E

mployees from Donnelly Group have participated in their first fundraising event since announcing their chosen charity partner to be Macmillan Cancer Support. The Charity provides a range of support and care options to people living with cancer in Northern Ireland. A total of 38 Donnelly Group employees volunteered to take part in the annual dragon boat race on the River Lagan which kick starts their year of fundraising for the cancer charity. Roisin Donnelly, from the Donnelly Group said: “For over 70 years the Donnelly Group has supported our local community and through our newly launched Donnelly Foundation we are delighted to support such an incredible charity, and one that is very close to our hearts. “This Dragon Boat Race was our first planned activity to support

Macmillan and we were completely overwhelmed by the number of employees who volunteered to paddle their hardest to raise funds for this amazing cause.

“Macmillan receives no government funding and relies on voluntary donations, so we’re proud to have raised £3,725 with money still being donated. We look forward to adding significantly to this total through many more events we already have planned over the next year.” This year 8 teams competed in the event, which seen local teams of all ages and abilities racing against each other to win trophies and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Roisin continued: “It was a great effort by everyone

from Donnelly Group who took part, especially as we’d never paddled together as a team before the day. “We all had a fantastic time and we’re really proud we’ve helped raise money for such a great cause in the process. We’ll definitely be back next year!”

Continental

50 Years of Continental Anti-lock Brake System function, brake booster, hydraulic control and anti-lock brake system into one compact unit. A traction control system (TCS) was also integrated shortly afterward.

T

he mood at the IAA in Frankfurt am Main in the fall of 1969 was excellent. The automobile industry was booming at the time. The technology company Continental also presented a world premiere: Back then, ITT-Teves was presenting the MK I, the first anti-lock brake system (ABS). The idea of preventing the wheels from locking when a car was braking hard so that the car could continue to be steered had already occurred to vehicle designers in the 1920s. But a solution to the problem only emerged with the development of powerful electronics. Starting in 1965, engineers at Teves (later ITTTeves) – the company became part of Continental in 1998 – worked on an anti-lock brake system for passenger cars. Starting in the 1970s, integrated circuits based on analog circuit technology were used to regulate brake pressure and in this way prevent the wheels from locking. The system was presented at the IAA 50 years ago in 1969.

6- garageTRADER

Series production was a long time coming, but then there was a technological breakthrough However, the technology was initially only used in 36 test vehicles for the Swedish police. The oil crisis and the subsequent weakening of the economy, which hit the automotive market particularly hard, prevented series production for years. This finally started in 1984, as a technological breakthrough: unlike competing systems that were already on the market, Teves, now part of Continental, launched the MK II, the world’s first microprocessor-controlled ABS for passenger cars on the road. In North America it was available for the Lincoln Continental, while in Europe this safety technology became a standard feature of the Ford Scorpio. Its installation in the factory was another novelty, since at that time ABS was usually only available as an optional feature for a significant surcharge.

Helmut Fennel, who at the time held a key function in promoting the use of microprocessors for ABS, explains the decisive advantage of the technology as follows: “Due to its programmability, our system could be quickly and optimally validated both for braking manoeuvers on rough roads, that is,

An ABS today is equipped with up to 50 functions and all that in just two kilograms and taking up the same amount of space as a single-lens reflex camera (SLR). with a high coefficient of friction, and for those on slippery roads, such as on ice in winter. It was also considerably more flexible than other solutions and could therefore be quickly adapted to different vehicle concepts, such as models with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The microprocessor solution gave us a head start of several years.” The MK II was the first ABS on the market to combine the brake

An important milestone in the development of ABS was the later MK IV system, which went into series production in 1989 and for the first time also included an electronic brake force distribution system, making mechanicalhydraulic components superfluous. Continental’s developers took another developmental leap forward in 1995, when an electronic stability control (ESC) was integrated into the MK 20 system for the first time and furthermore a groundbreaking design was developed. In this new arrangement, which has become the worldwide standard, the engine is located at the top, the valve block in the middle and the electronics below, more or less as the base. Continental anti-lock brake systems are still based on this principle, with the modularity of the equipment variants (ABS, ABS + TCS, ESC) optimally meeting customer requirements. An ABS today is equipped with up to 50 additional and safety functions, such as the automatic release of the parking brake when starting off, hill start assist or as an important component of adaptive cruise control systems. And all that in just two kilograms and taking up the same amount of space as a single-lens reflex camera (SLR). The first production-ready ABS from Continental was the size of a 5-liter gas can and weighed 11.5 kilograms. ABS – for both passenger cars and motorcycles – therefore makes a significant contribution to the long-term goal of Vision Zero, a future without road traffic crashes. In order to come ever closer to this goal, even after 50 years of ABS Continental is still pressing ahead with the development of this safety system.

TPS

TPS launches Genuine Causes fund to help deserving drivers

T

PS is launching its ‘Genuine Causes’ fund, a new scheme set up to help carry out essential repairs on vehicles required as a lifeline for individual, community and charitable causes. The initiative will offer individuals, community projects and charitable organisations the opportunity to apply to local independent garages, which have a TPS account, for help with repairs needed to keep their vehicles on the road. The garage will provide the labour free of charge and TPS will provide the genuine parts, in a partnership aimed at helping those most in need. The ‘Genuine Causes’ fund is designed to provide a lifeline to individuals and communities facing challenging circumstances in today’s modern world. It could be the school which can’t afford to repair the minibus, the car driver whose Polo has seen better days or the hard-up single parent who needs their vehicle to help juggle the 10- garageTRADER

responsibilities of looking after an aging relative and the school run. Launched in September, the Genuine Causes fund is part of TPS’s new Genuine Heroes campaign which puts mechanics at the heart of the campaign based on the heroics they carry out every day to keep their customers vehicles on the road. Genuine Causes is a way to bring this to life by helping those in need to become real heroes. Listening to their customers’ stories, the garage can help them by referring them to the Genuine Causes fund. They can do this in Northern Ireland by applying to either the TPS Belfast or TPS Northern Ireland centres for two different types of parts award. The TPS Manager Award, enables the garage, as a customer of TPS, to apply to their local TPS centre for a parts award up to the value of £150 towards Genuine Parts. All the centres across the UK will

have six awards to be given over a three-month period on a first-comefirst served basis to customers that meet the minimum qualifying criteria. The second-tier award is the Regional Award and will allow garages to apply for a select number of awards to the value of £1,000. These will be awards for larger scale repairs and the most deserving of causes. Both awards will be assessed on customer’s meeting the minimum criteria required for assistance. In the event of more entries than awards being available, a panel of judges including an independent judge will choose the successful entries based on the merits of their submission. Leanne Thomas, TPS National Operations Manager, said: “We strive to be a genuinely better network, and we believe we all have a part to play. By listening to our customers and each other, we recognise that we can be better collectively and can make anything

happen. “The Genuine Causes scheme goes further than ‘just’ free parts. It’s about reaching out to the hearts and minds of our wider network, to harness the goodwill of our customers and the ‘free labour behaviour’ that already exists. “We are working in partnership with our customers to enable them to be heroes to their customers who are most in need by keeping them on the road, and their lives mobile.” The Genuine Causes scheme will run from the end of September for three months, taking it into the festive period. At a time traditionally when money is tight and sudden costly vehicles repair bills can threaten to spoil Christmas, the Genuine Cause fund will provide some festive cheer for those most in need. Willis Insurance

Protecting your van from theft

R

ecent research revealed that the Sprinter was one of the most commonly stolen light commercial vehicles (LCVs) this past year. What’s more, nearly 90 per cent of stolen LCVs were taken without the owners’ keys. Indeed, keyless van thefts have become a serious epidemic in the transport industry. By removing the ignition from the vehicle and using a laptop computer to extract the last used code from the ignition, thieves are then able to program a new key to the vehicle and drive away using their own ignition barrel. Don’t let your fleet suffer in the hands of the keyless van theft crisis.

Consider the following industry expert guidance to keep your LCVs secure and deter potential thieves: • Use an ignition shield—An ignition shield is a strong metal piece that bolts around a vehicle’s ignition through existing bolt holes behind the dashboard. Adding this form of protection to your fleet will make it increasingly difficult for thieves to remove the ignition and program a new key to any vehicle.

to drive away. You can use a pedal box, which encases the accelerator, brake and clutch pedals to prevent vehicles from being moved when the box is locked in place. In addition, you can install digital immobilisers to your fleet that require drivers to input a short code or sequence to unlock and operate the steering wheel. This way, thieves still won’t be able to steal your vehicles, even if they gain access to the ignition.

• Implement immobilisers— There are a variety of different immobilisers that you can add to your fleet to limit thieves’ ability

• Add extra locks and alarms— You can deter thieves from even attempting to steal your vehicles by adding deadlocks to the doors

• Install a tracking device— Lastly, you can increase your chance of recovering any stolen vehicles from your fleet by installing tracking devices. With these devices in place, you will be able to detect the whereabouts of missing vehicles and limit fleet replacement costs. More than anything, you need to protect your fleet with proper cover. obituary

John Mulholland R

andalstown car dealer John Mulholland passed away on Saturday 17th August after a year long battle with cancer of the kidney. He was 55. Originally from the Antrim Road in north Belfast, the father-of-four moved to Randalstown during the Troubles and set up the company with his wife, Alicia, selling cars from the side of their house. He went on to open award winning multi-franchise dealerships in Randalstown and Campsie. John also collected a number of exworks rally cars including a Rothmans Porsche 911, Skoda Octavia WRC and a Subaru Impreza WRC. ‘John Mulholland Motors’ was named as the top family-run business in Ireland at major awards ceremony in Wembley Stadium in London two years ago and currently employs more than 80 staff. His company also won Skoda Dealer of the Year on three occasions. As well as Skoda, John Mulholland Motors are also Ford and Hyundai dealers. While Mr Mulholland had been hospitalised for most of the past four months, his death was sudden. He had also suffered the death of his mother Una in June, while his London-based consultant he was seeing for specialist treatment had also died suddenly due to complications from a malaria vaccine. Since his diagnosis last year, John had spoken openly about his illness and undertook a major fundraiser through his company with a plan to donate £40,000 by the end of 2019 to the Friends of the Cancer Centre charity, singling out the “vital” work of its nurses - in particular his specialist nurse, ‘Melanie’. Mr Mulholland’s daughter, Shona (28), said she remembered her father as “charismatic, energetic and driven man” who was also “very funny and gave her the best childhood you could imagine”. “Anything dad approached in life,

he never expected to be defeated and genuinely we never expected this, we always thought he would get better,” she said. “We have been inundated with calls and texts from the nurses and doctors who cared for him - they all said they had never seen such a fighter. “For us, he was one in a trillion Dad. He was our hero. He lived his life to the max and fitted more in his 55 years than most people could fit in 555.

felt like we had their arms around us the whole time and they fully understand Dad’s wish to come home and moved mountains for him to be able to do that.”

“But he also taught us to always support those who support you which is why he got involved with Friends of the Cancer Centre after his first appointment with them.

Ms Mulholland added that the family will be continuing her father’s fundraising work for the charity and will “well exceed” the target

We cannot thank them enough for the dignity and care they provided dad and us towards the end. We

“Designed to deliver something different, I believe MECTEC will be set apart by the diversity it offers and the quality of its execution. This is not simply a chance for suppliers to showcase our wares to the trade in the traditional fashion, it is a platform for us to collectively bring the aftermarket to life through engagement, awareness and education. FG7 was clear in its MECTEC mission and challenged its aftermarket partners to think outside of the box to deliver a standout event - I firmly believe the Comline showcase will rise to this challenge and be well received by MECTEC’s many visitors. “By focusing on education, MECTEC also aims to feed knowledge to the shop floor. Through a variety of technical seminars, MECTEC will provide

invaluable insight and technical knowhow for Motor Factors and Technicians alike. “So that is the show but what can visitors expect from Comline when doors open on October 8th to 10th? I don’t want to give too much away at this point but rest assured we have fully understood the brief. Our presence will be typically eye-catching but, crucially, there will be plenty of opportunity to see, hear and engage with the Comline

BRAKING NEWS

A

llied Nippon’s Director of Braking Dr. Keith Ellis has been confirmed as a headline speaker at upcoming MECTEC 2019. Garage Trader gets ahead of the curve interviewing the man of the moment to discover more about the person behind the brand. What is your current role and area of responsibility? I am responsible for all friction sales of Allied Nippon Limited in Europe.

What do you see as your biggest challenge right now? The European Aftermarket in which we operate is highly congested, and we need to offer something special to stand out as the supplier of choice. We do this through a combination of quality products, competitive price and, most importantly of all, high levels of

customer service. What is your favourite thing about working in the brake industry? I enjoy the technical challenges and the “cut and thrust” of the aftermarket which is fluid and everchanging. Just when you think you have got to grips with the market the landscape changes and you need to move quickly to respond. Technical challenges, which present themselves daily, are something which my team and I particularly thrive upon. Not only do they keep the job ‘interesting’ they provide opportunities for the brand to shine, showcasing our skills, expertise and speed in finding suitable solutions. Another aspect of the job which I enjoy involves education and to this end I am delighted to have been invited to speak at MECTEC. Despite its safety-critical nature,

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

the brake pad is still a largely underrated and misunderstood product. Part of my job is to change this perception, positioning the brake pad as a critical piece of advanced technology, continually promoting and articulating the scientific nature of the compounds and development processes used.

brand. There will also be the opportunity to win with Comline and walk away from MECTEC with a very attractive prize. Our MECTEC presence promises to be a real ‘whirlwind’ – that’s a deliberate clue about what we have planned for visitor’s but all will be revealed when MECTEC officially opens at 4.00pm on October 8th.” For more information on MECTEC and to register for free tickets, please visit www.mectec2019.com

Dr Keith Ellis

I have been in this business for some time but, while the underlying script remains the same, I still thoroughly enjoy discussing technological advances, new production techniques and friction technology with our many customers. What was your first job in the automotive industry?

My first job in the automotive industry was as R&D Manager for a friction manufacturing company in the UK. Little did I realise at the time that it was a business I was destined to spend the next 30 years working in. What is the best career advice you have been given? “Never say never” and “Never burn bridges”. Both sound advice which has taught me patience and humility in developing business over the years. garageTRADER - 17

Oil change? No problem! MEYLE can show you how!

A

utomatic transmissions? They don’t need an oil change!’

Though debunked long ago, this rumour has proven to be quite persistent. Transmission oil undergoes a natural ageing process, with the oil wearing out and additives diminishing over time. So it’s all the more important to change the oil: this prevents damage to the transmission and maintains transmission function and driving comfort. Based in Hamburg, spare parts manufacturer Meyle offers over 60 oil change kits, which come with all the components required for an oil change: filter, seals, screws, drain/intake plugs, magnets and the amount of transmission oil the application calls for. This reduces stress and saves money – for workshops and drivers alike.Among other things, Meyle offers an oil change kit for the Mercedes 7G-TRONIC and 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmissions. It contains the special CombiMedia® and SmartMedia™ Triple hydraulic filter, which complies with code A89 (reduced friction) as specified by Mercedes. Tailored to the latest individual vehicle applications, the multilayer construction ensures optimal filter performance: various filter media ensure that the particles which form in the transmission are captured.

18- garageTRADER

MEYLE shows how to change the transmission oil for automatic transmissions in four steps: NB: Please observe the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. MEYLE-ORIGINAL oil change kit for automatic transmission: Changing the oil in four steps Step 1: Preparation Before you begin, bring the transmission oil to operating temperature, shift the gear to N and turn the ignition key to position 0. Then lift the vehicle with the lifting platform, ensuring it remains level, as this will enable correct filling and oil level measurement. Step 2: Draining the transmission oil For vehicles with start-stop function, first loosen the plug connection of the additional oil pump. Then remove the drain plug and drain the transmission oil. After opening the drain plug, break the overflow pipe and drain additional ATF oil to prevent the oil from gushing when removing the oil sump. Next, for vehicles with start-stop function, remove the additional oil pump of the automatic transmission. Once the transmission oil is fully drained, turn the motor in the direction of motor rotation (2nd person) to access the drain plug of the torque converter. Remove the drain plug of the torque converter and drain the

remaining ATF oil. Then tighten the M8 drain plug to 10 Nm torque. Step 3: Replacing the hydraulic filter First, remove the oil sump. Be careful: the oil sump contains a residual amount of ATF oil. Then remove the hydraulic filter and clean the oil sump. Once the oil sump has been cleaned, install the new magnets and overflow pipe as well as the oil sump seal. Now it’s time to insert the new, frictionreduced SmartMedia™ highperformance hydraulic filter from the MEYLE-ORIGINAL oil change kit. Once the filter is in place, resecure the oil sump. Set the torque wrench to 4 Nm and tighten the oil sump screws crosswise. Then tighten all the oil sump screws crosswise with a 180-degree rotation angle. According to guidelines, oil sump screws may only be used once. Screws which have been used once may not be used again. Before reattaching the additional oil pump, the seal connections on the suction and discharge sides should be checked for any damage and, if necessary, replaced. Then insert the additional oil pump, tighten to 8 Nm and reattach the plug connection of the additional oil pump. Step 4: Refilling the transmission oil In the final step, the automatic transmission is refilled with

transmission oil. Fill the filling device with 8 litres of new ATF transmission oil and attach the special adapter for filling the transmission. Now fill with 6 litres of transmission oil. Then start the engine in P and connect the diagnostic unit to determine the transmission oil temperature. - Filling step 1: Once the transmission oil has reached a temperature of 45 degrees (testing temperature for vehicles without additional transmission oil cooler), add the remaining ATF oil with the engine running. If a constant stream of oil flows back at the specified oil temperature, the temporary filling level has been achieved. Now remove the filling adapter and shift to gears P, R, N and D for 6 seconds each time with the brakes applied and then shift back to gear P. - Filling step 2: Now check the transmission oil level again as described in step 1, maintaining a transmission oil temperature of 45 degrees (testing temperature for vehicles without additional transmission oil cooler). You may need to turn off and restart the engine to reach the correct testing temperature. Now close the system at the filling opening (oil sump) using a new drain plug and seal and tighten to a torque of 22 Nm.

How can I recognise quality aftermarket springs?

Miniblock Springs More Technology, More Performance ! Original Equipment Technology : • Taper wire design • Progressive spring rate • Compact dimensions • Super smooth ride • Safe handling under all load conditions

Side Load Springs A Perfect Fit Every Time ! Overview : • Original Equipment technology • Curved shape • Improved shock absorber response for more ride comfort

T

he coil spring plays a major part in influencing the ride and handling and braking performance of a modern car. Coil springs are safety critical components, so firstly, it is important that the replacement coil spring matches exactly the technical requirements specified by the vehicle manufacturer and, secondly, it is crucial that the mechanic can identify the correct aftermarket part for the vehicle under repair. The simplest way for the mechanic to check the quality of an aftermarket replacement spring is to compare it directly with the Original Spring on the vehicle. An Original Equipment spring is generally quite easy to identify because it will usually carry a colour code or letter code and although the aftermarket

replacement spring may not carry any code, the spring shape and geometry should be the same. Many vehicle manufacturers employ coil springs manufactured from tapered wire, usually because this as an effective means to combine progressive spring rate with low noise and efficient packaging on the vehicle. SUPLEX offer this OE technology to the aftermarket as all coil springs are manufactured to the Original Equipment design.

This stateof-the-art laboratory is equipped with the latest ProMetric CCD light imaging photometer. Where a traditional goniophotometer can only measure the light intensity and colour from the lamp at one point at a time, the new ProMetric photometer can measure an astounding 8 MILLION points simultaneously. Our laboratories carry out stringent quality control procedures on a continuous basis. We’ve achieved the highest standards in Quality Assurance and have been independently assessed by BSI, and been awarded ISO:9001 for the manufacture and assembly of automotive lighting

R

All our bulbs are manufactured and correctly labelled to meet ECE Regulation 37 (commonly known as E marking), and during our testing, we’ve identified many supposedly approved bulbs from well-known brands as being counterfeit, and therefore NOT meeting these safety standards. These are simply poor copies of genuine bulbs which are illegal and potentially unsafe.

MAHLE unveils ADAS solution for calibrating driver assistance systems

• Automatic software updates make this multi-brand tool a sustainable solution • Calibrate driver assistance systems (ADAS) quickly and easily at low cost • Digital calibration panel for all vehicle models

M

AHLE Aftermarket UK has unveiled the TechPRO ADAS solution, which allows workshops to adjust and calibrate driver assistance systems quickly and easily – using just a digital calibration panel. This saves technicians valuable time and money and the tool is continuously updated online and expanded to cover more vehicles. With this intuitive and sustainable solution, MAHLE is setting new benchmarks in this developing product group. With TechPRO ADAS, MAHLE Aftermarket has aligned itself with the needs of tomorrow’s workshops today. The multi-brand tool provides workshops with a solution that keeps up with the latest state of the art thanks to continuous software updates. The professional adjustment of driver assistance system sensors and cameras allows workshops to capture additional sales potential.

40- garageTRADER

Driver assistance systems change the way workshops work Whether they use radars, cameras, or ultrasonic sensors, more and more late-model cars have high-tech driver assistance systems, known as ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

are installed automatically to give workshops a solution that is optimally adapted to handle new developments in the field of driver assistance systems.”

“In upcoming years, both the number of driver assistance systems and the percentage of passenger cars and trucks equipped with these systems are expected to grow significantly. This will greatly change the way that workshops work,” says Olaf Henning, Corporate Executive Vice President MAHLE Group and General Manager Aftermarket.

Multi-brand workshops have always faced challenges with the calibration of different manufacturer’s systems because the sensors vary depending on the vehicle model. In the past, this led to high investment and operating costs, as it required a number of different calibration panels, suitable working areas, and long calibration times.

Digital calibration panel for fast, precise work

This is where TechPRO ADAS from MAHLE comes in. It supports workshop professionals with a system that uses just one digital calibration panel, thereby reducing calibration time and keeping space requirements to a minimum. This in turn lowers the cost of acquisition and ongoing operations.

For service and repair work, workshops must re-adjust radar sensors and camera systems to ensure that assistance systems continue to function reliably. They need to be precisely calibrated to the geometric axis of the vehicle. Even minimal deviations can cause a failure of the assistance system. “With our TechPRO ADAS, we make this job easier for workshops,” says Henning. “Unlike the tools already on the market, only one digital calibration panel is needed to precisely adjust the radar sensors and cameras. Updates

TechPRO ADAS reduces investment and operating costs

Calibration panel adapts automatically Developers at MAHLE Aftermarket have redefined the entire process, identifying innovative technical and process-related solutions. TechPRO ADAS interacts with the digital calibration panel to produce precise results quickly.

To recalibrate an assistance system, the workshop technician just connects the TechPRO diagnostic tool to the appropriate control units using the onboard diagnostics. The calibration panel is set up according to the manufacturer’s directions and adjusted automatically. Next, the TechPRO diagnostic tool shows what exactly needs to be done and guides the workshop technician through each of the steps. Solution for future models and systems The system is continuously updated and can be used for vehicles that have one or more driver assistance systems retrofitted over time. Workshops can also use TechPRO ADAS for new assistance systems, without needing to buy additional, vehicle-specific calibration panels. The ADAS tool is a supplemental solution for the TechPRO vehicle diagnostics system or Connex BT from MAHLE Aftermarket. The calibration system covers many European makes that are equipped with driver assistance systems, and market coverage is being continuously expanded. Workshops can rely on TechPRO ADAS to keep up with new vehicle models and all the technical developments in the field of assistance systems.

Dribbles causing you embarrassment?

W

e all know there is nothing more embarrassing than small leaks and dribbles, especially if over time they cause you bigger problems. Leaking hoses on both cars and commercial vehicles after a repair is a surprisingly common issue, however most of the time these can be easily overcome by using the right product correctly.

Being driven by price, vehicle manufacturers often fit components which are only suitable for single use or just reach the minimum operating requirement, hose clamps are just such a case. As such when it comes to repairing a vehicle it can be better to use an alternative product made to a higher standard which is easier to fit and less likely to cause you and your customer issues. The worm drive hose clip, commonly known as the Terry or Jubilee clip, is a tried and tested design used extensively in the automotive and commercial aftermarket. Their large adjustment

50- garageTRADER

range, high sealing ability and ease of use makes them suitable for pretty much all hose sealing applications on vehicles. However, it is important to ensure you fit quality hose clamps and use them correctly.

The most common misuse of a hose clip is using one too large for the application, Some suppliers have a continuous thread on clip band however as the housing for the screw should be radiused for size of hose this can cause leak issues. The image below shows how this can be a problem. Using a clip with a fixed adjustment range such as the JCS Hi-Grip range ensures this cannot happen. A popular misconception of hose clips is the best clamp is the one you can do up the tightest, although often true this does not consider how well that clamp converts the turning force from the installer into an actual clamping force on the hose. Cheap clamps can be extremely inefficient and although feel strong cause you problems

later on. The best way to ensure your clamps are up to the job are buy those built to an international standard, especially the British standard as this has the highest operating requirements of all. The quickest way to check this is look for the BSI kitemark on the clip and packaging.

If upgrading a hose set to silicon hoses Nut and Bolt clamps are often used as an alternative, although they look heavy duty appearances are deceptive as their performance is normally far below that of a quality worm drive clip. Most silicon hose kit suppliers including Samco and Roose Motorsport specify JCS clips for use with their hose kits. Most hose sealing issues are easily fixed or prevented by using a high-quality clip properly. For any workshop to be a success it needs to have a good reputation, don’t risk

putting that reputation on the line for something as cheap and simple as a hose clip. If you are looking for a new supplier, you can’t go far wrong using the JCS Hi-Grip range. JCS are the UKs largest manufacturer of hose clips and all products are designed, built and tested at their factory in Suffolk to exceed the relevant British Standards. If you would like to find out more, please see www.jcshi-torque.co.uk or visit them at the upcoming Mec Tec show. The full JCS range is available from your local FG7 member.

BODYWORX NI

Major alloy wheel refurbishment investment

by Bodyworx NI

R

efinish and accident repair centre Bodyworx NI has invested in new state of the art alloy wheel refurbishment technology. Based near Magheralin, just 5 minutes from J9 of the M1 motorway, Bodyworx is owned by Greer Gardiner. The Gardiner name is well established in the motor trade as Greer’s father Frank was a long established Mazda, Kia and Proton dealer working in the sector for 50 years. Greer himself, who has almost 30 years experience in the refinish trade, worked in his fathers Bodyshop and when his father decided to retire from being a full time car dealer, Greer took over the bodywork side of the business himself twenty years ago and launched Bodyworx NI. A full accident repair centre and refinish service is also available from the company.

Bodyworx has just invested in a Rader Lite X12, the first of its kind to be installed anywhere in Ireland. The alloy wheel repair business is open to everyone who needs a set of wheels refurbished and Bodyworx offers a collection and delivery service as well. The wheels are returned in as new perfect factory condition and Bodyworx can also repair Diamond Cut alloys and leave them like new. There are 5 stages to the Rader process: Stage 1 - Assess Damage Upon arrival, and if fitted, tyres, weights and valves are carefully removed. Tyres and wheels are individually quality assessed for damage.

Stage 2 - Surface Preparation Old coatings and any white rust or oxidisation is chemically removed. Hot chemical cleaning, drying, alloy dressing and meticulous

surface preparation is conducted, prior to a final visual quality inspection. Stage 3 - Priming

BODYWORX NI Process de-gassing and pre-heating is conducted. Powder coating primer is then applied to ensure excellent physical and visual properties. After primer application, all wheels are conveyed through a bespoke high temperature curing oven, at a fixed time and temperature. Stage 4 - Base Coat & Lacquer All wheels are manually quality checked prior to further application of an OE approved range of environmentally friendly water-based colours. After wet colour application, original equipment quality powder coating alloy wheel acrylic is applied.

Stage 5 - Quality Control The fully coated wheel is cured within a specially designed curing oven, ensuring that excellent

flow and glass-like clarity are achieved, mirroring where possible the original finish quality. After remanufacture is completed, and quality control visual inspection

CRASH SERVICES GT

CRASH award Scholarships to Bodyshop Apprentices

Tony McKeown, CRASH Services, congratulates Lee Curran on his Bodyshop Apprentice scholarship award with his employer David McIntyre of David McIntyre Autobody and Alloys in Coleraine.

C

RASH Services have chosen the first two recipients for their new Bodyshop Apprentice Scholarship scheme, which are worth £10,000 to each during their three year training course. Lee Curran from Ballycastle and Josh Conlon from Newtownabbey were selected from apprentices who have just started with Riverpark Training and Development in Mallusk and are working in CRASH affiliated repairers. Lee will be completing his apprenticeship at David McIntyre Autobody & Alloys and Josh with Greenisland body repair centre. The Scholarship was launched by CRASH earlier this year to help attract more apprentices into the Northern Ireland carbody repair industry. The scheme will initially run for three years and a total of six apprentices will be selected. Tony McKeown, Sales & Marketing Director at CRASH Services, said “We are delighted to be supporting Lee and Josh as they start their training. It was a really tough decision to choose the winners. They really stood out due their passion and ambition to have a career in car body repairs. We look forward to seeing

their progress. Colin Hagan, Managing Director at Riverpark Training said “It is a compliment to the quality of our training that CRASH has chosen us to source apprentices worthy of a £10,000 scholarship. Congratulations to the two winners – the scholarships will certainly make a difference to their futures! Now, as with all our apprentices, we will help them develop their skills to allow them to be self-sufficient quickly, and become confident in their chosen careers within the crash repair industry.” CRASH is the largest Accident Management Company in Northern Ireland. If you are involved in a road traffic accident, they take care of everything. This includes vehicle recovery, collision investigation, organising repairs, providing a replacement vehicle, liaising with insurance companies, offering legal and medical assistance. There is no charge for their services as all costs are recovered from the insurers involved.

ECOBAT

EBT BRINGS CLARITY AND OPPORTUNITY

Despite ongoing confusion, the UK’s leading battery distributor provides a ray of light!

I

n terms of the aftermarket, batteries have historically been a relatively simple component to replace within a generally uncomplicated electrical system. Although things began to change slightly when a 12-volt power supply had to be provided during battery removal and installation, initially in order to save radio codes and then the information contained in the vehicle’s electronic control units (ECU), the real game changer has been the introduction of start/stop technology. In order to support a start/stop system, which, as its name suggests, requires the battery to make multiple engine starts in the course of a single journey, there had to be a fundamental shift in battery technology. Hence the development of first, AGM (absorbent glass mat) and later, EFB (enhanced flooded battery) designs. Although these developments are now commonplace within the industry, what is clear from research conducted by ECOBAT Battery Technologies (EBT), formerly Manbat, is that there is still confusion in the marketplace as to the process and tools that might be required to change the battery in a start/ stop equipped vehicle, as well as a failure to recognise that it requires a specific battery. This general lack of awareness also extends to the meaning of the acronyms given to the various battery designs used throughout the vehicle parc. First to the start/stop specific research, during which EBT discovered that nationally, 43% of workshops turn away start/ stop battery replacement. This implies they consider fitting them to be complicated and the necessary equipment costly or it is a reaction to the potential negative publicity when something goes wrong, as seen through recent news stories concerning a prominent chain and the subsequent demand for compensation, but either way, many have decided it is a job it’s best to steer clear of. Unwilling to sit back and just accept these somewhat depressing findings, EBT set about addressing the 60- garageTRADER

underlying issues and subsequently launched its ONE BOX solution at Automechanika Birmingham in June. The cost-effective package, which includes all the necessary equipment to enable technicians to correctly fit the AGM and EFB replacements that vehicles equipped with start/stop technology require, also allows workshop to liberate previously untapped revenue with an average estimated value of £185 per installation. The components brought together in the ONE BOX bundle include a battery analyser to accurately assess the condition of the existing battery, a NOCO charger and OBD lead to support the vehicle’s ECU/ data storage during the replacement process and a battery validation tool to ensure the new AGM/EFB battery is correctly assimilated into the vehicle’s battery management system (BMS). This vital element is an important step that is often overlooked and means that even if the battery is of the appropriate technology and correct specification, incorrect validation will result in the wrong charge algorithms being applied to the new battery via the BMS, which will significantly reduce its service life. Two months on from its introduction, EBT has worked with several workshops that, with the benefit of the ONE BOX package and a little training, have allowed their technicians to develop their skills and get the very best from the equipment. This has enabled them to discover that fitting these batteries correctly is not a complicated process and find that it also allows the workshop to project a more professional service to its customers, which naturally helps with its reputation and customer retention.

There is also a significant additional benefit to fitting start/stop replacements, which helps both the workshop and their supplying motor factor, and that is the fact that with each installation they are selling a more expensive battery, with a greater profit margin. On top of this, because they are fitting a battery of the correct specification for the application, rather than a familiar, but ultimately inappropriate SLI version, customer satisfaction increases and warranty claims are reduced accordingly. Returning to its findings, the subject of awareness of the different battery designs and their terminology, was dealt with through research gathered on behalf of EBT at Automechanika Birmingham, where technicians were asked to provide the correct meaning of the acronyms SLI, AGM and EFB.

Remarkably, of the more than 400 technicians questioned during the event, less than 10 percent answered starter lights ignition, absorbent glass mat and enhanced flooded battery for the corresponding SLI, AGM and EFB acronyms, which reinforces the fact that rather than understanding that these batteries are fundamentally different and are designed for differing applications – SLI batteries for traditional applications without a start/stop function, EFB for entrylevel start/stop vehicles and AGM for larger start/stop vehicles that could also feature regenerative braking etc – technicians think they are just letters, without any associated meaning. For further details, please contact ECOBAT Battery Technologies on: 01743 218500 or visit: www.ecobat. tech

TTSGT

TTS on Target for the 2019 TTS100 Apprentice Recruitment T

ransport Training Services has welcomed its first 2019/20 intake of apprentices to its purpose-built training centre at Nutts Corner.

Around 70 apprentices have already been recruited and placed with a range car and commercial vehicle employers across Northern Ireland. Approximately two-thirds of these are light vehicle technician apprentices, with the remainder in heavy vehicle technician, aftersales, body repair and paint, and driving apprenticeship roles. The commercial vehicle driver apprentices start at any time of year. Included in this year’s intake are three female apprentices – two technician apprentices and one in an aftersales advisor apprenticeship. All TTS apprentices will start sometime between the beginning of September and the end of October, depending on the course and employer, but all have attended TTS in early September for induction, course registration and preparation for employment. With the weekly ‘block’ pattern of training that TTS delivers it is possible for apprentices to start at any time of year. Most will start in the autumn but TTS will endeavour to facilitate the needs of employers and young people throughout the year. As well as heavy and light vehicle technician, body repair and paint, parts and service advisor and commercial vehicle/passenger transport driving apprenticeships, TTS is launching a tyre technician apprenticeship, in collaboration with the National Tyre Distributors Association, and a Traffic Office apprenticeship with the Road Haulage Association. Because of the success of this year’s recruitment campaign, technical training provision at TTS has been expanded with the employment of an additional trainer, John Walsh. This brings the total number of TTS trainers to six full time and seven associates. TTS’s 2019/20 apprentice employers are split almost 50:50 between

the main car and truck dealerships and independent companies across Northern Ireland. These employers have recognised the importance of bringing new talent into the motor and transport industries via apprenticeships to support business growth or simply to survive. With businesses all competing for the same diminishing pool of qualified technicians, drivers and aftersales staff in both sectors, well-recruited apprentices offer long term sustainability in the labour market. Martin Hutchinson, CEO of TTS explained, “At TTS we firmly believe the only viable solution to today’s labour market challenges is to bring new blood into the motor and transport sectors via apprenticeships. Industry has a responsibility to secure its own future workforce by training our young people and return on investment studies show that employers reap the benefits quickly”. Growing and developing your own talent can improve how you work, raise your productivity and increase your profits. Verified research by the Institute of the Motor Industry found that apprentices typically generate a return on investment of between 150 and 300% and can generate profit within 18-24 months, often earlier. Figures produced by another study showed that the average apprenticeship improves business productivity by £214 per week, with the apprentice national minimum wage starting at just £3.90. Additionally, growing the workforce

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

Charlotte Hosick (Donnelly Group) and Zhara (Agnew Group) using apprentices reduces long term recruitment and training costs. If none of the above are good enough reasons to recruit an apprentice, giving a young person a good start in life is a socially responsible and rewarding thing to do. We all had to start somewhere! TTS apprentices are vetted through a robust assessment programme to ascertain their suitability and are put through basic skills training, so employers are assured of recruits that are eager to learn, adaptable and well prepared for the workplace. Apprentices and employers both benefit from TTS’s Career Development Officer, Robert Deignan, who is the link between both parties, supporting each with every part of the apprenticeship, from recruitment through to training and qualification. As well as training apprentices to industry standards, TTS can also incorporate brand-specific modules

for employers that require tailored training content and work closely with Peugeot/Citroen, Ford, Toyota/ Lexus, Kia, Hyundai and in the truck sector DAF, Renault, Iveco and Scania. Unlike some other apprenticeship providers, TTS apprentices work for their employer five days per week all year round, with the exception of attendance at TTS approximately one week every two months for training. TTS prefers this ‘block release’ model to a weekly day release, because employers can more easily plan workload around the apprentice being away for training. For apprentices under 25 years old, the cost of the apprenticeship training is fully funded by the Department for the Economy. Employers considering an apprentice are encouraged to contact Robert Deignan at TTS as soon as possible to ensure recruitment is completed in time for the remaining 2019 intake.

SCHAEFFLER

Schaeffler unveils Day in the Life of a Workshop video series

S

chaeffler REPXPERT, Alistair Mason, and Schaeffler Brand Ambassador, Andy Savva, have paid Oldfields Garage a visit to learn more about a typical day in the life of a modern-day workshop, while also lending their expertise and support to a valued brand customer. On a sunny day in Leominster, Herefordshire, Alistair, Andy and Oldfields Director, Tim Benson, discussed a variety of topics, as the REPXPERT and Garage Inspector were treated to a personalised and in-depth tour of the reception area and bustling workshop. Schaeffler REPXPERT will provide insightful snippets from the visit, which will include discussions about workload efficiency, special tooling and budgets, whilst also covering the fitting of original equipment parts and refusing customer-supplied components, as well as the benefits of using REPXPERT. 64- garageTRADER

In the first part of the video series, Tim first greets Alistair and Andy, before inviting them into the reception area, where conversation quickly turns to how the workshop manages its data, from booking in customers to invoicing, and what allows Oldfields to be a well-organised business. Tim said: “From a managing data point of view, it’s important we have one system to handle the whole process, as, not only does it manage customer information, it enables us to create job cards, technical information and invoices. “The whole process is timed; from a workshop perspective, it’s important we sell hours, so by having a system that times the job from start-to-finish, we know how long it’s taken and what to invoice.”

He added: “I would love to sell 100% of all hours, but it’s simply not possible. It’s not about a ‘bonus culture’ of trying to get my team to do jobs as quickly as possible either; it’s about doing the job right, having the right information, using the right quality of parts and having the right skills in the workshop.”

A pivotal part of the business model is “efficiency”, according to Tim, who is realistic with his ambitions and expectations of his team.

“When we’re fitting a selfadjusting clutch kit, for example, we use a Schaeffler tool, and, yes, we could do the job without it – but it makes it so much more difficult

In the second clip, within the workshop, the trio debate the importance of special tooling and budgeting for them. Tim said: “Keeping up-to-date (with tooling) isn’t easy for an independent, but we invest in it. If there are jobs on a repeat basis that are a challenge, it is not efficient to keep doing it slowly, so we need to buy the tools to enable us to do it faster and accurately.

and there’s the possibility of doing the job wrong.” On the topic of budgeting, Andy added: “Tooling and equipment, as well as training, should be an ongoing process.” He then asked what Oldfields’ budgeting strategy is – Tim replied: “We don’t have a fixed budget, but I’m aware that we need to factor it within our costs. We don’t buy a new diagnostic kit every year, for example, but we subscribe to it and keep it updated.” From Schaeffler’s point of view, it offers a range of tools to help clutch, bearing and timing belt fitments, to ensure technicians can ‘fit and forget’. Air Plasma’s Versatility makes it the Perfect Choice for Automotive Repair

W

hether you need to fix an exhaust system, remove a bent or crushed bracket, replace a body panel, or fix up a frame; there is one tool that can do it all: air plasma. Its versatility makes plasma an indispensable tool for people who work in automotive There aren’t many other tools that can do what plasma can do. Today’s plasma systems are portable and efficient and come with many features to benefit auto repair shops. One such feature was created after work with the military. A product development team from Hypertherm, a leading manufacturer of plasma systems, was working to make it easier for the military to repair armored vehicles in remote locations. Going in, the team thought the military would want something that was extremely lightweight and compact.

66- garageTRADER

What they learned was quite different. Following a demonstration in which the team showcased a lighter, more portable version of its Powermax air plasma system, one of the service members held up his hands, separated them by about 76mm, and said, “The biggest improvement you could make, is to give your torch about this much more reach, with a really narrow tip.” This simple gesture and single comment prompted the design of extended length Powermax consumables. The extended consumables provide users with extra reach when cutting

or gouging in hard to access or confined spaces, such as inside an engine compartment or wheel well. It also reduces secondary operations and the need to utilize other equipment like a grinding wheel or oxy acetylene torch. Though plasma is best known as a cutting tool, plasma systems are also great at gouging. Plasma is an effective method of removing spot welds. Another benefit of plasma is its ability to cut the wide range of metal types found on today’s cars. From mild steel, to stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized, copper, cast iron, and even painted, rusted,

and dirty metal, plasma will cut it without damaging or warping the metal surrounding the piece getting cut. Auto repair shops also appreciate plasma’s ability to work anywhere that compressed air and an energy source are available. When hooked to a portable motor generator and a portable compressor or gas cylinder, a plasma system is truly mobile. And unlike oxyfuel cutting, which requires the use of a flammable gas, plasma is safer. When choosing an air plasma system, there are several factors to consider. Cut capacity and cut quality are at the top of most lists,

Duty cycle is an approximation of how long a system can operate in a continuous cut within a 10-minute period before overheating. A duty cycle of 50 percent means a system can cut continuously for five minutes at full output before needing five minutes to cool down. A 50 percent duty cycle is normally more than enough for repair shops. Beware though as not all manufacturers determine duty cycle the same way. Some manufacturers will use a lower ambient temperature rating and/ or lower load voltage rating when testing to make their duty cycle appear higher.

ITS POTE THE POSSI

EASE OF USE Simple operation is a requirement in a plasma tool as it allows you to get the job done faster with less headache and frustration. It also means people with little or no experience can get good results. Regardless of experience level, operators using plasma can get jobs completed quickly and with good quality, keeping time-sensitive projects on schedule. OPERATING COST

but system reliability, duty cycle, ease of use, and operating cost are also important. With that in mind, here are some additional factors you should consider before buying a new system. POWER OUTPUT AND SPEED People often equate system power with amperage. The thinking is that the system with the highest amperage will provide the most power. That isn’t necessarily true. What really determines power output is watts (or kilowatts.) To get that number you need to multiply amps by volts. It’s possible for a 30-amp system to

have more power than a 40-amp system if the 30-amp system has more volts. Another tip: look at cut speed ratings when comparing advertised cut capacities between manufacturers. If a manufacturer says a system can cut 13mm material, you’ll want to understand how fast the torch was moving as some manufacturers will overstate cut thickness by moving the torch at a very slow speed. PORTABILITY REQUIREMENTS Obviously, if you don’t plan to move around a lot, you can get away with a larger system.

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

However if you plan to move your system around or use it in the field, you’ll want to take system size and weight into account. Fortunately, engineering advances mean you can now get a lightweight system without sacrificing power and performance.

When it comes to cost, it is ENDLESS P tempting to buy the system that CUTTING, E costs the least. However, it’s important to understand how much MARKING, M a system will cost over time. For instance, a system that costs less money to buy initially, but cuts slowly, inconsistently, or even stops working a few years after you buy it, is no bargain. You also need to look at consumable cost and consumable life since it can vary significantly from one brand of plasma to another. Longer consumable life reduces downtime for change-outs and lowers your consumable costs . In conclusionplasma’s ability to perform various applications, in almost any location, and on most Portable, state-of-the-art and endlessly metal types, forms and thicknesses gives it distinct over ® family deli choose from, advantages the Powermax other cutting technologies.

TRICO

TRICO launches new two-metre display that stocks full Exact Fit range

T

RICO has unveiled its new planogram design with signage, which allows retailers and motor factors to display the entire Exact Fit programme to their customers – using just a single two-metre bay.

The Exact Fit programme is a comprehensive range of direct fit, original equipment (OE) replacement blades, with almost 150 references giving 99% front and rear wiper coverage. This new display system means motor factors and retailers can display this full programme without compromising on space inside their branch – perfect for walk-in customers. Reducing stock keeping units (SKUs) by up to 35% compared to other OE brands is also a critical advantage for stockists, and TRICO is able to achieve this because its

unique clips will fit up to three arms in one. It also has a single pack philosophy, which gives added flexibility with stock and drastically reduces the number of SKUs required.

TRICO Senior Brand and Product Manager, Sam Robinson, said: “We’re delighted to reveal this new display and stylish consumer display signage. It is vitally important that we listen to customer feedback and show them that we’re working on new innovations, as well as continuously improving our products, to help them increase their sales and stock levels, and continue to provide the best tools to support their wiper blade sales, which we are confident we have achieved with this new layout.”

DRIVERSEAT

Ian Scott - Owner Carryduff Auto Parts

Tell us about your career so far? I spent 12 years as a civil servant and then the last 30 years at Carryduff Auto Parts, near Belfast. Did you plan to get involved in this industry? No! In my younger days I worked in my uncles garage at The Temple, so I didn’t have to work on the family farm. Farming wasn’t for me, I left that for my brothers! What was your biggest disappointment? 70- garageTRADER

With disappointments you always have to try and take the positives from them and get on with it! What was the best piece of advice you ever received? Be nice to people on the way up, because you might meet them on your way down. Whom do you most admire? Joey Dunlop

What is the most difficult aspect of your job?

It wouldn’t be a car, it would be a Ducati Panigale V4

Ha! Working with my son, could be worse I could be working with my daughter too!

How do you relax?

What is your most effective or personal asset? Always putting the customer first, listening to their needs and requirements. You’ve won the lottery. What car would you rush out and buy?

Watching Ballynahinch RFC or motorcycle road racing, but it’s hard to beat weekends on the North Coast. Tell us something surprising about yourself… I was meant to represent Ireland U21 at moto cross but broke my wrist the week before.
