CEO’s Update Greyhound Racing Victoria’s 2016-17 Annual Report was tabled in the Victorian Parliament on 19 October 2017 and it, along with a short video of the year in review are available online at grv.org.au/annualreport. It provides a comprehensive overview of the progress GRV and the industry have made on its reform journey over the past financial year and highlights two key points. The first is that there has been a real and measurable cultural change in how racing greyhounds in Victoria are managed and cared for from rearing to racing to retirement and re-homing. This change is reflected by a 57 per cent increase in re-homed greyhounds with 1314 placed through GAP and a further 1379 through third-party adoption agencies, the RSPCA and industry participants. There has also been a 54 percent reduction in euthanasia rates, overbreeding is now no longer occurring and sustainable breeding options are being developed. GRV also achieved 3964 kennel inspections in 2016-17, a 191 per cent increase on the previous year and it is anticipated that before the end of 2017, all properties with racing or breeding greyhounds will have been visited by a welfare inspector. Secondly, the report also shows that GRV now has the capabilities and resources to act as an effective, accountable and proactive regulator and in some areas, is now a leader among all Australia’s racing codes. Inspection, investigation and prosecution functions are now fully integrated, there has been a 56 per cent increase in swabbing for banned and controlled substances, new professional career paths and training for stewards is now in place and, from 1 July 2017, all key race day staff now report directly to GRV.

Sydney data modelling in its design for future upgrades which also points the way towards developing national standards for greyhound track design. In other news, GRV is working with the recently formed Victorian Greyhound Racing Clubs Association to hold information Q&A sessions on the new Planning Guidelines. It is expected that about four of these sessions will be held across Victoria, with the first session to be held at Geelong. These sessions will provide an overview of the new planning scheme, detail on key issues and advice on the planning applications process. Dates and times for these sessions will be announced shortly. Following valuable feedback from participants, GRV’s Industry Consultative Group, the clubs, GOTBA and other stakeholders, GRV has revised its proposal to provide for a more equitable distribution of the increased prize money and additional funds to stimulate breeding. The new proposal will increase the yearly minimum prizemoney pool in a full year by $3.25 million including up to $1.4 million for a new Sustainable Breeding Support Package of prizemoney and bonuses for owners and breeders of VicBred greyhounds. For those of you looking to buy a good Victorian racing greyhound, a reminder that the Ready 2 Race annual Auction will be held on November 18. Also coming up is the Hume Cup on 6 November which is always a great family event and of course on 24 November, there’s the world’s most prestigious greyhound race, the Melbourne Cup and I hope to see you all there. Tomorrow 9.40pm, 525m

AFL games record holder Brent ‘Boomer’ Harvey meets Fanta Bale, the $2.20 favourite for the Group 2 Topgun Stayers (725m) at The Meadows tomorrow night.

EASY AS SHE GOES Million-dollar mark on line for Fanta Bale

CHAMPION Victorian greyhound Fanta Bale will join retired superstars Fernando Bale and Dyna Double One as Australia’s only million-dollar greyhounds if she wins the Group 2 Topgun Stayers (725m) at The Meadows tomorrow night. Having earned $964,835 on the racetrack, Fanta Bale is a hot $2.20 favourite to claim the $75,000 first prize on a night of racing that also

ANDREW COPLEY includes the prestigious $214,500 Topgun (525m) for sprinters. When it comes to versatility, Fanta Bale is in a league of her own, being the only greyhound to have won at Group 1 level over the sprint, middle and staying distances. She has won six Group 1 races in total, and given that she only turned

three in August, she could have another 12-18 months of racing ahead of her. Away from the track, however, she is just like any other greyhound, according to trainer Robert Britton. “She’s friendly, laid back and she loves a scratch behind the ear,” he said. “She’s probably a little more subdued than most other greyhounds,

but the thing that sets her apart is that she has so much ability.” The Lara trainer said Fanta Bale’s relaxed personality was on show when she caught up with AFL games record holder and new Victorian greyhound racing ambassador Brent “Boomer” Harvey. “She’s always pretty low key and relaxed and not really the playful type,” Britton said.

FRIENDLY, BUT FURIOUS RIVALS PAGE 45

“She had no interest in chasing the footy “Boomer” was kicking around when they met, whereas one of my other greyhounds, Bruce Tycoon, was loving chasing the ball. “Fanta prefers to save her energy for her races.” Britton said Fanta Bale’s determination and consistency were the keys to her success. FANTA FEVER HITS THE MEADOWS By Andrew Copley Fanta fever hit The Meadows at the Sky Racing Topgun on 28 October, just hours after Winx captured her third W. S. Cox Plate at nearby Moonee Valley. Adding to what is always a major event on Australia’s greyhound racing calendar, Fanta Bale’s appearance in the Group 2 Topgun Stayers (725m) made it all the more interesting, with the versatile stayer needing to win to join Fernando Bale and Dyna Double One in greyhound racing’s million-dollar club. Despite getting off to a brilliant start, Fanta Bale couldn’t hold

out the fast-finishing South Australian Bogie Bekim, with her second placing seeing her finish the night on $986,170. TAB was certainly on board, opening a dual-code ‘Winx A Million’ market (Winx into Fanta Bale) on the day at the inflated odds of $3.50. The pool held a whopping $31,695 despite being opened just seven hours before the jump of the Cox Plate. While many attended Topgun night in the hope Fanta Bale would crack the million, it’s likely another opportunity is just around the corner, with the Group 1 Bold Trease (715m) at Sandown Park a likely target.

NOVEMBER 2017

Victorian star Up Hill Jill claimed a thoroughly deserved and overdue Group 1 breakthrough on one of Australian greyhound racing’s greatest stages, with a brilliant all-the-way victory in the Group 1 Sky Racing Topgun (525m) at The Meadows on 28 October. After winning the Group 2 Sandown Laurels last December, the ultra-consistent speedster has been a regular in feature events throughout 2017, but frustratingly for trainer Dave Geall and owner/breeder wife Rose a second Group title has proven elusive.

She ran second in three Group 1 events, (in order) the National Futurity, Sapphire Crown and Peter Mosman Classic, while she also found one better in the Richmond Oaks, Warrnambool Classic and Bob Payne Spring Sprint, all at Group 2 level. Up Hill Jill’s other Group appearance came when sixth in the Golden Easter Egg. But all that disappointment was forgotten on Saturday when she overcame a testing outside draw to produce a flawless front-running exhibition against the best sprinters in the land.

“It has been a frustrating run and I was starting to think she’d never win a Group 1,” said a jubilant Geall, celebrating Group 1 glory for the first time. “I certainly didn’t think she could win tonight. Not from box 7 against the best dogs in Australia, but she has and it is a huge thrill.” Up Hill Jill ($13) flew out and after turning for home with a commanding lead, she defeated Aston Dee Bee by 3.43 lengths in 29.89sec, with Temlee and Silver Chief winner Lightning Frank in third place. Just the third female greyhound to win the Topgun since the race was first run in 1993, Up Hill Jill took her record to 27 wins from 50 starts, with the $150,000 winner’s purse extending her earnings beyond $400,000.

Share your knowledge and share in the excitement By Andrew Copley

G

reyhound Monthly Victoria readers are generally experienced greyhound racing participants, and we imagine that you have been approached by a number people over the years wanting to buy into a greyhound.

GRV’s Ready 2 Race Greyhound Sales provides a platform for people to buy greyhounds with a level of confidence, as the dogs trial twice before going to auction. Furthermore, as the greyhounds are at least 16 months of age, most are only a few weeks or months away from beginning their racing careers. Annual prize money in Victorian greyhound racing has just climbed to $46 million (up from $43 million) and with fewer dogs in the racing system the time has never been better to own a race dog. GRV invites you to bring potential buyers to the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association for the finals and auction on Saturday, 18 November. Your knowledge and expertise could help new owners snare a bargain buy that you could train or part-own with them, and together you could share in the excitement of racing a greyhound. We are even putting on a complimentary afternoon tea – to be held immediately prior to the auction on Saturday 18 November – where guest speakers will provide an insight into successful greyhound ownership and tips on building fruitful owner/trainer relationships.

Go to ready2race.grv.org.au after Wednesday 15 November for more information including kennelling and racing times. BONUS RACES The top eight prize money earners from the 2017 Ready 2 Race Sales will be eligible to compete in a $7,250 Mid Year Final (425m) at Bendigo in July 2018 and an $18,000 R2R Final (515m) at Sandown Park in November 2018.

PERFECT STRIKE RATE FOR GAP ADOPTION DAY By Suzanne McKenzie It was a clean sweep at GAP’s penultimate Adoption Day for 2017 which was held at Sandown on 21 October, with all 32 greyhounds walking out the door to new homes. A terrific crowd of about 400 people turned up to meet the greyhounds. Many were ready to give a dog a new home, for others it was an opportunity to find out more about the breed. The dog trailers will make their next trip down the Calder Freeway to Geelong on Sunday, 3 December, for the final adoption day in 2017. While most of the dogs at Sandown have racing backgrounds, there was one that stood out among the crowd due to his stellar performances on the track. Danny, formerly known as Dublin Bull, accrued $156,811 in prize money during his racing career, winning 21 from 69 starts, plus 13 minor placings. GAP manager Larissa Darragh said GAP has re-homed many prizewinning greyhounds, and Danny is up there as one of the most successful in terms of career prizemoney.

living away from a traditional kennel – and I understand that not every dog is able to adjust but Danny got into the GAP program the first time.” Steve co-owned Danny with two former school mates and together they have been racing greyhounds with Jeff since the 1980s. “It’s a good way to stay in touch with each other,” Steve said. Jeff suggested placing Danny with someone he knows who prepares greyhounds for the wind-down into retirement. “They need to be out of the kennel environment and away from the track before they go to GAP and I think this woman does it as a labour of love. We are happy that Danny is living comfortably and happily somewhere and credit should go to her and any other volunteer who helps make that adjustment happen.” On Sunday Danny walked away from Sandown to his new home in Koo Wee Rup.

“He is a good example of how all kinds of greyhounds can be transitioned to a new life away from the racetrack. It’s all about their temperament and what’s been done to prepare them for rehoming. It’s important that they spend at least one to two months away from the track – ideally in a backyard with some supervised access inside the house to acclimatise them to unfamiliar sights, sounds, smells and floor surfaces. They need to be able to walk on a lead and must be well-socialised with people and other breeds of dogs. Danny’s owners did a good job getting him ready for GAP.” Trained by one of Victoria’s best-known trainers Jeff Britton, Dublin Bull saved his best ‘til last when he took first place and $40,000 in his last outing in the Group 2 Summer Distance Plate in Sydney back in January.

“Danny was a ripper. Jeff encouraged us to try the GAP program are we are glad we did. There is a bit of attention needed to help the dogs adjust to their new lives. It took Danny about a month of

Unfortunately, Danny subsequently sustained an injury during trackwork, according to his previous owner Steve Hynes, and the decision was made to retire the dog and prepare him for rehoming.

GRV SEEKS INDUSTRY EXPERTISE

The Breeding Reference group will be Chaired by Gavin Goble, General Manager Animal Welfare, while the Racing Reference Group will be Chaired by Scott Robins, Acting General Manager - Racing.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Greyhound Racing Victoria is working with the recently formed Victorian Greyhound Racing Clubs Association to establish a Breeding Reference Group and a Racing Reference Group.

The two reference groups will include representatives from Victoria’s 13 race clubs. GRV looks forward to finalising and announcing group members in the coming weeks.

7

Industry workshops conducted in 2016/17 highlighted the need for GRV’s Management team to obtain specific feedback on racing and breeding issues, as well as a need to enhance means of communications and information sharing with participants on key topical issues. The establishment of these reference groups is intended to complement the Industry Consultative Group (ICG), a sub-Committee of the GRV Board which has a formal role in providing advice to the GRV Board in relation to issues of significance affecting the sport of greyhound racing. The Reference Groups are being established as practical working groups that will work with and provide advice to Management.

NEW PRIZE MONEY AND BREEDING SUSTAINABILITY PACKAGE APPROVED The Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) has approved increases to minimum prize money and the introduction of a breeding sustainability support package to commence from 15 November, 2017.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

The total package equates to annual increase of up to $3.95M comprising $2.55M in additional prizemoney and up to $1.40M available to be won in the new VICGREYS program to be shared between owners, trainers and breeders.

8

The package, which has been modified as a result of feedback received from industry stakeholders, focusses directly on increasing prize money to be shared between owners and trainers at the lower levels of racing whilst maintaining Metro

Level 1 (Meadows Saturday night and Sandown Thursday night meetings) prize money at current levels. Minimum prize money will increase by $1.18m (+6.1%) across the bottom two tiers of races at Level 2 (Provincial Full Stakes) meetings, whilst Level 3 prize money (Tier 3, Healesville, All Maiden, Rankings) will increase across the board by $1.37m (+21.6%) The original proposal was to increase trainers’ Starters’ Fees to $80 per runner, however this has been removed from the package. Travel and Starters’ Fees remain at their current levels of $70 per trainer and an additional $10 per starter at all meetings.

The VICGREYS package will be implemented in December 2017, with an exact date to be confirmed. VICGREYS Package The approved package also focusses on supporting and rewarding sustainable breeding in Victoria, by allocating up to $1.4M in annual VICGREYS payments available to be won on around 1,900 selected Victorian races for owners and breeders of Vic Bred greyhounds in a new Breeding Package. All Vic Bred greyhounds of all ages will be eligible for the VICGREYS program immediately with no nomination fees payable to be eligible and no restrictions applicable on the location of the owner or breeder of the greyhound. SUSTAINABLE BREEDING Greyhound Racing Victoria has listened to feedback from Victorian greyhound participants who have identified breeding fees and delays in the return of DNA analysis prior to a greyhound being registered for breeding as important factors that may contribute to, or delay, a participant’s decision to breed.

Full details on these initiatives will be published at grv.org.au/breeding in early November.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

For information on pink card registration see Page 25 of this magazine.

NOVEMBER 2017

GRV has recognised participant led solutions to encourage sustainable breeding and, for the period 15 November 2017 to 30 June 2018, the GRV Board has determined to: • Waive registration fees related to registration of breeding females ($150), registration of results of mating ($50) and application to register service ($40) • Reimburse fees paid to Greyhounds Australasia during that period for greyhound DNA analysis fee ($180) for named female greyhounds • Introduce an alternative process for pink card registration where a DNA analysis of that greyhound has been taken, but not yet received. To be eligible for this alternative process that participant must sign and return a GRV approved waiver. A copy of this waiver can be obtained by phoning GRV’s Advisory Services & Registration Team on 8329 1100.

QUEENSLANDER’S GOLD CLASS RETURN By Andrew Copley Queensland superstar Thirty Talks ($4.80) won the 2017 Group 2 Pet Panels Geelong Gold Cup (460m) on 27 October with a brilliant come-from-behind performance against all odds. As he did in his heat, Thirty Talks stormed over the top of his rivals in the home straight to snare the win, and his campaign was particularly satisfying considering he had endured a dropped back muscle in January, keeping him sidelined for six months. “It’s a very sweet victory to win a big race like this against some of Victoria’s best greyhounds on their home soil,” Brett said after the race, in which Bewildering ($2.90Fav) ran second and Aston Miley ($4.40) third in the time of 25.377sec. Thirty Talks (June 2014 Where’s Pedro – Unfinished) was bred by George Kairouz and is owned by Leonard Antonio. He took his record to 29 wins from 47 starts and $366,127 in prize money.

COMPULSORY TRIALS FOR UNRACED GREYHOUNDS AMONG DISCUSSION ITEMS By Andrew Copley At its most recent meeting on 21 October, the ICG was presented with detailed research on the attitudes of participants, and the general public, towards greyhound racing, as well as an update on the state-wide planning scheme.

The potential introduction of compulsory trials for unraced greyhounds in the hope of reducing racetrack injuries was discussed at length, while ICG members were also asked to outline the advantages and disadvantages of introducing short course races at Victorian metropolitan tracks, Sandown and The Meadows.

The ICG’s opinion was sought on two alternate options regarding a prize money and breeding sustainability package for Victoria, which is coming into effect on 15 November.

Items for discussion at future ICG meetings include the role of muscle manipulators (greyhound chiropractors) and the scope for greyhound syndications.

WHAT IS THE ICG? In 2016, the Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria appointed an Industry Consultative Group (ICG), with members having appropriate experience and diversity across a number of areas. The ICG meets every six weeks to discuss major issues facing the industry, out of which suggestions are forwarded to GRV’s Board for consideration.

RACE CLUBS TO HOST PLANNING SUPPORT SESSIONS The new planning measures that took effect in August streamline planning approval processes for new or existing greyhound facilities providing a much-needed set of consistent and measurable requirements.

Independent planning experts will facilitate the sessions to provide information to participants and answer questions or concerns they may have around permits in their areas.

It is important to note that a facility with an existing permit may continue to operate in accordance with their permit without having to obtain a new permit or comply with new requirements.

The sessions will be held at Geelong, Cranbourne, Bendigo and Traralgon (pictured), with dates to soon be announced at grv.org.au.

More information about the planning requirements and exemptions can be found by searching for 'greyhound' at: planning.vic.gov.au

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Four greyhound racing clubs around Victoria will be conducting sessions next month to help participants with the Victorian Government’s planning amendments for greyhound facilities, which reduce the requirements for planning permits.

Words from the late George Schofield’s Order of Service funeral booklet:

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

“DOGS COME INTO OUR LIVES TO TEACH US ABOUT LOVE, THEY DEPART TO TEACH US ABOUT LOSS. A NEW DOG NEVER REPLACED AN OLD DOG; IT MERELY EXPANDS THE HEART. IF YOU HAVE LOVED MANY DOGS 12YOUR HEART IS VERY BIG”.

GREYHOUND RACING FAREWELLS A LEGEND IN ‘OLD MAGIC HANDS’ NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS: • GOTBA Executive (32 years) • Greyhound Racing Control Board (now known as GRV) Member (16 years) • Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association Director (8 years) • Ballarat GRC Committee (10 years) • Ken Carr Medallist (2006) • OAM in 2009 for services to Greyhound Racing (2009) • GRV Hall of Fame inductee (2009) • Australian Greyhound Racing Association (AGRA) Hall of Fame inductee (2015)

G

eorge Schofield was one of nature’s gentlemen, and despite being raised in tough times, family members insist he led ‘a fortunate life’.

Fortunate, too, were the many people who came to know and love George, and when he passed away on October 2, 2017 aged 99, he left Victorian greyhound racing with a legacy that may well be unrivalled. In recent times he was best known for his work as an animal chiropractor, and while he specialised in greyhounds, people would bring their lame dogs of any breed from as far as South Australia and New South Wales to George’s humble old tin work shed at his home in the outer northern Melbourne suburb of Yuroke.

One of George’s mottos was to never give up on healing a dog in need, but there was so much more to this great man’s story.

He started in the sport in his early teens by helping out a trainer at night after a full day’s work, and he’d do it 'for love - not money’, before later becoming a trainer in his own right. George was also a prominent greyhound racing administrator, including spending a remarkable 32 years on the board of the Greyhound Owners, Trainers & Breeders Association, where he fought hard for the betterment of the sport during some testing times. This was one of his great passions, and George, while a

After some back-and-forth negotiations with Shan’s View’s owner, Schofield eventually bought the greyhound for an unheard of sum of 2,000 pounds in the days you could buy a house in Richmond for 800 pounds. A short time, and just a handful of race starts later, Shan’s View broke down while competing in the 1960 Waterloo Cup series, never to race again. Fortunately, the dog had shown enough in his brief racing career to warrant going to stud, where he initially received limited support from breeders before becoming a stud sensation, winning six Victorian sire premierships. George and Shan’s View are both inductees in GRV’s Hall of Fame, while George is also a Ken Carr Medallist and the recipient of an Order of Australia Medal as well as an inductee into the Australian Greyhound Racing Association (AGRA) Hall of Fame. Greyhound racing aside, George was a jack-of-all-trades during his lifetime, spending time working as a chef, a selftaught barber and a baker. Legend says his needling of dough in making bread gave him the strength in his fingers that helped him to later become an animal chiropractic doyen. He was also in the army and served in Papua New Guinea in the 1940s worked with the Victorian Police Dog Squad, the Australian Customs Drug Detector Dog unit, the Office of Corrections Dog Squad and with Dogs from the Security & Emergency Services Group. He was a staunch family man, growing up particularly closely with brother Ralph, and was a much-loved father (of four), grandfather and great grandfather. Three of George’s children – Maureen (wife of former GRV CEO, John Stephens), Peter and Greg – are registered greyhound trainers. George believed there was no need to swear and he was renowned for treating women with the utmost respect. His grandchildren loved a flutter on the dogs with their ‘Pop’, because he’d cover the losses and go halves in the winnings. George’s final act of generosity came at his funeral – at The Meadows on 10 October - where hundreds of his home-grown lemons were provided for people to take home. And, as his son Peter pointed out - the good news for all the dogs in heaven with a sore back, neck or shoulders is they now have the great George Schofield to fix them up.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Not long after leaving school at the tender age of 12 to milk cows for a living to help support his family (he was the third eldest of six siblings), George was introduced to greyhound racing, an industry he eventually dedicated 85 years of his life to.

He was also a prominent stud master, with his acquisition of the greyhound Shan’s View forming a legendary tale. At the time Schofield was 41, and living in Coburg with his young family, working around the clock as a bookmaker, trainer and stud master just to make ends meet. He put everything on the line to purchase a young NSW race dog named Shan’s View, a decision that initially aggrieved his wife, Marie.

NOVEMBER 2017

For half a century he worked six days a week from 10am-4:30pm, having Tuesdays off, right up until the ripe old age of 97, before spending his final two years in an aged care facility. George refused to charge owners for treating adopted greyhounds, and he took great satisfaction when helping paralysed dogs to walk again, of which there were many.

friend to all Victorian greyhound clubs, also served on the boards of the MGRA, Sandown GRC and the Ballarat GRC (he is a life member of all three clubs).

News

By Sandra Reed, GOTBA President

Your GOTBA is now being called upon to help the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) in revamping the draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds, so that it is workable and affordable. We have been assured by DEDJTR and the politicians that they do not want greyhound racing to close because of a Code that is unable to be complied with. Consequently, we have had three meetings with them in Melbourne and also two full days hosting them around greyhound properties to point out what works in the best interests of our greyhounds’ welfare and how the proposed Code could be adjusted.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

We have been advised we will be invited to a further meeting before the code is released and hope by then the revised code will have addressed our many concerns about what was originally proposed. We are hoping the new code will be released by the end of the year or January at the latest, so that participants can move forward with confidence knowing what is expected in planning for their future.

14

On a positive note there has been overwhelming support for option 1 of the new proposed prize money increases and breeders incentive scheme. GOTBA has worked hard to ensure owners, trainers and breeders all benefit from this package and that there is a better distribution over first, second and third place money. We have recommended that future increases go to second and third placings until the percentage distribution is 65 per cent for first, 20 per cent second and 15 per cent third, and after that a payment for fourth could be considered. The new breeder bonuses will greatly assist in the current expenses to help breeders carry pups that they have been

unable to sell. But rest assured there are other measures in place to create syndicates that will open up more opportunities for selling your pups. If you know of people who would like to have a share in a greyhound, then take the time to form your own syndicate and manage it yourself to give your dogs the best opportunity. We all need to be working to get new owners into the sport so while waiting for others to do their job it would be great if we could all promote the value of owning a greyhound. With more money on offer and our market share continuing to increase, and the reduced number of dogs, it has never been easier to win a race. There is now work to be done on the new Victorian Planning Scheme for the keeping of racing greyhounds. GOTBA have been working with GRV to get clarification on what this scheme means to councils. How will they interpret it? It is vague in some parts and open to interpretation. Fortunately, we can lobby to have it altered and are hoping this scheme will eventually make it easier to get council permits for the keeping of greyhounds. We will certainly try to achieve this through our consultations. There are many exciting moves within the industry to bring people together for a sustainable future. However for this to happen successfully you must take an active part in the social aspect of the sport. Talk to the GOTBA committee and bring your concerns and ideas to us so that we can inform you of the best plan of action - it might be we need to act on your behalf. We cannot assist you if you don’t ask. Come along to our AGM at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club on Sunday, 26 November at 6pm to hear what we have done this year - you might be surprised at what we do to ensure our sport continues to successfully move forward. We would also like to hear your ideas on how you would like us to represent you into the future. Light refreshments will be provided. So please make the effort to support us by attending.

The Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a notfor-profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of member and their greyhounds. Current members are Sandra Reed (President and Treasurer), Robert Britton and Lynton Hogan (co-Vice Presidents), Gayle Osbourne (Secretary), John Reid, John Cheeseman, Karen Leek, Geoff Miles and Brian Selleck.

MIATA PUPS CLAIM A TRIFECTA AND THE BEST IS YET TO COME By Andrew Copley It was a big day for Miata at The Meadows on Wednesday 4 October when the champion former Western Australian pin-up girl produced the first three placegetters in Race 3 - with Loch Tight, Loch Freddie and Snap Loch combining for a $127.70 Trifecta payout. “I was confident one of them would win the race but you never expect to train a Trifecta,” said Samantha Ferguson, who co-trains the litter along with Correy Grenfell. “They all try their hearts out and it’s great that they’re winning races, and the exciting thing is that they’re learning all the time.” Miata was a drawcard front-running stayer who won an incredible 42 races from 51 starts all over Australia including four Group 1s and $715,508 in prize money. “The litter is showing a bit of strength like their mum and I think we’re yet to see the best of them. Hopefully they eventually get a bit more ground,” Ferguson added.

Charge to the first turn: Miata trio Loch Tight (6), Loch Freddie (7) and Snap Loch (2) went on to fill the Trifecta, while a fourth pup from the litter, Mia Brae (red rug) ran sixth. Picture by Paul Munt.

A total of six pups from the 22-month-old Kinloch Brae litter – Miata’s third which was bred by the Stuart Wheeler Syndicate – raced at the meeting, with the mating also producing the winner of Race 1 (Loch Mac) and the runner-up in Race 9 (Tahleia Brae).

2016/17 Annual Report:

Record number of greyhounds adopted out in stellar year for Victorian Greyhound Racing

G

reyhound Racing Victoria has set a new record for greyhounds rehomed in 2016-17 with 1314 dogs adopted out through the organisation’s Greyhound Adoption Program.

It is the first time the program has adopted more than 1000 dogs in a financial year, smashing the previous record of 812 set in 2015-16. The 65 per cent increase in adoptions is one of many statistics revealed in GRV’s 2016-17 annual report - which was tabled at Parliament on 17 October - that show a significant cultural improvement in Victorian greyhound racing over the past two years. In addition to the 1314 greyhounds to have been adopted out through GRV’s Greyhound Adoption Program, a further 1379 were rehomed through other channels such as third-party adoption agencies Gippsland Greys, Greyhound Safety Net and the RSPCA.

A significant cultural change in how racing greyhounds in Victoria are managed and cared for from rearing to racing to retirement and re-homing. 57% increase in re-homed greyhounds 54% reduction in euthanasia rates Overbreeding in Victoria addressed and sustainable breeding options being developed 3,964 kennel inspections - 191% increase Building GRV’s capabilities to achieve its goal of establishing a strong, proactive regulatory capability 56% increase in swabbing for banned and controlled substances Inspection, investigation and prosecution functions fully integrated All key race day staff now reporting directly to GRV

Mr Pakula said it was wonderful the way the TAB Great Chase combined with the disability community to raise funds: “Our community benefits greatly,” he said.

Despacito wasn’t the only winner on the day – Autism Plus from Melton took home a $10,000 cheque to bolster programs and activities for clients. The group was one of 45 disability and aged care organisations invited to The Meadows to enjoy an afternoon of racing, hospitality, and the chance to share in $24,000 cash prizes.

The Grand Final wraps up this unique combination of racing and community events which began in August. The series was spread across 13 Victorian racing clubs.

Autism Plus Disability Support Worker Carmel Grogan, said the prize made a huge difference to the organisation.

Mr Andrews personally thanked GRV CEO Alan Clayton and the Board for the work they have done with participants on a journey of reform over the past two years. He announced a $43,000 grant for shade sails at The Meadows, which will be matched by GRV. “Our government supports greyhound racing,” Mr Andrews said. “Our position will not change.”

TAB Chief Tabcorp Operating Officer, Wagering and Media Adam Rytenskild said: “Tabcorp has been a proud supporter of the TAB Great Chase for the last decade. It’s a fantastic initiative and we’re pleased to partner with Greyhound Racing Victoria to help contribute funds to community groups and to bring communities together to share in the joy of greyhound racing.” Despacito, who was also bred by Seona Thompson, made it four wins from six starts when scoring by a length over Hasten Slowly and Nike Viper in 30.06sec. The son of Black Magic Opal and El Brooklyn is owned by the Unique Syndicate, which comprises Thompson and Julie Stockdale of Gippsland.

“It’s better than Christmas. It means we’ll be able to provide so many more programs, go out on more outings. It will be so beneficial for our guys,” Ms Grogan said. “Thank you so much, we’ve enjoyed the day, even if we hadn’t won anything it still would have been great. It’s so nice to feel so welcomed, to be embraced like we have.”

This year 1440 guests from 135 organisations attended the series to enjoy a great day at the races, entertainment, meals and giveaways and to share in cash prizes. Since 2003, GRV has donated more than $500,000 to participating organisations through the series, which is organised in partnership with Tabcorp.

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October 2016 to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well: • Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au • All sessions for November 2017 to January 2018 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. • To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: • have a current C5 vaccination; and • not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“winddown period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing. • Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. • Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. FORMER TRAINER’S GENEROUS BEQUEST By Suzanne McKenzie Barbara Perry was a successful owner-trainer who loved dogs, which is not unique in the world of greyhound racing. However, her level of devotion was recently revealed when her son Paul Perry notified the Greyhound Adoption Program that Barbara, who passed away last year, left a generous $45,430 bequest to GAP. The gift has been gratefully received by the GAP team who are considering the best way to use it to benefit greyhounds while commemorating Barbara’s generosity and devotion to the dogs. GAP manager, Larissa Darragh, said options include constructing an enrichment yard at GAP’s centre in Seymour to help prepare dogs for re-homing, building a test yard at a metropolitan racing club to make GAP more accessible to participants or a large trailer to transport the dogs to adoption days and GAP’s centre at Baxter. “From what Paul has told us about Barbara, I know that she would want us to do something that directly benefits greyhound welfare and their chance to have a good life when they finish racing. We feel honoured to have received this gift, and we would like to thank Barbara’s family for their support and kind wishes.” Paul says he has good memories of growing up with Barbara’s greyhounds. “Besides training and racing greyhounds she had many as family pets once their racing careers had come to an end. Greyhounds gave my mother, her partner and myself many great memories and we were fortunate enough to see what beautiful-natured animals they are,” he said.

By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare

The LR 42.6 amendments gave GRV an opportunity to trial a new form of education seminar during race meetings. The seminars started with a short 10-minute video presentation held between the end of kennelling and the commencement of the first race. The video was then left available to view, or playing on loop, for participants to drop in and catch up on anything they had missed. GRV staff were also available for four hours from the end of kennelling to answer questions and offer support, with factsheets and other supporting documents provided.

Barbara’s success as a trainer was no fluke either. She experimented with different training formulas before she discovered the right one to bring out the best in Tammy Shanta. Barbara and her husband Bill bought land in Longwarry in Gippsland to establish themselves as greyhound trainers, where they worked for 14 years before retiring. Bill sadly passed away in 2010. Barbara was diagnosed with brain cancer last year and spent the remaining three months of her life moving between hospital and a nursing home, but greyhounds were never far from her mind. In fact, one of her last outings was to the greyhound races in Warragul. Memories have faded since the 1970s but there are still people in the Warragul racing community who remember Barbara; now she will be remembered for her generous gift to GAP. Feedback from participants on the presentation style and format, and the supporting documents was positive. As such, GRV will now commence a series of these types of seminars at race meetings throughout the year. An upcoming seminar series will be held from mid-November to mid-December 2017 on ‘Hot weather, transport and emergency preparedness’. Dates and locations for the seminars will be published on FastTrack and at grv.org.au by the end of the first week of November. We would appreciate your input into the content of our seminar series for 2018. If you have any suggestions for topics please email Hugh Robinson at welfare@grv.org.au. GRV has also developed a new initiative to fully review all incidents that result in the death of a greyhound at a race meeting. The data collected as part of the review process will be collated and reported on to help improve track safety and animal welfare, and reduce the number of deaths of greyhounds at race meetings. Owners, trainers and handlers of deceased greyhounds, or witnesses to the incident, may be contacted by animal welfare staff to seek information on the incident or any other relevant information to support the review. GRV would like to thank those people who have been assisted us so far.

From 1 October 2017 new re-homing rules were implemented through changes to Local Rule (LR) 42.6. GRV attended one race meeting at every track during October to familiarise participants with the new rule and provide them with supporting documents and checklists, and to answer any questions. Club managers offered significant support in our endeavours, for which GRV is very grateful.

One newspaper report of the day referred to the greyhound as the “current pin-up girl with punters” as she was lining up to win her fifth consecutive race at Sandown Park. The article mentions the stayer’s devastating and brilliant form, but notes that punters were inclined to regard her earlier starts at Sandown as a fluke, but she proved them wrong when she came home from a seemingly hopeless position to take first place.

NOVEMBER 2017

WELFARE REPORT

Barbara raced and trained greyhounds in Melbourne and regional Victoria throughout the 70s and 80s. She found success with one dog in particular, her champion stayer Tammy Shanta who broke track records in the early 70s, won the 1975 Sandown Cup and was a Greyhound of the Year finalist in 1974. In all she clocked up 23 wins from 55 starts, 10 seconds and five thirds. She won nine at Olympic Park (732m) and nine at Sandown (718m).

Dundee Osprey, one of the most consistent – and brilliant – chasers this decade, has been retired. The 35kg son of Fabregas and Dundee Rose departs the track with $538,600 in prize money next to his name after winning a number of feature events, including the Group One Topgun, Harrison-Dawson and Sale Cup. “It’s been a really good ride with him for sure,” said his trainer Geoff Scott-Smith. “He’s my best mate. We kind of feed off each other. I’d take him to the track and it was like he was trying to win for me.” “I don’t really have a need for the money, I’m retired now and own my place. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice but it’s not what I do it for. It (training greyhounds) gives you a purpose, a reason to get out of bed each morning. Getting a dog into tip top condition to be the best they can be is very satisfying.” Dundee Osprey’s racing career began in unconventional fashion. His first race was in a coursing event at Lang Lang as an 18-month-old pup where he reached the semi-final of the Derby. Two months later he won on his race track debut in a

heat of the Vic Bred Maiden at Warrnambool, but despite the early success, he had given no indication of the success that lay ahead. “The whole litter chased straight away. Early on you knew he was a good chaser but at that stage you never thought he’d be a world beater,” Scott-Smith said. After a couple of impressive wins at Cranbourne, Dundee Osprey made headlines at his 14th start when he blitzed his rivals to win in a stunning 29.109 at Sandown Park, a time that even amazed the man who knew him best. Dundee Osprey contested an amazing 18 group finals throughout his decorated career and would finish with a 2110-10 record from 61 starts, including multiple wins over each distance. “It makes you really proud when people say how much they enjoy seeing him race. He was such a competitor, just loved being at the track and racing, I can’t remember a single race where he didn’t try his hardest. I’ll never have another one like him,” Geoff said. Dundee Osprey is standing with Scott-Smith for $1,500 a serve.

TRACK TO TEMPORARILY CLOSE FOR REPAIRS

22

By Luke Holmesby Geelong Greyhound Racing Club will temporarily close its track as repair work commences on the track’s lure system.

GRV’s Acting General Manager Racing, Scott Robins, said the decision to temporarily close the track was made with animal welfare front of mind.

After experiencing ongoing mechanical faults with the lure system and the catching pen gates, a decision was made to close the track immediately and transfer all remaining meetings in November 2017 to other Victorian tracks.

“Participant safety and greyhound safety is paramount and while we understand temporarily closing a track does cause inconvenience for some people, we will not potentially compromise the welfare of the greyhounds or people who make up our sport,” Mr Robins said.

The twilight meeting that was scheduled for Tuesday, 31 October was unable to be transferred due to short notice and was subsequently cancelled. The meeting scheduled for 3 November will now be held at the Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club.

GRV will now consider options for the Geelong track to become operable again as soon as possible and an announcement will be made in the coming weeks around this in consultation with the club.

Tiger Dusty wins at The Meadows just four days after Richmond won the 2017 AFL Grand Final. Below: Tiger Dusty with trainer Fred Malloy (sporting a Richmond cap), and Dane Swan’s headline-making tweet.

DANE SWAN'S TIGER DUSTY TWEET By Andrew Copley Greyhound racing had its own slice of Dustin Martin fever when Tiger Dusty won at The Meadows on 4 October, just four days after the AFL superstar added the Norm Smith Medal to his CV as part of Richmond’s historic grand final win. The greyhound’s victory prompted a tweet by Martin’s good mate, fellow Brownlow medallist Dane Swan, and also received national news coverage. “I can’t believe the coverage his win received. It made the news in Adelaide and in NSW. Dusty’s horse (Main Stage) won a few days later as well,” said trainer Fred Malloy of Heidelberg Heights. “I’ve been a Richmond member for 35 years, and my mum (Norma), who is 89, has been a member for 68 years.”

NOVEMBER 2017

Norma joined Malloy at The Meadows for Tiger Dusty’s win, his third from 26 starts. Fred trains one other greyhound, Tiger Girl, both of which were giveaways whom he walks through his local streets for four kilometres at 4:30am each day. Incidentally, Malloy was a handy footballer himself, playing in the 1970 Australian Army team which contained numerous VFL footballers including Rex Hunt, Barry Round and Kevin Sheedy.

On the back of a GRV investigation, Greyhounds Australasia has suspended the issuance of greyhound passports to the USA pending a six-month review beginning October 2017. The suspension follows the discovery of a former Victorian-trained, Queensland-owned greyhound which was exported to the USA and later on-sold to China. As part of Victoria’s reform agenda, GRV has recently introduced strengthened Rules regarding exporting and is continuing to strengthen its integrity capability, including investigating any Victorian owners/trainers that may be involved in the unauthorised exporting of greyhounds from Victoria.

However, GRV’s efforts to eliminate the inappropriate export of greyhounds are made harder by the fact that such exports are not illegal under Federal law. GRV has written to the Federal Minister asking for an amendment to the Commonwealth Export Control Act 1982.

DON'T WAIT APPLY FOR DNA TODAY! GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early.

GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season.

For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.

NOVEMBER 2017

For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.

Heats: 03/02/2018 Final: 10/02/2018

(520m - 1st prize - $47,000)

This will be greyhound racing’s second Gippsland Carnival, and will carry over $800,000 in prize money, incorporating Victoria’s four country cups in the Gippsland region. However, an adjustment to the racing calendar will see the carnival condensed to eight weeks (down from 16 weeks), making it more dynamic. The Gippsland Carnival will kick off with the 2017 Group 1 Sale Cup, to be run on Boxing Day, with the Warragul Cup (13 January), Traralgon Cup (January 27) and Cranbourne Cup (February 10) to complete the carnival. Bonus prize money will again be available for the best performing greyhounds, albeit under a new format that will no longer include separate streams for sprint and staying events. “Due to low nomination numbers in the first Gippsland Carnival for the staying events, outside of the Sale Cup, the risk of not getting enough nominations to conduct heats could have made the series unviable,” announced GRV’s Racing Manager, Scott Robins. “The points system has also been altered to offer higher points for heats, which should encourage increased participation across what we expect to be a tightly contested Carnival program.” The top three points scorers at the completion of the 2017/18 Gippsland Carnival will share in $20,000 bonus prize money, with the breakdown being $14,000 (1st), $4,000 (2nd) and $2,000 (3rd).

More details about the bonus prize money stream for the upcoming Gippsland Carnival will appear in the December edition of Greyhound Monthly.

By Molly Haines GRV’s Chief Grader Andrew Mills visited Victoria’s 13 tracks over the past month to provide insights into the current grading and selection processes, as well as listening to feedback from participants. Mills said issues raised and suggestions were similar at each club. “We found that there was confusion with Tier 3 versus Provincial selection procedures as well as the calculation method of a greyhound’s ranking,” Mills said.

Participants also raised concerns regarding higher graded dogs being put into Mixed 4/5 events. Mills says that the issues and suggestions are being discussed by key GRV staff. “We would like to thank the participants for their feedback. We are always looking at ways to improve our grading system to ensure all greyhounds are able to compete under fair and reasonable conditions.” Mills said the track visits were a success and he is hoping to travel to the tracks to discuss grading every six months to ensure knowledge ofthe grading system is up-to date.
