JULY 2017

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

CEO’s Update As we enter the new financial year, it is timely to reflect on the transformation of Greyhound Racing Victoria. GRV has worked hard to transform itself to become fit-for-purpose as both a regulator and promoter of the sport. Clear strategic priorities have been formulated to help build a thriving and sustainable future.

race clubs. This is the first time such a plan has been drawn up and it is being led by the clubs themselves, with club managers Greg Miller of Sandown and Adrian Scott of Warragul steering the ship. The plan will significantly expand the role of clubs in better co-ordinating and strengthening regional and statewide marketing campaigns.

The Victorian State Government has been unequivocal in its support for our industry and has also supported GRV’s commitment to making greyhound welfare central to everything we do. As part of the Government’s commitment to animal welfare, the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources’ draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds was released on June 14 for public comment. A range of GOTBA-run and club sponsored workshops have and are being held to assist participants to prepare their responses. Clubs will also be holding Code Help days at all 13 clubs between mid-July and mid-August to provide assistance to anyone needing help – including oneon-one support - with the submission process. The submissions period will conclude on August 14 and I strongly encourage all participants to read the draft code and have your say at agriculture.vic.gov.au/pets/dogs/greyhounds/code-ofpractice.

GRV has completed a review of stakemoney which has been developed following discussions at GRV’s Stakeholder Engagement Workshops. GRV will be seeking to increase overall stakemoney to ensure a wider spread of returns to participants. The Board has now endorsed the package for consultancy purposes. We intend to consult with the industry during July on the proposed package before finalising the details and date for implementation.

While this draft Code has been developed by DEDJTR, we will be responsible for implementing the final version of the Code. So your submissions, highlighting what works in the draft Code and what does not, will be very important in finalising a Code that we can all work on together to put into practice. In collaboration with Victorian greyhound racing clubs, GRV is now rolling out track safety, racing operations and industry development infrastructure. One such initiative is the state-wide implementation of the hoop arm, which is already seeing very pleasing results in injury reduction. Greyhound Monthly will provide a detailed breakdown of these figures in an upcoming edition. New facilities to assist with the education and training of greyhounds at a number of our racetracks is a key part of a strategic plan currently being developed for GRV’s 13

Financially, GRV remains in a strong position to deliver these and other initiatives as revenue from Tabcorp and corporate bookmakers in 2016/17 was above our expectations for the year. Turning now to GRV’s animal welfare and integrity capabilities, which have been the overarching priorities over the past two years and I’m pleased to report that they too are now fit for purpose and delivering the kind of oversight and support that is expected by the community, and which will help secure a strong future for the sport. GRV does continue to find a very small number of participants engaging in unacceptable practices, but the vast majority of participants are committed and passionate people dedicated to greyhound racing and the dog. Looking ahead to the action on the track, we will see some of the best sprinters in Victoria and abroad running in both the Group 2 Bendigo Cup on 7 July, and then the Shepparton Cup, which will now be held on 29 July, the same night as the $145,000 Hudson Pacific Maturity Classic at The Meadows. So we can look forward to some great racing this month.

“Feedback from participants is vital to help shape the final version. I have already spoken to the Government and I’m confident that any legitimate concerns will be addressed” – GRV CEO Alan Clayton on the draft Code of Practice

News Now that the long-awaited draft Code of Practice has been released for public consultation, it is important that participants provide the required feedback through the proper channels. The draft Code of Practice has been released for public comment and it is important all participants read and understand what requirements are proposed. This is your last chance to have a say in what you think is OK and what will not work and why. The draft Code and details on how to make a submission can be found at vic.gov.au/pets Once this code is finalised and gazzetted, we must comply. GRV have assured us they will work with participants to make it easier to meet requirements. The Victorian Government's 'Statewide Planning Scheme' is now being finalised and we should have an answer on that shortly. Once implemented this will be a great outcome for all people who wish to keep greyhounds on their properties. Providing you comply with the Code of Practice you will have a right of use without having to apply for a permit. This will be for restricted numbers but in most cases it will be more than what is currently allowed. As breeding numbers need to increase so that we can fulfil our future racing commitments, we have asked that GRV allows DNA testing of brood females to revert to how it used to be, where brood females can be tested after she shows signs of coming into season and still be mated even if DNA results are not available at this point in time. This will ensure we are not missing out on possible future litters.

By Sandra Reed, GOTBA President GRV has recently commissioned a report which tells of the size and scope of the Victorian Greyhound Racing Industry. This has been circulated to politicians, journalists, councillors and the general public so that more people become aware of the value of our sport in terms of the millions of dollars injected into the Victorian economy and the employment opportunities, especially in rural communities. We generate more than $408.6 million dollars in value added contribution to the Victorian economy. Keeping the politicians, journalists and general public on side is our responsibility so read the publication, talk to people about its contents and make sure your politician has a copy. To access a copy, go to grv.org.au/vgri. This is a good chance to promote the good work we do and the value we contribute to the Victorian economy. Although the many changes might have seemed overwhelming at times, it has been worth it to achieve the respect we are getting for working together to make our industry the best it can possibly be, and we should be proud and confident about our future. There will always be ways to improve our sport, we need to continue to work to achieve the best possible outcomes taking into account all aspects of the industry. The GOTBA is always working on your behalf, however we need more people on the committee to help with the many tasks that we are involved in. There is still a lot that needs to be done and the more people that we have to help with ideas and sharing knowledge will ensure the best possible outcomes. We only have a limited amount of spare time to dedicate to the GOTBA as we are also working at our own businesses, so please instead of asking why we don’t do more join us and assist in doing the more that you expect from our association. You can register your interest in joining the GOTBA committee by visiting the website.

The Greyhound Owners,Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for-profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers, who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of members and their greyhounds. December 2017/ January 2018:

(estimate timeline only)

There is a general expectation that minor-moderate facility upgrades will need to be completed within the first 12 months of the final Code commencing

GRV worked with its race clubs and the Greyhound Owners Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) to put in place seven independently run forums across Victoria to better understand participants’ views and help them make submissions. These forums are running between June 26 and July 4.

These events are providing a forum for participants to discuss the draft Code, identify areas of key industry concern, and put forward ideas for change, including alternative drafting. GRV staff are attending these events as observers to listen to participants’ feedback and hear their suggestions on the draft Code, which will also form GRV’s own response to Government. In addition to these sessions, GRV representatives will attend each of the 13 Victorian greyhound racing clubs during mid-July and midAugust to help participants submit their comments on the draft Code.

GRV CEO Alan Clayton said it was important that participants were heard and that their input was crucial to forming the final version of the code.

Final code likely to be released for implementation

December 2018/ January 2019:

The draft Code was released for consultation on June 14 and is open to submissions for up to 60 days ending 14 August, 2017 at 5pm. GRV is aware that some participants have concerns about the workability of elements of the draft Code, and GRV is encouraging them to put their views forward.

As part of his review into Victorian greyhound racing in 2015, Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Charles Milne recommended that the code of practice be revised to set a minimum standard for the care and management of greyhounds throughout their life.

October15 to November 15: DEDJTR to make recommendations to the Minister for Agriculture regarding the final Code content

Greyhound Racing Victoria is hosting a series of forums and support days to help greyhound racing participants to provide feedback on the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR)’s draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds.

The forums are being supported by the GOTBA with greyhound racing clubs in Bendigo, Traralgon, Warrnambool The Meadows, Sandown (GOTBA members only), Cranbourne and Geelong hosting mid-July to mid-August: the sessions. Each club and GOTBA has invited 15-20 participants to GRV representatives identify issues and possible solutions with the draft Code. to attend GRV’s 13 race clubs to help participants submit their comments on the draft Code.

By Ian Haberfield

“Greyhound racing has come a long way in the past two years and the industry is going from strength to strength,”Mr Clayton said.“With overwhelming participant support, the landscape of greyhound racing in this state has significantly changed – with animal welfare as a priority and these changes are ensuring the long-term prosperity of our industry.” “I’m aware that some participants are concerned about elements of the draft but I want to stress that this version is just that – a draft. That’s why feedback from participants is vital to help shape the final version. I have already spoken to the Government and I’m confident that any legitimate concerns will be addressed.” Mr Clayton took the opportunity to acknowledge the support Victorian greyhound racing had been given. “We have received nothing but full support from the Government as we work with them and our participants to continue to reform greyhound racing and ensure it has a strong and sustainable future.”

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news A greyhound is slowly towed while grabbing the hoop lure as part of the gamesmanship and confidence-building technique involved in bullring use. Below: A greyhound exits the boxes and chases the lure in the Sale bullring indicating that, fitness pending, he is ready to be trialled on a racetrack. Pictures by Melanie Martin

BULLRING USE WITH DES DOOLEY By Andrew Copley GRV’s five-year capital works infrastructure plan demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to a long and sustainable future. This includes the construction of new facilities at a number of race clubs to assist with the education and exercising of greyhounds, such as galloping runs, straight training tracks, bullrings, walking machines and viewing kennels. The construction of a brand new $55,000 state-of-the-art bullring at the Sale Greyhound Racing Club is one of the first projects to be completed, and this has now been in operation for two months. However, simply having access to, and using a bullring doesn’t automatically equate to success. In fact, it can be detrimental, and the first step is understanding the purpose of them. Des Dooley, Manager of the Sale GRC and a successful breeder and rearer of greyhounds, said the main purpose of bullrings is to be a stepping stone for pups before they step on to a racetrack. “The bullring is designed for no distractions from grandstands, people etc and is a good transitional step for pups going to different environments,” Dooley said. “The move from the

comfort zone at home to new surroundings at the track is a big step. If we can make the transition easier the bullrings are working.” Dooley, whose long list of winners he has bred and reared includes Australian Cup winner Franklin Deano, said bullrings are about building the confidence of pups and getting them used to the sights and sounds of a lure in motion. He added that he wouldn’t recommend using a bullring as a form of intense exercise. “I personally would not want a greyhound galloping flat out around a nine-metre radius because after about a quarter of a lap the dog would be putting too much strain on its body. After a few seconds they should hopefully be biting on and enjoy being towed. With the hoop arm being introduced we are happy to allow dogs to bite onto the hoop lure in the bullring.”

"A greyhound might only need to use a bullring two or three times during its puppy life, but that can mean the difference between that pup making it to the racetrack or not."

DES’ BULLRING

the gift that RECOMMENDATIONS • Allow pupson to spend keeps giving adequate time in the bullring

without the pressure of only a few minutes per trial. • Whether a dog runs on its own or with another dog is up to the educator, however I believe the use of a second dog is a second resort. • Once a pup being broken-in is confident and doing what you require then the next step is on to a full size track (fitness pending).

Dooley said it was important participants understand that while the bullring is designed to be an enjoyable experience for greyhounds, over-exposure to a bullring can nullify their interest in chasing the lure or, in direct contrast, cause a greyhound to become hyperactive. “The best dogs will always be those that save their energy for races. Too much work in a bullring can cause greyhounds to become ‘over the top’ and therefore difficult to maintain, particularly on race days when you want them to be calm and focused,” Dooley said. “I don’t believe there is an ideal number of times to use a bullring – it depends on the individual pup – but fitness levels pending, once a pup aged 12 months or older is confident in a bullring the next step is on to a full size track. A greyhound might only need to use a bullring two or three times during its puppy life, but that can mean the difference between that pup making it to the racetrack or not."

remarkably their first foray into breeding.

Gippsland breeder, Glenn Pask, doesn’t get emotional very often but he admits to shedding a tear when home-bred stayer Ring The Bell claimed an historic victory in the Group 1 Duke Of Edinburgh Silver Collar in Auckland on Sunday June 11.

“I’ve had a lot of greyhounds before but this is the first litter we bred,” Pask explained proudly. “I bought Absolute Stunna as a pup and reared her and her brother Striking Blaze. She only had 11 starts. She was okay but she was well-bred so we decided to breed a litter with her and the rest is history! I reared the litter myself and put a lot of work into them. They were on the lead since they were three months old and I walked them every day.”

“It was unbelievable,” Pask said after returning triumphantly from New Zealand. “I said to Gerry (O’Keeffe, Ring The Bell’s trainer and Glenn’s father-in-law) that to go over to New Zealand and win one of their biggest races was incredible. It’s hard enough to win a race at home.”

“I reared the litter myself and put a lot of work into them. They were on the lead since they were three months old and I walked them every day.” “Gerry had the Silver Collar in mind for six or seven months but then Ring The Bell got hurt at the start of the year and we thought this isn’t going to happen. But just before he went over to New Zealand he trialled about half a length outside his Warragul record and we knew he was right.”

8

Ring The Bell’s runaway Trans-Tasman triumph continued the fairy tale success the Four Frothys Syndicate, which includes Glenn, his brother Grant and close friend Jamie Baxter, have enjoyed with the sensational Kinloch Brae – Absolute Stunna litter, which is

The Silver Collar was Ring The Bell’s second Group 1 success, having won the 2016 National Distance Championship, while the other stars of the litter are powerhouse sprinter Blazin’ Bomber and last year’s surprise Sandown Cup heroine Bells Are Ringin. “It’s been an unbelievable ride,” Pask said. “You’ve got to pinch yourself every now and again. The litter would’ve won close to $900,000 now and we’ve travelled around Australia with them, we’ve been to Sydney, Adelaide and Perth, and now to New Zealand. We’ve had a lot of fun, met a lot of people and had a bit of success! “Blazin’ Bomber has been in a lot of Group 1 finals but he hasn’t had much luck with box draws. He did win the (Group 3) Speed Star at Sandown in 29.09. He’s just coming back from injury and isn’t too far away. We’re going to stand him at stud because we’ve had a fair bit of interest.” “It’s funny because when Blazin’ Bomber and Ring The Bell were pups they used to fight a lot. They didn’t like each other at all and there were a few trips to the vet, so I’m glad they’re not racing against each other!” Bells Are Ringin, which won the Sandown Cup last year at 40/1, had a litter of four, two boys and two girls, to Banjo Boy about six weeks ago.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA Jake is the first greyhound to join the Dogs for Kids with Disabilities program and his pending success could create a pathway for other former racing greyhounds.

FOLLOW JAKE’S JOURNEY By Suzanne McKenzie Some greyhounds that have retired from the track could get a new lease of life helping kids with disabilities if a trial program currently underway is successful. GRV has formed a partnership with Dogs for Kids with Disabilities (DKD) which trains assistance and companion dogs and places them with families to improve the lives of children and young adults who face a range of challenges (including physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders). DKD is trialling Jake, a two-year old dog who was at the Greyhound Adoption Program centre at Seymour, waiting to be re-homed. Jake is learning new skills to see if he can transition to a new phase as a companion dog, providing companionship and support for children with disabilities. If Jake’s training is successful, it could pave the way for other greyhounds to follow in his footsteps. So far things are looking promising. DKD founder and director, Katie Hunter, and his DKD trainer, Stephanie, say he is responding very well to attempts to get him walking calmly on a lead and interacting with his handler – although there are some challenges that still need to be conquered, like sitting on command and responding to his name. The program aims to provide a dog that is loving, loyal and trained to respond in such a way that it helps to relax anxious children by providing companionship and comfort. TRAINERS EMBRACE THEIR PART IN ENSURING A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD By Andrew Copley Swabbing in Victorian greyhound racing has tripled in the past two years, and the practice is being welcomed by trainers. “Most trainers are very pleasant about it (swabbing). They understand why we are doing it and we don’t come across too many issues at all,” Greyhound Racing Victoria Steward, Scott Gillespie said in a recent video about swabbing on greyhoundcare.grv.org.au. “The general feeling amongst most trainers that you come across is that it is a good thing, and that is has made it a very level playing field.”

- - - -

has raced to initiate the swabbing procedure Retrieving their greyhound from its kennel bay and leading it into an outside yard Assisting with the collection of urine (or collecting it themselves in the presence of a steward) Witnessing the labelling of the samples Signing off on the process provided they are satisfied it was conducted appropriately

The cooperative manner in which swabs are undertaken is a credit to participants given they play a significant role in the process on what is often already a busy day or night for them.

GRV currently conducts around 1300 swabs per month, which Gillespie said is crucial to the integrity of the sport. He said swabbing can occur at private properties - known as out-ofcompetition testing - or at race meetings, either upon arrival at a track, within 20 minutes of a greyhound’s scheduled race (prerace swab), or after a race (post-race swab). “We can target any greyhound at a race meeting. We may choose to swab greyhounds that run extraordinary times (or) we may choose to target greyhounds that have run below market expectations,” Gillespie said. Gillespie said stewards almost exclusively conducted swabs via urine samples, while blood and hair testing are other options. He also explained that trainers have an active role to play in the swabbing process including: - (with regard to post-race swabs) seeking a steward in the kennel area 40 minutes after their greyhound

VERSATILE FANTA ACHIEVES AN AUSTRALIAN FIRST By Mick Floyd Fanta Bale has laid claim to being one of the sport’s greatest ever chasers by registering a breathtaking victory in the $250,000 RSN Sandown Cup at Sandown Park on Thursday 25 May. The big crowd trackside was buzzing as one of the best fields assembled for the great race headed to the boxes, and the race delivered everything greyhound racing fans hoped it would. The win came as a surprise to trainer Robert Britton who believed Fanta Bale would have to find the lead early to win the world’s richest race for stayers. “We keep looking for reasons why she can’t win, but she keeps finding a way to prove us wrong,” said Britton following the win. When Midnight Elsa headed her I thought we were on for place prize money only, but that’s what she does, she’ll put her head out and keep trying. I’ve had a lot of good dogs over a lot of years, but I haven’t had what I’d call an out an out champion. You’ve really got to put her in that league now,” Britton said.

Fanta Bale became the first greyhound to win at group one level over the sprint, middle and long distances having previously won the Australian Cup, Rookie Rebel and Hume Cup at The Meadows. Fanta Bale doesn’t turn three until August making her achievements to date all the more remarkable. “She’s been a wonderful dog right from the start. The first time we trialled her here, straight from the pre-trainer, she ran 29.50 odd. Then two weeks later she won her maiden in 29.36. Those sorts of dogs don’t come along very often. She’s just a perfect dog I guess. We’d like to think she’s still got a career ahead of her, but whatever she does from here is a bonus because she’s done more than we ever expected,” Britton added. NOTE: Fanta Bale added a fifth Group 1 to her CV when taking out the Gold Cup at Albion Park on June 15, making her the fourth highest prize money earning greyhound in Australian history at $797,490.

YOUNG TRAINER SNARES FIRST GROUP WIN by Mick Floyd Ashlee Terry experienced her biggest thrill in greyhound racing when Maja Mahi Mahi brilliantly won the $145,000 Group One Sapphire Crown (515m) at Sandown Park on May 25. “We’ve run second and third in a couple of group races but never won one,” said the 26-year-old from Cranbourne South. “I don’t really know how to describe it to be honest.”

Owned by Middle Tote Syndicate Trained by Ashlee Terry (Cranbourne VIC)

The owners, the Middle Tote Syndicate, brought a large support team to cheer her on in the Group One feature. “We got lucky I guess. Andrew (Paraskevis), who I live with, has been mates with the owners for 10 or 12 years and they gave us a call. They wanted a change of kennel and to bring her to Victoria to see how she’d go. It was nice to have a big group of people cheering her on.”

“It was nice to have a big group of people cheering her on.”

Maja Mahi Mahi was winless in four starts at Sandown Park coming into the keenly contested final. She began well from box 2, holding her position near the rail in a frantic dash to the first turn. She moved off the rail through the turn allowing Group Two Laurels winner Up Hill Jill to rail up beneath her, but she refused to relinquish the lead and off the back straight had established a two length lead. Up Hill Jill came again but Maja Mahi Mahi had all of the answers, holding on to win by half a length in 29.67.

The Sapphire Crown is one of the most distinguished races conducted at Sandown Park. Restricted to female greyhounds only, the honour roll boasts some of the greatest chasers to grace the track including Bogie Leigh, Paua To Burn, Betty’s Angel, Cindeen Shelby and Xylia Allen.

Maja Mahi Mahi arrived from New South Wales in January and is the only greyhound in the kennel Terry trains for other people.

The win was Maja Mahi Mahi’s 12th in 39 starts and the $100,000 first prize took her total prize money to $144,000.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA Black Mumbo wins the $100,000 first prize prompting firsttime group winning breeder trainer Anthony Karabitsakos to hold the Harrison-Dawson trophy aloft. Pictures by Clint Anderson

'THIS IS FOR YOU, DAD' by Jason Adams Black Mumbo provided the Karabitsakos family with their biggest moment in greyhound racing on May 25 when he took out the $145,000 Group One Harrison-Dawson (515m) at Sandown Park. “Best feeling ever. Ever. I can’t explain how I feel,” said Anthony Karabitsakos. Black Mumbo began well as short priced favourite Bewildering stumbled as the lids rose. Black Mumbo was locked in a three way battle down the back straight with Jimmy Newob and Bubble Guppy. As they turned for home Black Mumbo maneuvered under Jimmy Newob and finished the better to win by 1¼ lengths in 29.53sec.

“Once he settled up front I knew he was going to be hard to beat,” he added.

Stagger x My Path Princess

Black Mumbo returned to the race track in April following three months on the sidelines. He battled a tonsil issue that was only discovered after a change of vet. “We’ve had problems with his tonsils. He’d run two good races and then got sick. After a change of vet he found there was a problem. Thank god for Alistair (at Sandown Veterinary Clinic), he’s done an unbelievable job.” Karabitsakos dedicated the win to his late father, Frank, who passed away five years ago: “Dad would be so proud. He got his first greyhound in 1973 and I grew up with dogs around. I helped him with trialling and all the things that go along with having dogs. He taught me so much over the years. Everyone in greyhound racing seemed to know him and he had an impeccable record as a trainer.” Karabitsakos was very thankful of his mum Vicki and brother Luckie for their help and expertise. “Mum’s great and my brother is always there for me. Without my 14 brother, this wouldn’t have happened. He has taught me a lot.”

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA A GRV betting analyst monitoring wagering across various bookmaking platforms in search of unusual betting activity.

NEW BETTING MODEL IMPROVES APPROACH TO SWABBING Greyhound racing betting analysts have developed a new betting model that works hand in glove with stewards to identify racing greyhounds that should be swabbed.

“The main reason it was developed is to assure punters that there is a level playing field when it comes to betting on greyhound racing."

The new model uses indicators that can identify anomalies in a greyhound's performance. These indicators are added up and scored against a pre-designed category, and any greyhound that is put into the high-risk category is swabbed.

While Karen was reluctant to release any details about either the betting analysts or the Quadrant Model, she did say that the stewards, chief veterinarian, intelligence staff and betting analysts worked together very closely to investigate any anomalies.

GRV’s betting analysts use their in-depth knowledge of each greyhound, trainer and owner to predict the greyhound's expected form, and when it does not run true to form (taking the field into account) the greyhound is swabbed.

"Our betting analysts are developing good working relationships with the betting agencies and have excellent access to data that helps them trace suspicious activity. This helps us prioritise high-risk trainers and track their greyhounds.”

This new model, known as 'the quadrant model', was developed by GRV's Business Program Manager Karen Lees, working closely with the Steward's department to develop a holistic swabbing strategy aimed at providing punters with a level playing field.

“We are continually building a profile of greyhounds and it is not unusual to hear betting analysts rattle off the entire progeny and training history of every greyhound in a race when analysing its form.

"The quadrant model is not rocket science, its success relies heavily on our very talented betting analysts who have an encyclopaedic mind when it comes to understanding the form of each greyhound,” Ms Lees said.

We are continually re-honing the Quadrant Model and ensuring that we understand the entire market by working across jurisdictions to share intelligence so that greyhounds who compete interstate are not ignored."

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

ICG WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS By Andrew Copley The Industry Consultative Group welcomed three new members – Deborah Churchill, Sheldon Hamilton and Brian Jones – at its most recent meeting, held on June 8. All three have considerable experience in the industry, including many years training greyhounds. Building industry confidence has been a major ticket item for GRV in recent months, and members of the ICG suggested that some participants weren't willing to invest in breeding because they believe that GRV has financial concerns and that the organisation hasn’t provided a clear vision for the future. GRV Chairman Bernie Carolan and CEO Alan Clayton – who were both in attendance - pointed to GRV’s Annual Report, which indicates a $5.3 million profit for 2015/16, as proof of the organisation’s strong financial position along with its recent investment in the redevelopment of the Horsham GRC and a pending increase in prize money before the end of 2017. Carolan and Clayton also stated that the Size and Scope study into Victorian Greyhound Racing, compiled independently by consultancy group IER and released last month, should give participants absolute confidence that the future of greyhound racing is strong given the industry’s indirect contribution of $408 million to the Victorian economy. Further, they said that two recent suspected cases of live-baiting did not cause public outrage because it showed that the GRV of today, as the sport’s regulator and with a strong integrity and welfare capability, is doing its job. Not for the first time, ICG members raised concerns surrounding the DNA testing of female greyhounds for breeding – including that Greyhounds Australasia (GA) closes for an extended period

The upgraded Horsham track, which is set to reopen for racing in August

over Christmas - and as such they were buoyed by news that GRV was in talks with GA about a potential handover of the administration around Victorian matings. Concerns were raised about potential costs and training requirements surrounding GRV’s proposed new registration framework, which is set to include new categories for whelping, rearing and educating greyhounds. The ICG was assured that any costs to participants would be minimal as this was not a money-making exercise, but is a directive from the Chief Veterinary Report into Victorian greyhound racing, which was ordered by the State Government. Resolutions around new training requirements for people with limited experience in certain registration categories remains a work in progress. ICG members expressed concern that teenagers from greyhound racing families were being lost to thoroughbred racing because children can lead horses at race meetings from age 14, yet they cannot handle a greyhound on-course until they are 15. GRV personnel said they would explore the legalities around this. Members of the ICG expressed concern with the backlog of cases before the Racing Appeals & Disciplinary Board, inconsistencies in the penalties handed down by the RADB and the ability of people to manoeuvre around some penalties. ICG members opposed the zero-tolerance with regard to the use of prohibited substances as they believe that in some instances people were being penalised for honest mistakes. The ICG said it was heartened, however, that an increase in swabbing combined with a greater ability to detect prohibited substances meant it has never been easier to win a race in the city as it is a level playing field.

WHAT IS THE ICG?

16

In 2016, the Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria appointed an Industry Consultative Group (ICG), with members having appropriate experience and diversity across a number of areas. The ICG meets every six weeks to discuss major issues facing the industry, out of which suggestions are forwarded to GRV’s Board for consideration.

The ICG panel comprises of Judith Bornstein (Chair), Dr Barbara Backhoy, Deborah Churchill, Steven Clarke, Tracey Corneille, Peter Craig, Sheldon Hamilton, Brian Jones, Marg Long, Nicole Lund, Daniel Nugent, Sandra Reed and Tom Welsh – noting Deborah, Sheldon and Brian will be attending their first ICG meeting in June.

NEW VIDEO SERIES:

BEST PRACTICE COURSING By Andrew Copley Most trainers would have a reasonable idea about coursing, but how much do those that haven’t tried it really know about this traditional form of racing? Peter Craig, President of the National Coursing Association of Victoria, showcases the intricacies of coursing in a brand new video series designed to encourage more trainers to take part in this beneficial and rewarding concept. Coursing is renowned for educating young greyhounds, building the fitness and

confidence of greyhounds and, in many cases, extending their racing careers. There is still plenty of time to catch on to coursing in 2017, as the season is only just beginning to hot up towards the holy grail, the Waterloo Cup, to be held at Longwood on August 26 & 27. Before then, however, this month sees the running of the Derby and Oaks at Lang Lang on July 15 & 16, with first prizes being $3,765 plus rug and trophy. These two events are open only to greyhounds whelped on or after 1 March 2015.

2017 Victorian Coursing Calendar: See page 33

Video 1: A trip to Lang Lang for trialling 'They trial by themselves the first time and then about an hour and a half later we put them up together.’

Video 2: Common questions ‘Probably the most common question asked by new trainers is what they need to do between courses.'

Video 3: First season coursers and same-sex races ‘With coursing you can race a whole season in puppy grade and, two out, greyhounds get to build up their fitness.’

Video 4: Post-event recovery ‘I like to take my greyhounds for a pretty slow five kilometre walk the day after a coursing event.’

To watch this series go to greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/video-archive

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL COURSING 1) Trial your greyhound on a coursing track prior to a meeting, ideally seeing if your greyhound can handle two courses in the space of two hours. Trial information can be found at ncavictoria.com 2) Ensure your greyhound is warmed up by walking and massaging them before they course, and cooled down afterwards to release lactic acid build up with more walking and washing them down.

3) Provide access to water and electrolytes (and some food if you wish) to replace energy lost in the run, but be mindful not to over-hydrate or overfeed them if they are going to course again that day. 4) Provide a quiet place for your greyhound to recover between runs where they can spend 1.5 hours having complete rest. If it’s a warm day, be sure to park your greyhound trailer under shade and keep your dog cool. If it’s a cool day, try to keep your dog warm. 5) Ask for help if you are ever unsure.

The hoop arm lure is currently being used across all Victorian tracks, but would a rewardbased set-up allowing our greyhounds to catch the lure at the end of races be more practical? Picture by Clint Anderson

REWARD-BASED LURE SYSTEM WORKSHOP By Molly Haines As a result of concerns expressed by some trainers that our greyhounds are not chasing as enthusiastically as they should be, the Greyhound Owners Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) held a workshop at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club on Saturday 17 June to discuss reward-based lure systems. The finish-on-lure and its relative merits has been a polarising discussion topic amongst participants in Victoria and around Australia for some time. The workshop on reward-based lure systems was aimed at creating further discussion and exploring the issues associated with the possibility of implementation of the system in Victoria, with a view to helping ensure a sustainable for the sport. A panel presented on reward-based training and lure systems included President of the Australian Federations of Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association Geoff Collins, professional canine trainer Steve Austin, owner and trainer James Shaw and GRV’s Stuart Laing. Mr Collins began proceedings discussing what he believes to be one of the biggest racing issues facing the sport – greyhounds not chasing, describing it as the ‘Achilles heel of our industry’. “The more dogs that are chasing, and chasing hard, the less greyhounds we will need to breed as a collective group,” Collins explained to the 50-person crowd in attendance. Mr Collins spoke of a cradle to couch approach to breeding, rearing and educating greyhounds. “The concept of a cradle to couch approach is to focus on industry-driven programs that supports pups from four to five months but doesn’t stop there, it needs to be consistent and continue right through and throughout racing,” he said. Special guest Steve Austin has earned himself recognition through the Certification Council for Professional Dog trainers (CCPDT) after more than two decades training canines.

18 Mr Austin believes that after watching greyhounds race that

80 per cent of our greyhounds do not chase and that a reward based lure system would provide a feeling of achievement for the greyhounds after a race. “I watch the different behaviours between the dogs in front as to those following and they are completely different. For me it is a no-brainer to have a reward based lure system, this ensures that the dogs don’t fail and therefore have more desire to succeed. New Zealand owner and now Victorian trainer James Shaw spoke about the success he has had buying Australian dogs who have received a failing to chase or marring infringement and selling them to New Zealand. “I spent many nights at the pub watching Australian dogs almost hoping as much that one would fight as the one we’d back would win because we learnt quickly that it was cheaper to buy an Australian dog that had fought,” Shaw said. “I bought Lonesome Nitro off the Daillys for $2,500 after a marring offense at The Meadows which saw him receive a 28 day stand down. After two best of the night performances behind the finish on lure at Warganui, New Zealand, I was offered $20,000 for him,” he said. “There are countless examples on the success Australian greyhounds have had once racing behind a finish on lure.” GRV’s General Manager, Racing, Wagering and Business Development, Stuart Laing briefly discussed the previous trial of the finish on lure in Victoria and conceded that it may not have been what the participants really wanted it to be at the time. “The overwhelming outcome was that the wider hoop arm resulted in less interference and although we are still in the early stages statistics are starting to show a reduction in racing interference,” Mr Laing said. GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA Night Theory, embraced by an emotional Michele Berry, is now a city winner.

“He sleeps on a bean bag in the lounge room and steals the kids' toys ”

TEARS FLOW AS NON-TRADITIONAL TRAINING METHOD LEADS TO FIRST CITY WIN By Jason Adams Night Theory captured one of the most emotional victories seen at Sandown Park when he led all the way to give Michele Berry her first city winner on June 22. Berry was in tears following the win and gave Night Theory a heartfelt embrace on track. Despite being born in to a greyhound racing family, Berry only took up the collar and lead three years ago and Night Theory is just her second greyhound. The 45-year-old juvenile justice officer is the daughter of Jim Berry, president of the Wangaratta Greyhound Racing Club in the 1970’s who passed away from Hodgkin’s disease when she was just four years old. Her reintroduction to the sport came via a colleague at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre. “I’m pretty emotional. When I was young my dad had greyhounds and mum would always find me out in the kennels. A few years ago I was working with a guy who had greyhounds. He said he had a 15 month old pup who he was trying to move on. I told him I’d love to have the greyhound as a pet, so I got the dog, looked up his bloodlines and thought stuff it, I’m going to give this (racing) a go. So I went and got my trainer’s license. The first time I raced him he ran 3rd – my love for racing took off from there.”

While her non-traditional approach to training has attracted some scepticism, Berry is determined to stick with what works for her and ‘Zed’. “I’m not going to follow the traditional way just because other trainers think that’s the way it should be done,” she said. NEW TRACKING TECHNOLOGY GRV is currently conducting a realtime tracking technology trial at The Meadows to gather data on the performances of individual greyhounds. The trial is not expected to cause disruptions to participants or their greyhounds. The data will be collected through a small tracking chip (46mm in diameter and 16mm high) in each racing rug. Image - sample only

“I held him for the first time at two-days-old. I brought him up on the couch, I brought him up in the lounge room, I brought him up sleeping on my kids’ beds and we treat him very much like a domestic pet. We even educated him in at home – a lot of my kids’ toys were taken!” she laughed.

The technology will provide the following details on each individual greyhound’s performances: • Position on track throughout the race • Speed • Acceleration • Timing at multiple intervals • Location of racing incidents and injuries

“People would be shocked to come to my house and see him asleep on the beanbag. They ask ‘when is he racing next’, I reply ‘oh in two days’.”

The purpose of the trial is to access the feasibility of the technology with a view to deploying it at all Victorian clubs in the future.

Her association with Night Theory, or ‘Zed’ and he is known at home, started the day he was born.

GAP Testing Dates NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well: • Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au • All sessions for July - September 2017 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. • To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: • have a current C5 vaccination; and • not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing. • Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. • Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. Dr Bridie O'Donnell from Channel 10's The Project with her brand new pet Gypsy, who was one of 63 greyhounds rehomed at an Adoption Day at The Meadows on June 25. Picture by Clint Anderson

DOUBLE THE DOGS, DOUBLE THE SMILES by Suzanne McKenzie More than 500 people attended the recent Greyhound Adoption Day, held at The Meadows. It was a double adoption day, with a morning session, an afternoon session and, with 80 greyhounds on show, there were twice the number of dogs looking for their forever home. Sixty-three greyhounds were adopted on the day. There was a familiar face among the crowd at The Meadows – Dr Bridie O’Donnell who is a regular on the news–current affairs program, The Project, which airs on Channel 10. Bridie took home four-year-old Gypsy. Bridie said she and her partner had been looking to get a dog for a long time, one which would be happy to be alone while they were at work.

“I had never spent much time around greyhounds, but I was always very supportive of any organisation that seeks to look after these amazing animals after they’ve retired from racing,” Bridie said. “I really liked the look and personality of Gypsy when I read about her in the GAP website, so when I went to the Adoption Day, I was definitely very keen to meet her and hopefully take her home. She is a shy girl, who had been a little anxious with her foster carers before adoption, but they said she also had a lovely, gentle nature and would really grow into her confidence once she got to know us.” In addition to being a doctor and a regular on TV, Bridie is also a champion road cyclist. “Both my partner and I are former elite athletes, so we were very happy that we could add another athlete to the house!”

THE VET GROUP

DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE – DNA GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia, steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.

GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab. For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Victorian bred greyhound Cosmic Heir has won 20 races, 90 per cent of which have been interstate.

RETURNING HOME FOR THE BENDIGO CUP COSMIC HEIR August 2013 Cosmic Chief x Latina Bred by Lee Tindall

(Balmattum,VIC)

Owned by John Tindall

(Annandale, NSW)

Trained by Patrick Ryan

(Dilston, TAS)

By Gerard Guthrie Lee Tindall is hoping her classy Tasmanian-trained speedster Cosmic Heir can make a triumphant return to her home state when she contests the heats of the Group 2 Triple M Bendigo Cup on Sunday (July 2). Lee, who’s based at Balmattum, near Euroa, bred and races Cosmic Heir, a daughter of Cosmic Chief and Latina, which Lee also bred, with her brother John and mother Sue. Cosmic Heir, which is trained in the Apple Isle by Pat Ryan, has made her presence felt in several visits to the mainland, running a close third to Victorian Aussie Infrared in the Group 2 Maitland Cup in March, and winning heat and final of a Vic Bred grade 5 series at Bendigo last month in preparation for the Cup. “Since I was 15 or 16 I always wanted a greyhound and when I was 18 I started buying dogs off successful breeder Michael Ivers,” Lee explained. “I didn’t have much luck to start with, before I was lucky enough to buy Nova Keroma. Nova Keroma had a litter to Surf Lorian, which included Nova Surf, which won the Warrnambool Cup, and Come Over Nova. “Nova Keroma also had a litter to Bombastic Shiraz that included Latina, the mother of Cosmic Heir. Latina only had about 12 starts because she dropped a back muscle but she could really run and I was very excited about breeding with her.” Lee’s confidence in Latina as a breeding proposition was wellplaced, with her first litter to Cosmic Chief, a Group-winning son of the great Brett Lee, including Cosmic Heir, the winner of 20 24 of her 40 starts, and Group 1 Hobart Thousand finalists Chief

Jetpilot (23 from 56) and Count Baroque. “Chief Jetpilot won the Greyhound of the Year in Tasmania last year and he was also named Most Consistent Greyhound,” Lee said proudly. “Chief Jetpilot and Count Baroque both won their heats of the Hobart Thousand and I think a bit of bad luck in the final cost them the quinella. “Latina’s second litter to Surf Lorian are just about to go to trainers now and she’s also got a nine-month-old litter to Superman, which will be her last litter. I think two to three litters is enough. These days you need to be selective with your breeding and breed with the best girls you’ve got.” Lee has adopted a very successful formula of racing her greyhounds in Tasmania, where they are trained by Ted Medhurst and Pat Ryan, which began with her multiple Group 1 finalist Lillycette, which produced a litter to the mighty Fernando Bale earlier in the year. “Lillycette wasn’t setting the world on fire in Melbourne so Ted (Medhurst) took her on and we had a good lot of success and it started from there,” Lee said. “Ted mentioned that there was another good trainer in Tasmania, Pat Ryan, who might take some dogs as well and now all our best ones go to Ted or Pat. “When Pat brought Cosmic Heir over for the Vic Bred series at Bendigo she won the heat and final in very good time (23.56sec and 23.68sec) and Pat said that all going well he’ll be bringing her back for the Bendigo Cup, which will be very exciting. “We moved down from NSW about four years ago and it’s been a lot of hard work but the winners keep coming, so we must be doing something right and it makes it a bit easier to get up in the morning. “There’s a few people I would like to thank. David Brasch, who does all our breeding match-ups, Michael Bell our vet, Ross Goeby our ear-brander, Grant Fullerton does our breaking-in and Neil Sargison takes our dogs to Tassie. I’d also like to thank Pat Ryan and Ted Medhurst and their families and the callers in Tasmania, Col McNiff and Shane Yates, who make the races so exciting for us to watch.”

JULY 2017

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

GREAT COMMUNITY INITIATIVE UPON US By Andrew Copley Greyhound Racing Victoria’s TAB Great Chase series is set to continue in 2017, giving Victoria’s disability sector the chancer to enjoy greyhound racing.

Pictured above: 2016 TAB Great Chase winner Promises Kept with trainer Joe Borg and members of Macallum Disabilities Service in Ballarat, which received $10,000 for being randomly partnered with the greyhound on the day of the Grand Final.

The Great Chase has been conducted every year since 2003, and in that time has led to more than half a millon dollars in much needed funds being donated to groups that care for the intellectually and physically disabled. Perhaps more importantly, the series has encouraged social inclusion for thousands of people with disabilities, as they have enjoyed free social outings at the races including meals, merchandise and the chance to meet some greyhounds. The people of Victorian greyhound racing should be extremely proud of their involvement in the Great Chase over the years, whether you have supplied greyhounds to race in the series, introduced your greyhounds to the groups or simply exchanged pleasantries with clients and carers at the track. The collective positive feedback and appreciation from groups has been monumental. GRV and its clubs again looks forward to the assistance of participants in making the groups feel welcome during the upcoming 2017 series, thus continuing to build on relationships between our clubs and their local community. Groups attending Great Chase community days at their local race club in 2017 will be allocated greyhounds they can follow for the day for the chance to share in $26,000 ($2,000 per club), while eight groups will share in $24,000 at the carnival-atmospheric Grand Final at The Meadows on October 25, meaning a total of $50,000 will be distributed to Victoria’s disability sector from this year's series.

A DAY TO REMEMBER Altona Green’s Malcolm Davis had a massive day at Longwood on June 18, winning three events including the feature race, the Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship with Last Outlaw. “I love coursing and as soon as the season starts I head straight there - I love the atmosphere,” the breeder/trainer said. “With Last Outlaw being a speed dog I thought he would be a good little coursing dog. He was runner-up at Benalla, then he won at Lang Lang, and now he has won the Sylvester Doyle. I also had luck on the same day winning with Down Mexico Way and Sweet Spud,” said Davis. Davis is setting Last Outlaw for the prized Waterloo Cup in late August.
