Eat, Pray, Love

Sometimes a word or phrase sticks in your mind and will not leave. As I looked through the events and editorial for this issue, the title of a book and movie came to mind - Eat, Pray, Love. Years back, a friend suggested this read when I needed some inspiration. The story is of a woman’s travels as she searches for peace after weathering a divorce. She crosses Italy, where she learns to enjoy food again and India, where she regained her spirituality. While searching for balance in her life, she fell in love in Indonesia. The book was very enlightening, and the movie, starring Julie Roberts, was romantic and funny at times. This is an eye-opener if you want an excellent read on one of these cooler fall days.

Why did my mind go to that book? Pages and pages of events centering around food await you. WSRE Food & Wine Classic, Taste of Gulf Breeze, Farm to Table, and the Arrogant Steak Cookoff, just to name a few. While attending events, whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner, my heart is always happier when the speaker asks for a blessing of the meal. During the gatherings to raise money for charities and non-pro ts, I see the spreading of love between people working for the more signi cant cause. Eat, Pray, Love.

In late September, I accepted an award on behalf of VIP Pensacola that will forever remain on the desk. As a magazine, we are invited to numerous events each month. When Sherriff Simmons personally delivered my invitation to the rst annual Black Tie & Boots Engagement Awards, I thought it was a media thank you dinner. So, imagine my surprise that VIP Pensacola was the only media to receive one of the 12 awards given to local businesses for supporting and promoting the Escambia County Sherriff Foundation! We are, of course, very proud to support the foundation as well as other local nonpro ts. We give hundreds of editorial pages annually to promote non-pro ts through their fundraisers and events, and I personally attend as many of these events as possible. It was exhilarating to be recognized for our efforts to help grow the Sherriff’s Foundation in 2022. When you read the article, that’s me glowing proudly in the photos.

If all of that was not enough, in October, VIP Pensacola was named Small Business of the Month by the Pensacola Chamber. Our hearts are full, and we are so proud to have a platform to share all of the great things going on in our community.

Each month I close by asking for submissions from non-pro ts or charities holding events that you would like to see featured in VIP Pensacola. Our mission at VIP Pensacola is to support as many non-pro t causes as possible in each issue.

Black Tie & Boo ENGAGEMENT AWARDS

The inaugural Black Tie & Boots Engagement Awards, presented by the Escambia County Sheriff Foundation, was held on September 30 at Live Oak Plantation. Sheriff Chip Simmons has garnered partners locally that have stepped up and offered their support for the Sheriff’s Of ce’s, the Black Tie & Boots Engagement Awards are a way to honor those partners.

Sheriff Simmons presented awards to various individuals and businesses that share in his cause to create bright futures. When asked about the Black Tie & Boots Engagement Awards, Sheriff Simmons remarked, “It was a perfect way to acknowledge those that have pushed our engagement opportunities to levels never before seen and helped us to reinforce their continued commitment to our shared community.”

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Foundation stepped in to assist with funding the event. The Foundation sold 250 raf e tickets to win one of three fabulous prizes donated by various businesses in our community, with the grand prize provided by Bere’ Jewelers. This event generated over $10,000 to put towards future engagement efforts within Escambia County.

and staff pulled out all the stops for the 32nd Annual Food and Wine Classic, held on October 15 with hundreds of food and wine enthusiasts in attendance! Locals, as well as out of towners, thoroughly enjoyed the evening under perfect weather conditions, enjoying cuisine from 12 well-known local chefs. Attendee Debbie King Kenney noted, “This is my favorite wine and food event.” Alejandra Ramos, host of PBS’s The Great American Recipe, was

on hand sampling, judging, and tasting all the wonderful food and admiring all the presentations. The 2022 Food and Wine Classic celebrated Hispanic heritage with Latin America and Caribbean cuisine. Tables and chairs were provided for everyone to relax and enjoy the sounds of great music from Nobius. The grounds at the SCI building were the perfect location for the walkabout wine and food tasting. This event is an annual fundraiser for WSRE, the area local public broadcasting service.

Sacred Hart Movie Trailer Premier Day

TheSacred Hart Movie Trailer Premier Day took place at Court of De Luna Event Space on September 25. With over 700 in attendance, the entire venue was packed with actors, extras, and supporters for this historic event. This private screening will help bring Pensacola into the national spotlight, not only for the amazing talent in the movie, but also for the vision of the director, Elrico Tunstall. Sacred Hart was lmed entirely in Pensacola, and for Tunstall, this is his chance to showcase his hometown. “We were losing so much talent to Atlanta and surrounding areas because there was no outlet here, but with my management company (Manager of the Year Talent Management, LLC) also being an Actors Corp to train, it allowed for a sense of stability to be established in Pensacola for the Arts,” stated Tunstall.

Tunstall is a two-time war veteran who served in the United States Army. “After 10 years of being home from the military, I have built up this company by booking actors on professional movie sets. Now, after learning and growing in the entertainment industry, I have produced Pensacola’s rst feature lm, Sacred Hart…actors were used from all over the Gulf Coast, so it is made up of a diverse cast, and over 20 businesses and locations were used,” Tunstall said.

The movie is about an African America family that owns and operates a ctional hospital in Pensacola, Tunstall is seeking to turn it into a series.

TheGreater Pensacola Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting for Next Level Oxygen Hyperbaric MedSpa on September 29. Chamber members and guests mingled and enjoyed delicious nger foods and drinks. Curvy Ms. America United States, Tonya Lied-Peele, was also in attendance to help celebrate the open house and ribbon cutting.

Next Level Oxygen Hyperbaric Med Spa owner, Aimee Allenback, welcomed everyone in attendance and introduced the staff. Tours were available of the facility and guests were able to learn about the services offered. Next Level Oxygen Hyperbaric MedSpa has taken over the entire building. Expanding its space means more room to offer new services, such as BrainTap brain tness and full spectrum infrared sauna treatments. Having grown up in a military family, Aimee Allenback is also committed to giving back to the military community and will be launching a new military appreciation initiative in November.

How did Feeding the Gulf Coast come about?

Feeding

the Gulf Coast is the area’s local Feeding America-af liated food bank. Feeding the Gulf Coast serves 24 counties throughout south Mississippi, south Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle by providing emergency food assistance programs and other support to nonpro t and faith-based organizations and special programs. Last year, the food bank distributed more than 27.5 million meals to those in need along the central Gulf Coast.

On September 17, 1980, Feeding the Gulf Coast, then known as Bay Area Food Bank, received the green light to open its doors. The food bank’s mission was to invest in those struggling to put food on the table daily in Baldwin and Mobile counties. Within just a few years of operation, the food bank’s service to Gulf Coast communities grew to include the Florida Panhandle. Operating from its facility in Milton since 2009, the food bank underwent an expansion project last year to better serve those facing hunger in the Panhandle.

What impact does Feeding the Gulf Coast have on the community?

On a daily basis, hunger is hidden among us. This need may reside with our child’s classmate, the clerk in the grocery store, a co-worker, or a neighbor. Food shouldn’t be an impossible choice. For many, a daily meal is just a choice of what to eat for dinner. But for people facing hunger, a daily meal poses a very different type of choice. It’s often an impossible choice between food and other critical needs such as utilities, housing, or medicine.

Throughout our service area, 1 in 6 individuals is food insecure, including 1 in 4 children. That represents more than 130,000 people who may not know where their next meal will come from. The food bank works with more than 400 partner agencies and 150 child nutrition partners to serve those in need. On average, around 100,000 individuals visit a pantry each month.

What are some future goals?

The food bank recognizes that chronic poor health and hunger can create a consequential pattern leaving individuals in a system of nutrition insecurity. Additionally, our rural service area contains pockets of low-food access where individuals face the challenges of nding healthy food at affordable prices. We are working to develop new programs that increase access to nutritious and fresh foods such as dairy and produce. We are in the process of out tting our rst mobile marketplace vehicle. This program will bring fresh foods to food deserts within our service area, along with nutrition education opportunities to help encourage better nutrition and cooking habits. We also work to establish more food-as-medicine partnerships through prescription food box initiatives and address senior hunger.

What are some challenges your organization faces?

The need remains high. The food bank has challenges nding the proper resources, whether food supply sources or enough partners to adequately meet our community’s needs. We are thankful for our current partners but always need more feet on the ground.

What events does your organization host? Are any open to the public?

We have two upcoming events next spring open to the public to get involved with. In partnership with the National Association of Letter Carriers, our biggest one-day food drive, Stamp Out Hunger, is set to take place on May 13, 2023. We are also the bene tting charity of The MAX Volleyball Tournament on May 21, 2023. We are in the process of securing sponsors and teams for anyone who wants to participate.

What is your role and how did you get involved with Feeding the Gulf Coast?

I am the President and CEO. I took on this role in the summer of 2020 during a very busy time as we were responding to impacts of the pandemic. I previously served as the Florida Branch Manager following the organization’s response to Hurricane Michael. I was at a point in life where I had accumulated signi cant for pro t business experience, and I felt I could translate that knowledge into making a difference in the community. When I learned of the opportunity with this organization, I felt it was a way to contribute positively to the community and give back through leadership of the organization.

What’s your favorite thing about being involved with the organization?

I enjoy the opportunity to develop strategies and nd new ways to improve our efforts to create impact every day. Our goal is not only to provide a meal for someone struggling today but to establish initiatives that ultimately help end hunger. So not only do I get to make a difference every day, but I do so alongside a great team of passionate individuals and community partners.

How can someone get involved and/or support your nonprofit?

Any one person can make a difference. Whether through one dollar, one donated item or one hour of time. We have opportunities available for all those interested in standing alongside us in our mission to provide hunger relief for the community and to make a difference. Volunteer opportunities include packing backpacks of food for children to have during weekends and breaks from school, packing senior boxes of supplemental food for seniors living on xed income, sorting food or even volunteering at mobile pantry distributions. VIP Cover Reveal

The Emerald Republic Brewing Company along with Sunbelt Title Agency, Rustyc Spoon Meal Design and Catering, hosted over 75 guests for the unveiling of the cover of the October VIP Pensacola “Power Players” issue, on October 5. Friends and clients of the magazine enjoyed a sneak peak of the latest issue, showcasing local events, features on local power foods, scotch, of course, the Power Players themselves, and many more exciting pages. This issue’s cover featured Dr. Charles and Nichole Blay on the red carpet at the Black Tie Ball. Featured events included 2022 Best in Pensacola Black Tie Ball, a Childhood Cancer Awareness charity event put on by American Legion Post 378 in Gulf Breeze, and First Responder Appreciation, to name just a few. The Cover Reveal offered wonderful treats from Pensacola’s Executive Chef Rusty Strain, owner of A Rustyc Spoon, a ne dining food truck. The evening ended with VIP Pensacola’s Associate Publisher Verla Price showing appreciation to attendees, thanking them all, and wishing them continued success in the future, before raf ing off door prizes that were generously donated by local businesses for the occasion.

Farm to Table Dinner & Pink Purse Auction

TheOctober Farm to Table Dinner and Pink Purse Auction at the Connell Residence in Gulf Breeze took place on October 16. The Connell family hosted this lavish sit-down meal with a spectacular water view. This was a unique, one-of-a-kind event, all for a good cause. Auction items included handbags from Kate Spade, Coach, and Louis Vuitton, and many more items to help raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness. Kristine Connell opened her beautiful home, and the setting was warm and picture perfect under a lighted tent and chandeliers. Over 50 guests were on hand to enjoy the dinner provided by The Cutting Board in Milton. The dinner consisted of a garden cucumber salad, corn chowder with lump crab, garlic chicken breast on a bed of sweet potato hay with a nice, braised beacon sauce, broccolini and pear tart with ice cream topping for dessert. A wine bar was also provided by Beyond the Grape, owned and operated by Roger Johnson. The fabulous duo, The Koolerators, played dinner music for the guests. The evening concluded with many items being actioned off, with the assistance by Gina Boyleston Realty and Auction.

Stamped Film Festival 2022

It was lights, action, and fun at Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Resource Center for the Stamped 10th Anniversary Dinner Gala on September 29. Stamped Film Festival provides a vibrant cultural experience to Pensacola by using the unique expression of lms with a speci c focus on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer

(LGBTQ) community to foster awareness, inclusion, and diversity. Over 150 attendees had fun while enjoying the evening, which was inspired by efforts of the LGBTQ community in the mid 1990s to highlight the impact of LGBTQ tourism.

Through incremental growth, Stamped Film Festival has become a leading presence,

promoting awareness, inclusion, and diversity throughout the Gulf Coast region. All events, including the festival, remain free of charge and open to all the public. Next STAMPED FILM FESTIVAL is coming soon to a “Little Theatre” near you, November 10-13, 2022, in beautiful downtown Pensacola, Florida.

ThePensacola Chamber of Commerce hosted Good Morning Pensacola on October 7 at the Pensacola Yacht Club. Rapid Response was the title sponsor. Many great things are happening in and around the community and guest speakers were on hand to discuss some of those. Matt Simpson introduced Bruce Vredenburg, who talked about our local businesses and how well they are doing. Also, on “deck,” was the Blue Wahoo’s play-by-play announcer/ broadcaster, Eric Bremer, and Kazoo, Wahoo’s mascot. Eric came to us last year from the Fredericksburg Nationals. Also on hand at the event was Naval Air Technical Training Center Commanding Of ce Capt. Edgardo “CHEECH” Moreno, and Executive Of ce CDR. Brandy “HARRY” McNabb. Both shared their experiences as Naval Aviators, moreover, the importance of NATTC, bringing in brand new sailors. Matt Simpson then introduced and brought to the microphone eight new members in our community of the Chamber; each brie y talked about their business. Lastly, The Great Pensacola Chamber awarded VIP Pensacola Magazine with the Small Business of the Month Award for October 2022.

Christie Costello and her husband decided to open Costello’s Butcher and Deli to help give back to their community and bring something needed to the west side of Pensacola. The idea of Costello’s was to make people feel like they are at an extension of the Costello home. They came from the restaurant side of things so making that into a store has been a lot of fun for the couple. They get to introduce a lot of things people have never tried before.

Christie is always there to encourage and show love to all her employees and customers. She puts 110% of herself into every single person she gets the chance to help. When someone comes to Christie for help, she makes sure they know she listened to them and that they can count on her. At Costello’s, they put everything they do back into the local community and local youth programs. Their goal is not for a better bottom line but to help build a better community.

Christie’s favorite part of her workday is when the children come in for the free lunch program. They are always excited to tell her about everything that is going on in their world. They bring in pictures and book reports for her to hang up on the wall at the store. She never has a bad day when they come in to see her.

When not working, since they own a butcher shop and have access to exotic meats, cheese, and wine, the Costellos love to have friends over to the house for dinner and great wine. Christie enjoys seeing people being able to try things they wouldn’t normally have a chance to try.

A fun fact about Christie: Breakfast is her favorite meal of all time!

TheGulf Breeze Chamber held the Taste of Gulf Breeze at the Gulf Breeze Community Center on September 30. This event is an exciting, competitive culinary annual adventure that brings members of the community out to enjoy great local food and beverages. VIP ticket attendees received access to an early VIP hour, VIP swag bag, VIP room with seating, and complimentary beer and wine.

The smell of tantalizing culinary delights was in the crisp fall air as samples were available from vendors and food trucks throughout the evening. Forty-nine entries were competing for the culinary titles. Guests voted for the Golden Spatula Awards as they tasted the complimentary appetizers, beverages, and desserts. A Seat at the Table for Food Raising Friends

TheCutting Board in Milton held “A Seat at the Table” for FoodRaising Friends, Inc. on October 4. This sold-out event, sponsored by Sunbelt Title Agency in Pace, included a four-course surf-and-turf dinner with dessert by Chef Steve and Nan Evans-Foster. The event was held to raise funds and awareness for FoodRaising Friends, whose mission is to increase children’s access to food through intentional relationships with school and community programs that enhance their ability to thrive. Each dinner – beer and wine included – will purchase three large bags of greatly needed nutritional food for children and families in our community. While feasting on the amazing four-course meal with FoodRaising Friends, Inc. Board of Directors, family, friends, volunteers, and donors, guests enjoyed a live art presentation from the brilliant Reese Foret and acoustic sets from the talented Hane Skot.

The give-a-ways were abundant, including the grand prize of the evening, which was a beautiful custom piece by Reese Foret. Rebecca McKeithen, founder of FoodRaising Friends, stated, “It was a wonderful night and together over 3,400 servings of meals will be provided to children and families from tonight’s event.” FoodRaising Friends works directly with schools, and program personnel providing resources to children identi ed as food insecure.

While the Gulf of Mexico offers a bounty of nutritious and tasty seafood, it also offers up some very strange creatures. Creepy creepers like the goblin shark, who, with a face only its mother could love, is appropriately named, and the Portuguese man-o-war, which is not a ellyfish ut is actually a colony of organisms that seemingly only has one lot in life, to in ict pain and torture upon any human who comes in contact with it. Sharing space with these creatures is another doozy, the vampire squid of hell (actual name), who I’m sure has a great personality but hides in the depths of the Gulf, just in case. However, there’s one creature that’s packing a blade that would make Inigo Montoya proud, the majestic swordfish

lso known as road ills, swordfish are actually a very impressive species. Starting their life as fertilized eggs in warm waters, they grow from 1/10 of an inch when hatched to three feet long in their first year y the time swordfish achieve adulthood they can reach - feet long and 1,400 pounds. They tend to be loners and aren’t often found in schools with other swordfish, this allows them to migrate as they please. And migration is important to their survival, they are comfortable in both warm and cooler waters, thanks to a concurrent heat exchange mechanism near their brain that allows them to heat their brain and eyes, this helps them hunt effectively in colder temperatures unting looks a little different for swordfish, due to their bills (or swords). Rather than using their bill to stab prey as expected, they use it to slash the prey to slow them down and turn them into delectable bite-sized pieces. Good luck outrunning these sleek, aerodynamic fish too, as they can get to a ippy miles per hour when they re feeling frisky The speed of swordfish keeps them from being snacks themselves, save for an occasional orca or mako shark.

Once hooked, these fish can go from depths of feet and shoot straight into the air, diving right back down to the depths. Sunset Cruise

ThePensacola Symphony Orchestra Guild invited guests to “sail away” with them on an amazing two-hour sunset ferry cruise on October 21. The event took place on one of the Gulf Islands National Seashore ferries, and cruised around Pensacola Bay. The Pensacola Symphony Orchestra Guild, whose main goal is to provide opportunities to connect with audiences and other communityminded individuals that share a similar love of music, set sail to provide proceeds that will bene t the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. Guests enjoyed complimentary drinks, along with appetizers, such as nger sandwiches, fruits, meats and cheeses, and delectable desserts, just to name a few. Guests were enamored with easy-listening guitar music by Arturo, who delighted them while he played and sang. Tunes such as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” prompted a few others to join in singing with him. Although the ferry had an indoor dining area, the view was outside on the many verandas, looking at the beautiful sunset. With dolphins leaping and swimming alongside, the perfect orange sunset truly took everyone’s breath away. The starlit sky, with the Pensacola Lighthouse in the background, was the stunning ending on the ride home.

OUTSIDE ESSENTIALS

My Outside Must Haves

Fall/Early Winter is here on the Gulf Coast and I am providing a simple check list of must haves. From now until late December is reliably good weather and with average temps near 70 degrees, outside is calling you. Fire and water are two of my favorite things. In my existence I desire to have both present in my outdoor space. My wife and I have occupied several di erent residences, each presenting its own unique opportunity.

1. A front porch - Why start with this? Because when I was a kid that was it. ings have changed along the path of life. People in general don’t know their neighbors and there is an undertone of fear and protection that exists in our neighborhoods. So if you have a front porch… sit on it and talk to your neighbors

2. A back patio, private courtyard, or terrace - OK, now we are talking. Privacy is nice and in contrast to the front porch where you may need to be presentable, here, not so much. Kick o your shoes and relax. Crazy busy modern life makes a sanctuary more meaningful. Breathe in some good air and listen to the birds sing. Fire up a grill and explore your culinary skills. Take in the sunset or night sky. e simpler things remind us how connected we are to our surroundings and that helps us to stay grounded.

3. A re pit - ere are hundreds of interpretations of what a re pit can be. As a kid I used to build itty bitty structures from the splinters of the wood box on the hearth of our replace and then burn them down. Ok, I am not a pyromaniac, but it was fun and after accidentally burning my skin in the process I learned the principles of re that I would later use as an adult. Modern day re pits with their instant gas ame means that we can curl up close to the ame without wreaking of smoke when we retreat to the home.

4. Water feature - Maybe it’s a pool or a spa or both. Our modern pools now can be heated or cooled which makes them accessible year-round. Of course, don’t forget the fountain. No matter the size of the space or budget, nd a fountain to incorporate into your space.

5. Sounds - e sound of the ocean, wind rustling through trees, birds singing their songs, your favorite artist playing on your outdoor speakers, or simply quiet. e hustle and bustle around you while tucked into a small private courtyard or perched discreetly above it all on a terrace can be extremely calming and comforting. I have no doubt that sounds or lack thereof are a worthy pursuit. It’s a little thing but it’s worth getting right.

6. Game Courts – Including corn hole, bocce ball, outdoor billiards, outdoor ping pong, tennis court, croquet lawn, putting green, and most recently the rise of pickleball (which can double as a basketball court). One or more of these outlets can hold your attention and entertain your family and friends. Other favorites are outdoor TVs, grills, pizza ovens, smokers, other heat sources, pergolas, fans, lounge furniture, outdoor lighting, cool misting systems, and even mosquito control systems.

How To Achieve

Take those ideas and make them yours. Hire a professional if budget allows or go at it on your own. Either way, look at it as an investment to make your life on this planet a little more enjoyable. Determine what traits make your property special and then work to exploit that quality. All spaces are not the same so this may take some time. Hire a professional to get an outside opinion with a fresh perspective. One action that can greatly bene t the process when designing/redesigning a space is to empty that space. Once all the contents that we may be emotionally attached to are not in sight we can re-imagine the space much easier.

Get rid of clutter. When creating your perfect outdoor space keep it clean and concise. Everything in that space should have a purpose for being there. Do not make your patio an inside plant restoration refuge with potted plants everywhere as you are trying to revive them. ink of the space as your resort. Whether you create a little dramatic character in the space or just keep it welcoming and friendly.

No matter where your home is located or the size, there is always a special quality that has been left undiscovered. Find it, exploit it, and reap the rewards.

Arrogant Steak Cook-Off 10th Annual

The 10th Annual Arrogant Steak Cook-Off was held October 14, on the streets of Seville Quarter. The weather was perfect, and the steaks were sizzling! The Seville Rotary Club brought this mouth-watering and much anticipated event back this year. It was presented by Winn-Dixie and bene ted several local charities and non-pro t organizations here in the Pensacola area, such as the Boys & Girls Club, Manna Food Pantries, and the Ronald McDonald House of Northwest Florida, just to name a few. Michelle Salzman, a Gold Sponsor of the event, was kind enough to present several silent auctions to further raise funds. Auction items included a Yeti cooler, a slew of gift cards from area restaurants, butcher shops and the like, and tickets for a chance to win a private party at a local hangout worth over $1,700. The Arrogant Steak Cook-Off is held annually, however, halted for the last two years, and has raised over $200k for charities since its inception. Guests were able to sample and vote on their favorite team with the tickets provided and/or cash, along with a panel of judges who awarded the top prizes. Twenty 4-person teams competed for the awards and for the bragging rights for preparing, plating, and feeding the hungry crowd with their version of New York Strips, that were graciously provided by Winn-Dixie. Additionally, beer, wine, and a full mashed potato bar with all the tasty toppings were on hand to for all to enjoy.

Signature Holiday Cocktails

The holidays are approaching with the speed of the Polar Express so it’s time to start thinking about all things holidays. Along with the gifts, the meals, the busy stores, and the stress and chaos that goes along with the festive times, we have ... holiday parties. Holiday party hosting is as dividing as politics itself, while some shudder at the thought of hosting such an event, others become giddy with excitement and happy for an excuse to buy those fancy reindeer olive picks they’ve been eyeing. While hosting a holiday party can be exhausting and not for the faint of heart, I’m firmly in the olive pick camp, I can’t get enough of it, no matter the holiday.

Of course, there are many details that go into planning your holiday party. What will the theme be? What food will you serve? How do you keep the dog

from eating everyone’s food? (Well, maybe that’s just a problem at my house.) One part of your party that shouldn’t require a lot of work is the cocktails. Having the basics is important, such as wine, beer, and options for nondrinkers, but having a signature drink for your party brings the atmosphere and sophistication up a notch and streamlines drink options for guests.

A signature drink is a unique cocktail created especially for an event, designed to reflect the nature and spirit of, not only the occasion, but also the attendees. These drinks give those indecisive or hard to please guests a solid cocktail option, as well as showing them that their host put thought, care, and effort into the evening. The best part is that signature drinks can be absolutely anything you want them to be, and while you may not be a mixologist, taking an

already great recipe and renaming it to fit the vibe you want for your party is always a great option. The drink chosen to be the signature cocktail for your party is just the start. Once you’re decided on a cocktail and given it a snazzy name, it’s on to the presentation. Seasonal colors, garnishes, and festive trim bring your drink together to ring in the holiday cheer and make your seasons bright. And don’t forget the cups or glasses that complement your choice of drink, as well as a cute sign placed next to the cocktail, letting the guests know the name and ingredients. This will not only round out the presentation but may also help to avoid a holiday party mishap, like with that one relative who becomes a little less like Santa and more like the Grinch when rum is involved.

Festive Fall Sangria

Ingredients: 1 apple 1 pear 1/2 orange 2 tablespoons sugar ½ teaspoon cinnamon 1 750ml bottle dry red wine, such as Rioja 1 750ml bottle sparkling cider or apple cider Garnishes: Cinnamon stick, rosemary sprig, remaining orange slices

Directions:

Cut the pear, apple, and orange into thin slices. Place them in a bowl and sprinkle with sugar. Add the fruit to a pitcher and pour in a bottle of red wine. Allow to stand 1 hour for the flavors to combine. When ready to serve, fill each glass half-full with sparkling apple cider or regular apple cider and top off with the red wine. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, rosemary sprig, and remaining oranges.

HolidaySeasidePunch

Ingredients: 64 ounces cranberry 100% juice blend, chilled 32 ounces pineapple juice, chilled 32 ounces ginger ale, chilled 1 750 ml bottle rum 1 orange 1 lemon Garnishes: 5-star anise, fresh or frozen cranberries, rosemary sprigs

Directions: Combine the cranberry juice blend and pineapple juice and chill. Before serving, add the ginger ale and rum to a punch bowl and combine with the chilled juice. Garnish with orange and lemon slices, cranberries, star anise and rosemary sprigs.

Chalk the Walk

Families, community members, and Capstone supporters gathered at Bayview Park for the 1st Annual Chalk the Walk Event on October 6. American Heritage Financial coordinated this family fun event to support Capstone Adaptive Learning and Therapy Center. Also participating in this inaugural event were Panda Express, Escambia High Navy JROTC, Pensacola Police and Fire Department, Fishbein Orthodontics,

Fresco Painting, LLC, Pensacola Off-Road Cyclists, Beulah Middle’s FFA, Crumbl Cookies, the Rally Foundation, and many more local businesses. Children of all ages participated in the sidewalk chalk art contest, as well as enjoyed the in atable slides and great food. Chalk the Walk was a great opportunity for the community to learn about the wonderful programs at the Capstone Adaptive Learning and Therapy Center while having a fabulous, fun- lled afternoon.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and Step One Automotive Group is on a mission to Drive Out Breast Cancer. Step One Automotive Group of Pensacola has a goal to collect 5,000 signatures on their 2022 Pink Jeep Gladiator and will be donating $1 for every signature to a local non-pro t organization supporting patients currently battling breast cancer. Sometimes simplicity is best when it comes to holiday centerpieces. I know, I know, and I may have my Southern card taken away for even writing this. Yes, sometimes simple is the way to go, especially if your cup runneth over with food and guests and space is tight. Placing small flowerpots with mums down the center of your table, or along your table runner is a simple, yet cute way to decorate for your Thanksgiving feast. Adding small pumpkins, gourds, or fall leaves around the pots gives it a fuller e ect without crowding the area. Winding some burlap, Thanksgiving fabric, or a small strand of lights around the pots completes the simple, yet sophisticated look.

Tradition Reigns

Few things are as associated with Thanksgiving as a cornucopia, besides turkey and football, of course. Traditionally, cornucopias are a symbol, consisting of a goat’s horn overflowing with flowers, fruit, and corn, that represents an abundant supply of good things. This makes the cornucopia the perfect centerpiece for Thanksgiving, a time to celebrate and be thankful for all the blessings and good things in life. Cornucopia centerpieces are easy to put together. Filling the cornucopia basket with pumpkins, grapes, corn, and other traditional fall fares makes a great centerpiece alone, adding candles and garland completes this traditional centerpiece.

The holiday decorating season is upon us and what an exciting time it is -- taking down the boxes and going through years of holiday décor, smiling at the memories the family heirlooms bring about, or congratulating yourself for buying more lights on clearance after the holidays the year before. This is a wonderful time to enjoy the festive season and reconnect with family and friends by hosting dinners and parties. On the Gulf Coast, we don’t necessarily get traditional white Christmases, but we do get Christmases with sugar white sand, which is just as good to me. However, just because we don’t have snow lightly falling and blanketing the trees during our holiday season, that doesn’t mean we can’t have a white Christmas indoors with a white and silver holiday table décor. Sticking to just a couple colors for your holiday centerpiece simplifies and streamlines the look of your table. Adding white coated greenery, or small white trees, along with silver ornaments and twinkling white lights is a classic way to have a white Christmas, without having to shovel a driveway.

Deck the Halls

You’ve heard the term “the more the merrier,” right? Well, this not only applies to party guests, gifts, and glasses of wine, this also can apply to holiday decorating. Making your table centerpiece pop with greenery, figurines, candles, and mixed media in general is a great way to show o your spirit and enthusiasm for holiday decorating. Using wooden boxes, boards, or a greenery arrangement as a base and adding accessories allows you to pile on all the holiday cheer your festive heart desires.

Festive & Functional

We all know how crowded an entertaining area can get with chatting guests, excited children, and maybe a frazzled host running around. So why not make your holiday centerpiece work for you? Combining festive with function. Filling an ornate champagne bucket with greenery or ornaments is a beautiful way to decorate and can be switched from décor to usable champagne bucket in seconds. Another fabulous way to be festive and functional is to use your dessert as a centerpiece on an elevated platter. Surround the bottom with holiday décor and you’ve got an edible centerpiece that’ll have your guests excited for the next course.

Ladies Night Out

The annual Ladies Night Out event was hosted at Woodlands Medical Specialists in Pensacola on October 6. Entering the Woodlands lobby, guests were greeted with a beautiful arbor of colored balloons and smiles from all the staff. The celebration was in honor and recognition of women’s health and wellness. Food and drinks, pampering, and many giveaways were provided. Woodlands’ physicians and associates spoke about women’s

health, topics focused on Urology, Breast Health, Gynecologic Oncology, Primary Care, and Nutrition. Woodlands Medical Specialists is the home to many medical specialists from diverse backgrounds that are connected by a common mission: To preserve the patient-doctor relationship, and also provide access to the highest quality healthcare experience in the surrounding regions.

Ribbons of Hope Charity Ball

The Ribbons of Hope Charity Ball was held on October 7 at the Pensacola Yacht Club. The event was lled with survivors, supporters, and sponsors to help provide funds for the Pensacola Breast Cancer Association (PBCA). This event is of the utmost importance because it is designed to increase awareness about early screening and diagnosis options for women and men in our local community. The Ribbons of Hope Charity Ball is also a signi cant fundraising opportunity for PBCA, a non-pro t organization, as proceeds are used to provide free mammograms at local medical facilities for the low-income and under-insured patient population in the Pensacola area. “Approximately 3,750 mammograms have been provided for individuals in need over the past 13 years with funds generated during this event and others throughout the year, so it is very important that we continue these efforts; it helps so many people,” stated PBCA Vice President Barbara Dean. This wonderful and anticipated evening included a sit-down meal consisting of salad, steamed vegetables, sh and chicken, and an array of decadent desserts. The attendees were inspired by guest speakers sharing their stories, entertained by DJ Phatchi & Co. with music from the decades, and delighted by the silent auction in anticipation of winning. Auction items and offers were provided by local and national businesses and ranged from luxury gifts, vacation packages and special items only offered during this fundraising event.

IMPACT 100 Pensacola Bay Area is pleased to announce the eleven grant recipients selected at this year’s annual meeting. These nonprofit organizations will each receive a grant of $103,820 from the members of IMPACT 100 Pensacola Bay Area.

Bob started mentoring T’Anthony at school, when he was in first grade. A few years later, Bob and Ann decided to start volunteering as a Big Duo with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida, to share the commitment and responsibility. Volunteering as a Big Duo, allows Bob and Ann to have flexibility with their schedules and work together. When Bob or Ann is unavailable or out of town, the other steps in and continues to spend time with T’Anthony. Over the past seven years, Bob and Ann have been committed to fostering, developing, and helping T’Anthony succeed. They are invested in his academic success and often help him with his homework and find fun ways to challenge him. They have also helped him explore options for college or trade schools, while helping him discover his passions. They have also introduced T’Anthony to a variety of activities such as playing sports, video games, flying drones, cooking and going to local events.

On September 22, 2022, staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters worked with T’Anthony and his grandmother, to surprise Bob and Ann with this Big of the Year award, during a Governing Board meeting. Bob and Ann were asked to give a presentation to board members on their experience volunteering as a Big Duo. Afterwards, Vice President of Programs, Krissy Smith, announced they were actually invited to the meeting to receive the award. Bob and Ann were both surprised and excited and shared this about their relationship with T’Anthony, stating: “Little experiences can make a Big Difference in the lives of Littles and Bigs!”

Bob and Ann have been outstanding mentors and members of our volunteer community, and we are so grateful to have them as part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters family and proud to present them with the 2022 Escambia County Big of the Year award.

Bread & Table Club Polo at the Point

The Bread & Table Club held their second annual fundraising event, Polo at the Point, on October 2. This event was in honor of their dear friend and B&T member, Shirlee Poulos, whose dedication, love, and passion was to help others. Shirlee was a huge proponent of the Children’s Backpack Program, and supported this cause greatly. It was a beautiful day under perfect blue sky conditions, and an excellent day for food, fun, relaxation, and of course, a polo match. Two teams took the eld with four riders each and played four “chukkas” or periods. Shelley Black noted that, “This was an amazing afternoon that wouldn’t have been possible without the help of many wonderful people!” Thanks to the excellent food prepared and provided by Namen’s Catering from Mobile, the B&T Club raised $7,200, all the proceeds, thanks to the Shirlee Poulos Foundation, will go to support the Children’s Backpack Program.

What is your hometown and how did you end up in the Pensacola area?

I was born in Geneva, New York. My parents moved to Pensacola for a job transfer when I was 1 year old. They felt like they had moved to paradise with the beautiful beaches and pleasant winters. This is my 70th year of living here.

What is your profession?

I became the owner and manager of Cordova Lanes Bowling Center after my father passed away in 2005. We opened in 1979 and here we are 43 years later. I love that I get to sell fun for a living! Our bowling center offers meeting space for community organizations. We have the Bowler’ s Edge Pro Shop, 24 lanes for bowling, Mama Onnies’ Grill, Shooter’s Sports Bar, karaoke, pool tables, darts, and lighted corn hole pads. We work with numerous nonpro t organizations in helping with their fundraising. This past year we celebrated with Junior Achievement with their 20-year Mardi Gras Bowl. We honor First Responders, blood donors, Special Olympics, and Military with discounted bowling and free shoes.

What are some of your favorite things about Pensacola?

I love the vibrant downtown. What makes us unique is that we still have the small-town vibe, yet we have a plethora of things to do here with Minor League baseball, ice hockey, two universities and now our own college football team. We can attend the symphony, the Little Theatre, concerts, art shows and festivals. We have the most beautiful beaches with access to reef diving, deep sea shing, and nearby rivers and bayous for paddle boarding, tubing, canoeing, and kayaking. We are home to the Blue Angels which provides weekly practice shows when they are in town and two major shows a year.

Three words that best describe you.

Compassionate, Generous, Genuine.

Favorite place to go out?

Downtown restaurants would be The Wine Bar on Palafox, The Oar House, and Carmen’s Lunch Bar & Tapas. In the uptown area BJ’s Brewhouse, George Bistro+Bar, O’Brien’s Bistro, Cactus Flower Cafe, and East Hill Pizza are some of my favorites. 12th Avenue is becoming a happening place with the Magnolia Restaurant relocating from Cervantes Street.

What is one thing that you do not go a day without?

I start my day thanking God for the family he has given me. My rst wife, Marcy, passed away after 32 years of marriage and he blessed me with my current wife, Jane, three years later.
