CEO’s Update

W

elcome to the March edition of the Monthly. We’ve had some great racing over February as the Australian Cup Carnival got underway, including the Temlee, Rookie Rebel and Zoom Top where Fanta Bale equalled Fernando Bale’s record eight Group 1 victories. And Up Hill Jill and Striker Light became the first female greyhound sprinters to win over half a million dollars in prize money. We also saw the Cranbourne Cup as a superb finale for the second annual Gippsland Carnival. The success of the Gippsland Carnival, I think points the way forward for GRV and the sport in the future given that much of GRV’s reform agenda is complete and generating some very good outcomes. For example, even though swabbing has been tripled since 2016, there has been a very significant drop in recent times in the number of samples returned positive, which we believe is partly driven by improved awareness about issues like feeding guidelines. There is still some work to do but GRV is now a properly working regulator and we are refreshing our Strategic Priorities to reflect this with a focus on returning to business as usual. I believe we should now start thinking hard about where we want the sport to be in the next seven to ten years. All sporting codes keep evolving and greyhound racing is no exception, so we need to keep exploring new ways of improving the racing experience for current punters and participants and to attract new ones.

Turning now to issues off the track, I note that the Greyhound Clubs Victoria Executive and GOTBA have been working with the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources on the draft Code of Practice to ensure that it delivers strong animal welfare outcomes while also being workable for participants on the ground. Speaking of animal welfare, GRV piloted the Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI) from December 2016 to March 2017 and have now made it an ongoing program to support participants if their greyhound suffers a major injury at the track. You can find out more about the GRI in this edition of the Monthly. And following the success of GAP’s Baxter facility in adopting out nearly 500 greyhounds in recent years, many in the Mornington region and outer Melbourne, GAP is now opening a café on the fringe of the Melbourne CBD to promote greyhounds as great pets for urban living to metropolitan Melbourne and there’s a story on it in this issue. Finally, this month marks the final episodes of the popular Greyhounds are My Life video series which has been profiling the people of Victoria’s greyhound racing community and which you can view at grv.org.au/gaml. Two stories were filmed for each of Victoria’s 13 greyhound clubs and released in the run up to each club’s annual Cup or biggest race meeting and, in March, the final four stories focus on The Meadows for the Australian Cup and Horsham for its Cup.

The Gippsland Carnival is one example of trying new approaches and I am keen to hear your ideas about how we can further develop and promote greyhound racing over the next decade.

On behalf of GRV, I thank everyone who took part and we are now developing other projects to help tell more stories of this great sport in Victoria, past and present.

“This is my first Group 1 winner in 25 years in the sport. It’s very special,” a delighted Mark Delbridge said. “We’ve come close before. We had Tomac Bale, who led and got run down in the Adelaide Cup.”

4

Dyna Dean had put the writing on the wall that a middledistance feature trophy was well within his grasp when running a close third to Hecton Bale in the Listed Maidment Memorial over 595m at Sandown in January, beaten only half a length, with champion Fanta Bale splitting the pair. After winning his next two starts over 595m at Sandown, Dyna Dean was a $12 chance from box four in the $75,000 to-thewinner Rookie Rebel, with Melbourne Cup runner-up Chasin’ Crackers the $2.40 favourite from the rails. Dyna Dean came out running to open up a handy early lead over Chasin’ Crackers and the son of Kiowa Mon Manny and Fanta Bale with trainer Robert Britton and handler Peter Riley.

Fanta Bale supreme in Battle of Britton By Gerard Guthrie and Andrew Copley

C

hampion stayer Fanta Bale continued her love affair with The Meadows when defeating boom kennelmate Rippin’ Sam to win the Group 1 Zoom Top (725m) in a hugely-anticipated clash that headlined the opening night of the Australian Cup Carnival. Millionaire Fanta Bale gave Robert Britton his third victory in the invitation-only Zoom Top in the last five years, with the master distance conditioner having gone back-to-back in 2014/15 with Cheetah Zorro and Space Star.

Prue Bale produced a flawless front-running exhibition as he condemned Chasin’ Crackers to another feature race minor placing, scoring by 3.87 lengths in 34.31sec. “I almost missed the race because I was busy watching Reece Mastin sing,” Mark Delbridge’s Lisa laughed. “We also had Allen Makoto, who was run down by Renegade Chief in a Group 1 (Silver Chief), and Flash Of Light, who won a lot of Group races including the Rookie Rebel before it was a Group 1. Mark never thought he would win a Group 1. To win one is such a great pay off for all the hard work.” “We start at 7.00am each day and finish at 4.30pm on a good day and it’s pretty much non-stop either working with the dogs or maintaining the property. If we are racing we sometimes won’t get home until 2am and then we’re up at 7am again the next day. Sean Coulson helps us with taking dogs to race at the provincial tracks.” Dyna Dean gave the Wheeler family a Group 1 race-to-race double, following Fanta Bale’s victory in the Zoom Top over 725m. And there’s every chance Britton will be back again next year with heir apparent Rippin’ Sam, which charged home to finish second in his first test at Group level, however Fanta Bale demonstrated she is in absolutely no hurry to relinquish her crown. The Zoom Top victory completed a remarkable all-distance Australian Cup Carnival treble for Fanta Bale after she won the Rookie Rebel over 600m at the corresponding meeting last year before dropping back to 525m to take out the Australian Cup a fortnight later. It was Fanta Bale’s eighth success at Group 1 level and four have come at The Meadows, with the daughter of 2013 Topgun hero David Bale having announced her arrival in elite company when winning the middle-distance Hume Cup in October 2016. “She’s just a machine. Whether she leads or comes from behind she finds a way,” Robert Britton said. “We’ve never had a dog like her and I just hope it continues. She just keeps doing the right thing in her races every time. I should also recognise the young dog who ran second for us tonight (Rippin’ Sam). We’re really proud of him too.” Fanta Bale started $2.20 favourite from box four in the Zoom Top, with Rippin’ Sam the $4.20 second elect. Fanta Bale came out running and settled in second place behind Queenslander Champagne Sally ($33.80) and after hitting the front in the home straight she forged clear to defeat the late-closing Rippin’ Sam by 2.14 lengths in 42.35sec.

A two-time Group 1 winner in early 2017, victorious in the Golden Easter Egg and National Futurity, Striker Light was having only her fifth start and second over ‘500’ since running sixth in the Melbourne Cup on November 24 when she tackled the best sprinters in the land in the Temlee.

our brood matrons. Lastly, I want to thank my beautiful partner, Cheryl.” While Striker Light was bred by the Weekes Family Syndicate in NSW, Farrugia himself is a keen greyhound breeder, and he said he is looking forward to putting Striker Light to Black Magic Opal once she retires from racing.

But despite a less than ideal preparation, Striker Light turned back the clock twelve months, opening up a massive mid-race lead en route to her third Group 1 victory. “She’s got extreme speed, but I knew for her to open up a big lead like she did there had to be trouble behind her. Watching the race, I was just screaming,” said part-owner George Farrugia. It was Striker Light’s second appearance in the Temlee after she started $3.90 favourite from box one in 2017, when fifth to Lightning Frank. Striker Light was best to begin, and she skipped away to what was ultimately a decisive advantage when there was trouble behind her on the first corner, staving off the strong-finishing Queenslander Slick ($9.90), the first reserve, as she scored by .61 of a length in 30.05sec, her 24th win from 45 starts. The $100,000 winner’s purse took her career prizemoney tally past the $550,000 mark. “I really want to thank five people,” part-owner George Farrugia said. “Kelly and Brett, who had to scratch her from the Ballarat Cup because of a triangle injury, and they’ve done an enormous amount of work with her to get her right. reyhound racing’s second Gippsland Carnival began with the Sale Cup on Boxing Day, the Warragul Cup (January 13), Traralgon Cup (January 26) and the Cranbourne Cup (February 10).

The two-month carnival saw collective record crowd numbers of 5,000 people at the four cup finals, with the four events also being popular amongst wagering customers with strong growth in on-course and off-course wagering. The carnival was a big boost to the Gippsland economy as local produce and services were sourced for all four cups, while an abundance of media was generated both locally and abroad with 1.9 million people reached via relevant Facebook campaigns.

Club Managers Des Dooley (Sale), Steven Clarke (Traralgon), Adrian Scott (Warragul) and Amanda Cameron (Cranbourne) were each presented with a framed picture as a thank you for staging another successful Gippsland Carnival.

he powerful Dailly/Wheeler partnership returned to the spotlight on February 10 when Mossimo Bale followed in the footsteps of his illustrious sire Fernando Bale in the Group 2 Casey Steel Cranbourne Cup Final (520m).

Monster Fish and Mossimo Bale broke clear down the back and Mossimo Bale wore down the gallant Monster Fish in the home straight to score by 1.41 lengths in 30.12sec, at an impressive 14 from 30 strike rate, with a luckless Poke The Bear rattling home to finish third.

The many feature race conquests of Fernando Bale, which was also trained by Andrea Dailly, included country cups successes at Bendigo and Traralgon and Mossimo Bale’s Cranbourne triumph continued the sensational start to his champion father’s stud career.

“He isn’t in the same league as Fernando Bale was but he’s a very good dog, and when he settled second behind Monster Fish I was just hoping he’d be strong enough to run him down, and he was,” Dailly said.

The complexion of the $47,000 to-the-winner Cranbourne Cup changed dramatically with the scratching of superstar Up Hill Jill, which saw Traralgon Cup hero Poke The Bear, another son of Fernando Bale, trained by Seona Thompson, start $2.40 favourite from box eight.

Striving to go one better than at Traralgon, Monster Fish was best to begin and led Mossimo Bale rounding the first turn, while punter’s fancy Poke The Bear was awkwardly positioned, trapped wide outside reserve Jesaulenko.

It wasn’t all bad news for Poke The Bear’s trainer Seona Thompson either, as earlier in the night $1.20 favourite Azkaban took out the $10,000 to-the-winner Backmans Supplies Victoria Cup over 699m, while Big Bubbles, prepared by John Martinovic, claimed the $5000 winner’s purse in The Van Echteld over 311m. The Cranbourne Cup was the fourth and final leg of greyhound racing’s highly successful second annual Gippsland Carnival, which saw attendances up and plenty of media interest on a local and broader level.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Kate Gorman’s Monster Fish, runner-up to Poke The Bear in the Traralgon Cup and then again in the Cranbourne heats, was the $4.40 second elect from box two, while Mossimo Bale was an $11.10 outsider from box six after a 30.26sec heat victory at his Cranbourne debut.

“We call him Batman at home because of the markings on his face, and he’s a little bit more playful than what Fernando Bale was. Fernando was a pure professional and it’s great that his pups are doing so well and that breeders are using him. The Wheelers are still breeding litters but not as many as they used to. It’s great that we can still win the odd big race together.”

MARCH 2018

“We haven’t had as many group winners lately compared to a couple of years ago, so this is a really nice feeling, and it’s even more special because he’s a son of Fernando Bale,” Andrea Dailly said.

New video series: Training tips with Robert Britton

R

obert Britton (pictured above), trainer of million-dollar greyhound Fanta Bale, features in a comprehensive new video series about training greyhounds on Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Care & Standards website.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

The first lot of videos are to be released in early March, and they centre around detecting injuries to greyhounds. They include a standard, basic check which Britton performs on all of his greyhounds two days after a race or trial, and again after the greyhounds’ final exercise session before a race.

8

Britton’s basic check takes about two minutes per dog, and includes an assessment of the toes, stopper bones, wrists, shoulders, metacarpals, monkey muscles, scapula, chest muscles, saddle muscle, triangle muscles, pencil muscles, groin, fibula, hock, back muscles, calves and metatarsals. “I think every trainer should learn a really basic check,” Britton said. “It’s something you should be able to do in about one to two minutes and then be satisfied that the vital areas of a greyhound, which can finish its career, are absolutely spot on. It’s not hard to do, and you’ll pick up 90 per cent of things that have gone wrong, or detect them before they go wrong.” “It (Britton’s checking process) is not what you get at a vet, where they thoroughly go over the greyhound (from) head to toe. It is what I call a basic check for all the vital things, and make sure everything is in place.” Britton said that doing a basic check on a greyhound the day

after a race is premature. “I don’t believe in checking a dog the day after a race, because I think there’s always some general soreness there anyway. I like to let them recover and have a day off. In an ideal world you should check your dog a couple of days after it races, and again after it has finished all its exercise before its next start,” he said. The Lara trainer said it is important to gain an understanding of each greyhound’s pain tolerance level, and then keep just under that when checking for injuries. “You can make most dogs sore if you want to make them sore, so you’ve got to find the dog’s tolerance level. If you push too hard you’ll make him sore. If you find the dog’s tolerance level and keep just below that, you’ll then be able to detect if there’s any soreness. The other thing to note is that the more a greyhound gets checked, the more he gets used to you, and his tolerance level probably goes up,” he said. Britton added that there were some tell-tale signs in detecting injuries through checking, other than a dog simply showing pain or discomfort. “If a dog has got a fresh injury, quite often you’ll feel it when checking in that there’s heat, and there’s a feeling of softness or puttiness, whereas on the other side it is nice and toned, and everything is feeling normal. By checking against the other side, quite often that’s when you feel there’s something a little bit different, and not quite right.”

A trick to checking ‘nervy’ greyhounds for injuries

G

reyhounds are known for their cooperative nature, however this isn’t always the case when it comes to being checked for injuries, according to leading Victorian trainer Robert Britton. “Most dogs are pretty good, but you do get a lot of young dogs that are very, very difficult (in that) they’ve got no pain threshold to start with. Every time you touch them they’ll whimper…every time you cut their toe nails they’ll whimper. But that all comes through practise and persistence,” Britton said. “What you do in that situation is you get over the dog and perform a normal check, but you don’t exert any pressure on the dog the first few times you do it. You don’t apply any force

at all. That way you get them used to you going over them, and it takes any fear away because they know they’re not going to get hurt.” Britton stressed the importance of taking safety precautions whenever you are checking a greyhound for injuries. “You might have to get someone initially, when you’re trying to check a dog that doesn’t like being checked, to hold their head so that you can go over them. And I always check a dog with a muzzle on. Even if he’s your best mate and you know they’ll never bite you, if you find a (sore) spot, you just might frighten them into turning around and grabbing you, so it’s always safety first,” he said.

Lasting legacy: The late Dr Jim Gannon.

greyhound, Britton will always seek a vet’s advice for serious injuries and if there’s a problem he can’t find. “I’ve been in the game a long time and I think I can find most things, but there is sometimes a mystery, such as a dog’s not performing well and you can’t find the problem, so you might need a blood test because there may be another issue. When I believe there’s an issue that I can’t solve myself, a good talk to a vet and a check by a vet can sometimes solve that,” he said.

Victoria has the world’s best greyhound vets By Andrew Copley

R

obert Britton has commended the quality of greyhound vets in Victoria, saying they are second to none, thanks largely to Greyhound Racing Victoria Hall of Fame inductee, the late Dr. Jim Gannon.

“A lot of new people (to greyhound racing) will feel more comfortable going to a vet on a regular basis to get their dog checked, but I can’t emphasise enough, they should also learn their own check so you’re satisfied that your dog is 100 per cent in your own mind.” “Once you start going to a vet all the time, they then start training your dog. Unfortunately, then sometimes you give your greyhound 10 days off or three weeks off and you’re always interrupted, and you’re not actually getting any work done. Eventually you can become confused (with regard to) what’s serious and what’s not.”

“We’re very lucky in Victoria, we’ve got the best (greyhound) vets in the world. A lot of them were trained by Dr. Jim Gannon, and that’s the legacy he left, in that we can be really confident that we can go to these vets and they really know what they’re talking about,” Britton said.

L

eading greyhound trainer Robert Britton insists that knowing your greyhound well and closely observing his or her movements is an imperative aspect of detecting injuries, particularly after a race or trial. “Checking is not everything…observation is also very important. In other words, the day after a dog races, the next morning you should watch it very carefully. Watch the way it gets off its bed, the way it goes out into the empty yards. You learn more doing that than you ever do checking a dog, if you know his habits,” Britton said.

First Aid with Dr. Chris Boemo

“Usually when there’s lameness, it’s reasonably serious. It can be something minor such as a spike wound or a cut or something like that, but if you learn to do a basic check, you’ll learn pretty quickly where that soreness, or that lameness, is coming from.” “If it’s structural, such as a bone or anything like that, it is quite serious and that’s when you’ve probably got to get an x-ray or get your greyhound checked by a vet,” he said.

Britton said any lameness in a greyhound should be treated with the utmost caution.

MARCH 2018

“If your dog gets up normally, goes out and he’s spritely on all four legs, there’s usually not a lot wrong with them. But if you can see that they’re slightly depressed or they’re not walking

with the same zest - it (detecting an injury) can be everything from simply that or you could see some lameness.”

The café, which will be based in King St, Melbourne, is the first in Melbourne to have a greyhound theme and unlike most other food and beverage venues, will be able to have dogs allowed inside the premises as well as an outdoor area featuring decking and grass.

10

The café has been built to promote to people in metropolitan Melbourne our beautiful greyhounds and increase the interest in greyhound adoptions. The GAP café is based a short walk from Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Chetwynd St offices in West Melbourne and will be officially opened in March. With GAP’s headquarters based in Seymour in rural Victoria, GRV CEO Alan Clayton said it was important GAP was visible in the city, as evidenced by the Baxter facility in south east Melbourne.

The café, which is situated just opposite Flagstaff gardens, has both an indoor and outdoor area for dogs and their owners and will be serving critically-acclaimed Campos roaster coffee sure to appeal to any coffee-loving Melburnian. it is the latest initiative from GRV to focus on encouraging greyhound adoption. With a record 1314 greyhounds adopted through its Greyhound Adoption Program in the 2016/17 financial year, GRV’s focus has been on ensuring the best possible life for greyhounds before, during and after their racing careers. “We have seen record numbers of greyhound adoptions in the past two years and word is getting out about the appeal of these beautiful dogs as pets,” Mr Clayton said. “There is a real community of greyhound owners and the GAP café is a great meeting place for this community as well as other dog owners.”

“Since opening in 2015, we have adopted almost 500 dogs from Baxter alone,” Mr Clayton said. “Given the large number of people in metropolitan Melbourne, we want to promote our dogs to the largest audience possible.” Mr Clayton said the café was another example of GRV’s focus on animal welfare as its overriding priority. “It can be an adjustment for greyhounds not only to go from life as racing animals to life as pets. Most of them also have to adjust from being based in rural and regional Victoria to suddenly living in metropolitan areas,” Mr Clayton said. “This café will make it easier for people to come into contact with our greyhounds.” (From left) Sean Stanton, GAP Re-Homing Manager; Dave the GAP dog; Leah Handy, QLD GAP Manager; Vincene Overs, QLD Media and Communications Officer; Gavin Goble, GRV General Manager, Animal Welfare; Dr Ann-Marie Boyd, QLD Animal Welfare Manager; Alan Clayton, GRV CEO and Zoe (Alan’s adopted dog).

Trainer sad to say goodbye

Under the guidance of trainer Dawn Johnstone (below), Waterfront went from being a talented racetrack performer to a cat-friendly pet.

By Andrew Copley It was with a heavy heart that Boisdale trainer Dawn Johnston finally farewelled her greyhound Waterfront to the Greyhound Adoption Program on 20 February. Waterfront was purchased at GRV’s 2014 Ready 2 Race Sales by a Croc Media syndicate comprising 10 ‘Off The Bench’ radio competition winners and managed by media personality John ‘Dr. Turf’ Rothfield. He raced 53 times for 10 wins and 15 placings, earning $21,480 in prize money until his career came to an end after a serious hock injury almost two years ago. Known off the racetrack as Danny, Waterfront had three pins inserted into his leg, which were initially supposed to be removed after a three months period; however complications arose. “After the three months his hock was X-rayed and it was decided to leave the pins in a bit longer as it hadn’t healed as well as we expected so just to make sure we left it in,” Dawn said. His pins where removed in October 2016. After a few days he was still walking with a limp, and I was very concerned. I called Des (Fagan), my life-long vet, and he said we needed to X-ray his leg again. The news was not good as it had cracked again, and the pins had to be reinserted.” Waterfront’s recovery continued with multiple five-hour round trips to Cranbourne for X-rays, and it wasn’t until January this year that his pins were finally removed. “Danny was such a good patient he was introduced to my cat and my bed, which he immediately fell in love with,” Dawn added. “He is also great with children as my seven-year-old nephew has taken him for numerous walks and they’ve spent many hours together.” While a family has quickly laid claim to adopting Danny once he has been through GAP’s foster care program, a sad Dawn said she will remain on stand-by to take him back at the faint chance that things don’t work out.

GAR 1 – Definition of Prohibited Substances

MARCH 2018

The amendments relate to the following GA Rules: GAR 1 – Norethisterone exemption GAR 83A – Restrictions on Treatment Prior to Racing

Victorian greyhound racing participants have been given more time to comment on Greyhound Australasia’s (GA) proposed Rule changes regarding animal welfare and administered substances. The consultation period has been extended by three weeks to ensure that participants have enough time to consider the rule changes and provide feedback. It will conclude on Friday 9 March. GA released the proposed amendments last month. Greyhound Racing Victoria is seeking comment from Victorian participants before we consider adopting these rules in Victoria. We are also working with GA to prepare a series of frequently asked questions that will explain the Rule changes in more detail.

News By Sandra Reed President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.

Every year there are more industry issues and regulator proposals to address, as well assisting individual members with personal racing related issues and attending to general business. In 2017 and 2018, members of the committee collectively donated many hundreds of hours of work on the draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds, in the form of phone calls, writing reports and attendance at meetings/workshops conducted by DEDJTR, GRV and various other departments. It has been all-consuming, however we are in sight of the finishing line and hope to have the final issues addressed and fixed in the next month. It is worth noting that the work on the draft Code of Practice conducted by GOTBA Victoria will be to the benefit of all participants, not just GOTBA members. We are able to offer insights and advice that other organisations, committees and groups cannot, which is why GOTBA’S work is so critical.

We plan to run Code of Practice seminars for members in preparation for its implementation so that people have a good understanding of what is required. Because of our efforts, it will be a much more user-friendly document and greatly reduced in size than was originally proposed. However, it will require more diligence in record keeping and understanding of your obligations as a person in charge of greyhounds.

This year’s Supernite at Sandown with the running of the GOTBA CUP is planned for April 12. We would like as many members as possible to attend to celebrate the achievements of the GOTBA. This should be a most enjoyable evening where we have sponsors who donate to our organization for the privilege of having a race named after their business, and where Sandown invite four people from each sponsorship to enjoy dinner and drinks, so that we are able to fundraise the whole of the sponsorship monies.

WHAT IS THE GOTBA? Website: gotbavictoria.wildapricot.org General enquiries: gotbav@gmail.com Phone: 0423 357 620

To encourage as many members as possible to attend on the night we are offering members the possibility of winning $1000. To be eligible for entry all you need to do is book in for dinner on the night of April 12, be a paid-up member of the GOTBA, and be in attendance for the draw after Race 8. On the Supernite we will also be having an auction for the service of a prominent stud dog, and have been fortunate enough to have donations of six four-week courses of breaking in, two from each of the following businesses: Keyon Kennels, Carbrakay kennels and Doctors Kennels. We plan to run a silent auction for each individual course and information on how to bid will be on our website about mid-march. So please come along and enjoy an evening of fun with many door prizes and the presentation of Metropolitan Stud Dog and Brood Bitch of the Year and Victorian Brood Bitch and Stud Dog of the Year. Come and meet the committee, bring along your friends, maybe you would like to sponsor a race? If so, please contact our secretary through the details on our website. Sometimes members contact us wanting to know why we haven’t attended to a problem they have had to do with racing their dogs. We are always ready to help members, however, first of all they need to let us know what the problem is. We are not always abreast of everything that happens at the race track and your feedback is much appreciated. So please, if you experience difficulty at the track and want our assistance, send us an email or call so that we can assist you to set things right. The committee is proud of the work done on behalf of our members and also for greyhound racing and all participants. As all participants benefit from the work we do, we implore you to support us by becoming a member of the GOTBA. The more members we have the more respect and engagement we have with the people who make decisions about our future.

stand-down period remains in force). This rule means there is steward oversight of the re-vet and the potential to swab the greyhound, and would require a national rule change to change this.

Victorian greyhound racing participants should be aware that in cases where an On-Track Veterinarian (OTV) has stood down a greyhound, a veterinarian in clinical practice cannot over-ride the stand-down period imposed by the OTV by certifying that the greyhound is fit to race.

Rule 73 Greyhound suffering injury

Under the relevant rule GAR 73(3), an ‘officiating veterinary surgeon’ (interpreted as the OTV actually on-track) can re-examine (“re-vet”) a greyhound and determine that the initial injury has resolved, so effectively revoking the stand-down period.

(2) Subject to Rule 73(3), an owner or trainer shall not permit the greyhound to compete in an Event or satisfactory trial during the period of incapacitation.

This precludes: 1) a veterinarian in clinical practice (even if they were an OTV at other times) making this determination; and 2) any veterinarian (including an OTV) simply reducing the stand-down period; in other words the greyhound must be either cleared as fit to race or not cleared (so the original

A Good thing

In 2014, Anderson and his wife Mandy welcomed their second child Brodie into the world, becoming a little brother to Caitlyn, who is now five. Brodie was born with an umbilical hernia, problems with his intestines and further complications with his intestines being fused together. He developed a series of infections over his first twelve months which at one stage had him fighting for his life. “For the first year of Brodie’s life we were constantly in and out the Royal Children’s Hospital. As a parent it was enough to make us think twice about having more children because we couldn’t bear to go through it again. In saying all that, the staff at the hospital were wonderful and there is no better place than the Royal Children’s for a sick child,” Anderson said. Now three years old Brodie is showing no signs of slowing down following his corrective surgery. “It was a really hard time for our family and to come out the other side means we are luckier than many other families,” Anderson said.

epunga Blazer has hit Meticulous lodge and he has breeder, owner and Hall of Fame inductee Barry Smith more than excited about his future.

The son of Australia’s leading sire, Barcia Bale and Mepunga Nicky retired a winner of 11 races from 22 starts (five minor placings) and $161,630 in prize money with his biggest career win being the 2017 Group One Maturity Classic at The Meadows. Australia’s premier stud master Paul Westerveld showed immediate interest in Mepunga Blazer following his first city win at Sandown where he stopped the clock in a best of the night 29.23 seconds.

available to breeders beginning this month. Joining Mepunga Blazer in retirement is one of greyhound racing’s most durable campaigners, 2016 Group 2 McKenna Memorial winner, Bruce Tycoon. Bred by Charlie Micallef, Bruce Typhoon’s racing career began on 19 December, 2014 and saw him greet the starter 130 starts for 36 wins, 39 minor places and $271,765 in prize money. “He’s always got a shine in his coat and I find that with a lot of good dogs that race a long time, they don’t stress. Fanta Bale is exactly the same,” said trainer Robert Britton. “I’m certain at times he wasn’t the best dog in the race, but he would eye ball them and they’d just give in.”

“I have been around a long time and I am confident that he will succeed as a sire. I am really excited about what he can do,” owner and breeder Barry Smith said. “His breeding was a huge reason behind Paul’s interest. Both of his parents are group one winners and the line has been successful for 50 years,” Smith said. Mepunga Blazer’s bloodlines include Premier Fantasy, Go Wild Teddy, Brett Lee, the great Temlee and of course Barcia Bale. “His lines are outstanding, and I don’t think there is a better line going around,” Smith said. Smith believes that Mepunga Blazer’s speed and his hardchasing ability is a huge reason to breed from him.

“I already have a couple of broodies waiting to come in season so I can use him. The Meadows: Automated Lure run up Q & A Q) What changes are being made to the run up of the lure? Greyhound Racing Victoria are implementing a fully automatic lure run up. The automation of the lure will ensure a seven second run up of the lure before every race for consistency. Lure drivers will still control the lure throughout the race. Q) Why are there changes being made to the run up of the lure? The University of Technology Sydney (UTS), who assisted in the design of the new Horsham track, handed down recommendations as part of the UTS report identifying Optimal Greyhound Track Design for Safety and Welfare. The purpose of the switch to an automated function is to provide more consistency for the greyhounds because the lure will always be in the

same position when they come out of the boxes. Additionally, the integrity function will be boosted with the constancy that will come with the automated lure run up. Q) What trials have been conducted with the automated lure run up? The GRV Racing Department have been working with SEW Eurodrive since November 2017 to automate the lure run up. More than 800 trials have been conducted at The Meadows with positive feedback being received from Club/GRV lure drivers. Q) When will this commence for races? After gaining approval from the Integrity Department the system will be implemented for races at The Meadows beginning Wednesday 7 March for a two-month trial period.

ut Of Range (Fernando Bale – Nicki Fields), bred at Langwarrin by Darren Puleio, captured the second Group 1 of his career with a stunning performance in the National Derby (520m) at Wentworth Park on 3 February. The Seona Thompson-trained 2018 Silver Chief winner appeared to slip at the start, then checked off the heels of the early leader down the back straight before showing an enormous burst of power in the home straight to win in 30.20sec. Time honours on the night went the way of the Anthony Azzopardi-trained Blue Sky Riot (Barcia Bale – Ready To Riot), who took out the Group 1 National Futurity (520m) in a blistering 29.55sec over the early front-runner, fellow Victorian Slingshot Gypsy (Robert Britton). Both races carried a first prize of $75,000.

Adoption Day at Bendigo By Suzanne McKenzie

T

hirty-four greyhounds found new homes at GAP’s Adoption Day, held at the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association on 25 February.

About 170 dog lovers from the Bendigo area and from further afield attended the adoption day. One of the first dogs to find a home was Judd who was snapped up by Erin Stebbins and David Steven. The couple, who both grew up near Ocean Grove and have known each other since Prep, decided it was time to get a pet, now that they have a home in Oakleigh with a secure backyard. “She is obsessed with dogs. All her friends are getting married and adopting greyhounds,” David said.

“I was looking for a dog with lots of energy and this one is definitely friendly and lively.” His girls aged 10 and 11 were already giving their new pet a good work out, walking Swallow in circles and up and down ramps. Boisterous was the motto of the day. Jack Wild from Rowville was looking for “the most boisterous, rowdiest dog I can get”, choosing Sable as a replacement for the family’s elderly whippet who was recently laid to rest. Paul McDermott from Melton was also looking for a “boisterous dog with lots of character” to occupy his older children, aged 16, 18 and 21, and chose Tiger. Alena Matthews, however, was looking for something more placid and chose Sweet, who will almost certainly be re-named Bella. Bella is going to spend time digging in the garden with Alena, enjoying inner city life half the time, then spending time in Euroa at their holiday house.

endigo. Wednesday. January 10. Race two. Box three. Relief.

These were the nine words Scott Manning (a trainer for just three months) used to describe the first winner he trained after more than 40 years in the sport. New Apollo is the greyhound behind his happiness. “I just felt relief at first. Relief that I can actually train,” Scott Manning said. The Manning family, made up of Scott’s grandfather Norm and father Peter, have been greyhound educators for more than 45 years running the Manning Greyhound Complex in Bendigo.

“I am the only Manning to have a trainer’s licence.” With community inclusion and a constant search for young participants at the heart of their business, the Manning Greyhound Complex and the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association have been supporters of local charities Give Me 5 For Kinds and Beyond Blue. A Chippy by trade, Manning was able to utilise his work on the tools and upbringing in the greyhounds to revamp their kennel property which includes a GRV registered trial track and a domestic boarding kennel. “Greyhounds have been my life for so many years, even during my time as a Chippy it was good to have the dogs to go back to,” Manning said. The Manning family’s love for greyhound racing doesn’t stop

With a new found understanding and appreciation for the racing side of greyhounds, rather than just the education, Manning believes he will never be able to step away from training. “Training and educating work hand in hand, I have a better understanding of what both race dogs and educators need now,” Manning said. “Even when we get busy with breakers I still want to keep my toe in training. I am interacting with so many great people at the races, and watching a dog go around that you have put work into is pretty special.” Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association Manager Troy Harley is one of those great people and was the driving force behind Manning applying for his trainer’s licence. “Troy has been great to me and has given me the confidence I needed to start training greyhounds. I have this new appreciation for greyhound racing and I have Troy to thank for that,” Manning said. Although New Apollo was not the first greyhound Manning trained, having begun his training journey with Tinted Blue who has had three starts, New Apollo has and will continue to create plenty more firsts for Manning. New Apollo is a winner of three consecutive races from seven starts. After starting out her career over the shorts at Bendigo, Manning decided to step her up in distance which resulted in immediate success. New Apollo’s maiden win was an early birthday gift for Manning who celebrated his birthday the following day. “Even though I was relieved to have won the race, I was so excited,” Manning said. Manning utilises his trial track to also train his racing greyhounds. “On the track we have boxes that start on a bend and a straight, I think this helps the racing dogs because I can prepare them for whatever start they will face in a race.” For now, Manning will continue to train his three racing greyhounds as well as operating the Manning Greyhound Complex, enjoying every single one of his firsts.

meeting of the 2018 season to be an all-maiden meeting at Benalla on Sunday, 29 April. For more information go to ncavictoria.com.

Peter Craig, President of the National Coursing Association of Victoria, said it was a great way to give the coursing code some exposure. “We will be putting some greyhounds out of the slips on the front straight so people can have a close look,” Craig said. “There are a lot of trainers around Victoria who have never been coursing, so this is a good way to get a few of them to start thinking about it and to learn about all the benefits. I’ll be there on the night in case people want to ask any questions.” Longwood will be hosting a Catch on to Coursing meeting at Longwood on Sunday, 15 April with the NCAV’s first official Colin and Annette Kampman with Tally Ho Billy

Watch: Coursing tips with Peter Craig at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/video

Annette, who lives in Hawkesdale near Warrnambool, is well known around the tracks for the mileage she clocks up with her husband Colin during the five month coursing season. There are no coursing clubs near Annette, so almost every weekend during the season she happily travels to compete in Benalla, Werribee, Longwood or Lang Lang. Along the way she accumulated points to finish at the top of the 2017 NCA Victoria table.

A

nnette Kampman took out double honours at the National Coursing Association of Victoria’s awards night, winning Owner and Trainer of the Year.

Annette has been racing greyhounds for several decades and began coursing in the 1990s. Her most successful greyhound to date is probably Tally Ho Billy who won the JN Smith Memorial in 2017.

“She has big strong dogs that are particularly well suited to coursing,” he said. “The dogs have to run 3 X 300 metre races, they have to have the speed to win, then recover and go again, and they have to do that over the whole season.” Annette says her dogs love to run and chase, probably because they loved chasing squeaky toys and drag lures when they were pups. She got into coursing when one of her dogs broke his hock racing on a circular track. He was rested for 12 months and rather than go back to the regular circuit, Annette tried him on a straight track. Her dogs are also regulars on the straight track at Healesville. “My dogs are used to going in a straight line,” she laughs, “none of them are world-beaters but that’s the good thing about coursing - it gives them a go at something else and I think the straight track is easier on them.” An enthusiastic advocate for coursing, Annette will soon be hooking up the dog trailer and filling up the tank for the 2018 season.

feel one of our female greyhounds is worthwhile breeding with based on her racetrack capabilities and her temperament - and obviously when she comes on-season.” The Martinovics have bred numerous city winners over the years, including former group class dog Clockwork, and believe one of the keys to their sustained success is the size of the runs they house their pups in.

Kings of the longshots

“We used to rear our pups in 100 metre runs but we found they injured themselves a lot, so we cut them back to 60 metres. Our runs are about seven metres wide, which is about twice the width of a lot of other people’s runs. We find that the extra width gives them a bit more area to turn, slow down and brake, meaning less strain on their wrists and metacarpals. We occasionally free-gallop our pups in bigger runs, but it’s always under supervision,” Martinovic said.

We’ve had a bit of luck with box draws (lately) and things are going our way.” The Martinovics, who along with brother Joseph make up the Bachelor Club Syndicate, are retired farmers who breed and train an average of one litter every year. John and I have been breeding and training greyhounds fulltime for the past 12 or 13 years. “Understanding that greyhounds are all different, just like human beings are all different, is so important. For instance, we get them playing with a toy or a squeaker from about six months of age. Some are interested in grabbing on to it and some aren’t. You need to work out what is going to make them grab that toy and really want it, whether it means tying it to a rope or working with them one-on-one,” Martinovic said. Martinovic added that understanding each greyhound’s individual personality is also critical once they begin trialling and racing. “Some greyhounds drink only a little bit straight after a race, but rehydration is critical after a run so you need to work out how to get that dog to drink. For instance, he or she might have a special place where they prefer to drink such as in the trailer. You’ve got to find out what works for each dog to get the very best out of them,” Martinovic said. “Over the years I have noticed some people will offer their dogs a drink after a trial and then rush to load them in the trailer and drive away. We always offer our dogs a second drink back at the car or trailer after a trial or race. Some dogs still won’t drink much in that situation because they are side-tracked by things like the sound of the lure going, so when that happens we drive down the road away from the noise of the track and offer them a drink again. It’s all about giving your dogs the best care you can, and we’ve found that this works more often than not.”

Breeder says ‘no’ to handling pups by collars By Andrew Copley

A

ccomplished breeder David Geall believes a small contributing factor assists in rearing winners.

While established greyhound breeders agree that a combination of quality bloodlines, a balanced diet, regular handling and the right amount of exercise is vital to achieving sustainable success, Geall says the way in which people handle their pups shouldn’t be underestimated. “One of the things we don’t do, which is a little unorthodox and something I call a one percenter, is that we don’t put collars on our pups, but we teach our pups to walk on a lead and collar from the start as handling a 12 month old pup by a collar tends to spook them. Most pups don’t like being handled purely by a collar (without a lead), and it can lower their confidence and make it harder to break them in,” Geall said. Geall and wife Rose breed one litter per year and, as well as reigning Topgun winner Up Hill Jill, have bred a number of talented greyhounds including group class pair Sir Charleton and Striker Klinsman, along with Newcastle Ranger, One Step Beyond, Nayla Swift and El Rio, the latter having 18 wins from 100 starts. Their latest exciting prospect is Up Hill Jill's younger half brother, My Redeemer, who recently won the Cranbourne Vic Breeders final (520m) and has also won at Wentworth Park (520m).

about eight months we get them to chase a synthetic squeaker on a rope, every six weeks. We find that this is important in teaching them the enjoyment of chasing something and is the first step in their education. We have found through experience that doing this any more than about once every six weeks, they can lose interest. We stop doing this at eight months of age because by that time the instinct and enjoyment to chase is psychologically embedded in them.” “At about 14 months we send our pups away to Kevin McNamara to be broken-in, but before that we have a pre-break in period of about four weeks, which starts at 12-13 months of age. We do a number of things with them during those four weeks including taking them to viewing kennels at a trial track to watch other dogs trial, then I give them two goes in a bullring to encourage them to chase the lure in a circle and, once they are happy doing that, I give them two hand-slips behind the lure on a trial track.” “We find that by putting this time and effort into our pups makes them a lot easier for the educator to break them in and, while I’m not sure what our strike rate is, almost every pup we have bred in the past five years has made it to the track and won.” Geall is also very particular about what he feeds his pups and acknowledged the importance of human interaction.

“The way we rear has come about from trial and error, and in 18 litters we’ve bred, 17 litters of pups have reached the race track and won,” Geall said.

“We feed our pups meat from the butcher with a high fat content, kibble, sardines and a calcium/vitamin supplement powder for dinner. They also get milk and kibble for breakfast each morning,” he said.

Further articulating the Gealls’ success is the number of winners two of their current brood matrons have produced.

“We handle and play with them twice a day at feeding time and we ramp up the handling during the time they are 12-16 months of age. That’s where they spend plenty of time on a collar and lead wherever they go, be it when we take them to the empty-out yards, going to the bullring, the breakers or wherever,” he said.

“Of the 24 Where’s Demonica’s pups that went to the breakers, 23 so far have won, while 27 out of 36 pups out of So Faithful have also won races,” Geall said. The Lara couple have confidence in their rearing methods, which has helped to get a winning formula.

For instance, at 12 weeks of age we wean them off their mother and move them to a paddock ¾ acre in size. From three months up until

Up Hill Jill, who is by Premier Fantasy out of Where’s Demonica and is trained by Geall, became Australia’s first female greyhound sprinter to earn half a million dollars in prize money after winning a heat of the Cranbourne Cup in February. 1 point

MARCH 2018

“We are extremely regimented with what we do with our greyhounds between 3-13 months of age.

Geall also encourages owners to handle and play with their pups as much as possible so that by the time they are 12 months old and ready for the next chapter in their education, they are walking on a lead happy and confident, making it much easier for the breaker to do their job.

APPLY FOR DNA TODAY! GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early. For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows:

Full details at: grv.org.au/vicgreys

GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.

For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Did you know that GAP adopted more than 1,300 greyhounds into the homes of Victorian families in the 2017 financial year? That’s an average of more than three per day!

*NEW GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

Welfare Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare

f) The OTV may require that the greyhound receive overnight veterinary care at an emergency veterinary clinic, and this will be funded as part of the initial veterinary consultation.

Greyhound Recovery Initiative re-launched February saw the launch of GRV’s new ongoing program to provide funding towards the off-track veterinary treatment of greyhounds seriously injured at a race meeting; the Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI). The new GRI has some significant differences to the original pilot program ran in December 2016 to March 2017, offering more options and better support for greyhounds injured at the track. In particular, the new GRI, subject to the funding criteria set out below, covers all reasonable costs for the off-track veterinary treatment, up to a total of $1,500 including GST (“the capped amount”) for a greyhound admitted into the program.

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

The participant in charge of the greyhound may take the greyhound to any Victorian veterinarian(s). Funding will be in two stages and can either be by way of rebate (reimbursement of the participant) or payment directly to the veterinarian(s): 1. Stage 1 - initial off-track veterinary consultation (which includes immediate treatment, such as pain relief, necessary to ensure the welfare of the greyhound during this stage). 2. Stage 2 - subsequent treatment of an eligible injury. Eligibility for stage 1 funding – initial off-track veterinary consultation The purpose of this consultation is to obtain an accurate diagnosis of the injury, particularly where the On-Track Veterinarian (OTV) suspects that an eligible injury has been suffered but requires confirmation by X-ray. GRV will fund all reasonable costs of the initial veterinary consultation up to the capped amount, regardless of the diagnosis, prognosis and assessment as to eligibility for subsequent treatment. a) The injury must have been sustained during a Victorian race or coursing meeting, or during post-race or qualifying trials, on a track that is staffed by a GRV OTV. b) In the professional opinion of the OTV, the greyhound is suffering, or is suspected to be suffering, from an “eligible injury” where euthanasia on-track is being considered by the OTV on humane grounds.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

c) An eligible injury is a serious and potentially careerending injury that is:

32

• a bone fracture that is not a single metacarpal or metatarsal fracture, a toe (phalangeal and/or sesamoid) fracture or a tail fracture; or • a joint dislocation above and including the wrist or hock, so does not include a metacarpal-phalangeal or metatarsalphalangeal dislocation, a toe dislocation or a tail dislocation; or • a complete Achilles tendon rupture. d) The OTV must determine that the injury can be treated with an acceptable welfare outcome. e) The OTV must be able to stabilise the injury and administer appropriate pain relief at the track.

g) The participant in charge must arrange transport for the greyhound to the initial off-track veterinary consultation, arrange appropriate care and rehabilitation for the greyhound while it recovers, and will remain responsible for re-homing the greyhound (see below re GAP). Eligibility for stage 2 funding – subsequent treatment There are three possible outcomes following the initial veterinary consultation: 1. The injury is confirmed by the veterinarian to be an eligible injury: GRV will contribute funding, up to the capped amount, towards all reasonable costs for the initial offtrack veterinary consultation and all reasonable veterinary costs for the subsequent treatment. Following treatment, the greyhound must be retired as a pet or for breeding purposes. In the event that the greyhound recovers sufficiently to return to racing, the GRV must be reimbursed for the treatment costs (excluding the initial veterinary consultation) prior to the greyhound’s first nomination. 2. The injury is found by the veterinarian to be not eligible and/or the participant wants to fund the treatment themselves: GRV will fund all reasonable costs, up to the capped amount, for the initial off-track veterinary consultation, but will not fund any subsequent veterinary costs. 3. The injury is more serious than the on-track diagnosis: Where the prospects of recovery with an acceptable welfare outcome are poor, such that euthanasia is in the opinion of the veterinarian in the best interests of the greyhound, GRV will fund all reasonable costs, up to the capped amount, for the initial off-track veterinary consultation and associated necessary treatment. Administration The OTV must complete Part A of the GRI Admission Form in consultation with a GRV Steward at the track and email it to GRV at gri@grv.org.au with the OTV ‘Veterinary Examination Details’ form. The participant in charge of the greyhound must take the entire GRI Admission Form, as well as the OTV ‘Veterinary Examination Details’ form, to the off-track veterinarian for the initial consultation and any subsequent treatment. Once the off-track veterinarian has treated the greyhound, they must complete Part B of the GRI Admission Form. The complete form (PART A and B) must be submitted to GRV to apply for payment. If a rebate is sought by the participant, the GRI Participant Rebate Application Form (PART C) must also be submitted with tax invoice(s) and receipt(s). If direct payment of veterinary invoices by GRV is sought, veterinary invoices must be addressed to GRV. Priority Entry to GAP After recovery from the injury, the owner will be responsible for re-homing the greyhound if it is not kept as a pet or for breeding purposes. All greyhounds admitted into the GRI will be granted priority access to a standard GAP Preentry Assessment if requested by the participant. As per normal practice, the greyhound must pass this Pre-entry Assessment and be in sound health (i.e. must not be lame) to be accepted into GAP.

HAS YOUR GREYHOUND BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED AT THE TRACK?

ASK THE ON-TRACK VET about GRV funding* for a full injury assessment off-track Further funding* may be available for treatment of eligible injuries.

Make an informed decision about the future of your greyhound *GRV’s new Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI) program

MICROCHIPPING AGE TO CHANGE from 1 April 2018 Due to changes to legislation in Victoria that exempts racing greyhounds in Victoria from the requirement to be registered with local council, GRV is required to move the age of microchipping from the second puppy vaccination (10-16 weeks) to the first puppy vaccination (6-8 weeks).

GRV has commenced work on amendments to FastTrack to facilitate this change by 1 April 2018. Under the new system, when the vet vaccinates your puppies at 6-8 weeks of age, they will also microchip the puppies at the same time, instead of waiting until the 10-16 week vaccination. There will be no additional work or requirements for participants; but you should be aware of the changes.

• 12 March - Ballarat (Day), Traralgon (Twilight)

Don’t forget that changes to GAP-Pre-entry vaccination requirements commence this month. If you ae getting your greyhound vaccinated for GAP, please let your veterinarian know it is for GAP, and not just for a normal C5 vaccination.

• 15 March - Sale (Day), Warrnambool (Night)

• 14 March - Bendigo (Twilight) • 16 March - Healesville (Day) • 20 March - Horsham (Twilight), Geelong (Twilight) • 21 March - The Meadows (Day) • 22 March - Shepparton (Twilight), Sandown (Night)

• C3 vaccination (Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 vaccination was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements, please contact GRV. GRV's Animal Welfare team will be attending race meetings in March to deliver a short presentation to provide further detail about these changes. The schedule for these presentations is as follows:

GRV's Animal Welfare team's March racetrack visits will begin at Ballarat on 12 March.
