WHAT A MONTH! T he William Derby is now finished but what a competition the best I can ever remember, do not miss the extra magazine Derby Special that should be out in around a week.

One amazing competition draws to a conclusion others are about to start; greyhound racing is fast and furious, we have the William Festival at Sunderland, Ladbrokes Summer Festival at Monmore and the Three Steps To Victory at Sheffield – it’s going to be very special! We have included more race reports from some tracks and hopefully in the future more will be added. The politics in the sport are hanging heavy around our necks like a millstone, battle stations have been drawn either side of the fence, I’m worried because I’m on the fence and worried about being caught in the crossfire. All this public fighting in newspapers, forums and the like are no good for anyone let alone the SPORT. 6

The GBGB will not engage in negotiations with the GTA because of the attacks (I honestly can’t blame them) so what do the GTA do come out and attack them publicly once more. It is not for me to tell anyone what to do but surely talks must be done professionally and people must always be treated with respect, what chance have anyone got if those basic principles are not adhered to?

I’ve come to the conclusion the best course of action is to completely forget the politics, ignore it all and lets enjoy the amazing races and greyhounds we have running in this country. Apart from the little bit above you will be thankful this is an escape from politics and you can enjoy the magazine that is packed with reports and previews on the great action.

Do fairy tales come true? It would appear so, William Hill delivered us a sensational Derby with a first-prize of £200,000, who among us even just a couple of years ago would have imagined that we’d see greyhounds chasing such a huge prize, it was a mere dream but thanks to William Hill that dream came true. In 1927 Entry Badge entered the history books forever winning the first Derby which was worth £1,000 (that is roughly £55,000 today). Would any of those people there that day have dared to dream that less than one hundred years on greyhounds would chase £200,000, the race would be beamed out all over the world on Sky Sports and there would be a frenzy on social media? 8

I think if you’d have suggested that would happen you would have been treated like you had escaped from some institution. Not only did it happen I feel this is only the start, greyhound racing is a sport that’s hit peaks and troughs over the years but you get the feeling it is on an upward curve especially at the top end of the sport!

Punters Dodged Salad And Paid The Price I feel like Hans Christian Anderson sitting here penning the wonderful story of Salad Dodger, if I had not seen it happen with my own eyes I’d not believe it happened. Bruno Berwick a bricklayer with just four greyhounds in training took on the might of the

greyhound world and won in true David and Goliath style. Perhaps he purchased some big race winner from Ireland for £20,000? No himself and Ron Mills purchased Salad Dodger, (Crash - Airforce Stacey, June 2012) for £2,000 in January after he was beaten in an A3 contest around Romford. He had failed to win any of the rounds in the Derby but that old saying it’s all about qualification is so true and while greyhounds with huge CV’s and reputations bit the dust Bruno kept his lad in the greatest competition in the sport. In the final the sponsors where quoting 6/4 for it to be an Irish one-two with Mind The Net and Crokers Champ dominating the betting. The Derby roar lifted the roof on the old lady of Wimbledon stadium and it was Crokers Champ 5/2 who made the corner

WILLIAM HILL DERBY - WIMBLEDON in front but Salad Dodger 16/1 broke well and was in second with Droopys Ward 6/1 in third. There was trouble for Mind The Net 1/1, Farloe Trent 7/1 and Kincraig Rory 20/1 that would see their Derby dreams dashed. Crokers Champ out in front looked vulnerable with the powerful finishers Salad Dodger and Droopys Ward in hot pursuit, I must confess I thought Droopys Ward looked the most likely winner heading around the thirdbend but Salad Dodger would not be denied, he powered down the home straight to win by 0.5L over Droopys Ward in 28.38 +20. It was a one-two for England and even more special Salad Dodger is British Bred.

He lowered Razldazl Jayfkay’s clock by two spots to set new figures of 28.06 +30. He had those owning

Puppy Derby champion again trained by Owen Mckenna gets the vote for best performance in round-two, it was close with his kennel companion Fiery Splendour but he shined brightest of all with a power packed performance to win in 28.42. He would also later crash out but at this stage if you had backed either of Owen’s runners you were getting very excited.

26th April BERNINA IS TOO TOUGH FOR RAMBO Romantic Rambo arrived at Crayford in a rich vein of form having won his last four starts, he was duly sent off a warm 2/5 favourite for the 714m contest but his fans where left disappointed when a Bodell Bernina (College Causeway - Midway Tomscout, April 2010), cracked out and made every yard a winning one to score over Rambo by 0.5L in 45.85 at 8/1. Sportsman Pat (Blackstone Gene - Sportsman Queen, October 2011) put in a very good display recording a 12.80 sectional over the 540m, he was never headed and won by 0.75L in 34.15 at 5/1. Ferryforth Paul (Droopys Scolari - Ferryforth Lark, October 2009), showed excellent battling qualities to ride a couple of bumps and still come out on top in the 380m contest by a head in 23.77 at 6/1.

3rd May MILITARY PRECISION FOR HOLLOWAY STAR Crayford is famed for their variety - they have it all! 20

The hurdle scene is going from strength to strength and they put plenty of open-races on for the jumpers. Soviet Military, (Premier Fantasy - Invincible Diva, March 2010) put in a fine performance tonight to show he is without doubt still one of the best jumpers on the circuit. When he gets it right at trap rise he is formidable, he did exactly that flashing from traps he quickly put the race to bed scoring by 1.75L in 34.28 +30.

10th May JUMBO FAILS TO TAKE OFF Cornamaddy Jumbo was the brilliant winner of the Springbok but he was turned over at 2/5 tonight by the talented Springwood Ali, (Droopys Scolari - Express Sapphire, September 2010), Ali missed his break but showed very good pace and put in an impressive display of jumping to beat Jumbo by 4.5L in 23.92. Droopys San Remo, won the heat and final of the A1 Owner’s Bonus Series, the son of Droopys Kewell

proved you do not have to lead around the Kent venue to come out top dog. In the heats he took it up at the second-bend to score by 0.75L in 23.38 +20 at 3/1. In tonights final worth £500 he showed incredible track craft and determination to hit the front at the fourth-bend, he held on to get the verdict in a four way photo by a head in 23.75 at 2/1. Earlier in the day live on BAGS Crossfield Hannah (Head Bound - Aruba Lark, May 2012), caught my eye in an A6 contest, the youngster got plenty of trouble but showed terrific pace for her grade and will surely win plenty more to add to her victory here by 1L in 23.80.

PERTH IS SWIFT Being involved in owning and training greyhounds is like riding the Big Dipper at Blackpool, one minute your up the next you are down, that feeling was sadly evident with Swift Perth. He demolished two decent A1 contests scoring by a combined 8.75L in brilliant times of 29.54 and 29.65 connections decided to have a crack at the world’s greatest race; The William Hill Derby at Wimbledon worth £200,000 to the winner.

and I for one hope to see him on Sky-Sports and chasing some big prizes in the future, no disrespect to Doncaster but he is too good to be running in A1’s and this lad should be given his chance to wow the crowds nationwide.

It was a repeat performance from his heat with Swift Xavi blazing a trail but just like in the heats Luttons Andy’s power packed finish was simply too much for them to handle, he soared past on the run in to score by an ever increasing 2.75L in 30.61 -60 at 7/2.

He rocked the greyhound world in the capital winning his first-round heat by 2.25L in 28.61 +10. The manner of his victory was what really impressed me (Crd 1, bmp 1/4, Led 4) he showed real guts and determination, you could see what it meant to connections, they literally were bursting with pride, that is what makes our sport magical. It is also a cruel sport, the news broke before the second-round that Swift Perth had to be scratched - this fella is talented

CORAL REGENCY HOVE 24th April BOLT DIGS IN TO LAND REGENCY In front of the Sky-Sports cameras and a large crowd local handler Wayne Wrighting had a night that will live long in the memory when he sent out Boltatwelldigger to land the 2014 Coral Regency worth £10,000 to the winner. 22

Supporting Card PUPPY CHAMP BREAKS FREE Cluxtons Free (Ballymac Maeve - Park Halo, April 2011), won the prestigious Ladbrokes Puppy Derby at Monmore back in 2013, there’s been plenty of problems since that triumphant day but he thrilled the Hove patrons tonight, he demonstrated exactly why he is a champion, Free blasted from the traps to run out an easy winner by 4.5L in a brilliant time of 16.09 at 1/1, what a credit he is to connections and you write him off at your peril. The night got even better for team Allsopp who sent out Old Refrain (Ace Hi Rumble - Flying Winner, April 2011), to an eyecatching victory over 930m by 9.25L in 57.47 at 4/5, it is a fairly safe prediction; we have another marathon star on the scene.

1st May HOLY MOSES ED IS BACK Droopys Ed Moses (Ace Hi Rumble - Droopys Lotto, September 2010), is a greyhound of unquestionable ability, he did nothing but enhance his reputation even further with a polished powerful performance to win by 6.25L in 41.29 at 2/1. Lode Esteem (Black Shaw Graines Girl, May 2010), is an absolute win machine, incredibly he secured his twelfth win over the 475m distance with another explosive run, showing electric early-pace Wayne Wrighting’s greyhound never looked in danger, he scored by 5.5L in 27.82 at 2/5. Connections are undoubtedly cursing their luck that there is no major race over this course and distance - he’d take some beating if there was.

Millwards Joker (Westmead Hawk - Droopys Solange, August 2012), looks to a be a future six-bend star, he went marginally quicker than Droopys Jarrow, he also suffered crowding but got up in the run in to win going away by 1.25L in 29.95 -10 at 4/5. The Seamus Cahill and Dean Childs pups will go head to head in next week’s decider, it promises to be special.

15th May JARROW STOLE THE MARCH ON TEDDY Droopys Jarrow and Millwards Joker served up a cracker live on RPGTV in the Steve Joel Puppy Trophy Final worth £1,000 to the winner. Jarrow was sent off the 5/4 jolly and his supporters where 23

The race looked over but Millwards Joker 2/1 had other ideas and put in an eye-catching late run. They flashed over the line together but Droopys Jarrow got the verdict by a short-head in a very good 29.72. This was Droopys Jarrow second puppy competition win over course and distance after he burst on the scene in December taking the Coral Sussex Puppy Cup. He looks set to have an exciting career in all aged and the other finalists especially Millwards Joker look like youngsters to keep on your side moving forward.

26th April BRETT SHEDS MAIDEN TAG IN STYLE Primo Brett (Eden Brett Rathmeehan Angel, June 2011), ensured the trip to Monmore was well worth it for Ben McBride, he showed quality early-pace clocking a 4.25 sectional, he led at the corner, was crowded at 1/4 but he had superior pace down the back, there was no sign of him stopping at the line, he had 4.75L in hand in a very good 28.67 -20 at 9/4. 24

It was nearly an impressive double for team McBride but Chris Allsopp trained Chevy Blazer (Crash - Lemon Rita, July 2011), held off Coologue Smokey by an ever decreasing Neck in the 630 Maiden in 38.56 -20 at 6/4. One of the stars on show Bush Standard (Droopys Vieri - Lady Bluebell, July 2010), put in an impressive display for Pat Rosney to win in the 416m event, he suffered crowding at the corner but he is a greyhound with a real desire to win, he came back at them hitting the front around the

forth-bend to win by 2L in 24.89 -10 at 4/5. There was also a nice win on the card for Mays Goodluck (College Causeway - Proud Pegs Gift, January 2012) in the other 630m Maiden, she led from start to finish to win by 1.5L in 38.84 -30 at 4/1.

3rd May HOFFMAN IS VERY SWIFT The greyhound world witnessed a remarkable debut from Swift Hoffman (Makeshift - Swift Erin, September 2012).

Pat Rosney’s youngster quite literally blew away the field in this puppy open, showing early-pace but devastating back straight pace that saw him pull right away from his opposition to score by 7L in a sensational 28.08 at 4/5. John Sharp sent out a nice double with Whiterock (Crash - Gotoon Trendy, April 2010) winning in the 264m event by a short-head in 15.56 -5 at 7/2 and Ballyhill Lexi (Crash - Baby Hazel, December 2010) in the 416m race scoring by 2L in 24.63 at 7/4.

8th May DADUM HITS HIGH FIVE Dadum Dadum (Ja Mann Lisnahavil Lady, March 2011), pulled of a wonderful feat tonight winning his fifth A1 on the

bounce, the son of Ja Mann is an absolute win machine, he is a credit to connections and never seems to run a bad race. He won tonight by a neck in 28.52 at 5/2. Bittles Bar (Droopys Scolari Dooey Shaw, October 2010), Martin Whites lightly raced star made up for a disappointing exit from the Derby by storming to victory here by 2.75L in 28.17 at 4/6. He looked far happier now he has the wide seed removed and will be a player in all the major competitions again this year. There is no doubt Whiterock (Crash - Gotoon Trendy, April 2010), loves it at Monmore he won again tonight in impressive fashion, stepped up to 480m after his sprint victory he trapped very well and turned on the gas to win

by a whopping 5L in 28.31 at 1/1. Kim Billingham’s Andlyns Asabat (Ballymac Ruso - Quarterland Hope, September 2010) is a real speedster, the new sprinting distance of 210m was made for him, he won in very impressive fashion by 2.75L breaking his own track-record in 12.45 at 1/2.

15th May CURTIN’S FANTASY IS STILL GOING A fantastic training performance from Pat Curtin saw him send out the veteran Longwood Fantasy (Premier Fantasy - Final Patsy, July 2009) to victory in the 480m open, Scottish Derby finalist from 2013 Greenwell Mentor and this year’s semi-finalist was all the rage for new connections at 5/4 25

He was fantastic in the heat of the Derby and is very well, he is top class and this trip and track should suit.” I think the likely winner will hail from the Wallis camp but there is sure to be a top-class entry Scala Dromin who beat Blonde Razor in the Prestige will be a likely runner. Fear Emoski could be over her fitness worries when she cruelly had to be withdrawn from the final of the Regency.

Sidelight (Hondo Black - Borna Fence, March 2011) is a dream greyhound, it does not matter four or six-bends she always runs her race and is formidable on the open-race scene. Chris Allsopps lady did the business once more in the 480m contest to get up by a neck in 28.62 at 5/1.

The youngster posted a smart run showing plenty of early and all round pace to take the puppy open over 480m by 3L in 28.77 +20 (hand-timed) at 5/1. 25th April BOB’S GOT STAR QUALITY Adageo Bob (Hondo Black Blonde Pearl, July 2011), is a greyhound capable of producing very special performances, one was delivered in some style here tonight, coming away in fine fashion this contest was over in a matter of strides, he quite literally pulled away from a decent field in the manner of a real champion, the winning distance of 12.5L was in no way flattering, he recorded a fantastic time of 34.72 +30 at 8/11. Dower Matt (Mountleader Matt Spent Savings, July 2011), is back to his impressive best, he scored readily 1.25L in 23.94 +10 at 11/8. A couple of youngsters caught the eye on the card including the most impressive Mikes Machine (Slip The Lark - Maverick Queen, July 2012), Ernie Gaskin’s youngster made every yard a winning one to win by 2.75L in 24.20 +10 at 11/4. There is no doubt that there are some big competitions coming up and Reel Trickyone will be a force to be reckoned with in which ever competition he is entered up for. Every month I will be looking at some of these stats and highlighting some that catch my eye, hopefully you will enjoy them! Every effort has been made to ensure these are correct but we can’t be held responsible for any mistakes. Incredibly there is no letting up from the Champion Mark Wallis, he’s unearthed a new four-bend star in Aero Nemesis and there are also some exciting youngsters on the horizon, this spells danger for everyone else. Charlie Lister OBE normally makes a huge move at this time of the year but he is having a terrible run of bad luck and is not currently in the top-six. Carol Weatherall’s made a huge move with Holdem Spy winning the Scottish Derby what an achievement it would be if she can stay there. Liz McNair took the Arc at Swindon with King Dec and you would say they have a lot of strength in depth – at the time of writing they have two in the semi-finals of the Derby and more big points could be around the corner. The battle for the top-six will go all the way to the line – I am sure the bookies are missing a trick by not offering prices on it and some match betting between trainers etc. The race is over Mark Wallis will be crowned the champion so come on get thinking out of the box and give punters something to get stuck in!

In last months edition, I wrote an article about Westmead Hawk, and the fact that we had probably had one of the last matings to him. Well, on the 5th of May they arrived… 9 beauties, 5 dogs and 4 bitches with an assortment of colours for a change. They are lovely big pups and mum(Hesley Hawaii) is as usual being brilliant, plenty of milk and the pups are thriving and loads of fun. As you can see they are filling the whelping box and are ready to move to somewhere bigger. Perhaps then the house will start to get back to normal. ** STOP PRESS ** Westmead Hawk gets 2 through to English Derby final.

For anyone interested in colour inheritance, we now know that ‘Lulu’ (H.Hawaii) has a fawn gene(probably from Hondo Black) as she has produced brindle pups. It means that the brindle girls are genetically Brindle/ Fawn so we may get a bit more variety with colours if they are good enough to become broods themselves. It is also ‘unlikely’ that she carries a parti-colour(white and) gene as Westmead Hawk carries parti-colour yet we have not got one despite having 9 pups.

A deserved victory for Boltatwelldigger after being sidelined from March to August 2013 with a broken metatarsal, it took his race record to 15 wins from 56 starts. He raced 3 times in Ireland winning all 3 in A1 grade at Longford with a best time of 28.95. Some of his best times include 41.47(calc) for 695m Hove, and 45.60(calc) for 714m at Crayford. Hondo Black has been a regular feature with the american sire having a sensational twilight of his stud career with yet another 32

competition win added to his cv. Dam Coras Fancy won 8 of her 21 races, recording bests of 28.86 at Longford, 29.18 at Newbridge, and 29.61 at Shelbourne Park. Top Savings won 29 of his 51 starts, starting favourite(mainly odds on) in almost every race he ran in. He won the 2001 Group 1 puppy classic at Nottingham, the 2001 Silver Collar at Sheffield, and the 2002 Juvenile at Wimbledon. He was a finalist in the 2003 English Derby where he started as 4-7 fav but could only finish

4th(promoted to 3rd after D.Hewitt was disqualified) having started odds on in every round. He twice set a track record at Nottingham, first 29.67 before later lowering it to 29.43. He also recorded 29.12(Sheffield), 29.69(Hove), 28.40(Wimb), and 28.17calc(Monmore). Glencora won 10 of her 38 starts. She won the Munster Oaks at Waterford recording 28.48 in the final. She also recorded 28.54 at Harolds Cross.

o yet another Greyhound Derby has been run and one lucky dog and connections have hit the jackpot. I have always been a fan of the event and lets face it there is simply nothing quite like it. Whilst my love of greyhound racing goes back to a very young age for me my personal highlight will always be the night that I found myself at White City walking a couple of dogs for the legendary Paddy Milligan both of which won, he was a great trainer after all. 34

As I walked the second one back to the kennel area the six finalists for the 1976 Derby Final were there ready to parade against the backdrop of that famous trumpet fanfare. You could have cut the tension with a knife. You will have to take my word for it but I looked into the eyes of Mutts Silver and thought to myself you are going to win the Derby, and so he did.

That memory and that electric atmosphere were both unforgettable but that night was also almost like an unreal world captured for just the duration of the nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meeting and certainly at least a million miles away from an everyday race meetings. And so it remains with the vast majority of owners having to make do with their bread and butter graders that enable greyhound racing to function on a day to day basis and whilst they may never have a Derby runner, yet alone a winner, let us never forget or indeed under estimate the importance of those

Ian Bland There are plenty of local stars in graded races at every track that are unsung heroes. I would like to think that our top Open race trainers, with graded contracts, would endorse my view that all of the dogs in their charge, whether they be Derby entrants or bottom graders, give equal enjoyment to their owners and the racing public alike and are of equal importance in our sport. Contentious part of this article over I would now like to concentrate now on a couple of our unsung heroes at Crayford who are members of our “one hundred race” club. Incidentally at Crayford we give all dogs that have achieved this landmark a special trophy award so come on the powers that be is it not time for the sports governing body to do such awards, rather than local tracks, in recognition of these greyhound’s outstanding contributions? thousands of hounds that are such an integral part of our sport. So here is a question for you. Which would you rather have a Derby winner or a grader that has run over one hundred races for you? Are you in it for the money or for the sport? Answers on a post card please! Probably a very unfair question as owners across the board share a very diverse spread of opinions and views. I guess the point that I am trying to make is that the bottom line for all is that whoever you are we all want to see our dogs run for as long as they are able too and whilst the superstars of the sport grab those short lived headlines.

Gemara has had 159 career races having made his debut here in October 2010 and unbelievably is currently running in top grade A1. The June 2009 son of Droopys Robinho is trained by Steve Gammon has won 31 of his races and been in the frame on 32 other occasions. You would have to go back to September 2011 for the last time he appeared in an A1 race so he is clearly not ready to retire just now. His latest win came on 10 May when romping in to win an A2 race at odds of 8-1 so whilst a top grade win may be a step too far wait for the dog to drop back to A2 level and you could get a very decent win price on a very decent

grader. Incidentally the dog has finished in the first three in no fewer than eighteen of his last twenty four races so he is a must for trio backers. On 133 career races you will find Bornthisway who has had all of her races here at Crayford under the care of trainer Patsy Cusack and the dog has always raced in the A4-A8 range but like Gemara she shows no sign of throwing in the towel in the foreseeable future. She finds herself currently in grade A8 and is overdue another win which would be number twenty two on her card and she is still capable of winning now and again when running from her favoured trap one. Two runner up spots in her last four runs suggests the win is not far away. There are plenty of similar greyhounds here with a hundred plus races and I am, as you can tell, quite passionate about such graders getting their due recognition as the effort taken to achieve this level of performance warrants reward. I for one love the Derby and the sports top stars but I remain bemused at Crayford’s all time race record holder Newlawn Sweep missing out at this years GBGB annual awards night having retired from racing here at the age of eight having run 267 competitive races. He ran in all weathers month in month out between February 2007 and September 2013 and whilst I am all for the best being recognised surely it is time that the lesser stars also received some attention on a wider platform when warranted. 35

hen the greyhound stadium at Raikes Lane, Bolton shut its doors for the final time in 1996, it ended a 69 year period when greyhound racing had taken place at the track. 36

Conally Lass took the opening race on that cold December 10th night in 1927. Those in attendance on this night probably didn’t realise that Bolton would go on to become one of the finest greyhound stadiums in the country. Owners and trainers knew that if they were to enter for a race at Bolton, they would need a good dog on their hands to go away with first prize. Mark Whittaker who now heads

As with all of our lost tracks Bolton is sadly missed by all of its regular patrons, but they have some terrific memories. Sadly a car sales lot now stands where the superstars of the independent scene once raced.

And we were dealt another body blow when Pieman came off lame after her first run, it’s a recurrence of her toe injury and after taking Seamus’s and vetinary advice it was a tough decision but we retired her for the welfare of her.

She is just out of season and did a calculated 16.70 on the 19th May which for a 515m bitch is a fair run. So here’s hoping she is racing soon and adds to our good winning percentage.

ROLLERCOASTER OF GREYHOUND OWNERSHIP Well it’s been a month to forget really for the syndicates, not much good news to report. Floss came back to the track following her enforced lay off and first run back jarred her shoulder, so will be off for two to three weeks. Wilburn has failed to add to her debut win and isn’t getting the clearest of runs, but she is only a baby and hopefully her track craft will improve. The Widow is running well in defeat and has qualified for the semi-final of the big handicap at Newcastle, hopefully she will qualify for the final and as usual run her gutsy race, here’s hoping. 38

Eaves, Griff, McGlynn and Swell are all now over the cough they had and are progressing very well at Dunham Greyhound Centre. They are due to start their schooling very shortly and shares are still available in these very well bred pups who will be hitting the tracks in about two months’ time. I BOUGHT A PIECE OF HISTORY On another note I purchased all the trophies, winner’s jackets, photos and everything else from Geoff De Mulder’s collection, there are some great things there and I am in the process of recording all the items. It really is a treasure chest of greyhound memorabilia, I’m sure a collection like this will never come to the market again. I hope to in the future conduct an online auction so everybody will be able to have a piece of greyhound history. Included in it is the winning jacket from Jimsuns 1974 derby win along with the original photo finishes from the 1958 Pigalle Wonder derby, and the 1959 Milebush Pride derby. You can’t buy this stuff its priceless for all greyhound enthusiasts.

From www.salacresracingteam.com Anna Delivers Us A Nice Bonus! Things haven’t been going too badly over the past few weeks for us at Salacres Kennels. Whilst most eyes have been focused upon the derby down at Wimbledon we’ve been quietly working away and have enjoyed a decent amount of winners. Salacres Anna (pictured right) won the Owners Bonus Series Final on the 9th May, it might not have been a derby final but these small competitions mean a lot to owners and trainers up and down the country. Anna is a decent bitch when getting on the bunny early and once doing exactly that she was never going to be beaten.

ZERO TEN IS UNDERRATTED Earlier on that same card Salacres Michael was running just his second race for us and scored in good style after taking a first bend lead. Michael is named after the father of a friend of the kennel in Northern Ireland and I hope that this win is the first of many. Michael is one of quite a few dogs we’ve now got in the kennel sired by Zero Ten. He might not be a stud dog that is known to many, but Zero Ten is producing more than a fair amount of winners from only limited matings and I’m convinced that if given more dams he will be making a very big name for himself. Zero Ten stands with the very sporting Comerford family over in Ireland. After the victory of Salacres Michael we didn’t have to wait long for our next Zero Ten winners. The very next night we were represented at Nottingham by four Zero Ten offspring. Brothers Salacres Jimmy (A3) , Ray (A4) and Borzoi (A3) all scored impressively and

their sister Salacres Louise wasn’t to be upstaged as she won in A1 grade for the second time in a week. It was a great night for the Zero Ten x Incredible Lulu family. All four look like they will be worth following over the coming weeks and months. We had another two winners on this night, old stager Cherry Bomb, a veteran of 5 1/2 years showed that there is still life in the old dog yet as he took his A5 race in good style and our homebred bitch Salacres Adele (Premier Fantasy x Queen Of Rangers) was winning for the sixth time in just 17 races. Not a bad nights work at all.

THE RANGERS ARE COMING Talking about Queen Of Rangers her second litter are now settling into kennel life and will be hitting the track over the coming months. Peter is giving them plenty of time to settle and mature and I’m sure this will pay dividends when they do hit the track. Our younger litter of pups sired by Shaneboy Lee and out of Salacres

Polizzi are all progressing nicely too. It’s exciting times at the kennel, with plenty of nice pups already on the track and hopefully a few more still to come. The one thing with pups is you literally don’t know what you’ve got. They literally could be anything and keep you dreaming throughout the rearing process.

NIKE’S GOT THE SWOOSH FACTOR A dog to keep on the right side of that has been performing well at Nottingham lately in opens would be the Charlie Lister trained Final Nike. This dog looked like being a superstar when trialling in but he struggled for form after initially winning on debut back in November 2013. Recently though he’s won 3 races at Nottingham, showing good early pace and if he can translate this form to other tracks he should pay to follow wherever he shows up.

PALACE GATES RE-OPEN After a long ten weeks Easington Greyhound Stadium is finally open again after undergoing a complete makeover which has turned out to be a bigger and more expensive job than new lease holder Steven Bailey ever imagined. I’ve seen firsthand how much time and money is being pumped into the project but although things slowly fell into place, Steve got there eventually with the help of a few of us locals. 100 ton of sand has been laid, the whole hare rail has been re-welded, the stadium outside and inside painted and 2 new sets of level break traps have been purchased with level break racing expected to be thought of as the way forward. The first trial session was a great success, 35 dogs turned up for a trial in total with 18 grading on to the racing strength which is something that hasn’t happened for years and is a great indication that people will return to Easington now it’s under new management. A new prize money structure is in place which sets Easington as the best prize money available in the country for any flapping track, £50 for winning a 4 bend race and £60 for winning over 6 bends is thought to create a better betting market as well as attracting travelers from all over the UK. With two bookmakers in attendance and a third willing to stand for open race events the future is very bright for Easington Greyhound Stadium.

WHEATLEY HILL The Hill has recently announced 40

that they will once again be hosting one of the most lucrative competitions known to Independent racing. Last year £20000 was put up by sponsor Kevin Heilbron and this year it’s happening again. The winner of this year’s Norman Fannon Memorial Derby will pick up an incredible £10000 and dates of when the competition will start are to be announced soon. Over the last 6 weeks the Hill have been staging a host of “mini sweeps” over 260m for the graded dogs at the track,18 entry’s so 3 runs with the final winner receiving £150 and the runner up £50. The first sweep has been won by one of our girls Seaview Maggie. Maggie is an April 11 black bitch which was purchased from the Manilla Kennels in Ireland which are ran by Ms Deirdre Walsh. Maggie came to me after she for some unknown reason started turning in the traps as her races were about to start. After a few solo trials we soon had Maggies eye back on

the ball and are now reaping the benefits with her winning her last 3 races including the sweep final and clocking the fastest run of the night in the process. The second sweep has seen a rapid improvement from a dog I gave away to a good friend of mine Karl Scott of Easington Lane, Keltic Sunrise better known as “Trevor” by the flapping lads had never seen a greyhound track in his life before coming to me from Ireland. He is a May 12 coursing bred brindle dog and since going to Keltic Karl’s kennels Trev has found over 50 spots in time from his previous best at The Hill and has won 2 from his last 3 races. He’s currently the most improved greyhound at the track and one to follow in 2014. The third sweep which was contested over the 440m distance was won by the fast starting RVP.
