Give freely to those in need.

We are shocked and saddened to learn of the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian, and we send our sincere sympathy to the families and friends who have experienced such a loss following this terrible storm. I know the generous people of the Emerald Coast will step up immediately with help as we have done in the past. Please follow our social media pages as we will promote ways to support our Florida neighbors to the south.

In our October issue, you will nd coverage of 17 of the area’s most prominent local events, United Way 40 Under Forty announcement, the much-anticipated 2023 Best In Destin Ballot, and more. Each year the categories in the ballot are changed up so hop on our website vipdestinmagazine.com, review the list, and nominate your favorite local business starting on October 10. Then vote for them in as the Best In Destin on the nal ballot in November. PSSST nominate your own business the rst day to ensure the correct address and spelling of your name.

Fall is welcomed as people travel great distances to see colorful changing leaves, smell fresh fodder, and consume caramel apples at local fairs. Over the years I have had more than my share of hot chocolate around a bon re, so I look forward to the cooler temperatures and the warm waters at the beach. October is one of my favorite months on the Emerald Coast.

I enjoyed my summer vacation in the Rocky Mountains; however, I missed some fun here at home and am enjoying many local events by reading about them in the pages of VIP Destin Magazine. Our editorial team along with our photographers presented us with a couple of well-attended business networking events, fundraisers such as Wiggin’ Out for a Cause and the 20th annual Charity Golf Classic, a fun evening with Jeremy Jordan, and more.

Our mainstay features are attractive this month as well. I loved the organization station in Destin Style while Coastal Cuisine entertains some great ideas for power foods – because we all need those. I Am Destin this month, Andre Drevinskas, is a very impressive and remarkable person who started his business career while attending UWF.

Since it is our Power Players issue, it is very appropriate to showcase on our cover two of our favorite and very prominent citizens – Bernard Johnson and Neko Stubble eld. They each do so many things to make our community a better place.

In closing, I add a few tips on helping a community after a natural disaster such as Ian. Get involved with local fundraising drives supporting reputable nonpro ts such as The Red Cross, send money, donate goods, and most importantly give blood and volunteer to help with cleanup.

If you know of a non-pro t or charity hosting an event you would like to see featured in VIP Destin Magazine, please call me. Our mission is to support as many non-pro t causes as possible.

Thank YOU for reading VIP Destin Magazine; please be kind, courteous, and shop local.

Be on the lookout for our VIP Destin Ambassadors, Joe & Lea Capers, at area events.

Founded in 2007, Alaqua Animal Refuge has grown from a 10-acre ranchette to a sprawling 100 acre no-kill facility. With staff ranging from animal care technicians to adoption coordinators, Alaqua has helped nd homes for thousands of animals. Additionally, Alaqua has programs that serve all walks of life by fostering furry companionship. However, with a monthly operating budget of over $150,000, Alaqua also has a vigorous fundraising program to keep its mission going, and for the rst time since the pandemic, Alaqua held an in-person event on September 15 at Vin’tij in Miramar Beach.

Founder, Laurie Hood, excitedly shared how much this event meant to the community and to Alaqua. “Today is our rst fundraiser in 2 years...we are so excited to be out again and have this luncheon at Vin’tij with so many great supporters and new members of our tribe. We are having this luncheon and calling it The Difference Makers because one phrase that is resonating with me throughout the years is the difference maker. That’s what I aspire to be and that’s what so many people on our team aspire to be, so we invited the community to join us and be a difference maker for animals.”

To support Alaqua’s mission of being a leading advocate for all animals, to maximize the healing power animals have on the human spirit and to provide shelter, safety, and second chances to animals in need, the Difference Makers event featured a silent auction with prizes ranging from art, wine and dinner, to an Alaqua animal encounter themed birthday party. With a sold out and excited crowd, Alaqua’s rst in person fundraiser in 2 years was de nitely one for the books.

36TH ANNUAL

Take a Kid Fishing Day Auction

When there’s a party going on downstairs at Harbor Docks, everyone knows that means a community event is underway. August 27 was no exception, as generous community members gathered to bid on items to raise money for the Harbor Docks’ annual Take a Kid Fishing Day coming up in November.

“We enjoy doing it,” Harbor Docks owner Charles Morgan said of the fundraising event. “These auctions have provided a lot of things for the community over the years such as the YMCA swimming pool and the track at Destin Elementary School.”

This year marks the 36th Annual Charity Auction Harbor Docks has hosted, and the 27th year the Destin restaurant has set aside a day to take local children shing.

“When we started these charity events there were not very many in the area,” Morgan said. “We’ve been taking kids shing for what seems like forever. That’s what we do. We give back to the community through Take a Kid Fishing Day and our free lunch event on Thanksgiving.”

The Next Big Thing

The Walton Area Chamber opened its two-day symposium at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa on September 6. Coined ‘The Next Big Thing’, the mission of the Chamber’s annual event is to address topics bene cial to empowering individuals professionally and personally, grow emerging and existing entrepreneurs, and help create rising leaders.

Presented by Ascension Sacred Heart, and with three distinct growth tracks ranging from leadership to women in business, speakers from all walks of life converged on the Hilton to teach, mentor, and encourage young entrepreneurs and established leaders. After opening remarks from Megan Harrison, President and CEO of Walton Area Chamber of Commerce, and Bryan Walrath, President of Ascension Sacred Heart, the stage was set for day one’s keynote speaker: Tony Pollard. Drawing from stories involving his family, Tony opened his keynote by sharing his grandmother’s dying words: “Be unstoppable.” As Tony described it, being unstoppable means having a purpose and being driven. However, purpose doesn’t just happen. “You have to put in the work to achieve your goals and desires,” said Tony. By using stories, images, music, and audience involvement Tony impressed upon the group that, “People who are passionate, do things in a different way.” He continued, “When you are passionate you never give up. You deal with the pain, you overcome the odds, all because you are unstoppable.”

Business Before Hours

The Destin Chamber of Commerce met at the Emerald Grande for their Business Before Hours meeting on September 9. With a sold-out crowd, the room was poised for the morning’s presentations.

September’s sponsor presentation was given by Cameron Rowe, CEO and President of CRC Data Technologies. Founded in 1992, CRC provides the Emerald Coast with services ranging from security training to hosted VoIP. Sharing stories about ransomware and breaches that went undetected for six months, Cameron noted that while companies used to be less vigilant, the times have changed. “As more services move to the cloud, we are seeing more concerns over security,” said Cameron.

The event continued with a nonpro t presentation by the Rotary Club of Destin which reminded everyone that, “Rotary is about humanitarian aid,” and before the main topic the program nished off with the presentation of the Businessperson of the Month to Magda Cooper, Co-founder of BOTE.

Shane Moody, President and CEO of the Chamber, opened the main presentation by going over some highlights of the Florida Sunshine law and the rules for the public presentations by the two candidates for the Destin mayoral race: Rodney Braden and Bobby Wagner. Each candidate was allowed ve minutes for opening remarks, then the candidates were given several questions which ranged from the relationship between the city and the Chamber to what they would do to change the city. Since the candidates were not in the same room, there was no debate, just answers straight from the candidate. Closing out the meeting, Shane brought everyone full circle by listing upcoming events and then the presentation of the door prizes.

Boardroom on the Green

The game of golf is often thought of as a game for the wealthy and powerful, which begs the question, did players start o wealthy and powerful when they started playing golf, or did playing golf make them wealthy and powerful? It’s been recommended (jokingly) that golf lessons should be a “course” requirement when getting a Master of Business Administration (MBA) as so much business is conducted on the golf course.

And while the game of golf is largely known as being great for physical fitness, relaxation, and challenging your brain, it’s also quite an asset in the business world.

Much like the topic of our Swizzle section in this issue, scotch whisky, golf got its start in Scotland.

There is no word on if the two are related, although I’d bet the entire caddy swim day that maybe, somehow, one has something to do with the other.

However, according to experts, on the Eastern Coast of Scotland players started attempting to hit a round pebble with bent sticks or clubs, with the goal of getting the pebble over dunes and down tracks. During the 15th century, the game took o and became a favorite pastime, although it caused quite a problem when Scotland, who was facing another possible invasion, had residents shucking o their military training in favor of playing golf. The Parliament, knowing that you can’t win a war by golf alone, was forced to ban the sport. Although the ban was broadly ignored, and players continued to sharpen their skills. In 1502 King James IV of Scotland, an avid golfer, gave the sport the royal nod of approval and the game of golf became “par for the course” in Scotland. Throughout the 16th century, golf made its way through Europe with King Charles I bringing it to England and Mary Queen of Scots introducing the game to France while she was studying there. The first rules for golf were recorded in Edinburgh in 1744, however, the first standardized rules weren’t put into place until 1899. The game became popular in America around that same time and by 1900 there were around 100 golf clubs throughout the country.

Golf has always played a role in the business world, and with good reason. Where else do you get four or so uninterrupted hours with a potential client? Lunch meetings only last as long as lunch and are frequently disrupted with restaurant sta and other distractions, while boardrooms can be stu y and impersonal. Golf courses not only provide that continuous time but it’s also in a relaxed and more casual environment. Business talk can easily be intertwined with small talk about sports and other light topics, creating a pressurefree atmosphere. Participants get to know each other better as well; appreciation and admiration of a fellow player’s skills can be formed in the best of games and respect can be earned in how a player deals with frustration in the

worst of games. While business deals aren’t always closed on the golf course, they are certainly started. The rapport built amongst players is important to develop a trusting relationship between parties. Often, a round of golf leads to a round of drinks which leads to a round of negotiations and a successful business deal.

It’s not just businesses that can benefit from the golf course. Sixteen of the past nineteen United States Presidents have been golfers, for both enjoyment of the game and for networking. In fact, Lyndon Johnson is credited with using friendly games of golf to get the Civil Rights Act of 1964 successfully passed. While George W. Bush was an avid golfer, like his father, he rarely played during his presidency so as not to be disrespectful to deployed active-duty service people.

Whether your goal is to move forward in your career in business or politics, or you just like the game, golf is a wellrounded test of skill and great for your health. It’s a game rich in history and tradition, with benefits that just might help your portfolio as well.

An Evening with Jeremy Jordan

Sinfonia Gulf Coast invited guests to a delightful evening of delicious food and quality entertainment on September 15. Guests arrived at Seagar’s Prime Steak & Seafood dressed to the nines, excited to hear Jeremy Jordan in a cabaret performance.

Jordan is a Tony and Grammy-nominated singer and actor best known for his portrayal of Jack Kelly in the original Newsies on Broadway, as well as his many roles on television, including series regulars on CW’s Supergirl, NBC’s Smash and Disney’s Tangled. He has been performing solo cabarets for nearly a decade and brought his talents to the Gulf Coast for an unforgettable night.

Guests were greeted by complimentary valet service before they made their way into the restaurant for cocktail hour. They mingled and sipped wine while waiting for the performance and the mouthwatering four-course dinner Seagar’s is fondly known for. Among the crowd was Walker Rivard, who played Jack Kelly in his high school’s rendition of Newsies, eager to hear the performance.

Sinfonia Gulf Coast is a non-pro t organization committed to entertaining, educating, and inspiring the community through imaginative and innovative musical programming. Their goal is to enrich and expand the traditional orchestral experience through unique artistic disciplines and collaborations, enhancing Northwest Florida’s cultural vitality.

POWER PLAYERS IN LUXURY YACHTING

HOLLOWAY YACHT CHARTERS, LLC

Ryan Holloway OWNER contact

HERON HARBOR MARINA 314 HARBOR BLVD. DESTIN, FL 32541 850-420-1281

HOLLOWAYYACHTS.COM

You could say that Ryan Holloway of Holloway Yacht Charters saw an opportunity and went for it. Having spent time in the Destin area as a child and then vacationing in the area as an adult, Ryan knew there was a need for a five-star luxury yacht service in the area and decided to use his expertise to bring just that to Destin. While it took himself and his wife, Heather, nearly a year and a half to find the perfect yacht to start their new endeavor, once they found the Princess V72, now known as the Propensity, they knew the vessel would be a perfect fit for the luxury experience they hoped to provide with their business. Since their first charter on March 27, 2021, Holloway Yachts has taken off and continues to grow, even becoming the top charter yacht company from Texas all the way to Miami. Due to their success, they have now added a second yacht to their fleet. Along with the Princess V72, that departs out of Destin Harbor, they now operate a 58’ Neptunus out of Baytowne Marina in Sandestin. They are also excited to welcome their newest addition, expected to arrive in November, a 2023 Sportsman 302 center console. Holloway Yachts goes by the motto that, “there is no such thing as a perfect charter.” No matter how perfect a trip can seem to go, there is always room for improvement. They identify areas of improvement after every trip and always add or implement new ideas to make the trips for their clients the best they can possibly be. Ryan credits Holloway Charter’s success with not only the amazing support they have received from the city of Destin, but also the honor of being named Best In Destin as the Best New Business.

Ryan, originally from Montgomery, Alabama, has always been business minded. Previously he was the national PR Director for a hospital revenue cycle management company. He also ran computer systems and their insurance eligibility and review department for 10 years. His great grandfather started the company in 1900. It ultimately became Holloway Credit Bureau Companies (the third largest independently held credit bureau in the USA. It was Equifax for most of the Southeast) and changed its name to Holloway Credit Solutions in 2000 when the company then shifted its focus mainly to revenue cycle management. Ryan says he knows how to grow a business and make it successful. He also knows how to surround himself with the correct team to attain that goal. He says he’s comfortable taking criticism and is also able to take suggestions and implement them into the overall mission of the company.

Business isn’t the only things Ryan is passionate about as he’s part of many charitable and civic organizations, both locally and in his hometown of Montgomery. Currently he is a trustee member for the Destin Chamber of Commerce and is on the Board of Directors for the Montgomery Auburn Club and was previously on the Board for the Birdies for Babies committee for Baptist Health. Ryan is also a Priority Level 1 member of Tigers Unlimited, Auburn University’s premier scholarship donor program. And speaking of those Auburn Tigers, Ryan is not only a fourth-generation alum, but also has two children, Isabelle and James Franklin, who are currently students there. He counts himself as one of the biggest war eagle fans out there and can often be seen enjoying all Destin has to offer, proudly wearing a navy-blue Auburn visor or straw hat with the Auburn logo.

Miller, PRESIDENT contact:

TROUT BRANCH DRIVE | FREEPORT,

Mike Miller, President of Specialty Roofers Inc., is proud of the fact that’s he’s worked from the bottom up in the roofing business. He and business partner, Cole Bakker, decided in 2011 to start their own roofing company after having worked together previously. They started Specialty Roofers Inc. (SRI), with one crew, one project manager, and an o ce manager, Cathy Reeves. Since then, Mike and his company have seen their business grow far beyond what they’d even hoped. SRI now has 0 employees, and the company has purchased state-of-the-art metal fabrication equipment. They are now operating a full-service metal shop and have even started a service department dedicated to addressing service and repair needs. Mike credits his company’s success with having a good business plan from the start, and most importantly, his team of loyal employees who know he installed roofs well before he owned a roofing company and is passionate about the business. According to Mike, the biggest challenge he and his company faces is finding skilled laborers, and believes more vocational schools would help the upcoming generations learn and take pride in having a trade.

Mike, a native of Yellow Springs, hio, joined the Air orce right out of high school before returning to his hometown where he started working for his father’s roofing company and spent the next ten years learning the business. In 200 he made a big move and made Destin his home. When Mike is not out enjoying the great beaches, fishing, and small-town vibes, you can find him giving back to the community. SRI is active with Habitat for Humanity, participates in food drives, and tries to give at least two new roofs a year to families in need. He says one of his favorite things about the area is the military appreciation the community shows, a cause important to him as both he and his father are veterans.

Destin For Success

The Emerald Coast Big Game Fishing Club (ECBGFC) held the 1st Annual Destin For Success fundraiser at Legendary Yacht Club on September 8. Founded to pave the way for opportunities that young anglers need, along with the opportunities that novice and expert anglers crave, and already supporting the Destin High School Fishing Class, the yacht club was proud to be the host for this inaugural event.

After attending an Emeril Lagasse fundraiser in Ft. Lauderdale, Harley Van Hyning with Gnarly Fish Prints shared the idea for an arts-related fundraiser with Crystal LaFosse, founder of ECBGFC, and it was a go. Sharing his love for creativity and encouraging others to pursue their passion, Harley stated that their goal for the evening was to, “raise 50 thousand dollars: 10 thousand each for 5 area high school students in Okaloosa and Walton counties.” Supported by the Emeril Lagasse Foundation and having acquired donations ranging from Argentinian hunting and shing trips and shing prints to local ne dining, attendees were treated to raf es and silent auctions, while they enjoyed sushi and a charcuterie table.

Office Vibes

Anyone who’s worked from home knows that to be successful you must have a good workspace. While we all made it work during Covid, managing to get everything (well, most things) accomplished with a makeshift home o ce while dogs and kids ran around, forcing us to take a break every 3 minutes to address issues brought on by said dogs and kids, it doesn’t have to be that way. A home o ce can be your sanctuary, the space where you can be professional, productive, and comfortable while still creating your own ambiance and showing o your personal style.

Vibe Check - Finding the vibe and atmosphere you’re looking for in a home o ce can bring out your best self and put you in the right brain space to get your work done promptly and e ciently. Is calm, beachy decor more conducive to putting you in a productive mindset? Maybe a grand, traditional style o ce will get those power play ideas churning? Or maybe you’re looking for something in between. Choosing a vibe and following through with décor and furniture can bring the continuity that our modern, overstimulated brains so desire.

Colors of Success - After you choose the vibe you want for your home o ce, finding the perfect paint color is the next step. Taking your idea and finding a color to match the feeling you want your space to have will set the stage for your sanctuary. This will be your blank canvas, so to speak, to build upon and create the workspace that will motivate you and make you focused and successful. Deep colors are perfect for more traditional home o ces while light and airy colors work for more relaxed, coastal vibes.

Organization Station - Organization is vital to being successful while working from home. I mean, how can you complete a report if you can’t find the report.

Having a good desk and filing system that fits your color scheme will help with staying organized and keeping the style and vibe you want in your home o ce. To ensure your area doesn’t get overcome with clutter, think drawers, drawers, and more drawers. You can’t have too many spaces where things can be neatly organized and tucked away, o surfaces and easy to find when you need them. With all the options available these days, finding furniture to go with your home o ce vision should be as easy as your morning commute to “work.”

Furniture that fits well in your space and can be placed where you can be most productive is also important. Some people work best with a nice view out a window, perfect for soaking up the outdoor energy and inspiring creativity, while others do their best work with their desk facing a wall, like a child in timeout, free of distractions and anything that can misdirect attention away from the work at hand.... or so I’ve heard.

Zooming Along - Zoom and other similar apps have changed the way we do business. There is no need to go into the o ce anymore for those important meetings, you can be present without actually being present. Before you dive right into those video calls, you may want to put your best face forward by making sure your background is professional, neat, and free of distractions. Set up a clutter free bookshelf, or a classic print that won’t divert the attention from the important point you’re trying to make or the fabulous idea you have. After all, just because you have gym shorts on with your blazer, doesn’t mean your background has to show anything other than the mature professional you are.

VOLUNTEER HEALTH NETWORK

Restorative Dental Clinic Unveiling

The Children’s Volunteer Health Network (CVHN), founded in 2005 as a faith-based nonpro t, works to improve the health of children in Okaloosa and Walton Counties. On August 27 the new CVHN mobile dental clinic was unveiled to the public at the park in Grand Boulevard.

With partners such as the Destin Wine Charity Auction Foundation, CVHN runs 2 mobile dental clinics, and as of 2021 has provided over 6 million dollars in services to over 75,000 area children. “For over 17 years, CVHN has been working towards eliminating barriers to accessible and affordable dental care for children. Our team partners with schools and organizations to take our mobile clinic into the communities that have the greatest need,” said Dr. Iysha Cawthorn. She continued, “1 out of 5 children who walk through our doors require urgent dental treatment. With the addition of our new restorative mobile dental clinic, and myself, a full-time pediatric dentist on staff, we are blessed with the opportunity to not only provide preventative dental care, but also address the urgent dental treatment of the children in our community who may not have the opportunity to receive care elsewhere. We appreciate the generous support of our donors. Without them, this new mobile clinic wouldn’t be possible. As they walk alongside us in our mission, they provide the support we need to reach those who need treatment the most.”

The excitement of summer at HarborWalk Village came to an end with the Arts & Drafts signature event on September 2. While the day was hot, the cool drinks and shade brought out hundreds of people to enjoy music by Stormfolk and one last summer stroll.

HarborWalk Village Marketing Manager, Kelsey Plant, shared some thoughts regarding the event. “Arts & Drafts serves as the perfect transition from summer to fall. We enjoy having visitors from far and wide alongside our local community enjoying this event.” As an all-ages event, this cultural event featured local artists displaying their crafts in openair tents along the colorful HarborWalk Village walkway. Artisan goods included handmade leather pieces, jewelry, and customizable skateboards. Attendees were also able to show off their craftsmanship as the Village encouraged guests to display their skills on a portion of the pavement that was closed off for a community art project. And of course, attendees were able to visit the many shops lining the Village walkway.

The other half of Arts & Drafts event were several local breweries showing off their craft brews. Available samples included brews from Odd Pelican Beer Company, Oyster City Brewing, and Props Craft Brewery & Taproom. Uniquely drawing people in was the Lily Photo Bus where, not only could you get your photo taken, but you could also sample a draft from one of the taps built into the 70’s era van.

CELEBRATING A DECADE OF DREAMS

An Enchanted Evening

Many supporters of the theater came together September 16 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the beloved Emerald Coast Theatre Company. In an event dubbed “An Enchanted Evening,” guests arrived at the Grand Boulevard location and were greeted by a complimentary glass of champagne from Vin’tij Food and Wine. They made their way up the staircase to a magical experience.

Emerald Coast Theatre Company transformed their space into an enchanted garden right out of a storybook. Guests, dressed in their best whimsical attire, enjoyed cocktail hour featuring hors d’oeuvres from Tommy Bahama, a photo booth, and string music courtesy of The Seaside Style. Breathtaking oral arrangements donned the tables courtesy of Rose & Co. Flowers.

After a special thank you to the theater owners, Nathanael and Anna Fisher, guests enjoyed a delicious four-course meal from Bitterroot.

Once they enjoyed their meal over friendly conversation and live music, people made their way around the room as they browsed the silent auction items. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event went back to the theater and their mission to enrich and entertain the Emerald Coast community through professional and educational theater.

ECTC is a non-pro t organization overseen by a board of directors. To raise money, they accept individual donations, have a VIP membership program, put on fundraising events, and partner with local businesses as sponsors. And of course, you can buy tickets to their shows! The professional season starts at the end of September and goes to the middle of May with six professional and three productions for children. ECTC also organizes additional special events like the StoryTeller series, Cabaret on the BLVD, Comedy Nights, and many other one night only events.

Bee The

C a n g e

One Hopeful Place hosted the 2nd Annual Bee the Change Donation Drive on September 17. “Bee The Change is an event to bring the community together with people from all walks of life to show a common ground,” said Ta’ki Brown, One Hopeful Place Community Advocate Volunteer. Ta’ki continued, “This is an opportunity to donate to the community to make a change, because at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about: being the change you want to see.”

With a mission to be the front door to permanent housing and to end the cycle of homelessness, the eight-acre One Hopeful Place is the primary homeless shelter in Okaloosa County. Serving men and women, the shelter has served dozens of people who are trying to get their lives back on track. As a fundraiser for its “Cold Night Program,” Bee The Change saw people bringing water, food, cleaning products, and toiletries. Southern Yankee Queen cooked up a storm while music played outside.

Power Players For Your Plate

Most of us are doing our best to take good care of our minds and bodies and we are fortunate here along the Gulf Coast, as we have almost everything it takes to do just that -- right outside our doors. Our minds can be calmed by the waves and tides of the water, we have wonderful, diverse communities that bring out the best in us. The beautiful outdoors energizes us to bike and hike along miles of coastal beaches with weather that allows us to enjoy these resources most of the year, we just won’t discuss those couple months where we think we’re going to melt into the abyss. The Gulf Coast also provides us with foods that give our bodies the nutrients and the energy needed to be our best, most powerful selves.

Okra Yeah, I said it, okra! Okra is the power food no one wants to talk about, unless it’s fried and dipped in ranch dressing of course, then it is not only talked about, it is ordered...a lot! While okra isn’t the typical cash crop you’d think of from this area, such as peanuts or satsumas, okra grows very well here, especially during the hot summer months.

Okra is not only a great addition to your gumbo, but also a powerful addition to your diet. It is low in calories and high in nutrients -- just what the doctor ordered. Okra contains antioxidants that help protect your brain from symptoms of aging as well as having a gel like substance, known as mucilage, that once you get past the name, can help lower your cholesterol and help prevent heart disease. It also contains anti-cancer properties, can lower your blood sugar, and all the folate is an excellent addition to a pregnant woman’s diet.

Blueberries My family has a fantastic tradition of taking healthy and nutritious blueberries and making cheesecake with them -- a tradition I doubt we’ll stop anytime soon, but one that comes easily as blueberries are a favorite food and grow very well in our local climate. Of course, that wasn’t always the case, the Florida blueberry industry hit a wall in the 1920’s when growers found the climate wasn’t a good match for commercial growing. This changed when a University of Florida professor came up with a low-chill blueberry breeding program that allowed the healthy berries to thrive in the North Florida climate. Blueberries are basically power foods, in a tiny, delicious mini fruit. With antioxidants that help brain function and protect your cells, they can also help prevent UTI’s and lower your risk of diabetes. These perks, plus being low in calories and high in fiber, make blueberries an underrated, often overlooked super food, whether you eat them plain or in a delicious (umm, not exactly nutritious) cheesecake.

Oysters Oysters are the bounty of the Gulf. These unsuspecting crustaceans o er not only an economic boost to the area, they o er a shell-full of health benefits too. Scientists believe oysters have been around since the beginning of time, literally. They’ve been adored and eaten from as far back as the ancient humans to the Roman Empire and to modern times, at bars and restaurants along the Gulf Coast and throughout the country.

Oysters are protein powerhouses and packed with vitamins and nutrients, including zinc -- a mega immune supporter. They are low in carbs, fat, and calories and are high in Omega 3 fatty acids that help keep your heart healthy. The high iron content of oysters means they’re a great choice for those who su er from anemia, which can make you feel fatigued and weak. In fact, studies show humans absorb nearly three times as much iron from animal foods than plant-based foods. And while there are other alleged benefits to making oysters part of your diet, this is a family publicaton so we’ll skip over those.

Oranges Believe it or not, Northwest Florida can be a great place to grow certain kinds of oranges. While not all oranges can handle those couple of blustery days of winter we have, some oranges, like satsumas, are nutritious, delicious power foods that can thrive in our climate. In fact, Jackson County once declared itself the Satsuma capital of the world with about 23,000 acres of orchards. Unfortunately, hurricanes, freezes, and World War II negatively a ected the crop and 1923 went down in history as the heyday of oranges in the area. Today, oranges are grown on a smaller scale here, but the benefits are just as large.

Health benefits of oranges are more widely known than most other foods on the power players list. With huge amounts of vitamin C, they’re the go-to to crank up your immune system and help lower your blood pressure. The antioxidants protect your cells from damage and helps with wound healing while the thiamin from the vitamin B can lower your risk of developing cataracts, your eyes will thank you. Oranges are another food that benefits pregnant women as the large amounts of folate helps with fetal development.

YP Speed Networking Event

Ever networked speed-dating style? The Destin Young Professionals had the process down to a science on September 6 at The Edge Sky Bar in Destin. About 40 professionals under the age of 40 mixed and mingled with only one minute to share their skills and careers. Laughter and tasty food added to the fun as “couples” met to

discuss their professional compatibility.

“It’s just a fun way to connect all the young professionals in the Destin area in a speeddating type format,” said Destin YP President, Bobby Parker. “We did this last year, and it was a huge success, we were able to connect a lot of the local YP’s together who may have never met before.”

As the event ended, everyone handed out their business cards; some ready to launch into a new partnership, and others happy to have made professional connections. Destin Chamber of Commerce CEO Shane Moody facilitated the event, encouraging YP’s to join the Chamber to experience the bene ts that come along with being a member.

Emerald Coast Harley Davidson was bustling with children’s activities on Saturday, September 10. From bouncy houses and face painting to lawn games and hair styling, and of course the main event, big scoops of ice cream! The event was a community day and fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida (BBBSNWFL), a mentorship program that pairs children with vetted adults to make a positive in uence on the future of our community.

“In Okaloosa and Walton Counties we have about 60 kids matched with Bigs,” said BBBS Chairmen Rique Gwin. “However, we have roughly 60 kids still on a waiting list. Our challenge is to nd men and women who are willing to be Bigs for long-term mentoring with a young person, so that’s really our goal for this event.”

At the event, several Bigs enjoyed the afternoon with their paired Littles. Smiles and laughter were all around, especially when Captain Billy Bowlegs 67 and the Queen of Bowlegs rolled in to hand out tiaras, beads, and eye patches to all the children.

Imaginestepping back in time to an 80’s high school prom night. That was the scene at Shoreline Church in Destin on September 22 when the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center put on a unique event to raise money for children in need.

In its sixth year, Wiggin’ Out for a Cause was a night of fun, with food and drinks, music and dancing, and a silent auction. Shoreline Church was decked out in prom-style decor with a red carpet leading guests inside. Party-goers donned brightly-colored wigs and their most eye-catching prom attire.

Some guests purchased VIP tickets which included a designer wig and admission to the preparty before the rest of the guests arrived. The event, which was started in 2015 by Veila Lala, is normally women-only. This year, men were encouraged to attend with their prom dates.

The Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center is a non-pro t organization founded in 1998. They put on events like this to raise funds for their mission -- to empower the communities of Okaloosa and Walton counties to address child abuse through collaborative intervention, prevention education and awareness.

It may not have felt much like fall on the sunny Sunday afternoon behind Brotulas Seafood House and Steamer, but even in the blazing sun, a crowd almost 900 strong came out to vote on the best burgers, bourbon, and beer in the area on September 24. This was the second annual Burgers, Bourbon, and Beer Festival, benefiting Boys and Girls Club of the Emerald Coast; and like most good things, the popularity has grown.

“We love partnering with them,” Brotulas Co-Founder Chris Ruyan said of the Boys and Girls Club. “We love their vision, and we love what they are doing for the youth of the area.”

Eleven local restaurants, breweries, and bourbon makers came out this year to serve up their wares and see who would win over the judges and who would be named the crowd favorite. Judges’ choice of best overall burger bite went to East Pass Seafood and Oyster House, while the People’s Choice first place went to the Boys and Girls Club of the Emerald Coast.

Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast’s

20th Annual Charity Golf Classic

In1984 the Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation was formed to be the fundraising arm of the Ascension Sacred Heart Health System. On September 23, the award-winning Burnt Pine Golf Club was the host to the Foundation’s 20th Annual Charity Golf Classic. Presented by the Howard Group, Grand Boulevard, and Silver Sands Premium Outlets, the event offered everything from music to a live auction and a “Bubbly Walkabout.”

Welcoming guests to the event was Adrienne Maygarden, President, Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation, “Today is our 20th Annual Charity Golf Classic bene ting Ascension Sacred Heart of the Emerald Coast. Our goal is to bring the community together to celebrate our great medical care, and to support and serve their local hospital.” As golfers checked in, volunteers described the event and gave directions for the festivities. Inside the club were sponsor tables, a photo booth, and auction items ranging from dinner certi cates to stays at area resorts.

After opening remarks were provided by Adrienne, who thanked the sponsors and guests, she then introduced the President of Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast, Brian Walrath. “I have been here for about 3 months and this is one of the rst great events for me to get immersed in the community.” He continued, “I am really blessed to be here and be a part of the generosity shown by the community.” Funds raised from the event are earmarked for a Siemens Somatom Drive CT scanner. Supporting both pediatric and adult patients, this state-of-the art scanner provides 4-D resolution for better detection and more accurate diagnostics.

Andre Drevinskas

What is your hometown and how did you end up on the Emerald Coast?

I was born and raised in Lithuania. While in college, I took an opportunity to travel to the US for a college program, where Chicago was the rst place of residence. Six months later I moved to Destin to pursue my education at UWF.

What is your profession?

I started a limousine company while I was a student at UWF. After graduating with a degree in Economics and Finance I focused on growing my business. The transportation company grew and currently operates in 3 different states. Over the years, other opportunities came along and I ventured out into different businesses, such as automotive services, restaurants, and real estate investments.

What are some of your favorite things about Destin?

We love the beach and calm, family-oriented lifestyle. Beautiful sunsets at the beach, gol ng, and riding trails at Point Washington are a few things we enjoy the most.

Favorite places for going out?

Sunday Brunch at Emeril’s, following a relaxing time on a boat to grab some sushi at Harbor Docks and to nish a day at Boshamps sounds like a perfect day to me.

What is one thing that you do not go a day without?

De nitely coffee.

Finish this statement. I AM Destin because… I love the town and community that I’ve been a part of for over 20 years. It made me the person I am today, and I am proud to call it home.
