Echolands Press Release: New Vintages

What’s happening in the vineyard Harvest 2021 with Doug frost

“Harvest 2021 is barely half over but, if this were a normal year, it would just be beginning. Like everything 2021, it’s all as weird as can be. Though it generally lacks the destructive smoke from the Willamette Valley that made 2020 so awful (well, among other aspects of that annus horribilus), 2021 saw the hottest temperatures on record in our vineyards. Not only did the heat accelerate ripening, but the vines had to protect the seeds by toughening up the skins. Sugar to juice ratios are way down even while yields were already dramatically decreased. The wines may be tough and unyielding from some; but if we do it right, they will be powerful and compact. Some vintages are about the vineyards, but this one will be about the winemakers.” –Doug Frost MS, MW

Doug Frost’s Echolands Winery Expands Portfolio with New Product Releases – Now in their Second Year, Echolands Winery by Doug Frost, MS/MW, introduces two new releases and four new vintages from Walla Walla available this fall – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 15, 2021 (Walla Walla, Washington) – Echolands Winery has announced six fall wine releases, including two new red wines – Pepper Bridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 and Blue Mountain Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2019 – and four vintage updates to core labels: 2019 Les Collines Syrah, 2019 Seven Hills Vineyard Red, 2020 RivièreGalets Grenache and 2020 Poet-Nat. The new releases are the product of dynamic winemaking duo, Doug Frost, Master Sommelier, Master of Wine and winemaker Taylor Oswald. Together, they harness Frost’s discerning palate and Oswald’s technical winemaking skills to expertly craft wines that echo and respect the landscape.

Echolands new product releases include the following wines (tasting notes by Doug Frost MS/MW): o

o

Pepper Bridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 – Walla Walla Valley AVA. 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot. Sitting on a hill in a cooler spot in the Walla Walla Valley, Pepper Bridge Vineyard has emerged as a source of bold and sturdy Cabernets and Merlots. The 2019 vintage saw several frosts before harvest and our nerves were on edge until the grapes were in and fermenting. As it transpired, we fell in love with our small production of Pepper Bridge Cab - it didn't suffer from the cold, and even benefited from it. 13.4% ABV (Available early 2022) Blue Mountain Cabernet Franc 2019 – Walla Walla Valley AVA. 97% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot. This is one of those wines that started its life as a potential blender and quickly demanded its own bottle. The wine em-bodies precisely what we hoped to achieve: the ideal Caber-net Franc character of lavender, rose petal, herbs and blue and red fruits, along with the generosity and richness that Walla Walla can bring. Nestled in the beautiful Blues, Blue Mountain Vineyard is one of the coolest sites in Walla Walla Valley, and our Cabernet Franc benefits from this lovely environment. 13.6% ABV

New vintages of Echolands core labels that were launched and sold out in 2020 are now available and include: o o o o

2020 Grenache, Rivière-Galets Vineyard – 100% Grenache. 12% ABV 2019 Syrah, Walla Walla Valley – 98% Syrah, 2% Viognier. 12.8% ABV 2020 Poet-Nat, Seven Hills Vineyard – 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. 12.5% ABV (no sulfur added) 2019 Seven Hills Vineyard Red – 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. 14% ABV

D 020 GRENACHE RIVIERE-GALETS VINEYARD Walla Walla Valley AVA

Composition: 100% Riviere-Ga lets Vineyard 100% Grenache

W hile the "stones" portion of Walla Walla (a

certain winery w on't let us use the more common word) is highly prized by some, we're not

so enamored of the high pH's and the fat and gooey mouthfeel. But having said that, this rocky

region has an alluring quality if you can keep the gras in check. So we harvested our Grenache early

and then aged the wine in stainless steel drums, in an effort to highlight the fruit brightness and down play its tendency to over-ripeness. We finished a

third of the wine in neutral French oak. While this might be ideal with a chill on it for a hot day, the

ECHO LAND

wine has a more compelling side and even more surprising depth to it.

s SYRAH WALLA WALLA VALLEY Walla Walla Valley AVA Composition: 98% Syrah, 2% Viognier Our commitment to Walla Walla Valley is steadfast; our block

of Les Collines Vineyard is here

supplemented by fruit from the stonier areas

of the

Walla Walla Valley. Our preference for only light

amounts of new oak had to accommodate the richer Syrah style that the "stones" produces, but we stayed

true to our use

of only 500L French puncheons.

SEVEN HILLS VINEYARD Walla Walla Valley AVA

Composition: 100% Seven Hills Vineyard 100% Cabernet Franc Pet-Nat, or petillant naturellement, is the Old School way of creating sparkling wine in which active yeasts remain in the bottle you are holding and continue to create bubbles. Though tiny amounts of sulfite have been used since Roman times to help stabilize wine, pet-not wines typically use very low sulfur or none at all (that's the way we do ours - adding no sulfite). Fol lowing in the footsteps of our French progenitors, we disgorge the wine after a few months on the lees, so it is clean and clear, very much alive, bubbly and fresh. We call it "poet-not", well, just because.
