The Production 100 was launched last year to provide decision makers in the live entertainment touring business with a resource they can turn to when looking for specific production specialists. Rather than simply grasp a few names out of the air, or charge those listed for their insertions (as some other publications do), we decided to turn to the people who know the industry inside-out to ask them to nominate their favourite suppliers. That process was universally applauded, so once again, we asked 100 professionals – mostly production managers – to name their most trusted contractors across ten key sectors.

B Once again we asked 100 professionals – mostly production managers – to name their most trusted contractors across ten key sectors. C Rather than being a chart of winners, the companies in each of our ten sections reflect the most trusted suppliers and experts in their particular sector – at least, according to our pool of voting production professionals. In the inaugural Production 100, I suggested that those operations that didn't make it into the book should plan their charm offensives on production manager clients to make sure that they made it into the 2015 publication. And with a churn of more than 40% in company listings, it would appear a large number of contractors may have done just that. As for those who have dropped out of the reckoning in the last 12 months, the same rings true – impressing those who buy their products, services or expertise in the coming year could result in being named one of the world’s top 100 production specialists for 2016.

U2 soundcheck for one of their spectacular 2015 arena tour shows

THE ROAD WARRIORS Live entertainment depends on dedicated production professionals

ONE OF THE greatest compliments that you could give to the teams of crew and production specialists that make it possible for artists to entertain people at thousands of concerts and shows around the world every single day, is that the audience are barely aware of their existence. Be it the one-man driver/manager/roadie/merch seller who takes a fledgling act around their local pubs and clubs, or the elite production manager who oversees a staff of dozens

4

of technicians, riggers and crew on a stadium spectacular, the industry simply would not exist were it not for the people who provide the ‘invisible’ support for those individuals who tour the world to entertain the masses. The fact that there are now thousands of musicians and bands on the road at any one time means that the live music industry has grown massively in the past 15 years, as artists, who once could survive on the income from selling

companies now supplying production services continues to grow and competition is fierce. C records, have been forced into a troubadour-like existence to make their money. On the back of so many more tours, the associated specialists that provide equipment and services to enable the productions to hit the road have also become big businesses, to the extent that there is now a degree of consolidation going on in key sectors where mergers and acquisitions are helping to create true international production powerhouses. Because of the money now involved in touring, artists and the talented minds who help them realise their creative vision, are always looking out for something new, something bigger, something better, to make their latest shows an experience that fans remember for years to come. The pace of technological development is helping that, with one of 2015’s most groundbreaking productions pictured above, where U2’s iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE tour relied heavily on PRG

Nocturne’s V-Thru screen as a central part of the show. Innovations in such video equipment are being matched by advances in the lighting and sound businesses too, while audience demand is also driving development across nearly every sector involved in show production, as well as making sure the people and equipment that make it all possible are looked after as they travel from town to town and, for those bigger acts, country to country. The number of reliable, professional companies now supplying production services continues to grow and competition is fierce. As a result, there are 42 new entries out of our 100 this year, while 58 operations managed to maintain their status among the production manager voting community. We hope that you find the information in the 2015 edition of the Production 100 helpful when you are planning your next tours, festivals or shows.

Artist & Crew Travel

Ensuring artists and crew travel efforlessly from show to show is now a specialist logistical business

ARTIST AND CREW TRAVEL The logistics of moving people is crucial to the production world...

AS LIVE MUSIC is now the dominant revenue source for artists, the number of acts out on the road has grown massively in the last decade. That activity has provided transport providers working in the industry with the opportunity to expand their businesses as they meet the complex challenges of moving artists and their crews from city to city, country to country and even continent to continent. Last year’s Production 100 saw this sector dominated by bussing and aviation specialists. However, in response to feedback from many of our production and tour manager voters, we have widened this category to include travel

agents, as they are the people on the front line who have to deal with the transport and accommodation needs of everyone involved in taking a show on the road. As a result, there are six new companies in this year’s listing – the highest turnover of any sector in the publication – including four live entertainment specialist travel agencies: The Appointment Group, Ibero Tour Service, Rima Travel and The Tour Company. The remaining newcomers are international aviation experts Chapman Freeborn, as well as American bussing outfit, Hemphill Brothers.

Ibero Tour Service

Premier Aviation

IBERO TOUR SERVICE is affiliated with Ibero International GmbH travel agency and offers services specifically tailored towards the music and entertainment business. The company was established in 1967 by Kurt Barthold, who is still an active managing director, along with Spanish partners active in the tourism business. Based in Frankfurt, Ibero Tour Service's clients include Creative Talent, CTS Eventim, Deutsche Entertainment AG, Live Nation, Marek Lieberberg Konzertagentur and Wizard Promotions, while its artist clients include A-ha, Calexico, Chris de Burgh, Die Toten Hosen, Herbert Grönemeyer, Kaiser Chiefs, Manu Chao, My Chemical Romance, Nigel Kennedy, Rammstein, Santana, Sasha, Snoop Dogg, Sting, Sum41 and many others.

FOUNDED IN 1994 to look after a roster of clients, primarily from the entertainment business, Premier Aviation has grown to become one of the leading worldwide private aircraft charter brokering companies serving many of the leading names in music. Working with partners in the USA and Australia, providing ad-hoc flights to major tour programmes spanning the globe, their aviation expertise coupled with round-the-clock personal service has resulted in a varied client portfolio. In 2011 the company became a wholly owned division of the Hunt & Palmer group and whilst still operating under the familiar brand, the dedicated Premier Aviation team look after artists and clients that have remained loyal throughout the company's 20 years.

Phoenix Bussing

MM Bandservices

PHOENIX BUSSING IS, according to its management, staffed by some of the finest minds in Europe. “Drivers are recruited from the top echelons of the CERN experiment in Switzerland," the company jokes, adding that Phoenix still had enough resources left to invest in a fleet of top-line double-decker crew, band and star buses to take it into the next decade and beyond. As part of the company's ongoing technical development, buses are being fitted with film streaming systems on a local Wi-Fi network so that passengers can access films on their mobile devices whilst travelling. Future projects include fitting the buses with full-length putting greens and robotic bus butlers. And if that isn’t enough to get your custom, they don’t know what is !

MM BANDSERVICES WAS founded in the year 2000 as a specialist transport provider to the live music industry. The company is based in the UK port of Hull, which has fantastic links to Belgium, Denmark, Holland and Norway. The company’s all-inclusive pricing means that when clients are budgeting for the likes of a European tour, there are no surprises. MM has budget buses for those acts doing smaller gigs on a tight budget, through to a new fleet of extralong crew and band buses, specialising in long-distance and European tours. MM Bandservices even has specialist star buses with double beds and extra-large bunks for the star’s close entourage. A new fleet of trailers to carry backline can also help save money in trucking costs.

Rima Travel RIMA TRAVEL WAS founded in 1997 by Ernie Garcia-Sheriff and Dave Brock, creating one of the UK’s largest corporate and entertainment travel management companies. The company has specialised knowledge due to its principals’ 20 years as handson managers, while the experience of Rima’s staff enables it to provide high levels of customer service. The company says its rates and expertise are second to none and it sets out four key elements

as part of its mission statement: making travel arrangements should be a simple, professionally organised event that can be done in an atmosphere of confidence; clients should have confidence in the quality of service, the competence of their travel consultant and feel that they understand their needs whilst executing their requests swiftly; Rima’s dedicated, experienced team is totally focussed on its clients and their needs; the company’s independence and flexibility ensure it stands out from the crowd.

The Appointment Group

Hemphill Brothers

ESTABLISHED OVER 25 years ago, The Appointment Group (TAG) specialises in looking after the diverse travel requirements of the music, media and entertainment sectors. TAG Global Touring offers a unique 24-hour global service via its offices in London, Manchester, New York, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore and is therefore able to offer the most competitive airfares, hotel rates, ground transport, airport meet and assist services, and private charters. The company reduces overall travel expenditure by providing an individual, high-quality service, specifically managed and updated by dedicated tour specialists who fully understand the complex requirements of music touring, artist and entourage travel management.

JOEY AND TRENT Hemphill learned about bussing when their father started his own bus leasing company in 1974. This provided a solid foundation when they decided to go into business for themselves in 1980, aged just 21 and 20. Two buses soon became six, and they hired staff and continued to expand their fleet as well as their list of clients from the music industry. In 1989, Trent and Joey left the road to focus on the growing business. They stopped outsourcing and brought everything in-house, overseeing the quality and special requests of their clients. Hemphill now boasts more than 90 coaches, an unparalleled team of drivers and mechanics, and a client list that looks like a who’s who roster of celebrities, musicians, sports figures, and politicians.

Catering Services

Providing a range of healthy meals is just part of the catering remit

CATERING SERVICES Fuelling the production builders and their performing artist employers...

ASK ANY TOURING artist or crew member where the heart of the outfit is, and chances are that catering will be at the very top of the list. Indeed, underlining the importance of good food, agents often tell festival organisers that the standard of catering dominates artist feedback. In addition to providing tasty meals for those tasked with loading in and loading out gear, today’s catering companies employ nutritionists who can ensure that those working on the road, often for months at a time, receive the diet that they need to thrive. Tour caterers are among the hardest

working members of a touring production, often being the first at a venue to provide sustenance to those loading in, but also last to leave, preparing meals for their colleagues at the end of loading out. And with fresh produce to source every day, catering teams have to plan well ahead of time to buy their ingredients, no matter the town or country they find themselves in. Proving what a competitive sector catering is, this year’s Production 100 sees four new entrants in this category – UK-based Sarah’s Kitchen, American firm Dega, Belgium’s Rock The Pots and German compatriots Team 412.

Dega Catering

Central Catering Services Ltd WHAT MAKES AN event a festival, rather than just a gig in a field? According to Central Catering Services (CCS), it is the variety of food outlets, market stalls, bars, and alternative activities that capture the imaginations of the festival goers and make each event memorable. After 25 years, CCS has one of the largest databases of food and market concessions in the UK and operates its own multiple dispensing pumping facilities allowing it to cover multiple large-scale events running on the same date anywhere in the United Kingdom and can supply cash machine facilities to all the events it operates. The company has recently completed the purchase of ultra-modern ‘hole-in-the-wall’ ATM facilities.

DEGA CATERING IS a full service tour catering business that has been on the road for 20 years. From the company’s inception, it has tailored its offerings to the artist and tour requirements, handling any size tour with any range of budget. Clubs, theatres, arenas, stadiums, parking lots – Dega has done it all. Dega’s philosophy is that homemade food is one of the few home comforts that people can enjoy on the road. The company’s range of services include: three hot and homemade meals every day; private, comfortable dining areas available all day long; dressing room service; stage and bus service; deluxe driver takeaways; and direct advancing from Dega HQ to promoters so no one’s counting pennies on the tailgate late at night.

Sharpe has since established the company’s first US base in Chicago, while Davenport remains in the UK. Among the company’s extensive client list have been Pavarotti, the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and Michael Jackson, as well as Paul McCartney whose insistence on vegetarian food opened doors for EYHO as they met the challenge of providing hundreds of people with a strictly veggie diet. Eat Your Heart Out’s chefs are used to improvising, no matter what the venue, with chefs inventing recipes due to limited ingredients in remote locations.

Popcorn POPCORN IS A small family-run operation that appreciates that its success is attributed to its exceptional staff, some of whom have been with the company for many years, and have been great mentors for the younger ones coming through the ranks. The company provides vastly experienced staff who work well together and create a warm and friendly atmosphere within the catering room.

The service provided is more than just the food – Popcorn’s mission is to commit to providing a professional and high quality of service to fulfil the specific requirements of all of its varied clients. Its chefs are used to Improvising daily to work with challenges within the touring situation in the UK, Europe and, occasionally, worldwide. Sarah’s Kitchen

Snakatak

WITH A CAREER’S worth of experience in all areas of the entertainment catering industry, Sarah Nicholas has become a familiar character to many due to her freelance catering work. In 2010, she set up Sarah’s Kitchen, specialising in theatre tours, but she soon found herself back in arenas as her artist clients grew, and demanded she went with them. Sarah’s attention to detail from sourcing ingredients, to front-of-house set-up, through to imaginative and peaceful dressing rooms, ensures that the company offers clients a truly individual and bespoke service. This skill, combined with her wealth of administrative experience ensures customers receive a smoothly run, happy tour, at a competitive price with food that looks and tastes delicious.

Crew Companies

Skilled crew are the backbone of the live entertainment industry

CREW COMPANIES The men and women that help acts tour successfully and safely...

WHILE THE PERCEPTION of crew personnel might be of unskilled grafters humping gear into venues, nothing could be further from the truth. Today’s professional crews tend to augment their experience with programmes where they add key health and safety training to their skillsets, while many are graduates of specialist production schools. The use of sophisticated lighting, sound and video equipment by touring productions has also resulted in some of those suppliers developing their own inhouse education courses, meaning that the current generation of crew are the most prepared, skilled workers that have

ever been on the road. With thousands of live shows now taking place globally on a daily basis, the need for reliable, professional personnel has never been greater, driving the plethora of crew companies that maintain databases of staff that can fulfil roles for everything from stage hands to production directors. Demonstrating just how fierce competition is, there’s a 50% turnover in this year's Production 100 crew company listings with Germany’s Livedepartment, Gulf Crewing Company (UAE), StageCall (USA) and the UK’s DNG Production and All Alliance making their debuts.

Freight & Trucking

Container ships are regularly used to transport productions across oceans

FREIGHT AND TRUCKING Delivering tour essentials relies on teams of dedicated freight experts...

THE COMPLEX LOGISTICS of international touring and the growth of mega arena and stadium productions have only been made possible by the logistical problem solvers that organise the transportation of production equipment around the planet. Dealing with the challenges of restrictive driver working hours, border control red tape, carnets, and transportation from continent to continent, the industry’s freight sector has developed ingenius solutions for the unique demands of its clients. Whether it’s the local delivery of backline equipment by van, organising fleets of vehicles to take stadium shows

around Europe and North America, using ships to take tons of equipment across oceans, or chartering aircraft to allow shows to reach remote parts of South America, trucking and freight transporters are working harder than ever to keep costs low. Indeed, the local knowledge that experienced drivers amass during their hours on the road can often cut crucial hours off journeys, allowing production crews more time at venues. Such valueadded services may be the reason that companies such as Stardes, Pieter Smit, Transam and Black Box Music have been voted on to this year’s list.

Infrastructure

Laying ground protection is now a vital part of outdoor events

INFRASTRUCTURE Infrastructure suppliers build the foundations for live production...

THEY MAY BE the unsung heroes of the live event industry, but the diverse nature of services that those working in the production infrastructure sector offer means that they are a vital part of the business. Event organisers need numerous elements, often unseen or unnoticed by the ticket-paying public to enable their shows to proceed. From power generation and cabling; fencing and access-control systems; ground protection and safety barriers; blackout drapes and seating; and even toilet facilities, the industry relies on an army of suppliers to prepare buildings, tents and fields to host the productions

and performers responsible for the vibrancy of the live entertainment trade. In recent years, consolidation in the infrastructure sector has seen a number of suppliers attempting to become one-stop-shops, but niche specialists prevail, with the production professionals who chose this year’s Production 100 companies nominating as many smaller outfits as bigger multinational suppliers. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the turnover in our infrastructure listings, compared to last year, has been 50%, with Acre Jean, Aggreko, Blackout, Godik and Terraplas making their first appearances in this year’s Production 100 guide.

Lighting Rental

The use of lights and lasers is now integral to even small club shows

LIGHTING RENTAL Innovation is forcing lighting suppliers to increase investment...

THE VISUAL SIDE of concerts, festivals and other live entertainment has never been more prevalent and the number of productions that now include lighting directors as part of the team has grown exponentially in the last decade or so. Mergers and acquisitions in the lighting business are perhaps shrinking the number of operators in this crucial sector, but as this year’s listings demonstrate, the competition remains healthy, with our pool of production professionals voting in five newcomers to their top-ten lighting rental suppliers. And underlining the need for lighting partners no matter where a show tours, there’s a wide geographical

spread for those newcomers – Black Box (Germany), Bright Group (Scandinavia), Gearhouse (South Africa), White Light (UK) and Protec (United Arab Emirates). Technological advances are having an enormous impact on the lighting business, with LED development in particular driving change. The use of these LEDs is allowing creative directors to factor in more equipment than ever, as the units themselves decrease in size and weight. However, the speed of innovation means that productions are demanding the very latest equipment, forcing suppliers to continually upgrade their equipment stocks.

Rehearsal Facilities

The state-of-the-art facilities at Rock Lititz are among a growing list of mega rehearsal spaces

REHEARSAL FACILITIES Rehearsal rooms are the testing grounds of the business...

THE IMPORTANCE OF rehearsal spaces cannot be overstated now that musicians and artists rely on live performance for the bulk of their annual income. From low-level club shows to stadium spectaculars, acts need to rehearse their stage craft before taking new productions on the road. As well as perfecting the use of new equipment and programming video, lighting and special effects to sync with the performers on stage, rehearsal rooms play a significant role in the overall planning for a tour. Production managers can use rehearsal time to gauge equipment weight, especially for those elements that

need to be flown from venue roofs. At the top-end, rehearsal spaces for stadium and arena shows are at a premium, but artists at that level are increasingly booking vacant venues to carry out what is the creative equivalent of research & development. But with more and more equipment suppliers establishing rehearsal rooms (and spaces also expanding their artist services), refurbishment programmes are now the norm as studios strive to make their facilities as luxurious and artist-friendly as possible. New to this year’s listings are American frontrunners Rock Lititz, CenterStaging and Swing House Studios.

Staging & Rigging

Expanding outdoor events mean ever bigger staging solutions

STAGING AND RIGGING Stages are playing an increasingly central role in show production...

WHILE THE MAJORITY of stages are still simple raised platforms for acts to use as performance spaces, at the pinnacle of the business, stages have taken on much more significance in show production. Spectaculars such as U2’s 360° tour and Robbie Williams’ Take the Crown stadium tour, as well as festivals like Tomorrowland have used stages as an integral part of show creativity, while trapdoors, Kabukis and motorised elements have become more common as acts up the ante to meet fan expectations. Designing complex staging systems in such a way that crews can quickly build and disassemble them has become a

highly specialised part of the industry. But our voting professionals also recognise the essential role that riggers play in making those artistic visions come to fruition and this year’s top ten staging and rigging companies include debutants Knight Rigging Services (UK) and DART Rigging (Germany). Another newcomer this year hints at the solidarity among the production community. JSA shut down its Russian HQ a year ago in protest over the nation’s military moves in Ukraine. Yet despite limited activity over the past 12 months, JSA was selected above many of its peers to be in this year’s Production 100.

JSA Stage Company JSA STAGE COMPANY was founded by Alexander Strizhak as a specialist in providing management services and technical support for concerts, festivals and other events and quickly became the first professional stage company in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 2014, with JSA’s management disagreeing with the military aggression in Ukraine, it shut down its Russian operations and relocated to Latvia. Experienced working on large-scale projects, supplying staging and/or as a local production company, JSA is confident it can emulate that success from its new base. With historic clients including the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Roger Waters, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Elton John, JSA is hoping its resurrection will be swift.

Star Events IN 2016, STAR Events will have been supplying equipment and services to the events industry for 40 years. The company presents the widest range of temporary structures for worldwide sporting, commercial and entertainment events, and few organisations can compete with Star Events for its high-end engineering, planning and strategic support. The company offers a full-time engineering and design office with a range of mechanical and structural engineers. Star Events’ experienced staff carefully considers each particular situation to deliver equipment and services that clients can rely on. Whether customers are looking for a mobile stage, rigging services or a creative bespoke offering, Star Events provides them with the tools for success.

KRS is the house contractor for LS-Live Studios, and also is an approved supplier for broadcasters such as the BBC and ITV. At the 2014 TPi Awards ceremony in London, in recognition of an immensely successful year, Knight Rigging Services won the award for Favourite Rigging Company and Sven Knight won the award for Rigger of the Year.

H Video Services

Providing footage at events involves much more than simply erecting video screens

H VIDEO SERVICES Video is no longer just about seeing the artist from the cheap seats...

COMPARE TODAY’S SHOWS with those of a decade ago and one of the most obvious differences will be the proliferation of video screens and imagery that numerous productions now count on to augment live performance. While video screens at large arenas, stadiums and festival stages were once used so people could see the performers from a distance, these days the use of video has allowed artists to introduce imagery and special effects to strengthen their creative connection with fans. A whole array of specialist audio visual creators are now involved in tour production, weaving artist videos into live

performance as well as producing original content to add to the overall artistry. Those visuals are not only being shown on big screens at the side of the stage, but also on video walls encompassing large parts of the set, as well as innovative spherical screens and motorised units that can move around during the show. Consolidation in the video services business has been a factor in the past 12 months, but as you will see in the following pages, both PRG Nocturne and PRG XL Video still made it into our top ten, while there are four debutants in this year’s Production 100: Black Box Music, Bright Group, Mediatech and Gearhouse.
