CEO’s Update

W

elcome to the start of a new year for greyhound racing in Victoria. 2017 was a very busy year as we near the end of the transformation of greyhound racing and its regulatory arrangements.

I thank the participants, clubs and all other stakeholders for their work and commitment through what has been a long and often complex process. We have made very good progress in delivering on GRV’s strategic priorities of animal welfare and integrity and I think there’s little doubt we are now an Australian and international leader in these areas. In 2018, GRV’s focus will be on consolidating the reform work to date, returning to profit and moving to a new version of business as usual. However it will not mean a return to pre2015 processes and practices. An independent company, Capability Management was engaged to undertake an environmental scan to assist the GRV Board in refreshing its strategic priorities and we plan to release these refreshed priorities for consultation early this year. Industry growth remains one of GRV’s strategic priorities and this includes strengthening industry confidence. Here GRV is heartened to see that there has been an upswing in breeding numbers since the introduction of the increases in prize money, the waiving of fees and the introduction of a breeding sustainability package. Inseminations have increased almost 50 per cent at both our Sandown and McIvor clinics since November 2016 while litters whelped in Victoria have also increased, albeit at a lower rate over the same period.

We will also continue with our infrastructure program which includes a major upgrade of the Geelong track, which reopened last month. Since then Finish on Lure (FOL) races have been trialled at the club with the support of an expert FOL Driver from New Zealand. And if anyone you know is looking to bring a retired greyhound into their life, a reminder that GRV’s Greyhound Adoption Program is holding a special three-day adoption program at its Seymour headquarters from 12-14 January and you can find out more at gap.grv.org.au. Turning now to the track, I congratulate Aston Dee Bee on a great win in the Group 2 Energis Ballarat Cup on 9 December, one that continues a very impressive performance that has seen 29 wins from 50 starts. And the day before, the 2nd annual Gippsland Carnival, Australia’s biggest greyhound racing regional series, was launched at the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club with local business leaders, politicians and high-profile sports stars among the 200 people there. The carnival kicked off with the Sale Cup on Boxing Day and almost 3000 people watched WA star Quick Jagger win the Group 1 TRFM Sale Cup. The Gippsland Carnival continues to Warragul and Traralgon before concluding at Cranbourne. Last year’s carnival was most successful, and I am sure that once again it will be a fantastic start to another year of great racing around Victoria.

GRV is seeking public comment on its draft Penalty Guidelines which were released on 15 December. These guidelines propose penalties for greyhound welfare offences that are more in line with community expectations while allowing for discretion for incidents that are not as serious. You can find out more and make a submission at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ policies-and-guidance

An exciting new development for 2018 is the new Victorian Greyhound Racing Clubs Association that will give the clubs a stronger and more unified say on the sport’s future. GRV strongly supports this new initiative and has provided seed funding and support to help the Association in its strategic planning. On a related note, GRV is also now working more closely with our interstate counterparts to develop a strong national approach to animal welfare and integrity issues.

SPORTS STARS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS COME TOGETHER FOR GIPPSLAND CARNIVAL LAUNCH by Luke Holmesby

A

ustralia’s biggest greyhound racing regional series was launched with a bang at the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club on 7 December.

Local business leaders, politicians and high-profile sports stars were among a crowd of more than 200 for the launch of the second annual Gippsland Carnival which connects four country Cups in Sale, Traralgon, Warragul and Cranbourne. Victorian greyhound racing ambassador and AFL games record holder Brent Harvey was on hand, as was Western Bulldogs premiership player and Gippsland native Josh Dunkley and his sister, Melbourne Vixens netballer Lara Dunkley.

Ken Height with son Matt Height

MC and former AFL Star Richard Champion

State Shadow Minister for Racing and Gippsland East MP Tim Bull was in attendance as was the member for Gippsland South Danny O’Brien. Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Chairman Bernie Carolan said the Victorian State Government had been a strong backer of Victorian greyhound racing, particularly in the Gippsland region. “In the last six months alone GRV and the government have committed almost $450,000 to racing and community initiatives in Gippsland and Cranbourne through the Victorian Racing Industry Fund, and the Gippsland Carnival is a major part of that investment,” Mr Carolan said.

Gippsland Carnival Launch panel made up of Gary Howe, Lara and Josh Dunkley, GRV Racing Ambassador Brent Harvey and Sky Racing’s James Van de Maat.

“This is a terrific concept that connects four clubs for one exciting series,” Mr Carolan said. Mr Carolan said Gippsland was greyhound racing heartland, adding that the industry had a significant presence in the region.

ASTON DEE BEE DOMINATES BALLARAT CUP By Gerard Guthrie and Molly Haines

elbourne Cup hero Aston Dee Bee claimed back-toback feature race victories with a dominant display in the Group 2 Energis Ballarat Cup (450m) on Saturday 9 December.

6

Aston Dee Bee jumped well off the inside and was running second to reserve Chardy ($26.80) early, before railing to the lead turning for home and dashing clear as he defeated Chardy by two lengths in 25.07sec, with 2016 Melbourne Cup victor Ando’s Mac finishing third. “He is a pretty special boy and box one suits him pretty well,” said a delighted Seona Thompson.

After securing an overdue Group title when winning the world’s richest race on November 24, Aston Dee Bee, a superbly bred April ’15 son of Barcia Bale and Aston Elle, trained by Seona Thompson and raced by breeder Ray Borda, targeted the Ballarat Cup.

“Winning a Ballarat Cup is pretty special to me, because I’m a born and bred Ballarat girl. Dad used to run the Ballarat Club and my grandparents worked at the club during the time. It was a family run club and it is always special coming home to race.”

Aston Dee Bee was the fastest qualifier for the $47,000 to-the-winner Cup, courtesy of a 25.27sec heat success, and after drawing box one, as was the case in his memorable Melbourne Cup triumph, he started $1.90 favourite.

Aston Dee Bee’s litter sister Aston Miley, trained by Eddie Lieshout, started $2 favourite from box two in the $9,800 to-the-winner Ballarat Cup Consolation, but could only finish third to Brett Bravo’s Hone In ($8.20), which clocked 25.14sec.

Seona Thompson had a very strong hand, with Aston Dee Bee supported by second elect Bewildering ($4.10) and Big Flood ($14.90).

ASTON BREEDING 'DEE-LIGHT' By Gerard Guthrie

W

ith the magnitude of Aston Dee Bee’s Melbourne Cup triumph still sinking in, owner/breeder Ray Borda admits he gave up keeping count of how costly his greyhound racing dreams had proven to be decades ago.

Persistence and a determination to breed with and buy the best saw Aston Dee Bee’s owner and breeder Ray Borda reap the ultimate reward in the world’s richest race, the Melbourne Cup. South Australian businessman Borda took the first fateful step when he purchased four regally related pups by champion sire Bombastic Shiraz out of Elite Oriental, a Group 1-winning litter sister to 2008 National Sprint Champion Knocka Norris. Elite Oriental’s first litter, whelped in December 2008, was headlined by 2010 Melbourne Cup finalist Aston Galilee, the winner of 21 from 33, and Aston Elle, a Golden Easter Egg finalist, Sapphire Crown placegetter and now renowned as the mother of Aston Dee Bee. “Aston Dee Bee is one of the best bred dogs in Australia,” Borda said. “The honest truth is that when you match a sire you don’t know what the mixture will produce, but if breeding doesn’t count for anything then we’re all in big trouble! You have to say that breeding does count.

“When it comes to breeding, you look for good families, rather than good individuals." But if you can find a good individual out of a good family, that’s the number one thing you look for and this line has been producing good dogs for a very long time.” Aston Elle’s first two litters were to Magic Sprite and Collision, with Borda wisely selecting sire-of-the-moment Barcia Bale for her third mating. The rest is now Melbourne Cup history. “Aston Elle was a bit standoffish and I wasn’t sure if she would throw that into her pups,” Borda explained. “She did throw it on in her first two litters, so I picked Barcia Bale for her third litter because I knew he was a dog that was full of himself and I was hoping he would pass that bravado onto the pups. “Aston Dee Bee was always going to be a good dog. He was the biggest in the litter, he looked the best and broke in the best. If he was human he would be a six foot six, 100 kilogram athlete. I also own racehorses and a good, big animal is always going to beat a good, little animal.

Aston Dee Bee crossing the line in his Melbourne Cup victory

“If you look at his record, early in his career he almost showed too much and the Thompsons put him in the best races, which was okay, but in his first ten starts he never drew inside box four. In his last ten starts he’s kept drawing inside, which has really helped. Box one in the Melbourne Cup is what you dream of.” Aston Elle passed away last year, with her final litter of two to Bella Infrared about to hit the breakers. However, Borda will have no shortage of future breeding options, notably with three of Aston Dee Bee’s litter sisters; Melbourne Cup finalist and Geelong Cup placegetter Aston Miley, Maturity finalist Aston Dinnigan and Aston Selena. “Aston Miley only broke in one length slower than Aston Dee Bee, but in her first start at Sandown she broke her toe in five places and had to have the toe taken off. “I thought that was the end of her career, but Eddie (Lieshout) had never had a dog as good as her and he asked me if he could try to nurse her back. She’s going very well and was unlucky not to make the Ballarat Cup Final too. While a lucrative stud career beckons, Borda isn’t contemplating a premature retirement, with his sights firmly set on two of Australia’s other great races early in 2018 – the Australian Cup and Golden Easter Egg. “He’s my best dog, so you want it to continue as long as possible,” Borda offered. “He could be the next greyhound to earn a million dollars!”

About GOTBA

The AGM is usually held on Sunday evening late November each year. All members are encouraged to attend as a review of the year’s work will be presented and New Committee members are elected for the next year.

Annual General Meetings

Adoption

GOTBA encourages all owners to have a retirement plan in place before breeding a litter or purchasing a puppy. While we all hope our greyhounds have a long and successful career, sometimes things don’t quite work out and retirement happens sooner than desired. Much better to be prepared.

Today’s greyhounds are purpose bred for racing but anyone who has been involved in breeding and racing knows that greyhounds can make sensational family pets once they have completed the transition from kennel life. Most take to family life enthusiastically, especially if it involves the couch!

Greyhounds Are for Life

The chief aim of the Greyhound Owners Trainers and Breeders Association of Victoria (GOTBA) Inc. is to safeguard and promote the interests of its members on important industry matters, and to improve outcomes for participants and greyhounds alike.

Fanta Bale—winner of The G1 Sky Racing Australia Cup 2017 Photograph courtesy of BlueStream Pictures

Promoting the welfare of all greyhounds as well as improving participant education and skills is a major part of this aim.

In Victoria, we are very lucky to have several private adoption groups that will assist in finding homes for retired greyhounds, in addition to GAP. Please support these greyt groups! GRV owns and runs the very successful Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) which has kennel facilities at Seymour, Ballarat & Baxter. Visit the website www.gap.grv.org.au

Gippsland Greyhounds is located in East Gippsland and whilst only young, also have a great track record with finding homes for retirees. Visit the website www.gippslandgreyhounds.com

Greyhound Safety Net (GSN) has been established for many years and is located in Melbourne’s South East. It has an excellent track record of successful re-homing and adoption. Visit the website www.greyhoundsafetynet.org

A strong GOTBA is vital in keeping GRV accountable and must remain so to maintain a healthy Victorian greyhound industry. It is vitally important for all Owners, Trainers and Breeders to become members and add their voice to the GOTBA.

Contact them for assistance, information or to volunteer. The private groups are always looking for temporary or emergency housing, especially for greyhounds recovering from de-sexing surgery so anyone with a spare kennel for a couple of weeks who could donate the kennel & time to look after a recovering retiree would be welcomed.

The GOTBA has a proud history of representing the interests of it’s member owners, trainers and breeders. Much of the work done is behind the scenes without a lot of fanfare and requires consulting with GRV and various Government Departments such as Planning and Agriculture, amongst others. Many great racing people have donated their time and energy to work for GOTBA and it’s members over the years. It is because of their effort and passion for the sport and it’s people that the GOTBA is widely recognised and respected as a vitally important Industry Stakeholder.

Getting in touch with Committee Members to ask for help or offer feedback, assistance or ideas is easy: • Send an email to gotbav@gmail.com • Send a letter to PO Box 831 Pakenham 3810 • Ring 0423 357 620 to leave a message requesting a call back

Q & A WITH THE ICG’S BRIAN JONES By Andrew Copley Q. Tell us a bit about yourself I live in Lara and I’m married to Linda and have an and adult son, Darren. I have had my own business for the past 26 years, providing on road field services, Australia wide, to the legal profession. I am heavily involved in Geelong cricket and am currently Secretary of the Umpires Association. Q. How and when did you get involved in greyhound racing? My first winner as an owner was Black Neveelk in 1976 at the old grass Warrnambool track. Back then I couldn't afford to be involved in thoroughbreds so greyhounds became the next option. Q. What experience do you have in the sport? Like most hobbyists I have done pretty much everything including breeding, training, breaking, been a Geelong GRC Director, ICG Member and a long term GRV Ear Brander. Q. Best dogs you’ve been associated with? We haven't bred many litters, but our best litter won a few races at Olympic Park in the old days. It is difficult when you only have one or two dogs in work but we trained Riverboat Sam (won six night races at Sandown) and Judge Galore, who won about 20 races. Q. Biggest thrill/s in greyhound racing? We always get pleasure out of winning a race with a dog that has already been tried and rejected elsewhere. Q. Your thoughts on greyhound racing in Victoria? GRV have got some things right, but also got some things not quite right. The industry still survives, so we should be thankful for that. Victoria is easily the best state to race in with great rewards for participants, but I will say that the abundance of new rules/regulations has become very tiresome for most participants. I think it is time we all take a step back, take a deep breath and revisit exactly where greyhound racing is heading. Q. When and why did you join the ICG? I felt that after 40 odd years in greyhounds, and having done most

twilight

Q. How have you found your experiences on the ICG so far? I got told by many people that it would be a waste of time, but I must say that I have been pleasantly surprised at how much GRV do listen to the ICG. There are protocols involved, and plenty of documents to read, but it is far from a waste of time.

VICTORIAN 2017 Greyhound Racing Last year was one of the busiest and most eventful for the sport in Victoria in many decades. New racing carnivals, another million-dollar dog, great racing delivered by the 13 clubs and a renewed focus on coursing.

2017 also saw community and adoption days bringing together greyhound lovers across the State, a new family fun program, a record number of retired racers finding their forever homes and the video series Greyhounds are My Life profiling the people of Victoria’s greyhound racing community.

Off the track, the reform journey continued, positioning the sport for a thriving and sustainable future with major infrastructure works, revised rules to improve animal welfare and integrity and a new strategic approach for the clubs working together to promote the sport.

WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU… By Phil Weir

T

here’s an old cliché about dogs being only as good as their owners; if that’s true we had the best of both gathered on Sunday December 10.

More than 100 GAP volunteers brought their four-legged mates to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne so GRV could say “thank you”. In its 21st year, the GAP program broke all records for adoptions, notching up 1314 in 2016-2017 as well as 515 greyhounds fostered, and it simply couldn’t have been done without the generous dedication from GAP volunteers. Many travel long distances and give up their own time just to show off their greyhounds and talk to people; at regional shows, expos, adoption days, race meetings and wherever they are invited.

After so many, Debbie has seen all personalities. “They do have their individual character traits, but they are all beautiful.”

“I still cry every time we say goodbye to a dog, but I know they’re going off to a new exciting part of their lives.” Fostering and volunteering represent vital periods in the life of a greyhound; being prepared, and then spending their days being adored. GRV is fortunate have so many dedicated people. To you all: Thank you.

Likewise, our devoted army of fosterers were recognised for their vital – and often emotional – roles in the socialisation of greyhounds; setting them up for life as a pet. GRV CEO Alan Clayton thanked the supporters and made it clear; “we couldn’t do it without you”. Recognition also for those who had gone over and above expectation, like Mike and Debbie Payne; who were surprised with a plaque acknowledging their 100th greyhound foster. According to Debbie, “Fostering is just so rewarding. We get so much out of caring for these beautiful dogs, even if it is only for a short time.” The Paynes met their first greyhound, seven-year-old Arnie, when their original choice – an Irish Wolfhound – wasn’t available. “Since then we’ve loved every one of them; we’re picking up number 100 this weekend.”

GREYHOUND FIRST AID TRAINING SEMINAR By Gavin Goble

G

RV are excited to announce the introduction of a new program entitled Greyhound First Aid Training - Recognising Illness and Injury early in 2018.

Locations and dates for the on-track seminar series will be published on the Care and Standards Webpage in the new year.

The program will commence with a short on-track seminar in February introducing key information about recognising illness and injury in greyhounds and offering first aid. This will be followed by a series of free ½ -1 day workshops, commencing in the second half of year, where participants can learn more about: • the signs and symptoms of common greyhound illnesses and injuries, • how best to offer first aid, and • when to seek veterinary attention. If successful, GRV will look to expanding on the program to offer new workshops on illness, injury and first aid over the coming years. The aim is to build a comprehensive program to support all participants in (1) recognising illness and injury in greyhounds and (2) offering appropriate first aid and/or seeking veterinary treatment.

GEOFF DAWSON NAMED SANDOWN INAUGURAL PATRON By Mick Floyd

Geoff Dawson thanks the 2017 Melbourne Cup crowd

“In my time on the Board I’ve had the pleasure of working with many people with a deep love of greyhounds and greyhound racing, and I’m proud to call many of them my friends,” Geoff Dawson said. Mr Dawson joined the SGRC Board in 1979 and became Chairman in 1987. During Mr Dawson’s chairmanship, a number of major developments and initiatives have been implemented including the opening of Greyhound Entertainment, the construction of the kennel block, rebuild of the track and redevelopment of the Henry Harrison Grandstand.

Deputy Chairman Neil Brown has been announced as Mr Dawson’s replacement as the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club Chairman.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

In addition to continued improvement in infrastructure at the track, Mr Dawson has overseen the development of Sandown’s racing calendar which now features some of the sport’s most exciting and innovative racing events, including the Launching Pad, the Speed Star, and the world’s richest greyhound race, the TAB Melbourne Cup.

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October 2016 to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well: • Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au • All sessions for January to March 2018 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. • To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: • have a current C5 vaccination; and • not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“winddown period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing. • Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. • Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP.

CROWDS TURN UP FOR A GREAT GREYHOUND ADOPTION DAY By Suzanne McKenzie

A

Narre Warren family has opened their doors to not one but two pet greyhounds following GAP’s final Adoption Day of the year, 3 December, that saw all 32 greyhounds go to new homes.

Ailsa and James Atkins and children Madelyn, Jack and Vanessa had two extra passengers in their car on the drive home on following the 3 December Geelong Greyhound Adoption Day, with Moo Moo and Timmy accompanying them for the ride. The family stopped in Ringwood on their way home to see Ailsa’s mum, with the black and white Moo Moo and Timmy. “It was mum’s birthday. Every year we buy her some sort of little black and white cow, so we’ll hand Moo Moo over and say here’s your birthday present,” Ailsa said, quickly adding “but we’re taking her with us when we leave.” “She was destined to come home with us.”

Madelyn, James, Jack, Ailsa and Vanessa with their greyhounds Timmy and Moo Moo

Jack and Madelyn are claiming a dog each and straight away began customising the names to Missy Moo Moo and Tiger. There was excitement about Timmy’s racing past – first-place for his one and only race. Why adopt two greyhounds? “Friends are fostering a greyhound and I just fell in love with them. I’ve been watching GAP’s website to look at the greyhounds that were going to be here (at Geelong). Every day it was the first thing that came up on my computer screen – and if you’re going to house train one you might as well house train two.”

DON'T WAIT APPLY FOR DNA TODAY! GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early.

GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season.

For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.

JANUARY 2018

For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.

SALE SYNDICATE READY 2 RACE BARGAIN While there’s no such thing as a sure thing when it comes to greyhound racing, the Sale syndicates have had a strong track record to date. “Anybody who has been in our syndicates so far have made a handsome profit, although we can give no guarantees. The only guarantee we give is that we will give people the chance to enjoy the thrill of racing their own dog at a minimal cost,” Dooley said. Des Dooley with Ready 2 Race purchases Bindi and Salegraze

by Luke Holmesby

A

s the long-standing manager of the Sale Greyhound Racing Club, Des Dooley is one of the strongest advocates for greyhound racing in the Gippsland region. Dooley, who recently clocked up half a century in the greyhound racing game, knows that talking up the sport is not enough and puts his money where his mouth is at every opportunity.

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

Dooley’s most recent investment in the sport came in November’s Ready 2 Race sales where he led a syndicate involved in the Sale club. “It’s the sixth syndicate to be run by the club. Syndicate members subscribe $200 per share and the club appoints trustees to purchase race dogs on the members behalf,” Dooley said. “It’s a very professionally run set-up and everyone involved gets a lot of enjoyment out of it, it’s a great bonding experience.”

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

The latest acquisitions have been two female greyhounds named Bindi and Salegraze Fantasy – both of whom have strong bloodlines, have been reared by the highly-credentialed Bartolo family and will be trained by Devon Meadows trainer Chris Johannsen. Bindi had a poor start in both trials when on show at Ready 2 Race but showed enough potential to warrant purchasing while Salegraze Fantasy is considered to be one of the bargain buys of the auction at just $3000. “Greyhound Racing Victoria recently brought in a boosted prize money arrangement which makes the sport more lucrative than ever for potential owners,” Dooley said. “There has been a big focus from GRV and the Victorian Government on ensuring Victorian greyhound racing has a long and prosperous future and I believe there has never been a better time to be involved in our sport."

HAVE YOUR SAY: DRAFT PENALTY GUIDELINES – GREYHOUND WELFARE

G

reyhound Racing Victoria is seeking your comment on its draft Penalty Guidelines – Greyhound Welfare 2018.

A six-week consultation period will end on 2 February.

24

Past purchases through Ready 2 Race and private contacts through the Sale network have seen success stories such as Salegreys Verto which finished runner up in the Group 1 Silver Chief as well as Salegreys Iscool, Salegreys Tabaret, Cornish Lady, Salegreys Gold and Salegreys Power who all went on to have metropolitan success.

The draft guidelines, which update the current guidelines, put forward a range of penalties for welfare offences committed within the greyhound racing industry. Once finalised, the new guidelines will assist GRV when making decisions about penalties under the rules of racing. The guidelines are not binding on the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board or VCAT, but will inform GRV’s approach when making submissions to these bodies.

in line with community expectation, while allowing for discretion for incidents that are not as serious. The guidelines are part of GRV’s commitment to a racing industry in which the safety and welfare of greyhounds comes first. The review of the penalty guidelines falls within the wider penalty review that began in response to the Office of Racing Integrity Commissioner and Chief Veterinarian Officer reports in 2015. They also reflect the Government’s expectations regarding greyhound welfare and the additional animal welfare functions GRV has through changes to the Racing Act 1958 in early 2016. The guidelines cover five categories of offences ranging up to the most serious, Category 5 offences, which relate to intentionally causing harm to a greyhound.

Welfare offences will continue to be considered based on the specific circumstances of each individual case. Aggravating and mitigating factors, such as prior offences, remorse, cooperation, and action taken, will also be considered when making a recommendation as to the appropriate penalty.

GRV publishes guidelines as part of our commitment to transparency and to ensure that participants and the public are aware of GRV’s expectations and compliance approach.

GRV has set out to develop guidelines that apply a strict approach to serious non-compliance, deter inappropriate activities and are

JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED

Dr Mino crossing the line to win the Group Two Laurels

By Mick Floyd

J

udy and Bill McMahon registered their first group race win in 30 years of greyhound training when Dr Mino scored a stunning last-to-first victory in the Group 2 Laurels at Sandown Park on Thursday 14 December. While a tardy start would typically put paid to a greyhound’s winning chances – especially when running just 5.42 to the first split in a group race final – handler Bill McMahon couldn’t have been happier to see his charge fall out of the boxes, believing it was her best chance to avoid trouble and capitalise on the greyhound’s strength. “I was happy as Larry when she missed the kick. She had to miss the kick,” he told Sky Racing’s Dave Carlson.

“Once we got through the catching pen (the first time) I thought we were home, especially with those two dogs in front, I was pretty confident we could catch them.” Dr Mino burst onto the racing scene in October when she went through the rich Vic Breeders series undefeated. Last night’s win was her fifth from 10 career starts – all at Sandown Park – and took her career prize money beyond $72,000. The result for the husband and wife team was particularly pleasing given that, with the assistance of their five kids, the family does all of the work to get their home bred pups to the track. “She’s been super from day 1 when we broke her in. The Vic Breeders was the target, then everything played out from there. It’s a good start to her career.” Added Judy, “the kids get a lot out of it as well because they do so much of the work with them when they’re pups, bringing them up through the ranks and handling them in the kennels. There’s some excited people in the family right now.”

The objective of these sessions is to help participants with the Victorian Government’s planning amendments for greyhound facilities. More information about the planning requirements and exemptions can be found by searching for ‘greyhound’ at: planning.vic.gov.au

The intended structure of the session is: • 1 hr presentation from independent planning experts • 1 hr question and answer panel session with planning experts and participants • 1 hr informal discussion Nibbles to be provided by the Clubs

QUICK JAGGER SUPREME AT SALE by Gerard Guthrie

W

estern Australian star Quick Jagger, the only interstate finalist, emulated his sire Dyna Nalin when upstaging millionaire Fanta Bale in the Group 1 TRFM Sale Cup Final (650m) on Boxing Day.

Sale Cup winner Quick Jagger with handler Tamika Fasoli

Quick Jagger continued WA’s excellent recent record in the Cup, following in the footsteps of Dyna Nalin in 2013 and Star Recall, which was also sent to Victoria by Halse and partner Linda Britton in 2014. While the Cannington 520m record-holder only had one unplaced middle distance appearance in his home state, he won impressively over 595m at Sandown Park before winning his Sale Cup heat in 37.37sec, just .03 outside Chasin’ Crackers qualifying standard. Melbourne Cup runner-up Chasin’ Crackers started $3.10 favourite in Tuesday night’s $75,000 to-the-winner final, shading champion Fanta Bale at $3.30, with Quick Jagger one of three finalists at $7.50. Chasin’ Crackers was best to begin, but Quick Jagger and Fanta Bale were in close attendance and in a memorable drive to the line, Quick Jagger finished best to defeat Fanta Bale by 1.29 lengths in 37.35sec, with Chasin’ Crackers finishing third. “The dog has loads of ability and he’s always promised a lot, so to finally win a Group 1 was a great feeling,” said Chris Halse, who watched the Cup in his car after trialling in WA.

“Deep down I knew I had the fastest dog in the race, which sounds funny when you look at Fanta Bale and the other dogs in the race. “It was just a matter of luck, because if there’s a way to get beaten, Quick Jagger will find it. If something can go wrong in a race, it will go wrong with him. The best way to put it is that he’s a dumb dog, which probably makes sense because he’s owned by a group of Irishmen! “We won the Sale Cup with Star Recall. She was a very good bitch, but Quick Jagger is quicker than she was and he’s stronger too.” It was a fairy-tale result for Quick Jagger’s three owners, Irishmen Declan Edmonds and Eamonn Fitzpatrick and friend Geoff Chatfield, with first-time owner Edmonds telling GRV in the lead-up to the Cup that prior to owning Quick Jagger he “didn’t know what a Group 1 was!” “I’m still shaking. Best day of my life. I’m on cloud nine,” an ecstatic Edmonds said moments after Quick Jagger’s triumph.
