CEO’s Update
W
elcome to the last edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria for 2017. This issue covers the world’s richest and prestigious greyhound race, the Melbourne Cup and I congratulate Aston Dee Bee, his breeder/owner Ray Borda, and trainer Seona Thompson on the greyhound’s great run, as well as the team at Sandown Park for their hard work in making the night happen.
Another great moment of the night was, of course, Fanta Bale becoming only the third greyhound in the world to win $1 million in prizemoney, joining Fernando Bale and Dyna Double One as one of the sport’s all-time greats. Last month also saw the annual Ready 2 Race Sales at the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association, where buyers invested $322,600 in 74 greyhounds at an average price of $4,359 per dog, up on $4,284 in 2016, and you can read more about it in this issue. Also featured in November was GRV’s third Greyhound Community Day, held at The Meadows, which brought around 700 people and 300 greyhounds together to socialise and enjoy track tours, vet talks, dog washing, dental checks, live music and free kids’ activities. The Community Days have been a very well attended and praised initiative and you can look forward to more in 2018. GRV’s inaugural Chase for Charity 2017 also wrapped up in November after raising almost $40,000 for organisations including the Victorian Men’s Shed Association, Dogs for Kids with Disabilities and Ronald McDonald House Charities
To further encourage sustainable breeding, GRV is also waiving all registration fees for breeding females, applications to service and mating results from 15 November 2017 to 30 June 2018. During this period, GRV will also reimburse all Greyhounds Australasia DNA analysis fees and introduce an alternative pink card registration process for when a DNA analysis has been taken, but not yet received. This will give participants more flexibility and cut processing delays for breeding opportunities. In other industry news, I would also like to congratulate Tony Mestrov and Dayle Brown on their respective appointments as GRNSW’s Chief Executive Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Officer. Both Tony and Dayle are highly experienced and well regarded professional sports administrators and I look forward to working with them to keeping building the sport at the national level. Finally, as we enter summer, I’d like to remind all participants of GRV’s Hot Weather policy which you can read at grv.org.au/HotWeather. GRV will continue to provide alerts through Fasttrack, texts and social media whenever race meets and trials are affected, and I encourage you to contact GRV’s Members Services if you’re uncertain about any aspects of the policy. 2017 has been a very busy yet rewarding year for GRV and the sport which I believe is now in a strong position for sustainable, long-term growth. As the year ends, I hope you all have an enjoyable and safe festive season and I look forward to seeing you in 2018 for more great racing.

DECEMBER 2017
Turning now to industry development and growth, last month GRV implemented a new prizemoney and breeding support package, which was developed with considerable participant input. It includes more than $3 million in additional prizemoney to be shared between owners and trainers at the lower levels of racing while maintaining Metro Level 1 prizemoney at existing levels.
The package also includes up to $1.4 million for breeders and owners in the new VICGREYS breeding excellence program.

Fanta Bale By Jason Adams
T
he fabulous Fanta Bale eclipsed $1 million in prize money with an outstanding win in the Group 1 Bold Trease (715m) at Sandown Park on Melbourne Cup night (24 November). As expected Fanta Bale stepped well out of box 3 but was immediately challenged by interstate rivals Petunia Monelli and Champagne Sally. When the race was up for grabs Australia’s premier stayer Fanta Bale rose to the occasion asserting control down the back straight. She soon bounded clear and went on to win by 3¼ lengths from gallant rank outsider Packey Keeping in 41.98sec. “She was held up for a long way until she found a gap going down the back. I think the fact she was held up for so long gave her more gas in the tank. It just shows she can do it at both ends,” trainer Rob Britton told RSN927’s Andrew Kuuse and Simone Fisher.

GRV ambassador Brent Harvey witnessed Fanta Bale’s historic win.
The $100,000 first prize took her earnings tally to $1,094,170, joining Fernando Bale ($1,299,370) and Dyna Double One ($1,160,316) in the magical million dollar club. Although a massive achievement in itself, Britton says it’s the racing titles that he is most proud of. “With the million dollars it was more relief than anything else. Winning the Bold Trease, to me that’s the biggest thing. The fact that she’s been in seven group 1’s and won them all, that’s the achievement that will always live with me,” Britton said. Fanta Bale needs one more win at the highest level to equal Fernando Bale’s chest of eight career Group 1 wins. There are often murmurings surrounding how long Fanta Bale’s racing career will continue with an inevitable breeding career ahead of her. Fortunately for fans and the sport, there are no imminent plans of retirement.

ston Dee Bee secured his place in greyhound racing folklore after a brilliant victory in the $600,000 Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup last night.
The win was an emotional one for trainer Seona Thompson, who struggled to hold back her tears after the race. “I can’t believe it, I’m just really proud, proud of the dog, proud of the whole family who worked so hard just to get him to the track,” she said. “I’m so happy for Ray (Borda, owner), he was in dogs before I was born and this is his first Cup. My dad and step mother are here tonight, as I said it’s a big family effort, everyone helps. My sisters and everybody, I’m sure they’ll be bawling their eyes out wherever they are tonight.” “It’s not something I thought would ever happen to me, I never
Having won 10 of his previous 14 starts with those four placings being at group level, Aston Dee Bee’s win came as no surprise to many punters. He was sent to the boxes the $2.40 favourite after qualifying fastest with a brilliant heat win in 29.12, and was unbeaten in four starts from box 1 at Sandown Park. “I don’t think you can be too confident in a Melbourne Cup, but what he did is what I hoped he would do. I knew he could begin and that he could hold his spot. He’s racing so well, he’s a big strong dog he’s jumping out of his skin. When I get home tonight and watch the replay I’m sure it will start to sink in.” His breakthrough victory at group level – he had been placed in six of his previous eight attempts in group company – improved his record to 27 wins from 48 career starts and elevated his career prizemoney to $631,025. Borda said winning the Melbourne Cup was easily the biggest highlight of his 45 years in the sport, and he paid tribute to his star. “He ran second in the (Group 1) Adelaide Cup and second in the (Group 1) Topgun, so he deserved to finally win a group race,” the prominent South Australian breeder said.

Cheques have already been presented to Dogs for Kids with Disabilities and Ronald McDonald House Charities as part of a community partnership between GRV and Croc Media. GRV’s Chase for Charity began in April with Croc Media’s racing experts casting their weekend greyhound racing tips in the hope of raising money for the organisations. Croc Media’s panel of Dr Turf, Craig Hutchison and Liam Pickering, who were each allocated a charity, have come through and raised about $39,000 for their groups. Each week they placed $500 on Victoria greyhound races to benefit their charity. Liam Pickering finished ahead of the pack, proving to be the most accurate tipster. • Liam Pickering – $13,956.35 for the Victorian Men’s Shed Association • Dr Turf – $12,598 for Dogs for Kids with Disabilities • Craig Hutchison – $11,392.50 for Ronald McDonald House Charities

The popular Saturday morning radio program is broadcast to all parts of Australia including the rural and regional Victorian towns that host greyhound racing. Ric Blackburn, executive officer of the Victorian Men’s Shed Association, accepted the cheque this morning. He also met greyhound Pittsy Lomar which won $380 for his organisation, and the dog’s owner Nathan McMenmamin and daughter Aleisha. GRV’s General Manager, Strategic Communication and Marketing, Louise Martin, thanked the Off the Bench crew for their participation and congratulated the three organisations on their windfall. “GRV has developed partnerships with many organisations in the community and these three are very special to us. Through Chase for Charity we have met some dedicated people who work hard to support men’s health and the health and welfare of children, and they achieve a great deal with very limited resources. It has been a pleasure to work alongside them,” she said. GRV has formed a special relationship with Dogs for Kids with Disabilities which is training a dog from the Greyhound Adoption Program as a companion dog to assist a child. The greyhound Jake has passed with flying colours and is about to be placed with a family.

COMMUNITY DAY TICKED OFF THE LIST By Andrew Copley Former track star, Agent Jack has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, however his loving owners Helen Garvey and Bradley Thiele are going all out to ensure their beloved pet lives the rest of his life to the fullest. This includes attending the Greyhound Community Day at The Meadows on Sunday 12 November. “Agent Jack, or Tony as we call him, has spindle cell sarcoma, which is a form of cancer, and he doesn’t have long to live,” Helen said.
“As such, Bradley and I decided to create a bucket list of things for him to do, and going to the recent Community Day was one of them. We had a great day under the umbrellas and Tony even managed to get on the vibrating massage machine and also had a doggy beer.” Just five years of age, Agent Jack won 16 races from 42 starts and was a finalist in the 2014 Ballarat and Sale Cups. NUMBERS ADDING UP FOR A STRONG FINANCIAL FUTURE
G
RV’s recent annual report revealed a host of statistics pointing to Victorian greyhound racing hitting really important key performance indicators relating to animal welfare and integrity to ensure a strong, sustainable future. Among the many highlights of the report were: - A record 1314 greyhounds adopted out through GRV’s Greyhound Adoption Program - A 15 per cent reduction in track injuries thanks largely to new measures implemented to improve track safety. - 54 per cent reduction in euthanasia numbers. - A 56 per cent increase in swabbing. All of these achievements are the result of GRV’s reform agenda with an increased focus on resources for animal welfare and integrity to ensure the industry is effectively regulated. GRV has moved swiftly at a time when there was doubt about the future of NSW greyhound racing. And while that decision was ultimately reversed, there were strong expectations from the State Government and the community that significant change was needed. This agenda has meant a realignment of budgetary priorities. After having made a profit of $5.3m in 2015/16 (due to expenses being under budget) and having built liquid reserves to over $35m, GRV took every opportunity to reduce the Victorian greyhound industry's significant exposure and rolled over the under expenditure in 2015/16 to support an expenditure of an extra $5.9 million for the financial year in 2016/17.
The recently announced $3 million plus annual increase in stakemoney and breeding sustainability packages are just one example of this shift that will entice participants to increase their involvement and invite new owners and trainers to become involved. These increases were afforded by ongoing revenue increases and a reduction in average staffing costs. The national turnover on Victorian greyhound racing increased by 11.8 per cent in 2016/17 to a record $2.03 billion, meaning more money than ever is being injected into our industry. The financial loss for 16/17 also included significant investment in substantial track works at Horsham which was not initially budgeted for such a substantial makeover. It is also not by definition an asset of GRV but still classified as an expense. These unique circumstances meant that cost could only technically be considered a loss rather than an investment. With all this in mind, GRV’s projections for the 2017/18 and 2018/19 financial years are expecting the business to return to profit as it builds a sustainable industry for the long haul. GRV is forecast to continue to have a large cash balance in the bank at 30 June 18 (whilst still allowing major capital upgrades to FastTrack and other technologies and clubs infrastructure). Recent emphatic public support from the Victorian State Government is further proof that our industry has a robust future in this state. This strong profit position should see further growth in our liquidity and the potential for further investment in capital works and clubs infrastructure.
The impact of being well under budget in total expenses in 2015/16 exaggerated the total increase in expenses in 2016/17 which caused the $11.2m in turnaround. The profit made in 2015/16 was intended by the Board to be spent in 2016/17. As the major transformation reform agenda draws to a close in 2017/18 with GRV having addressed recommendations from the Chief Veterinary Office and the Office of Racing Integrity Commission, GRV is now in the process of transitioning to a lower cost base in FY18 and a much-improved financial result as it moves its focus from reform to ensuring a sustainable Victorian greyhound racing industry for many years to come.

GOOD WIN FIRST UP FOR MAGPIE By Andrew Copley

cott Good Pace, a greyhound owned by Collingwood footballer Steele Sidebottom, could be a star in the making based on his brilliant win on debut at Shepparton on 23 October by eight lengths. Sidebottom, the reigning Collingwood best & fairest winner, spoke to SEN's The Run Home about his new involvement into greyhound racing.

"He had a great win in his first run but he forgot to jump out of the boxes (on time) in his two runs since," Sidebottom told Darren Berry and David Schwartz.
Sidebottom said a number of his teammates have taken an interest in Scott Good Pace including Jarrod Blair, Adam Oxley, Josh Thomas, Jackson Ramsey and Levi Greenwood, with a number of those players joining Steele at last month's TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park. Scott Good Pace was bred by the Proven Syndicate, led by Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club Manager, Carl McGrath, who talked Sidebottom into buying the greyhound as a young pup at the 2016 Shepparton Cup. Rockoon, whom the Hellmuths rejected a six-figure offer for, produced a massive run to win the Hume Cup, making up 12 lengths on the leaders before winning by three.

“I always knew he would sire a good pup because he was such a hard chaser. We are standing him at stud for only $1,000 but no one wants to use him. Hopefully breeders will show some interest in him now,” Lisa said. Fellow Pearcedale greyhound Bewildering (Seona Thompson) won the Group 3 RSN Silver Bullet (525m) on the same night with a powerful win over Up Hill Jill and Aqua Cheetah in 29.75sec. As is tradition on thoroughbred racing’s Melbourne Cup eve at The Meadows, local families turned out in big numbers to enjoy loads of free entertainment including a wild animals enclosure showcasing the likes of crocodiles, snakes and koalas.

“He was last at one stage, and I thought he might be able to run a place but I didn’t really give him any chance of winning. I actually can’t believe how strong he is,” Lisa Hellmuth said.
The $75,000 to-the-winner Hume Cup was Rockoon’s ninth victory from 23 starts, as he defeated Where Art Thou and Riley Tokaam in 34.33sec. The win justified the Hellmuth’s faith in the stud prospects of Peter Rocket, who won the Group 1 Dapto Megastar (520m) and Group 2 Horsham Cup (480m) in 2013.

By Sandra Reed, GOTBA President
It is pleasing to witness the results of our efforts as many of the recommendations that we have been lobbying for over time become implemented. The most recent is allowing you to breed with your female dog provided DNA testing has been taken and you have filled out the appropriate waiver form, so you no longer need to have your DNA results to gain permission to mate your brood matron. This is a welcome change for people whose female dog comes into season unexpectedly and they decide to breed rather than continue racing. Of course, if you have a female dog you intend to breed with, it is always better to be prepared and do the test early. In the future there will be more participant input into the recommendations for changes in breeding and racing decisions through the establishment of the Breeding and Racing advisory committees. The GOTBA will have representation on both of these committees and we have been assured that the ICG will be informed of these recommendations for further discussion before any changes are implemented. I believe this can only be good for our sport as the more people we have working towards better outcomes, the more likely we are to ensure a sustainable future.

We have been involved once again this month with an invitation to spend another full day with DEDJTR at their Attwood offices to discuss the drafting of the changes to the proposed Code of Practice. It appears a final draft is not far away and we are encouraged by the input we have been asked to provide. Many participants are asking for an assurance that greyhound racing is guaranteed to continue into the future. This guarantee is impossible to obtain as Governments come and go with different people. So we can only work with what we have and at the present moment we have a great relationship with both of the major parties, who assure us that they are fully behind us and are very happy with the progress we have made in recent years. It’s important we keep up a good relationship with Government representatives and keep them informed about

the good work we do and also present them with evidence that greyhounds are happy racing and are better cared for than any other canine. Also they need to be informed of the value of greyhound racing to the community and the people involved in the sport. The Great Chase was just one of many examples of greyhound racing helping the community. With our commitment to animal welfare we are gaining much respect and the overall image of our sport continues to improve. We are all ambassadors of this industry and it is our responsibility to help outsiders understand that we put the welfare of our greyhounds first and give them the best possible life, where they are happy doing what is instinctively natural to the breed - running in groups and enjoying the thrill of the chase. GRV’s recently released 2016/17 Annual Report was a significant point of interest for the GOTBA. While GRV have large reserves in property and cash, all of us want a strong, sustainable greyhound racing industry for years to come. We have engaged in discussions with GRV and have been informed that in this past year it has been necessary to spend large amounts of money, especially on welfare and integrity, to achieve the results required for the future stability of our industry. Now that we have achieved these outcomes, GRV has assured us that this year there will be budget changes that should result in only a small loss and the following year we will be back in profit. The new increases in stake money and measures to ensure sustainable breeding have been introduced and will be a great help to those of us who continue to be involved in racing and breeding. Greyhound racing continues to grow in popularity and betting revenue is increasing. As long as this trend continues we will be requesting that stake money is topped up from these annual increases, so that participants are justly rewarded for their efforts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the GOTBA committee and the members who help us throughout the year. Next year we are planning to have member liaison officers at meetings to talk to you about the GOTBA and encourage you to become involved. I wish you all a happy Christmas and a successful new year.
The Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of member and their greyhounds.

About GOTBA
The AGM is usually held on Sunday evening late November each year. All members are encouraged to attend as a review of the year’s work will be presented and New Committee members are elected for the next year.
Annual General Meetings
Adoption
GOTBA encourages all owners to have a retirement plan in place before breeding a litter or purchasing a puppy. While we all hope our greyhounds have a long and successful career, sometimes things don’t quite work out and retirement happens sooner than desired. Much better to be prepared.
Today’s greyhounds are purpose bred for racing but anyone who has been involved in breeding and racing knows that greyhounds can make sensational family pets once they have completed the transition from kennel life. Most take to family life enthusiastically, especially if it involves the couch!
Greyhounds Are for Life
The chief aim of the Greyhound Owners Trainers and Breeders Association of Victoria (GOTBA) Inc. is to safeguard and promote the interests of its members on important industry matters, and to improve outcomes for participants and greyhounds alike.

Promoting the welfare of all greyhounds as well as improving participant education and skills is a major part of this aim.
In Victoria, we are very lucky to have several private adoption groups that will assist in finding homes for retired greyhounds, in addition to GAP. Please support these greyt groups! GRV owns and runs the very successful Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) which has kennel facilities at Seymour, Ballarat & Baxter. Visit the website www.gap.grv.org.au
Greyhound Safety Net (GSN) has been established for many years and is located in Melbourne’s South East. It has an excellent track record of successful re-homing and adoption. Visit the website www.greyhoundsafetynet.org

These Meetings occur monthly, usually on the second Sunday, so there can be a delay between paying the fee and receiving confirmation of membership. Once Membership is approved, a Member Card will be mailed out that has your name and membership renewal date printed on a label. When you renew your membership, an updated label will be posted out to stick over the old one.
From time to time the GRV Integrity department releases important information in relation to new policies, guidelines and any other ‘Steward’ related matters. This information can be found on the FastTrack website under the ‘Stewards’ tab and then selecting the ‘General Alerts’ page.
Gippsland Greyhounds is located in East Gippsland and whilst only young, also have a great track record with finding homes for retirees. Visit the website www.gippslandgreyhounds.com
The GOTBA has a proud history of representing the interests of it’s member owners, trainers and breeders. Much of the work done is behind the scenes without a lot of fanfare and requires consulting with GRV and various Government Departments such as Planning and Agriculture, amongst others. Many great racing people have donated their time and energy to work for GOTBA and it’s members over the years. It is because of their effort and passion for the sport and it’s people that the GOTBA is widely recognised and respected as a vitally important Industry Stakeholder. A strong GOTBA is vital in keeping GRV accountable and must remain so to maintain a healthy Victorian greyhound industry. It is vitally important for all Owners, Trainers and Breeders to become members and add their voice to the GOTBA.
Contact them for assistance, information or to volunteer. The private groups are always looking for temporary or emergency housing, especially for greyhounds recovering from de-sexing surgery so anyone with a spare kennel for a couple of weeks who could donate the kennel & time to look after a recovering retiree would be welcomed.

The Geelong Greyhound Racing Club will re-open for racing on Friday, 1 December to trial an interim Finish-on-Lure (FOL) system until Greyhound Racing Victoria has installed a new catching pen.
DECEMBER 2017
RACING TO RETURN TO GEELONG IN DECEMBER All official GRV race meetings programmed for Geelong Greyhound Racing Club (GGRC) will be conducted on the Finish-on-Lure system during the trial, which is expected to run for at least three months. Racing will only be conducted on the outside track during this trial period. Manager of the GGRC David Hoey said the club’s committee would work with GRV to ensure the meetings were conducted in a safe and effective manner. Mr Hoey said this was an interim solution and the decision was based on feedback from participants, who much like the club, were eager to resume racing at Geelong. “Everyone wants the track up and running again with no compromise to animal welfare standards. Our committee met to discuss this, and we are working closely with GRV, which fully supports our decision,” Mr Hoey said. The FOL system has been used in Victoria in the past and is currently used in other parts of Australia and throughout New Zealand. “This interim measure puts the safety of the dogs first while considering racing participants and enthusiasts who are eager to get back to racing on the Geelong track as quickly as possible,” Mr Hoey said. “I know that there are participants and greyhounds who prefer the current lure system that is widely used in Victoria, but there are also participants who will be excited by the prospect of the FOL being available. If you have concerns that your greyhound may not suit the FOL system, then I strongly suggest that you avoid nominating to race at Geelong during the trial.”

The Jessica Sharp-trained Crook Me Kindly, who is owned by a group of nine former school mates from Catholic College in Wodonga, snared the $25,000 first prize on 4 November ahead of Peter Yap. After running a successful punters club throughout 2015 and 2016, the group from Wodonga decided to put their earnings together and, upon following advice from a family friend, Nathalia greyhound trainer Michael Ellis, headed to the auction. “We were initially going to spend our winnings on a trip away together, but then we decided to do something more meaningful with our money. We considered a horse but quickly decided a greyhound would be a better option,” said Jordan Thorneycroft,
Manager of the Peckerheads Syndicate, which owns Crook Me Kindly. “Michael told us that before purchasing a greyhound to race we needed to have a plan in place for the dog’s life after racing, and my mother offered to keep our dog as a pet once its racing career is over.” Peter Yap, trained by Ray Henness for Essendon’s Con Dimopoulos, followed up five nights after the Northern Districts Cup with victory in the $12,000 to-the-winner Ready 2 Race Championship (515m) at Sandown Park. Both Crook Me Kindly and Peter Yap have proven to be bargain buys, being purchased for $3,500 and $4,100 respectively and combining to win more than $50,000 in prize money. The Northern Districts Cup is open to greyhounds who have competed at least twice previously at Shepparton, who haven’t won in the city and have won no more than $20,000 in prize money.

TWO TOP $20K AT 2017 SALES By Andrew Copley

reyhound Racing Victoria’s Ready 2 Race Sales took place at Bendigo on 18 November, with purchasers turning out in their hundreds in search for their next racetrack star.
Greyhounds competed in heats with up to three other competitors then again five days later, this time in a six-dog field before the auction. The top selling greyhounds on the day were All Bling (Lot 16) and Johnny Wishbone (Lot 133), who were purchased for $20,900 and $20,500 respectively. Experienced participant David Torr, who purchased All Bling, said it was a credit to Victorian greyhound racing and the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association that the event has been a success since it began in 2012.
Johnny Wishbone wins his Ready 2 Race Final, and below, All Bling with Jennifer Torr, wife of purchaser David Torr. Pictures by Clint Anderson.
“I’m a big advocate of the Ready 2 Race concept because you can buy a dog that you can see go around and run reasonable time, and in many cases it is racing in a couple of weeks,” said Torr, who is a publican at the Railway Hotel in Eaglehawk. “I’ve bought a number of dogs from the R2R Sales over years including Turbine, who I paid about $26,000 for and won a maiden series with so I got my money back. I’ve bought two or three greyhounds nominated by Paul Bartolo, and last year I bought Zelemar Roo, who I’ve had 12 months of good racing with and he has won at Sandown and The Meadows for me.” Buyers invested $322,600 on the day, purchasing 74 greyhounds at an average price of $4,359 per dog, up on the average sale price of $4,284 in 2016. Twelve greyhounds were passed in on the day and were returned to connections.

The thing we liked about him was that he has proven form over 500m with a couple of wins at Bendigo over that distance. We did our homework on the breeding side of things as well and there are a lot of city winners in his bloodline and some of his littermates look pretty handy types as well.”

PURCHASER David Torr said: “He ran home fairly hard behind Shady Tex in his final today and I think if the race was much further he may have caught him. He did the same in his heat when running second again in fast time but making up ground late. From what I’ve seen My Bro Fabio puts strength into his pups and the Westerlo line is also very strong. With the Westerlos based on the other side of Melbourne I doubt whether All Bling would have been to Bendigo prior to the Ready 2 Race series. Some of the greyhounds for sale today would have been to Bendigo a lot, and some would even have been educated there, so there isn’t necessarily the same amount of improvement left in those dogs. How much experience a greyhound has had at Bendigo is one of the things I look for.”

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October 2016 to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well: • Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au • All sessions for December 2017 to February 2018 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. • To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: • have a current C5 vaccination; and • not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“winddown period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing. • Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. • Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. CROWDS TURN UP FOR A GREAT GREYHOUND COMMUNITY DAY By Suzanne McKenzie Almost 700 people and 300 dogs walked through the gates at The Meadows to take part in our third Greyhound Community Day on Sunday, 12 November. They enjoyed a day of sunshine, entertainment and free activities. Free dog washes, seminars about greyhound health, free dental checks and an insider’s tour around The Meadows facility were popular, along with a free barbecue and stalls stocking dog coats, snacks and toys. Organisers said this was the biggest Community Day to date, drawing people from all over Melbourne and from regional Victoria including Ballarat and Geelong. Eight GAP dogs travelled from Seymour for the event, seven of which found new homes. Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) Chairman, Bernie Carolan, and CEO, Alan Clayton welcomed guests and thanked those who had given a greyhound a new home. Mr Carolan spoke about GRV’s “whole of life cycle” approach to ensure that racing greyhounds are cared for before, during and after racing. He said the successful re-homing rates demonstrated that “racing and welfare outcomes can co-exist. You are helping us achieve these outcomes,” Mr Carolan said.
“We have volunteers here today and they do so much work week in week out, and I want to say thank you to our foster carers who look after greyhounds before they are adopted dogs to help them get used to a household environment, things like stairs and everyday household noises.” Their efforts contributed to an improved rate of adoption, Mr Clayton said. A total of 2693 greyhounds found their forever homes in the last financial year through GAP, third-party organisations and participants, with 1314 dogs adopted out through GAP. Mr Clayton spoke of his experience of re-homing five rescue kelpies and then Zoe the greyhound this year: “As others have discovered, greyhounds provide terrific companionship and they take over the house. Zoe is a terrific part of my life.”
Mr Clayton told guests he was delighted with the way the Victorian community had embraced the greyhound. He expressed his appreciation to GAP’s volunteers and foster carers, racing participants and other third-party greyhound re-homing organisations such as Gippsland Greys and Greyhound Safety Net and the RSPCA, for their efforts in rehoming dogs.

DON'T WAIT APPLY FOR DNA TODAY! GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early.
GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season.
For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.
DECEMBER 2017
For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.

GRAND MOMENT FOR NEW OWNERS
By Andrew Copley
Twenty new greyhound owners from the Grand Hotel in Mornington had their first winner on 15 November when Staunch As won a maiden race at Cranbourne. “All 20 people frequent the Mornington Hotel and we put in $30 every week for about 12 months. Even the publican (Cameron Price) is in with us,” said Staunch As’ trainer, Kevin Richards. “We bought four pups out of the money, three of which are racing and the other one didn’t make it to the track but has been placed in the Greyhound Adoption Program.”

Victorian greyhound racing’s new prize money increase saw an extra $46,676 go into the pockets of participants in the first week of operation (15-21 November). The increases apply to 21 of Victoria’s 23 weekly race meetings (excluding the state’s two full stakes metropolitan meetings), and in the first week 199 of the 248 races (75 per cent) across those 21 race meetings received increases. The average increase across the 21 race meetings was $2,222 or, to break it down further, $234 per race. WELFARE REPORT By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news
Behavioural certificates
32
The amended Local Rule 42.6 in effect now requires that an owner makes reasonable efforts to re-home their fit and healthy greyhound, including a wind-down period prior to re-homing efforts. Where a greyhound is medically or behaviourally unsuitable for re-homing, the owner is exempt from certain re-homing efforts if they supply a veterinary certificate that certifies this. While a medical condition is usually straightforward for a veterinarian to certify, your veterinarian may not be able to certify a behavioural issue if they do not witness the particular behaviour firsthand. If you require a veterinary certificate to support a behavioural exemption, please contact your veterinarian in advance to explain your situation, and they will advise what they will require from you in terms of evidence. From GRV’s perspective, the veterinary certificate for a behavioural exemption will only be accepted if the veterinarian actually certifies that the greyhound is unsuitable for re-homing due to a significant behavioural issue. Hot Weather The second seminar series commenced in early November and will continue into mid-December. The topic is “Hot weather, transportation of greyhounds and emergency preparedness”. The seminar presents important information to participants on GRV’s Hot Weather Policy, Transport Policy and how it applies to hot weather affected journeys, and preparing for emergencies. Greyhounds have an optimal internal temperature of 38°C- 39.5°C. According to scientific literature, the normal air temperature of a greyhound’s environment should be between 23°C - 30°C to maintain this range without the greyhound having to use excess energy. This air temperature range is known as the “thermoneutral zone”. Air temperatures outside this zone require dogs to use more energy to maintain their internal body temperature. The critical temperature zone for greyhounds is the range in which greyhounds can still maintain their internal body temperature, and is estimated at between 10°C and 35°C (National Research Council, 2006). It is therefore vital to maintain the internal temperature of greyhound kennel buildings and transport vehicles within the critical temperature zone, but ideally within the thermoneutral zone whenever possible. This is
particularly important on race days when excess energy expenditure can impact on race performance. GRV has implemented Hot Weather and Transportation policies regarding the management of transport, race meetings and trials where the air temperature rises to 32°C or above. For more information visit greyhoundcare. grv.org.au/policies-and-guidance. In addition, coming into the summer season means the risk of bushfire in Victoria is high. All government agencies work hard to protect Victorians from the impacts of bushfire and other natural disasters. It is important that all Victorians have an emergency plan for their family and property, including evacuation options for people and animals where possible. GRV encourages all participants to prepare an emergency plan that covers the major disasters which have the potential to impact on your family, including your greyhounds. Discuss your plan, record it, and practice it with your family or housemates. Place your plan somewhere prominent - on the fridge or by the front door. Refer to cfa.vic.gov.au for guidance on developing a bushfire survival plan. The safest option for people and animals in bushfire prone areas is to leave early on high fire risk days. On a Code Red bushfire day, leave the night before or early in the morning. Late evacuation can be a deadly option. In the event of an emergency, you may have to leave your property at very short notice. An emergency kit will ensure you have everything needed to care for your greyhounds. • Emergency kits should be located somewhere that will be easily accessible in case you need to evacuate quickly, and should include: • Food and water containers. Include enough food and water for at least three days. • Leads, muzzles, and travel crates. • An information list including your name, address and phone numbers. • Greyhound first aid items and essential medications. • Greyhound medical history, vaccination certificate and veterinary contacts. • Blankets, towels and bedding.
GIPPSLAND SET FOR DYNAMIC CARNIVAL Greyhound Racing Victoria is excited to announce the upcoming 2017/18 Gippsland Carnival, to be run throughout the summer period.
SALE CUP
(650m - 1st prize - $75,000)
This will be greyhound racing’s second Gippsland Carnival, and will carry over $800,000 in prize money, incorporating Victoria’s four country cups in the Gippsland region. However, an adjustment to the racing calendar will see the carnival condensed to eight weeks (down from 16 weeks), making it even more dynamic.

Heats: 17/12/2017 Finals: 26/12/2017
(440m - 1st prize - $15,000)
The Gippsland Carnival will kick off with the 2017 Group 1 Sale Cup, to be run on Boxing Day, with the Warragul Cup (13 January), Traralgon Cup (27 January) and Cranbourne Cup (10 February) to complete the carnival.

"The points system has also been altered to offer higher points for heats, which should encourage increased participation across what we expect to be a tightly contested Carnival program," Said Acting Racing General Manager, Scott Robins.
