Get set for Automechanika 2018…

From 5-7 June 2018, the automotive industry’s event, Automechanika Birmingham will take place at the NEC Birmingham. Housing a new layout and with over 500 exhibitors for 2018, 85% of 2017 visitors are intending to return to the exhibition, with this year’s event already shaping up to be another success. This year will feature a raft of new initiatives confirming Automechanika Birmingham 2018 as the UK’s most valuable meeting place for the automotive industry. These will include a dedicated Garage Quarter, extended opening hours, a facilitated meetings programme to allow visitors to pre-arrange meetings with exhibitors, and much, much more. SHELBOURNE MOTORS UNVEILS PLANS FOR NEW £5M MULTI-FRANCHISE COMPLEX IN NEWRY

The new state-of-the-art facility will create 60 new jobs when it officially opens in early 2019 with an additional 100 jobs during construction.

The purpose built 50,000 sq ft development, designed by Clarman Architects, includes four new car showrooms, new car handover bays, a lounge-style waiting area with cafe, used vehicle spaces and customer car parking spaces. It will also have Northern Ireland’s first drive-thru service centre with a 28-bay service workshop that will provide customers with a fast and convenient servicing experience with an emphasis on quality and efficiency. Speaking about the major expansion into Newry, Paul Ward, Director

our lucky NGK customers from Northern Ireland have enjoyed a memorable weekend in London that they will never forget. The customers on the trip, hosted by Stewart Neill, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd – Area Manager for Ireland, were guests of the ignition specialist on St Patrick’s Day at the England v Ireland Six Nations Rugby International at Twickenham. They earned their place by being the top performers in NGK’s Autumn 2017 promotion that was run across all the company’s products. Stewart said: “Unknown to the customers they stayed in the same hotel as the Ireland rugby team and were able to rub shoulders with the Irish officials and players before and after the game. “Treated to hospitality in

Twickenham before and after the game, the guests had top seats to witness what turned out to be a historic day for Irish rugby with Ireland defeating England 24-15 to carry out a Six Nations clean-sweep of wins and win the Grand Slam for a third time.”

elfast and Portadown Audi operated by the Agnew Group, is celebrating after winning three top accolades in an Audi UK-wide contest which recognises excellence among Audi centres. This is the fifth year in a row that the Audi UK national awards have recognised the work of the highly qualified teams in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland Audi won the overall number 1 market area in the UK taking into consideration all the

major key business measurements. Portadown Audi won the top award for the best centre in their region, beating competition from Scotland and North East England. Meanwhile, Belfast Audi was rewarded the number one position nationally for their high levels of customer service and loyalty being delivered to their clients. This is a remarkable achievement for a local company to come out on top in such a competitive environment. The awards were presented to the winning teams by Stuart Clarkson &

TERRY KNOX APPOINTED NEW VICE PRESIDENT OF IAAF T he Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has appointed Terry Knox as its new Vice President, further adding to its wealth of industry expertise. Knox has been a Member of the IAAF Council since 2016, and is Managing Director of CD Group, a third-generation family business with previous Managing Directors, grandfather Stuart Knox and father Ken Knox. The company was established in 1963, with Knox joining in 1999 to help establish the company’s operations in Republic of Ireland. CD Group’s largest trading name, Component Distributors, is a warehouse distributor, supplying Motor Factors throughout Ireland.

Headquartered in Mallusk, the company employs close to 200 people. Knox said: “I had no concept of the depth of work undertaken by the IAAF until I joined the council. The work that Wendy, her team and the council do is to be championed. They work tirelessly on topics that are purely focused on the automotive aftermarket. Wendy’s involvement on a European level, with FIGIEFA, best serves all our interests in a constantly changing industry. “I look forward to working with Wendy and the council to ensure we are best placed to continue to flourish in a world where

DS STORE OPENS IN NORTHERN IRELAND

orthern Ireland’s only DS Store was officially opened on the 19th April by Alain Descat, Managing Director DS Automobiles UK. The purposebuilt showroom extends the Gallic connection for the Halliday family who have taken parent brand Citroen through three generations. The 3,300 sq.ft. showroom with supporting service facilities is located alongside the family’s Citroen dealership near Eglinton on the outskirts of Londonderry, and introduces Parisian chic to an informed generation of prestige car buyers. Speaking at the event, Alain Descat highlighted the design, quality and performance of the new premium brand, confident that DS can challenge the current dominant Germans who, he said, had become victims of their own success. The

evening also saw the launch of the DS7 Crossback, the first of the all-new generation of models independently conceived and free of any Citroen input.

Much was made in his presentation of the Parisian connection and the extended shopping provision in the boutique area of the showroom which offers a range of exclusive accessories. Joining Alain in the opening ceremony was Dealer Principal Andrew Miller who paid tribute to John Halliday and his vision of expansion within the Citroen empire. He also felt it appropriate to acknowledge the expertise of the construction and technical companies in the new building under the architectural guidance of Eddie Mitchell.

A

failure of the differential pressure sensor (DP sensor) can cause irreparable damage to the diesel particle filter (DPF) and involve significant consequential costs in the case of a turbocharger and engine breakdown. The MeyleOriginal DP sensor allows for just the defective sensor to be replaced to help prevent costly damage in the long run. Engineered to OE specifications, the mapping of the DP sensor is fully compatible with the vehicle’s control unit thereby minimising the risk of subsequent damage and false damage diagnosis. Meyle-Original DP sensors are manufactured under ambient air conditions in order to ensure that these highly sensitive electronic components meet the most stringent quality standards. Integrated into the exhaust branch, the sensor measures pressure levels before and after the diesel particle filter. Based on the difference in pressure,

the system determines the level of filter contamination and initiates the filter regeneration process when necessary. If the sensor fails to function correctly, the filter runs the risk of not being regenerated when it is required, which may lead to irreversible filter clogging. This in turn can seriously damage the turbocharger. This is why a defective differential pressure sensor needs to be replaced immediately. Sensor damage is signalised to the driver by means of a control lamp flashing on the dashboard. Changing the diesel particle filter also requires the differential pressure sensor to be replaced. “In recent months, we have seen an increase in the need to replace and repair exhaust sensors used on dieselpowered vehicles”, says Dominik Overman, Head of Electronics & Sensors at MEYLE. He explains that it is not always necessary to replace the complete particle filter assembly

– in many cases, replacing a single sensor can save the workshop and the car owner a lot of time and money. “We have taken a strategic decision to develop our range of sensors for the exhaust branch by adding highquality components, all of which are manufactured to OE specifications. We want to continue along the successful path on which we set out when we chose to add exhaust temperature sensors to our product range, a decision which was based on our philosophy of providing our worldwide customers with products they can safely rely on.” Currently, the range of MEYLE ORIGINAL PD sensors caters for 26 million vehicles registered the world over. With more additions planned for 2018, MEYLE will strengthen its position in this growing market segment while doubling the coverage of its product range, which will

To prevent subsequent damage to the DPF, the sensor must be replaced immediately if the control lamp on the dashboard signals sensor damage. 2. The MEYLE experts recommend that the differential pressure sensor always be replaced along with the diesel particle filter. 3. MEYLE recommends that the sensor pressure hose should be replaced along with the DP sensor.

FORD C-MAX 1.6-LITRE TDCi DIESEL TIMING BELT KIT INSTALLATION

T

he 1.6-litre TDCi diesel engine used in the Ford C-MAX, as well as several Citroën, Mini, Peugeot and Volvo models, features a timing belt driven water pump. As replacing the belt also requires the auxiliary drive system to be removed, Dayco recommend that all the systems’ components - timing drive and auxiliary drive - be replaced at the same time.

This step-by-step technical guide will help technicians through the process, to avoid complications and ensure a first-rate job. As with all primary drive system jobs, the work should be undertaken when the engine is cold, so ideally the vehicle will not have been run for at least four hours. Remove the cowling from within the front wheel arch of the driver’s side to expose the auxiliary belt system. DAYCO GT the tensioner in position with a 6mm pin (figure 1) in order to take off the belt, then remove the tensioner, followed by the crankshaft pulley. This will reveal the phonic sensor and the RPM sensor connector, which needs to be disconnected.

Remove the lower screws of the timing case and then move the coolant reservoir to one side to gain access to the engine mount, which once the engine has been suitably supported from below, needs to be removed, along with the engine mount flange. Then remove the upper half of the timing case, which allows the bottom half to be removed and exposes the timing drive system. Using a suitable pin, such as drill bit, hold the camshaft pulley in its timing position. The crankshaft timing must be carried out with a pin inserted in a hole in the

engine block (see picture box in figure 2) and as this is difficult to reach, it is wise to paint a mark on the crankshaft pinion and engine case. Loosen the bolt on the timing belt tensioner and remove both bolt and tensioner, followed by the timing belt. Replace the idler with the new one from the Dayco kit KTBWP4930 and tighten the nut to 35Nm. Using another suitable pin, hold the fuel injection pump pulley in the correct position and then remove the water pump. Ensuring that the cooling system has been flushed through and no debris is present, install the new Dayco water pump, complete with its seal, followed by the new tensioner, taking care to position it as shown (figure 3). While observing its direction of rotating arrows, install the new HT timing belt, with its slack section facing the tensioner. With an Allan key, rotate the tensioner anticlockwise to tension the belt correctly and tighten the bolt to 25Nm and then rotate the engine and check the timing. The correct belt tension has been achieved if the tensioner is positioned as indicated (figure 4). Naturally, repeat the process if necessary. Refit all the components in their reverse order, but check, and if necessary, replace the crankshaft pulley with Dayco DPV1068, the fastener for which should be tightened to 30Nm + 180°, and the auxiliary belt tensioner APV1076. However, Dayco recommend the auxiliary belt 6PK975 is always replaced.

NORRIS BROTHERS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS

N

orris Brothers Car Parts is celebrating 50 years in a market where the family firm has continued to grow even in the midst of expanding competition. With a knowledgeable background in garage repairs and service, the brothers Alwyn and Morley saw an increasing need for replacement parts in the late 1960s and established their motor factor outlet alongside their former garage. Today, these premises at 52 Tirbracken Road at Drumahoe on the outskirts of Londonderry remain as the central hub to the expanded outlets at Carrickfergus and Coleraine. The early move to Carrickfergus exactly 40 years ago quickly added to the brothers’ reputation and the securing of the Motorcraft franchise gave them an enviable range of quality components. This subsidiary of the American Ford company launched its auto parts division in 1972 to provide replacement and original equipment parts, replacing Autolite as Ford’s official parts brand. This partnership

developed until Ford changed its policy and brought its spares and parts division under its dealership umbrella. But this also benefited Norris Brothers whose established reputation quickly opened doors to a wider range of suppliers, and even today they are adding to their ranges with the latest European and Eastern manufacturers. Morley remains involved in the Drumahoe outlet while son Keith has been responsible for managing the Carrickfergus premises and the late Alwyn’s son, Adrian continues to run the Coleraine side of the operation at NB Autoparts in Pates Lane. Morley highlights both the quality and commitment of the company, assertive that these can best be achieved only in a family business. All the suppliers are high-end manufacturers, and while he admits that these at times might not have the cheapest version of a product on offer, it is by far the best and their reputation is based on supplying quality. He also stresses the personal

NGK laser welds small pins of these precious metals to the electrode tip. Iridium is the best material. It is truly a precious metal – being one of the least abundant elements. It is chosen for its hardness, resistance to heat, oxidisation and wear.

Glow plugs

Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: “Because the glow plug is now a vital part and parcel of the engine management system, as with most other components, it has never been more important to ensure that the installer is fitting the correct specification item. You cannot go for a ‘budget’ alternative nowadays because the engine management system can pick up very quickly the fact that it is incompatible with the engine management system and OBD. “The OBD system will find fault with the item if it is not to the correct specification and the performance of the vehicle will suffer. My advice is always to fit a plug that was manufactured to OE specification – as all NGK plugs are.”

NTK Lambda & other sensors

NGK is the world’s largest

manufacturer of Lambda sensors under the NTK vehicle electronics brand name. It says the experience it has in supplying the VMs worldwide allows it to offer exactly the right sensor for every vehicle application. The company recommends that distributors should encourage workshops to always choose a bespoke NTK OE quality Lambda sensor as alternatives are ‘similar but different’ and there are good reasons why NTK Lambda Sensors are the no.1 choice of VMs around the world. Last year the NGK also introduced new ranges of 87 NTK Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensors and 69 Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensors. For maximum efficiency in engine operation and to ensure effective exhaust gas treatment, the engine control unit (ECU) needs to precisely regulate the air-fuel ratio. SkillAuto 2018 Latest news for the National competition 2018 is that 7 apprentices from Riverpark Training have made it through to the regional heats that will be held in 2 separate events, I1 for Auto Body Repair and 1 for Car Painting. The successful Auto Body Repair competitors are: Matthew Christie (Wrights ARC Mallusk), Connor Davidson (Quinn Hearse and Limousine), Bradley Frizell (Wright’s ARC Dromore), Ruairi Neeson (Agnew ARC) and Sean o Neill (Wrights ARC Carryduff). The successful Car Painting competitors are: Rachel Murray and Aubrey Whiteside both from Charles Hurst ARC. Training has already begun for these guys, as they attended training on Saturday 21st April 2018.

2019 World Skills Up-Date Conor McKevit (Refinishing) and Scott Patterson (Autobody Repair) both from Wrights Accident Repair Centre in Dromore have now joined the World Skills UK Squad, this means their training programme will now kick in and although the World Skills competition is not until August 2019 they cannot afford to be complacent. The countries that win medals at this international competition train continuously for two years prior to competition. Riverpark Training will also be providing additional training on Saturdays when available between now and the competition. On a recent visit by the UK World Skills expert to China in January 2018, he was amazed to discover one of their training tasks on 44- GARAGETRADER

Autobody Repair was to cut a new wing in half, weld it back together then metal finish the repair. This was not just done once or twice but when all eight in their squad had completed this task on 2 ½ tons of panels each. Sceptics may say why bother when these nations put in so much time and effort. Our commitment will always be to meet these challenges head on and provide all necessary support, so our young apprentices can prove themselves on an international level. After all these apprentices are the international reflection of the “Motor Industry” in Northern Ireland. Apprentice Skills Shortage When we at Riverpark Training talk to employers we listen to what they are saying about their needs to improve their workshop skills. We know its not about numbers but the right person for the job, therefore we are urging employers who want the high quality of young people that we also seek for our training programmes to register with “nibusinessinfo.co.uk/ connect-to-success” and name us as your chosen training provider. This government website will advertise apprenticeship vacancies you may have but as your training provider we will conduct the interviews, removing the stress and hassle that apprentice selection may sometimes cause. This is available across all our training programmes, but we would specifically be interested to hear from Dealerships and Parts outlets. We noticed in September 2017 a significant drop in students choosing the apprenticeship route, some of this has been due to students remaining at school as there is a financial incentive now for the schools to retain students. However, the trend is actually more parent-driven, wanting the best for their offspring by pushing them into higher education or university and who would blame them, but university is not for all and can have heavy financial costs. The careers service in Northern Ireland is designed to guide young people to make good career choice, but they can only go on information supplied to them, registering as an employer will also provide your information to these career advisers giving you the edge to keen interested young people. Des O’Connor with his son Adam who plays for Skerries Rugby Club. This was taken after Adam’s first all-Ireland match against Belfast Harlequins. Tell us about your career so far? I was always mad about cars and from an early age I started rebuilding and working on old cars. Our driveway was always full of cars and half cars that I was working on, much to my mother’s disapproval. My first real job was as a merchandiser for Avonmore Dairy travelling between all the supermarkets doing cheese displays. My van was spotted outside P R Reilly’s in Dublin as I was always there getting parts and a job offer followed from Norbert Reilly. I worked in Reilly’s for two years and then was offered a job by Holts which was over 32 years ago.

Did you plan to get involved in this industry? No, not really I was hoping to become a metal work teacher but failed the oral Irish exam.

What was your biggest disappointment?

Whom do you most admire? Joe Schmidt of the Irish Rugby team. I met him a few times and a nicer, more professional man you will not meet.

Brexit.
