Making a Difference
As I stroll through the card aisle, I can’t help but notice the vast array of cards available for every occasion imaginable. From holidays to weddings, birthdays to congratulations, there seems to be a card for every important day in the lives of my loved ones. However, as I peruse the shelves, I can’t help but feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of man-made celebrations that have been created solely to sell more cards. Grandparents Day, Siblings Day, Bosses Day - the list goes on and on. I nd myself struggling to remember all of these occasions without resorting to a quick internet search.
But there is one month that stands out in my mind - April. Not because of any manufactured holiday, but because it is National Poetry Month. This month holds a special place in my heart, thanks to one man - Don McCartney. Mr. McCartney was my Literature teacher during my junior year of high school. He was a man who loved teaching, and his passion for his craft shone through in every lesson.
I remember eagerly anticipating his class each day, excited to learn new words and explore the world of poetry. Mr. McCartney greeted each of us by name with a warm smile, and his enthusiasm for teaching was infectious. Even when he mispronounced my name, I didn’t mind – the other kids would snicker and one day he gured it out. When he realized his mistake, he took the time to apologize and make me feel special by calling me by my last name, for the rest of the year I was Ms, Parsons.
Don McCartney made a difference in my life that year. He taught me the power of words and how they can uplift and inspire others. And while I may not remember all of the manufactured holidays that ll the card aisle, I will always remember National Poetry Month and the impact that one teacher had on my life.
I rmly believe that sharing our time, knowledge, and thoughts with others is far more valuable than simply giving a card. “Let us aspire to make a positive impact on people’s lives every day.”
As you read the April issue you will be engaged with the people in Destin who give to charities, host non pro t events and dinners. These people are making a difference in the lives of many people in Destin. Gala In The Garden
The Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center (ECCAC) held its annual Gala in the Garden on March 10. The event was hosted by the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa and presented by George and Janice Hendricks. “Any money donated is a big success, however, our goal for this evening is to raise over $500,000,” said Christen Cowgill, Director of Development and Marketing. “This is our once-a-year gala where we put all of our effort . . . and everything we raise, minus expenses, will go to fund our programs which include: the advocate team, our therapy team, the prevention team, and coming soon, our C.A.R.E.S. initiative.”
Fundraising is important for nonpro ts and the Gala in the Garden stands out as a leader. With a live auction enticing bidders to envision themselves in Greece, France, or an upscale cabin in the mountains of Georgia, ECCAC supporters enjoyed bidding on trips and experiences that many only dream of. “This is our 24th Gala and without the support of everyone attending tonight and those that have attended in the past, we would not be able to do what we do,” shared Julie Porter eld, Chief Executive Of
ce, ECCAC
Serving Okaloosa and Walton Counties, ECCAC has Centers in Niceville and Defuniak Springs. Offering a variety of programs that not only educate, but also provide therapy. ECCAC seeks to unite everyone in ending child abuse. With advocates on call 24/7, ECCAC exists to ensure children and families receive all services available to them within the child welfare and legal systems.

Twenty years later, owner-operator Todd Reber, also received the Best Restauranteur Award. Over the past few years, Northwest Florida has also become a mecca for wine lovers due to the growing amount of wine festivals and wine auctions being held in this area. Because of this, highly acclaimed wine makers often visit the panhandle of Florida. It is no surprise that Vin’tij Food & Wine has become one of their favorite locations to host their events so they can educate people about their wines while Chef Ignacio thoughtfully prepares culinary creations that pair perfectly with a variety of di erent wines. Business Profile
Farrow Contracting Inc. was founded in 1996 by John Farrow. A native of San Fransisco, John now calls Destin his home, along with his wife JK Farrow, and their three children. John entered the construction industry as a teenager in need of a job and found one working for a local developer, digging ditches, crawling under houses to remove debris, and handling other hardlabor related projects. His hands-on work experience grew from there and at that point, John knew he had found his calling. He formed his own construction company a few years later. The company started with small remodeling and refurbishing projects and through existing relationships and word-of-mouth references (the best kind!), the business grew exponentially.
A small decision changed the path for John and the company.
Wyndham Resorts & Hotels was remodeling a local resort and when the project ran long and their contractor moved on, there was a small but crucial task to be completed. The resort’s waste and recycling receptacle enclosure needed to be built, a project considered “too small” for the other contractor. Wyndham was referred to Farrow, who agreed to build this small but all-important enclosure quickly and ef ciently. Wyndham was so pleased with the results, they asked John to step in on other construction projects locally and across the United States.
Farrow was soon applying for and receiving state licenses in order to work nationally while serving the hotel, resort, and hospitality industries as experts in new ground up residential, commercial, industrial, hospitality construction, refurbishment, remodeling, and
ADA Compliance. The business thrived and John expanded the company to work internationally while also founding Farrow Development Group to manage investment opportunities on Farrow projects.
Farrow now focuses his business efforts on Florida’s Emerald Coast to be closer to family. Having completed several commercial and residential projects and currently in the works on several more, Farrow plans to continue building homes and relationships in Destin and the surrounding area.
Challenges arise in the contracting industry, but President/CEO John Farrow’s innovative thinking helps his business thrive. During the Great Recession of 2008, as with most builders, Farrow saw a steep decline in demand for construction services. While this was threatening to the construction industry, Farrow was able to identify a niche market of national hotel remodels and focus on that market in the following years. This allowed Farrow to remain pro table during a challenging economy and resulted in increased employment and growth.
John Farrow works with his team members to implement unique solutions for projects when faced with obstacles. In one instance, Farrow was tasked with rebuilding a 46-home neighborhood that was completely destroyed by a wild re. A build of this size and urgency required massive amounts of resources including material and labor. Furthermore, many community members (including laborers) were displaced and unable to join the build effort. As a result, Farrow’s solution was to temporarily relocate national crews to address the steep demand for labor. Since housing was also scarce due to the re, Farrow provided the team with companypurchased mobile homes for the duration of the project, and at the end of the project Farrow allowed those employees to purchase the homes at a fraction of their original costs if they chose to.
Not only was labor and housing in short supply, many supplies were either nonexistent or scheduled too far out to rebuild the homes in a timely manner. One such case was concrete. Farrow needed concrete in order to pour the foundations of the homes and get the rest of the project rolling. Thus, John Farrow made the decision to purchase a concrete ready-mix batch plant, and Farrow Ready Mix was born. This afforded Farrow’s team the ability to source its own concrete and pour the house foundations according to Farrow’s schedule. To this day, Farrow Ready Mix is still in operation.
Price reduction without sacri cing quality is important to Farrow, and this is accomplished through an approach called value engineering. This is when project managers examine the recommended products from architects and engineers and offer alternatives to hopefully reduce the total cost. With multiple great minds from different specialties all considering different products and strategies, the team is most likely to reach the best prices without sacri cing quality on each product.
Thank
Our Mission:
Our mission is to provide a seamless construction experience to Florida’s Gulf Coast, resulting in high-quality builds that maximize value for our stakeholders. With Farrow’s dedication and commitment to each project, our goal is to provide consistency and quality across every project we touch, while maintaining a vision that aligns with our clients’ expectations. We endeavor to provide confidence to all customers through communication and transparency, while working to provide efficient schedules and realistic budget objectives.
Business Profile
LIBERTY CART COMPANY
Three and a half years ago the Elza family made a fateful visit from their hometown of Memphis, TN, to their favorite vacation spot on 30A at Blue Mountain Beach. Staying nearly a mile from the beach, the family found it dif cult to nd parking for their car close to the beach, not to mention the issues with wet and sandy beachgoers hopping back into the family car after a long, fun day in the sun. They repeated this struggle every day during this vacation when one day they realized others were carefree, zipping in and out of spaces in golf carts. The family set out to rent a golf cart of their own but found everyone was sold out for the week, and thus, an idea was born.
Acting on their idea, the Elza family moved to the area and opened Liberty Cart Company six months later. Their goal was to supply a new option in golf carts to the Emerald Coast. They originally opened on Goldsby Road in a small warehouse where they started with just a few carts for sale, and a small rental eet of carts. In October of 2022, Liberty moved into their new home right on US 98 in Miramar Beach. Liberty Cart Company is the exclusive provider for Royal EV and Aetric street legal golf carts and low speed vehicles. They offer sales, service, and rentals, but what they pride themselves on is that they are a locally owned family business with a consistent staff that goes the extra mile to make happy customers. The company has already built quite a following in just a few short months. The family learned quickly that while this is a booming area for vacation properties, referrals can make or break you in this industry and reputation is everything. The father and son Elza team are in the dealership daily and feel they have made great connections with locals and tourists who are visiting the region. They enjoy hearing from the customers how Liberty and staff have made their vacation more stress free and fun by giving them the freedom to park with ease and zoom around town with the wind in their hair in their golf carts.
Both Elza families live in the Sandestin resort and use their carts daily, and several times a year they will head to either Scenic 98 or 30A and go beach hopping for the weekend. “There are so many awesome restaurants, shops, and every pit stop at the different beaches offers a unique experience every time. We highly recommend this to people visiting the area. So many times, folks show up and go to the same beach and restaurants that are most convenient to where they are staying. Get out and explore, you will thank us for it later. And if you don’t have a cart - we will gladly sell or rent you one,” says Brian Elza.
Liberty Carts offers carts at every price point, and with several different options. Most of the models available for sale at their dealership are electric carts with lithium batteries. Older carts use deep cycle batteries that require monthly maintenance to the batteries to keep them operating properly, so these new carts are the wave of the future. It is not uncommon for some batteries to get more than 60 miles on a single charge, and they also can be powered down, so you can unplug for an extended period and the
Thank you for voting us BEST PLACE TO SPOIL HIM
battery will retain the state of charge in your absence.
The Elza family is very proud of what they have created in a short amount of time. Guests visiting their showroom love to see all the American and military ags proudly displayed. They are a very patriotic family and love to support all the branches of the military, rst responders, and those who protect our great country. Often, conversations that start with a golf cart purchase end with conversations about family members who served or are currently serving in the military. The Elza family loves living in this region with so many like-minded individuals who are happy to live here... on the most beautiful stretch of beaches in the United States.
34th Annual Sandestin Gumbo Festival
Hosting a Friday seafood boil, Hammerhead’s Bar & Grill kicked off the 34th Annual Sandestin Gumbo Festival on February 25. Parking lots lled up early and long lines formed as people anxiously waited to sample the gumbo and bloody Marys prepped by nearly 30 Emerald Coast competitors.
With vendors from Fort Walton Beach to Freeport and all the way over to St. Augustine, festival attendees were able to sample everything from gator to seafood gumbo. “Today we’re serving Momma’s Gumbo recipe which we’ve had since 1986,” said Justin Echternacht, Team Lead, Boathouse Oyster Bar. “It’s won multiple awards and with this being our 4th year here we’re looking to win with some gumbo and good bloody Marys.” While Destin’s beloved Boathouse Oyster Bar was only in its 4th year of competing, there were a handful of vendors with many years of experience behind them. “We’ve been loving the Sandestin Gumbo Festival for about 15 years, and we’ve provided gumbo for about 10 of those years, and we’ve won a couple of prizes,” stated Wayne Anderson, Owner, Cabana Cafe. “I’ve retired from making 50 gallons of gumbo and this year we’re serving delicious bloody Marys.”
Serving hundreds of gallons of gumbo and bloody Marys, proceeds from the Sandestin Gumbo Festival support The Village of Baytowne Wharf, Fisher House, and the Sandestin Foundation for Kids.
Jes & Gray Living Open House
Jes & Gray Living hosted an open house for their new Miramar Beach location on the afternoon of March 11. Visitors browsed the gorgeous designs, from bedroom to kitchen furniture, art, textiles, jewelry, and everything in between.
A bar cart was set up at the front with exclusive cocktail options. A spread of food was available in the back with wine and beer available. Guests sipped and shopped in the beautiful store while a violinist played relaxing tunes. Artists from Jamie LeJune Art, Vineyard-Smith Art, and Olive and Indigo were onsite demonstrating their pieces that are available in the store.
Later that afternoon, The District in Santa Rosa Beach hosted a second part of the grand opening event. The District is 30A’s newest, luxury village center. This second event took place at the Stock & Trade Design Co., a gallery of home design options in one place. Jes & Gray has pieces in this gallery, as well.
Jes & Gray Living was formed through a partnership of two families and their passions for business, adventure, travel, design, and a love of all things home. The names Jes & Gray are the middle names of each family’s one and only daughters. The store’s rst location is in Alexander City, Alabama.

article by Anna McGauley StocktonSpecialty oofers Inc. (SRI) was established in 2011 by Mike Miller and Cole Bakker, both roofers who had worked together previously. The new company had humble beginnings and started with one crew, one project manager, and an of ce manager, Cathy Reeves. Since then, the company has seen their business grow far beyond what they had even hoped, and now has 60 loyal and dedicated employees. SRI has purchased state-of-the-art metal fabrication equipment and is now operating a full-service metal shop, along with a service department dedicated to addressing service and repair needs.
SRI prides itself on being a local company here in the Panhandle. Being local is especially important as hurricanes bring in companies from all over the country looking to cash in on the booming business of roo ng during these trying post-storm times. And while these out-of-town companies provide a much-needed service in the moment, their workmanship guarantee is no good to the customer when they’re long gone. Another bene t of hiring local company Specialty Roofers Inc., is they know the specialized needs of the Gulf Coast roof. They are experts on the roof systems, techniques, and installations that are best suited to the area. Their years of experience in the roo ng industry, along with their large team of roo ng specialists, will help them make the best decision on what works for your home or structure. They know that a beachfront home will have different needs than one nestled along the bay or a bayou. SRI recognizes that the work put into your roof before a storm hits can prevent a large amount of post-storm issues.
Specialty Roofers Inc. Is truly a local company who is passionate about their community, this makes them all the more passionate about taking good care of the roo ng needs of their community. The employees of SRI live and work in the community they serve and take pride in the area they live. Their children attend the local schools, and their families attend local churches. SRI believes sponsoring local kids’ sports teams is important, as well as supporting various local nonpro ts. Including sponsoring a clay shooting tournament in November to bene t Westonwood Ranch, a nonpro t that provides life skills and pre-vocational skills to young adults with developmental differences.
From their work high on the roofs, to working with customers and addressing their needs, to supporting the local area, Specialty Roofers Inc. embraces their role as a local expert roo ng company and a proud member of the Gulf Coast community.
4th Annual
Shrimp & Grits Fes val
The phrase ‘sold out ‘means the world to an event, and when the event is raising money for a good cause, these words can be life changing. “The 4th Annual Shrimp & Grits Festival was a huge success, over 1,200 attendees, phenomenal weather, and some of the best shrimp and grits creations thus far,” said Shervin Rassa, Chief Executive Of cer, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast (BGCEC). “Thank you to our community, The Bald and the Beard Restaurant group, our sponsors and all the cook teams for helping us create an amazing event that helps impact the lives of over 5,000 kids that need us most across the Gulf Coast.”
Serving over 5,000 Emerald Coast young people, BGCEC’s mission is to enable all young people, especially those that need them the most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. Since 2020, Destin’s Shrimp & Grits Festival has welcomed thousands of hungry guests while raising tens-of-thousands of dollars for BGCEC. Attending the festival, guests watch chefs and restaurants from the Destin community pour their hearts into their recipes looking to win a People’s Choice or Judge’s Choice award. Additionally, the family-friendly event offered face painting, a camera booth and a live DJ; all with a beautiful view of Destin Harbor.
Soirée on the Bay
For the second year, Children’s Volunteer Health Network organized a lavish weekend to raise funds for their cause – Soirée on the Bay. This year’s exclusive event was hosted on the weekend of March 10 on the stunning Dugas Estate in Santa Rosa Beach. The Dugas family hosts the event each year on their gorgeous property overlooking the Choctawhatchee Bay. Dozens of guests purchased tickets to attend this two-day affair.
The fun started on Friday with a VIP wine dinner with delicious cuisine, local brews, and of course, one-of-a-kind vino. The fun continued Saturday afternoon with a bocce ball tournament, bubbly, and light bites. The weather was divine for an afternoon of mingling and live music. The weekend came to a close with a sunset toast, a ceremonious shooting of the cannon, and reworks.
All proceeds from this weekend bene ted Children’s Volunteer Health Network. CVHN‘s mission is to eliminate barriers to accessible and affordable healthcare for children in need through mobile solutions and community partnerships. The nonpro t has two mobile dental clinics and has just added mental health to their provided services.

Rhodes Auto Repairs 50 Year Anniversary
Looking to live somewhere warm, Luther and Donna Rhodes moved to Destin in 1969. At that time Destin was barely a twinkle in most people’s eyes. No t-shirt shops, no bumper-to-bumper traf c, no restaurants every few feet; just shing, sand, sunshine and a 3-month tourist season. Before the Rhodes opened their brick & mortar location, Luther was doing repair work on their lawn, while Donna was driving back-and-forth to Fort Walton Beach to get parts for Luther’s repair work. In 1973 they opened Rhodes Auto Repairs on Mountain Drive, and the rest is history.
Much has changed since then and Destin isn’t as quiet as it was in the 1960s and 70s. Stores and other businesses have come-and-gone, yet Rhodes Auto Repairs remains and continues to service the repair needs of the community. An intimate gathering of friends and colleagues took place on March 17 to celebrate their 50-year anniversary. “We’re really honored to own this family business which has been here since 1973,” said Nichole Causton, Co-owner, Rhodes Auto Repairs. Family is important to the Caustons and so is keeping the business a part of the Destin community. “Even though our daughters are girly girls, our dream is to pass this down to them.” 50 years is a lot of time for any endeavor, but for a community which sees quite a bit of turnover, Rhodes Auto Repairs remains strong and is positioned to serve Destin for another 50.
MODERN DESIGN in the Mix
article by Todd D. ReevesThe perception that modern, clean-lined furniture is uncomfortable, hard, and just not good is about to change. IDMI, isidro dunbar Modern Interiors is here to establish that those days are long gone. Modern furniture is not cold, it is not hard, and it is not sterile. Modern is amazingly comfortable, and it o ers some additional advantages to your life such as making your home easier to clean, take care of, and live in.
Modern home furnishings are beautiful, clean-lined, and sophisticated, and enhance the other special pieces you may already have in your home. We have one client who exclaimed, “I have been purchasing antiques for my daughter-in laws for years now, and they just told me that they want none of them… nothing.” Her heart was crushed so we helped her understand that it is ok with the pace of life these days, with people wanting family time, and time to just relax. Antiques need to be admired, expected, and enjoyed. But what we really wanted to say to the daughters-in-law is that they would be better o choosing at least one, if not more, of the pieces to pass to the grandchildren. And finally, what makes the antiques show o and become special could possibly be the clean-lined sofa sitting nearby. So which piece really becomes more important? Of course, the antique piece, which was honoring the wishes of the grandmother who purchased these pieces and the family heritage involved.
When incorporating multiple styles into your home it is best to hire a professional interior designer -- one that knows how to do modern. To do it e ectively, it will take a designer who specializes in modern, like ours who live it, and know what it is to have that special piece from Grandmother’s home mixed in with the pieces that they also love. We had a young woman, a graduate of a very good school for interior design, once tell us that her professor would roll his eyes if the bedside tables matched. We laughed because, in a modern world, they always match! A true interior designer’s job is to work with what YOU love and want --- not what they have seen everywhere and are just muddling through another boring project.
We also know that many of our customers are simply “afraid” to walk into our showroom. They are worried that they might be tempted by the “dark side.” In other words, they have raised their children, downsized, moved to the South, and they suddenly realize that their furnishings are just too heavy. You can’t recreate Tara in a 3-bedroom condo or home. They realize that they don’t like the feel of their homes, their colors, the fabrics are usually heavy, and it all no longer works. We respect that they paid a great deal of money for those pieces, but at some point it just does not work. As designers we understand the spaces and the lifestyles you live. We help guide you down the path of the unknown. There are customers that grew up in the times when modern was the thing and had it in their homes. They really loved it, but as they married and had children, they felt it important to be more traditional to fit in, even when their hearts are into modern. They walk into our store screaming that they are so happy to see color, to see di erent, to see exciting and new, tired of the “same old things” that are o ered in so many di erent places. It’s easier to go the other way, but it also may not be your personality, not your personal style, and plainly, you just don’t like having what everyone else has.
Modern is easy, but e ectively blending it with things you already have is the job of the designer. Tying it all together takes creativity and necessitates the skill of professionals. Please feel free to contact us and arrange a consultation or come into the showroom and see why we have been named the “Best in Destin” for the past 6 years. And you will get to work with amazing, very talented, and creative people who want to make your home, YOUR HOME!

Annual
Chili Cook Off
Chili is usually reserved for fall colors and football, however 80-degree weather didn’t deter 300 people from attending the 2nd Annual Chili Cook Off at Seascape Resort on March 4. Presented by Harris Painting, and hosted by Cabana Cafe, the east parking lot outside Cabana Cafe was lled with colorful tents and people enjoying some of the best chili on the Emerald Coast. Bene ting Emerald Coast Community Cares Foundation (ECCCF), 15 participants competed in two divisions to see who had the best chili on the coast.
Competitors had everything from Mardis Gras beads to a pirate to ensure a win and a couple had a lot to say about the event. Making Chili Great Again’s Denny Schauman, co-owner, Emerald Coast Creations had this to say, “we are defending champions, the event is a lot of fun and it’s good for the community.” She continued, “Emerald Coast Cares is a fantastic organization that does wonderful things for the community, and we really believe in it.” A few tents away, another team was busy with their sweet beef and pork chili. “We are happy to be back for the second year to support Emerald Coast Community Cares Foundation,” said Auston Crow, Owner, Auston’s on 98.
Emerald Coast Community Cares Foundation provides charitable assistance on the Emerald Coast. As a local non-pro t organization, “all of our funds are kept locally in Okaloosa County and Walton County,” said Veronica Trout, Board Member, ECCCF.
Mac & Cheese Festival
Destin Commons saw massive crowds on March 5, and everyone was there for one thing – mac & cheese! The annual Mac & Cheese Festival takes over the outdoor shopping mall each year, with over a dozen booths featuring gourmet twists of this favorite comfort food and a beer garden with local brews.
Hundreds of guests lined up to receive their tokens, and then they started tasting. Once they chose their favorite recipe, they dropped their token into the bucket on their table to cast a vote. There are three categories that each local restaurant can win in total. Winners were: Kid’s Choice: Sauce Boss Burger Co., People’s Choice: Jackacuda’s Seafood & Sushi, and Judge’s Choice: Boathouse Oyster Bar.
According to Shervin Rassa, CEO of The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast, this was the largest event yet with 1,600 tickets sold. All proceeds from this event go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast, which works in the community to promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging, and in uence through its programs focused on academic success, good character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles.

Imagine building your business and watching it grow and thrive, only to have to move to a new location.....then do this every three years. These are the challenges that military spouses and their businesses face every day. The unique life of a military spouse comes with not only this challenge, but many others as well, such as lack of familial support, deployments that lead the spouse to be the sole caretaker of children, and many more. This is why organizations that support military spouses and their businesses, like NWFL Military Spouse Chamber of Commerce, are so important. They help the military spouses grow their businesses, provide support, and create a relationship with the local community that is imperative for success.
What is the NWFL Military Spouse Chamber of Commerce?
We are the home of the military spouse owned business in the Northwest Florida region. The NWFL Military Spouse Chamber of Commerce is a non-pro t organization serving our local military community. We are the rst in the nation to open a chapter for the national Military Spouse Chamber of Commerce (www.milspousechamber.org), whose mission is to ensure that all active duty and veteran military spouse business owners have the tools and resources they need to strengthen their families, communities, and our economy.
How did this organization come about?
Macu Mateo (www.resethomenow.com), and Pamela Bolado (www.womenwhodowonders.org), both military spouse entrepreneurs, met at a coffee meet-up for military spouses and both felt that there was a gap between the military and local community. We both shared our struggles trying to build or grow our business while our spouses were stationed in this area. We put our words into action and created the very rst chapter of the Military Spouse Chamber of Commerce.
What impact does the NWFL Military Spouse Chamber have on the community?
We are determined to bridge the gap between the local and military community. We want every military spouse entrepreneur to have a seat at the table, to network and grow their business, all while minimizing as much as possible the impact of the military lifestyle (constantly moving, limited or non-existent support system, deployments, etc…)
article by Anna McGauley StocktonWhat are some future goals?
We are already in the works creating the 1st Annual MilEntrepreneur FORUM for November 2023 during Veteran’s Week. Partnering with the Panhandle Chapter of FAVOB (Florida Association of Veteran Owned Businesses), we want to put together the biggest military connected entrepreneur event this area has ever seen. Pitch competition, networking, and marketplace are among the activities planned for the FORUM.
What are some challenges your organization faces?
We are a very new organization, so is the national Military Spouse Chamber of Commerce. It has been challenging to get the funding we need to continue our mission.
What events does your organization host? Are any open to the public?
We offer monthly opportunities for military spouses and military connected entrepreneurs to network. We have different speakers for each event that cover the different aspects of entrepreneurship and help our members grow their businesses. We have planned morning meetings and social hours alternating each month. We are focused on military spouse entrepreneurs, but anybody is welcome to attend and support our community.
What is your role and how did you get involved with the NWFL Military Spouse Chamber?
Macu Mateo and Pamela Bolado are both co-directors and co-founders of the Northwest Florida Chapter of the Military Spouse Chamber of Commerce.
What’s your favorite thing about being involved with the organization?
Our military spouse community is fantastic, and we love the fellowship and honest support to each other’s businesses and journeys. We have found that there were many military spouses who felt the same way and we instantly connected due to shared experiences and struggles.
What would you like our readers to know about the NWFL Military Spouse Chamber?
Being a community with one of the largest military presences in the nation, there is still a signi cant gap with the local community that needs to be addressed and bridged. Let us all support our service members and their families.
How can someone get involved and/or support your nonpro t?
We can only do our mission with the support of our amazing local community. Share about us, donate, attend our events, and support and shop military spouse owned businesses!
Visit our website www.milspousechamber.org/nw- orida/ and connect with us.
29th Annual CCA Banquet
For nearly 30 years conservation-minded individuals have been gathering once-a-year to raise funds for their beloved sport. On March 9 nearly 200 shing enthusiasts convened at the Destin/Fort Walton Beach Convention Center on Okaloosa Island for the 29th Annual Coastal Conservation Association of Florida (CCA), Emerald Coast Chapter fundraising banquet. Presented by Gulf Coast Boating Centers, the fundraiser had everything from raf es to live and silent auctions. Participants in the fundraiser were able to bid on trips in Argentina, Africa, Puerto Vallarta, Italy and the Continental United States.
“We are a grassroots organization and the money raised stays in the state of Florida,” said Drew Brant, President, Emerald Coast Chapter. “One of the projects we have scheduled for this year is a fall release of 15,000 juvenile red sh into the Choctawhatchee Bay.” Additionally, funds raised have been used for a variety of habitat improvement projects. “We’ve done a bunch of arti cial reef installs along with plantings of Spartina grass,” John Woodward, Regional Director, CCA. He continued, “that’s why we’re here, all the money stays in the state and we use it for marine habitat improvements.”
Founded in 1985 the mission of the CCA is to “...advise and educate the public on conservation of marine resources. The objective of CCA is to conserve, promote, and enhance the present and future availability of those coastal resources for the bene t and enjoyment of the general public.”
Business Profile
Nichole Causton’s passion and love for real estate started when she was around 4 years old. Being the rst generation born in the US, her father immigrated from Croatia to the US without any resources or even being able to speak English. He worked multiple jobs simultaneously and started investing in real estate. His successful example inspired Nichole to become a real estate investor, then a REALTOR®, and now a Real Estate Broker. Nichole was born and raised in St Louis, Missouri. Watching her dad invest in real estate for passive income taught her about setting long-term goals and creating a legacy. Once she obtained her degree in business from Lindenwood University, she was recruited by Target where she learned about working in a centralized corporate environment. Nichole became a well-loved executive assistant store manager by the time she was 21. Nichole led Target teams with a servant’s heart for almost nine years, opening new stores and eventually managing human resources for a $60M Target store in Memphis.
When she and her husband, Ben, had their rst daughter, Nichole realized she needed a better work-life balance than she could nd in the world of retail. Out of several viable options, she chose to be a pioneer for a solid waste company and implemented a new recruitment department for the company. She started as an area regional recruiter, and after a few years she became head of recruitment for the whole company. She worked there for nine years, and although she enjoyed her job and the people with whom she served, she found herself missing important milestones and wanted to put her family rst, so Nichole and family decided to move back to Destin. As they prepared to move to Ben’s hometown of Destin, every person that Nichole spoke with about her career options said she would make a wonderful REALTOR® because of her ability to connect with people and her passion for real estate investment. She was surprised and intrigued, because even though she and Ben had bought and sold more than 15 properties, the idea was exciting to her. After her family moved to Destin in 2016, Nichole earned her real estate license that November, and already had her heart set on becoming a broker. In September 2019, she earned her real estate broker’s license and started her boutique brokerage Go Coastal Realty. Her husband, Ben Causton, is the owner of Rhodes Auto Repair. “Life’s biggest investments are a home and a car,” explained Nichole, “so Ben and I are one family with two brands. Our businesses are complementary, and we both have the same values and business ethics.” Nichole is passionate about real estate and nds a lot of parallels between human resource management and recruiting, such as staying legally savvy and personalizing service.
Tea Fore Her
For the ninth year, dozens of ladies and gentlemen gathered for an afternoon of tea, food and friends as a part of the annual Tea Fore Her. This year’s celebration was on March 5 at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa. The luncheon included a silent auction, wine pull, music, speeches from breast cancer survivors, delicious food, and of course, tea!
The ballroom was decorated in whimsical balloons and beautiful owers, while attendees donned extravagant hats – some with photos of loved ones who suffered from the disease they are raising money to ght. Ladies took photos together, sipped drinks, laughed, cried and shared stories. Jessica Foster of WJHG News Channel 7 opened the lunch with a story of her own experience with breast cancer, encouraging the audience to perform regular self-examinations and routine mammograms.
For nearly a decade, Fore Her has organized this spring event as part of their signature events supporting breast cancer patients. Tea Fore Her, The Fore Her Golf Outing and the Pink Walk raise funds to nancially assist local individuals diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing treatment. Funds raised from these events are used to pay for mortgage/rent or utilities or helping with auto repairs for patients to get to treatments. This year’s Tea Fore Her was sponsored by Emerald Coast Hospice.

lay my head down each night. In addition to this, our clients were so thrilled to be able to give back and donate pillows. Also, it opened up conversations and gave my team and our clients a safe space to talk about these problems in Okaloosa and Walton County and how we can help. To be able to expand their reach and to help spread the word about such an amazing organization is just a gift. I was completely shocked when they called my name for first place! I knew I had a great interview and a very deserving foundation but there were nine other very deserving charities competing too. I am incredibly honored to represent A Bed 4 Me and grateful for this heartwarming experience.”
Eight Local Children Receive LifeChanging Vision Aid
Alison has been a long-time supporter of A Bed 4 Me and decided she was ready to enter the competition this year showing her commitment to her community and the nonprofit. Participating in The Skin Games, Alison was expected to produce five videos on herself, her business, and her participation with A Bed 4 Me. She was also expected to complete a questionnaire and be interviewed by a panel of judges on why she qualified for the Compassion Award of the competition.
“Partnering with A Bed 4 Me has been a beautiful experience. I personally have seen the impact that a bed has on a child, and it was such a touching experience, and it gave me a new perspective of gratitude when I
On Wednesday, March 15, local families gathered at White-Wilson Medical Center for a vision clinic during which eight children with severe visual impairments received Electronic Video Magnifiers (EVMs) funded by The White-Wilson Community Foundation (WWCF) in collaboration with Sight Savers America (SSA). The high-tech equipment opens a new world of opportunity, allowing the children to see more clearly what they have not been able to before.
The vision clinic was made possible through a $15,670 grant from the WWCF and partnership with SSA, a nationally expanding nonprofit organization that offers free assistive technology for qualifying children. The equipment, training and maintenance services were provided at no cost to the families.
“The Foundation is proud to partner again with Sight Savers America to provide this service to our community,” said Teresa Halverson, Chair of the Board of Directors. “Equipping these deserving children with EVMs is a life-changing experience, and seeing the excitement on their faces is truly incredible.”
EVMs dramatically enhance contrast and magnify objects up to 118 times, allowing children to read, write, do homework, groom
themselves and even see the faces of their loved ones clearly. This is the fourth SSA vision clinic the WWCF has funded since 2015, raising the total number of children served throughout Oskaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton Counties to 29.

I AM DESTIN Steve Reynolds
What is your hometown and how did you end up on the Emerald Coast?
My hometown is Quincy, Florida. As a teenager in 1984 I came to Seagrove on a church trip and was just amazed at the beauty of the area. I came here on vacation until 1995 when I began making plans to move here to start Gulfshore Air Conditioning and made that happen in 1996. I have lived here now for 27 years.
What is your profession?
I am the founder of Gulfshore Air Conditioning. I have always been a mechanically inclined problem solver and chose this profession to help people solve issues with buildings and mechanical systems. In my late 20s it seemed to be a great t and a carryover from my service in EMS and law enforcement. As the company has grown over the years my career has also proven to be very rewarding in growing an amazing staff and having the privilege of working with so many amazing people.
What are some of your favorite things about Destin?
The people, the beaches, the water, and sense of community. Our area is unique because we have an amazing community of caring people making it a safe and prosperous place to live.
Three words that best describe you. Meticulous problem solver.
What is one thing that you do not go a day without?
Prayer. Nothing I am blessed with or have accomplished could have been done without God. Finish this statement. I AM Destin because… I care about the community and strive daily to contribute to the lives of others.
