Happy New Year, everyone! Some of you will be doing some kind of January – Dry, Veggie, Vegan… Others starting a diet. We are here to help you ALL month with that. For me, personally, I am committing to a year of helping to ensure our ex-soldiers and servicemen and women are Not Forgotten. The amazing charity turns 100 this year. Founded in 1920 by American opera singer Marta Cunningham, she was touring a hospital when an injured solider said to her: ‘Leave us, Mam. We are forgotten.’ Marta made it her life work to make sure as many servicemen as possible from the Great War knew their country had not forgotten them. She even persuaded the then Princess Royal, Princess Mary, to become their patron. Today, the current Princess Royal, Princess Anne, works equally tirelessly as its original patron and the charity wants to find as many ‘forgotten soldiers’. If you know of anyone who might benefit from their help, let them know at info@ thenotforgotten.org

How gorgeous are these baby penguins? Unnamed as yet, this cute duo had us oohing and aahing in the best office. We have to agree with the Cincinnati Zoo, where they live, who say ‘Fact: baby penguins are floofy and adorable’. The US zoo claims to be home to ‘the largest colony of little penguins’ including these blue penguins.

They’re the Ones We Want! Olivia Newton-John, 71, and John Travolta, 65, made a special appearance in the US at a fans’ singalong event – dressed as their iconic Grease characters, Sandy and Danny. It was the first time the stars have donned their famous outfits in 40 years! But it was more than a fabulous trip down memory lane. Olivia, who is battling cancer, recently auctioned off her black leather jacket from the 1978 flick, raising £180,000 for cancer charities – after which the anonymous donor returned the jacket, so she’d always be the rightful owner. Gilets are the ultimate option for layering up in the colder months, but they’re oh so easy to get wrong. Case in point J Lo, 50, whose oversized outerwear – collar included – drowns her outfit. She should probably take advice from Lisa Snowdon, 47, whose black, furry number doesn’t bulk her frame and complements her accessories perfectly.

With the New Year upon us, we’re all setting ourselves health and wellness goals again, but we can’t imagine we’ll ever be as flexible as Victoria Beckham, 45. The fashion designer has posted various pictures online of her with her leg fully extended, but it seems she may have met her match! On The Ellen DeGeneres Show recently, Victoria, while seated, raised her leg towards her head. The talk show host, 61, almost got her leg just as high. Will 2020 be the year it all falls apart for troubled Katie Price?

Last year was a car crash for the star

e all reassess our goals and where we are going at New Year, so it might be the ideal time for Katie Price to take a step back from the limelight and focus on what she really wants from life. The former glamour model and mum-of-five was declared bankrupt in London last month. It’s shocking, given how lucrative Katie’s brands have been over the years. The 41-year-old, thought to be in debt of £800,000, squandered her reported £45m fortune on beauty procedures and expensive holidays. Katie has also lost her £2m pad – cruelly dubbed ‘Mucky Mansion’ as a result and is believed to have lost 2st due to stress. Sadly, the hellish times don’t

end there. The star’s mum, Amy Price – who regularly helps Katie take care of her disabled son, Harvey, 18 – revealed on ITV’s Loose Women last year that she ‘didn’t have much time left,’ after being diagnosed with progressive lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). IPF causes lung tissue scarring and shortness of breath and, while manageable, it is not curable. The heartbreaking reality is that – while we all need hope – doctors had given Amy just five years to live. Clearly the situation is too much for Katie, she said, ‘My mum is going to die, I just don’t want her to…’ Since her diagnosis two years ago, Amy is still a very close, influential part of her daughter’s life. Yet, worsening breathing issues means she spends more time in

Spain, leaving Katie alone in England. Would she be falling apart if her beloved mum was no longer there as a soothing voice, to help pick her up the pieces? Only time will tell. But, so far, entering her 40s hasn’t seemed to slow down the infamous party girl. Katie has been snapped several times in recent months looking worse-for-wear – being given a two-year drinkdriving ban and partying hard with her ex, Dane Bowers. Three times married, Katie’s love life seems chaotic, too. Her onoff relationship with personal trainer fiancé, Kris, 29, is turbulent, and a Christmas trip to New York just seemed to involve

spending money she knows she doesn’t have. Katie moved in with Kris just before Christmas, after losing her 11-bedroom West Sussex home. Last November, rumours surfaced that she was cheating on Kris with model, Charles Drury, also 29 – the latter later threatening to sue the star, after she ‘slammed’ him in her aptly-named reality show, My Crazy Life. Last year was a car crash for Katie. Perhaps, with those financial pressures on top of everything else, she’ll have no option but to turn over a new leaf. Is it time to let go of your ‘Crazy Life’, Katie, for your sake, your kids’ and especially your mum’s...?

On her respect for the Queen…

Sarah still respects the Queen

‘I still love and admire her. I uphold everything Her Majesty represents, has given up her life for. For her country, she’s selfless to the grave. When I met with Her Majesty about my divorce [in 1996], she asked, “What do you require, Sarah?” I said, “Your friendship” which I think amazed her, because everyone said I would demand a big settlement. I wanted to be able to say, “Her Majesty is my friend” – not fight her, nor have lawyers saying, “Look, she is greedy”.’

On her adventures in cosmetic surgery… ‘I’m happy to be open about what I’ve had done. A thread lift is like garden trellising for sweet peas. You insert the threads under the skin with a fine needle, and they hold everything up. They also encourage collagen production. It takes a couple of months, then the sweet peas bloom! But I really don’t like the frozen look. I’m so animated and I like to be myself. I don’t like the thought of needles and am very glad if I look well and happy.’

On her parenting style… ‘I think the one thing I’ve done incredibly well – although I say it myself – is that I’m a really good mum. And I think that my girls show that. I believe in example by leadership. The way I have been a mother to my girls is I never hide anything from them. Any fears we address straight on. I have always told them that it’s OK to face your fears, and to be yourself.’

On her lifelong weight struggles... ‘I have total empathy with what it is like to be destroyed by self-hatred, because when you comfort eat you put on weight, and then beat yourself up for comfort eating. It is such a vicious circle. I comfort-ate all my life from the age of 13. I started when I was at boarding school, when I heard my parents were getting divorced. ‘I did last Dry Jan - and haven’t had a glass since!’ Emmerdale actress Natalie J Robb talks about what she’s up to in the Dales – and why she’s ditched alcohol for good… hile Emmerdale’s stressedout Moira Dingle is drinking herself into oblivion, actress Natalie J Robb actually gave up alcohol a year ago. So, while plenty of us are currently nursing sore heads after overindulging during the festive season, the 45-year-old Scottish actress is enviably fresh as a daisy and raring to go! Natalie, who lives in North Yorkshire, talks to us about New Year resolutions, being single and why she revels in the role of ‘Mucky Moira’…

W

Natalie, you certainly get way more than your fair share of Emmerdale’s hot young hunks… Ha, yes, I’ve been very lucky! Moira is an earthy woman. She’s sassy and stands up for herself and a lot of guys like that. I don’t get embarrassed filming steamy scenes. It’s an unnatural thing to start kissing someone you don’t really know, but I just switch off and don’t give it a second thought! Moira is hitting the bottle hard – but ironically, you don’t drink, do you? I thought I’d try Dry January last year, to give my body a break. I’m 45 now, and I wanted to look after myself a bit more. It’s been just over a year now. I didn’t drink loads before, but I’d drink every weekend. We’re a very social country, with a drinking culture. You can say you’ve Her drinking lands her in a ditch

given up smoking and people say, ‘That’s amazing!’ But people don’t have the same reaction when you say you’ve given up drinking. They’ll say, ‘Oh come on, just have one.’ Yet alcohol is as bad, if not worse, than cigarettes. What difference has it made to your life? I’ve kept it going because I feel so much better for it. I’ve got more energy and my skin looks nicer. I’m far more productive and I’ve loads of clarity. Why is Moira drinking? She’s trying to make herself feel numb. She had an affair with farmhand, Nate, and it really backfired. She’s found out he was using her. Now she’s angry that she was so stupid in the first place. She’s lost her husband, Cain, and she’s devastated that she’s lost her family. Cain has taken their son, Isaac, and then her son, Matty, tells her he’s moving out. She hits rock bottom. She drinks far too much, and she actually gives herself a bit of alcoholic poisoning! She’s drinking straight vodka in the street, then throws up, nearly gets hit by a car and ends up lying in a ditch.

Natalie is happy and healthy – unlike Moira!

Joanna Wratten was a bad influence on her best mate, but a chance comment changed everything…

Fat friends no more! azing into the chilled cabinet at my favourite cafe, I licked my lips. Red velvet chocolate cake, brownies, muffins, Victoria sponge, carrot cake with cream-cheese icing, all beautifully baked and utterly irresistible. I’m just going to have a salad today,’ my best friend, Helene Stanley, 40, said as we waited to be served. I spun around as fast as my arthritic hips could turn me. ‘Oh no you’re not!’ I quipped. ‘We eat cake together! That’s what we do!’ I could see Helene deliberating, on the cusp of joining me. ‘You know you want to,’ I said, elbowing her playfully in the side. Helene and I had been friends for eight years after meeting on a Facebook forum for people who loved fish. We met when she came to buy a fish tank I was selling on eBay, we hit it off, soon becoming coffee-and-cake buddies. We’d meet up several times a week and eating and drinking became our ritual. We were both overweight, but a part of me felt better about being a size 26 because I had Helene beside me. She wasn’t as big as me at 13st and a size 16, but it still felt like safety in numbers.

G

Only, in February 2015, Helene had decided to join Slimming World and here she was, trying to order a salad instead of a slice of chocolate cake. Despite my best attempts to sabotage her diet, Helene was losing weight and she looked great. Her target of 10st could not be reached, probably thanks to me, so she adjusted her goal to 10st 7lbs and, eventually, she made it. I was envious of how amazing she looked. Her energy levels had changed, too – she was bouncier. Diagnosed with arthritis in every joint, I used my condition as an excuse. I couldn’t work and didn’t go out much – except to meet Helene for cake. The more weight I gained, the more I ate. I felt like a lost cause and the only thing that comforted me was another slice of cake. On several occasions, people actually took photos of me and giggled with their friends as they looked at them. In November 2016, I needed an MRI on my shoulder because of my arthritis, but I was so big I didn’t fit inside the machine. I was so embarrassed I told the friend who had taken me to the hospital that the specialist hadn’t turned up.

Joanna used her arthritis as an excuse for her size

I avoided plastic seats in case I broke them and when I caught the bus, no one sat next to me. How could they – I took up two seats. I began to wonder if maybe I should join Helene’s weight loss journey. After all, if you can’t beat them… I had an idea that I could get a puppy as an incentive to go walking. Discussing the idea with my mum, Angela, now 67, she scoffed. ‘Why?’ she asked. ‘To lose weight,’ I replied. ‘Well, your chins are getting a bit big,’ she said, jokingly. Chins – plural! Her comment stayed with me. How had I let myself get plural chins? Truth was, I was getting through 5,000 calories a day if you added up all the chocolate bars, crisps, chips and ice cream I consumed. family-sized bars of chocolate. Something had to change. ‘Come to Slimming World with me,’ Helene urged. It made more sense than getting a puppy… A week later, in February 2018, I joined Helene at her Slimming World class in Rochester, weighing 19st 9lbs – I’m only 5ft 3in! It was no wonder Helene had successfully lost weight – the consultant, Nathan, was brilliant and welcoming. He taught me I could still eat treats in moderation… I cut out the cakes, chips, pizzas and jam sandwiches and started eating vegetables. I went from never cooking meals to buying fresh ingredients and actually using more than my microwave. I never felt hungry because

I was eating food that nourished me, rather than scoffing empty calories. I started to actually feel good. The more weight I lost, the more determined I was. Over the next 15 months, I lost over 8st and now, I’m a size 12-14. My arthritis doctors can’t believe it’s me and nor can I. Taking the burden off my joints has helped reduce the pain. Now 45, I’m happier than ever. I’m less tired and don’t use a walking stick any more. I enjoy food and I’ve broadened my culinary horizons. I even like Brussels sprouts! Mum feels awful about what she said. ‘I was only joking,’ she told me, but it was the best joke she ever made. It was my turning point. Once I’d stopped being a feeder to Helene, she was able to smash her original target. She’s now 9st 6lbs and a size 10-12. We encourage each other to make healthy choices when we meet up. We still make each other laugh and tell each other anything, but it’s enjoyed over a jacket potato and salad, not a Victoria sponge. Now that I’m not nagging Helene to eat naughty food, our friendship is stronger than ever and we both feel better than ever! CAROL McGIFFIN THE WAY I SEE IT... Wise words from our feisty, fearless and funny columnist

It’s time to call time on time

ne sure-fire sign that you’re getting old is moaning about the passing of time and the speed at which it, literally, flies. Which is why I really don’t want to say this but, I can hardly believe that 2020 is here, it seems like only yesterday it was the start of 2019. I’m not imagining it. I was reading this column in the last issue of 2017 - TWO YEARS AGO - and it seems like nothing has changed, nothing has happened, and the worst bit, I’ve achieved precisely nothing apart from having a great time and managing to stay alive. The one small difference is we have a new Government, which may just grant the voters their wish of three and a half years ago and get us out of the European Union. So, there is hope, at least.

‘O

AU REVOIR, EU!

But what’s really depressing, not to mention embarrassing, is that I’ve not carried out a single one of my New Year’s resolutions from back then. I still haven’t finished my second book, I still can’t speak French, I still worry way too much that my cancer has returned and I still haven’t had my breast reconstruction. So, this year I’m not making any. Instead, I’m going to have a list of New Year Aims – and first thing on it is to keep a detailed time log, so I can see where it all goes and how much of it I’ve wasted and on what. I already know the first thing I need to address – the internet. Because before it came along, a year felt like a year… not five minutes!’

The BIG beauty

QUESTIONS We all want to look youthful, but why have surgery when softer options can be just as effective – and much cheaper? Husband-and-wife team Dr Aamer Khan and skin care specialist Lesley Reynolds argue it out in the pages of best…

Q

My kids have grown up, but the brown patches that I developed during pregnancy have never gone away and just seem to be getting worse now I’m older. How can I fix and disguise them? Are they different to normal ‘age spots’?

Jenny, Stoke on Trent

DR AAMER SAYS: Yes, there are two types of ‘brown spots’ – age spots are mostly caused through an increase in melanin when the skin tries to protect itself from sun exposure, while ‘melasma’ appears in the form of uneven patches and is caused by a surge in hormones. The VI Derm Precision Peel is excellent for treating pigmentation. A solution is applied on to clean skin, focusing particularly on patchy areas, but avoiding the eyes and lips. A course of four treatments spaced two to four weeks apart will renew and brighten skin. The treatment can be combined with VI Derm skincare designed to fade pigmentation and uneven skin tone, with results seen after four months. Expect to pay around £900 for the course. It is important that treatments are undertaken with the supervision of your doctor to ensure that any concerns are addressed appropriately.

effect, over-the-counter brightening products with ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, kojic, glycolic and azelaic acids will also help. But you’ll need patience, as they take longer to work. Try Sesderma Azelac RU Liposomal Serum, £26 (Amazon), or Ole Henriksen Glow20H Dark Spot Toner, £22. The two most important things you can do are sun protection and avoidance. Melasma can be exacerbated by light so ensure your sunscreen contains zinc oxide, which reflects light – try Ultrasun Face SPF50, £20. Recent research also shows that urban air pollution can contribute to irregular pigmentation so limit time spent in heavily polluted environments. MUA Bronzed, £2.50, can help even out skin tone.

Irene, Bristol

DR AAMER SAYS: Skin becomes drier with age, as the lipids – a waxy substance that creates a barrier against water loss – start to break down, causing dehydration and flakiness. Xela Rederm is an injectable skin booster that adds radiance. It contains succinic acid, a powerful antioxidant, and hyaluronic acid, which work together to stimulate collagen and elastin. The hour-long treatment consists of micro injections. First skin is cleansed and an anaesthetic is applied before tiny droplets are injected just beneath the surface of the skin. For best results, a course of three treatments is recommended, one every four weeks. From £250 a treatment.

A

LESLEY SAYS: If your skin is just dehydrated after all the Christmas festivities, why not try a ‘moisture booster’? Simple Water Boost Hydrating Booster, £5.50, can be added to your moisturiser or applied directly to dry areas. Thorough cleansing and regular exfoliation promotes skin renewal. Use Nip + Fab Glycolic Scrub Fix, £9.95, and follow with Asda Brightening Vitamin C Radiance Boosting Serum, £2.50. You could also use SPF30, which will do more for your complexion than any moisturiser. Using a facial oil at night will help to lock in moisture. Try to avoid products that contain alcohol and perfume as these have a drying effect. Follow with Max Factor Radiant Lift Foundation, £14.99, then a swipe of Revolution Ultra Blush Palette Hot Spice, £4, along your cheekbones for an instant healthy glow.

Q

I have varicose veins on the back of my legs, near my knees. Is there a way to get rid of these without scarring? How do I hide them in the meantime? Yvonne, Leicestershire

A DR AAMER SAYS: It’s advisable to have an ultrasound before any treatment to find out why you have developed these veins. After that, there are a number of procedures that produce the same results as surgery, but with less bruising. EndoVenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is minimally invasive and performed under local anaesthesia. A laser fibre is inserted into the vein and then slowly withdrawn, damaging the vein walls and shrinking them shut. You’ll have to wear a stocking bandage for up to two weeks. There shouldn’t be any scarring. Treatments for veins are not always permanent as vascular problems tend to be recurrent. Expect to pay around £2,000 for a one-off procedure.

LESLEY SAYS: If you just want to make veins less obvious, Vichy Dermablend Total Body Corrective Foundation, £20, or a fake tan can help disguise them. Aside from this, look for preventative measures. Supportive trainers will make the walking action more effective at pumping the blood back up your legs. Try to keep your legs raised above the level of your bottom when you’re sitting down, which encourages blood to flow back up. Include plenty of vitamin C and substances called bioflavonoids in your diet, as these strengthen the walls of blood vessels. The best sources are dark red berries.

What High Street store would you like to bring back? As we start a fresh decade – we can’t help feeling a bit nostalgic for time gone by. And one of the biggest changes we’ve seen in the past 10 years is the closing down of some much-loved high street stores. A survey by fashion research company Love the Sales found that the number one missed shop was British Home Stores – others claimed they’d like to see a revival of Barratts and Tie Rack. A quick poll around our office and we unanimously wanted to see Woolworths open its doors again – queue lots of reminiscing about buying our first CD single and spending pocket money on stationary and pick and mix! What shop would you most like to come back?

Green machine We know, we know – the minute January hits all the juices, smoothies and detox kits come out and 2020 is no different. But, here’s something refreshing – one of the more popular drinks of the moment doesn’t require an ingredient list the length of your arm to create. The main star of the show? The humble cucumber. The high water content and high nutrient content makes it a winner for those looking for something a little lighter after the excesses of Christmas. This concoction, via Yummly.com’s Pinterest page, uses the fruit along with water, limes and mint. It’s as simple as that!

OR WEIRDRFUL? WONDE

Instagram/tanaka_tatsuya

It’s that time of the year when healthy eating is at the forefront of our minds, and it seems we’re not the only ones! This video really made us smile, and it’s not hard to see why. The clip was taken at a guinea pig sanctuary and shows lots of the cute little animals lined up around what looks like a tiny dinner table to share a meal together. They avidly nibble on lettuce, carrots and cucumber (something we should do more of!), but they look very content. We wish we liked eating salad that much! Find it by Googling ‘guinea pigs munch on veggies’.

Need some Insta inspo for your feed? Here’s one worth following: @tanaka_tatsuya, an artist with over two million followers, who describes himself as a ‘miniature artist’. He takes everyday objects and turns them into works of art. From croissants made into mountains (fancy scaling those heights), to one of our favourites, pictured here – the ‘skin care spa’, people taking a dip into a classic pot of Nivea Crème. We love the sheer inventiveness of it!

Resolution revolt? Most people make resolutions after they’ve seen in the New Year, and we salute anyone who actually sticks to them. Apparently, 12 January is the date when motivation begins to falter, so we’ve decided to be kind to ourselves this year and not set ourselves up to fail! Do you manage to stick to your resolutions?

#MakeAFilmBoring We like a twist on a classic film and now that we’re watching our pennies and the festivities have ended, we like that Twitter users have been making films boring. Quantum of Shoelace, anyone?

After Life Season one was a surprise hit on Netflix last year and everybody warmed to Ricky Gervais’ character Tony, whose wife, Lisa, had died, leaving the previously nice guy to adopt a gruff, impulsive new persona. He pushed away anyone who tried to help him but we loved his poignant heartto-hearts with Penelope Wilton’s character, Anne – a fellow widow. We’re thrilled that season two is due out this spring. We can’t wait!

7 DAY DIET DPS Fill up on your favourite tropical fruit to help detox after the festive season and lose weight fast. Follow our seven-day banana cleanse plan and you could lose 7lb!

HOW IT WORKS Rich in vitamins B and magnesium that maintain a healthy hormone balance and energy levels, bananas are high in fibre, have macronutrients that speed up digestion, plus potassium that reduces sugar cravings and increase fat burning. Sarah Matthews, author of 30 Day Banana Detox, says: ‘Bananas are great for helping to cleanse the colon, fat-free, plus they help produce serotonin, boosting motivation. A must when you’re dieting!’ Your meal plan can be varied – but the key is to start the day with up to four small bananas, along with a glass of lukewarm water. Calories in a banana range from 75 to 135 so choose the small, just ripe variety for your breakfast. Aim to eat until you’re 80 per cent full: when you’re no longer hungry you should feel a very slight pressure in your stomach. Keep lunch and dinner options varied, but limit dairy and alcohol is off limits. Include lots of fruit, veggies and salad, whole grains and lean proteins, and steer clear of refined carbs and processed fats. Your banana-based breakfast will give you energy, so make snacks raw veggies and nuts, which boost the benefits of the fibre bananas contain to help you burn calories faster. Follow our banana cleanse plan and you could lost 7lb in seven days.

I’m Gangsta G Maureen O’Neill, 69, set out to make some special memories with her granddaughter… being an internet star with thousands of followers is just an added extra! t was a pretty slow day in the charity shop, where I volunteered. I was hanging up some new donations when a customer stopped in her tracks. ‘Are you…?’ she asked. ‘You are! Yes! You’re that granny from the internet,’ she exclaimed loudly – so the whole shop heard. I felt myself blush. You see getting recognised in the street, the supermarket or even in the Age UK shop in Hinckley, Leicestershire, where I live, is something I’m just getting used to. Who would have thought a 69-year-old granny like me could become an internet star? Apart from using Facebook to stay in touch with my friends, I’m not even that techno savvy…. It all began about a year ago, with my granddaughter, Livie. She has always been the apple of my eye. The daughter of my son, Mark, and his wife, Anna, and my only grandchild, I have doted on her since the day she was born in July 2007. When she was a baby I would stay a couple of days every week to look after her while her mum was at work. And, as she grew, she would come to me for sleepovers and general granny fun. The ‘fun’ changed as she got older – it used to be all dollies’ tea parties and playing school.

Maureen credits Livie with being the star

Then it turned into shopping, baking and watching TV together. But in June 2017, my sunny retirement – after years as a cash office manager – all became a bit muddy. I was diagnosed with cancer – lymphoma to be precise, a cancer of the blood. It meant I had to have months of chemotherapy. The chemo was hard-going – there would be good weeks and bad weeks. But I was lucky I always had my son, Mark, or my daughter, Sheila, to come along with me. It was a fight but the hardest thing was having to stay away from Livie – she was only 10 when I was diagnosed. After chemo, your immune system is weakened. Specialists advised against being around too many people – they recommended avoiding public transport, only going to the shops when it was quiet and to be wary around schoolchildren, who notoriously mix with lots of other kids and come into contact with all sorts

The hardest thing was having to stay away from Livie of viruses. It meant some adjustments. When I felt well enough to go out, I’d nip to the late-night supermarket where it was super-quiet. Time with Livie was reduced to phone calls or FaceTime. The chemo meant my hair fell out and I lost my sense of taste and one and a half stone in weight. My friends told me my NHS wig looked good, and it was hard to tell the difference from my real hair. But I hated the idea of Livie seeing me unwell. I made sure she never saw me without my wig and only when I was having a good day. My treatment finished in October 2017. It was then I

decided I wanted to make some special memories for me and Livie. I was on the mend, my hair had grown back and she was visiting when she showed me a mobile app. ‘Tik what?’ I giggled. ‘Oh Gran,’ she laughed. ‘It’s TikTok, we can post our own video – it can be anything from 15 to 20 seconds long. Let’s make one…’ And so, we did! I suppose the cancer and facing my own mortality pushed me forward. At 12, Livie is bursting with life. I don’t want to be one of those old grannies who doesn’t understand the young. That first time, in 2018, I let her dress me up – she made me look like the character, Where’s Wally. The next time, Livie dug out a baseball cap, a body warmer and some chunky jewellery from my dressing table. ‘Gangsta Gran!’ announced Livie. Together we made a little ‘rap’. Who cares how silly I look, I thought to myself. I’d do anything to make Livie smile. And so began our internet journey. Whenever Livie and I got together we would post a new video – sometimes up to three times a week. Livie would tell me what to do, how to stand and what to say. We tried all sort of ideas – from baking to

rapping. I can’t move as fast as Livie – given she’s 57 years younger than me – I’m always a beat behind. Once she made me try and say ‘chubby bunny’ while putting marshmallows in my mouth… it’s all very silly stuff. But perhaps that adds to our appeal. The fame has crept up on us. Livie phoned me one Sunday evening in 2019. ‘Have you seen how many views we’ve had?’ she said. I logged on – 28,000! Yes, thousand. By the next morning it was 56,000. And in the past year, we have grown to 146,000 followers. A few weeks ago, we were invited to London to record an advert for TikTok. You’ve got to laugh. There we were with youngsters who make a living posting on the internet and then there’s my granddaughter and me. Livie’s the real star – she’s artistic director and producer, I’m just her fall guy, or should that be fall Gran!

Livie says: ‘I’m so proud of Gran. And this has definitely made us closer – it’s something we can share… we didn’t really have anything else to do before. My Gran is a good sport.’

The first Monday in January is known as Divorce Day, as record numbers of unhappy couples file for divorce. Here, award-winning family lawyer Laura Naser answers five of her most asked questions...

t’s really important to get legal advice, even if it’s only a one-off visit. You don’t have to tell your partner that you’re going to a lawyer; but you need to speak to one to discover your options and make an informed decision. My first meetings with clients tend to range from 90 minutes to two hours – especially if there are children involved. It’s all about how your relationship can be unravelled, whether you’re married or unmarried. I’m happy to speak to clients on the phone briefly beforehand to get a feel for the issues. I ask them to send me a background chronology of key information about the relationship – including finances. The more info you have in black and white before a meeting, the easier it will be, especially during an emotional situation. It’s easy, when you get upset, to forget things. As I say in my book: ‘Take control of what you can, empower yourself with knowledge and manage your own feelings and actions.’

How much does it cost?

2 L

awyers charge differently. I charge on a time-spent basis, so however long I spend with you or spend working on your case, you’re charged for that. My hourly rate is £290, plus VAT, but depending on where you live, and the seniority of the lawyer, that will differ. Always go to a family lawyer – it’s more efficient, and the more experience the

better. Legal aid is still available but only in very limited cases, mostly for those involved in domestic abuse allegations. Even then, it can be means-tested and not everyone will qualify. There are other options: A Have you got any savings? B A credit card you can put it on? C Family and friends you can borrow from? D Could you get a bank loan?

34 FACEBOOK.COM/BESTMAGAZINE

If none of those are an option, there are specific litigation loan funders available, which have become popular over the last few years. You have to go through your lawyer to apply – and satisfy the lender that you will be able to pay it back. You may be able to apply to court for a legal services order, which is available during a divorce financial case. If you can show your ex can afford it, you can make an application via your lawyer for them to give you a lump sum towards your legal fees.

What about our children?

deally, plan together how you are going to tell your children. Agree a joint message and don’t lay any blame on either parent, regardless of what the truth is. Children should not be privy to that level of adult detail and so it’s got to be very much, ‘We both love you and it’s not your fault’. Absolutely do not draw the children into any disputes. Cafcass – which stands for Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (cafcass.gov.uk) – is the family court’s own advisors and they have a really good website with lots of useful information. Resolution.org.uk is set up by family law professionals, with some really good information on supporting children through separations. There’s an incorrect view that the mother has more

Who gets what financially?

he courts treat married and unmarried couples very, very differently. If you’re unmarried there are no claims against each other by virtue of that relationship, as there is in marriage. If you are unmarried, your claims really come down just to your children or any shared assets. You don’t have any claims for maintenance in your own right. If you’re married, however, the courts have much more wide-reaching abilities to move money and assets between spouses. The

rights to care for their children. It’s the parent who has the children more often who has the right to receive child maintenance. And if there’s a 50/50 shared care then there’s no liability for child maintenance unless you’re in the high-earning bracket. There’s a statutory formula for child maintenance – which applies whether married or not. So, how can you make the person moving out pay up? The Child Maintenance Service – a government body – are the only people who have the ability to deal with this. So, if someone doesn’t pay, you go to them. They can find financial details out about the parent who’s moved out – for example, what they are earning and can even go to HMRC. Once they assess what is due they can take action and enforce payment – and if needed, take court action on your behalf.

starting point is fairness and that tends to mean equality as a starting point. The main factor in a divorce negotiation is need. For example: Income needs: What you spend every day on yourself and your children One-off needs: Christmas expenses, birthday presents, insurance, one-off bills Capital needs: A home, a car, furnishings, phone, stamp duty, moving costs Retirement needs: For your pensions Needs are different in each case, but the rule, generally, is the children’s needs are prioritised, so the scales tend to tip towards the parent who is the main carer.

What if we can’t agree?

veryone dreams of a friendly divorce. The reality is that this is an emotive time and prime territory for disputes. A huge chunk of my book talks about what to do if you can’t agree to agree. Key points are communication. Think about your tone; what you are saying – is it vital that you say it or are you just trying to point score? Pick your battles. A good test is to ask yourself: ‘Am I being reasonable?’ Ignore the ‘pub divorce lawyer’ who says, ‘My mate went through this...’ – it only passes on preconceived ideas that can be wildly untrue or irrelevant to your case. If face-to-face disputes are an issue, and you’re struggling verbally, use email, or meeting in a public place. If this doesn’t work, try mediation. Mediation is largely privately funded – but it’s one person’s hourly rate as opposed to two lawyers negotiating for you, so it can be more cost-effective and far quicker if you’re sitting together in a room rather than going through lawyers. Mediation isn’t for everyone but there is a way of doing shuttle mediation where you are sat in different rooms, if you can’t bear to be in the same one. But use court as a last resort! I’VE LOST MY FRIENDS AND I’M LONELY

L

ast year, I divorced my husband of 23 years, a difficult decision which neither he, nor our mutual friends, took lightly. I’d been unhappy for a long time and in the end, he’d fallen out of love with me, too. I feel so lonely now that I’m on my own, but worst of all, I’ve lost a lot of friends. None of our circle wants to see me and obviously blame me for all of this, they’re only there for him. Now, I feel worse than before the divorce. Tammy, Hull I’ve walked in your shoes. My husband left me for a younger woman – I was only 37 at the time, and the vast majority of my lifelong friends went with him. I still haven’t worked out why. I think some people think a divorced woman is a potential jinx on their marriage, as if, somehow, divorce is contagious. It still hurts, 20 years later. I am so sorry for your pain and isolation. All you can do is rebuild your life with brand new friends – the network you truly deserve. Get out and about. Invite work colleagues over for a spag bol. Open yourself up to people and experiences you’ve never had before. You’ll see your circle expand in directions you wouldn’t ever have dreamed.

WEIGHT OF THE WORLD ON HIS SHOULDERS!

n August last year, my husband and I agreed that, even though it would be hard, we’d let go of the family restaurant business before the start of 2020. It’s haemorrhaging money and taking such a toll on our relationship and family life. But, because my other half worked there as a young man with his father, he’s having a terrible time letting go. Especially now our son is the same age he was, when he started working there. I understand the nostalgia, but we’re broke and we’d have a better life without this chain around our necks! Nicole, Birmingham

Many of us are emotionally entangled with our jobs. They’re not just a means to making money. Our work is part of our identity and, in your husband’s case, family history. The idea of getting rid of the restaurant his family established tugs at his heartstrings. Eventually, he will come to terms with the fact that he has no choice – but it’s clear that, although walking away makes financial sense, it’s agonisingly difficult for him. Stay practical, but try to be empathetic here. He’s on a difficult journey, and needs your help. 36 FACEBOOK.COM/BESTMAGAZINE

650g potatoes, washed and diced (no need to peel), 110g low-fat spreadable or squeezy cheese, 1 chicken stock cube dissolved in 200ml boiling water, low-calorie cooking spray, 1 small red onion, peeled and diced, 350g leeks, trimmed, washed and thinly sliced, 350g bacon medallions, diced, 2 tsp garlic granules, 1tsp mustard powder, 60g spinach, 80g reducedfat Cheddar, 100g quark, sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 Preheat the oven to 220°C (fan 200°C/gas mark 7). Put the diced potatoes into a pan of water and bring to the boil, then simmer until they are cooked through but still holding their shape well. This should take about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and drain. 2 Spray a pan with low-calorie cooking spray, then sauté the onion and leeks over a medium heat for 3-4 minutes, until they start to soften. Add the bacon, 1 tsp of garlic granules and the mustard powder. Continue to cook for around 10 minutes. Add the spinach and cook until it has lightly wilted. 3 Pour in the stock and cook for 2 minutes. Stir in the spreadable cheese, then remove the pan from the heat. Make a well in the centre of the mixture and add the quark. To prevent the quark from splitting, work from the centre out until fully combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 4 If your frying pan isn’t suitable for the oven, transfer the mixture to an ovenproof dish. Sprinkle half the cheese over the top evenly, then cover with the cooked potato. Sprinkle the remaining garlic granules over the top, season, then cook in the oven for 15 minutes. 5 Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top and return to the oven until the cheese has melted and started to colour. Remove from the oven and serve. The recipe can also be frozen once cooled. 38 FACEBOOK.COM/BESTMAGAZINE

120g wholemeal bread, ½ tsp garlic granules, ¼ tsp chilli powder (hot or mild, depending on taste), ½ tsp sea salt, 300g chicken breast (all skin and visible fat removed), 1 egg, lowcalorie cooking spray 1 Preheat the oven to 170ºC (fan 150ºC/gas mark 3). Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. 2 In a mini electric chopper or food processor, blitz the wholemeal bread into fine crumbs. Place into a shallow dish with the garlic granules, chilli powder and salt and mix well. 3 Dice the chicken into bite-

Put the chicken into the breadcrumbs, a few pieces at a time. Shake the chicken around in the breadcrumbs to coat and place each piece onto the baking tray. Repeat until all the chicken is coated in breadcrumbs. If you have any breadcrumbs left over, dip the breaded chicken into the egg again, then back into the crumbs for an extra crispy coating! 4 Spray the chicken with lowcalorie cooking spray and pop in the oven for 20–25 minutes until golden and the chicken pieces are cooked through. The chicken can also be frozen once cooled.

French toast is a go-to quick meal. Combine with sautéed mushrooms and you have a super tasty, super quick brunch, packed with goodness. My youngest, Luca, is addicted to mushrooms so we make a version of this recipe pretty much twice a week for lunch! PER SERVING CALS 328 FAT 19.5g SERVES 4 6 free range eggs Four slices of white bread 4tbsp butter 2tbsp olive oil 625g closed cup (or chestnut) mushrooms, sliced 1tbsp lemon juice Few sprigs parsley, finely chopped 1 Whisk the eggs, season generously with salt and pepper, then dip a slice of bread in the eggs, turning over to coat the other side. Immediately place the bread into a hot frying pan with half the butter. Cook for a minute then turn over to do the other side, before placing into a warm oven (60ºC fan) until ready to use. Continue until all slices are coated. 2 Heat the remaining butter in the same pan with the

olive oil and once shimmering hot, pour in the mushrooms, stir and leave them to sit and fry – don’t season. After about three minutes, shake the pan to cook the other side, you want to cook mushrooms on a high heat to evaporate any liquid from them and help colour them – this will prevent soggy mushrooms. 3 Just before serving, season with black pepper, a small squeeze of lemon juice and the chopped parsley. 4 Immediately, plate up the four pieces of French toast, divide the mushrooms over the top, season with a pinch of salt, and voila! TIP Mushrooms are so versatile. Sometimes I throw a couple of handfuls of spinach into the pan to wilt down and place on the bread before topping with the mushrooms.

Dancing on Ice judge John Barrowman gives you the insider’s guide to the coolest show on TV… WELL, HELLO THERE...

LET THIS YEAR’S SKATE-OFF BEGIN!

I’m really delighted about my Dancing On Ice column! I can’t wait to keep all you readers up to date on the shenanigans, on and off the ice. Don’t forget, I was a contestant in series one in 2006, so I know how the celebrities feel when they skate out of that ice tunnel for the first time. We’re going to have a lot of fun… I can feel it.

Instagram/johnbarrowman

As the new judge in town, I don’t want comparisons with my predecessor, Jason Gardiner – we’ve been pals for 30 years. What I will say is, I’m settling in very well. Ashley Banjo and I are having a giggle. We’ll have a box of sweets on the floor between us, that we can pilfer when nobody’s looking!

I’ve noticed that a lot of contestants who should be practising on the ice as much as they can, have been on Instagram taking photos of themselves around the ice, near the ice... Others posting little videos of themselves on the ice. Guys – get with it! When the ball starts rolling on this show, you’re going to have to keep up – or you’re going home!

CAPRICE, I’M TALKING TO YOU!

A PAIN IN THE NECK...

HOLLY’S A HOOT!

As you may know, I had some problems with my poor neck late last year, but injections in my spine and vertebrae have helped with the pain. If I’d only relaxed, instead of running about like a maniac over Christmas in LA, that might have helped – but that’s not my style. I was cooking for 12 people, then jumping on a plane back to London to prepare for the Dancing On Ice launch show this Sunday.

I do seem to make Holly laugh on camera. She reminded me about this event we were both at where I picked her up and was spinning her around my waist. She said, ‘When you put me down, my wrap dress was halfway up my body – but I didn’t care, it was so much fun!’

1

START SIMPLE Listing your goals may sound silly, but it’s a good place to start. Write down short, medium or long-term financial goals for this year – like affording a big holiday or paying off your credit card debt. Having something specific to save for will help you focus and make it easier to sacrifice the small stuff to achieve it. Pin your list up somewhere to remind you on days you’re feeling tempted to splurge!

5 steps towards healthy finances

4

GET MORE MONEY -SAVVY Make this the year you never pay full price. There’s usually a discount, voucher code or cashback opportunity to be had. Whether it’s a meal out or switching insurers online, be alert to money-saving tricks and tips. You can find voucher codes online (or on apps), such as vouchercodes.co.uk, checkoutsmart.com or hotukdeals.com for example.

3

BE STRICT January is a great time to review your non-essentialbut-nice-to-have lifestyle spends to see what you still use, what you’ve forgotten about, what you really value and what you could cull or trim back. We’re looking at you – gym membership, music subscription service, extra TV channels, beauty treats and daily lattes.

KNOW YOUR BALANCE With so much of our spending on contactless cards, it’s easy to lose track. But people who check their bank balance every day tend not to overspend. So, whether you set up a text alert from your bank or use a budgeting app (like Yolt or Money Dashboard) or check your balanace when you pass an ATM, get into the habit! The best way to shift money into savings is to set up a direct debit. Do this at the start of the month – and if you have any spare cash left over, save or invest it.

5

PEP UP YOUR PENSION If your company has a pension scheme (and you earn more than £10,000) it’s a no-brainer to be enrolled. Whatever you’re contributing, your employer will match it up to a certain amount, but could you be putting in more this year? If you’re not sure how much to save to get the retirement you want, use the pension calculator at moneyadviceservice.org.uk to get an idea.

THEY SAID WHAT?! Robbie Williams recently said that former Take That bandmate Jason Orange had gone AWOL: ‘You know you can have that Find My Phone thing? All of Take That should have a Locate Jason Orange thing, because none of us know where he’s gone... I should hire a private detective – he finds out where Jason is, we inject him with a beeping thing, a chip, we know where he is at all times. I go the extra lengths for my Take That brothers.’

THE TRIAL OF CHRISTINE KEELER Sex, intrigue, betrayal – and amazing outfits. Episode one of this dramatisation of the scandal that gripped England back in the Sixties is on BBC iPlayer now.

...joining The Voice It’s been amazing. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted and more. I worried that people wouldn’t know who I am, but it’s all been a crazy dream come true. ...getting advice from Jennifer Hudson Will.i.am was telling a contestant the other day, ‘We really miss Jennifer’ and I was like, ‘OK!’ But then he said, ‘But we love Meghan.’ It is tough, because I’m her number one fan and it’s hard to fill those shoes. I messaged her saying, ‘We talk about you every five minutes, everyone misses you, I love you, and any advice, please let me know!’ ...working with Will.i.am When I first got on to The Voice, he Insta messaged me and was like, ‘Congrats, welcome to The Voice’ and he gave me his number. I was like ‘Oh my God, I got Will.i.am’s number!’ …her feelings of insecurity I was on the chubbier side and we grew up on the beach, so everyone was always going there in bikinis so I was like, ‘I’d rather work in my parents’ jewellery store and hide because I don’t want to be in a bathing suit.’ I wanted to be a superstar but I was like, ‘How will I get there if I’m not comfortable in my own skin?’ ● The Voice is on ITV on Saturday at 8.30pm

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH best

‘It’s glitz and glamour with an edge’ Davina McCall, 52, is divorced from her former husband Matthew Robertson and is dating her long-term friend, hairdresser Michael Douglas. What sets The Masked Singer apart from other shows? It has all the glitz and glamour of other entertainment programmes, but a slight feeling of edginess because you’re never quite sure what’s going to walk out. It’s probably the craziest show I’ve ever worked on, where you end up with a crush on someone called The Monster –

when the only actual part of him you can see is his feet! How did you get on with the other judges? Jonathan and I have known each other for years. I fell in love with Rita and Ken was brilliant. As he is a seasoned pro and has already done two series, it made us feel like we were in safe hands. The acts come from a variety of backgrounds – was there much research needed to help out with your guessing? I just went on my knowledge

which, with three teenagers, is really good. I spend a lot of time discussing pop culture, reality TV, soap operas, all of that kind of stuff. Jonathan actually is like Wikipedia – he’s forensic in his knowledge of everything. How tight is the secrecy around the performers’ identity? The level of secrecy is insane. The celebs were always kept apart from the judges and presenters, in two completely different areas. I once saw somebody who still had a full-on helmet on their head and a sign on their T-shirt saying,

If you ever took part as a contestant, what would your character costume be? Obviously a cougar! If you were anonymous for the day, what would you do? I’d go to a beach and sunbathe topless. I miss that. I’m half French, and I spend a lot of time in France – seeing everyone on the beach topless makes me envious. ● The Masked Singer is on ITV on Saturday and Sunday at 7pm.

Tony Cowell BEST’S CELEBRITY INSIDER TALKS TO ITALIAN TENOR EXTRAORDINAIRE ANDREA BOCELLI egendary Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli has sold over 90 million albums and toured the world. In a career spanning over 30 years he has sung for Pope John Paul II, the Queen, Elizabeth Taylor and, in 2018, at the wedding of Princess Eugenie. Blind since the age of 12 (he suffered from ‘traumatic glaucoma’ following a childhood football accident), Bocelli has famously duetted with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Celine Dion and Dua Lipa. He tells best how he persuaded pop singer Ellie Goulding and

L

Hollywood actress Jennifer Garner to record duets for his new album… Ellie Goulding sings a track on your new album. Were you a fan? I didn’t really know her music before this – but I got to spend some time with her during and after recording and we now keep in touch. The song we do is called Return to Love, and it is a very beautiful song. I was struck by the range in her voice and the interpretation she was able to give to the song. She is a very talented singer. I get a lot of offers from people wanting to duet with me. This time I was very fortunate to have Ellie, and of course having Jennifer Garner

Ellie Goulding, who contributed to Andrea’s new album, told best: ‘It was a huge honour that the legendary Andrea Bocelli wanted me to feature on this song with him. I have always had an affinity with classical music and I’m a real sucker for a love song. It was also so much fun to sing in Italian – a real joy.’

ELLIE: ‘I’M A SUCKE!’R FOR A LOVE SONG

48 FACEBOOK.COM/BESTMAGAZINE

‘My sons a my great achieveme sing for the first time on this album was amazing. Your son, Matteo, who now has his own record deal, also sings on the album. You must be very proud... I am very happy, like any parent would be. I hope he achieves what he really wants with his music. To be the best at what you do you sometimes have to make sacrifices for the sake of your career, and sometimes that is hard to do. I would love him to follow in my footsteps – he has the passion for it. You tour so much. How do you relax when you’re not working? I love my horses, which I have at my home in the Italian countryside. It is here that I love to ride through the fields and the woods. This is my way of having time to myself. Because I am always on the road working, I like to stay at home and just be calm. I like my peace. When you were growing up, what music was playing in your house? I remember hearing the voice of Mario Lanza. He was very famous at that time. So, he had a great influence on me. He is the voice that inspired me to want to sing. There are many great opera voices from the past. But Mario Lanza I will always remember. My mother bought me his records.

You mother loved opera – but your father wasn’t a fan, was he? No, he hated the opera and didn’t really understand why I loved it so much. So, he insisted that I first study before becoming a singer. I had to compromise with him, and I studied law before I went on to become a professional singer. Did you have a happy upbringing? Yes, I did. I grew up on a vineyard in Tuscany. I always say I am a happy man because I was so loved by my family. This is very important in life. I am very fortunate in that way. I had a very balanced upbringing and was taught the right way by my parents. Is it true that before you were famous, you used to sing in piano bars? Yes, that is true. When I was in my 20s I was having singing lessons during the day then I would perform in piano bars in the nights. I was a big fan of Frank Sinatra, so I would play a lot of his songs. For me, Sinatra had everything, the voice, the songs and his stage presence. What would you say is your greatest achievement in life? I would say that at this stage in my career, I am very proud of my sons. They have shown they are happy with their studies. They have no health

problems; they have no issues with drugs or alcohol. They are happy with their career paths. So, my achievement is that my family is united. That makes me very happy.

‘I always say I am a happy man because I was so loved by family – this is very important’

Do you ever see a time when you might retire from touring? I think I will know when that time comes. When my voice can no longer be as strong or beautiful as it needs to be, to perform at the very top level. So one day, yes, that time will come. But not soon, I hope! New track Return to Love and album Sì Forever: The Diamond Edition are out now (Decca Records). Andrea Bocelli returns to the O2, London in October. For tickets, see andreabocelli.com.
