BORDEAUX TODAY THE BORDEAUX VINEYARD Bordeaux is located in Southwest France and is adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. Bordeaux’s 65 AOC’s are segmented by three waterways: the Garonne and Dordogne rivers and the Gironde, a 50-mile-long estuary flowing northward into the Atlantic.

The reputation of Bordeaux wines owes much to their diversity: the variety of soils, microclimates, and talented winegrowers, and the meticulous blending of world-renowned grape varieties, have made Bordeaux synonymous with quality and elegance.

TALK

“I LIKE RED BLENDS AND MY BUDGET IS $20. WHAT’S A GREAT OPTION FROM BORDEAUX?” Bordeaux is the home of red-blends. I would recommend a Bordeaux AOP, Bordeaux Supérieur or Côtes de Bordeaux, for an entry-level Bordeaux. “I LIKE TO DRINK DRY WHITES. WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FROM BORDEAUX?” If you’re looking for something vibrant and fruity, look to Entre-Deux-Mers. A white from Graves or Pessac-Leognan will be more structured and generous. “I AM A FAN OF SMOOTHER, MORE MELLOW REDS.” A red blend that is more Merlot-dominant will have the round texture you’re looking for: a wine from Bordeaux’s Right Bank (Pomerol or Saint-Émilion) or Côtes de Bordeaux are very nice choices. “I LIKE MY REDS TO BE BIG, BOLD, AND TANNIC.” If you like bold, age-worthy wines, look to Bordeaux’s Left Bank. Bottles labeled Médoc AOP will be more budget-friendly, while smaller sub-appellations in the Haut-Médoc (Pauillac, Margaux, Saint-Julien, and Saint-Estèphe) will be in the premium price range.

KING TO YOUR CUSTOMER

“I NEED A WINE FOR THANKSGIVING AROUND THE $20 MARK.” A vibrant and fruity Sauvignon-blanc based wine from Entre-Deux-Mers is a great aperitif to precede a multi-course meal. For the main dishes, a generous white from Pessac-Léognan or Graves or a medium-bodied red from the Côtes or Cru Bourgeois regions pair with a wide variety of foods, including turkey. For an unexpected Thanksgiving wine pairing, try a sweet Bordeaux. “I’M LOOKING FOR A SWEET WINE - CAN YOU RECOMMEND A NICE BOTTLE FROM BORDEAUX?” If you’re looking for something smooth and fruity, look for a sweet wine from Premières Côtes de Bordeaux or Graves. For more unctuous and intense aromatics, I would recommend a bottle from Sauternes, Loupiac, or SainteCroix-du-Mont.

CAN YOU RECOMMEND THE BEST BORDEAUX TO GIVE AS A GIFT? Bordeaux has a range of styles that are excellent for gifting. Choose from any of the following depending on the receiver’s preference: Red: Left Bank: Haut-Médoc; Right Bank: Saint-Émilion Dry white - Pessac-Léognan Sweet white: Sauternes Sparkling: Crémant de Bordeaux

Chateau Puybarbe Château Puybarbe is situated at the highest elevation of the Côtes de Bourg appellation looking over the Gironde estuary on the right bank of Bordeaux. The 41-hectare vineyard comprises predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and is cultivated according to sustainable philosophies. Château Puybarbe uses no herbicides or chemical fertilizers and is both HVE (High Environmental Value) and ISO 14001 certified. Modern winery integrates many technical advances at the service of a traditional know-how respectful of the grapes and the wine, and with a clear objective to be one of the best producers in AOP “Côtes de Bourg”.

Vineyards

The vineyards sit on a south-sloping sun-drenched plateau on the highest point of the appellation Côtes de Bourg. Vines are planted at 5,000 plants per hectare in calcareous-clay soils. Average age of vines is 29 years, oldest parcels 75 years. The vineyard is managed sustainably. Natural weeds between the rows absorb excess moisture and promote microbial life in the soil. The vines are pruned to the double Guyot method, cultivated according to sustainable viticulture practices and with a strict control of yields.

Winemaking

Meticulously selected grapes entered first a 4-day cold maceration, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation to retain the purity of fruit, elegance, and freshness. Long and gentle 60-day extraction, parcel by parcel vinification, racking three times in vats and two times in barrels. Aging 22 months in French oak barrels (50% new, 50% second round). Barrels came from three various coopers with light to medium toasting and additional aging for 8 months in bottles.

Chateau Puybarbe – Finnish purity, French tradition combined

Hundreds of years old Château Puybarbe estate was transferred to Finnish ownership by Riku and Anna Väänänen during 2016-2018. This high-quality wine-producing estate enjoys a prime location on one of the highest hills in Bordeaux wine region, east of the Gironde River Gulf, opposite the Margaux appellation. Its calcareous-clay soils produce excellent wine of the classic, but somehow surprisingly modern Bordeaux character. The estate owns about 41 hectares of vineyards, about 80% of Merlot and the rest of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec varieties.

Chateau Puybarbe does not use any herbicides or chemical fertilizers and is has the highly esteemed HVE (High Environmental Value) certification. Vineyards are cultivated according to sustainable practices promoting the biodiversity of the nature and microbial life in the soils.

The respect for nature and perfection in winemaking is clearly present in Chateau Puybarbe wines and the owner family, winemaker and the long time employed team - all share the passion of producing excellent wines, wines that tell the story of the soil, the vines and the weather– every year, year after year. www.chateaupuybarbe.com

Château Les Combes Acreage: 15 hectares Grape variety: Merlot 70 %, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%, and Cabernet Franc 10% Age of vines: 60 years Density: 5000 plants by hectare Production: 50 hectolitres by hectare Height: 20 in 45 meters Exposition: North and West Prune: Bordeaux (double guyot) Soil: clay

History: first family property acquired in the end of the 19th century, Chateau Les Combes is represented by a wide range of Bordeaux Blancs (dry and softness) today, RosĂŠ and LussacSaint-Emilion. The totality of the vineyard was planted in varieties of white grapes to 1970s. Today, 8 % of the vineyard is always worked with white Sauvignon and Semillon. It is one of the most qualitative wines of the appellation. Vineyard: at the pruning, the disbudding (cut a bud on two) is systematic. Dices which the vine pushes, the manual cut of suckers is realized (cut wood without grape absorbing of the sap) in the head of the vine stock and on the base. The thinning-outs of leaves allow the optimal maturation of grapes without changes. Grapes are harvested at maximum maturity, to increase the varietal expression and the style. Cellar: The grape harvest is pressing directly and put in a stainless steel tank. After day, this juice is cleaned out and the lowtemperature fermentation is realized on barrels. The maturing on fine lees is during 4 months with batonnage and ends by the assemblies and the preparation for the bottling. Wine: Deep red. The nose of red fruit and toasted flavors is very intense. The attack is smooth and generous, round and fruity mouth. Easy to drink and long, this wine shows the Bordeaux blend expression at full maturity with the three main grape varieties we use in our area.

WIN THE WINERY The huge modern winery spreads over 2000 m2 and has been dug into the hillside to guarantee natural freshness and isolation; it has been equipped with powerful material insuring coolness, temperature control and micro oxygenation by using physical methods, which therefore guarantee high and constant quality to their wines along with optimal conditions for vinification. Performance and tradition blend to highlight the Château Pique-Sègue’s particularity under the cellar master’s and the consulting oenologist’s watchful eye. Château Pique-Sègue is one of the main producer of Montravel AOC. Identified during the 14th century by the Archbishop of Bordeaux, the Château Pique-Sègue vineyard already had at the time the reputation of being the best producer of Montravel and Bergerac. Between Saint-Emilion and Bergerac, the vineyard is located on the hill of Libournais, an exceptional soil. Run by Philip and Marianne Mallard the 180 hectares (360 acres) property includes 66 hectares (132 acres) of grapes along with a large HBL Limousins cattle herd meant for HBL breeding purposes with high genetic values.

THE WINE

Montravel Rouge 15 months ageing process in French oak barrel Grape variety: Merlot 90 %, Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 % Montravel rouge is a sumptuous wine similar to great wines like Saint-Emilion. It meets very high standard productions conditions particularly in terms of plantation density (5000 vine plants per hectare) and restriction of yields. The clay-limestone soils of the hills of Libournais are the perfect soil for red vines to express their variety of flavors TASTING: It has the typical color of great wines, deep red garnet. The nose is expressive. It is well balanced on the palate and has a good tannic structure. Strong flavors are those of black fruits, cherry, underlined by woody vanilla. Finish is intense and lingering. SUGGESTION FOR ACCOMPANIMENT: Serve at room temperature, needs to be aerated before tasting. Refined dishes like game, poultry, red meat served in sauce or even strong cheese will be this great Merlot best allies. ALONG WITH: Venison, Foie Gras: even better with a great red wine! For dessert, a chocolate based anything of course!
