COMMENT Running a successful bodyshop is not an easy proposition in the current economic climate. The ever increasing price of parts, paint, labour and courtesy cars conflicts with the tight rein on pricing by the insurance companies so Garage Trader was delighted to feature the new workshop at Lloyd Cooke Motors in this edition. Lloyd Cooke opened his workshop 45 years ago and since then he has expanded and extended the operation. The latest addition to the premises features a state of the art Spanesi Michelangelo Rapid Repair system as well as the latest Hella Gutmann camera and radar calibration equipment as well as a Vixen wheel repair system. Our best wishes go to Lloyd on his family for further success in the future. The Northern Ireland new car sales figures showed a slight upturn in the first quarter of 2017, helped in some way by the governments new car tax scheme which came into effect on 1st April. There might only have been a 0.8 per cent rise in March, but the Year to Date sales of 18,962 is the best in 10 years. It will be interesting to see if this success can be sustained in the second quarter of the year. - Pat Burns - Editor Follow us on Garage Trader Magazine

through online, and will launch a new website in 2017 to enhance operational efficiencies further. Andy Bruce, chief executive, said: “I am pleased to announce an excellent set of year end results. Our profit is at record levels and has increased for the eighth consecutive year - evidence of both an expansive and a resilient business model. “We know our strategy of having the right brands in the right locations, supported by excellent execution is the right one - and during the year we’ve managed our portfolio of dealerships to reflect that.

Andy Bruce, Chief Excutive of Lookers

Celebrating an eighth consecutive year of turnover and profit growth, Lookers plc, parent company of Northern Ireland’s largest motor retailer Charles Hurst Group, boosted its revenues by 17% to £4.3 billion in 2016, with much of its growth coming from increased sales at its existing businesses. Although the group acquired Knights BMW and Mini and Drayton Mercedes-Benz and Smart businesses, its trading results show

its motor division’s turnover rose by £658 million, of which acquisitions contributed only £131m. Chief executive Andy Bruce said it was “pleasing to see organic growth in turnover of £527m”. Pre-tax profits increased by 46% to 91.8m, however this included a £28m one-off gain from Lookers’ sale of its wholesale parts division to Alliance Automotive, which was completed in order to free cash for expansion of the franchised dealership portfolio in its motor division.

Adjusted pre-tax profit rose 7% to £77.1m. Adjusted operating profit was 10% up at £94.7m. Lookers said it undertook a review of its franchised operations in 2016 and sold or closed 10 underperforming businesses as a result.

-Jeep, -1.8, experienced the greatest decrease. When looking at dealers’ degree of satisfaction with their ‘future profit return’, the situation remains very similar. -The average score was 5.6, 0.3 points down on the summer’s survey. -Mercedes had the highest score with 9.1 points, an increase of 0.1 on last summer. Kia held again the second place with 8.8 points and an improvement of 0.2, Lexus followed with 8.1 points. -Citroen was the lowest scoring franchise with 3.2 points, a further decline of 0.3. NFDA Dealer Profitability Report The latest National Franchised Dealer Report (NFDA) shows a slight increase in expected future profits from most car dealers, with Mercedes dealers topping the list. “It is positive to see that when evaluating their satisfaction with profit return, the majority of dealers gave a response which was higher than the neutral score of 5.0*. However, the average score for both current and future profit return has decreased again compared with the last survey”, said Sue Robinson, Director of the National Franchised Dealers Association, commenting on the results of the NFDA Winter 2017 Dealer Attitude Survey. We will be making more acquisitions and have the balance sheet strength to do so. “We’ve made a good start to the current financial year and have a healthy order book for the delivery of new cars in the important month of March. Robinson concluded, “It is interesting to see that, on average, dealers seem to be more positive about their future profit return than their current one, showing a certain degree of optimism. “Questions about profit return have seen a steadily decreasing trend over the past years. To maintain a healthy and strong working relationship with their manufacturers, it is vital that dealers continue to clearly see the profitability of their businesses.”

Nearly half of drivers don’t trust a car salesman after feeling overcharged and mis-sold finance and insurance products when buying from a dealership. Research from the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), the professional body for the automotive sector, has found that finance and insurance (F&I) products are added to 60% of all car purchases. However 45% of drivers said they felt pressured by a salesman to buy add-ons when they most recently bought a car from a dealership or garage. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has implemented changes to the Consumer Credit Act which aims to stop drivers being mis-sold finance and insurance products. Yet 42% of car buyers said they had avoided a dealership due to the lack of trust. According to the IMI research this mis-trust could be avoided, with 64% saying buying a car would be easier if the people they were buying from were members of a regulated body. Over half said they would feel more comfortable making financial decisions relating

to a car purchase if additional measures were in place to ensure they weren’t overcharged Steve Nash, Chief Executive at IMI, said: “Our research highlights that nearly two thirds (63%) of car buyers find the process stressful, therefore it’s our role to restore consumer confidence by improving the car buying experience. This research however does underline why it’s the right time for the retail motor industry to take more responsibility to ensure anybody selling finance and insurance products has the correct training to be able to help drivers decide whether or not they would like to buy these extras when purchasing a vehicle. “The IMI F&I Accreditation helps safeguard customers by ensuring the salesman is giving accurate and truthful information. It also gives the car salesman the knowledge to be able to identify which products, if any, are suitable for that individual customer. This training is just one step further in ensuring the industry is providing a good quality and honest service.”

Move Up A Gear at TTS Over 80 people from the NI Transport and Motor Industries enjoyed a free lunch event at TTS recently. Facilitated by Transport Training Services, The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport and Willis Towers Watson. The main speaker was Mark Gallagher who shared some of the challenges Formula 1 have coped with in his 30 years plus experience. For instance, manufacturers insistence on making F1 technology relevant to future road vehicles R&D, hence the move to hybrid race cars. Mark explained how F1 dealt with the challenge of pitstops and went from 20 seconds to less than 2 to change wheels and refuel and how, with detailed analysis and dedicated motivated people, Williams went from consistently being the slowest to currently holding the record for the fastest pitstop. The conclusion drawn from Mark’s enlightening talk is that it’s not all about budget or resources, the single most important factor to F1 success is having talented people working together as an efficient

Riverpark Training

Salvage Vehicles or Repairable Vehicles? By Colin Hagan MBE, Managing Director, Riverpark Training a high price, on internet salvage sites vehicles are being sold at 40% of their retail value.

In Northern Ireland and throughout the island of Ireland we have good quality technicians achieving ATA standards and bodyshops achieving BSI 10125 and CSS standards. These standards are in place to protect the motorist from having their vehicle repaired incorrectly or even dangerously. Why then does vehicle salvage now command such

The vehicles, being bought from these sites, are not being repaired by the good quality bodyshops with the quality standards in place and who have the expertise to know how different repair methods need to be applied to different vehicles. So who are repairing these vehicles and worse still who is buying them and driving potentially dangerous

vehicles? In some cases, these are smaller bodyshops who use this as a method of supplementing their income but some are by weekend workshops with limited skill and knowledge. Some smaller bodyshops sometimes are unaware of the changing structures now in modern vehicle construction and could easily repair a vehicle not knowing of the potential risk. We would urge all currently engaged with this sector of the repair industry to source the correct repair methods prior to repair or better still prior to purchase. From November 2016 to February 2017 Riverpark Training teamed up with the Northern Ireland Bodyshop Alliance and provided training advice and support at 6 venues all over Northern Ireland. The motivation was to educate and support small bodyshops to assist them make the correct repair to structural damaged vehicles. Hopefully this message has got through as we all want to repair vehicles correctly.

Riverpark Training will be engaging with the Stormont Executive later in the year to put a proposal to them to set up a law in Northern Ireland to ensure repaired salvage vehicles are inspected rigorously during and after repair. Parts receipts should also be retained by the repairer and presented at final inspection. The cost of this inspection process should be between £250 to £500 depending on value and prestige of vehicle, this way a valued inspection can take place and the concern of the everyday motorist, on repaired vehicles, can be improved. Bodyshops should also see an advantage, if the price of salvage is driven down by adding to salvage repair costs then more vehicles will be repaired by the industry through insurance claims and less time wasted on estimates that reflect total loss. Your support on this would be gratefully appreciated and a petition of support can be obtained by request from riverparktraining@ btconnect.com

NIBA 2017 Campaign Objectives

The Northern Ireland Bodyshop Alliance has set out it’s campaign objectives for 2017.

The Northern Ireland Bodyshop Alliance is a network of local car repairers representing more than 50 independent garages employing over 200 staff with its membership predominately made up of ownerrun independent bodyshops. NIBA launched a ‘Your Car Your Choice’ campaign in 2015 and in 2016 released the findings of the first major study into the quality of NON-OEM parts that are often mandated by insurance companies in the repair of motor vehicles. What are the consumer issues that NIBA want addressed? NIBA Members are concerned that the practices of some insurance are having a detrimental effect on NI consumers- mostly prominent are safety concerns. 8- GARAGETRADER

In particular NIBA wishes the following issues to be addressed: 1. Policyholders to have the freedom to choose their own repairer rather than being steered by financial or other pressures from their insurance company to use a repairer of its choice. 2. Policyholders vehicles not to be repaired using non-OEM parts without their agreement or a full understanding of the impact on their vehicle warranties and safety. 3. Policyholder’s vehicles to be independently assessed rather than repair processes and methods being mandated by insurance company’s own motor assessors. NIBA suggests that the constant drive of insurance companies to cut costs has a knock on effect on consumer choice and service as well as a negative impact on local employment.

What are the trade issues that NIBA want addressed? NIBA are focused on helping apprentices enter the industry and start successful careers within in it, as well as ensuring current and potential bodyshops profitability are not put in jeopardy due to undue pressures from Insurance companies. NIBA wants for its members: 1. A dynamic, exciting industry that attracts apprentices into well-paid and highly skilled careers. 2. Bring transparency to consumer’s treatments by insurers over car repairs; allowing all members, and indeed non-members, to compete fairly with each other. 3. The creation of an

Independent arbiter of disputes between insurance companies and independent car repairers.

Lloyd Cooke Motors GT EXPLOITING THE OPPORTUNITIES OF ADAS Lloyd Cooke Motors has installed the latest ADAS system from Hella Gutmann Solutions. ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) technology is already in use in hundreds of thousands of vehicles, which is why it is imperative that cameras and radar sensors used by these complex systems are recalibrated to ensure their correct operation, not just following accident repair or windscreen replacement, but after everyday service and repair work such as steering and suspension replacement and adjustment to the vehicle’s geometry. Failure to calibrate the ADAS camera or sensor can lead to inaccurate information being fed back to the system’s computer, causing these vital safety features to operate incorrectly. Workshop technicians therefore, need to be up to speed with these latest developments, as no one is immune from this technology and/or the procedures required to reset safety systems. Today, ultrasonic medium range radar, cameras, lidar and long-range radars are utilised, often in unison, to control various systems, so there is very little of a modern vehicle’s surroundings that are not covered by these systems.

These systems are based on a relationship between a mechanical setting (i.e. the car’s axis) and an electronic input. If the vehicle is not calibrated correctly then whatever system the ECU controls, will perform an incorrect action. Therefore, the debate is not

ultimately about whether system checks and recalibration should be undertaken, rather it is about having knowledge of the systems and the equipment to carry it out. Once this has been realised, it must also be understood that the vehicle manufacturer’s (VM) calibration is final, which is why HGS’s hardware and VM hardware follow the same calibration process, thus allowing the independent the opportunity to compete at the same level as the franchised dealer. Without the existence of industry licensing related to service work to these critical safety systems, HGS naturally offers its customers full training to enable them to accurately and proficiently carry out the recalibration process. This not only ensures users can fully exploit the opportunities the equipment provides, it also gives motorists the peace of mind that they require. Another benefit that comes with this training is the realisation that provided the set up procedure is carried out in a standard workshop with a good quality floor and the technician follows the clearly defined and straightforward process, the work doesn’t need to be undertaken by a highly skilled individual.

This is primarily because the static calibration provided by the HGS camera & sensor calibration tool (CSC-Tool), which encompasses calibration panels, panel stand and wheel alignment accessories and works in conjunction with the software installed as a standard feature in every HGS mega macs diagnostic tool, is completed at the touch of a button once the panels are correctly aligned. With more than 30 years of knowledge in the field of vehicle diagnostics, HGS provides the independent workshop with the repair solution to virtually every service related problem and as market leaders in ADAS calibration, it offers the widest multi-brand solution to this challenge, covering more than 92% of the UK car parc.

Testament to its position in the market comes from, among other prominent organisations within the industry, Thatcham Research. Thatcham Research, the motor insurers’ automotive research centre, has long recognised the importance of ADAS and the far reaching implications that technologies such as AEB (autonomous emergency braking) and LDW (lane departure warning) have for the insurance industry and crash repair sector, which is why it has chosen to invest in a Hella Gutmann Solutions CSC-Tool for its test facility. Infiniti

Infiniti range now available in Ireland

Gary Connolly, Sales Manager, Infiniti

Mervyn Stewart Infiniti is the first Infiniti dealership to open on the island of Ireland and is already reporting strong interest in the range from their pop-up dealership on Belfast’s Boucher Crescent. What’s more work has already commenced on the new Mervyn Stewart Infiniti Showroom which is scheduled to open its doors in late Spring. Infiniti sales throughout the UK as well as the rest of Europe and the USA are rising sharply and are doubling year on year. The Infiniti range comprises 5 different models. The Q30 hatchback was launched in January 2016 and is built in Sunderland. The QX30 is the SUV version of the hatchback and both compete in the C-Segment. The range offers both petrol and diesel, manual and automatic versions as well as 2 and 4 wheel drive. The Q30 1.5 diesel is the top selling engine due to its price point and performance statistics. QX30 is only available with a 2.2d engine, All–Wheel Drive and DCT 20- GARAGETRADER

transmission and has a starting price of £30,195 for the Premium model. The Q50 sports saloon is the best selling model in the Infiniti range and has just been revised and now offers buyers a higher level of personalisation and driving engagement, bringing Infiniti’s signature design, empowering driver technology, and exhilarating performance to the sports saloon segment. The enhanced sports saloon retains its sleek proportions and athletic stance, while establishing greater visual differentiation between model versions, including the performance-inspired ‘Red Sport 400’. Changes to the interior blend artistry with innovation, with stitching and the use of authentic materials further elevating the level of craftsmanship inside the Q50. The Q50 delivers a powerful and rewarding drive thanks to innovative powertrains, including the award-winning 3.0-litre V6

twin-turbo engine from the new and exclusive ‘VR’ powertrain family, which was recently named on the prestigious 2017 Ward’s ‘10 Best Engines’ list. The Q60 sports coupe is a strong seller in the D Coupe Segment. The all-new Q60 is available in two powertrains: a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine producing 208hp and a 3.0 litre V6 twin-turbo version producing 400hp. The Q60 is available with state of the art features, such as Infiniti’s second-generation Direct Adaptive Steering, the new Dynamic Digital Suspension, and the Drive Mode Selector. The largest saloon in the range is the Q70. The upgraded lineup starts with a new Q70 2.2d model, powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine developed as part of Infiniti’s strategic cooperation with Daimler. Mated to a standard seven-speed automatic transmission with available paddleshift (depending on model), the new 2.2 diesel unit in

the Q70 emits just 129g/km of CO2 while offering stirring performance thanks to 170PS and a generous 400NM of torque. Replacing the 3.0-litre V6 diesel in the Q70 range, the new Q70 Premium 2.2d is priced from £34,260. The car comes as standard with full LED headlights, chromed accents on the front grille, a rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, with standard Connectiviti+ navigation, 18-inch wheels and leather seats with ventilation, in what is a typically generous Infiniti standard specification. It is expected that such attractive pricing for a large premium saloon endowed with exceptional technology and equipment will make the new Q70 2.2d model the most popular Q70 variant in the UK market. OIL SYSTEM CLEANER This

highly effective product removes operational cause contamination in the entire oil and lubrication system. It neutralises harmful engine acid, minimises emissions, optimises the engine performance, reduces oil and fuel consumption and extends the life time of the engine.

FUEL CLEANERS remove

small dirt from the diesel system. Destroys and absorbs water bubbles in the fuel. Recommended for all diesel engines with SOOT particle filter, CAT and Turbo.

OXICAT works as an oxide after the

combustion process. It becomes a vapour called ‘Cerium Oxide’ which is attracted to carbon particles like a magnet attracts metal. Once attracted to the carbon it will cause a flash point which will burn away the carbon build up, ie egr valves and variable vein turbos.

NANO forms a highly efficient nano

and anti-friction barrier in the oil and optimises the operational efficiency of the engine. Improves oil flow during cold start, smoother and quieter engine running, increased performance, extended life span of equipment, excellent run dry properties, and fuel consumption will be reduced.

TECH TIPS

FORD C-MAX 1.6-LITRE TDCi DIESEL TIMING BELT KIT INSTALLATION The 1.6-litre TDCi diesel engine used in the Ford C-MAX, as well as several Citroën, Mini, Peugeot and Volvo models, features a timing belt driven water pump. As replacing the belt also requires the auxiliary drive system to be removed, Dayco recommend that all the systems’ components - timing drive and auxiliary drive be replaced at the same time. This step-by-step technical guide will help technicians through the process, to avoid complications and ensure a first-rate job. As with all primary drive system jobs, the work should be undertaken when the engine is cold, so ideally the vehicle will not have been run for at least four hours. Remove the cowling from within the front wheel arch of the driver’s side to expose the auxiliary belt system. Slacken the auxiliary belt tensioner with a spanner and hold the tensioner in position with a 6mm pin (figure 1) in order to take off the belt, then remove the tensioner, followed by the crankshaft pulley. This will reveal the phonic sensor and the RPM sensor connector, which needs to be disconnected. Remove the lower screws of the timing case and then move the coolant reservoir to one side to gain access to the engine mount, which once the engine has been suitably supported from below, needs to be removed, along with the engine mount flange. Then remove the upper half of the timing case, which allows the bottom half to be removed and exposes the timing drive system. Using a suitable pin, such as drill bit, hold the camshaft pulley in its timing position. The crankshaft timing must be carried out with a pin inserted in a hole in the engine

block (see picture box in figure 2) and as this is difficult to reach, it is wise to paint a mark on the crankshaft pinion and engine case. Loosen the bolt on the timing belt tensioner and remove both bolt and tensioner, followed by the timing belt. Replace the idler with the new one from the Dayco kit KTBWP4930 and tighten the nut to 35Nm. Using another suitable pin, hold the fuel injection pump pulley in the correct position and then remove the water pump. Ensuring that the cooling system has been flushed through and no debris is present, install the new Dayco water pump, complete with its seal, followed by the new tensioner, taking care to position it as shown (figure 3). While observing its direction of rotating arrows, install the new HT timing belt, with its slack section facing the tensioner. With an Allan key, rotate the tensioner anticlockwise to tension the belt correctly and tighten the bolt to 25Nm and then rotate the engine and check the timing. The correct belt tension has been achieved if the tensioner is positioned as indicated (figure 4). Naturally, repeat the process if necessary. Refit all the components in their reverse order, but check, and if necessary, replace the crankshaft pulley with Dayco DPV1068, the fastener for which should be tightened to 30Nm + 180, and the auxiliary belt tensioner APV1076. However, Dayco recommend the auxiliary belt 6PK975 is always replaced. NEWS Garage Trader talks to Carcessories celebrate Gary Beggs who has just 60 years of business started with Somora Motor Parts…

Q: Did you plan to get involved in the Motor Trade? I’ve always been involved in the Motor Trade in one way or another. I’ve had my own business for 30 years before selling. I then became an Area Sales Manager (Ireland) for a Crash Repair Company before moving to the premier league to join Somora Motor Parts.

Q: Are you a petrolhead? Totally - I have always had an obsession for Cars / Car Parts and keeping up to date with the latest trends and technology. Q: Where were you previously? I was a partner in Belfast Brake Specialists (BBS) and over a 27 year period developed a fantastic business relationship with all Northern Ireland motor factors and car body repair companies. This experience and longstanding friendships built up over many years made the transition to Somora seamless as I it meant doing business with the same people.

a big factor in achieving this. I also intend to build a close working relationship with all management and staff at Somora and with all my existing and new customers. Q: What do you think will be the most difficult aspects of the job? To be honest I feel the stability of currency with the recent Brexit decision could be a problem but I feel that the quality of Somora products along with the excellent delivery and customer service focus from Somora will be the deciding factor for customers.

Dublin based motor factor Carcessories are celebrating sixty years of business this year. The company was opened by Robin Cosgrave on Lower Mount Street in Dublin in 1957 and over the years it has expanded and progressed into a 20,000 square feet modern warehouse facility on the JF Kennedy Industrial Estate. One of the first lines that the company handled was Romac tyre repair equipment which it supplied to the trade in the locality but now the company has a vast range available from the likes of Mannol Oils, PCL, WD40 and Turtle Wax and currently supplies

to independent motor factors across the country. Robin’s son Conor now runs the company along with Sales Director Greg Lonergan and Carcessories has a staff of 27 people with 3 salesmen on the road. There will be special offers and promotions available to motor factors to celebrate the anniversary year.

How safe is your vehicle service lift?

Q: What are your favourite hobbies / pastimes? My hobbies are my grandchildren, holidays with my beautiful wife and I enjoy nothing more than family gatherings with my wife, two daughters and my son along with my five grandchildren.

Q: What are your goals in the job? My goals are to use my experience to achieve maximum market penetration in Northern Ireland for Somora Motor Parts and I believe my determination and drive will be Page 2 gea_1_Layout 1 18/03/2014 13:06

As you stand under your workshop lift with two or three tonnes of vehicle on it do you know whether the person who installed or last serviced it was properly trained to do so?

When it comes to vehicle lifts, the installation work is as important as the manufacturing process. However, this work is often conducted by an installation and maintenance company and may be out of the direct control of the lift manufacturer. All lifts, apart from mobile column lifts, rely on correct installation; therefore the British Standards Institute (BSI) has produced a standard for vehicle

lift installation known as BS 7980:2003+A1: 2012, which has become the lift engineer’s bible. The Garage equipment Association (GEA) runs an accreditation scheme which checks that a lift engineer fully understands the regulations and standards involved in lift installation and maintenance. Therefore for peace of mind, always have your lift installed by a GEA Accredited Lift Engineer who understands all the regulations and standards and follows the correct guidance and procedures provided by the lift manufacturer.

IS YOUR VEHICLE LIFT SAFE? By regulation, vehicle lifts must be inspected and maintained by a competent person. Visit www.gea.co.uk to find a list of companies who have their engineers independently accredited by the Garage Equipment Association.

KYB

KYB Suspension Solutions

KYB Europe has a number of support tools available for technicians and distributors, under the umbrella of ‘KYB Suspension Solutions’. The latest addition is the launch of 360 degree images of KYB Macpherson struts and semi struts. Over 1,700 different references are available to view. The images rotate completely and users can also zoom in on the 3D image to see more detail if required. The images will help technicians and distributors to identify the correct part for their vehicle, increasing the efficiency of the ordering process.

2D photos are already available in the TecDoc catalogue for over 5,600 references across all ranges. Once the TecDoc software has the capacity to display 3D images, these will also be uploaded. The 3D rotating images are available on the KYB Europe website at 360.kybeurope.com. KYB has been working hard over the past few years to provide support tools for technicians and distributors to make their job easier. Jordan Day, Marketing Manager for KYB Europe Aftermarket, explains “we have had great feedback to the innovative tools we have developed for our customers and we have even more exciting plans to come”. Another tool offered by KYB Europe GmbH Aftermarket is a market leading range of fitting videos on its YouTube channel. KYB launched videos featuring difficult shock absorber replacements four years ago. The number of videos has been increasing steadily and there are now more than 130 fitting videos,

34- GARAGETRADER

covering over 400 different vehicle applications. The fitting videos have been viewed two million times, with over 100,000 views per month, having over 240,000 minutes per month watched. KYB leads the search results when looking for fitting videos for specific vehicles, showing the importance of replacing shock absorbers correctly and safely using the right tools and geometry settings. The most watched fitting video demonstrates the procedure for the front of a Peugeot 307 & 308 and Citroen C4. To replace the front shock absorbers on this vehicle, it’s quite a long process. It’s necessary to remove the windscreen wipers, scuttle panel and various other components to access the top bolt. The range of videos can be viewed at youtube.com/kybeurope. They are also linked to KYB Europe’s QR code tool – if technicians see a QR code next to a spanner icon on a KYB shock absorber box, they can scan the code with a smart phone to

access fitting instructions specific to that vehicle. If any technicians know of a specific vehicle where it is difficult to replace the shock absorbers, KYB would love to hear about it, as it may be possible to make a fitting video to support them – they can send the vehicle details to QR@ kyb-europe.com.

OPTIMAL NEW: quadruple protection and maximum impermeability from Optimal Depending on the region, method of use and season, wheel bearings are exposed to particularly strong environmental influences. In particular, large quantities of dust, sand, salt, water and mud permeate the seals, shortening the lifespan of the wheel bearings. The solution is to use cassette seals with four sealing lips to boost the level of impermeability. The benefits include: 4 point seal. Four innovatively arranged lips now provide better retention of bearing grease on the inside and give added protection against water, sand and other dirt penetrating particles from the outside. Additional protective metal. Besides the greater impermeability provided by the additional lips, an extra metal plate protects the sealing lips against weather conditions.

NBR rubber. The rubber seal used in the bearings is made from acrylic nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and provides optimum resistance to oil, grease and other hydrocarbon compounds. This type of rubber remains elastic for longer and suffers less abrasive wear. Market coverage: At the time of their launch, the new double-row ball bearings from OPTIMAL are already available for 32 percent of all vehicle models. The range will be continuously updated and extended.

TECH TIPS

GT GT

Transmission Automatic transmission fluid Technical change made easy Tips from Comma Oils

Replacing the oil in an automatic transmission is more difficult and poses more possibilities for mistakes than changing the motor oil. To make this work easier for workshops, the German motor oil and additive specialist LIQUI MOLY has developed a high-tech machine, that can do more than just flush and replenish fluid: the Gear Tronic. It will be presented for the first time in the United Kingdom at Automechanika Birmingham. “Gear Tronic makes even a complicated process child’s play and thereby opens up an additional income option to the garage,” says Ibrahim Memis, responsible for the LIQUI MOLY business in the UK. Unlike with motor oil, with automatic transmission fluid change it is not sufficient to simply release the oil drain plug. This would only allow a third of the oil to drain away. In any case, transmission fluid cannot simply be drained and then replenished with new fluid. Instead, replacement is a dynamic process: The filling quantity in the automatic transmission must remain the same throughout the entire process. Otherwise the vehicle’s electronic system reports an error. A complicated matter, therefore, which is not without risk. “Without the right tools a lot can go wrong, irritating both customers and the workshop itself”, explains Ibrahim Memis. The garage has the right tool in Gear Tronic. The machine 36- GARAGETRADER

and the additives developed for it enable professional mechanics to offer complete transmission oil service including cleaning, flushing and re-filling. This machine ensures that the lubricant is replaced completely, which was not possible previously. The process is monitored by two digital scales, to ensure that the quantity of new fluid added to the transmission is exactly equal to the quantity of old fluid taken out. “This means that workshops can not only offer a transmission oil change, but also additional services such as thorough cleaning and extra care of the transmission,” says Ibrahim Memis. The second innovation that LIQUI MOLY is presenting to the UK market are the Molygen New Generation oils. These are special motor oils that differ from all other oils. This is evident when simply pouring it in, for they are not brown, but greenish. This green comes from the special wear protection, which is based on tungsten, among other substances. The chemical agents smooth the metallic surfaces in the engine and even out tiny, microscopic bumps. This reduces friction in the engine and therefore also fuel consumption. Furthermore, they protect against wear. Unlike conventional motor oil of the same quality, they reduce wear by up to 30 percent.

What are Gear & Transmission Oils? Gear & Transmission oils are oils that lubricate the drive train of a vehicle – that’s any component that is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the drive wheels. The major components of the drivetrain are the transmission, or gearbox, and the differential or final drive. Depending on your type of vehicle these components come in various shapes, sizes and orientations but they are always present and they always need lubrication. What happens if the wrong fluid is used? Not using the right product can cause serious performance issues and even render the vehicle undriveable as different gearboxes and differentials have different lubrication requirements. Remember, gear oils come with industry/ manufacturer’s specifications and not using a product that meets the requirements can void warranties. How to get it right? Use our online product finder at CommaOil.com to find the right Gear & Transmission oil recommendation for a vehicle and it’s covered. We stand behind all our industry-leading application data with a written Compatibility Guarantee. Quite simply, our Guarantee gives Motor factors and technicians - especially those servicing in-warranty vehicles under EU Block Exemption provisions - complete confidence to use Comma’s application data to specify the correct oil for passenger car and LCV applications dating back more than 30 years. It also covers engine oil, brake fluid, antifreeze & coolant and power steering fluid recommendations. Q. Why is there no gear & transmission oil recommended for some vehicles? A. Comma’s range of gear and

transmission oils cover a large part of the UK vehicle parc, however transmission oils can be very complex and sophisticated and are sometimes developed along with the transmission manufacturer; therefore the specification or viscosity is very specialised, so in some cases we cannot always recommend a product, however you can contact our Technical support helpline on +44 (0) 1474 546 318 for additional advice. Q. Can I use a gear & transmission oil with the specification API GL-5 instead of API GL-4? A. Usually when vehicle manufacturers recommend a GL-4 gear oil, this is what should be used. We would not suggest the use of a GL-5 version in these cases. It may cause difficulty in changing gear or in some extreme cases can lead to not being able to change gear at all. Some vehicle manufacturers will allow for both specifications to be used, however, generally GL-4 products are used in gearboxes and GL-5 in differentials. Q. Why do some vehicles list an engine oil as the transmission oil recommendation? A. This is due to what the vehicle manufacturer has specified as the most suitable specification. Its typically more common in older vehicles where an API S or C as a xW-30/xW-40 grade was required. Q. Why do some vehicles list an automatic transmission oil for a manual transmission and vice versa? A. This is again due to what the vehicle manufacturer has specified as the most suitable specification. This is usually only seen in a small number of cases where the automatic or semiautomatic transmission is based on the manual version.

Browne and Day celebrate 70 years in business with charity minibus fundraising

Claudy Ford dealers Browne and Day are celebrating 70 years in business this year and to mark the occasion the company has raised money for a minibus to transfer cancer patients from the north west to Belfast City Hospital. The Northern Irish Cancer Care charity provides free community transport for cancer patients and family members to help ease the stress of treatment and travelling. They currently have one mini-bus/ ambulance in operation, which is at full capacity. They at times rely on volunteers to use their own vehicles to shuttle patients to and from the relevant hospitals. In association with Northern Irish Cancer Care, Browne and Day want to fundraise to supply the charity with a second mini-bus/Ambulance. As fundraising takes time, Browne and Day have already purchased a 15-seater mini bus in advance

so that the charity can continue to provide their essential daily service as well as extending the service to cover both North & South of the border. The original garage was opened in 1947 by Albert Browne who started business as Browne & Day in Claudy where he employed only 2 people. With building materials so scarce in the wake of the second world war, Albert enlisted the help of his brother-in-law, Peter Day, who presented him with a permit to obtain the rudiments for building construction, cement, timber, glass, iron etc which he received from the goverment, after fighting in the war. This alliance of convenience was the foundation for the name of the Firm, ‘Browne and Day’. A significant development took place in 1949 when a Ford tractor representative suggested to Albert that he should apply for the

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

franchise to sell Ford cars. Shortly after the conversation, a delegate from Ford Motor Company arrived, the formalities were quickly dispensed with and so began an association with the Ford Company that has cemented the image of both in NI, and has kept the name Browne and Day to the forefront in local motoring for well over half a century. The first car Albert sold was a Ford model Y at a cost of only £100. Now Browne and Day is a thriving

business and they now employ over 20 staff in a new state-of-the-art showroom and workshop facilities which were newly built in 1986. The premises were then revamped in 2006 to cater for the expanding car market and latest technology and the company is now selling over 500 new and used cars every year. GARAGETRADER - 39

Graf launches significant number of popular new Water Pump references

Founded in the early 1920’s in Italy, Graf quickly became well known as a reliable manufacturer of automotive parts. Towards the end of the 1960’s, the company transferred ownership and moved to its present site in Rovato, in the province of Brescia. At this time, Graf’s new management team decided to concentrate the company’s energies on the production and distribution of water pumps and brake discs for the independent spare parts market. Graf is now the leading independent producer of water pumps in Europe. In July 2001, Metelli Co. acquired Graf and it merged with Metelli Spa in 2003. The use of high quality raw materials and stringent controls throughout the production process, as well as post-production reliability tests, ensure that all Graf products come with a genuine guarantee of safety and long life. This ongoing efficiency and reliability is vital to safeguard vehicle engines. Distributed in Ireland by Serfac Limited, the Graf range of water pumps now caters for all the vehicle industries of Europe, USA and Asia. SKF makes it easy to do a complete timing system job, offering more than XXX timing belt kits with 98% coverage of the car parc in Europe. SKF timing

belt and water pump kits make doing a complete repair easy. The kits contain the belt, tensioners, and water pump — all the right parts in one box, with each meeting or exceeding original OE specifications. In cases where the water pump is driven by the timing belt, it is considered best practice to replace the pump when replacing the belt, mainly due to the fact that if the pump fails a few kilometres down the road, most of the labour costs will be incurred by the customer again. When they know the facts, most customers would rather do the complete repair now, rather than risk more costs and a potential breakdown. The Spray Paint Can that is changing the world of painting! Up until a few years ago, little confidence was given to spray paint cans and were deemed to be a DIY tool. The market developed into the direction of providing alternative and cost effective repair methods that lacked the appropriate paint repair systems up until that point this is when the unique SprayMax aerosol technology came onto the market, at the right time. This month Shop Bodyshop Direct are launching SprayMax, the brand new aerosol range to the Irish market.“Being the sole importer and distributor in Ireland, we are super excited to introduce this amazing product to bodyshops and garages nationwide. Earlier this year, the sales team flew over to Germany, where SprayMax is manufactured, for training on this top-quality product! Our sales team were fascinated with the easy application and speed associated with the brand as well as the ease of use.” Said Anthony Fitzgerald, Sales Manager at Shop Bodyshop Direct. Already being successful in the automotive paint repair industry, this ground-breaking technology steadily worked its way to taking the upper hand over other paint

applications. The original aim of SprayMax was to achieve painting results to match those of a spray paint gun, being equivalent to an OEM finish. The technology behind SprayMax is a combination of a propellant formula, innovative spray head and valve technology. This technology makes wide jet spray just like a spray gun, but with less overspray. SprayMax itself is a professional 1K and 2K paint system with benefits in the field of spot repairs and maintenance. Quality is guaranteed to be comparable with the original finish of OEM’s. SprayMax is used in all market segments of the paint industry – Example; End of line repair OE, rapid repair industry and several other areas of industry. The 2K Technology associated with SprayMax ensures the high product quality and quality of results along the lines of OEM painting with a spray paint gun. 2K or 2-component technology means 2-component paint and hardener in one spray can. The hardener is integrated into a separate container inside the main can. The hardener is then activated into the main can by the press of a button. The hardener is released and mixed with

the paint materials. “When we saw how the hardener was activated and released into the aerosol itself, we honestly were amazed! There has never been anything like SprayMax on the market before. It is making the spot repair process 10 times easier than before in terms of saving time, energy and materials.” Said Jonathan Penny, MD of Shop Bodyshop Direct. Each nozzle on the SprayMax aerosols are variably adjustable in terms of spray direction and size. The direction and size can be easily adjusted to suit the size of the repair. The nozzle can be used vertically or horizontally and is freely adjustable from a maximum to minimum spray pattern size. The pattern size can also be influenced by the distance of the spray. Uniqueness of SprayMax: • •

Refinish

New Standox daylight lamp detects metamerism Standolux iQ is the first daylight lamp from Standox. It can make metamerism visible thanks to its special LED lights. Different brightness levels also allow refinishers to adjust the light to specific colours to avoid glare that can occur off a bright solid or effect shade. When choosing the right colour for repairing paint damage, the ambient light plays a crucial role. Usually the workshop lighting is not sufficient on its own for reliable colour identification. With Standolux iQ, the first daylight lamp from Standox, bodyshops now have a solution to help avoid errors early on in the refinish process, particularly when selecting colour formulas. Standolux iQ can not only reproduce bright natural daylight but also, thanks to a second integrated light source, it can recreate the lower level light around

sunset by the simple push of a button. This option is an advantage because the lower intensity LED setting allows for optimal viewing of metamerism.

“Sometimes two colours can look identical in normal workshop light, but they can differ from each other quite considerably in midday or in early evening light,” says Kevin Welling, Training Academy Manager for Axalta Coating Systems in the UK and Ireland. “This effect is called metamerism and is not often visible until the finished car is driven away from the workshop. With Standolux iQ, we can avoid this happening before the job is even started.” The brightness of Standolux iQ can be set to three different levels

and so adapts to different colour shades exceptionally well. This is particularly useful with lighter colours as a strong, bright light can cause a reflected glare that can potentially lead to the wrong colour match.

Federal-Mogul Motorparts has relaunched its Champion filter range. With over 1300 item references covering 90 percent of the vehicle parc, the range includes air, oil, cabin and fuel filters, all manufactured to OE quality levels. “The trusted Champion brand brings a range of excellent quality filters to the market, with high coverage that includes all the most popular applications,” explained Diana Carolina Ortiz, Product Manager, Filters, EMEA, Federal-Mogul Motorparts. “It complements our other Champion products, such as wipers and ignition parts, that make up our wide portfolio of service items.” Federal-Mogul Motorparts has used its close relationship with many of the world’s leading car manufacturers to ensure that its aftermarket service items are manufactured to the same standards. Champion products use state-of-the-art technology to provide a number of important performance benefits. Champion oil filters reduce lubricant contamination by over 90 percent and are especially effective for particles below the five-micron threshold, most critical to engine wear. This range offers micro glass media which lasts two to five times longer in service, reduces pressure losses and resists chemical attack better than conventional types.

Its fuel filters use multi-layer, synthetic, melt-blown media to ensure removal of particles as small as three microns while maintaining, or even reducing, the pressure drop across the filter. The layered construction provides greater dirtholding capacity and longer life than non-layered alternatives. Champion cabin filters are available in a wide range for carbon as well as particle filtration media, and eliminate 98 percent of airborne pollutants. Their flexible frame mounting enables easy installation, and comprehensive packaging information even includes instructions for filter location and replacement. For maximum engine protection and performance, as with the entire Champion range, air filters are designed to match OE standards, removing 98 percent of all potentially damaging contaminants from the inlet air stream. They are available in panel, round and cylindrical forms and use flameretardant construction where OE specified. Further details on Champion’s entire filter range, wipers and ignition products can be found by browsing the easy-to-navigate new website, http://www. championautoparts.co.uk.The site includes technical support such as installation guidelines, which can be downloaded for easy reference.

FG7

TOTAL QUALITY AT FG7 When wholesale motor factors FG7 moved to their new premises just outside Cookstown, it marked a major investment and expansion for the company. This has been well justified with the company now supplying 23 different motor factors across Ireland, with branches from Coleraine to Cork. FG7 gives its members unrivalled buying power, the leverage of having rapid access to a massive range of products, backed up with world class IT systems controlled and dispatched by some of the most efficient and effective logistics support service to be found anywhere. David Millar had worked with FG7 on a freelance basis 3 years ago. He took over the day to day running of the FG7 operation in December 2016. FG7 employees moved tons of stock from the Sandholes Road, Cookstown warehouse to their new warehouse at Coagh and still received more orders arriving daily which was hard to keep track

of all the stock. The stock is now fully located and when new parts are delivered to the warehouse they are located and available to all members within 24hours. The replacement stock arrives daily into the warehouse. Orders are picked immediately and boxed for FG7 members and are delivered with the next van delivery. Members in Sligo, Galway and Cork get their stock orders the next day. There are 5 directors at FG7 who have all worked in the motor factors business all their lives. David’s background is completely different, but ideally suited to the managerial and logistical needs of a massive operation like FG7 with its £2.5 million worth of stock. Cookstown born and bred, David’s back ground is in Mechanical Engineering and he joined the Blue Circle Cement Works which was located just outside the Tyrone town after graduating. David worked at the Cookstown Plant for

11 years before moving to Blue Circle in Nigeria for seven years as Chief Mechanical Engineer. On his return to the UK he moved to Masons Works near Ipswich for another four years before returning to Cookstown Works as Plant Manager in 1991. After a couple of years he was appointed the Blue Circle Commercial Manager for all of Ireland. When Blue Circle was taken over by French company Lafarge Cement he moved to the position of Sales Director for the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man and Oslo, looking after 10 million tons of cement sales per annum. He spent a lot of time flying between Ireland, the UK, Paris and Oslo especially when Lafarge was acquiring other companies. David has always enjoyed the challenges of business and enjoyed his work. He had been fortunate to have always enjoyed good health and was only off sick a handful of days in 38 years with

the cement companies. However all that changed nine years ago when David, then aged 54, went for his annual medical. “I had managed to avoid my medicals for a few years but I went for a medical and thought nothing more about it. Three days later I got a phone call from the Doctors telling me that there was a problem with my blood tests. At first they thought it could have been a virus I picked up during my time in Nigeria so I was sent to see a specialist at the Ulster Independent Clinic. I went to the specialist who said that I had prostate cancer and that it was at a very advanced stage and may not be treatable. “I had spent 38 years with the company enjoying my work and at the time nothing else mattered but family and work. Suddenly work didn’t really matter anymore. It is testimony to the Doctors, his Oncologist Dr Joe O’Sullivan and prayer that David came through

FG7 GT the two years of prostate cancer treatment and he still goes for regular tests. Since then, David has done some consultantcy work for a few companies in the Mid Ulster area in the past few years. The owners of these companies were friends of Davids. At the same time, Tom Patrick and the other four Directors of FG7 knew they needed someone with the skill and experience of running a nationwide multi million pound company to take over the day to day running and David was asked to fill the role of Operations Manager. “On the day I was offered the job I took a walk round the FG7 premises. Orders were sitting on pallets and there didn’t seem to be a proper system in operation. The biggest asset in any business is the people working for them. When I

took over the running of FG7 I met everyone individually to make sure they were on board and shared my vision of ‘Total Quality’. Total Quality in everything you do, from when you get up in the morning until you go to bed. Total quality in your staff and your products. We have progressed from being 20 days behind processing stock to being one day behind. Everything is barcoded and the stock control is strictly monitored. “We have also taken on new staff – there are now 30 employees here. I believe in giving young people a chance and we have taken on some new recruits who are doing really well. The company is expanding with outlets right down as far as Tadgh Hawes Motor Parts in Togher and Middleton as well as Car Parts Warehouse in Galway. We’re looking for more outlets particularly in the Dublin area and we may eventually open our own office in Dublin. “We are taking on new members at a steady rate, factors come to us now asking to join. We have been approached by companies in Dundalk and Monaghan and the euro exchange rate is really helping the south. We have also been signing up

new suppliers and have just taken on the Japan Parts range. As we have grown some of our suppliers have had to make major changes to ensure they can fully supply support FG7 as it expands. We need suppliers who are our partners that can guarantee they won’t let us down so we are more effective, efficient and more professional in our business allowing us to expand. “There are also geographical differences in the products ordered in different areas. One area might want our top of the range products whereas other areas sell much more budget range products. We can supply for all our members requirements. “To gain membership of FG7 you have to be totally committed to us, FG7 has to be your first port of call and you must be honourable in all your dealings with us and the suppliers. We are here to help motor factors and just recently we had 30 people here from different motor factors for training on the MAM Autopart software system that we use. “The opportunities ahead for FG7 are fantastic. It is a professional business and organisation. The fundamentals of managing any business are the same – change and be prepared to change. You will falter if you don’t see the problems ahead. That’s why you need Total Quality and commitment from everyone. You will get it from everyone at FG7.” GARAGETRADER - 51

I.A.E.A. Windscreen Awareness Course On Thursday 2nd of March, Riverpark Training hosted a windscreen awareness event run by Autoglass. The event was organised by the Institute of Automotive Engineer Assessors and was the first of these events to be run for Northern Ireland based assessors for some years. It was particularly interesting on the evening to learn how complex the replacement of front glass is when it incorporates LIDAR technology, this is a specific technical area that Autoglass have invested in as they see they need to meet the changing demand of the industry.

Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Challenge 2017 On the 22nd -23rd February 2017 Riverpark Training held the 2017 body and paint Northern Ireland apprentice competition. It’s sad to see how many decent businesses simply couldn’t afford to stay open, and disappeared. What was the best piece of advice you ever received? It’s better to be looking at something, than looking for it. Whom do you most admire? I admire people who have a genuine passion for something and don’t try and hide it. People like Sir David Attenborough impress me. What is the most difficult aspect of your job? Keeping up with changes in the trade. Every morning you seem to wake up to a new procedure or directive What is your most effective or personal asset? I’m very laid back. There are things to get upset about in life, but for me, work is not one of them. You’ve won the lottery. What car would you rush out and buy? I’d probably buy a van for practicality. The added extra mod cons would cost more than the van though. How do you relax? I either go fishing, spend time with my family or watch sport (cricket in particular)
