REFLECTION ALONG THE TIERGARTEN 114TH JOHN STEWARDSON MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP IN ARCHITECTURE
“REFLECTION ALONG THE TIERGARTEN” IS A DESIGN PROPOSAL FOCUSED AROUND THE SUBTLE INTERVENTION OF HARDSCAPE, LANDSCAPE AND LIGHTING IN AN EFFORT TO CREATE A SEAMLESS TRANSITION FOR PEDESTRIANS ALONG THE EBERTSTRABE IN BERLIN GERMANY. THE ABILITY TO CREATE A TRANSFORMATIVE SPACE OF SEPARATION AND CONNECTION WAS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE DESIGN PROPOSAL. “REFLECTION ALONG THE TIERGATEN” SOUGHT TO DO SO IN SUCH A WAY THAT WOULD ALLOW FOR A PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR THE OCCUPANTS OF THE SPACE. THE DELICATE INTERVENTION TAKES NOTES FROM THE EXISITING SITE CONDITIONS – USING THE TREE LINES AS AN OPPORUNITY TO CREATE A NATURAL SUGGESTION OF DIRECTION – WHILE CAPITALIZING ON THE DIFFERENTIATED HEIGHTS ALONG THE PATH TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR DESIGN. ‘REFLECTION ALONG THE TIERGARTEN’ IS A DESIGN FOCUSED AROUND PASSIVE TRANSFORMATION, CREATING A SPACE THAT PROVIDES A SEAMLESS CONNECTION ALONG THE EBERTSTRABE, WHILE RELYING ON GRADIENTS TO OFFER A SPACE THAT BRINGS YOU TO A CENTRAL AREA OF REFLECTION. VARYING LAYERS OF LIGHTING AND LANDSCAPE DENSITY WERE USED IN AN EFFORT TO CREATE A SUBTLE EXPERIENTIAL CHANGE ALONG THE PATHWAY. BOTH IN ALTERNATING LEVELS OF LIGHT INTENSITY AND LANDSCAPE ORGANIZATION, THE USERS EXPERIENCE IS THAT OF SUBTLE TRANSFORMATION AND REDIRECTION, FORCING THE USER TO CONSTANTLY DISCOVER A DIFFERENT AREA OF THE DESIGN, AND IN TURN CREATE A DIFFERENT VISUAL EXPERIENCE. THE CORE OF THE DESIGN AREA OF REFLECTION IS FOCUSED AROUND THE AREA OF REFLECTION. WHILE LOCATED AT THE LOWEST ELEVATION, THE COMBINATION OF INTENSE LIGHT, MIMINIZED NATURAL LANDSCAPING AND COMPETING HEIGHTS VIA THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT, THE CORE OF THE DESIGN IS MEANT AS AN AREA OF RESPITE AND REFLECTION, WITH A SLIGHT NOD TO THE HISTORY OF THE SITE VIA A CLEAR DISTINCTION IN THE MATERIAL CHOICES MADE. THE OVERALL DESIGN IS MEANT TO CREATE AN INTERVENTION THAT IS BALANCED REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU ENTER ALONG THE SITE. AREAS OF EGRESS ARE PROVIDED ALONG THE PATH, BUT STILL FORCE THE USER TO EXPERIENCE THE CHANGE IN ENVIRONMENT--- HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPORTANCE OF SCALE, DENSITY AND LIGHTING.

TOMLINSON THEATER RE-DESIGN
GROUND FLOOR PLAN
THE INITIAL IMPETUS BEHIND MY DESIGN WAS AN ATTEMPT TO UNDERSTAND AND DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE “DARK SPACE” AND “LIGHT SPACE” ELEMENTS OF THE PROGRAM. DOMINATED BY THE “DARK SPACE” ELEMENTS SUCH AS THEATERS, MEDIA BLACK BOX, FILM VIEWING ROOMS, ETC. THIS DESIGN IS FIRST AND FOREMOST A RESPONSE TO THE VOLUMETRIC DOMINANCE OF THAT DARK SPACE PROGRAMM, A SCHEME TO INTRODUCE LIGHT AND TRANSPARENCY THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. THIS GOAL IS ACCOMPLISHED BY ALLOWING THE CIRCULATION, SOMETHING THAT IS TYPICALLY HIDDEN WITHIN THE BUILDING VOLUME, TO BE CELEBRATED AS AN EXPRESSED DESIGN ELEMENT WHICH ALLOWS NATURAL LIGHT TO PENETRATE THE BUILDING AND REVEAL THE ACTIVITY WITHIN IT. THE INTRODUCTION OF NATURAL LIGHT BECOMES A THEME THAT INFLUENCES A WHOLE SPECTRUM OF DESIGN CHOICES, INCLUDING THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM AND MATERIAL SELECTIONS IN AN ATTEMPT TO CREATE AN ARCHITECTURE THAT OVERCOMES THE BURDEN OF MASSIVE DARK SPACES AND APPEARS BOTH LIGHT AND LIGHT-FILLED.

WHEN LOOKING AT DAYLIGHTING CONDITIONS, WE DEVELOPED TWO SOLUTIONS THAT ARE TAILORED DIFFERENTLY TO THE LOBBY AND THE LOUNGE ‘PODS,’ ALLOWING FOR SEPARATE RESPONSES TO THE INHABITANT’S CIRCADIAN RHYTHM.

AS A GRADUATE REPRESENTATIVE FOR TEMPLE UNIVERSITY, THE MEIJI UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL SUMMER WORKSHOP WAS A WEEK-LONG DESIGN INTENSIVE COLLABOARTION BETWEEN MEIJI UNIVERSITY AND FIFTEEN INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITIES. AS A TEAM OF FIVE, ‘nakanoREINVENTED’ WAS A DESIGN PROPOSAL AIMED AT BLENDING THE COMMUNITIES OF NAKANO CENTRAL AND NAKANO BROADWAY. THE WARD OF NAKANO IS PRIMARILY RESIDENTIAL, WITH A LARGE-SCALE TRANSIT CENTER AT THE HEART OF THE AREA. THE DESIGN WAS IN RESPONSE TO THE HARSE CULTURAL AND PHYSICAL DIVIDE ALONG NAKANO DORI. ASKED TO COME UP WITH A SOLUTION TO PRESENT TO NAKANO WARD OFFICIALS, THE PROPOSAL WAS LOOKING AT CREATING A CULTURAL EPICENTER ALONG THE STATION LINE, WITH STRONG FOCUS ON RETAIL AND THE CREATION OF A CENTRAL MUSIC HALL EMBEDDED IN THE COMMUNITY CENTER. SUPPORTED BY CIRCULATION, OPEN GREEN-SPACE AND CLEAR SIGHT LINES, THE DESIGN AIMED TO PROMOTE INTRIGUE.

THE LOUNGE PODS BRING THE LIGHTING SCHEME OF THE LOBBY TO A PERSONAL, CONTROLLABLE EXPERIENCE. IN MOST HOSPITALS, PATIENTS, VISITORS AND HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS DO NOT HAVE THE LUXURY OF KEEPING A NORMAL SCHEDULE, ESSENTIALLY MAKING A HEALTHY CIRCADIAN RHYTHM IMPOSSIBLE. THE LOUNGE POD IS AN INTERACTIVE CAPSULE THAT ALLOWS THE INHABITANT TO BECOME FULLY IMMERSED IN ‘PERSONALIZED LIGHT THERAPY.’ WHATEVER TYPE OF LIGHT A PERSON NEEDS, WARM TO COOL, BRIGHT TO DIM, DAWN TO DUSK, THE SWOOING SHAPE OF THE PODS WRAPS THEM IN LIGHT PROVIDED BY STATE-OF-THE-ART MULTI-COLORED LEDS AND THE SOFT GLOW OF OLED RIBBONS.

THE LOBBY UTILIZES A PANELED LED DESIGN THAT HAS DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE OUTSIDE LIGHT, ADJUSTING THE OVERALL AMBIANCE AND LIGHT INTENSITY TO THE LOBBY FLOOR. THE GOAL OF THE ARRATED PANEL DESIGN WAS TO PROVIDE A NATURAL LIGHTING TRANSITION FOR THOSE WHO HAVE MADE THE HOSPITAL A COMMON-PLACE IN THEIR DAY-TO-DAY LIVES. THE SUBTLE RE-CREATION OF NATURAL LIGHT ALLOWS FOR A CALMING ENVIRONMENT. THE INTERIOR PANEL ARRAY USES WAMNING MATERIAL IN ADDITION TO HIGH-END LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY TO PROVIDE A BALANCE OF NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL LIGHT.

BODY+SPACE MOVEMENT STUDY
THE ‘BODY AND SPACE’ PROJECT WAS A SEMESTER LONG STUDY FOCUSED AROUND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BODY AND THE SPACE IN WHICH IT NOT ONLY OCCUPIES, BUT ALSO CREATES. THE INITIAL STAGES OF THE STUDY FOCUSED ON THE CREATION AND DOCUMENTATION OF THE HUMAN BODY DURING A DESIGNED AND REHEARSED SEQUENCE OF MOVEMENTS. OUR ROLE AS ARCHITECTURAL STUDENTS WAS TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE MOVEMENTS CREATED AND OCCUPIED SPACE --- AND IN TURN HOW SPACE CAN BE DESIGNED AROUND SUCH MOVEMENTS.
SECTION A
SECTION B
EACH SECTION OF THE MODEL AIMED TO CREATE A VERY DETAILED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOLID + VOID, LIGHT + DARKNESS AND THE PATH CREATED BY EACH MOVEMENT MADE IN THE SERIES. EACH SPECIFIC SECTION SHOWCASED THE DIFFERENT MOMENTS CHARACTERIZED BY THE PASSAGE OF SPACE AND THE DIRECT RELATIONSHIP TO THE QUALITY OF LIGHT THOSE MOVEMENTS HAVE CREATED. SUBTLE CHANGES IN MATERIAL DENSITY AND CONSTRUCTION AIMED TO COMPLIMENT THE AMOUNT OF SPACE BEING CREATED BY THE MOVEMENTS, AS WELL AS THE ACCESS TO LIGHT THROUGHOUT THE SPATIAL EXPERIENCE.
THE CULMINATION OF THE PROJECT ENDED IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN OF AN ARCHITECTURAL EXPERIENCE UNIQUE TO THE SEQUENCE OF MOVEMENTS DIRECTLY RELATED TO SPACE, LIGHT AND DESIGN.
