Father's Day History and Inspiration It is said that daughters are closer to their dads and sons have a strong bond with their mothers. This could be very true, which is why it was a daughter who realized that there should be a special day dedicated to all the fathers in the world. It is the perfect occasion when children can thank their dad and do something special. The way Father's day is celebrated now was not the same in earlier times. The beginning of this day was absolutely modest and dates back to 1909, Washington, United States of America. It was Sonora Smart Dodd, who initiated the Father's day celebration, and the thought came to her mind when she was listening to a Mother's Day sermon at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church. While listening to the lecture, she got an inspiration to organize a special day that was going to be dedicated to her dad. Her father, Mr. William Jackson Smart, was a single dedicated parent who was burdened with the responsibility to nurture six kids on his own. It was while delivering the sixth child that Mr. Smart's wife left for her heavenly abode. It was a deep realization for Sonora that her dad was challenged to take care of six kids for which he had to give certain major sacrifices so that they all could be happy. She realized how great her father was and decided that Mr. Smart deserved a great honor. So, to pay tribute to him, Sonora held the foremost Father's Day celebration on the 19th of June, 1910. On the similar day it was Mr. Smart's birthday. Ms. Dodd was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father's Day observance. Unlike Mother's Day, Father's Day became a topic of mockery and gossips, but certain incidents happened which changed the entire course! In 1913, a bill was passed in accordance with making it as an official Father's Day celebration. The idea received an approval from the then U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in the year 1916. After eight years, the idea of celebrating Father's Day gained a momentum when President Calvin Coolidge showed his support. In 1926, New York City witnessed a National Father's Day Committee come into formation. Another sixteen years went by before President Richard Nixon established in 1972 that the third Sunday of June will be permanently observed as Father's Day. The day had been primarily nationalized in honor of all doted fathers, who made major contribution towards the happiness of their families. In the present day, people prefer sending Father's Day greeting cards to their father.
