2011 Mentorship Reception & Golf Classic Program
CENTRAL ALBERTA ADVISORY COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE In August of 2006, Harold Grace, Director of Development for CNIB, dreamed of opening a CNIB office in Red Deer. June 2007 saw the launch of a capacity building campaign with a goal of successfully raising over $400,000. Harold’s dream came to fruition on March 27, 2008 with the grand opening of the Red Deer office, which to date serves over 1000 clients in Central Alberta, an increase of 45 % over the last three years. The Advisory Committee is proud of the efforts of all the financial donors, CNIB staff and all the volunteers who have collectively improved the lives of those with vision impairment and all their care givers. It remains the vision of the Advisory Committee to assist in the sustaining and growth of our local CNIB chapter. Please enjoy the evening and take a bow for your part in making the difference in so many lives.

GUEST SPEAKERS SPEAKERS GUEST
Mellisa Hollingsworth - HONORARY CHAIR Mellisa grew up as a country girl on a ranch in Eckville AB. Mellisa considered quitting the sport of skeleton when she wasn’t named to the 2002 Canadian Olympic Team. Thankfully, for her, and Canada, she didn’t. Mellisa’s World Cup season leading up to the 2006 Olympic Winter Games redefined the term “hot streak”. After mapping out a new competitive strategy, the 30-year-old kicked off the pivotal season by winning her first World Cup in 10 years of racing, and became the first athlete in the history of the sport to never finish out of the top three for the rest of the year. Mellisa won the Overall World Cup title in 2006, and slid to a historic bronze-medal finish in Torino at the Olympic Winter Games. Gutsy, courageous and determined, Mellisa is proud of her accomplishments, but her competitive goals are not yet achieved. She will be back chasing gold in 2014!
Barry Weatherall - HONORARY CO-CHAIR
Barry grew up in England where at the age of 16 he entered into the trades. After completing his training he traveled, met a Canadian girl, moved to Canada and got married. He found work with a Central Alberta Plumbing company and at the age of 36 he had a workplace accident. Barry sustained three degree burns to his face, neck and arms; as a result of the accident he lost both his eyes. Barry has called Red Deer his home for the past 20 years. He once again enjoys his passion for sports such as White Water Rafting, Rock Climbing, and Swimming, going to the Gym, and taking his dog Owen for walks.
Randi Boulton - HONORARY CO-CHAIR
Randi Boulton is a local singer/songwriter/ musician whose roots run deep in Alberta. Born & raised on a farm just outside of Big Valley, she lived in Red Deer for a century and recently moved to Lacombe. Randi has been in the music industry for over 15 years and is currently recording an album. Randi performs regularly around Central Alberta with weekly gigs in a host of different venues as well as supporting various charitable events close to her heart. She has been compared to the likes of Norah Jones to Janis Joplin, Jann Arden, Melissa Etheridge, Jewel, Sarah McLachlan & many more.
Jim Jerome - MC & AUCTIONEER
Jim Jerome is a co-host for a morning radio show in Ottawa and has been knocking the audience on their ears for over 10 years. He is a close family friend of the Gretzky’s and has been a huge supporter of the Walter Gretzky CNIB Golf Classic in Brantford. Thanks to their recommendation, Jim has also supported the event in Red Deer for the past 3 years. His unique comedy style is like nothing you’ve ever seen, with Jim on the mic, the events fly by with style and laughter. We are happy to have him back this year.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CENTRAL ALBERTA CNIB ADVISORY BOARD CNIB ADVISORY BOARD CNIB passionately provides community-based support, knowledge and a national voice to ensure Canadians who are blind or partially sighted have the confidence, skills and opportunities to fully participate in life. The local office is very active in education and awareness about CNIB services, vision loss prevention and recognizing the symbols of vision loss, such as the white cane. We have presented and displayed information about CNIB at events with local optometrists, seniors’ centres, lodges, schools, and public information events for health care providers, Legions, Lions clubs and the general public. We have also educated health care professionals in the Central Alberta region about how to better care for and assist those who are blind and partially sighted. As a United Way member agency, CNIB participated in a variety of fundraising events and meetings. We assisted with recruitment of volunteer speakers from our client base who discussed their personal experiences with vision loss. The Red Deer office continues to be a resource to eight client support groups in the Red Deer area. In October of 2010 CNIB Red Deer hosted a Technology Fair. Approximately 200 people attended this health fair to learn about new assistive devices available and to hear Dr. Elizabeth Lythgoe present about new research and treatments available for common eye disorders. As our population ages, so do the number of seniors accessing CNIB services with age related eye conditions. There is a notable increase in public awareness of eye diseases, and improved referrals from medical professionals. There is increasing demand for our rehabilitation services, and a growing number of pre-school children are accessing CNIB services. This is due in part to the survival rate of premature babies, who often experience multiple disabilities including blindness or vision loss. We want to take this opportunity to thank the many donors to CNIB, and would ask for your continued financial assistance and support through sharing of your time and talents. Please see the back of this document for a list of members of our local advisory committee. With the help from people like you and the board members, community involvement with CNIB will continue to grow and flourish in Central Alberta.
