantages to aftermarket customers. The complete range of Exide batteries is available from Powerstore Keady. The new labels are designed to help simplify Start-Stop and conventional battery choices and build aftermarket awareness of the technologies needed by different powertrains. One key initiative has been devised in response to Exide aftermarket research. Feedback indicated that workshops
sometimes encounter difficulties in differentiating between the various battery technologies and making the right recommendation to customers. This not only wastes fuel-savings for the driver, but also leads to early battery failure. To support best servicing practice, Exide is adding a distinctive, market-first guidance label on its Premium Carbon Boost, Excell and Classic standard flooded LV batteries, to ensure that they are fitted into the right powertrain technology. The company is also taking a further step towards simplifying battery identification. Exide’s latest generation, AGM (absorbent glass mat) and EFB (enhanced flooded battery) aftermarket batteries will no longer have ‘Start-Stop’ as part

of their product names. Instead, an icon on each label will show them as compulsory for Start-Stop vehicles. In addition, a new icon on EFB batteries will show that they offer extra life for conventional
cars too. This highlights the potential to upgrade customers with special requirements, such as high cycling, charge acceptance and more available energy for on-board equipment, to EFB technology.

anner Batteries, available from Charles Hurst Parts, continues to demonstrate its technical prowess with the delivery of battery charges that are designed to provide effortless and safe operation. Serving to complement the company’s existing range of start boosters, test and battery service items, the Power Company’s range of Accuchargers are the latest in intelligent devices that employ advanced microprocessorcontrolled technology. Taking in four models – 6/12V 2A and 12V 3, 6 and 10A – each Accucharger features multi-stage programs to deliver optimum battery care, maximum safety and operational simplicity. Slick in terms of design and functionality, they have been developed to ensure that modern lead-acid batteries attain their anticipated long service life through regular and necessary equalisation charges. What’s more, each Accucharger is more than capable of powering up any starter battery easily, fully automatically and safely. As Lee Quinney, Banner Batteries’ Country Manager in the UK states: “Not only are batteries subject to heavy loads due to the increasing number of power consumer products and systems they have to supply, short trips, irregular driving profiles and cold starts all serve to create a negative charge balance on the battery that can result in a deeply discharged state or, worst still, failure. Fortunately, such problems can be overcome by using an Accucharger, as they operate to ensure a battery exhibits charge equalisation and, in the case of seasonally operated vehicles, charge retention. 42- GARAGETRADER
“In addition to their functionality and suitability for all 6/12V lead acid batteries, they are appealing in terms of their design aesthetics and they have been widely adopted by both our distributors and their customers,” he added. Heading the four model lineup is the Accucharger 6/12V 2A that is fully automatic, and suitable for batteries up to 46Ah; the Accucharger 12V 3A is an ideal all-rounder and suitable for batteries up to 72Ah; for those looking for a universal charging device providing overheating protection is Accucharger 12V 6A that is suitable for batteries up to 130Ah. Completing the line up is Accucharger 12V 10A, which is an ideal candidate for charging larger batteries up to 230Ah associated with SUVs and vans. Key Features: * Automatic 6V and 12V voltage recognition. * Fully automatic, 8-stage battery charging. * Automatic switching to maintaining mode. * Charging voltage of up to 14.7V. * Step-by-step instructions on LED display. * Choice between English, French and German languages. * Robust casing with edge protection. * Top quality, insulated clamps. * Mounting hook. * Protection against reverse polarity and overvoltage. * Protection against sparks and short circuits.

anner Batteries, available from Charles Hurst Parts, is on the charge once again having been voted ‘Supplier of the Year’ at the prestigious and acclaimed 2019 CAT Awards. Now in their 40th year, Banner lifted the flagship CAT award having fought off competition from a number of aftermarket heavyweights, including Mahle Filters and Denso. This latest award accolade is the third ‘Supplier of the Year’ title that Banner has attained in the four years since Country Manager, Lee Quinney, took over stewardship of Banner Batteries’ UK aftermarket operation. In addition to having
successfully kick-started 2016 on the back of having secured the IAAF (Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation) ‘CV Supplier of Excellence Award’, Banner went one better the following year when they fended off the interests of some 19 nominations within the Car Supplier category to lift the esteemed ‘Car Supplier of Excellence’ Award. With this year’s CAT awards being held at Manchester’s premier five star hotel, The Lowry, Banner’s Quinney received the award from editor, Greg Whittaker and

award sponsors, Matthew Bunn of Boswell Aftermarket. As an ecstatic Lee Quinney said: “To build on the awards success that we have enjoyed over the last few years is beyond our wildest expectations. And to be chosen as the CAT ‘Supplier of the Year’ against some tough opposition from some of the aftermarket’s leading exponents makes this award all the sweeter. It goes without saying that such an achievement would never have been possible had it not been as a result of combined efforts of the whole team at Banner. They continue to work tirelessly to drive
forward the company’s ambitious development strategy and the award serves to recognise the hard work, endeavour and enthusiasm that they have shown. “I would also like to thank everyone at CAT for putting on yet another first class awards ceremony, not to mention all of those who took time to vote Banner Batteries. The CAT Awards are arguably one of the most prestigious within the automotive aftermarket and we are understandably delighted to have come out on top this year. GARAGETRADER - 43

THEO ENGLISH
NEW ALL IRELAND DISTRIBUTOR FOR CAR-O-LINER
Clonmel’s Theo English has taken over the sales, servicing and training for Car-O-Liner in Ireland. Theo has a lifetime of experience in the Bodyshop business as his father owned an accident repair centre in the Tipperary town. Theo, of course, became involved from an early age. “My father had a small Bodyshop outside Clonmel. Being a family business, I was involved from an early age. After my father decided to scale back his operations in 2008 I moved to a Business Park in Clonmel and began trading as an Independent Repairer. It was at this point that I invested heavily in Car-O-Liner equipment for the first time. I had known Stuart (Alexander) since Dad purchased a PR8 Spot Welder many years previously. From that point I was a fan of Car-O-Liner equipment and always found Stuart to be extremely knowledgeable and helpful. As the business developed over the next few years I sought to gain some work provision from Insurers and this led me to coming in contact with Ace Autobody.” REWARDING ROLE
Theo’s Bodyshop had developed and expanded over a five year period until Ace Autobody bought his business along with another Bodyshop in Clonmel. For the next year and a half Theo managed Ace Autobody Clonmel. This was a challenging but rewarding role, where he gained a valuable education in the repair industry. The opportunity then arose for Theo to join Crown Paints as a Technical Representative, looking after the Axalta brands, SpiesHecker, Standox, Cromax and more recently Syrox. This was a technical role which saw Theo visit many Bodyshops around Ireland. Even during the two years he was
with Crown, Theo still kept in touch with Stuart and as the need arose in the recent years the pair decided to implement a closer working relationship, to promote the Car-O-Liner brand in Ireland. “We were probably talking about it for a couple of years,” says Theo, “but in January 2019 I set up my own business as an independent company distributing Car-O-Liner products around Ireland, looking after sales, servicing, calibrations and training.” Theo has already had many training sessions in the UK and heads off to Sweden shortly for training at CarO-Liners world headquarters . TRAINING “I am also going to look after

training here in Ireland,” says Theo. “I retained my old premises in Clonmel and I am currently installing the latest Car-O-Liner equipment there in order to be in a position to provide the most up to date training methods in the Industry for Technicians from all over the country. “The real beauty of what we are creating here is that its completely new and innovative. The Industry is crying out for the training and development of both new and existing Technicians. We are in the privileged position to be able to offer Car-O-Liner backed training and Certification on a local level from a global industry leader.
“Vehicle repairs have and will dramatically increase in sophistication in the immediate future. The ongoing viability of our Bodyshops will be dependent on the levels of Knowledge and Skill they possess. Our aim is to be a partner to these businesses, because ultimately, we care about the future of our Industry. As a Bodyshop owner I always craved knowledge and information in the pursuit of quality repairs and a profitable business. It is that same fundamental that both myself and Stuart are aiming to help our customers with well into the future.” GARAGETRADER - 47

This award is on top of the apprentices’ wage and will be paid in three parts over three years. This is a substantial investment being made by Crash Services to help support new talent. To be eligible, applicants must first gain an apprenticeship through Riverpark Training and then apply to Crash Services, detailing the reasons why they should be given this award. Applicants must also be completing their apprenticeships in a Crash Services affiliated bodyshop.

Employers should note that providing a “job experience role” isn’t enough to attract keen young people. Providing them with a career path, employment, and showing them what they can achieve will be more productive to the future of the industry. It will promote progress and waste less time on unreliable students who have no loyalty to their work placement provider. In our opinion, much time is wasted in companies who have to change students constantly until they find the one with the right calibre. It is easier to have that filtering system at the start of engagement with young people to reduce costs to the company in the long run. This applies to small, medium and large companies and it takes a good training provider to follow up the selection process with the necessary support to provide an effective apprenticeship for both the apprentice and company. and can last a long time before replacement is due. Although relatively inexpensive, their metallic composition is a hindrance as well as a help: it can assist in drawing heat away from the rotor and aid in more efficient brake cooling; however, it also means they are prone to more noise and dust.
Organic Brake Pads Organic brake pads (also known as NAO, or ‘non-asbestos organic’) are made from other non-metallic materials, such as glass, rubber, high-heat resins and Kevlar, and were developed as an alternative to asbestos pads. They have now evolved to offer ‘greener’ benefits than other brake pads as the materials they are made from are easy to dispose of and create less pollutants.
Ceramic Brake Pads The most recent development in friction material technology is the ceramic brake pad. Consisting of a dense ceramic material, it was developed as an alternative replacement for organic and semimetallic brake pads as at the time, these types produced excessive noise and dust. As they dissipate heat extremely well and are made of an incredibly lightweight material, they are an excellent choice for high-performance vehicles. This type of pad breaks down very slowly, and is also generally easier on rotors than semi-metallic pads. Lumag’s Breck brand has

friction parameters, lack of vibration, limited dust generation, silent operation and efficient vehicle retardation, can offer a real differential in terms of safety and performance for both passenger vehicles and luxury sports cars.

Tell us about your career so far? I have been working in the Motor Industry 23 years now. I left school and commenced with an apprenticeship in Vehicle Accident Repair. Shortly after completing that, I moved to the Commercial Vehicle sector repairing and refinishing where I really developed skills as a spray painter. I then spent a number of years working for Charles Hurst Accident Repair before eventually progressing into the education sector delivering apprenticeship training for Riverpark Training. Did you plan to get involved in this industry? 54- GARAGETRADER
Yes, I had planned to leave school to work as a mechanic, however after working a summer job in an accident repair workshop, I then decided I wanted to work in accident repair. What was your biggest disappointment? My biggest disappointment would have been being out of work in accident repair for a brief period after completing my apprenticeship. What was the best piece of advice you ever received? Best advice was given to me during
my apprenticeship. I was told “If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing right”. Whom do you most admire? My wife – for looking after me and my 2 kids.
You’ve won the lottery. What car would you rush out and buy? One of my favorite cars would be an Aston Martin. How do you relax?
What is the most difficult aspect of your job?
Spending time with family and watching a good movie.
The most difficult part of my job is when work requires me to stay away from home on certain occasions.
Tell us something surprising about yourself…
What is your most effective or personal asset? Being succinct.
I enjoy cycling - competing regularly at an amateur level entering open road races and time trials.
