HOW THIS TASK FITS INTO YOUR LEARNING
one of the essential skills you learn in History is that of analysing. Analysing means examining written sources (documents,letters etc) and visual sources (photographs, cartoons) so that you understand what the source is about. You should also be able to question the truthfulness and accuracy of the source. This accuracy is determined by comparing what the source says with what you already know to be the truth. another of History’s essential skills is communication. In this task you will be asked to communicate accurately and with detail on political events in Australia in the 1950s.

TASK DESCRIPTION There are two parts to this task PART ONE You CANNOT use the text for this part From written and electronic sources find: a written primary source a visual primary source which are relevant to the topic “Australia’s Response to Communism inside Australia in the 1950s”.
Paste each source on a separate piece of paper For each source provide an analysis which answers the following:
* the date of the source (1mk) * the type of source- a document, a sketch( 1 mk) * who created the source (1 mk) * what the source tells YOU (the Historian) about attitudes and actions towards Communism in Australia in the 1950s ( 5 mks)
PART TWO Construct a 500-600 word essay in response to this question:
Explain the actions taken by the Menzies Government in its response to Communism in Australia. In your response consider: the fear of Communism after WW2 legislation banning the CPA referral to the High Court the choice of a referendum the development AND possible reasons for the Petrov Affair Use the Guidelines for Writing an Explanation and the Criteria for Marking (pg 2)
