The Beginning of Valentine Cards In the earlier era, Romans considered the middle of February as a time to convene and court future mates. The young guys started a custom of gifting handwritten greeting cards on 14 th February to the women they liked. These cards acquired their name as valentines greeting cards from St. Valentine’s name. As Christianity extended further, Valentine’s cards spread to other places. The earliest card, which is in existence even today, was sent by Charles Duke to his wife when he was behind bars in the London Tower. The card can be seen in the British Museum. In the 16th century, a bishop of Geneva named St. Francis de Sales, tried to wipe out the tradition of cards and replaced it with lottery of names of saints. However, this lottery system was unsuccessful. Instead of disappearing, cards propagated and became creative and decorative. By the 17 th century, valentine cards were costly and beautiful.
