University of Kansas MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE
expected graduation 05. 2019 My interest in architecture stems from a love of art, culture, math and science. Cities and buildings capture my imagination and inspire me to look at the complex forces that drive a city or building to what it is. Architecture to me is the art of making place for people as people and their interaction within them are the most key element in design. As an architect, I hope to promote healthy and sustainable design in buildings. Therefore enhancing the lives of those that live and interact with the building.

CONTEXT The crossroad district is an up and coming neighborhood within Kansas City located south of the downtown, a major connecting area between downtown andthe Crown Plaza. It is home to the creative hub in Kansas City including many architecture and marketing firms as well as the Kaufman Preforming Arts Center.
1 CENTRAL TERRACE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Crossroads District Kansas City, MO
Architectural Design III Professor Nilou Vakil Fall 2016 Revit, AutoCad Photoshop, Illustrator Kansas City is an ever changing city that is in a position to revive itself and its neighborhoods. The Crossroads District is no exception. A district that was once filled with empty warehouse has been transformed by the artists of Kansas City. The district is now being called home to many young professionals in the area. With all the movement into this district, a school is a needed addition to provide education to the growing demographic of families that are now located within this neighborhood. This addition to the community will encourage growth within the city and create a lively district within which everyone wants to live and work.
1. Massing following the site boundaries
2. Ideal studios were configured within massing
3. Pulling of mass to highlight views and structural grid
COMMON CORE With the buildings massing following the sites boundaries a central core was created where the two masses intersect. This space became the central circulation for the building and main focal point. Illuminated by natural light and views to the Kaufman Preforming Arts Center.

CIRCULATION
ACTIVATE THE STREET Bringing an active street front to Central Street was a key aspect of the massing and design of the building. The Crossroad district is currently not very walkable. Through this design a treeline was added and large sidewalks were created to make a welcoming entrance into the school as well as city.

FLEXIBILITY IN CLASSROOM As education has grown with the times, so has educational design, there is a huge focus on community and collaborative space within a school. Seen through this school, a focus on a classroom collaborative learning studio which can be used by two classrooms had a huge design emphasis on the building. This design thought is illustrated from the facade with the class bump outs that let light into this space and illuminate the collaborative learning spaces from the facade.
2 FACADE STUDY
Bass Wood and Bristol Board
Architectural Foundations I Professor Jared Bertels Fall 2014 Model Making Within Architectural Foundation Studio, the fundamental concepts of design were explored and played with through various design processes and materials. At the conclusion of the foundation studio a facade study was created using all the concepts that we had learned. Within this facade study the principles of repetitions, movements and rhythm are within these pieces. The modulars are all created using the same fold and process to create each piece that ultimately creates the facade. The light plays with the cascading form to create an element of surprise within the study. The structure of the facade is designed in a way to let the model be highlighted focal point while the letting the structure blend in with the background.
CASCADING MODULE The module for the facade study was created from one single piece of paper and five cuts. Through the process of folding each one around to the next, the module was created and then strung through the frame to create the facade.
3 ECO MACHINE
University of Kansas Campus
Architectural Design I Professor Steve Padget Fall 2015 Revit, Sketch Up, Photoshop Inspired by the Eco-Machine’s process and the sites natural slope, the design came about with 4 modules that all cascade down the hill slightly shifting. The shift of each module was capitalized by the effort to bring natural ventilation from the lower side of the hill and funnel it through the building. This shifting also provided amble natural light into the building. Sustainable design was a major focus of the Eco machine design. It was located on The University of Kansas campus between Budig Hall and Wescoe Hall. Utilizing the hills natural slope to purify water as it started as black water at the top to potable water at the bottom. The landscape of the site was produced to let the water run down the hill and become more purified.
NATURAL FORCES Bringing light into the Eco-Machine was a big priority within the design to make sure that each tanks vegetation had enough light to grow, but the indoor quality of the space was also taken into account. Natural ventilation and specialized window placement were thought about within the design to satisfy all constraints
4 11TH AND MASS: LIVE-WORK Lawrence, Kansas
Architectural Design II Professor Todd Achelpohl Spring 2015 Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, Watercolor Located in the heart of Lawrence, Kansas the building was a mixed-used design focusing on the combination of an Interior Design Showroom, Interior Design Firm and 3 Condos. The design concept focused on high contrast between the street facade and the middle court yard. A street front was maintained to keep the look of Massachusetts street continuing onward. A concept was conceived upon the idea of heavy verses light. This was completed by have a middle large courtyard that brought southern light into the space through an abundance of glazing.
SOLID VS. TRANSPARENT While trying to maintain the Mass. street facade a design move was made to keep a heavy solid facade and open the interior of the building into a courtyard. To capitalize on the western afternoon sun lovers were located on the street facade to maintain a solid front while letting sun into the space.

5 OLATHE PUBLIC LIBRARY Olathe, Kansas
Architectural Design II Professor Todd Achelpohl Spring 2015 University of Kansas Taking inspiration from Olathe’s origin was the concept that is seen through out the library design. Olathe was the crossroads of the Santa Fe and Oregon Trail. The massing of the library was focused on this and inspired the splitting point of the two wings of the building where the trails diverged and expand westward. The slope of the roof out to the west represents the expansion outward and a salute to these two trails and all they did for America. The red terracotta panels were used to blend in with the rest of the existing area while still maintaining a modern front. The height of spaces within the library were played with to give every guest a special area to study or read in during their time within the space.
SPLITTING OF THE TRAILS The designs concept was based off of the trails map through Olathe. This inspired the node of expansion outward that is seen through the facade and its placement to the West,.as well as the buildings footprint.

PLAY IN HEIGHTS To create unique places within all parts of the library, the upper floor was cut back to create a unique two story area that wraps the facade of the building. This create very open two stories places for collaborations as well as more intimate smaller spaces located within.
6 RENDERINGS
Grand Haven, Michigan
Dryer Architectural Group Intern Summer 2016 Sketch Up and Photoshop During my time at Dryer Architectural Group, I created sketch up files of client project and would photoshop the renderings. These renderings and Sketch Up files were shown to clients to help their decisions on paint colors, exterior siding choices and window placements. During this time I also prepared architectural plans, elevations, construction documents and details. Also, I assisted in reviewing of building codes to assure that design complies with the minimum legal and ADA standards, made site visits and constructed as-built plans, to be used to design from.
