CEO’s Update

O

ne month into the new year and the 2018 racing calendar is well and truly underway with the Warragul and Traralgon legs of the second annual Gippsland Carnival, building on the success of the inaugural event last year. There has also been a great win by Out of Range at the Feikuai Greyhounds Silver Chief, a thrilling finish by Aston Dee Bee at the Sandown Shootout and plenty of racing action at the Warrnambool Seaside Carnival. It’s been a big first month for GRV which is looking to adopt a ‘business as usual’ approach this year after a heavy emphasis on building our integrity and welfare capabilities over the past two years. The Gippsland Carnival comes to a thrilling conclusion on February 10 with the final leg at Cranbourne and I’m eager to see who takes out the glory in greyhound racing’s exciting new carnival concept. With so much buzz and excitement to come out of Gippsland in such a short period, we are now looking at combining cups held in other areas of the state for a similar carnival concept. While the Gippsland Carnival is one of Victorian greyhound racing’s most thrilling new creations, the focus soon switches back to one of our more longstanding traditions with the 60th Australian Cup Carnival starting at The Meadows on 17 February including five Group 1 races with more than a million dollars in prize money. As well as some elite racing, there are many activities off the track for greyhound fans and their families. In other racing news, coursing, which in many ways is seen as Victoria’s 14th greyhound club, celebrated its achievements from the previous season with the 2017 Coursing Awards on 25 January, which is featured in this edition of the Monthly. Speaking of achievements, one of the best racers the sport has seen in recent years, Ando’s Mac, as well as the highly promising Aston Miley, both retired in January and this issue of Greyhound Monthly also takes a look back at some of their career highlights.

A big thanks also to our Emma Hall, and the Strategic Communication and Marketing department for their terrific efforts in promoting the weekend and ensuring everything ran smoothly. There were some challenges with the new approach, notably when more than 50 greyhounds were adopted on the opening day. At that point the decision was made to get on the phone to foster carers around the state on Friday night to organise some last-minute green collar testing of foster greyhounds on Saturday morning. This resulted in an extra 10 adoptions that might not otherwise have happened. We are looking forward to our next GAP adoption day coming up on 25 February at Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association. Over February and March, Victoria’s Racing Integrity Commissioner, Sal Perna, will once again be holding annual roadshows across Victoria at race clubs on race days to talk about his role and responsibilities and the work of his office. You can find out more about how to take part in these sessions in this issue. Also covered this month are the Finish on Lure trials at Geelong, planning permit sessions being held by the new Victorian Clubs Association as well as updates on the VicGreys program and the proposed new Penalty guidelines. Looking ahead, I’d like to remind participants that GRV’s Hot Weather Policy is still in force during February and that it applies not just to race meetings but also to travelling to and from them. Beyond that, GRV’s new Racing and Breeding Reference Groups have been now been formed and we will be working closely with them on policies and programs to help secure the sport’s long-term future, along with developing new strategies to expand greyhound racing’s market share and audience experience. In one big positive, I am particularly encouraged to see a recent increase in sustainable breeding as this has been an area of strong focus for GRV and the industry in general. I am confident that this work will deliver an even stronger and more exciting racing program in 2018 that will further position Victoria as a world leader in the sport.

Aston Dee Bee wins the Warragul Cup from Jimmy Newob (6), Kouta Mayhem (2) and Aston Miley (8).

Aston Dee Bee answers critics in Warragul Cup By Andrew Copley & Gerard Guthrie

M

elbourne Cup hero Aston Dee Bee extended his sensational winning streak to nine with a brilliant display Group 2 TAB Warragul Cup Final (460m) on 13 January, the second leg of the Gippsland Carnival. Remarkably, the Seona Thompson-trained and Ray Bordaowned-and-bred superstar hadn’t been able to claim a Group trophy in 45 starts prior to his overdue breakthrough on the greatest stage of all, the Melbourne Cup. But Aston Dee Bee’s Melbourne Cup triumph opened the feature race floodgates, with the superbly-bred son of Barcia Bale and Aston Elle subsequently adding the Group 2 Ballarat Cup, Group 3 Sandown Shootout and now the Warragul Cup to his resume.

Former Richmond premiership teammates Kevin Bartlett (right) and GRV Board Member, Emmett Dunne entertained the Warragul Cup crowd.

The winner of five of his eight appearances over 460m at Warragul, including a track record 25.34sec at just his fifth career start, Aston Dee Bee was the fastest qualifier for the $47,000 to-the-winner Cup after a 25.49sec heat victory. After drawing awkwardly in five, Aston Dee Bee started $2.30 favourite, ahead of his locally-trained litter sister, Aston Miley, prepared by Eddie Lieshout, the $4.30 second elect from box eight.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Aston Dee Bee settled in third position behind fellow Melbourne Cup finalists Aston Miley and Kouta Mayhem and after storming to the front turning for home, he sprinted clear to defeat the strong-finishing Jimmy Newob by 2.36 lengths in 25.53sec.

"I’m so happy he has won a big race like this from a bad box,” Borda said. “Some people have been saying that he keeps drawing the good boxes and that’s why he keeps winning, but he silenced his critics tonight. We’ve got interest from breeders wanting to use him at stud but I want to win a million dollars prize money with him before he retires from the track,” Borda said. Earlier in the night, former NSW middle distance and staying performer Where Art Thou, trained by Steve White, stormed home to claim the $10,000 to-the-winner Endeavour Locksmith Distance Challenge over 680m.

Melbourne Vixens star Lara Dunkley (right) and fellow netballer Matilda Garrett were guests at the Warragul Cup.

Local families enjoyed a host of free activities at the Warragul Cup’s Turbo’s Trackside.

Bear’s Traralgon Triumph By Andrew Copley & Gerard Guthrie

R

ising star Poke The Bear claimed his first feature trophy on Australia Day evening with an emphatic victory in the Group 2 Spolly’s Syndications Traralgon Cup Final (525m). While 2018 is not yet one month old, Poke The Bear’s Traralgon Cup triumph was the second Group success in the New Year for trainer Seona Thompson and owner/breeders Darren and his father Michael Puleio and their high-flying Fernando Bale – Nicki Fields litter. Poke The Bear was first reserve for the Group 1 Silver Chief at The Meadows on January 5, won by his litter brother Out Of Range.

“We’ve been waiting 15 years for this,” a delighted Michael Puleio said. “I was very confident about his chances tonight, even if no one else was. Once he got into second place I knew he’d win. He’s the best in the litter.”

Co-breeder/owner Michael Puleio is interviewed after the win. Two of the Greyhound Adoption Program’s most dedicated volunteers, Gippsland’s Lynda and Julie Dixon, were presented with a surprise birthday cake and flowers.

Despite drawing box six for the Traralgon Cup, which was brought forward from Saturday under GRV’s Hot Weather Policy, Poke The Bear started $2.60 favourite, having won his previous three starts, including a 30.30sec heat win. Local hope Monster Fish ($7.70), one of two finalists trained by Kate Gorman, was able to cross to the front from box seven, but Poke The Bear also carved across to move ominously into second soon after rounding the first turn. Monster Fish retained a slender lead turning for home, but was claimed soon after by the strong-finishing Poke The Bear, which drew clear to score by 1.57 lengths in a fast 30.03sec, his fourth straight victory and 13th from 19 overall, with the $47,000 winner’s purse swelling his earnings past the $100,000 mark.

Earlier in the night, William McMahon prepared a family trifecta in the $7500 to-the-winner GRV Vic Bred Maiden Series Final, with Demand A Panda defeating litter and kennel mates Annasay and Marcello in 30.86sec, with just .57 of a length separating the trio.

Waterslides were popular kids at the Traralgon Cup.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

The $10,000 to-the-winner Traralgon Distance Cup over 665m went to favourite Brueghelino, trained by Des Douch, which defeated Diane O’Neill’s littermates Shae’s Intention and Royal Intention in 39.03sec.

A huge crowd of 1300 people turned out for the Traralgon Cup despite a late change of date.

FEBRUARY 2018

“Like dad (Michael) said, it has been a long time coming,” Darren Puleio said. “We’ve been breeding for a while now and we always try to do the right thing by our pups. “To get one really good dog isn’t easy, but this litter has produced two Group winners already and they’re only two years old. We are blessed.”

Fish opens up Monster lead Last weekend’s Traralgon Cup runner-up Monster Fish has extended his lead in the race for a share in the $20,000 bonus prize money on offer throughout the Gippsland Carnival. Monster Fish picked up 16 points by winning a heat of the Traralgon Cup, followed by a further seven points for running 2nd in the final, taking his score across the carnival up to 44 points. The Cranbourne Cup is the last chance for greyhounds to earn points throughout the 2017/18 Gippsland Carnival, heats of which will be run this Saturday, 3 February over the 520m distance. The Gippsland Carnival incorporates the 2017 Sale Cup (650m) and Gippsland Carnival Launch (440m), which were both held on Boxing Day, as well as the 2018 Warragul Cup (January 13), Traralgon Cup (January 26) and Cranbourne Cup (February 10). The highest points scorer throughout the entire Gippsland Carnival will receive $14,000, with $4,000 and $2,000 to go to the second and third highest points scorers respectively.

Punters Club’s charity push By Andrew Copley

P

unters Club players at the 2018 Warragul Cup left Logan Park in good spirits as a 42 per cent profit was made meaning punters walked away with $14.20 for their $10 tickets. However, with the winnings distributed there was $1.90 left over, prompting host James Van de Maat (pictured) to donate the money to a charity. “One of the punters suggested we donate the leftover money to the Kids with

Cancer Foundation, and when the announcement was made, 21 winning punters decided to also donate their winnings from the punters club to the cause,” Van de Maat said. “I was so impressed by such a lovely crowd, so I donated an extra $100 to the this fabulous cause. I’m proud to say that not only did we back a few winners, we also donated $343.30 to Kids With Cancer Foundation at the 2018 Warragul Cup.”

down the road who have five little dogs - there’s a Cavalier spaniel, sausage dogs and a poodle - so I’d put Bobby on a lead and walk him over there.”

Simon Barker's success at GAP By Suzanne McKenzie

W

ith 50 years in the business, owner-trainer Simon Barker believes he has hit on the right formula for rehoming his greyhounds.

His success can be partly boiled down to one simple tip: get to know neighbours who have small dogs. Two of his dogs, Dark Jameson, known as Bobby, and Sips Slowly, known as Oscar, found new homes at the Greyhound Adoption Program’s weekend-long adoption event, which was held at their Seymour kennels in January. A record 104 greyhounds were adopted over the two days.

He prefers to take his dogs to Seymour for assessment rather than to sessions at racetracks where they can be distracted by the familiar surroundings and at home he keeps them away from his racing kennels and brings them inside the house. Five year old Bobby retired from the racing track 12 months ago. Simon, who had Bobby for two years - first to train him, then as a pet - always thought he was a special dog with a beautiful nature. He also had success on the track, with 13 wins and 27 minor placings in 77 starts. “It broke my heart to let him go, but my 101 year old dad has come to live with me again and I’m worried that he will trip over the dog or the gate will be left open. It wasn’t safe for dad or the dog.” Bobby has swapped the race track for a life with Kylie and Mark Sutton, their children Brittany, Braydon, Makaya and Kyran, plus six horses, a Jack Russell terrier, cats and cows in Numurkah. “I can’t get over his gentle nature,” Kylie said. “He is so laid back.”

Bobby had a moment in the limelight as a radio star just before the big adoption weekend. He went with Adoptions Manager Larissa Darragh to 3AW’s studio to promote the weekend and drew plenty of pats and attention from the show’s hosts on-air.

Kylie is a recent convert to greyhounds. She recently attended her first-ever greyhound meeting at Shepparton where she met some former GAP dogs, fell in love with the breed and a few weeks later she was taking one home from Seymour.

Larissa praised Simon for his efforts: “Simon does a lot of work preparing his dogs for rehoming, and he does it very well.”

Bobby has settled into his new home. A bit like Goldilocks, he tried to find the perfect place to sleep and after a restless first night he rejected the couple’s bed, then a beanbag and a toddler’s bed before he finally settled for the family couch. Spread out on the couch in Numurkah, he looks ready for a quiet retirement.

“You have to get them used to small dogs. It’s the tiny breeds that throw them. There are two women who live

AB Melbourne Cup winner of 2016; Ando’s Mac, was retired to stud last month after succumbing to injury.

1 Vic Peters six months later. Success in the age classic was the beginning of an unforgettable month for connections, culminating in Ando’s Mac claiming the world’s richest greyhound race, the TAB Melbourne Cup.

The winner of 28 of his 61 career starts and $687,931 in prize money has been battling a persistent stopper bone tendon injury, leading trainer Anthony Azzopardi to call time on his stellar career.

Ando’s Mac will stand at stud at Anthony Azzopardi’s Money Shot Lodge for a fee of $1250 and will be ready to commence duties later this month. Interested breeders should contact Luke Anderson on: 0400 715 185 or email lukeyando22@hotmail.com.

“He’s had it for a while now and we’ve worked through it, but lately, I just feel it’s starting to go so now is the right time to call it a day,” he said just days before Ando’s Mac was set for a tilt at defending his Warragul Cup crown.

“We want to give breeders a cheaper option to access a Melbourne Cup winner. Hopefully a few breeders use him, it’ll be exciting to see his pups on the track.”

“He was just a real race dog, he knew what to do. He was really good in a field and a fantastic chaser. He has a great temperament and was a terrific traveller – car trips, plane trips nothing would worry him.”

Ando’s Mac

For part owner Luke Anderson, Ando’s Mac’s retirement draws to the end a life changing journey that saw he and the rest of the connections achieve success at the highest levels of the sport. Bred by Anderson’s father, Frank, Ando’s Mac is one of six members of the June 2014 El Grand Senor-Brook’s Doll mating. Anderson kept two pups from the litter – his partner Michaele Alderdice picked out ‘Max’ because of his striking fawn colouring – and it wasn’t long before the owners knew they had something special. “We knew when he was pretty young. I said to most of my friends that I had a special one from the start, a lot of them laughed but it was true. He was only about 19 months old when he went 25.04 at Ballarat and after that we received a number of offers for him, including one of $75,000. He’s changed our lives completely.” Anderson rejected the lucrative offer for his young pup, and his faith in the dog was repaid when Ando’s Mac took out the group

SAL PERNA ANNUAL ROADSHOW Victoria’s Racing Integrity Commissioner Sal Perna will once again be conducting his annual roadshows throughout the state.

The roadshows, which will be held at greyhound, thoroughbred and harness racing clubs throughout regional and metropolitan Victoria, will run according to an informal Q&A approach. The roadshows will coincide with race days in accordance with feedback from previous years. The sessions are aimed at building on those undertaken in the previous six years to create a greater understanding and awareness of the role and responsibilities of the Commissioner, the work the office has undertaken and an overview of what is in place to ensure that the Victorian Racing Industry operates free from the influence of crime and corruption. The Commissioner’s attendance will provide anyone attending the race meeting an opportunity to raise questions and hear first-hand of the Commissioner’s perspectives on integrity in the racing industry. Simon passed away in December 2016 at age 30 following a serious bike accident, having been involved in greyhound racing for about 12 months as a kennel hand for Steve White’s team in Buln Buln East. Simon’s brother Sandy Benson was among the many friends and relatives that attended the race meeting. “It was awesome. I didn’t really know what to expect but it was a great night, and to have six heats, I think it was a big success. Steve and Kerrie White were pretty keen to put something on for Simon and so was the Warragul GRC, so our family is obviously very appreciative,” Sandy said. Benson said he has plans to build on the event in future years,

“I’d like the Simon Benson Memorial to grow each year and to one day be as big as the Warragul Cup. Simon had ADD (attention deficit disorder) and he was larger than life. He loved greyhound racing and was always with Steve trialling or racing at different tracks. Greyhound racing gave him a purpose and the day he got his handler’s license he was so happy.” “He was also involved in horse racing and people like Luke Nolen and Darren Weir knew him by name. Simon had no idea how famous they were. He didn’t know Luke rode Black Caviar and that Darren was a top trainer, he’d just talk to anyone who was up for a chat,” The $5,000 to-the-winner Simon Benson Memorial, for greyhounds with 1-4 wins, was won by the Paul Abela-trained Turbo Tom.

Frequently Asked Questions

GRV’s acting General Manager for Racing, Scott Robins provides answers some of the more common questions relating to the Finish On Lure. What is the future of the finish on lure in Victoria?

10

hopefully with the help of a sponsor.

on the lure, the decision was made in conjunction with GRV and GGRC to resume racing on the FOL. Were there any other changes to Geelong’s facilities while the track was closed?

Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) has formed a Finish on Lure (FOL) working group, which is made up of members of GRV, the Geelong Greyhound Racing Club (GGRC) and the Greyhound Owners Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA). The working group are actively reviewing the FOL trial at Geelong. The working group assessment will form their recommendation in late January 2018, and will be based on key data from the trial which includes; nomination numbers, injuries, racing incidents and relevant participant feedback.

Yes, in line with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) phase one recommendations we increased the camber of the track from 8.33 per cent to 10 per cent and top-dressed the track with the aim to provide smooth transitions, reduce crowding and the potential for injuries and interference. General maintenance was also conducted during this time which saw the rail sandblasted and repainted.

Why do we still need catchers if there is a finish on lure?

GRV Lure drivers have driven under the guidance of New Zealand lure driver Ray Urdy. Urdy has many years’ experience driving the Finish on Lure in New Zealand and was enthusiastic in his support for our lure drivers and has focused on safe stopping procedures to ensure the greyhounds safety.

Catchers are only required when races are run over 400 metres. Handlers are required to catch their greyhounds when races are conducted over the 460-metre distance. Although there is only 60 metres difference between the races, the lure pulls up in a close proximity to the 460 metre boxes which allows the handlers to collect their greyhounds once the lure is no longer in motion. In the interest of the health and safety of both the greyhounds and participants, handlers are not permitted to enter the track surface when the lure is in motion.

Will there be appropriate training for lure drivers?

How has the trial affected nomination numbers at Geelong? Nominations for the Finish on Lure have been high since the introduction at the start of December 2017. In the first month of operation Geelong averaged 167 nominations for both Tier 3 and Provincial meetings, which is around 30 extra nominations. Nominations continue to be high.

Why did Geelong switch to the Finish on Lure?

Will there be any change to the shape or size of the lure?

Geelong was closed in October 2017 due to an unidentified issue with the lure as well as an increase in injuries in the catching pen. After testing

The size and shape of the lure will remain the same throughout the remaining trial period.

“She’s due in March and we are hoping to bring her back for the second half of the coursing season, including the 2018 Waterloo Cup,” he said.“I believe coursing is safer than circle racing and that the dogs enjoy it more. I also think mixing it up between coursing and circle racing prevents greyhounds from going stale. ast season’s best performers on the Victorian coursing circuit were recognised at the 2017 National Coursing Association Awards at Sandown Park on 25 January.

Among them was Gotham Queen, who was crowned the Female Greyhound of the Year after a season that saw her take out the Victorian Oaks, Longwood Cup and a Waterloo Cup Consolation. While she was the dominant female greyhound of the coursing season based on a points system, trainer and part-owner Sean Lithgow was excited to announce that his star would soon be a mum. “She is in pup to Walk Hard which is really exciting as we (wife Melanie and I) have never bred a litter before,” Lithgow said. “We were tempted to miss the season and keep racing her, but the previous time she came on-season was 16 months earlier, so we thought it might be a long time before she’s comes on again. We originally bought her to breed with, and she has really exceeded our expectations on the track.”

Survey to form part of new-look registration rollout GRV is looking to introduce new registration categories for whelping, rearing and educating greyhounds. This means that if you whelp, rear or educate greyhounds you will need to be registered with GRV under those specific categories. To help communicate these changes to those who undertake these activities, we will be asking participants to complete a short survey.

to collate important information leading up to the implementation of the new categories later this year. The survey will be available from mid-February and you will be prompted to complete the survey when you log into your FastTrack account. You will have the option to complete the survey later, however it will take less than 2 minutes to complete. If you do not use FastTrack we will be able to complete the survey via phone, with GRV to contact participants throughout March 2018.

News By Sandra Reed President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.

Now that the massive task of consultations on the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Greyhounds is over, we are able to report, through our continued persistence, that we have been presented with a code that is vastly improved and, although not exactly what we would have liked, it is workable. For all those participants that enquire ‘why should I be a member of the GOTBA’, I believe the work done by our organisation on the Code of Practice has saved the industry. We are always working on your behalf for improved conditions and outcomes and on the many changes in rules and regulations to ensure your voice is heard. The encouraging situation now is that we are accepted as the industry voice by the current Ministers, Office of Racing, the Integrity Commissioner and GRV. We are regularly called upon to report on current issues. Therefore, the more members we have the stronger we will become. If you don’t have the time to help with the running of our organisation, you have an obligation to contribute to the future success of greyhound racing by being a member of the GOTBA. There is strength in numbers; you only have to look at what happened in NSW when owners and trainers came together to rally against the ban on greyhound racing. It cost some politicians their jobs and overturned the decision. We can have that sort of power if we all join in our efforts to protect our sport. Don’t wait, join up now and stay informed about what we are doing on your behalf. Take time to email us or talk to our representatives. If you want to continue to race your dogs you need to support the GOTBA. Join us on our Supernite at Sandown Park in April for the running of the GOTBA Cup. This is a night of celebration for members with many door prizes and the opportunity for a member who books in on the night (and is present for the draw) to win $1000. Bring along a group of friends or sponsor a race so that this night becomes a reminder of our achievements and gives you the opportunity to meet the committee. There is now more involvement than ever before of participants in working groups that discuss how to improve racing, breeding, welfare and more general topics. We would like as many members as possible that have expertise in any area to become involved and work with us so that our sport prospers. We are on most

WHAT IS THE GOTBA?

groups or get reports from them, however we can only dedicate a limited amount of time, so your assistance and input makes our job easier. In the coming year we will be working on improving the Planning Scheme that allows you to gain a permit for the Keeping of Greyhounds. This was an initiative of the GOTBA but has not turned out as originally proposed, so we will be seeking to have it amended. Our representative on the racing group will express the importance of having scientific studies done on the best possible racing surfaces and track design to help reduce injuries to help ensure long racing careers for our dogs. Also, we want the grading of races to be simplified and to give the maximum amount of opportunities for greyhounds to be competitive and race regularly. Bringing new people into the industry is vital, however this is difficult without previous family involvement or the encouragement of a mentor. Therefore, we will be working to develop an apprenticeship scheme that also attaches people to a mentor for practical experience. The new recommended penalties for welfare issues has been out for comment and while we agree that serious welfare breaches need appropriate penalties, we will be recommending that minor infringements are not given severe and inappropriate penalties. The recommended minimums need adjustment and consideration to the earning capacity of participants so that the penalty is appropriate to that person. Although the penalties are only recommended, the persons handing out these penalties might assume that the minimum is just that and not adjust them accordingly. Even though the last few years have been difficult, I think the future for participants will be bright, as long as we can maintain our involvement with the decision makers and get continued support from owners, trainers and breeders. All members need to become politically aware, know what parties support greyhound racing and who doesn’t, and use your vote to make a difference. When we all have the attitude of ‘what can I do for greyhound racing (which is our committee’s moto)’ rather than ‘what can the GOTBA do for me’ we will become an association of respected leaders and be able to achieve great things.

ong-time Sandown GRC employee, Graeme Wright sadly passed away in Malvern’s Cabrini Hospital on 16 January after a short battle with cancer.

FEBRUARY 2018

The Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of member and their greyhounds.

Graeme, 79, was a highly valued staff member at Sandown for 46 years, missing very few race meetings in that time and being a friendly and familiar face among colleagues and greyhound racing participants in the kennel block.

“He was loyal and dependable, and always had a positive attitude to his work and to those he worked with. He had a remarkable ability to put a smile on the face of all that met him, and will be sorely missed by everyone at Sandown.” Wright dedicated his life to family and friends and was the President of the Monash City Church of Christ ministry known as F-Troop, which started as a group for parents with young adult children who wanted to get out and do something and morphed into a social and fellowship group for older adults. Graeme was a dearly loved and devoted husband of Jeanette, and loved father of Allison & David, Peter & Leanne, Andrew & Danni. Aston Dee Bee is renowned for his strength, and when the $1.40 favourite found the lead in the early stages of the Shootout many expected him to win comfortably. However, WA star Quick Jagger, who won the Group 1 TRFM Sale Cup (650m) on Boxing Day and gained a start in the Shootout as a reserve following the scratching of Bewildering, came from last to storm home and be beaten in a photo finish. While the judges were quick to semaphore a victory for Aston Dee Bee, winning trainer Seona Thompson wasn’t confident. “I thought the 9 had got him right on the line, so I was very relieved to see the 3 go onto the board,” she said. “I hoped he’d go to the front like he did. Quick Jagger is a super strong dog coming off a Sale Cup win, (his trainer) Chris Halse has done a fantastic job to get the dog to where he is, he’s a phenomenal dog. To hold him off at the line by a half-head, I’m very happy.” The Shootout stretched Aston Dee Bee’s winning streak to seven, including the TAB Melbourne Cup, and took his

Conditions for the race have evolved in that time but throughout its history it has attracted the fastest greyhounds in the Australia. “He’s a super dog and hopefully he can keep rolling along, but they’re not machines, they’re animals and while he’s doing a wonderful job, as long as he gets around safe that’s all that really matters.” Thompson originally had two entries in the Shootout but was forced to scratch Bewlidering after he succumbed to a hock injury, gifting Quick Jagger a start in the race. Fortunately the injury wasn’t severe and the dual Speed Star winner should soon be back on track.

ut Of Range’s win in the $142,750 Feikuai Greyhounds Silver Chief (525m) at The Meadows on 5 January was the first Group 1 win for Langwarrin’s Darren Puleio and his father, Michael. The Puleios bred former top class greyhounds Boris Fields and Xtreme Knocka, both of which won in excess of $200,000 in prize money, however they sold that pair as pups.

The Seona Thompson-trained Out Of Range took full advantage of his prized inside alley to hold the lead in the all-important charge to the first turn, beating Degani ($5.90) by 0.79 of a length in 29.83sec, with Fast Car Driving ($12.60) third in 29.83sec.

“We feel that getting our dogs used to things like being handled and travelling in a car from a young age is important for their socialisation and confidence, and this has been a key part of our success. Once they’ve spent some time with dad, we send them to a breaker, then they go back to dad for pre-training and then we send them off to be trained.” The Silver Chief is open to Australia’s best young male greyhound sprinters and, remarkably, Out Of Range was the sixth winner of the race trained by the Thompson kennel.

Out Of Range’s litter brother and kennelmate Poke The Bear was first reserve for the Silver Chief and while he missed a shot at the $100,000 winner’s purse, Poke The Bear set The Meadows alight earlier in the night when coming from the rear of the field to clock a scintillating 29.71sec in the free-for-all.

Race goers enjoyed watching the Big Bash cricket on a giant screen at the Silver Chief.

Welfare Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare

Changes to GAP Pre-entry Vaccination Requirements The serious Kennel Cough outbreak that forced the closure of GAP’s operations for several weeks in August 2017 has prompted GRV to review the pre-entry vaccination requirements for GAP. While vaccinations are not always 100% against Kennel Cough, it is generally accepted that the intra-nasal and oral Kennel Cough vaccinations are more effective than the injectable form. There is also some evidence that the protection period from these vaccines could be as short as 6 months in some situations. As a result, from 1 March 2018, to be eligible for GAP pre-entry assessment, greyhounds will require a different vaccination regime. For many of you, the new requirements will be no change to what you are already doing. • C3 vaccination (Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis) within the last 2½ years (or within 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age): this is in line with scientific literature and is less stringent than the current requirement.

• Kennel Cough intra-nasal or oral vaccination (Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months: in addition to having a current C3 vaccination, the greyhound must have received the Bordetella component of the Kennel Cough vaccine as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine no longer than 6 months before the pre-entry assessment. This is more stringent than the current requirement. Please note that while the intra-nasal kennel Cough vaccine protects against both Bordetella and Parainfluenza, the oral vaccine only protects against Bordetella. Therefore, if using the oral vaccine, the Parainfluenza vaccine will have to have been given by separate injection (i.e. on its own or as part of a combined C4 vaccine). As is the case now, the vaccinations must be given at least 10 days prior to the pre-entry assessment. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements, please contact GRV.

VACCINATION ALERT Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

Recent reports of an outbreak of Parvovirus in central Victoria are a good reminder to make sure your greyhounds’ vaccinations are up to date. In addition, the serious kennel cough outbreak in late 2017 highlighted the potential threat to the viability of the racing program if an outbreak were to deplete the availability of racing dogs for what could be a period of at least several weeks. Greyhound vaccinations protect against the highly infectious, and often deadly, diseases Parvovirus, Distemper and Canine Infectious Hepatitis (‘Hepatitis’), as well as the highly contagious Kennel Cough (canine parainfluenza virus and Bordetella bronchiseptica). Mandatory minimum vaccinations under racing rules, which are all recorded on FastTrack, are an initial vaccination at 6-8 weeks of age (“1st puppy vaccination”), another at 10-16 weeks of age (“2nd puppy vaccination”), and a third after 12 months of age prior to naming (“naming vaccination”); all as described below. • “C3 vaccination”: Vaccination against Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (injected as a combined “C3” vaccination) is required at all three of the above time points. In addition, to maintain protection against these three diseases, greyhounds should also have booster vaccinations at least every 3 years for life.

• Kennel Cough: Vaccination against Kennel Cough (canine parainfluenza virus and Bordetella bronchiseptica) can be given by intra-nasal, oral or injectable routes, and must be given at both the 2nd puppy vaccination and the naming vaccination. Kennel Cough vaccine makes up the 4th and 5th parts of what is termed the “C5 vaccination”. In addition, Kennel Cough should be boosted every 6-12 months (depending level of disease risk and the type of vaccine used) for life. Please note: • Racing: This is the current minimum requirement for racing. This may change in future, as discussions are ongoing as to whether booster vaccinations after the naming vaccination should be mandatory. Depending on your individual situation (including your property’s history of infectious disease), and the vaccine manufacturer’s directions, your veterinarian may recommend an additional puppy vaccination, or changes to the booster schedule. It is important that you follow your veterinarian’s advice to best protect your greyhounds. • GAP: Pre-entry vaccination requirements are different and are changing again on 1 March 2018. Please see the separate article, and the notes on the GAP page, in this edition. If you or your veterinarian would like more information, please contact GRV.

The following table shows an example of a best-practice vaccination schedule for a racing greyhound to help protect it from these preventable diseases (noting that GAP requirements are different): Age

I believe that the fact she had 90 starts and has thrown (ability) to all her pups is a sign of sensible breeding and that she was well rested.”

Noel Mugavin with his former superstar Born Ali and one of her pups.

Mugavin said "a key to successful breeding is to not take short cuts. Breeding, rearing and educating greyhounds is just common sense and it’s extremely similar to preparing a human athlete.” “A balanced diet is crucial, as is exercise, and every day I’ll give one or two of the pups (on rotation) a brush down and walk them on a lead because interaction with people helps them transition into being a confident race dog and being re-homed once they finish racing. My wife and children interact with the pups as well which is great, because getting the pups used to different people is extremely important for their socialisation.” The broader Mugavin family has a rich history in greyhound racing having bred and trained many champions including Express Hazard, Golden Currency, Poetic Reward and Modern Assassin.

“I only breed one or two litters each year and, whether it’s good luck or good management, most of them have made it to the track,” said Mugavin, a Warrnambool school teacher who played VFL football for Richmond and Fitzroy and is an uncle of Brisbane Lions legend, Jonathan Brown. “I think it’s the latter (good management). You can have the best breed, but if your pups are not reared well you are certainly cutting down the chances of them making it to the track. In the last three or four litters I’ve bred every one of the pups have won. It’s extremely satisfying when you rear and educate your pups yourself and they go on to win races.” Among Mugavin’s breeding stock is Born Ali, a greyhound that had over 90 starts and won the Group 1 Galaxy in Perth and

Mugavin was a high-flier in 43 games for Fitzroy and Richmond before injury prematurely ended his promising career in 1982.

A litter sister to current champion Aston Dee Bee, Aston Miley made the finals of the Geelong Cup (3rd), Melbourne Cup (7th) and Warragul Cup (4th). “Aston Miley has come on season along with her litter sister Aston Selena, so I’ve decided to retire them both,” said breeder/ owner Ray Borda. “I’ll be sending Aston Miley to Brett Lee and Aston Selena to Black Magic Opal.” The Eddie Lieshout-trained Aston Miley retires after just 19 starts, which included eight wins and $42,195 in prize money.

“I think it took Eddie a day to tell me Miley had come on-season because he didn’t want to believe it. He knew I was always going to the breed with her as soon as I could. I’ll have to give him another greyhound to train, but she’ll be hard to replace. She’s fast, she’s got great athleticism, size (31kg) and a great temperament,” Borda said. “She could easily have won a group race by now with a bit of luck. Who knows what she might have achieved had she not had a toe removed. She really isn’t that far behind Aston Dee Bee.” Aston Selena, who like Aston Dee Bee is trained by Seona Thompson, had 22 starts for 12 wins including a personal best 29.36sec at Sandown Park, and she earned $33,235 in prize money. W

arrnambool has been a special place for Darren Brown and his late father Peter, who won the 2014 Warrnambool Classic with their star Magic Diva. Now four years on Magic Diva’s first litter are sharing her love for the coastal track.

More than $30,000 in prize money was spread across the 12-race card that night, which was the culmination of six race meetings in the space of 10 days as part of the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club’s annual Seaside Carnival. Trained by Brown at Lara, Chief’s Empire claimed a 0.51 length win in the $7,000 Rising Star final in a time of 25.49sec, also picking up an additional $1,000 thanks to the VicGreys Support Package. Chief’s Empire’s win in the restricted age feature continued his unbeaten record to five. “It is really special to be doing well out of this litter because it was my Dad’s dream to have a litter out of Magic Diva,”

Brown’s night didn’t stop with one star as litter brother Chief’s Sidekick claimed the opening feature event; the Flying Star Sprint Final which is run over the 390-metre distance. The decision to put Fernando Bale over Magic Diva was in hope of throwing strength into Magic Diva’s pups. “We chose Fabregas for the same reason as Fernando Bale, we felt that we needed to add strength into the line because Magic Diva was a good 400 metre dog.” Brown carried the prefix ‘Chief’ through Magic Diva’s Fernando Bale litter in memory of his late father Peter, who was nicknamed Chief. Up Hill Jill was the queen of the night, taking out the $10,000 Warrnambool Summer Cup final (450m) plus an extra $1,000 thanks to the VicGreys Support Package. The Victorian Greyhound Racing Clubs Association (VGRCA) was formed in 2017 as a representative body for the 13 Victorian greyhound racing clubs.

20

The Association has been formed as an incorporated body within Victoria. It operates in accordance with its Rules, and will be represented in strategic discussions by its Executive Committee and its Executive Officer. All Victorian clubs are members of the Association. The Association will form part of a tri-party environment in the Victorian greyhound racing industry, which includes participants, regulators, and the clubs. The Association has a registered trading name of Greyhound Clubs Victoria (GCV). The primary objective of GCV is to encourage and promote the greyhound industry which in summary includes the following: • to represent all clubs in strategic and operational matters that affect the Victorian greyhound racing industry; • to establish a clear role for the clubs within the regulatory and political environment of the Victorian greyhound racing industry; and • to assist the industry in transitioning towards a structured, professional, and collective body of participants who are achieving industry sustainability. With significant industry reforms occurring between 2015 and 2017, clubs have accepted increased responsibility for Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare, compliance, and cultural change. Before the formation of the Association, the roles of clubs and Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) were not always well defined, but given the rate of change within the sport, the role of the clubs has become increasingly important. The formation of a representative Association with an appointed Executive Officer signifies a new era in the Victorian greyhound racing clubs culture, and in the clubs’ relationship with GRV. GCV will meet at least quarterly with two members per club, and an executive appointed to assist the Executive Officer. These meetings will identify and respond to emerging issues within the industry. The committee represents

industry participants, and local communities via the club’s process. The Association has set its Strategic Priorities with the intent of supporting GRV’s vision for the industry. The GCV is also an opportunity for the industry to strengthen its collective capacities, reach agreed views, and represent a collective direction in issues that affect the industry. At its inaugural Annual General Meeting held on 11 December, GCVs appointed Brian Parkinson as its inaugural Executive Officer. Mr Parkinson is a greyhound breeder and owner, and has also served the industry through membership on the board of The Meadows (Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association). Brian also has a lengthy and strong background within the Victorian Trade Union movement. An appointed executive committee will support the Association’s administrative functions. The committee consists of Adrian Scott, Manager of Warragul GRC as the Chairman, David Hoey, Manager Geelong GRC, Vice Chairman and Robert Douglas President of Bendigo GRC as a committee member.

Club Engagement During its formation stages, the GCV established a culture of communicating with clubs. Mr Parkinson and the Executive Committee conducted a series of seminars across Victoria to engage clubs. In pursuing its Strategic Priorities, the GCV will continue to engage with clubs by representing them in a unified industry. It will deliver consistent messages on behalf of the industry and present a collective voice. It aims to manage, promote, and develop Victorian greyhound racing activities using a whole of industry perspective. As a leader, the Association will support the industry in strategic issues, and advocate for clubs by effectively negotiating with the multiple regulatory bodies and political influences. The GCV will assist clubs in establishing professional governance structures, and will communicate with professionalism to protect industry interests. Recognising and acknowledging the local and independent identity of each club is part of the Association’s

agenda, including supporting greyhound racing venues as community hubs, and conducting community engagement by maintaining involvement in local causes, charities, and initiatives. Industry growth is a key priority. To this end, the GCV will promote and host industry development and excellence initiatives, and embrace innovations in safety, welfare, lifecycle management, new racing concepts, and new models of participation. Through these activities, the GCV will focus on encouraging and welcoming new participants. GCV Chairman Adrian Scott said “We have been very fortunate to secure the services of someone such as Brian Parkinson as our Executive Officer. Brian has a wealth of experience within the greyhound industry as well as having a long history in negotiating complex matters within the political environment. We have also used the services of Robert Lane from SED Advisory who have provided expert advice on areas of governance. Monica Stasiak from South Australia has been of great assistance in helping GCV developing policies. Monica has a legal background as well as a passion for greyhound racing. GCV will continue to seek their

service. GCV is a great opportunity to provide collective representation on behalf of greyhound clubs and their members to key stake holders within the industry.” GRV Chairman, Bernie Carolan welcomed the formation of the GCV. "The establishment of the GCV is a very welcome initiative. I hope it becomes an integral part of Victorian greyhound racing in future, encouraging the 13 race clubs to collaborate more with each other and with GRV and other key stakeholders. This can only generate greater understanding between the many different parties involved in the sport,” Mr Carolan said. GRV CEO, Alan Clayton said race clubs have an increasingly important role to play in greyhound racing: “Our clubs are a vital touch point between GRV and its participants and also between greyhound racing and the broader community. The VGRCA is helping clubs understand the imperative role they have to play in ensuring a sustainable future for our sport.”

Planning Support Workshop Series By Colleen Murphy

The Planning Support Workshop Series concluded at Bendigo on 18 January. Sessions were also held at Geelong, Traralgon & Cranbourne and provided an overview of the requirements of the Statewide planning guidelines that came into effect in August 2017. Brian Parkinson Executive Officer, Greyhound Clubs Victoria facilitated the sessions and independent expert planning consultants presented on key aspects of the scheme, the process for making planning applications and provided an opportunity for participants to ask questions and seek general advice on the new scheme. Participants in attendance have indicated that the sessions were positive and informative. GRV is now working with Greyhound Clubs Victoria to develop additional support and guidance for participants undertaking a planning permit application process.

FEBRUARY 2018

Geoff Dawson named club’s inaugural Patron

G

eoff ‘Smokey’ Dawson has been named the inaugural Patron of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club following last night’s meeting of the Board. The decision was made following Mr Dawson’s announcement at the recent TAB Melbourne Cup that he was retiring from the SGRC Board, signalling the end of his 30-year tenure as Chairman.

“I feel it’s time to slow the pace a little,” said Mr

Dawson, who celebrated his 81st birthday in July.

Mr Dawson joined the SGRC Board in 1979 and became Chairman in 1987 upon the retirement of his father in law, the late Henry Harrison. During Mr Dawson’s chairmanship, a number of major developments and initiatives have been implemented including the opening of Greyhound Entertainment, the construction of the kennel block, rebuild of the track and redevelopment of the Henry Harrison Grandstand.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org. au/pinkcard

FEBRUARY 2018

GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early. For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration. GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.

GAP Testing Dates NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently LOCATION

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October 2016 to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well: • Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au • All sessions for February to April 2018 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month.

Please visit gap.grv.org.au for all the latest GAP news

• To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: • have a current C5 vaccination; and • not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing. • Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session.

Did you know that GAP adopted more than 1,300 greyhounds into the homes of Victorian families in the 2017 financial year? That’s an average of more than three per day!

Please note that from 1 March 2018, the vaccination requirements for entry into GAP are changing, to reduce the chances of future kennel cough outbreaks at GAP. More information is available on Page 16 of this edition of the magazine. From 1 March 2018, to be eligible for pre-entry assessment, your greyhound must have had a vaccination (at least 10 days prior) against: Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis, (C3) within the last 2 ½ years (or within one year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and Kennel cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

It was love at first sight for this greyhound at Seymour’s record-breaking adoption weekend.

Seymour GAP adoption weekend draws huge crowd By Brad Williams

M

ore than one thousand people swarmed through the gates to take advantage of the first ever greyhound adoption weekend held at the Seymour GAP facility on Friday 12 January and Saturday 13 January. People from all over the state came to find a dog they wanted to give a loving home to. A record number of adoptions took place with well over half of the 100 dogs earmarked for adoption finding new homes on the opening day. By the end of the Saturday afternoon 104 greyhounds had been adopted making this a record number. People started lining up out the front each day from around 8.45am eager to be the first in there to find their new lovable companion. GRV CEO Alan Clayton attended on the Friday and was overwhelmed by such a great turnout. Mr Clayton described the event as “similar to a Myer Boxing Day sale. People line up, they queue up and they all run for their favourite dog”.

Also in attendance was GAP ambassador and AFLW player for Carlton Football Club, Laura Attard. Ms Attard held numerous interviews with various television and newspaper media representatives and is a huge advocate for the breed, owning her very own greyhound Macer. Ms Attard claimed the “the dogs are a very misunderstood breed and they are a warm loving animal with the best temperament”. With more than twenty GAP volunteers and staff rostered on over the weekend, the event was such a huge success, so much so that the number of dogs available for the Sunday was not enough to warrant the third day of adoptions. Adoptions manager Larissa Darragh said “the program is continuing to go from strength to strength and we look forward to the next adoption day.” Ms Darragh also said “every day is adoption day at GAP Seymour. People don’t have to wait, we have around 40 new dogs entering the Program this week alone”.

The next GAP Adoption Day is at Bendigo on Sunday, 25 February.

FEBRUARY 2018

Carlton AFLW star and GAP adopter Laura Attard fielded numerous media enquiries on the Friday.

New reference groups to provide industry expertise By Andrew Copley GRV is on the verge of announcing members of its inaugural Breeding & Racing Reference Groups, both of which will be made up of industry participants. The Breeding Reference Group, to be chaired by Terrie Benfield, General Manager - General Counsel, will focus on a range of issues including encouraging quality breeding, recognising quality breeding and creating a clear pathway for new and inexperienced breeders. The Racing Reference Group, which will be chaired by Scott Robins, Acting General Manager - Racing, will discuss topics such as hoop lures and trialling lures, racing injuries and optimising the racing population.

The establishment of these reference groups is intended to compliment the Industry Consultative Group (ICG), a sub-committee of the GRV Board which has a formal role in providing advice to the GRV Board in relation to issues of significance affecting the sport of greyhound racing. The Chief Executive Officer will attend each meeting. The groups are being established as practical reference groups that will work with and provide advice to GRV management. “GRV is committed to supporting the ideas and proposals of the reference groups,” GRV CEO Alan Clayton said. “We are prepared to trial and test new ideas to improve our racing programs and to encourage sustainable breeding.”Both groups will conduct their first respective meetings in March.

The amendments relate to the following GA Rules: GAR 1 – Definition of Prohibited Substances GAR 1 – Norethisterone exemption GAR 83A – Restrictions on Treatment Prior to Racing

Greyhounds Australasia (GA) will introduce a set of Rule changes around animal welfare and administered substances, effective from 1 March. GRV has been advised that the amendments will update and clarify GA’s Rules and in certain instances will bring GA’s Rules in line with other racing codes. Before it considers the adoption of these rules in Victoria, Greyhound Racing Victoria is seeking comment from Victorian participants about GA’s amendments by 16 February.

GAR 79A – Out of Competition Testing GAR 21A – National Ban on Consecutive Days Racing GAR 84A – Treatment Record Requirements To read more about the amendments go to: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/rules-of-racing Please email your submissions on the proposed amendments to GRV at: submissions@grv.org.au Specific questions seeking clarification about the rule changes or their meaning should be emailed to Greyhound Australasia: admin@galtd.org.au

racing at an early age via a number of trainers who lived in the area, and it wasn’t long before he would become a regular at his local track. “I used to slip in the back fence down off View Road. We’d have our bets put on by some very accommodating older punters who were always happy to put the young teenager’s bets on. On my first night there I backed a dog called Perilous from box seven and got the money, so you’re instantly hooked aren’t you? “Things have changed a lot but I have some very fond memories of the late 60’s and the halcyon days in the 70’s at Sandown Park. I had a great enthusiasm from that point on and couldn’t get enough of greyhound racing. I got a chance to train a few myself when I was working full time and really, really enjoyed it.

Culmination of a lifetime’s passion

Neil Brown is the new Sandown GRC Chairman.

By Michael Floyd

T

here a few people in greyhound racing that can boast as diverse a resume in the sport as new Sandown Greyhound Racing Club chairman Neil Brown.

Brown is just the fifth chairman in the club’s decorated 61-year history. He has served on the board since being invited by his predecessor in 2001, and has been on the executive since 2006, his elevation to the Chair following Geoff Dawson’s retirement after 30 years at the helm. “It’s a pretty unique job when you’re following someone like Geoff Dawson, and Henry Harrison before him. They’re a couple of very big names in the sport to follow,” he said.

During his 50-year love affair with greyhound racing, Brown has been involved in almost every aspect of the sport. As well as a former trainer and breeder, Brown has been a registered owner since 1970. He is a former CEO of the Australian and New Zealand Greyhound Association (now Greyhounds Australasia), has worked as form analyst and commentator on RSN – Racing & Sport for the last 21 years, has also worked for Sky Racing and numerous greyhound publications, is the Publicity Officer for Greyhound Clubs Australia (formerly AGRA), and was even the course commentator at Lang Lang coursing club for almost 20 years. He has served numerous industry committees including a decade’s service on the Victorian Greyhound of the Year and Topgun panels, and has been a member of the GRV Victorian Hall of Fame committee since inception in 2006, and in 2000 was awarded the Australian Sport Medal for services to greyhound racing. His passion for the sport and its history has made him one of the industry’s go to people on history related matters, and even when holidaying he’s never too far from a track. “I really love the history and that’s a great privilege just to learn about how they used to do things even way back in the non-proprietary days (when tracks were privately owned). I’ve been lucky enough to see racing in different parts of the world and that’s been fantastic as well. If I was going to Dublin, well I wouldn’t go there without going to the greyhounds, and my wife is quite aware of that! I even found one in Casablanca in Morocco so I thought that was an achievement.” Brown, 64, has been married to Mandy for 41 years and has three children and one granddaughter, and is an avid St Kilda supporter.

FEBRUARY 2018

“I’ve seen the club really prosper in my time, it’s a well-run operation and the actual venue itself has really blossomed. (Former CEOs) Jeff Davies and Matt Corby did a wonderful job renovating the grandstand, and since Greg Miller has joined us we’ve gone up another notch. We’ve done a good job in other areas too, things like social media and stuff – it’s a new direction one that for us old timers is very different to what we knew – and we’re the leaders in developing different products that appeal to the younger punters. Brown has a lifelong passion for greyhound racing. Growing up in Springvale, he was exposed to greyhound

“I trained for 15 years or so and had a few city winners. We won some races at Sandown and Olympic Park and all around country Victoria.”
