AUGUST 2017

In heartening news for our industry, GRV’s Board has approved an increase in prize money, and as such, a draft package of prize money, breeding and starter’s fees changes is now subject to consultation with clubs and participants. This will provide an increase in returns to participants of $3.1million across a full year. More on the proposed structure appears on pages 4 & 5 of this magazine and I encourage all participants to read the proposal and provide us with your feedback via the email address provided by the end of this month. We expect the new prize money arrangement to start in late 2017, allowing us time to take your feedback into account.

Turning to the track now and we look forward to the upgraded Horsham track re-opening for racing this month following a number of trial sessions held at the venue in recent weeks. The Victorian heats and finals of the AGRA Nationals will create plenty of interest as we find out which greyhounds will have the honour of representing Victoria in the Sprint and Distance Grand Finals in Brisbane later this month. I refer to coursing as our 14th club, and its premier event, the Waterloo Cup, will be run at Longwood on August 26-27, with more than $25,000 in stakes to be won across the weekend. I will be there and I invite you to join me in supporting the sport quite literally at its grassroots.

Submissions close at 5pm on 14 August, 2017.

I must thank and acknowledge the important work of the Greyhound Owners, Trainers & Breeders Association (GOTBA), who ran a series of forums at seven of the race clubs throughout late June and early July to discuss and obtain initial feedback on the draft Code from participants and key stakeholders. The supportive role of our clubs should also be recognised during this consultation period, and the information provided by participants – including the Industry Consultative Group – has been invaluable and your knowledge and experience about breeding, rearing and training greyhounds has assisted GRV in preparing its own submission to DEDJTR before the August 14 deadline.

Re-homing greyhounds remains one of GRV’s key priorities and it was really interesting to discover at a recent Code Support Day at Warrnambool that one of our participants, Joy McDowall, had booked 10 greyhounds, many with successful racing careers, in for pre-entry assessments at the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP). All 10 passed their assessments and I suspect that much can be learned from trainers enjoying a good success rate of getting their greyhounds into GAP. We will provide an insight into Joy’s methods in the next edition of Greyhound Monthly. 2016-17 is another record year for GAP adoptions and GRV will be releasing the full adoption figures shortly.

There perhaps has never been a more important time for Victoria’s greyhound racing participants to try to shape their own destiny, and I encourage all participants and our industry’s stakeholders – if you haven’t already – to please read and respond to the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport & Resources’ (DEDJTR) draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds.

FEEDBACK REQUIRED ON PROPOSED PRIZE MONEY & BREEDERS' PAYMENTS

4

G

reyhound Racing Victoria is seeking feedback and comments on a proposed package of prize money and incentives, which is intended to be implemented in late 2017. GRV has completed an extensive review of prize money and breeders' payments based on feedback to come out of its Stakeholder Engagement Workshops held in 2016 and 2017. The proposed prize money restructure represents an annual increase of approximately $3.1Million in returns to participants, directing more money to trainers, breeders' payments and the bottom grades of racing. It must be stressed that this is purely a draft for consultation. GRV is committed to a $3.1 Million prize money increase, and is open to ideas and suggestions on how this is best distributed.

CURRENT SITUATION (2016/17) • $42.5 Million in prize money, Travel & Starters’ Fees was paid in Victoria in the 2016/17 racing year. • Of the 1658 trainers who had a runner in Victoria during 2016/17, $23 Million (54%) of total prize money, Travel and Starters’ Fees went to owners and trainers of greyhounds trained by the top 100 earning trainers (6% of all trainers).

TARGETING LOWEST GRADES OF RACING Under the proposed model, prize money and Starters’ Fees are being increased at the lowest levels of races by $2.93 Million in total, through a redistribution from higher class races. Prize money and Starters’ Fees for Maiden races will increase by a total of $1.35 Million (+35%), while Grade 5, 6, 7 and Restricted Win races will increase by a total of $1.58 Million (+7%). These races represent 80% of all races run in Victoria. Because all greyhounds start their careers in these races, all greyhounds (and therefore trainers) share in the benefits of this approach.

Although prize money for higher level races has been reduced slightly, by the time a greyhound makes its way to the higher classes it will have earned more money under this system than the current model, providing improved returns for owners and trainers at the earlier stages of a greyhound’s career.

PROPOSED TRAINERS STARTERS’ FEES A key change in the proposed prize money model is the introduction of Trainers’ Starters’ Fees to be paid to the trainer for each individual starter at a race meeting; $80 per starter at Level 2 (Provincial) & Level 3 (Tier 3 & Half Stake); and $120 per starter at Level 1 (Full stakes Metro - Sandown Park Thursday & The Meadows Saturday). This replaces the current Travel Fee ($70 per trainer) and Starters’ Fees ($10 per runner) which has been in place for several years. The trainer is paid for greyhounds they produce for racing, which encourages participation at all levels and assists in maintaining the welfare of greyhounds and the pool of available greyhounds for racing. The new Starters’ Fees would be paid directly to the trainer at the race meeting on the day of the race, in the same way as Travel & Starters’ Fees are paid now. These payments are not included in official prize money, and therefore not shared with the owner, but go to the trainer to cover the costs of travel and the care and up-keep of the greyhound(s). The proposal will mean Starters’ Fees will increase to around $9.67 Million (from $6.2 Million), which means that trainers will receive the direct benefit of an additional $3.47 Million pa in Starters’ Fees. Prize money & Starters Fees' will be advertised in the following way for a race as an example: Of $1,830; 1st - $1,320, 2nd - $320, 3rd - $120, 4th - $70 and $80 Trainer’s Starters Fee for all runners.

The 15% bonus payment for distance races is to be retained, as will prize money top-ups for feature races. This results in minimum prize money per race of $1,830 for Level 2 and $955 for Level 3 races. The $80 Starters’ Fee ($640 per race) will mean more total money will be paid out for these meetings. Proposed New Minimum for all races

agriculture.vic.gov.au/pets/dogs/greyhounds/code-of-practice

Prize money is currently allocated within a race meeting based on the types of races conducted from nominations received, with higher graded races allocated proportionally higher levels of prize money. It is proposed that for Level 2 and Level 3 Meetings the minimum prize money should be the same for all races, after increasing Level 3 minimum prize money and adding 4th prize money at these meetings.

“I also agree with section 6.4, which states that greyhounds must not be exercised in any way while attached to a motorised vehicle. I’m glad that’s in there because I’ve seen people do it.”

David Geall with 2016 Laurels winner, Up Hill Jill. Picture by Clint Anderson.

In his submission, Geall outlined a number of areas he felt should be amended, which he based on his many years training greyhounds including the past 12 years on a full-time basis. “Section 6.4 says that racing greyhounds and greyhounds being pre-trained are to be let into an area that’s least 20 sqm per greyhound, twice a day for a minimum of 15 minutes each time. However, from my experience, this can cause greyhounds to bark excessively and stress. Also, in section 6.6.9 it says fences in exercise yards must be made of wire mesh with holes not exceeding 50 x 75 mm, which is obviously to prevent greyhounds biting each other through the fencing. That’s ok for pups, as they are usually in runs side by side, however, with exercise runs for race dogs you generally have a vacant area in between the runs, so it’s not possible for them to grab each other anyway, meaning this would be an unnecessary expense,” he said.

GEALL TAKES BALANCED APPROACH TO CODE

Geall also made suggestion about part of section 6.6.6 which states that sleeping areas in indoor kennel facilities must have solid partitions to a height of 1.5 metres on three sides.

L

ara trainer David Geall has commended the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport & Resources' draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds, mentioning a number of positives and suggestions on how it can be improved. “I’ve submitted a three-page document on the Code and mentioned a number of positive things because some of what’s in the draft is fantastic. For instance, I agree entirely with section 6.3.3, which refers to breeding females, and in particular how you can’t breed more that three litters from a brood matron without recommendation from a vet as well as formal approval from GRV,” said Geall, who currently trains one of Victoria’s top female racing greyhounds in Up Hill Jill.

“Having solid partitions that tall would mean greyhounds can’t see the dogs either side of them, so it would hinder their socialisation and cause them to feel isolated and stressed,” he said. “It is my view that only the bottom part of the dividing partitions need to be solid as it’s important they can look over and see the dogs next to them if they want to. In my kennels at home, only the bottom 600mm of the partitions are solid, so it’s high enough so the dogs can’t grab each other, but they can still see each other if they want to. Also, when I open the roller door to my kennels at home the dogs get to lay in the sunshine, which they absolutely love, but if the partitions were 1.5 metres high they wouldn’t get any sunlight shining into their kennel area at all.”

GOTBA Vice-President Lynton Hogan, who acted as facilitator, said the draft Code had caused angst to participants and other stakeholders who were present and hoped that submissions from industry bodies and participants would make the final version of the Code more workable.

series of initial workshops hosted by the Greyhound Owners Trainers & Breeders Association of Victoria (GOTBA) will help to shape the association’s upcoming submission “Participants were disappointed with the draft Code – on the DEDJTR’s draft Code of Practice for the particularly its attempts to tell participants how to care Keeping of Racing Greyhounds. for, house and train their dogs. xperienced Red Cliffs trainer Barry Fullerton says the career of his rising star Jimmy Newob would not have reached such lofty heights without the use of a barking muzzle. Fullerton loosely fits barking muzzles on most of his greyhounds when they are kennelled at the track on race days, and believes the DEDJTR needs to amend section 6.2.5 of its draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds, which states that ‘barking muzzles must not be used for a period of more than five minutes at a time’ as they ‘prevent drinking and panting, which are essential for hydration and temperature regulation’.

“He (Jimmy Newob) is the best greyhound I’ve had in 44 years, but he wouldn’t be worth much as a race dog if I couldn’t put a barking muzzle on him before a race, and the same can be said for a lot of greyhounds,” Fullerton said. “Like all my dogs, he is very relaxed at home, but at the races he barks excessively, and without a barking muzzle on he would leave a big pool of saliva on the floor of his kennel bay. An excessive loss of saliva can leave greyhounds extremely dehydrated before a race, which is detrimental to their welfare”.

Jimmy Newob is an overly excited greyhound at the racetrack. Picture by Clint Anderson.

An executive summary of the workshops outlined many of the prevalent points to arise, including:

• the time, administrative and cost burden of the draft Code would all disproportionately impact hobby participants and those in regional areas, and potentially drive down their participation; • detailed rules and policies of greyhound racing already deal with many of the matters addressed by the draft Code. Those rules and policies are now policed and enforced, and are welfare and re-homing appropriate in the context of what the industry does; • the accessibility/desirability of the sport for new entrants may decrease if the draft Code was applied in its current form; and • participants not giving rise to adverse welfare outcomes should potentially be allowed to use existing facilities without replacement.

“It was felt that telling participants exactly what to do - such as how many times they must walk their dogs a week or how often they must change bedding or how often a dog must see a starting box or a straight track when in training – would not necessarily advance the welfare or re-homing potential of every greyhound, especially in an industry where the welfare of the greyhound is already the subject of regular inspection and assessment,” he said.

“I never fit them (barking muzzles) tightly and it certainly doesn’t block their airways or inhibit their breathing, it just minimises their ability to bark to full capacity, and because they can’t bark properly with them on they just lie down and relax, which is what greyhounds need to do before they race.”

AUGUST 2017

Hogan said many owners, breeders and trainers expressed the view that certain Code proposals, such as perimeter fencing, would create unnecessary costs, and that the Code appeared to address problems that aren’t known to be present.

Submissions close at 5pm on 14 August, 2017.

However, Fullerton insists that without barking muzzles, the excitement of race day leads to the dehydration of a lot of greyhounds, including Jimmy Newob, the runnerup in the 2017 Group 1 Harrison-Dawson, who has amassed more the $70,000 in prize money in the early stages of his career.

ast month’s Bendigo Cup included a presentation of almost $8,000 to Give Me 5 For Kids, which supports children’s hospital wards across regional Australia, including the Bendigo Health Children’s Ward. The Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association donated $7,000 to the Bendigo Health arm on the night, while the Manning’s Greyhound Complex chimed in with a further $935, which was based in part on the number of greyhounds that won wearing the yellow number five rug at Bendigo in June as well as funds raised from a Women on Track event held at the club. Scott Manning, a third generation manager of Manning’s Greyhound Complex in Eaglehawk, said there is a back story behind the donation from his business.

“Four years ago my niece was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour when she was just two years old, and she is now in remission. I’ve also got young children myself, so it’s nice to give something back to the local children’s hospital ward. We matched the Bendigo GRC’s pledge of $55 for every number five winner in June, and with 17 winners that meant a donation of $935 from Manning’s. It’s not a huge donation, but every little bit helps,” Manning said. Manning’s Greyhound Complex, which offers spelling, trialling and greyhound education services, has been in operation since 1972, and has a trial track virtually identical to former Melbourne metropolitan racetrack, Olympic Park. Each June, local radio and television networks get behind Give Me 5 For Kids cause by holding local fundraising events, and the charity drive has since raised almost $20 million nationally and benefited over 40 children’s hospital wards.

‘In beautiful weather the greatest coursing event yet recorded in the history of the sport in Australasia was brought to a conclusion today before the largest attendance of visitors that has ever been seen at a coursing meeting. The two special trains from Melbourne were well patronised, and many interstate visitors were present, thus indicating that the Waterloo Cup of 1923 has created the greatest interest in all parts of Australia. This season the National Coursing Club decided to increase the entry fee from £6/6/ to £10/10/, and many thought the change would bring failure to the historic event. However, there was an unprecedented rush for nominations and about 140 applications were received two months before the closing date. The National Coursing Club called a meeting to alter the conditions of the Waterloo Cup of 1923 to extend the limit of entries from 64 dogs to 128 dogs. It was agreed the winner would receive £1,000. Reports indicated that betting on the result was prolific.’

reyhound Racing Victoria has appointed one of Victoria’s most experienced senior detectives, Shane O’Connell, to the position of Integrity Operations Manager.

Submissions close at 5pm on 14 August, 2017.

Mr O’Connell joins GRV after a distinguished 34-year career with Victoria Police, most recently as Detective Senior Sergeant with the Victorian Police Homicide squad, where he managed three teams of investigators and intelligence operatives investigating some of the state’s worst crimes. Commencing his policing career at suburban stations around Melbourne, Mr O’Connell went on to serve in several task forces, including the high profile Purana task force on organised crime, as well as other investigations into drug-related crime, armed robbery and arson. Mr O’Connell follows in the footsteps of Charlie Bezzina, another of Victoria’s highly-commended detectives, who left GRV early this year after 12 months as the Senior Investigations Manager. He heads up a team of 10 investigators and intelligence officers who investigate breaches of the rules of racing with a specific emphasis on animal welfare matters. They work hand-inhand with GRV’s legal team, Stewards and the Animal Welfare Department. “After 34 years I’m looking forward to the challenge of working in a different environment and playing a part in developing the long-term sustainability and growth of greyhound racing in Victoria,” Mr O’Connell said.

industry by telling us about people who aren’t doing the right thing.” Although he has only been with GRV for a few weeks, Mr O’Connell is already impressed with the work of the Greyhound Adoption Program. “The GAP program has been an eye-opener – until now I had no real understanding of the extent of the work being done to re-home greyhounds.

“Problems occur when people have trouble adapting to change. Society is constantly changing and the greyhound industry needs to keep pace. We’ve seen what can happen through the experience in NSW and Canberra and we don’t want that to happen in Victoria.

“It’s about the whole of the dog’s life and GAP is helping more people to understand that greyhounds live a long, comfortable and healthy life and racing is just one part of their lives. GAP is helping the industry to connect with the community and gain greater exposure.”

“I would like to stress that we are here to protect the industry, we don’t pose a threat, it’s the minority of people not doing the right thing who threaten the viability and growth of the sport.

Mr O’Connell is not new to the world of sport – he is involved in sports management at board level, focusing on strategic planning and development programs for semi-professional athletes.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Mr O’Connell made the point that the vast majority of participants in Victoria were honest people who were concerned about the welfare of their greyhounds. He said most people in the industry are already adhering to industry regulations and legislation.

“I’ve already been to a few clubs, met a few people and I’ve seen a lot of passion and commitment. I’ll be looking to go out to more tracks soon to talk to participants and support stewards so we can see how we can improve what we do.”

elbourne AFL midfielder Bernie Vince (pictured) has agreed to stay on as ambassador for the Greyhound Adoption Program for another year. Bernie joined GAP last year as an ambassador to raise awareness about the greyhound re-homing program. Bernie has been a terrific ambassador for the program, promoting GAP at the Royal Melbourne Show and in media interviews. Channel Seven cameras captured the AFL star when he made his debut fostering a greyhound. He welcomed a brindle beauty Emily into his home – but not for long because Emily was quickly snapped up by a couple from Seaford. For someone who used to know very little about greyhounds, Bernie has become an admirer of the breed as a household pet. GAP and GRV are looking forward to continuing our association with Bernie.

his past month has probably been one of the most significant for Victorian greyhound racing participants with the release of the DEDJTR’s draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds. When you read the 82-page proposal it is clear that there is plenty of scope for feedback.

That is why it is so important for every person involved in our sport to put in a submission to explain what they think is appropriate for the future of our sport. To this end, GOTBA Vice President Lynton Hogan has spent many hours travelling around the state meeting with industry participants, collating a response that reflects these views. Lynton has formed a template to work from so that participants are informed of GOTBA’s concerns and can then, on your own or with assistance, prepare a submission. We have had a lot of media coverage about our concerns and we are convinced the right people are listening, however it is imperative we all respond so that we get this Code changed to a document that is workable and affordable. Once it is finalised we have no choice but to abide by it. I say to those of you may have some concerns, this is the final

By Sandra Reed, GOTBA President step in conforming to what the government expects in relation to the Milne report, which made recommendations after the live baiting scandal. As long as we get the necessary changes in the Code, I feel confident that with our enhanced working relationship with GRV, we will go forward with a bright and successful future. There will always be room for improvement and change and as long as it is affordable and endorsed by the participants and is of value to the dogs and the people involved in the sport, we will push for these changes. This month we have requested that the racing vests be changed back to the original stretch vests that have been used so successfully for a very long time. The new ones don’t stretch as much and restrict the movement, especially of the larger dogs. Also, we are talking to GRV about doing research and development study on track surfaces, to find out what is the safest racing surface for our dogs. For too long this has been neglected and we feel that to reduce injuries it is essential to get expert advice and then work with trainers to trial the recommended surface for them to decide what gives the best results. We are still working to get more lenient penalties for minor offences especially for people with a good record and longterm involvement in the industry. We are fortunate to have a new committee member in Geoff Miles and his experience and commitment to the industry is very welcome. We are always looking for people who are passionate about greyhound racing to join our committee.

The Greyhound Owners,Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for-profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers, who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of members and their greyhounds. econd reserve Landmark took full advantage of an unlikely race morning call-up to take out the Group 2 Triple M Bendigo Cup Final (425m) on July 7. Trained by Robert Britton, Landmark had initially been the second reserve for the $47,000 to-the-winner Cup. First reserve Jesaulenko had been elevated into the field earlier in the week following the scratching of rails runner Aussie Infrared. Landmark then fortuitously moved into box one following the withdrawal of Black Mumbo, necessitating a change of Friday night plans for Brendan Pursell, who trains Landmark in conjunction with Robert Britton, and his partner Emma Wardlaw.

It was such a hot field tonight, but when he drew box one we thought he was in with some chance.” Despite an excellent record off the red, five wins and five placings from 11 starts, Landmark was a $23.30 outsider, with fastest heat winner Zinzan Brooke, trained by Brooke Ennis, the $3.20 favourite. Landmark was last out of the boxes, but he drove through along the inside and after hitting the front turning for home he dashed clear, defeating Aston Bolero by 2.67 lengths in 23.70sec. “It has been a pretty courageous effort by the greyhound to win because he missed nearly three months of racing when he injured some tendons in a heat of the 2016 Shepparton Cup last September,” Wardlaw said. “Brendan and I live on Robert’s property. Brendan moved to Victoria in February 2016. We have our own set of kennels on Robert’s property with 29 greyhounds of our own. Landmark is the best of them along with Flyrite. Brendan was formerly involved in harness racing but is loving training the greyhounds, and I work as a nurse at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. I help him out with the greyhounds as much as I can.” It was Landmark’s 19th win from 52 starts at his first appearance in a Group event, having also been second reserve for the Warrnambool Cup in May. ne of Victorian greyhound racing’s most decorated superstars Unlawful Entry has been retired to stud, having won 22 races and almost $300,000 in prize money.

14

The brindle greyhound’s CV is extensive, with three track records to his name and several appearances in feature finals including victory in Tasmania’s premier race, the 2015 Group 1 Hobart Thousand. Unlawful Entry also made his mark in the broader community, earning over $27,000 for horse riding school Riding Develops Abilities in Oaklands Junction as a result of his win in the 2015 TAB Great Chase, a series that raises funds and provides social inclusion for around 100 Victorian groups that care for the intellectually and physically disabled. “I feel very privileged to have been involved in the Great Chase as the people at Riding Develops Abilities followed Unlawful Entry’s career very closely and I still keep in touch with them. They actually wanted to keep him as a pet once he finished racing, but he’s staying on my couch at home as a stud career beckons,” owner trainer Kelly Bravo said. Unlawful Entry’s stud commitments are being managed by Paul Westerveld at Meticulous Lodge for $1,100 per serve. GRV’s TAB Great Chase series is set to continue in 2017, inviting the disability sector to participate in the enjoyment of greyhound racing at Victoria’s 13 race clubs. The Great Chase has been conducted every year since 2003, and in that time has led to more than half a millon dollars in much-needed funds being donated to groups that care for the intellectually and physically disabled. Perhaps more importantly, the series has encouraged social inclusion for thousands of people with disabilities, as they have enjoyed free social outings at the races including having meals and the chance to meet some greyhounds.

Groups attending Great Chase community days at their local race club in 2017 will be allocated greyhounds they can follow for the day for the chance to share in $26,000 ($2,000 per club), while eight groups will share in $24,000 at the carnival-like Grand Final at The Meadows on October 25, with a total of $50,000 to be distributed across Victoria’s disability sector from this year’s series.

"The width of the shade sails cover the length of two cars parked head to head, or the length of a car and a greyhound trailer," explained David Straw, GRV’s Senior Infrastructure Project Manager - Facilities and Infrastructure. "Bendigo and Shepparton are two of Victoria’s hottest tracks in the warmer months, and those clubs will also be having misting water systems installed in their kennel and wash bay areas, as well as the possibility (subject to successful trials) of having ground surfaces painted with a special paint that makes it cooler for greyhounds underfoot as they make their way from the car park to the kennel area and out on to the track.”

Straw said GRV has been confronted with a number of challenges with regard to the potential roll-out of the shade sails at other Victorian clubs. “The initial plan was to have shade sails at all of our 13 clubs, and we are trying to work through a variety of issues relating to things like space, council restrictions and land ownership at some clubs," he said. “We are, however, on target to have shade sails installed at The Meadows, Sandown Park and Sale this financial year.” The lowest part of the shade sails is 3.0 metres above the ground, tall enough for the type of vehicles that are often used by trainers, and visitor buses, to fit under them. The cost of the shade sails was approximately $85,000 (Bendigo) and $120,000 (Shepparton), with the difference in cost relating to size as there were space constraints at Bendigo.

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October 2016 to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well: • Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au • All sessions for August - October 2017 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. • To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: • have a current C5 vaccination; and • not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“winddown period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing. • Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. • Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP.

'R

esilient' probably isn’t the first word used to describe a retired greyhound, maybe 'lazy', 'loyal' or even at a stretch 'crazy' can spring to mind but like many things in life, the norm will often be broken. Charlie joined the tripod squad in April after breaking his front leg for the second time when he was playing in the backyard, after months of recovery and plenty of tender loving care Therapy dog. “The vets tried to fix his front leg, at first with a halo cast and then a normal cast before we made the decision to amputate his leg because of how weak it was,” owner Andrea Vos said. “He was so resilient throughout the whole process and being able to mentally and physically handle having only three legs.

Andrea believes that Charlie has all the makings of a Delta Therapy dog because of his love for people and his ability, although a tough ask – to receive pats from absolutely everyone. The Delta Dog Therapy program is run to provide the joy of animal companionship to those who need it most and it is estimated that these beautiful dogs brighten the lives of more than 20,000 people each week. Delta Dogs visit health care facilities and schools to spend time and lend an ear to people in need. “The Delta Dog Therapy Program isn’t just about Charlie it is something that I have been really looking forward to,” Vos said. Vos and Charlie now have a local nursing home lined up to visit weekly near their home in Geelong.

KENNEL COUGH OUTBREAK After a recent spike in infectious Kennel Cough across the Victorian greyhound racing industry, GRV is reminding participants that this highly infectious disease can remain infectious for up to three months after symptoms disappear. GRV recommends that all participants speak to their veterinarian as soon as possible about preventative measures, including vaccination, to decrease the spread of the current outbreak of this disease. Further information on Kennel Cough can be obtained at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/faqs/kennel-cough

GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding.

GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.

For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.

By Andrew Copley

of Victoria President, Peter Craig, this series is aimed at encouraging more trainers to take advantage of all that coursing has to offer including educating young greyhounds, improving a greyhound's fitness and confidence as well as prolonging racing careers.

F

ollowing on from the success of Greyhound Racing Victoria's new video series on coursing that was released a few weeks ago, a second set of videos has just been released in the lead up to Victorian coursing's most lucrative event, the Waterloo Cup, the 2017 Waterloo Cup on August 26 + 27. The second series focuses on: • Welfare issues and how to deal with them. • Improving circle-track performances and the struggle for big trainers. • Prolonging careers and how circle-track stars stack up. • Advantages of trialling at a coursing track.

‘If you’re going to run your dog a couple of times in a day without the appropriate electrolytes then you run a bigger chance of your dog getting acidosis or cramping.’

Improving circle-track performance and the struggle for big trainers

Prolonging careers and how circle-track stars stack up

‘You don’t get a lot of big trainers with big teams come along to dominate coursing meetings because it’s just not physically possible for them to do it.’

‘We recently had a greyhound who had won $180,000 in stake money get knocked out in the first round by a dog that is probably better suited to coursing than he is to the circle.’

Advantages of trialling at a coursing track ‘You look at horse racing and (leading trainer) Darren Weir talks of using the big uphill straight at Ballarat. It’s the same with the dogs, it takes a lot of the stress off certain limbs.’

To watch this series go to greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/video-archive

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Welfare issues and how to avoid them

The series also includes videos on 'A trip to Lang Lang for trialling', 'Common questions', 'First season coursers & samesex races' and 'Post-event recovery'.

AUGUST 2017

Drawing on the knowledge of National Coursing Association

which carries prize money in excess of $25,000, will this year be run at Longwood. It's not too late to get your greyhounds ready for this time-honoured event, and who knows, the 2017 Waterloo Cup winner might be relaxing in your backyard right now.

ANTICIPATION BUILDS FOR HORSHAM RE-OPENING By Andrew Copley

G

reyhound Racing Victoria has given Horsham the green light to re-open for racing on Tuesday, 1 August (twilight) after the club conducted a successful picnic meeting on July 25. “We ran seven half fields – six over the 410 metres with our new drop-in boxes, and one over the 485 metres distance,” Horsham GRC Manger, Justin Brilliant said of the picnic meeting. “We had a number of local trainers here, and some from Ballarat and Bendigo, and they all seemed happy with how the track performed.” Brilliant said the new track was more spacious and had more camber than was previously the case, lending itself to less interference. “Greyhounds seemed to hold their line well. The best time we’ve had over the 410 metres is 23.50sec, while over the 485 metres greyhounds have been running in the 27.80s, and I expect they’ll go quicker than that once the track settles,” he added. Brilliant said representatives from the Tweed Heads Coursing Club, which hasn’t raced since December after selling its land and track, would visit Horsham in the coming weeks with a view to building a new track identical to Horsham at a new site.
