Healthy, Happy, Beautiful You.

Recently I was blessed with a compliment regarding my overall health and complexion. This sent me thinking about my mother and maternal grandmother. Both were very healthy and youthful in appearance, well into their 80s. Neither seemed to have many wrinkles, and their skin held a healthy glow. I am sure some of this must be hereditary, and partially accredited to their lack of sunbathing. However, I cannot say they were healthy conscious food connoisseurs. They served tasty foods lled with salt, pork fat, and butter, yet they lived long lives with very few health issues. I am cut from the same cloth and try to stay out of the sun, and I de nitely do not eat as healthy as I should. To be quite honest, I catch myself working through meals, and since I do not plan ahead, I end up foraging for food and eating everything in sight. Then it hit me. The secret must be the tonic. My family made medicines from plants, roots, and various other natural herbs. My mother had us on a daily mixture which she adamantly defended as the best thing for a healthy person. I still brew the tonic and take it daily. So maybe our family tonic is the secret to youth. Who knows? If you are interested in the recipe, call me, and I will share it. This month, in our Health and Beauty issue, you will nd some healthy holiday habits in Coastal Cuisine and tips on staying active in Adventure Out. I believe much more goes into healthy living than food and exercise. A happy attitude and a love for life and people will take you a long way toward being healthy. So, as you prepare for the Christmas rush, remember to cater to the healthy, happy, beautiful you.

If you know of a non-pro t or charity holding an event you would like to see featured in VIP Destin, please call me. Our mission at VIP Destin is to support as many non-pro t causes as possible. Thank YOU for reading VIP Destin Magazine; please be kind, courteous, and shop local.

Spor man’s Ba

Born and raised in Louisiana, Crystal LaFosse brought her love for the outdoors to Destin and in January 2022 founded the Emerald Coast Big Game Fishing Club (ECBGFC). With her experience running marinas and shing tournaments, the club has grown tremendously, and in its inaugural year the club has garnered the attention of many area captains and corporate sponsors. On November 5, the organization hosted the Sportsman’s Ball at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Convention Center. Crystal said, “Tonight is the Sportsman’s Ball when we get all of our members and sponsors, along with their family and friends, together to celebrate what a great year we’ve had.”

Throughout the year the shing club hosts a variety of events ranging from club meetings to its annual fundraiser, Destin for Success. Additionally, the club is known for their tournaments which include a youth event along with a women’s tournament.

What differentiates the club from others is its Bill sh Extravaganza tournament in May. Noting a decrease in blue marlin, LaFossse decided to host a bill sh catch and release division with all bill sh earning the same number of points for each release.

While conservation, competition, and camaraderie are important to the club, ECBGFC also has a philanthropic component. As a supporter of the accredited Destin Fishing Class and area art classes, the club raises funds to give back to these endeavors. As a result of the club’s efforts, Crystal noted that, “A part of the banquet was to give our scholarships to art students from Okaloosa and Walton Counties.” Furthermore, the art students also get the opportunity to be mentored by Harley Van Hyning, owner of Gnarly Fish prints. Crystal continued, “Additionally, we will give a check to the Destin Fishing Class.” With Destin High School having the rst shing class in the state, support from the club and everything it stands for will keep Destin known as The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.

Impact 100 of Northwest Florida Annual Meeting

Ten years ago, 100 women came together to donate $1,000 each to collectively create a $100,000 grant to bene t area nonpro ts. On November 6, the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa hosted Impact 100 of Northwest Florida’s Annual Meeting during which 5 - $100,000 grants were awarded.

“This is the annual meeting of our membership and it’s the culmination of our work all year. What’s exciting this year is that we are going to be awarding 5 - $100,000 grants to nonpro t groups serving Okaloosa and Walton Counties,” said Nancy Francis, President. “We have 10 nalists and today our members will be voting on a winner in each of our ve categories: Arts & Education, Education, Environment Recreation & Preservation, Family, and Health & Wellness. It’s an exciting and festive occasion.”

After the President’s welcome and report, the Grant Committee Chair gave an overview of the selection process. Grant nalists presented their application videos and shortly thereafter the voting took place. When the votes were tabulated, the winners were announced: Stage Crafters Community Theater won the Arts & Culture category, Crestview Area Shelter for the Homeless (Education), Pyramid, Inc. (Environment, Recreation & Preservation), The Salvation Army (Family) and Healing Paws for Warriors (Health & Wellness).

Every membership dollar goes to fund the grants, consequently, Impact NWF has donated 4.1 million dollars since its inception in 2012. With a mission to nancially support nonpro t organizations in Okaloosa and Walton Counties by empowering women as philanthropists and leaders, by bridging geographic areas of our region, and by leveraging the talents of diverse women to be a positive change for good in our communities, Impact 100 of Northwest Florida has donated to organizations ranging from Westonwood Ranch to Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center.

Scotch, Neat.

Few drinks evoke such an aura of class, sophistication, and power as scotch whisky. A picture forms in your mind of a well-dressed businessperson, sitting in a dark leather chair, a wall of books placed neatly in rows in the ceiling height built-in bookcases, while discussing the latest corporate or political news. While this may be the stereotypical scotch drinker, you might be surprised at the history and varieties of this spirit that make it appealing to people of all backgrounds, whether you’re in the farming or finance business.

Scotch whisky started its journey from malted barley to now affectionately being called, “The Water of Life” in where else, but the yee olde Scotland Highlands. Rumor has it, Christian missionary monks are responsible for bringing whisky distilling practices to the area. Although experts agree it could have also been farmers in the Highlands that started using their leftover barley to create something magical that might also warm their bodies against the cold Scottish air. However, it wasn’t until 1495 when the first documented mention of whisky can be found in the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, where a Friar by the name of John Cor is named as a distiller. Details are vague for the next couple hundred years with only obscure references in writings to whisky being present at various events. However, in 1644 the tax man came a’callin’ and started taxing whisky and other strong liquors, and in 1707, the combined Parliament passed laws to try and get some control over

production taking place in Scotland. Once taxing brought order to the scotch whisky industry, it was able to flourish, thanks to the patent whisky still creation in 1831 and the Excise Act, which allowed stills to be legal, for a fee, of course. These changes to the industry, as well as the whisky business reaping the benefits of the devastation to the wine and cognac industries caused by the phylloxera beetle in the 1880s, meant a huge uptick in the demand for scotch whisky. While scotch whisky was traditionally made with malted barley, commercial distillers branched out and started making their whisky from wheat and rye in the late 1800s. Today there are five main types of scotch whisky -- single malt scotch is simply made from water and malted barley. Blended malt is a blend of different single malt whiskies, even those from different distilleries. Single grain scotch is made of water, malted barley, and with or without added grains or cereals, while blended grain scotch is a combination of different grain whiskies that can be from different distilleries. Finally, blended scotch whisky is a combination of different types of whiskies and other grain spirits, flavoring, or coloring. This is often done with higher quality whiskies, blended with those that are less expensive or of a lesser quality. By law, to be called scotch, the whisky must have been distilled in Scotland, single malt whiskeys can be distilled anywhere but cannot bear the name scotch unless they are a product of Scotland.

Christmas Parade & Santa’s Arrival

Hundreds of people crowded into the Destin Commons main street to kick off the holiday season on November 18. Not only did this day welcome the holiday season with the shopping center’s annual Christmas parade, but it was the beginning of a week off for Destin students for the Thanksgiving holiday. Visitors arrived early to decorate cookies, have their faces painted, and take photos with Frosty and Rudolph by the Christmas tree. Once the parade began, it was not long before Santa came riding in on a boat provided by Bass Pro Shops. Then after counting down for the tree lighting, the sky lit up with reworks. Christmas has arrived at the Destin Commons, and Santa has even set up his workshop in the Bass Pro Shops for everyone to stop by and see.

Cover Reveal Party

Guests of VIP Destin Magazine attended the November Cover Reveal Party on November 3 and enjoyed not only the ambiance of Destin’s Pepito’s Mexican Restaurant, but also some much-needed downtime and a little networking with area professionals. Area General Manager, Diyana Nikolova, greeted attendees and shared with VIP Destin Magazine why Pepito’s is a long-time supporter of the magazine. “We love advertising in VIP magazine because they provide a high-quality product and customer service like we do. We like the partnership with them because VIP Destin supports the locals and has the area presence that we like to have.”

Attendees enjoyed November’s Dine & Drink Local cover which featured Jessica Knowlton, Misty Rae Ruthrauff, and Penny Wahab with Saltwater Restaurants. Being a Cover Reveal Party, guests commented on the colors in the cover photo and recalled stories about people they knew; some who made the cover and others who were in articles. As always, there were beverages, scrumptious hors d’oeuvres, and door prizes topping off the November Cover Reveal Party.

Fa La La Fashion

From office parties to family dinners to gettogethers with friends, the holidays offer plenty of opportunities to dress up and show off your style. And while the ugly sweaters and matching pajamas have their place in the holiday season celebrations (frankly, there are few things better than forcing your teens to wear matching pajamas), there are more occasions that call for dressing up than gluing mirrors on your sweater and calling it an “ugly sweater.” While the last thing you want to have to worry about during the holiday season is how to be fashionable yet festive, we have simple tips so you can focus on finding that perfect gift, rather than stressing over your outfit.

One easy way to dress for the holidays is to simply, wear the colors of the season. That’s right, you don’t have to run out and buy a new outfit for a holiday event, unless of course you want an excuse to shop. Wearing the colors of the season is an effortless way to create a festive look from what’s in your closet. Especially because there are so many colors affiliated with the most wonderful time of the year: greens, reds, and blues are of course associated with the holidays, as well as silver and gold. Most people have these colors in their wardrobe already and can throw together an outfit that adds the fa la la to their fashion. Another simple way to dress for the season is to accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. Because as Michael Kors once said, “Accessories are the exclamation point of a woman’s outfit.” However, when you hear holiday accessories, you may think about an obnoxious Christmas light bulb necklace or a Santa hat, but there are ways to use accessories and make your outfit festive that are a little more understated and add a bit of class

and elegance. One way to use accessories is with a handbag or clutch that sparkles, shines, or just has a festive look. Simple, yet seasonal jewelry like jeweled earrings is also a great way to show your holiday spirit while keeping a classic, put together look.

A far flashier look for the holidays that certainly brings the cheer are the sparkly, shiny fashions of the season. Now, unless you’re on the pageant circuit, there are not many times of the year where you can show up in sparkles and people don’t give it a thought. Luckily for those that like to bring the razzle dazzle, we have the holidays, which is a perfect time to show off your sparkly side. Go bold and beautiful with a sequined top or go head to (nearly) toe with a sequined dress, both of which will show off your festive spirit while making a statement. While sparkles can be worn throughout the holiday season, they are never as popular as they are on New Year’s Eve, a time when there are over the top parties, celebrations, and outfits abound and revelers are joyously ringing in the New Year.

For the men who want to be fashionable and festive, we’ve got you covered. Although your fashion choices may not be as vast, there are still options available to keep you stylin’ while you’re rockin’ around the Christmas tree. A classic holiday tie is always a nice way to show your holiday spirit, as well as festive socks. Wearing the colors of the season, however, would be the simplest way to be festive and fashionable. A nice red or green sweater or sweater vest will have you ready for that holiday party with ease.

The holidays really are a spectacular and magical time when we get to come together with friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors to enjoy great food, the sounds, spirit, and the fa la la fashions of the season.

Dozens of guests arrived at Regatta Bay Golf & Yacht Club on the evening of November 17 dressed in their best holiday attire for the 10th Annual Bourbon at the Bay. This prestigious, sold-out event helps kick off the holiday season on the Emerald Coast.

The clubhouse was covered in sparkling lights, and it felt like Christmas as you entered to the sight of holiday decor and smiling faces. Once guests signed in at the Destin Chamber of Commerce table and received their drink tickets, they wandered around the club sipping samples of the best bourbon, scotch, and champagne.

Tasting tables were offered by local businesses such as CRC Data Technologies, Executive Air Cooling, Heating & Refrigeration, Gibson Beach Rentals, and Warren Averett. Guests munched on catered hors d’oeuvres and desserts sponsored by First National Bank. They mingled and bid on the silent auction, which included a variety of gifts, trips, and other items. At the bar there were more specialty cocktails, thanks to bar sponsor R3 Construction.

For the fourth year, Beach Liquors sponsored the VIP Room where guests were offered more high-end options and enjoyed chatting and watching football on the atscreen. Hand Arendall Harrison Sale was once again the presenting sponsor for this delightful event.

Healthy Holiday Habits

The holidays are a glorious time of the year! A time when excess is not only accepted, but also encouraged. You can’t have too many drinks, too many tasty treats, or too many gifts. And while some people see the holidays as a free for all to eat, drink, be merry, and deal with the extra pounds later, others would rather stay on track and keep up the healthy habits they’ve practiced throughout the year. This is a difficult, but not impossible feat as substitutions can be made, as well as tips and tricks to keep you staying fit and healthy through the holidays and avoiding the need to start all over again in the new year.

While laying off the holiday spirits is a helpful hint, it’s probably the least popular one. After all, ‘tis the season for holiday parties, right? Going easy on the alcohol helps you stay on track in a couple of different ways. First, it saves the excess and empty calories that go along with partaking in spirits, as one drink leads to two which can lead to “oops, how many have I had?” Another way alcohol can derail your journey to holiday health and wellness is that it lowers your inhibitions when it comes to food. Drinking alcohol may lead you to gathering around the appetizer table or accepting desserts when you wouldn’t normally do so. Now if having a cocktail or two is a necessity to be around, ahem, certain people you only see at holidays, go with lighter drink choices such as seltzers, light beer, wine spritzers, or liquor mixed with diet sodas, water, or low-calorie mixes.

Another way to control your healthy food intake is to make sure you have plenty of good, wholesome options at your gathering. You can control the food you serve by making options available that you know are healthy and won’t make you have all the regrets that go along with overindulging. Whether it’s naturally low-calorie foods like steamed vegetables or using substitutions such as applesauce instead of oil in your baking, knowing that there are healthy, delicious choices will help melt the stress and (hopefully) the pounds away. You can do the same even if you’re not the host of the holiday gathering but you’re bringing a dish. Providing a healthy dish will guarantee not only you’ll have something you can eat without guilt, but the other guests will thank you.

Focusing on controlling stress is a great way to stay healthy over the holidays -- not only does is stop you from that pesky stress eating, but it also allows you to focus on enjoying the season with friends and family rather than feeling overwhelmed and wishing the time away. While you would think that weighing yourself during the holidays would counteract the last tip of controlling your stress, it’s actually a great idea. Keeping an eye on your weight can help you stay on track and on top of any large weight gains that might sneak up on you. Again, who wants to start off the new year trying to get back to your pre-holiday weight and healthy habits.

Other tips and tricks to keep up your healthy holiday habits are to practice mindful eating. This means putting down the electronics and other distractions and focus on the food you’re eating, chewing slowly and savoring flavors. Also, practicing portion control by using smaller plates will trick your brain to believe you’re eating just as much, and you’ll be satisfied without excess calories. Skipping second helpings, as well as planning ahead on how you’ll handle the pressures and allure of holiday goodies will help you navigate this tempting time too.

While the holiday season can be a trying time when you’re trying to stay on track and maintain healthy eating, it’s not impossible. There are many easy ways to keep your healthy habits while still enjoying family, friends, and parties, while not missing out on the holiday cheer that goes along with the most wonderful time of the year.

In December of 2020 Harshil Patel opened the doors to Destin’s newest go-to for burgers and wings, Fatboys. Originating in Alabama, Fatboys has 3 locations, and on October 27 the Destin location hosted the Destin Chamber’s Business After Hours monthly event. “We are honored to host the Destin Chamber Business After Hours. We look forward to community involvement and working with the chamber,” said Jenn Bailey, Fatboys District Manager. Offering daily specials and weekly events, Fatboys menu includes a variety of sandwiches, sides, and chicken wings. With fresh, never frozen beef and french fries that are dropped only when ordered, Chamber members and guests were in for a treat.

Destin Chamber attendees mingled inside the restaurant and on the deck as they enjoyed beverages and an assortment of Fatboys sides, all while networking in a relaxed atmosphere.

Fit, Healthy, You

The older I get the more I realize that taking care of my health and wellness has more to do with my overall wellbeing than staying at a certain weight or getting into a cute dress. Health and wellness are about taking care of the one and only body we are given and helping it work for us, as well as prepare it for any issues that might come up. Eating the right foods and preventative healthcare are two of the steps that lead us on the path of being our best selves and helping our bodies achieve peak performance. Keeping our bodies active is also important to our health and wellness and while it can be easy to talk yourself out of exercising at times, or so I’ve heard, the health benefits far outweigh those extra minutes of sleep. Any activity is great for the body and shouldn’t be discounted. Don’t have time for a full workout? A 20-minute walk or a quick kettlebell set will do. But if you’re looking for the most bang for your buck, the following exercises not only deliver, but they’re also fun, challenging, and bring the benefits!

Yoga has been around for thousands of years. Once used by monks in India to strengthen and prepare their bodies for hours of silent meditation in a sitting position, the practice is still widely used today. Modern day yoga hasn’t changed much, with a goal of strengthening muscles, detoxifying the body, and increasing fle ibility, the basics remain the same. Some would argue that with the constant movement, screens, and stress filled life these days, yoga has become more important than ever before. One of the most appealing things about this practice is that it’s truly open to people of all ages and all physical capabilities can enjoy the health benefits from yoga. And what health benefits there are tudies have shown that yoga can help with pain reduction, as well as improving strength, balance, and fle ibility. our heart also benefits, as yoga can reduce stress and body inflammation. verall, yoga is a well rounded exercise that’s good for the mind, body, and soul.

Strength Training is often cast aside in favor of good old cardio when it comes to health and fitness, especially for women. The fear of getting bulky, or not knowing where to start prevents many from giving strength training a try. owever, fumbling around and e ploring new e uipment at the gym might just be worth the health benefits building those muscles offers. According to scientists, lean muscle mass reduces with age, that’s why our body fat increases as we get older. hile find this fun fact, well, not so fun, there is a solution to slow this process keep those muscles strong. ot only does strength training help with controlling your weight, but it can also help you develop strong bones and joints, which both become more important as we age. t can also help with cognitive skills as well as manage chronic conditions such as depression, diabetes, and heart disease. hile it can be intimidating to start strength training, with health benefits like these, the payoff will be well worth it.

ften overlooked unless the summer lympics are on, Swimming is the underrated king of e ercise. f you’re looking to burn calories, the pool is where you want to be. esearch shows that a slow to moderate stroke burns double the calories as that of walking and triple the calories of walking if swimming at a more vigorous pace. wimming is also good for people who want to be active but are held back by arthritis, injuries, or disabilities, as the water reduces the impact and is kinder to the body. Asthma sufferers can benefit from swimming as well due to the humidity in indoor pools and the practice of holding your breath while swimming can strengthen the lungs. wimming is also a heart healthy e ercise and benefits the cardiovascular system by working the heart and lungs, all while reducing stress. f course, we’re lucky to live in lorida where outdoor swimming is available far longer than for our friends up north, however indoor and heated pools are also readily available in the area for those who don’t enjoy a polar plunge.

Destin is Grateful

Leadership Made in America - this is the motto of the Special Operators Transition Foundation (SOTF). Founded in 2013 as Your Grateful Nation, SOTF provides a tailored program for special operators transitioning from military life to the corporate world. Since its founding SOTF has helped hundreds of special operators with their transitions. On October 29, the Hilton Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort hosted a soldout crowd for SOTF’s local charity event Destin is Grateful.

“Tonight we are holding a dinner bene t with some guest speakers, the Horse Soldiers from Afghanistan,” stated Tommy Stoner, CEO and Executive Director, Special Operators Transition Foundation. He continued, “The purpose of this bene t dinner is to raise awareness of our program and make connections with local business leaders, and also raise funds to continue the mission to help special operators transition from the military to the next phase of their lives.” The event included a pre-banquet VIP mingle, along with silent auction vacations ranging from an Alaskan cruise to an African photo safari. Additionally, there were donors and event sponsors to complement the money that was raised during the silent and live auctions.

While the event was an important fundraiser for SOTF, the highlight of the evening was the panel Q&A session with the “Horse Soldiers.” Memorialized in the movie 12 Strong starring Chris Hemsworth, the Horse Soldiers were own into Afghanistan to partner with local forces to ght against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Not knowing fully what to expect, the special operators met up with unknown local forces led by General Dostum, and eventually rode horses into combat, subsequently becoming known as the Horse Soldiers.

The SOTF event was an emotional ride of laughs and proud support for the US military. To learn more about SOTF’s transition program check out their website SOTF.org.

Interview with Ashton Hayward III, President Andrews Research and Education Foundation

What is the Andrews Research and Education Foundation?

Andrews Research & Education Foundation is a prestigious medical research center that brings together the highest levels of sports medicine education from doctors, researchers, and rehabilitation professionals. Collaboration at this level generates momentous opportunities. We collaborate with our health system partner Baptist Healthcare, Andrews Institute physicians, and industry leaders to research cutting edge solutions that impact the future of sports medicine, and we offer specialized fellowship programs preparing the next generation of physicians and surgeons with real-world experience and mentoring. We also deliver high quality education through our videos, webinars, seminars, conferences, and publications.

How did the organization come about?

The Andrews Research & Education Foundation was founded in 2007 as an integral part of the Andrews Institute where physicians could engage in groundbreaking medical research and disseminate educational information to the healthcare community and patients.

According to Dr. James Andrews, “The facility was a natural way to house the research and education to train and educate fellows in orthopedic sports medicine, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and coaches to help prevent sports injuries. It was part of the design to have research and education on campus.”

What effect does the Foundation have on the community (and the medical community)?

When you think about healthcare, the unique thing that really separates us here on the Andrews campus is that we provide opportunities and the best access, which is something that Dr. Andrews preaches. You can see a physician, get rehab done, evaluate human performance, and more, with an emphasis on research and education. Our goal is to be a leader in the eld of musculoskeletal research and education to advance the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and enhance human performance and quality of life for people of all ages.

With our team of physicians and partnerships, we offer our patients some of the most advanced healthcare in the U.S. We are also able to offer patients the opportunity to participate in clinical research which can provide more and better treatment options and other opportunities to improve their health outcomes.

How is Andrews Research and Education Foundation funded?

The Foundation is a non-pro t that relies on philanthropic support to continue our many research and educational platforms. When we receive donations, we want to make sure our donors know who they are supporting and how it is impacting the community. We strive to ful ll our mission through our fellows, biomechanics lab, surgical skills lab, and our regenerative

lab. Our research in these areas enables us to expand both locally and nationally on enhanced or new techniques for treating youth, college, and professional athletes as well as our military and general population. We also receive funding through our partnership with Baptist Healthcare, sponsored clinical trials, government and private grants, our Andrews physicians, and contributions from those who want to support healthcare research.

How can someone help, get involved, support, or donate?

We welcome anyone with a passion for sports medicine, medical research, healthcare education, or related endeavors to reach out to us directly by phone or email to discuss ways we can partner. Our contacts are available on our website, as well as opportunities for careers, fellowships, and internships. Patients who want to participate in research studies and clinical trials can learn more on our website or by calling 850-916-8570 to see what opportunities they may qualify for. Our educational offerings can be found at andrewseducation.org. We host weekly lectures that are free and open to the public on Monday nights at the Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze or available via Zoom. We happily accept donations by check in the mail or online through our website. To keep up to date with the latest activities and offerings of Andrews Research & Education Foundation, text “AREF” to 22828 to subscribe to our monthly newsletter.

How did you become involved with the Foundation?

When I decided against running for a third term as mayor of Pensacola, I knew I still wanted to be engaged in our community and make an impact in people’s lives. I knew healthcare was a perfect vehicle for this. The privilege of knowing Dr. Andrews for 20+ years and having two knee surgeries at the Andrews Institute, I fully knew what the Andrews Way was about. So, when the opportunity presented itself to work with the Andrews family, I was excited to learn what I didn’t know in healthcare and to experience what the incredible people in healthcare do daily, from the nurses to the techs to physicians to the researchers and everyone involved in direct and indirect care.

Healthcare is very complex, so I knew that everything we do at Andrews Research from clinical trials, helping those in our special forces community, along with preparing the next generation of orthopedic surgeons through our Fellowship Program was a great opportunity to partner with the right team. The Andrews family has that with Dr. Andrews and Mark Faulkner, the CEO of Baptist Healthcare.

What’s

your favorite thing about being part of the Andrews Research and Education Foundation?

Being a part of creating value for our community when it comes to research and education. We get a front row seat with the research our physicians are doing here at our center of excellence.

The obvious answer is working with Dr. Andrews and the rest of the team. The unique thing is that I know that we are making an impact on people’s lives to help them with their long-term healthcare needs every single day.

I feel like when I leave to go home, I’ve learned something new every day, and we’ve impacted someone’s life, which is a real privilege to have the same experience here at Andrews as when I served the people of Pensacola.

What else would you like our readers to know about the Foundation?

When you think about the Andrews Institute and the Andrews Way, research is a big part of Dr. Andrews’ pillars. The great thing about Andrews Institute is that we are doing research, and serving not only Northwest Florida, but also patients from across the world. Our fellowship program physicians are training to be the next great leaders in orthopedic sports medicine across the country, and the really cool thing is that we are training them right here in Gulf Breeze and Pensacola, FL.

Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation Receives $40,000 from South Walton Beaches Wine & Food Festival

The annual South Walton Beaches Wine & Food Festival donated $40,000 to Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation (DCWAF) to support 17 children’s charities in Northwest Florida on Aug. 31, 2022. The Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation held its 2022 Charity Golf Classic on Friday, Sept. 23, at Burnt Pine Golf Club in Sandestin. The tournament raised $218,145 for a new CT scanner at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast to better serve adult and pediatric patients.

The CT scanner, arriving in late 2022, will enhance the experience of patients with its speed and image quality. For example, an entire adult chest, abdomen and pelvis study can be conducted in approximately one second so patients don’t need to hold their breath. This speed also reduces the amount of radiation, therefore improving safety. The quality of images produced from the machine allows for better detection of lesions and abnormalities to ensure more accurate diagnosis.

Since 2002, the Charity Golf Classic has raised more than $3 million for various expansion efforts at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast including; the Olson Women’s Diagnostic Center, the Family Birth Place, the Judy & Steve Turner Heart and Vascular Center, Cancer Center, the Emergency Department and the Comprehensive Spine Program.

When something is done right there will always be a crowd, especially if food is involved. Half Shells on the Harbor proved that to be true during the Second Annual Oyster Festival at HarborWalk Village in Destin on November 12.

Once again, the early VIP event was a huge hit with an oyster shucking class and premier tasting of Distillery 98’s brand new Half Shells Vodka. More than 12 restaurants and seven beverage vendors were on hand sampling their best oysters, cocktails, beers, and other specialties. Festival goers had the chance to vote on their favorite oyster. This year’s winners are East Pass Seafood & Oyster House, Hurricane Oyster Bar & Grill, and Outcast Seafood for Judges Choice, and AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar got the title of People’s Choice.

New to the festival this year was a farmer’s market featuring regional oyster farmers and the option to purchase fresh oysters to take home. The event bene ted Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance, Choctawhatchee Bay Estuary Program, and Emerald Coast Fisher House.

The Walton Area Chamber’s November Business After Hours was hosted by Renovation Flooring owner, Mike Anderson, and his staff in Miramar Beach. A monthly event, this is one of the Walton Chamber’s driving forces to promote, develop and advocate for successful businesses in the community.

“Our Walton Area Chamber’s Business After Hours features different businesses and sponsors each month,” commented Walton Chamber CEO Megan Harrison. “It’s one of the most popular networking events in the area, and certainly a nice way to bring together members of our area’s business community for an evening lled with food and friendship.”

The Walton Area Chamber serves the Emerald Coast area in Northwest Florida. For further information, visit WaltonAreaChamber.com.

Glitz & Glamour

In 1976 a small group of women formed the Lakeshore Woman’s Club with a mission to improve the community through donation of services and/or money, and to provide enrichment to its members by civic and personal education. Shortly after its founding, the Club changed its name in order to better identify with the community. Today, the Destin Woman’s Club supports a variety of charities, including the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast and its own Destin Woman’s Club Assistance Fund. On November 4 the Club met at Louisiana Lagniappe in Destin for its annual fashion show Glitz & Glamour.

“We have this fashion show every year in the fall, although the last two years were canceled due to Covid,” said the Club’s Vice President, Sylvia Vazquez. “We are back, and this year we have 150 people in attendance. Proceeds go to the Fisher House and our family fund which supports people who may have fallen through the cracks and the money from the family fund can be used for needs such as medical bills or rent.” Major corporate sponsors included Have Travel Memories, The Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, and Betsy Sells Avon. Before the fashion show ticket holders were treated to a large silent auction which included fabulous donations from area businesses including Bay Breeze Patio, Mattie Kelly Foundation, and Sinfonia. Additionally, there were gifts from area golf courses, spas, and hotels.

Whether it’s funding Fisher House of the Emerald Coast or the Destin Woman’s Club Assistance Fund, Club members live up to its mission of enriching the community.

What is your hometown and how did you end up on the Emerald Coast?

I was born in Tampa, FL, and spent my younger years between Tampa and St. Petersburg going to Catholic school including St. Pete Catholic High School. I moved to Pensacola with my parents when I was 13. So, I have spent most of my life in the beautiful panhandle. Minus brief stints away for school, I have spent about 22 years in the Pensacola area and 6 years in the Destin area. Both of my children (Lauren 18 years old and Emerson 4) have grown up in this amazing area.

What is your profession and what led you to choose it?

Interesting question! I received a Doctorate Degree in Nurse Anesthesia Practice, DNAP. I have been in the medical profession since 2007, where I spent most of my time in hospital ORs or ICUs. Then in 2014 I realized my love for aesthetics, thanks to two great friends Chris Crawly and Jerry Drinkard (Skin & Tonic). I dabbled in it for several years but never thought that it would be a full-time profession, since I loved anesthesia so much. In 2019 I opened Renew Aesthetics & Anti-Aging Clinic in downtown Fort Walton Beach. I now work full time in aesthetics and love everything I do and how rewarding it is to make people feel better about themselves. What are some of your favorite things about Destin?

I love that everywhere you look you seem to see the beautiful water of the Emerald Coast. I am blessed to be able to look at something so amazing daily. The schools in the area are great, the community is fairly large but de nitely small enough to feel like you have known people forever.

Three words that best describe you. Resilient, Hardworking, Loving.

Favorite places for going out?

I’d have to say Boshamps, the food is great and there is always something for the kids to do. We love going to the local farmers markets and of course we love the beach.

Finish this statement. I AM Destin because… I live and work in this community, my oldest daughter graduated from NWF and my youngest is still in school here. My family and myself have become integrated in the community and we are lucky to call this area home. I have opened and built a business in the community, in doing so I have developed many great relationships and lifelong friendships.
