YEAR 10 SCHOOL CERTIFICATE TASK 3 TOPIC: CHANGING RIGHTS AND FREEDOMSABORIGINAL EXPERIENCES

DUE : Monday 22 August 2011 WEIGHTING: 25% MARKS : 50 marks SUBMISSION: All work is to be handed in before Tutor Group at Student Office on the due date. Your name and your teacher’s name to be clearly labelled. NO plastic sleeves or other folders. RATIONALE: This task is to assess your competence: * in summarising information and identifying key points * using historical information in a meaningful way to create text * understanding Government policy as it was and still is applied to Indigenous Australians

OUTCOMES  Recounts the Government policies connected with Aboriginal People and evaluates their impacts  Identifies how Aboriginal people have struggled for rights and freedoms  Selects and uses appropriate written forms to communicate about the past THERE ARE TWO PARTS TO THIS TASK : 1. Creating useful mind maps to summarise each government policy 2. Writing historical information using an Indigenous perspective PART ONE  From the work you do in class and any additional research complete accurate and well-constructed mind maps for EACH government policy as it has been applied to Indigenous Australians. i.e. Protectionism, Assimilation, Integration, Self-Determination, Reconciliation Note that some of these policies were applied to Migrant Australians as well Do NOT include references to migrant Australians.  Your mind maps should have sub-headings and include summarised information on: -Dates, -Key events, -Any key personalities and his/her contribution, -Why this Policy was introduced -Whether the Policy was Fair and Just for Aboriginal people CRITERIA Part One – 25 marks 5 marks for each mind map. 5 marks awarded for * use of appropriate sub-headings which categorise the information * selection of 1-3 most significant points under each sub-heading * information summarised and not written out in sentences


PART TWO * Adopt the persona of 5 different Aboriginal people (can be male or female) * Each Aboriginal person has lived through ONE of the Government policies Detail your life experiences under ONE Government Policy, providing information on - some key events and dates, - impacts on your family - fairness and justice - why you think the policy was introduced and if treatment of Aboriginal people was changing

* In this written work, you must submit 5 pieces of writing – ONE for each Government Policy * Each piece of writing should be between 200-250 words long CRITERIA Part Two – 25 marks 5 marks for each piece of writing 5 marks * excellent choice of appropriate historical information * writing is concise with well-structured sentences and paragraphs *student has altered text for the task * student demonstrates an understanding of change in government policy and the impacts on Aboriginal People

4 marks * chooses relevant historical information but not key events * writing is concise with correctly written sentences, paragraphs and spelling *student has altered text for the task * some references and understanding of the changes in government policy and the impacts on Aboriginal People

3marks * has correct historical information, but may refer to the wrong policy or is not a key point * writing is less concise but still has correctly written sentences, paragraphs and spelling *makes some attempt to alter the text for the task * makes some attempt to discuss changes in policy

2 marks * some historical information * writing may be too general and emotive * limited attempt to change the text * limited understanding of how government policy changed and impacted on Aboriginal people

1 mark * some information which may not be written with the correct policy
