TOMLINSON THEATER + THE FILM AND MEDIA ARTS DEPARTMENT: REDESIGN PROPOSAL FALL 2014

SITE PLAN
THE INITIAL IMPETUS BEHIND MY DESIGN WAS AN ATTEMPT TO UNDERSTAND AND DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE “DARK SPACE” AND “LIGHT SPACE” ELEMENTS OF THE PROGRAM, DOMINATED BY THE “DARK” SPACE ELEMENTS SUCH AS THE THEATERS, MEDIA BLACK BOX, FILM VIEWING ROOMS, ETC. THIS DESIGN IS FIRST AND FOREMOST A RESPONSE TO THE VOLUMETRIC DOMINANCE OF THAT DARK SPACE PROGRAM, A SCHEME TO INTRODUCE LIGHT AND TRANSPARENCY THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING. THIS GOAL IS ACCOMPLISHED BY ALLOWING THE CIRCULATION, SOMETHING THAT IS TYPICALLY HIDDEN WITHIN THE BUILDING VOLUME, TO BE CELEBRATED AS AN EXPRESSED DESIGN ELEMENTM WHICH ALLOWS NATURAL LIGHT TO PENETRATE THE BUILDING AND REVEAL THE ACTIVITY WITHIN IT. THE INTRODUCTION OFNATURAL LIGHT BECOMES A THEME THAT INFLUENCES A WHOLE SPECTRUM OF DESIGN CHOICES, INCLUDING THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM AND MATERIAL SELECTIONS IN AN ATTEMPT TO CREATE AN ARCHITECTURE THAT OVERCOMES THE BURDEN OF MASSIVE DARK SPACES AND APEARS BOTH LIGHT AND LIGHT-FILLED.
