Topic and Description: Social and Cultural World- Social Research Methodology 1. Collect and submit 2 DIFFERENT MEDIA SOURCES (e.g. newspaper article, journal article, documentary) on ONE CULTURAL or SUB-CULTURAL group. Some media resources may not be appropriate to submit, e.g. film, radio, so a brief summary of the source content should be submitted in its place. 2. Complete a CONTENT ANALYSIS of each source, identifying connections to the fundamental concepts of society, culture, persons, environment, time, perspective, content and target audience. This content analysis can be presented as a table, mind map or brainstorming notes. (20 marks) 3. Produce a 1000 word (max) report that addresses each of the following: a) What stereotypes have been used in the representation of this cultural/sub-cultural group? b) Are the stereotypes positive or negative? Support this with evidence from the media source. c) How accurate is the portrayal of this group? Give reasons for your point of view. d) What role has the media played in determining these perceptions? (20 marks) 4. Include an ANNOTATED bibliography. Refer to handout provided. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Students will be marked based on their ability to:  Locate and analyse appropriate media sources  Critically assess secondary sources of information  Use the language of Society and Culture with understanding  Conduct the methodology of ‘content analysis’  Thoroughly address all aspects of the task with logical, coherent and concise responses  Where appropriate, draw evidence from the media sources with references to specific examples  Complete an annotated bibliography that reflects breadth of research.
