Greetings to our readers.

The gallery will be opened till 22nd of December, you may find the perfect Christmas gift in the gallery. Saturday & Sunday 10am-4pm. Or by appointment phone Robyn on 0147 686 816. We are located in the Therese Doyle Hall, next to the lovely Arboretum & visitors’ park, 12 Park St, East Gresford.

CULTURE VULTURE

Our featured artist this month is Christine Pike, who has worked from her home and studio located at Vacy for over 20 years. The gallery front entrance mural of the

majestic Black Cockatoo is by Christine, who also created the fabulous wildlife murals in the Arboretum.

Christine usually paints with water colours and mixed media. Christine's

art tells the story of her varied life, from a childhood in Lake Macquarie and a family of coal miners, to years living in rural NSW and riding and tending to horses. Drawing using ink and charcoal has been a constant in her life.

Christine’s work is represented in collections: Singleton Council, Cessnock Council, Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre, Max Walters, Minerals Council NSW, corporate and private in both Australia & UK.

Christine’s work is represented in Gresford Community Gallery and she will be conducting Sketch Club later this year. We will keep you informed on dates of forthcoming gallery events and workshops.

The Gallery has a Facebook page which will give regular news / updates of the Gallery’s forthcoming exhibitions and features on the artists. Please Like and follow our page.

Farmers Day Bowls at Dungog

Monday 2nd September saw the running of the annual Farmers Day Bowls tournament at Dungog. The sky was clear, the wind blew and the green was fast. The photo shows Keith Litchfield in delivery stride with lags flying horizontal. Some mastered the conditions better than others. Was it skill or luck? I’d say the former and there are some famous names in the winning team of K.Broadbent, M.Fisher, W.Lawrence and G.Smith from Lorn Park and the runners up, the Gresford

lads of D.Osmond, B.Pratten, T.Everett, W.Osmond. Congratulations to the winners, commiserations to the losers and a big thank you Dungog Bowling club for organising a wonderful day out.

The bowls schedule is busy with games happening here, there and everywhere. Nothing much to report on the club champs front other than the cream will rise to the top.

Keep bowling along

Local Gresford boy, Thomas Cowie competed in the NSW State CHS PSSA Championships at Olympic Park on the 11th September in the 12 year old 800m race.

Thomas made it to the final on 12th September representing the Hunter region and came a close 8th.

He also competed in the cross country earlier in the year and missed out on state selection by 2 places.

Apparently his training is playing as striker for the Gresford Vacy Scorpions Soccer Club under 13 year olds.

Go Thomas! Invitation to Blessing of a Memorial Plaque

The Anglican Parish of Gresford/ Paterson invites residents of the Paterson/Allyn Valley and wider community to the blessing of a plaque in remembrance of those who were denied burial in the consecrated ground of the churches throughout the parish.

The parish acknowledges the mistakes made in the past and recognise that these people were precious and valued by God. They left behind loved ones who did not receive the pastoral care that was needed from the church at that time.

The Blessing will be held in the grounds of St. Anne’s Anglican Church, Church Street, Gresford on Saturday 12th October at 11am.

Bishop Sonia will be presiding over the twenty minute Service. A BBQ lunch will be provided at the conclusion of the service. Everyone is most welcome.

GRESFORD DISTRICT LANDCARE GROUP

On Saturday 14 September the Gresford Landcare group held its last Saturday morning meeting at The Falls, East Gresford, hosted by Cas and Martin Addison, Xanthe and Toby. Twenty five people attended, and the topic for the day was a discussion on fish and other wildlife in our river system.

Martin gave a short history of the property, Ron Andrews gave an overview of the topic and everyone contributed their experiences with river wildlife. The history of river management has had a marked

effect on the fish population over the years. It was fascinating to hear so many varied experiences with fish, eels, platypus, carp etc. Ron reported on a hugely successful fishing day held recently at the Vacy river site.

The meeting included a most enjoyable walk along the river to The Falls.

The next meeting will be on Monday 14th October at 5PM. Venue, John and Lisa Connors property at Sugarloaf at 5pm. The Topic will be rainforest and birds.

What a season! Gresford Vacy Football Club has finished the most successful season in the club’s history with three championship trophies and another three runners-up medals.

The Under 12/02s were the first to claim the top prize for the Scorps with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Raymond Terrace at Fieldsend Oval, Maitland. The under-13s also spoiled the day for the Raymond Terrace club with a nice 1-0 victory in blustery conditions at Miller Park, Branxton. In the last game of the grand final weekend, the Saturday AA/01 team took control in their match against Charlestown to emerge convincing 3-1 victors at Fieldsend Oval.

The other three Scorps’ grand final teams played their hearts out but couldn’t quite manage to come away with wins.

The under 12/01s were locked 0-0 with Southern Lakes at full-time but fell 2-0 in extra time. The minor premier Friday A-grade team was totally outclassed in their 6-2 loss to Tenambit and the Over-35s went down 2-0 to Maitland.

The whole club came together to celebrate the successful season with junior and senior presentation events on September 14.

All Miniroos players were presented with trophies to commemorate Season 2024 and the interdistrict players (U12-U18) received club trackpants. Each team also acknowledged their most deserving players with special awards.

Six junior players were also applauded on notching up 10-year playing careers with the Scorps. Fox Nicholson

(U18s) as well as Harrison McCosker, Wil Burgmann, Deegan Holding, Jake Norton and Sean Dulhunty (U16s) were presented with commemorative 10-year club jackets to mark the occasion.

The big award – Clubman of the Year –was presented to Connor Morgan. Connor has been a Scorp for more than

15 years, plays in the Friday A-grade and winning Saturday all-age teams, co-coaches the U18s and is always integral in promoting Scorps culture by leading by example.

While the season is officially over, the committee is already working behind the scenes to build on the successes and ensure 2025 is another one of growth, on and off the field, for the mighty Scorps.

Craft Days – There were a couple of new faces at the craft gathering in August, with spinning, brioche knitting, bookmaking, and crocheting taking place. This continues to be a convivial and instructive gathering. All are welcome to come and to bring interested friends. Visitors to the area are also welcome. The dates for the rest of the year are 27th September; 25th October and 22nd November – from 9 to midday, at a cost of $3 for CWA members and $5 for nonmembers at the CWA Hall. Morning tea is provided.

Garden Plans – The plants sponsored by Dungog Council have been collected from Riverdene Nursery, where expert advice was given on selection and planting. A working bee was held on 15th September, but the small number in attendance meant that planting was not able to happen. Instead, trees were lopped, trimmed and chipped for mulch and some general tidying took place. We will continue to work on the garden as assistance and funding become available.

AGM – This will take place on 13th October at 2 for 2.30. Meetings generally take place on the first Saturday, but

What's On the Shelves?

George Orwell’s 1984 is considered a modern classic and a telling warning against totalitarianism. Newman has taken the character of Julia from Orwell’s novel and used her to expand our understanding of life in Airstrip One – or the London of 1984. She is a bold and flamboyant character whose enterprise is hinted at in the original novel, but here she is given a backstory that adds a great deal of depth.

Newman also expands the narrative frame beyond the claustrophobic world of 1984.Winston admires Julia’s initiative in finding isolated places to meet, and blackmarket goods, and we see her in action with these skills. Her way of life also shows us the relative privilege enjoyed by Winston, who lives alone in a flat, while she subsists in a heavily supervised female dormitory. A shocking incident early in the novel shows the precariousness of women’s lives.

Newman has piggy-backed on a much-admired book, but it is not a trifling achievement. She is faithful to the original but enhances it in a fascinating way. There are some major twists that still manage to remain consistent with Orwell’s material, but provide options that contradict the doom-laden inevitability of 1984. This is an excellent companion-piece.

All books reviewed are from the CWA library on a separate shelf so they are easy to find plus the reviews are in a folder. Also visit our street library.
