F il l y o u r w e e k TUESDAY, DECEMBER 31 NATIONAL CHAMPAGNE DAY
Toast to the new year! Raise a glass to 2020 with a festive Champagne cocktail from Megan Hastings of ADashOfMegNut.com. “The combo of cranberry juice, rosemary and Champagne is absolutely divine,” she says. “You only need a few ingredients, but it looks impressive!” JOKE OF THE WEEK
Call me Wonder Woman... I wonder where I left my keys, I wonder where I put my phone, I wonder where my money went.
To make Hastings’ Cranberry Mimosa: Fill 6 champagne flutes halfway with cranberry juice. Top each off with Champagne or prosecco. Garnish with a sprig of fresh rosemary and sugared (or plain) cranberries on a toothpick if desired. Makes 6 cocktails.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 2 NATIONAL MOTIVATION AND INSPIRATION DAY
Cheer ‘you’ on If you made a New Year’s resolution, ensure success by talking to yourself in the second person, suggest researchers at the School of Sport, Health & Exercise Sciences at Bangor University in the U.K. They found that cyclists who cheered themselves on using the second person (“You got this!”) performed better than those using the first person (“I got this!”). “The second person perspective encourages you to adopt a more distanced perspective,” explains researcher James Hardy, Ph.D. “It is likely that this promotes clearer thinking, better choices and ultimately enhanced performance.”
This week is dedicated to making light of our embarrassing mishaps—and that’s a smart way to recover from them, according to researchers reporting in the journal Qualitative Research in Psychology. They looked at how participants handled 16 socially awkward situations and found that the most successful way to move past an embarrassing moment was to laugh it off. So the next time you find yourself getting red in the face, researchers suggest saying something as simple as “awkward!” to put yourself—and bystanders—at ease and help you let the experience go.

olly Jackson was driving home one crisp November afternoon in 2018, when a group of people walking along the sidewalk in shabby clothes caught her eye. With the air cold enough to see your breath, the Cleveland woman was surprised to see the adults and children without coats, hats or gloves…and even wearing flip-flops! Her heart sank as she realized they were homeless. As she drove to her comfortable middle-class house, Holly couldn’t get those shivering people out of her mind or heart—because she knew exactly what it was like to be out on the street with nothing. Nearly three decades earlier, Holly had left her Akron, Ohio, home with nothing but the clothes on her back. Seven months pregnant, she’d finally summoned the courage to leave her abusive husband. With no place to go, Holly had slept in her car, longing for even a simple toothbrush. Eventually, she’d moved into a homeless shelter, got a job and saved enough money to get an apartment for her and her baby. In time, she’d remarried and went on to have a good life. But the struggles she had been through led her to many hours of volunteer service, doing everything from ladling soup at a soup kitchen to swinging a hammer to helping build Habitat for Humanity homes. In 2011, she received the presidential gold award for service to her community. Still, Holly had a nagging feeling she needed to do more. She just didn’t know what until God led her to drive past those homeless people. No one should have to do without something as basic as a coat in winter, she thought, her heart aching. Holly knew the city had outreach programs, but she also remembered how hard it had been for her to ask for help, and all the requirements she’d had to meet. Holly found herself thinking how great it would be if there was

Local TV stations caught wind of her project after the third wall, and as news spread, Holly was flooded with requests from people asking for a wall in their neighborhood and other folks wondering how they could help. This is turning out to be better than I had imagined, Holly beamed proudly.
Her mind churning, Holly envisioned setting up “walls” throughout the city. Like pop-up shops, only everything will be free, she smiled. And she knew just what to call Providing comfort and hope them: Walls of Love! Through donations and collection drives, Holly called city officials, who gave her Walls of Love (WallsOfLove.com) idea the green light. Thrilled, Holly began continued to thrive. In just six planning her first wall. Revisit happy moments
When life gets tough, pause and think back to a beautiful moment when you felt pure joy, advises Friedemann Schaub, M.D., Ph.D., author of The Fear & Anxiety Solution. “Maybe it’s when you met your spouse or while you were on an amazing vacation,” he says. “Remembering positive experiences helps counter any negative beliefs rooted in our subconscious and creates new, positive patterns in the brain.”
2
Write a ‘strengths’ letter
Each night, write down three things that you’re proud of like, I had a productive meeting with my boss today, or I had a good talk with my child, suggests Dr. Schaub. “Then ask, What do these things say about me? They may say you’re a good communicator or that you are very compassionate. Doing this helps you see your strengths so you can more easily tackle challenges.”

3 expert tips for turning hardship into hope!
“Pay attention to your negative thoughts, then ask, Is that really true? ” suggests Dr. Schaub. “This gives you a reality check where you can say, No, that’s not true—I can accomplish this task.” But if the thought is true, you can also say, I’m still a capable person and I’m improving, which still shifts your mind to focus on the positive.

BEAUTIFUL YOU
Holiday hair
in 2 simple
Kerry Washington
Pretty with a perky ponytail
Elegant with vintage waves
A playful ponytail that sits at the crown draws fun focus upward to elongate and slim the face, says Nelson Vercher, a celebrity hairstylist at the Rita Hazan Salon in New York City. “It’s so youthful too.”
“Infusing a bob with bouncy waves gives hair soft dimension,” says hairstylist Ashley Streicher, who’s worked with Mandy Moore and Emma Stone. “And pulling one side back with a jeweled comb adds holiday glitz and glamour that also illuminates skin.”
STEP 1: Run 2" sections of hair through a flatiron, pulling ends out and away from the face so they flip out slightly. STEP 2: Place all hair (leaving out any bangs and side wisps) into a high pony at the crown; secure with an elastic. Slide two bobby pins through the elastic on the underside of the tail to help prop it up, then tug on hair in the tail to “fluff ” strands.
Sophisticated with a soft side sweep Hair gathered to one side beautifully frames the face to highlight gorgeous features like energized eyes and a megawatt smile, says Vercher. And it helps lift up some of the weight of shoulderskimming tresses to prevent overheating and sweating while dancing the night away. STEP 1: Make a side part, then use a 1" curling iron on 1" sections of hair. Once all hair is curled, gently brush through with fingers to create big waves. STEP 2: Backcomb hair at the roots, then loosely pull strands into a low side ponytail, leaving out a 1" section of hair in back; secure with an elastic. Wrap the left-out hair around the pony’s base and pin into place.

STEP 1: Part hair to one side, then wrap 1" sections of hair around a 11 ⁄4" curling iron. Gently run fingers through curls to break them up. Edgy with feathered ‘spikes’
Naomi Watts
Building wispy texture in through the crown of a pixie gives the ear-length style a modern—not matronly!—and more dressed up look that won’t fall flat, says Vercher. Even better? The spikes draw the eye up, giving features a youthful, lifted appearance.
Maye Musk
STEP 1: Blow-dry 1" sections of damp hair with a medium-size round brush, lifting hair up at the roots as you go. STEP 2: Once hair is dry, gently tease strands at the roots for added lift. Then work a dime-size amount of pomade (like Garnier Fructis Pure Clean Finishing Paste, Target.com) through the ends of various 1" sections of hair and twist upward to help piecey layers stand out and stay put.

A messy bun pulls hair off the face, and if the style unravels at all, it looks intentional, says Streicher. Plus, with lift at the crown, tendrils at the sides and texture in back, hair looks voluminous from any angle. STEP 1: Create a middle part, then curl various sections of hair with a 11 ⁄4" curling iron. Once cool, gently brush through hair with fingertips. STEP 2: Tease hair at the back of the crown, then gather strands into a low pony; secure with a hair elastic. Loosely wrap the hair in the tail into a low, haphazard roll and pin into place. Pull out a 2" section of hair on each side in the front. Finish with hairspray.

Nat ural wa ys to Quick fixes for “I can’t get sick now!” ’Tis the season for sore throats and stuffy noses—but you don’t have to let cold or flu symptoms put a damper on your festive fun. Experts say these simple strategies will help you dodge illnesses and bounce back in record time if you’re already under the weather so you can feel merry and bright all season long!
Savor garlic knots
Spoon tomato soup
Go ahead, reach for another yummy garlic knot! Eating three cloves of garlic daily for three days at the first hint of illness can help you bounce back 63% faster, say researchers at the State University of New York at Albany. Thanks goes to garlic’s sulfur compounds, which block the growth and spread of invading germs. To activate immunityboosting sulfur, let chopped garlic rest for 10 minutes before adding it to recipes.
This week’s Radical Health tip
Delicious way to BEAT STRESS AND SLEEP MORE DEEPLY More than 164 million Americans have trouble sleeping at least once a week. If you’re one of them, consider a food fix before you reach for a sleeping pill: Load your plate with 3 cups of leafy veggies daily. Greens brim with magnesium, a mineral that’s study-proven to spur the release of the snooze-promoting brain chemical melatonin and to relax muscles, improving sleep quality threefold. The miracle mineral also wards off anxiety by nourishing the adrenal glands to reduce surges of the stress hormone cortisol by 51%. courtesy of Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D. For more, text RADICAL to 208-254-6002 or visit RadicalMetabolism.com

Gargle with green tea Viruses are surprisingly slow—once they get into your throat, it takes up to 48 hours for them to penetrate your mucous membranes. To flush them fast, cutting illness risk by 45%, gargle with green tea three times daily. Canadian researchers say green tea compounds coat viruses, making them too slippery to latch on to throat tissues. Steep a green tea bag in a cup of boiled water for 20 minutes and store in the fridge between uses.
Chicken soup? Nope! New research suggests enjoying a bowl of tomato soup daily could cut your risk of catching a bad cold or the flu in half, plus tamp down your sniffling and sneezing by 60% if you’re already feeling ugh. Explains physiologist Maria Garrido, Ph.D., tomatoes are packed with an immunity-strengthening red pigment (lycopene), and cooked tomatoes make this compound much easier to absorb.
Try black elderberry When everyone around you is sneezing, black elderberry extract can power up your defenses fast! fe e l g r e a t Sweet breath = better health When you’re going in for a holiday hug, you want your breath to smell fresh. These all-natural cures not only sweeten your breath, they’re packed with other benefits proven to help you live a longer, healthier life
Start with cinnamon tea
Nibble on cardamom
On groggy mornings, enjoy your breakfast with a breath-freshening, energy-boosting cup of Ceylon cinnamon tea. “A dry mouth is linked to bad breath,” says Maya Feller, M.S., R.D., C.D.N., founder of Maya Feller Nutrition. “Cinnamon tea is a sweetsmelling way to rehydrate, plus the spice has potent antibacterial benefits.” Not only that, its plant compounds have been shown to reduce blood-sugar swings by 29%, which Feller notes improves energy throughout the day, limiting dizziness, fatigue and lethargy.
For centuries, women around the world have snacked on the delectable seeds after a meal to freshen their breath. And research now suggests oils in cardamom might help you live longer too, by quashing up to 54% of harmful bacteria lurking in the mouth. “When bacteria build up and cause gum disease, inflammation spreads and causes diseases elsewhere,” explains Sharona Dayan, D.D.S., DMSc, founder of Aurora Periodontal Care. “Antioxidant compounds in cardamom play a role in calming inflammation.” And Cleveland Clinic scientists say that eliminating gum disease might add six full years to your life. Another bonus: Its scent is proven to enhance focus fast.
Upgrade H2O with mint Mint’s ability to block odor-causing biofilm from forming along the gumline makes it a natural toothpaste ingredient, and peppermint also cuts belly bloat by as much as 57%, according to Canadian research. “Mint has antibacterial, antiviral and antiinflammatory properties,” explains Feller. Enjoy the fun without the hangover! We’re three times more likely to say yes to an extra drink (or two!) during holiday gatherings than at any other time of year—and that can leave us feeling weary, achy and blah the next day. The great news: These simple strategies can hangover-proof your parties, so you can enjoy all the merriment without suffering fun-sapping symptoms

Pre-hydrate Alcohol is a diuretic, encouraging your kidneys to flush fluids. And the resulting dehydration triggers morning-after symptoms, says internal medicine specialist Oliver James, M.D. A clever trick: Down 16 oz. of a rehydrating solution such as Cheers Hydrate or Hydralyte before your first cocktail. These mineral-rich sips are popular for next-day recovery, but four studies suggest having them before prevents fluid losses, so you wake up 50% more energized.
Go with the clear winner! Sipping a clear-colored drink like white wine, gin or vodka will cut your hangover risk by 33%. These sips contain fewer pain-triggering compounds (congeners) compared to darker drinks like red wine, bourbon and brandy.
Snack on cheese Your stomach lining produces an enzyme (alcohol dehydrogenase) that breaks down alcohol. No wonder Canadian researchers say keeping alcohol in your tummy a little longer cuts your risk of morning-after ughs by 65%. To do: Pair each drink with 1 cup of digestion-slowing food, such as cheese and crackers or crudités and dip.
Try this root You could cut your risk of waking up sluggish by as much as 51% by taking 200 to 500 mg. of Panax ginseng before bed, suggests research in Food & Function. Explains study coauthor Min Lee, Ph.D., this medicinal root energizes your liver, speeding its breakdown of alcohol. Note: Check with your doctor before supplementing.
Breakfast on eggs Alcohol boosts a relaxing hormone (GABA), but as your alcohol level drops overnight, so does your GABA release. To feel 55% more upbeat the next day, order up eggs. UCLA researchers say eggs brim with building blocks needed to restore GABA production. —Brenda Kearns

Happy & healt Short on time? Good news! You can banish worry, chase away tiredness and maximize merriment in five minutes or less
Boost energy with this cup of tea Between wrapping gifts, trimming the tree and celebrating with loved ones, it’s no wonder you’re twice as likely to feel draggy this time of year. To the rescue: chaga tea. This mild blend brewed from mushroom extract lifts your energy by 35% if you sip three mugs daily, research in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine found. The brew brims with compounds that stimulate the central nervous system and prod the body to turn fat into fuel. Tip: Add a splash of milk for a mocha-like flavor! Cherished ornaments lift your spirits by 33%! Feeling a slump? Reach for your favorite handmade ornament. Focusing on the shape, size and texture of a memento increases your vitality by 33%, says Scott Haltzman, M.D., author of The Secret of Happy Families. A trip down memory lane releases energizing brain chemicals, which revives vim and vigor.

AND WASH IN COLD WATER! Rinsing your hands in cold water for 60 seconds prods the body to release a revitalizing hormone called norepinephrine, which Swiss scientists say chases away tiredness for up to two hours.
hy in a flash Sharpen your focus by switching hands Brain fog making it difficult to stay on task? Try using your nondominant hand to eat your dinner, water your plants or put the finishing touch on a wrapped gift. Challenging yourself by doing something familiar with the “wrong” hand encourages the brain to produce a focus-enhancing chemical, which Canadian researchers say can improve your concentration and alertness by 45% in 60 seconds. AND CHEW CINNAMON GUM! Popping a piece of gum boosts blood flow to your brain, something St. Lawrence University researchers say heightens your concentration by 25%. What’s more, cinnamon’s scent spurs the production of brain waves known to sharpen your focus.
Erase worry by doodling wreaths When last minute to-do’s threaten to send you into a stress spiral, grab a pen and sketch out a quick image of a pretty holly wreath or cheerful snowman. Drexel University investigators say creating whimsical loops and flourishes (no matter your skill level) takes your mind off your stressors and curbs the production of the stress hormone cortisol, soothing anxiety in less than five minutes. OR BRUSH YOUR HAIR! Using a brush (or your fingertips!) to stimulate sensitive nerve endings in the scalp for just two minutes has the power to slash your body’s output of stress hormones in half for up to three hours, University of Miami researchers say.
Spark more joy with a cozy blanket To melt moodiness in a hurry, put your feet up and wrap yourself in a soft blanket. Running your fingers along something fuzzy stimulates the release of the brain chemical oxytocin, which scientists at Loma Linda University in California say improves your outlook and puts you in a jolly mood in one minute. OR SIT HERE! You can “catch” someone’s joy just by sidling up to a cheerful loved one. A study in the journal Psychological Science found that a person sends signals about their mood through their unique scent—and when your brain registers the scent of someone happy, it amps up the production of mood-boosting chemicals to match!
Trim calories with pine nuts To sidestep overindulging at a family feast, nibble on 1 Tbs. of pine nuts (like those in a traditional pignoli cookie) before digging in. The buttery nuts contain pinolenic acid, a healthy fat that helps the body dial down hunger hormones. The waist-whittling result: You’ll effortlessly eat up to 36% less! AND PICK A PRETTY PLATE! Swap your plain dish for one with a border, and you’ll automatically put food only in the center, tricking yourself into eating 20% fewer calories.

Keto off 11 Wish there was an easy way to reverse weight gain and energy drain during this hectic, high-calorie time of year? Kellyann Petrucci, N.D., has you covered! Her new five-day detox uses principles of the famous keto diet to ignite mega-fast fat burning while simultaneously flooding your body with special nutrients that restore stamina and radiant health. “We’ve done clinical testing, and women are losing 5, 10, even 11.4 pounds in just five days. They also report feeling rested, restored and revitalized,” reveals the nationally renowned natural-health expert, author of Dr. Kellyann’s Cleanse and Reset and six other bestsellers. Bonus: “You’re triggering changes that increase metabolism permanently, so you keep burning off fat long after the five days are over!”
D IT WORKS! Georgia lost a size in 5 days! After signing up to test Dr. Kellyann’s detox, “the first couple of days, all I could think about were baked goods,” recalls Florida massage therapist Georgia Kosloski, 54. “But I hung in there.” She’s glad she did! The cravings soon disappeared, along with a pant size. “By day four, I felt awesome. Full of energy, mentally clearer, no more heartburn. My face started looking tighter, almost like I got a face-lift!” She’s continued to eat healthier ever since, “but if I fall off the wagon, I don’t gain like I used to.” In fact, she keeps dropping weight. “Before, I was at a standstill, no matter what I did. Now I feel young, confident and happy again!”

r. Kellyann came up with her new approach out of personal necessity. She’d run herself ragged, gained 20 pounds eating comfort food and finally collapsed from exhaustion and anemia. “Even when you know exactly what to do to take care of yourself, sometimes life goes sideways,” she shares. “At first, I was just looking for a strategy to get myself back on track. But as I was doing research, a light bulb went off, and I knew I could help a lot of people.” That includes the millions of us left bloated and burned out by the exhausting run-up to Christmas. “My plan can help you feel good fast, so it’s more fun to celebrate. And you’ll be glowing in your holiday photos!”
Keto—the gentle way! Traditional keto diets replace the sweets and starch we normally eat with fat-rich foods—a trick that slashes the production of blood sugar, the body’s go-to fuel. Our systems respond in a very slimming way: They begin turning stored fat into an alternate fuel called ketones. University research shows this process causes fat to burn about 900% faster. Ketones also block hunger, boost mood and significantly increase energy. You’ll get all those benefits on Dr. Kellyann’s detox. So why tweak the original keto formula? “If you’re already run-down when you start, a traditional keto plan will make you feel worse,” she explains. “My version is built around liquids like smoothies
Meals that heal, rejuvenate Use Dr. Kellyann’s basic detox menu for five days, enjoying smoothies at breakfast and snack time, a detox shake for lunch and detox soup for dinner. Post-detox, favor options that are unprocessed and lower in carbs. As always, get a doctor’s okay to try any new plan.
LEMON WATER Upon waking up, sip a glass of water (either hot or cold) with the juice of 1 ⁄2 lemon and any herbs you like. Dr. Kellyann says this hydrates and gives you a nice dose of vitamin C—two factors that help shift your metabolism out of “sleep mode.”

The practitioner increased the pressure depending on where she felt tension so she could unblock these areas and allow fresh energy to flow into Dianna’s joints. The treatment lasted about a half hour, and afterward, Dianna noticed her pain had lessened and she felt extremely relaxed. Hopeful, Dianna began going for treatments every two weeks, and each time, she felt less pain and inflammation and had more mobility. Even more amazing, within just a few months, she was able to stop all of her medications with her doctor’s support. She also noticed her depression and anxiety had improved dramatically, she was more optimistic and her energy soared. Today, Dianna, 51, keeps her fibromyalgia symptoms at bay by going for treatments once a month (the cost is $60 an hour, and you can find a local practitioner on ZeroBalancing.com). “I wouldn’t be where I am today without Zero Balancing,” says Dianna, who’s now started her own petsitting business. “I have my life back, and I can finally see a bright future!” —Julie Revelant

“Help! I’m not ready for Christmas!” From pinpointing last-minute gifts to setting a festive mood fast, our experts share tensiontaming ways to celebrate the holiday! Score many with one A great way to save time and money? Buy a gift basket and repackage the contents into smaller presents, advises savings expert Trae Bodge. “You’ll find huge baskets filled with everything from beauty products to gourmet snacks at BJs and Costco,” she says. Send unique gift cards A new free app is making it easy to send ultra-personalized gift cards in seconds. “It’s called GiftYa, and it lets you choose a dollar amount for almost any merchant, even local businesses,” reveals Bodge. “Say your mom has a favorite manicurist in town—even if that business doesn’t have gift cards, you can text her a GiftYa and she’ll be able to use it when she goes for her holiday mani.”
Head to the drugstore “In the last days leading up to Christmas, you’ll find steep savings—as much as 50% off— on everything from decorations to cute teddy bears, at the drugstore,” says Bodge. And be sure to check out the photo department: You can create a photo book in an hour, even on the 24th, for as much as 40% off. “These gifts are so meaningful, and no one will ever know they only took an hour to make!” Lift their spirits An inspiring way to share the joy of the season and relieve stress? Pick up an inexpensive journal for a loved one and give it a “head start,” urges savings maven Jeanette Pavini. “On the first few pages, I write some of my favorite quotes and include an inscription, encouraging the giftee to finish the journal with their favorite affirmations,” she says. “It only takes
minutes and I feel so much joy afterward.”
Make it easy Create a jolly ambience It’s easy to make merry mood lifters in minutes. “All you need is pine greenery—in giveaway bins at home-improvement stores—and candles,” says savings pro Mary Hunt. “Nothing makes your home more beautiful faster than candles.” Another small touch? Just placing holiday hand towels from the dollar store in your bathroom shows guests how much care you put into the details, yet takes almost no time.
Follow your own rules If it’s too hard to gather everyone on Christmas, consider a new tradition of spending the day after together, says Hunt. “It’ll give you more time to prepare and you’ll be more relaxed.” And rather than stress over time-consuming rituals, just flex your creativity. “One of my readers simply hid an envelope in their tree with a clue to where a gift was hiding—even when their kids grew into adults, this ‘holiday hunt’ was their favorite ritual.” In the end, she notes, just being with loved ones will make you feel like you have all the time in the world.

WISE WORDS
“Spreading love is Candace Cameron Bure first stole our hearts as D.J. Tanner on Full House in the late ’80s, and has since blossomed into a talented actress, author, mom and role model for millions. But despite her success, Candace admits she still struggles with self-doubt and fear. Here, how focusing on love and learning to trust her gut keeps her confident, brave and blissful! andace Cameron Bure has come a long way from her days as a beloved child star. With her radiant smile and a heartfelt sincerity that touches every fan, friend and family member, she has inspired millions, not just as an actress, but as an author, producer, director, entrepreneur and even as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. “I was scared out of my mind on that show!” Candace laughs as she sits down with Woman’s World. “I had never danced before, let alone in front of so many people. I like to feel prepared, so doing something I’m not necessarily good at, or that I haven’t done before, is terrifying. It causes a lot of insecurity and fear.” Though the list of things Candace is not good at is a short one, that fear has been present at every turn. “Every day of my life, I experience a lack of self-confidence,” she admits. “But I think we all experience that from time to time. The important
thing is to push through it—fake it until you make it, even! Don’t let anything hold you back from achieving your dreams and goals.” Today, Candace has found the secret to finding balance, inspiration and peace, while still chasing her dreams. “I’m much more thoughtful about what I want to do now,” she shares. “Taking the time to really think it through gives everything so much more meaning!” And she’ll need that sense of certainty now more than ever with a new children’s book, Grow, Candace, Grow, debuting in January, the recent launch of her CookCraft cookware line and readying for the upcoming hustle of the holidays. “With everything I do, I just want to reflect love,” Candace says with a smile. “We’re in this life together, so let’s do what we can to respect one another, promote kindness and love each other.” Here, Candace’s secrets to finding confidence, joy and bliss all year long!

Share in the spirit of the season with Candace’s 25th Hallmark movie, Christmas Town, out now and executive produced by Candace herself. “I love Christmas and doing these movies!” she says. “This film is all about fostering kids and adoption—a theme I just love!” You can also see Candace in Hallmark’s latest installment of Aurora Teagarden Mysteries (check local listings).
the key to true joy!” Find peace in being present

Read your way to tranquility “I love reading—it’s so relaxing!” Candace shares. “I just finished The Path Between Us and started Enneagram. I love reading about personality types because it helps me form better relationships. But I’m always reading a lot of books because I’m looking for one that I want to turn into my next movie. I also love a glass of wine and a hot bath. It really helps me get my mind to stop thinking about work once I get home— that’s my sanctuary!”

Discover grace in all of life’s seasons “I’m just about to become an empty nester with my last child leaving home,” shares the mom of three. “Though I can’t say I’m looking forward to it, as I have such a close relationship with my children, I know this is just another season of life. I focus on how thrilled I am for them to start a new chapter too, and it brings me such joy.”
“I always spend a few minutes in prayer before my day starts,” Candace says. “I try to shut everything off—the phone and the computer. When I’m with my family, I want to be present and available and actually be there. It takes some practice and discipline, but those are the things at the start and end of my day that help me find my focus and give me peace.”

Focus on what’s most important “I used to go nuts decorating for Christmas, but I found that by Christmas Day, I’d be exhausted!” Candace says. “My decor is more simple now—a wreath, special ornaments. I love the little pieces that give the season meaning.” She also focuses on bringing joy to others. “Every year, my family and I go to a homeless shelter with breakfast for all the residents. We eat with them, share stories and bring gifts. It just makes my heart grow!”
Time with her husband and children brings peace and meaning to Candace’s holidays
Let the holidays be your respite “I decided that the month of December was the time I needed to press pause last year,” Candace says. “I needed to slow down so I could be there for all the holiday events I love to do with my family and to really recharge. I even took a two-week break from social media, which revitalized me more than I realized! I felt present in every moment and just enjoyed spending time with the people I love most.”

Learn your limits An admitted people pleaser, Candace loves to help others—but she says that it can often lead to taking on too much. “It’s a little painful to say no,” she says. “I’m definitely not comfortable doing it! But I’ve learned over the years that I’m so much better off saying no—and it’s okay to say! It opens the door for you to learn what you really want, and helps you say ‘yes’ to the things you really want to do!”

GOOD TIMES GUIDE
Have fun at a Tie a bow on your holiday to-do list in great company! Invite your friends over for an afternoon spent packaging presents, sipping sangria and sampling sweets in a merry setting
Bring on cheer with a bitty bouquet in a bag A pretty posy presented in a tiny gift bag makes any surface merry! To make, slip a water-filled glass into a mini gift sack (like Medium Buffalo Plaid Drawstring Bags, $9 for 12, OrientalTrading.com), then fill with an amaryllis bloom, berries and greenery.
Welcome everyone with a gorgeous gift-wrap hub
Cast a warm glow with a twinkling centerpiece Add ambience with an apple-kissed twinkler. To do: Set a soaked floral foam wreath in a low bowl. Press evergreen and heather snippets into foam, overlapping slightly. Pierce 10 apples with toothpicks; press into foam. To finish, add a battery-run candle to center.

“Throwing a last-minute wrapping party is an easy way to have some fun with friends while being productive,” says party pro Tammy Mitchell (PinkPeppermintDesign.com), who made this jolly wrapping station. To get her look, top a table with sweet treats, bottled drinks and jars of supplies like scissors, bows and washi tape. Stow larger items, like gift boxes, under the table.
Make merry memories with a fun game Don’t be afraid to stock up on dollar-store gift wrap—you can always use the extra for games that’ll get everyone giggling! To play the “Oven Mitt” game, cut lengths of paper that are large enough to wrap small jewelry gift boxes. Then instruct guests to slip on a pair of dollar-store oven mitts and see who can wrap the prettiest present in 2 minutes. Award the winners with scratch-off lottery tickets or Christmas ornaments.
1
Wrap faster with the ‘fold and flip’
Wrap square and rectangular boxes in seconds with this simple trick: Center your gift diagonally on a sheet of wrapping paper large enough to cover the gift. Fold two opposite corners of the paper toward each other, overlapping, and tape to secure. Make a crease in the paper on all four corners, then fold the remaining corners over the gift, taping to secure. For a video tutorial, search “How to gift wrap diagonally” at YouTube.com.

Easy gift-wrap secrets
These sweet no-bake reindeer treats save on precious party prep time! To make each, insert a candy stick between the cookie layers of a Nutter Butter sandwich cookie. Dip each cookie into melted chocolate chips, lay on parchment paper and let set. Press on candy eyes and a red M&M nose. Break a mini pretzel in half and press into sides of cookie for antlers. Display pops in candy-filled cups.
2
Save on wrapping paper
Serve up smiles with a festive sangria sipper It can be tricky to estimate how many bottles of wine you’ll need for your favorite elves. Instead, try serving a tasty sangria that only requires one bottle! Better yet, you can make a batch up to two days ahead of time. To make, cut 1 to 2 apples into chunks and 1 orange into slices. Place the fruit in a large pitcher, then pour in 1 ⁄4 cup of orange liqueur, 1 cup of pomegranate juice and 1 bottle of red wine; stir well and chill in the fridge. When ready to serve, pour into tall glasses, then top each with 1 Tbs. of pomegranate seeds, a splash of club soda and a rosemary sprig.
Rather than shell out $9 for 16 feet of printed wrapping paper, you can get a jumbo 200-foot roll of solid-colored gift wrap for as little as $7 at craft stores. A solid red or green wrap creates the perfect backdrop for dressing up presents with dollar-store bows. No time to pick up paper? Wrap gifts in around-the-house materials like kraft paper, sheet music or crossword puzzle pages.
3
Make old bows look new
Pretty bows and ribbons can really add that festive finishing touch, making your present even more special. If any of your bows or ribbons look wrinkled or less-than-perfect, restore their beauty with this quick tip: Toss them in the dryer (set on low heat) with a clean damp cloth for 2 minutes. The low heat combined with the moisture in the cloth will expand bows to their original shape, plus take wrinkles out of fabric ribbons.

with a karate chop When it comes to throw pillows, it’s what’s inside that counts. “I always use downfilled pillow inserts, so they can be fluffed and chopped for showings,” shares Kristie Barnett (TheDecorologist.com). “This instantly creates a luxurious effect.” Get the look by fluffing your pillows, then using a karate chop to create an indentation in the top. Upholstery showing its age? “It’s a trick of the trade to use a textured blanket—thick, chunky weaves—to camouflage wear,” says Barnett. “I often fold a blanket in half, draping it down the center of the sofa back and seat for a clean look.”
Refresh your space
with warm light “If I only have a half hour to freshen up a space, I make a beeline for the windows,” reveals stager Jill Vegas, author of Speed Decorating. “I just spritz the glass with cleaner to instantly let in 25% more light and make the room look bigger.” Your next step to a beautifully bright home? Standardize your light bulbs so they’re all the same, harmonious tone. Adds Barnett, “Consider 75- or 100-watt soft-white bulbs for lovely warmth.”
Modernize your mantel
with an artful lean Have a framed photo or piece of art you haven’t gotten around to hanging? Don’t! Instead, prop it on a shelf or mantel, suggests Vegas. “This small choice helps a space feel fresh and unstuffy, and only takes a second. I especially like propping a mirror on a console in the entryway.” Tip: Thrift stores are full of framed art and mirrors that are perfect for this purpose!

Make over your sofa
Is your furniture “under arrest”? “That’s what it looks like when your pieces are pushed against a wall!” laughs Vegas. “The room becomes like a donut with a ton of dead space inside.” Luckily you don’t need to relocate your couch to counteract the effect. Vegas likes to take an accent chair and simply angle it toward the center of the room. “Varying furniture positions makes a room look bigger and more inviting.”

Are you among the 56% of us who haven’t finished your holiday shopping— and you’ve already stretched your budget to its limit? Great news: With these study-backed tips, you can spoil everyone on your list without spending a dime
Go ahead and regift
Reorganize your list
Received an early present that you can’t return or exchange, or it’s a duplicate of something you already own? Wrap it up and give it to someone else! Only 21% of us ever regift a present because we assume the original giver will be offended if we do. But, surprise! In a series of four experiments done at Harvard University, Stanford University and the U.K.’s London Business School, researchers found that the taboo of regifting is actually somewhat one-sided, and that gift-givers are perfectly fine with recipients giving their present to another person they feel could use it more!
Let’s say you bought your mom a big gift along with a bunch of little gifts—like a Keurig coffee maker plus two coffee mugs. Give the smaller gifts away to other folks you need gifts for, such as a coworker or neighbor. A University of Michigan and Virginia Tech University study found that giving a big gift alone makes it seem more impressive than pairing it with less valuable items. Researchers chalk it up to a brain quirk that makes us automatically average out the value of an entire group of gifts, lessening the impact of the one present we really want the recipient to get excited over.
Create it from the heart
Gift away half of a BOGO
Think family and friends would prefer a storebought gift over a meaningful one you make yourself? Think again! In three separate experiments at Carnegie Mellon University, folks who were given the choice of receiving a sentimental present (like a decorated framed photo of the giftee and gift-giver) or a purchased gift (like a pair of gloves) chose the sentimental present by a wide margin. A heartfelt gift you can make: Fill a jar with premeasured dry ingredients to make a loved one’s favorite cookies and attach the recipe as the label.
During the final run-up to Christmas, buy-oneget-one (BOGO) sales abound. If you’ve been meaning to buy something for yourself, and it comes with a BOGO offer, wrap up the freebie and let the recipient know you bought the same item for yourself. The fact that a gift is shared with the giver makes it a better gift in the eyes of the receiver, says a study from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and the University of Toronto. For the latest BOGO offers visit TheKrazyCouponLady. com and FreeStuffFinder.com.

SOLVE-IT-YOURSELF
Mystery
S
hould I go first?” Peggy asked, holding the three envelopes she’d discovered in her Christmas stocking. Each was numbered in festive green ink. Finding “clue” envelopes in their stockings was a game she and her husband, Dale, had created in order to stretch out the time opening gifts on Christmas morning. Like all good traditions, it stuck. Each of the envelopes contained one riddle. And the answer to the riddle provided hints of what her Christmas gifts would be. Dale gestured for her to start, so Peggy opened the first envelope and read the clue: Which of Santa’s reindeer is the fastest? “Oh, I know this!” she said as words like speeder and sprinter came to mind. But, none of those rang a bell so Peggy hummed the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer song, mentally reviewing the lyrics. You know Dasher and— “Dasher!” she blurted. When Dale nodded, she beamed and unfolded the second envelope. Which of Santa’s reindeer is the best dressed? At first at a loss, Peggy decided to replay
Reindeer riddles
the song in her head again. You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen. Comet and Cupid and Donner and— “Donner!” Peggy exclaimed, so excited to have solved the riddle that she nearly knocked over her coffee mug. Dale laughed. “Way to go!” he said. He pointed at the third, and last, envelope. Opening it, Peggy scanned the words. Which of Santa’s reindeer can be seen in outer space? “That one is too easy,” she said with a playful nudge of Dale’s arm. “Comet!” “Far out!” Dale said with a wink. “Now, each of your Christmas gifts contains three letters in a row that matches the same three letters in one of the
“I think he’s got an idea”
answers—specifically the second, third and fourth letter.” “So, the answer ‘Dasher,’” Peggy clarified. “That means the first gift will contain the letters ‘a-s-h’?” When Dale nodded, Peggy tried to think of what the gift may be. Her Christmas list had only three items: a nice sweater to wear at work, a bottle of white wine and a vacation getaway. Peggy made a thoughtful noise as she considered gifts containing the letters “a-s-h.” She was still lost in thought when Dale passed her first gift. Rectangular and not too heavy, Peggy knew it was a clothing box. In which case, it must be a sweater. That’s when the letters began to make sense. “Cashmere?” she guessed. “Open it!” Dale grinned. Removing the snowflakepatterned paper, Peggy lifted off the top of the box to reveal a soft pink cashmere sweater. “I was right!” she enthused, running her hand over the fuzzy knit. “It’s so lovely!” After Peggy set the box aside, Dale handed her the second gift. Concealed in a gift bag behind layers of tissue, this one was heavier and glugged somewhat when she shook it. A bottle of wine, Peggy
realized, remembering her wish list. She recalled the second answer, “Donner,” which hinted that the gift would contain the letters “o-n-n.” “Oh, I know this one!” she blurted. “Chardonnay!” She reached within the tissue to retrieve a bottle of her favorite wine. “Gosh, I’m a whiz at this!” “You’re doing great,” Dale agreed. “But, I saved the most challenging one for last.” He handed her the last gift, a smallish box that hardly weighed anything at all. “This will be a tough guess,” Peggy conceded. She realized that, unlike the first two, the actual gift offered no physical hint at all. So, she thought about the answer “Comet” and the letters “o-m-e.” As the answer dawned, Peggy looked up at her smiling husband, her eyes wide and prickled with tears of joy. “My goodness!” she breathed, ripping off the gift wrap with shaky hands. Lifting open the box, she gasped. She’d guessed right, again. Nestled inside were two airplane tickets to… —Kendra Yoder

Woman’s World
A timely solution When it looked like Woman’s World reader Terri L. Osburn’s family would have to go without a tree for Christmas, a creative angel saved their holiday. She writes:

ith five children and my husband often being laid off during winter when production slowed, Christmas was always a “careful” time in our family. “Careful” meaning thrifty with inexpensive gifts and homemade cookies and candy to fill the stockings. “Careful” also meant that instead of buying a Christmas tree, I would hike out into the woods that surrounded our home to search for a tree. Most likely one that would be considered Charlie Brown-ish, but beautiful to us all the same. One year, the tree I brought back to the house was small. The trunk was a mere five inches across, and it wobbled in its stand. Still, we decorated the branches with colored lights, our favorite ornaments and sprinkles of tinsel that we saved year after year. All was well, until one night, the tree—too small for its stand—began to lean and then topple. Frantically, we scrambled to straighten it, but
it refused to stay in place. There seemed to be no other solution than to take the tree down. In tears, I ran upstairs so the children wouldn’t see me cry. How could I tell them we would have to do without a
“Suddenly, I heard a voice, and an idea became clear in my mind!” tree this year? In their eyes, we needed one, or else Santa might not even come to our house. I sat in the bathroom on the edge of the bathtub and tried to prepare myself for the worst. Then, suddenly, I heard a voice clearly say, “Get a bucket and some stones.” The idea became clear in my mind. It could work! I smiled. I rushed outside to the garage to get a bucket. Lining the backyard flower bed, I found several fist-size, rounded stones. In minutes, our tree was upright once again, this time held firmly in place and ready for Christmas Day. I like to think it was an angel who spoke those helpful words to me that saved our tree and our tradition. But, more
importantly, they were words that restored my faith in angels and comforted me as I remembered that someone is always looking out for us!
ANGEL EXPERT KYLE GRAY SAYS… “Angels love Christmas because it’s a time to bring family and loved ones together. The angels know the importance of holidays and sharing a magical time with family, so it’s no surprise that Terri’s guardian angel was on hand to lend inspiration and to bring a solution to this issue. When we put up the Christmas tree, angels dance around us because this becomes a symbol that magic is available to us all.”

Circle of kindness Readers share little reminders of how much goodness there is in the world “HIS GESTURE BRIGHTENED MY DAY!” I was sending a care package to my deployed son-in-law. As I placed the package on the post office counter, the postman asked, “Special package?” “Yes. It’s going to my deployed son-in-law, and I’m sending him extra love,” I said. As I released my hug on the box, I pointed to some loose tape and asked if he’d reinforce it. “Sure,” he smiled and, with that, he wrapped his arms around the box and hugged it. “There! I sent him my love too.” His kind gesture brightened my day! —Nancy Panko, Fuquay Varina, NC “HE SAVED ME FROM EVEN BIGGER CAR TROUBLE!” One day, I was driving on the highway, when, suddenly, a horn startled me. I turned to see the man driving alongside me signaling frantically toward the front of my car. Only then did I notice steam coming from under my hood. I pulled into a café’s lot and he followed. He opened the hood, but the radiator cap was too hot to touch. So we went into the café, he bought coffee for us and then he gave me some car maintenance tips. When the engine cooled, he added coolant. He saved me from much bigger car trouble in the future. He made my day! —Dace Pedecis, Tacoma, WA “THEY MADE OUR WAIT SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE!” Recently, I took my almost 98-year-old aunt to the DMV to get her license renewed for ID purposes. It was so crowded that some folks were sitting on the floor. When a young mother noticed my aunt balancing on a walker, she immediately stood to offer her seat. Not only did she give up her seat but her daughter, who could not have been more than 5, offered me her seat! I said I could stand, but they insisted I sit with my aunt. It was almost two hours before we were called. I was so grateful for their kindness that not only made our wait more comfortable, but also enabled me to reevaluate the DMV experience. —Mary Stella, Midlothian, VA

He turns to me. “And for you?” “Well if you’re making big promises, send me a prince,” I quip. He chuckles. “Hmm… I might be able to arrange that.” I laugh, skeptically. “Good luck!” Heather and I buy sandwiches and hot cider and find a picnic table to enjoy our lunch. Just as we’re finishing up, a little girl wearing a princess crown runs up to us. “Ellen!” Heather cries as the girls hug. Ellen is breathless. “I told my daddy you’d be here but they put him to work in the princess tent, and I had to stay with him so I couldn’t come look for you!” Just then, a handsome man wearing a gold crown arrives. “There you are!” he says to Ellen. “You must be Heather.” He smiles down at us. “And you’re her mom, right?”

A shiver ripples down my spine as I nod at the tall, dark-haired man grinning at me. “I’m Elizabeth Blake,” I say, trying to compose myself. “And you are…Prince Charming, I presume?” I extend my hand and when we touch, invisible sparks fly between us. Surprised, we both look away. He clears his throat and takes a bow. “At your service, my lady. But my real name is Anthony.” My heart beats like a kettledrum as I look into his rich chocolate-hued eyes. The prince and I sit at the picnic table, talking while the girls play. Turns out he was standing in for the festival’s Prince Charming, but in real life, he’s a fireman. We chat about the girls, talk about my being new to town and share a few laughs, and before I know it, a full hour has passed. As we stand to leave, he clears his throat. “I wonder if you and Heather would like to come with Ellen and me to the firemen’s Christmas party tomorrow evening?” “Oh yes! Please, Mommy?” Heather pleads, her eyes huge. I can’t help but smile. “Sure, we’d love to go.” His lips curve into a slow, joyful smile. “Santa will be there too.” “That’s even better,” I reply. “I need to thank him for my early Christmas gift.” —Patricia Riddle Gaddis For more sweet romance, pick up Patricia Riddle Gaddis’ book Escape to the Biltmore, the story of a young woman doctor in 1895 who starts a new life—and finds love along the way! As much ho-ho-ho as it is ha-ha-ha, this modern-day classic is an apt reflection of just how creative you are. After all, an appreciation of wit and whimsy requires an active, vivid imagination, and yours is more agile than most. Whether you’re donning silly seasonal sweaters with your family or making pancakes in adorable shapes for the little ones, you exude infectious, Elf-like joy.
A Christmas Carol: You’re a deep visionary This story’s powerful message of redemption resonates so deeply with you because you have the rare ability not only to see the best in others, but to also bring those qualities out in them. A true leader, you’re idealistic enough to believe in second chances and hardworking enough to make them happen.
Miracle on 34th Street: You’re a mindful giver Christmas isn’t just a day. It’s a frame of mind. Though credit for this quote goes to Kris Kringle, you could just as easily have said it yourself. A true believer in the magic of the holidays, you spread joy year-round, be it by volunteering at your animal shelter or pitching in at church.
A Christmas Story: You’re a resilient optimist Though he’s on a one-track mission to get what he believes is the world’s best present, it’s the detours along the way that make Ralphie’s holiday so memorable. You know that the truly meaningful things in life don’t come in shiny wrapping paper. In fact, it’s likely the quirks of holidays past that make your most cherished memories.

ugging on a pair of jeans in the Walmart dressing room, 67-year-old Joann Johnson felt her breath snag. My wedding ring…it’s gone! she gasped. Since battling lung cancer and losing weight, Joann’s ring had been slipping off. Quickly, she got dressed and hunted down her husband, Kip, in the men’s department. The Port Orchard, Washington, couple scoured the store but didn’t find the cherished ring. With a heavy heart, Joann let the Walmart staff know and went home feeling hopeless and numb. “It’s okay, I can get you a new ring,” Kip soothed, as two weeks later, they celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. “No,” Joann choked. “I don’t want another ring. It wouldn’t have the same meaning.” As weeks passed, Joann struggled to accept the fact that her ring was gone forever. Then on Christmas night, she was scrolling through posts on Facebook when a picture of an Instant Pot with the message !!READ THIS!! stopped her. Joann had been thinking about buying an Instant Pot and had even looked at a few that fateful day in Walmart. Curious,
she read on and her heart skipped a beat as the words WEDDING RING leaped out at her. Oh, my God! Could it be? she gasped, trembling. That morning, 29-year-old Shiloah Avery had sputtered those same words when she opened the new Instant Pot she’d gotten as a gift and saw a ring sparkling on the bottom of the box. Gazing at the worn edges and slightly smudged diamond, Shiloah knew it was wellloved…and that someone must be frantic to find it. Immediately, she posted on social media that she’d found the ring in an Instant Pot purchased from the Port Orchard Walmart. “It will take a miracle,” Shiloah’s family told her. But a miracle was what Joann had been praying for too. This is the season of miracles, Joann reminded herself, after she saw the post and replied to Shiloah, explaining she’d lost her wedding ring in Walmart and had been looking at Instant Pots. Shiloah’s heart soared. But wanting to be sure, she asked if Joann had a picture of her ring. She didn’t, but drew a sketch. “Holy cow!” Shiloah exclaimed
Joann and Kip (right) with Shiloah (second from left) and her family Joann’s wedding ring lying in the bottom of Shiloah’s Instant Pot box
to her family. “I found the owner of this ring!” Learning they lived just five miles apart, Joann and Kip hopped in the car on Christmas Day and drove to Shiloah’s mom’s house, where the family was celebrating. As soon as they arrived, Shiloah and Joann rushed to each other, crying, laughing and hugging, as Shiloah’s mom recorded the scene to post on Facebook, which instantly went viral. Today, a close friendship continues as Joann, whose cancer has thankfully remained in remission for the past two years, and Kip have become a special part of Shiloah’s family. “This adventure has blessed me with two incredible and special people that love me and my babies as their own,” Shiloah shares. Joann beams gazing at the ring twinkling on her hand. “Shiloah is special because she listened to her heart,” Joann says with a smile. “She is and will always be my Christmas angel!” —Diane Nichols
