CEO’s Update
W
e’ve been treated to some great racing over the past month, especially at the Australian Cup Carnival where Hecton Bale won the Cup in great style and signalled that he could be the sport’s next big star. Another Carnival highlight was Fanta Bale taking out the Australian Super Stayers in a champion run by a great champion, making her the winner of the most prize money in the sport’s history. And Jimmy Newob pulled off a great win over regular rival Aston Dee Bee at the Horsham Cup on 10 March, in front of one of the largest crowds ever for the event. The Horsham Cup was also marked by the release of the last two episodes of Greyhounds Are My Life, a 25-part video series that profiled some of the people of Victoria’s greyhound racing community and you can read more about it in this issue. Also covered this month is the opening of the GAP Café in West Melbourne and GAP’s fourth Greyhound Community Day, the biggest one yet and which found new homes for 22 greyhounds. The Greyhound Family Fun Days program is now underway again with Victoria’s greyhound racing clubs hosting a range of kid-friendly activities across the state over the Easter school break including the ‘Greyhound Games’ featuring soccer, hopscotch and tug of war competitions and more. The Family Fun Days are free, and your local club can tell you when they will be hosting one for your community. Turning now to industry development, I am pleased to announce that as part of our approach to contained breeding, litter numbers are now on the rise again with 542 litters whelped over the past 12 months. Also, very encouraging is that over the last three months we continue to see a reduction in the percentage of swabs taken return positive results.
To help do so, GRV has convened Breeding and Racing Reference Groups which held their inaugural meetings last month. These participant-driven forums are operational in their focus and will help build consensus on proposals to improve breeding and racing outcomes, provide feedback about our procedures, processes and practices and raise and discuss topical issues or concerns. Some of the issues they are expected to discuss include new contained breeding strategies and new approaches to motivating and training dogs to chase including a review of the current hoop arm and lure. Another new initiative introduced last month is a series of training tips videos, hosted by one of the country’s leading trainers, Robert Britton. The first episodes cover detecting injuries to greyhounds and you can watch at them at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au. I would like to pass on my thanks to Robert Britton’s amazing greyhound Fanta Bale for all the great racing and enjoyment she has brought us all, and I wish her a happy retirement. She is a once-in-a-generation champion with a big heart, and you can read our tribute to her on page nine of this publication. Looking ahead, the first National Greyhound Adoption Day will be held on Sunday April 29 where all the GAPs throughout Australia will come together to celebrate everything greyhound and promote adoption opportunities. You can find out more at nationalgreyhoundadoptionday.com.au. And on the track, the Warrnambool Cup heats kick off in late April, leading up to the Cup itself on 2 May. And finally, a reminder that the 2018 coursing season gets underway on 15 April at Longwood, just outside Euroa.
APRIL 2018
While these are great outcomes, we cannot afford to take them for granted as we plan the long-term growth of the sport.
I often think of coursing as Victoria’s 14th greyhound racing club and I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen true grassroots racing to catch on to coursing.

anta Bale won an Australian record nine Group 1s when snaring the Australian Super Stayers (725m) on Australian Cup night, and in doing so took her prize money earnings up to $1,365,175, surpassing Fernando Bale’s record of $1,299,370. Around 3,000 people attended The Meadows’ night of nights, of which a large portion were there specifically to cheer on Fanta Bale. Fanta Bale (David Bale – Ucme Typhoon), bred and owned by NSW’s Paul Wheeler, began beautifully from box one as the $1.80 favourite, but was challenged throughout by Sale Cup winning West Australian, Quick Jagger. However, Fanta Bale drew on all her champion qualities to finish half a length ahead of Quick Jagger in the time of 42.63sec, claiming the $100,000 first prize and extending her career record to 42 wins from 62 starts.

“She’s like the people’s champion…she’s got a huge fan base,” said Mary Britton, wife of trainer Robert Britton.

Among the many Fanta Bale fans on hand at The Meadows was AFL games record holder, Brent ‘Boomer’ Harvey. “Just before Christmas I went over to the (Britton) kennels and had a photo with her and I didn’t realise how big she was…but what a star. I thought she was in a little bit of trouble on the last turn, but she got up, got the bickies and it’s fantastic to witness it here first hand,” the former North Melbourne champion said. It was a bitter-sweet night for Fernando Bale, whose son Hecton Bale won the Australian Cup later that evening.

nakie greyhound trainer Andrea Dailly won her fourth Australian Cup (525m) when Hecton Bale ($5.90) won in a sensational 29.53sec at The Meadows on 3 March.
After exiting box eight and settling in second position behind the baby of the field, Haston Slowly ($36.10), Hecton Bale found the lead in the back straight and won by a whopping five lengths, much to the delight of an emotional Dailly. It was the Paul Wheeler bred and owned Hecton Bale’s 13th win from 26 starts, and the $250,000 first prize took his stakes earnings up to $336,753. Haston Slowly finished in second place, with Queenslander Opal Nera ($7.30) third. Inset: Hecton Bale got a clear passage from box eight before defeating Hasten Slowly.
APRIL 2018
A week earlier, Hecton Bale, a two-and-a-half-year-old son of Fernando Bale and Searle Bale, was the fastest heat winner in 29.76sec. He had demonstrated an abundance of brilliance and versatility heading into the $1.3m Australian Cup Carnival, also winning the Group Listed Maidment Memorial (595m) at Sandown Park and the Ballarat Derby (450m).
“He’s a touch slow early so we’ve got to pick the tracks we take him to, but he’s a very good chaser and he’s very strong so we’ll just go to the Group 1 races and see what happens.” Dailly’s other Australian Cup winners are Dyna Lachlan (2010), Spud Regis (2013) and Dyna Double One (2016).

“He just got the perfect run tonight,” co-trainer George Dailly said after the Australian Cup. “Sometimes you hope for runs like that and they don’t happen all the time. The seven (Hasten Slowly) took him across the field and he was right there at the first turn which is what he needed. He’s a very strong dog and he ran home very nicely, so it was a great run.”

mong the highlights on last month’s Horsham Cup night was Bill Powell being announced as the inaugural inductee into the Horsham Greyhound Racing Club’s Hall of Fame.

Powell, 84, has devoted much of his life to greyhound racing and some of his achievements include 45 years on the Horsham GRC Committee including 23 as President, and he was also the recipient of the 2005 GRV Ken Carr Medal which is presented to a person for outstanding service to a greyhound club or organisation. “I had no idea this was happening,” a surprised Powell said. “They asked me to go up to the presentation after Up Hill Jill with her breeder owner Rose Geall. GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Powell, who started his career in greyhound racing as a trainer when in his teens, said the sport today is more lucrative than he even imagined. “When I first got into training greyhounds you’d get 17 quid for winning a race, and now you get the equivalent of that just to turn up,” he said. Horsham GRC Manager, Justin Brilliant said Powell’s induction into the club’s Hall of Fame was “a fitting tribute to a pioneer of greyhound racing in the Wimmera.” Remarkably, Victorian-trained greyhounds have won the past nine editions of the Golden Easter Egg, which is Sydney’s richest, and the equal second richest, greyhound race in Australia. Franking the dominance was the fact that the first four placegetters in the 2018 final were trained in Victoria – Up Hill Jill (Geall), Striker Light (Brett Bravo), Fernando Express (Robert Britton) and Dual Keroma (Anthony Azzopardi).

U
p Hill Jill ($6.20) produced the run of her career to mow down fellow Victorian Striker Light and claim the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg (520m) at Sydney’s Wentworth Park on 31 March. In yet another classic encounter between arguably the two best female greyhound sprinters this country has seen in the past decade, Striker Light, aided by box one, was well on the way to becoming the first greyhound to win the Golden Easter Egg twice before her arch rival showed enormous heart to make up three lengths on the triple Group 1 winner and claim the $250,000 first prize. “Striker Light is a superstar and she was highballing, and I just thought she might have run us off our feet. Coming to the corner I thought we were run off our feet, but how big was that?” Up Hill Jill’s trainer David Geall said after the race, in which she won by a quarter of a length in 29.77sec.
Up Hill Jill’s win was her second Group 1, as she also snared the 2017 Topgun at The Meadows, and Geall paid tribute to his star’s ability to remained focussed on the job at hand despite the festivity that comes with Golden Easter Egg night. “She’s so professional. Behind the boxes…the noise and the crowd (were so loud).. I was nervous but she’s just professional (and acted) as if nothing’s happening… as though it’s a little trial,” the Lara trainer said. Up Hill Jill (Premier Fantasy – Where’s Demonica), who turned three in February, was bred by Geall’s wife Rose, and this was her 67th start for 35 wins and 24 minor placings. She is now Australian greyhound racing’s six all-time highest prize money earner at $774,736.

K
eith and Jon Bowen felt a huge weight lift off their shoulders when Jimmy Newob ($4.90) took out the Group 2 CHS Group Horsham Cup (485m) on 10 March. Having come agonisingly close to winning at group level with Jimmy Newob over the previous 10 months, the brothers from the Mildura region roared with excitement as their star crossed the finish line almost five lengths clear of the hot $1.80 favourite Aston Dee Bee (Seona Thompson) and the first reserve Gregorovitch (Ian Cockerell). “It’s a huge relief to finally win a group race with him. He ran 2nd in the (Group 1) Harrison Dawson, 2nd in the Warragul Cup and 2nd in the Bulli Gold Cup, so he has been knocking on the door for a while now,” Keith Bowen said. APRIL 2018
Making the win even more special was the circumstances in which the Bowens came to own the Joseph Baldacchino-bred and Kel Greenough-trained Jimmy Newob. “Our mum passed away three years ago and left us a little bit of money, but it wasn’t enough to buy the leg of a horse,” Bowen laughed.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
“So we decided to buy two greyhound pups instead, and I noticed a young litter bred in NSW by Cosmic Rumble, who was the number two sire at the time, out of Nosey Rozy, who had won nine from 15, so we bought the pup from Joseph and he turned out to be Jimmy Newob,” Bowen said. Jimmy Newob is a relatively recent addition to Kelvyn Greenough’s kennel, having been trained for most of his career by Barry Fullerton of Red Cliffs. The win took Jimmy Newob’s record to 20 wins from 44 starts, with the $47,000 first prize taking his career earnings up to $207,344.

New Racing and Breeding Reference Groups formed By Molly Haines GRV have announced the members of the inaugural Racing (RRG) and Breeding (BRG) Reference Groups with both groups holding their first meetings during March. The establishment of these reference groups is intended to compliment the Industry Consultative Group (ICG), a sub-committee of the GRV Board which has a formal role in providing advice to the GRV Board in relation to issues of significance affecting the sport of greyhound racing. anta Bale will go down the best greyhound to grace an Australian race track.
It took me a while to come up with an opening line but that that’s what she is. It’s hard to compare greyhounds of different eras, perhaps even unfair to do so. But the fact remains that what she achieved on the track was not only unprecedented, but may never be done again. In fact, I’m confident will never be done agin. When Fernando Bale retired I wrote, ‘In time, his prize money record will be surpassed. We may even see another match his group race record.‘That was in December 2015 and I honestly never imagined the record books would be rewritten so quickly. Let me say from the outset that Fanta Bale is no Fernando Bale. Fernando Bale is the most brilliant greyhound I’ve seen in my 14 years in the sport (though it could be argued that Dyna Double One has a better record, a topic for another day) and will always remain a personal favourite. Consistently quick at box rise, high cruising speed, a keen chaser, and it was underrated just how strong he was at the end of races. He is the yard stick by which all other sprinters are, and forever will be, compared. Fanta Bale eclipsed ‘Flying’ Fernando’s prize money record with her win in the Super Stayers at the Meadows in March, the win

also surpassed Fernando’s record number of group 1 wins. But Fernando Bale boasts a superior winning strike rate (79.5% vs 66.7%), more prize money per start ($29,531 vs $21,669), and average winning margin (5.3 lengths vs 3.3 lengths). Fernando was more favoured by punters with a career starting price of $1.87 compared to Fanta Bale’s $2.41, and boasted a longest winning streak of 16 races while Fanta Bale’s longest streak stood at six (Fernando also had a seven race winning streak). Fernando Bale holds track and split records while Fanta Bale holds none. In fact, Fanta Bale, a winner over all three distances at both Sandown Park and The Meadows, hasn’t got close to the time standards over any of those trips. There’s no doubt Fernando Bale was simply brilliant, the best sprinter I’ve seen. But is it fair to compare them? No, they’re two very different chasers. His numbers remain mind boggling more than two years after his retirement, but her quality can’t be told by stats alone – though $1,365,175 in prize money and nine group 1 wins does make a compelling statement. Fanta Bale began her career with a bang, winning on debut at Sandown Park in 29.36 at the tender age of 21 months. She claimed her first group 1, the Hume Cup, over 600m at 26 months of age and spent virtually the rest of her career racing the country’s best chasers. In fact, her last 29 career starts were in group race heats or finals and boasted a record of 21-6-0 in that time, missing a place just once in that time if you exclude the mishap in her final run. She’s the only greyhound to have won at group 1 level over all three metropolitan distances, a feat that will surely never be repeated. She made 22 group finals over her career, winning 13 of which nine were at group 1 level. In fact, one could make the case that she performed better against higher quality opposition. In her 10 career group 1 finals, she won nine of them, her only loss coming by just over a length in the Sale Cup. Just making 10 group 1 finals is an amazing feat – boasting a 90% winning percentage in those finals, the highest level of the sport, is simply amazing.
Fanta Bale End of an era as champion retires

O
ne of the greatest careers in Australian greyhound racing has come to an end with Fanta Bale being officially retired on 27 March.
Australian greyhound racing’s all-time highest prize money winner and most accomplished group one winner pulled up lame in the heat of the Association Cup at Wentworth Park three nights earlier. After consulting with leading greyhound vet Dr Alistair Smith, trainer Robert Britton and connections decided to bring an end to her illustrious career. Britton said even though the injury was not serious, the time was right to make the call to end her time as a racing greyhound. “While it is relatively minor and she will make a full recovery, and considering her age and what she has achieved we have decided to retire her,” Britton said. The daughter of David Bale and Ucme Typhoon retires with a record $1,365,175 in prize money. She won 42 of her 63 career starts, contesting 22 group finals, winning 13 including a record nine at group 1 level.

reyhound Racing Victoria’s adoption program now has a city-based showcase with the opening of the GAP café.

The café is the first in Melbourne to have a greyhound theme and unlike most other food and beverage venues, dogs are allowed inside the premises as well as an outdoor area featuring decking and grass. The café has been built to promote to people in metropolitan Melbourne our beautiful greyhounds and increase the interest in greyhound adoptions. It is based a short walk from Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Chetwynd St offices in West Melbourne and is just 100 metres from the popular Flagstaff Gardens. Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula officially opened the GAP Café on 14 March. “The Greyhound Adoption Program café will help to improve animal welfare by making adoption even easier and driving up the number of rehomed racing dogs. We’re supporting the greyhound racing industry because it employs thousands of Victorians and injects hundreds of millions in the economy,” Minister Pakula said. With GAP’s headquarters based in Seymour in rural Victoria, GRV CEO Alan Clayton said it was important GAP was visible in the city, as evidenced by the Baxter facility in south east Melbourne. “Since opening in 2015, we have adopted almost 500 dogs from Baxter alone,” Mr Clayton said. “Given the large number of people in metropolitan Melbourne, we want to promote our dogs to the largest audience possible.” Clayton said the café was another example of GRV’s focus on
animal welfare as its overriding priority. “It can be an adjustment for greyhounds not only to go from life as racing animals to life as pets. Most of them also have to adjust from being based in rural and regional Victoria to suddenly living in metropolitan areas. This café will make it easier for people to come into contact with our greyhounds,” Mr Clayton said. The café has both an indoor and outdoor area for dogs and their owners and will be serving critically-acclaimed Campos roaster coffee sure to appeal to any coffee-loving Melburnian. It is the latest initiative from GRV to focus on encouraging greyhound adoption. With a record 1314 greyhounds adopted through its Greyhound Adoption Program in the 2016/17 financial year, GRV’s focus has been on ensuring the best possible life for greyhounds before, during and after their racing careers. “We have seen record numbers of greyhound adoptions in the past two years and word is getting out about the appeal of these beautiful dogs as pets,” Mr Clayton said. “There is a real community of greyhound owners and the GAP café is a great meeting place for this community as well as other dog owners.” The Victorian Government has provided almost $133,000 towards the cafe through the Victorian Racing Industry Fund, which is sourced from unclaimed wagering dividends and on-course wagering taxes. GRV has also committed $133,000 towards the animal welfare initiative. The new GAP Cafe is located at 477 King Street, West Melbourne, and is open from 7am–3pm Monday to Friday and 8am–3pm on weekends.
Todd McKenney to spearhead National Adoption Day By Luke Holmesby
I
n a national first, every Australian state will combine next month for the GAP National Adoption Day with Sky Racing signing on as a naming rights sponsor.
The Greyhound Adoption Programs in Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania, along with Greyhounds as Pets in Western Australia and New South Wales, will each host an adoption day on April 29 as part of a nation-wide push to boost awareness about greyhounds as pets. Theatre star, radio host and TV personality Todd McKenney has signed on to be the official ambassador for the National Adoption Day. McKenney, who has two pet greyhounds of his own, said he had fallen in love with the breed since learning about greyhound adoption from a friend. “They are such a beautiful breed and often misunderstood. People’s perceptions of a greyhound and the reality of what a
greyhound is actually like as a pet can often be two different things,” McKenney said. “They’re lazy, they’re loving, and they run like the wind – it’s amazing to watch. But they are just really relaxed dogs. They are chilled out, I love that energy around me, they’re just slow, lazy and gorgeous.” GRV CEO Alan Clayton said the Sky Racing National Adoption Day was another initiative that fit with GRV’s focus on animal welfare as its overriding priority. “We want to ensure the best possible life for every Victorian greyhound before, during and after their racing careers,” Mr Clayton said. “It is wonderful to be able to unite with the greyhound racing governing bodies of every other state in Australia to present what will be a momentous day for greyhound adoption in this country.” The Victorian leg of the National Adoption Day will be held at The Meadows from 11am-3pm.

The GOTBA would like to indicate its appreciation and thanks to GRV for recent funding and other assistance that we understand was provided for upgrades to be made to the Cranbourne Slipping Track facility. The Cranbourne Slipping Track plays an important role in the training and, indirectly, the welfare of many greyhounds in and around the immediate area. Its upgrade is of significant assistance to greyhound racing participants and their greyhounds and is something GOTBA has been seeking for some years. GOTBA has recently started to conduct surveys seeking members’ opinions on various issues. On the recent survey the most prominent concern was inconsistent and unsuitable track surfaces, while other issues were lure design and availability of Finish on Lure, Grading, code of practice, permits and regulator attitude to participants. All of these issues are or have been discussed with GRV and through our representation on the

Healesville raises fun-level and funds for Good Friday Appeal A Mitsubishi Mirage was won by Cranbourne West greyhound trainer Gordon Edwards.
By Suzanne McKenzie
T
he Healesville Greyhound Racing Association put on a great day of racing and entertainment in aid of the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal on 29 March. The event featured live music by The Big City Beat, a BBQ and the chance to win a $15,000 Mitsubishi Mirage. Special guest Jack Viney, co-captain of the Melbourne Demons, was on hand to meet people and sign autographs. He spoke about the connection between AFL players and greyhound racing, saying that quite a few players across the AFL had an interest in a greyhound.
“The club had raised $5,300 for the Good Friday Appeal prior to the day, and that figure grew to more than $7,000 after the fundraiser. We’re very happy to support such an important cause…it’s great to give back to the community,” she said. Greyhound trainer, Gordon Edwards from Cranbourne, was the lucky winner of the car. “Gordon couldn’t believe it when we broke the news to him. He is a regular at Healesville and he said winning the car had made his Easter,” Cynthia said. “We’ve also run a trainer’s raffle over the past eight weeks which raised about $800. That was drawn on the day and won by Adam Richardson, a trainer from Bushfield, near Warrnambool.” A feature race was conducted on the day, that being a Special Event over 350 metres, which was won by the Greg Paez-trained Bourbon An Khan.

Viney has a Burmese mountain dog at home, which is considerably slower than a greyhound, but couldn’t be persuaded to take home something a little faster as a second pet. The manager of the Healesville club, Cynthia O’Brien, said it was a fantastic day and thanked people for their support.

Terry Davis appointed to ICG By Dennis Timewell and Andrew Copley
M
would require endorsement by the GRV Board before being put into operation. The Board has requested GRV management to work with Greyhounds Australasia to ensure there is appropriate consultation, in future, of proposed rule changes prior to release.
elbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA) Director, Terry Davis (pictured) was welcomed to his first ICG meeting on 22 February. Davis replaces Marg Long as the metropolitan club representative, while NCA President Peter Craig has, like Long, not sought reappointment, with a second replacement to be announced. Peter and Marg have both served on the ICG since its formation in 2016 and they have both made valuable contributions.
In October last year, the GRV Board endorsed that a draft version of Welfare penalty guidelines be released for public comment, noting that Racing Appeals & Disciplinary Board (RADB) wouldn’t be bound by the guidelines and could choose to ignore them completely. The purpose of drafting the guidelines was to provide a basis for GRV prosecutors when considering a case and the penalty to be sought.
It was agreed that meetings would be held every two months leading into that month’s GRV Board meeting, to enable advice to be provided to the Board in a timely manner.
The ICG was advised that the Greyhound Owners Trainers & Breeders Association (GOTBA) felt that the proposed penalties for minor offences were too high (eg. the minimum penalty of a $1500 fine was too high for many participants). The ICG members generally supported the proposed penalties for serious welfare offences but recommended that minimum penalties for low end offences be re-considered and reduced.

The ICG raised what they considered a significant issue, that being a lack of consultation with regard to the draft release of Greyhound Australasia rule changes. The ICG was advised that the rule changes would not be implemented in Victoria until after appropriate consultation – which GRV has since undertaken - and
Q & A with the ICG’s Tracey Corneille How and when did you get involved in greyhound racing? I officially got involved in greyhound racing in 2004 as an owner, since then I have also become a registered attendant and breeder. What is the best dog you have been associated with? My best dog was Glamour Cru. She was out of Token Prince and Marungi Fire but unfortunately got injured just as she was reaching her prime. She just loved the Wangaratta track and in 2006 reached the semi-finals of the Laurels. Unfortunately, we had to retire her in 2008 after just 26 starts.

Why did you join the ICG?
14
The industry went through some dark days during the live baiting saga. Everyone associated with the industry was tarred with the same brush and I wasn’t prepared to wear that. I saw the ICG as a fabulous way to help get our industry back on top, where it should be. It is a fantastic industry I am proud to say that I am involved in it. I saw the ICG as an opportunity for participants to be heard by the administrators of the industry and I wanted the opportunity to give the hobby trainers a voice. How have you found your experience with the ICG so far?
By Molly Haines It has been an interesting time. The meetings are always lively and there are certainly very passionate members with strong views and opinions about the industry. What do you hope to get out of being a part of the ICG? First and foremost I want to help clean up the industry, which is happening at a fantastic rate. Secondly, I want to ensure the voice of the small hobby trainers are heard. Thirdly, I hope to contribute to educating the Management at GRV in understanding the practical aspects of operating a greyhound kennel. Do you have an occupation aside of greyhound racing? I am a professional administrator. I have worked for 30 plus years in Tertiary Education. I am currently taking a break from full time employment and making the most of being able to go to race meetings whenever I want to! Your thoughts on greyhound racing in Victoria? It’s on the way back up to where it should be. We’re not there yet and participants need to understand it will take a bit more work to get there. The important thing is that when we do get back up there we don’t let our standards slip. We have to comprehend that one more slip up and the industry could be gone forever.
In 2016, the Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria appointed an Industry Consultative Group (ICG), with members having appropriate experience and diversity across a number of areas. The ICG meets every two months to discuss major issues facing the industry, out of which suggestions are forwarded to GRV’s Board for consideration.
The ICG panel comprises of Dr Barbara Backhoy, Deborah Churchill, Steven Clarke, Tracey Corneille, Terry Davis, Sheldon Hamilton, Brian Jones, Nicole Lund, Daniel Nugent, Sandra Reed and Tom Welsh.

Crowds flock to biggest ever greyhound community day By Suzanne McKenzie
S
unny weather, free activities and more than 250 greyhounds featured at GAP’s Greyhound Community Day, which was held at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club on Saturday, 17th March 2018.
“That means 3,000 greyhounds a year and that is what we are going to do. Last year 2,700 found homes, thanks to you,” he told the crowd. “Thank-you for coming on this 3,000-dog journey with us.”
This was GRV’s fourth greyhound community day and it was the biggest to date, combining the day of activities with an adoption day, as well as celebrations marking GAP’s 22nd birthday.
Special guests Mel Tochner and Anita Smith, who founded GAP 22 years ago, were welcomed to the stage. Mel said she was blown away by the success of GAP and Anita said she now sees greyhounds ‘everywhere’ as they become increasingly popular as pets.
Organisers were delighted that all 22 greyhounds found their forever homes during the adoption session held in the afternoon. Almost 1,000 people came through the gates, most of them with greyhounds. The day included a free bbq, food trucks, music, activities for the kids and stalls selling rugs, collars and other merchandise for canines.
Photographer Clint Anderson was raised to dizzy heights on a cherry picker in the centre of the track to take a wide-angle photo of the assembled greyhounds and their human families. Later, there was birthday cake for volunteers and staff to celebrate 22 years of GAP.
Greyhounds lapped up the attention and water from dog bowls to keep cool throughout the warm day. ‘Clamshell’ paddling pools were popular with the pooches, with dogs lounging around or splashing around, depending on their energy levels. APRIL 2018
GRV’s CEO Alan Clayton welcomed the crowd: “It’s a day to say thank you, whether you have adopted a greyhound or you work with greyhounds,” he said before remarking on the dogs’ placid, loving nature. “They are great companions, they are quirky and they want to be part of the family.” He said GRV was aiming to get to a point where every greyhound bred for racing was re-homed.

Victoria’s greyhound racing community is saddened by the recent loss of Alan Miles, who passed away on 20 March following a battle with cancer. Alan, 71, was the longest serving employee of the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA) having clocked up 40 years of service as the Judge and Groundsman, among other roles, at both Olympic Park and The Meadows. “Alan’s dad used to sell all sorts of greyhound items from the car park at Olympic Park so Alan has been around greyhounds forever,” said MGRA General Manager, Marg Long. “He retired in 2011, however could be found at his regular table at The Meadows every Saturday and Wednesday studying and debating the form with his mates. He loved to reminisce about the early days at Olympic Park and had many fond memories of the great greyhounds to grace our tracks.”

A funeral and wake was held for Alan at The Meadows on 26 March, with Long adding that it was “fitting he should have his final send off at the place he loved so much.”

By Molly Haines The Geelong Greyhound Racing Club will extend the Finish On Lure to the Inside track on Tuesday 24 April. The inside track boasts two distances; 520 metres and 596 metres which will give more greyhounds a chance to compete on the Finish On Lure over their preferred distance. “The trial of the Finish On Lure on the Outside track has been a great success with nominations up 30 percent,” Acting General Manager of Racing Scott Robins said. “The feedback from the Geelong Club and participants has been very positive which gives us confidence the inside track will share the success.”
The Inside track will run with the Finish On Lure during Tier 3 meetings on Tuesdays and Provincial meetings on Fridays for full stakes.

going to get to the 500m, and after he put some brilliant trials back in New South Wales that was the end of it, I knew it was going to happen.
Beware the Beast By Mick Floyd
B
east Unleashed showed why he is regarded as one of the country’s most exciting chasers with a brilliant all of the way victory in the $210,000 Group 2 Launching Pad (515m) at Sandown Park on 29 March. Taking full advantage of his rails draw, Beast Unleased led narrowly through the first turn before unleashing his trademark mid-race pace to open a three-length margin down the back straight. The move would prove pivotal, Chief’s Sidekick began to improve off the back straight and cut the margin to less than a length in the run to the line. However, the $2.70 favourite prevailed, stopping the clock in a series best 29.34sec and remain undefeated throughout the series.
“We’ve been up and down for about seven weeks now, but we have stayed here the last three weeks. (Melbourne Cup winning trainer) Jason Mackay gave me some advice, he said if I want to win this, you’ve got to stay here you don’t travel up and down. He said ‘how do you feel after travelling that much, imagine how the dog feels,’ so a big thanks to Jason for giving me that advice. And a big thank you too to Anthony Azzopardi and his family for putting us up. When he saw the dog trial he said he can win this.” Lagogiane has spent a considerable amount of time away from his young family during the season and was delighted to celebrate the victory with them, as well as Beast Unleashed’s owner Dawn Garrett, track side. Beast Unleashed (Barcia Bale – Little Miss Hap), who was bred in Victoria by Alan Ferguson and turns two in April, made it seven wins from his first eight career starts and took his prize money earnings beyond $177,000. It was the biggest win of Lagogiane’s career. Earlier in the night, Jimmy Newob continued his outstanding form with a determined victory in a thrilling edition of the $36,000 Group 3 Easter Gift (515m), holding out Extreme Magic by the barest possible margin. It was the popular blue dog’s second success at group level in as many starts following his recent Group 2 Horsham Cup success. Almost 1000 children attended the Launching Pad final, which was part of Sandown's huge annual Easter Thursday Kids Night. Photos by: Clint Anderson.
“I’m lost for words,” said Peter Lagogiane, who trains the greyhound in partnership with his wife, Jodie. “A big thank you to the dog. He’s the one that does it all, us trainers we just feed him, train him, and make sure they’re sound and that’s it. He’s the one with the motor, we just fine-tuned it. I’m tickled pink for my family, and for the owner Dawn Garrett.” Lagogiane began preparations for the $410,000 sweepstakes series after a number of impressive performances in his home state of New South Wales. A plan was put in place to ensure the dog was given every opportunity for success in the series, one of the richest greyhound racing in the country. “I looked at this race many months ago. he last two episodes of GRV’s Greyhounds are My Life (GAML) video series were released last month in the run up to the Horsham Cup. The 25-part series which started in December 2016, has profiled breeders, owners, trainers, club staff, stewards, race callers and judges associated with each of Victoria’s 13 greyhound racing clubs. Hundreds of kilometres in travel around Victoria and up to three cameras at once to capture the atmosphere on and off the track went into telling stories about generations and families, communities and clubs, all united by their passion for the sport and their love of the dogs. The 3-5 minute videos have been released on the GRV and Club websites, screened in regional cinemas and has attracted a great response from both participants and the general community.

APPLY FOR DNA TODAY! GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early. For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows:
Full details at: grv.org.au/vicgreys
GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.
For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
DID YOU KNOW GRV’s new VicGreys program is generating up to $1.4m in bonuses to Victorian breeders and owners across 1,900 Victorian races each year.
1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.

Especial Shiraz with breeder trainer, Peter Knott, and (right) daughter Elise with pups from a three month litter by Primo Uno out of Especially.
Sire and dam selection should Knott be underestimated By Andrew Copley
C
arnegie breeder trainer Peter Knott is making a name for himself thanks to the success of his 25-month-old litter by Bombastic Shiraz out of Especially.
The litter includes Especial Shiraz and Go Commando, who ran first and second respectively in heats of the recent Group 2 Launching Pad (515m) series at Sandown Park before being unplaced in the semi-finals.

Knott, who lives on a house block and is a painter by trade, said he has invested heavily in the litter.
20
“This was the very last straw of Bombastic Shiraz so it was worth a lot of money. I paid $20,000 for the straw. The stud fee combined with the costs of getting the seven pups to the racetrack has cost me around $50,000 in total,” he said. Especial Shiraz is the only greyhound Knott trains, however he owns all seven in the litter. He breeds his litters at home and keeps the pups in his backyard until they are about four months of age. “At 16 weeks I send my pups to be reared in Pearcedale by Justin Illman, who is the best commercial rearer I’ve found, and after that they go to Kevin McNamara, near Maryborough, for breaking
in. The McNamaras do a fantastic job that is second to none,” he said. This is the fifth litter Knott has bred since starting out as a greyhound breeder in 2007, and he is proud that all seven pups have made it to the racetrack, with three winning on city tracks. He said successful breeding starts with careful selection of the sire and dam. “I remember listening to an interview a few years ago with Paul Wheeler, who said he only breeds with females that have won multiple city races, and to me, that’s the first rule of thumb,” Knott said. “Then when it comes to selecting a sire I use the services of Pedigrees By Design, which is run by David Brasch in Queensland. For a small fee of $110, David does all the homework for you. You’re investing a lot of money when you breed a litter, so you don’t want to get it wrong, and David has a great success rate.” Knott said it was a case of all hands on deck with his greyhounds at home, with wife Sue preparing the feeds, son Cameron assisting with the cardio training of Especial Shiraz, and daughter Elise in charge of grooming and providing the all-important TLC.

ngela Langton says a lack of self-belief may be preventing some greyhound breeders from reaching their potential.
Langton and her mother Sue Smith have achieved extraordinary success as breeders, winning numerous group races with greyhounds they’ve bred including Que Sera Sera, Auf Weidersehen, Lynlea’s King, Come On Lleyton, Wizard’s Chess and Yowyeh. “I’m very passionate about breeding. I want to win group races and I’ve got enormous drive to be the best breeder I can be, and I think some breeders need to aim higher and believe in themselves a bit more,” she said. The Anakie breeder trainer said consistently achieving success as a breeder starts from before a mating even occurs. “I believe you have to be very selective with the greyhounds you choose to breed with. I like to breed with hard-chasing dams who can run 500 metres or further,” she said. Langton said that a lot of pups are kept in cotton wool and don’t get enough exercise, particularly during the rearing phase.
Breeders should reach for the sky Karen Leek with Trouper, who is part of a great litter she bred. Photo by: Clint Anderson.
“I believe you need to feed the best you can and give your pups plenty of handling and plenty of galloping. I believe that some people are too scared to let their pups run too much, but that’s how they learn to run and learn to stretch out,” she insisted. Langton said some trainers also need to set the bar higher with regard to racing their greyhounds. “Some people never actually try to step their dogs up to 500 metres because they just don’t see themselves as metropolitan trainers, but it’s silly to think like that. If people step out of their comfort zones and, within reason, give their dogs a try over more ground they might find that they have a city class dog on their hands,” she said.
Lady Deedee. The litter of six has produced five winners, four of which are trained by Leek. The best of them is Trouper, who won the Horsham Cup Consolation (485m) last month, along with talented stayers Sir Jay Jay and Lady Ceecee plus Savannah Ash, who has won at Sandown Park in the impressive time of 29.67sec. APRIL 2018
Based in Devon Meadows, Leek also has an outstanding reputation as a commercial rearer, having reared my champions in years gone by including Brokenwood, Godsend, Moreira and Nolen along with present-day stars Bewildering and Extreme Magic. Speaking on SEN’s The Sporting Capital last month, Leek told listeners that anyone thinking about purchasing a greyhound pup should first organise a reputable rearer.

Planning is imperative when buying a pup
“If you’re going to buy a pup and you’ve got your eye on a litter, try to find someone to rear your pup before you purchase it,” Leek said. “it’s important you don’t have it reared by just anyone because the rearing phase is such an integral part of a greyhound’s life and can be the difference between winning races and not making it to the racetrack at all. Speak to people that are successful and ask where they get their pups reared, and go from there.”

A rare visitor to Melbourne these days, Mugavin was on track to witness Janali comfortably defeat Yongning (Daryl Holmes) and Annasay (William McMahon) in 30.29sec, and he could barely contain his excitement after the daughter of Barcia Bale and Born Ali snared the $25,000 first prize.
22
“I used to travel to Melbourne to watch Born Ali race quite a bit. She was a Group 1 winner and competed in a lot of group races, and to have one of her daughters win a Group 3 is enormous, especially on a night like this,” Mugavin said after Janali notched what was the second win of her career from six starts. A school teacher by trade, Mugavin commended the Britton camp for getting Janali ready for the Vic Bred series after she

had a setback that saw her miss four months of racing between October and mid-February. “She fell and broke her shoulder at her third start, so it’s a huge effort by (co-trainers) Robbie Britton, Brendan Pursell and their team to get her ready for this race,” he said. The Barcia Bale litter was Born Ali’s first, and Mugavin believes the best is yet to come for the 23-month-old litter. “Born Ali was a great chaser, she was very versatile and there’s a lot more improvement in Janali. Others in the litter include Benali, who has had injury issues but has run 29.25sec at Sandown, Barcali, Born Jamie and Menzali, who all have ability,” Mugavin said. Mugavin, a former AFL star with Fitzroy and Richmond, is currently rearing an 11-month-old My Bro Fabio-Born Ali litter at home, while he recently purchased a Fernando Bale straw for seven-year-old Born Ali’s next mating.

Longwood, Popowski will have a perfect opportunity to build her confidence, with only one opponent, and the heat and final format of the meeting will be an easy introduction for her first try at the coursing,” Craig said.
Coursing is a fantastic avenue for preparing young greyhounds for the rigours of racing as it helps get them super fit and improves their balance. It also provides a change of scene for race dogs and is an excellent alternative for slower and older greyhounds.
“She also has the bad habit of chewing up her bedding in the excitement of the track racing kennels (never at home) and I’ve found the process at coursing with the dogs racing and then going back in the trailer for a couple of hours, before repeating the process, settles some of those excitable greyhounds that waste all their energy in the kennels. Of course, the fact that most of the maiden events (Popowski is still eligible for a maiden coursing event despite winning five races on the circle) are divided between males and females is a great advantage as it means she will be competing in her own weight division, so to speak.”
ith Victoria’s 2018 coursing season almost upon us The Meadows hosted a coursing demonstration in between races on Saturday, 24 March.
“There wasn't a huge crowd but a good number came down watching them come out of slips and asking questions,” said National Coursing Association President, Peter Craig.
Craig, who trained the 2014 Waterloo Cup winner Full Of Grace, has a couple of young female greyhounds he plans to course in 2018. “This year I have a couple of females that are struggling with confidence on the track and are now beyond four wins so the opportunity for finding easier races is starting to dry up. Dynamic Rainbow was able to win a maiden coursing event last season but Popowski hasn’t coursed before,” Craig said. The 2018 season opens with the Catch on to Coursing meeting at Longwood on 15 April, where greyhounds course twice on the day, giving trainers the opportunity to assess their suitability to regular coursing, where they are required to race up to three times in a day. “With the upcoming Catch on to Coursing meeting at
Craig said the different conditions that coursing offers such as the straight track and different lure and surfaces, helps keep greyhounds stimulated. “There is a coursing meeting every second weekend from the end of April until the Waterloo Cup in August, so the next six months will see my girls getting a bit of variety in their racing and hopefully variety is the spice of life for them.” “Of course there is always the dream that they take to coursing like a duck to water and the 2018 Waterloo Cup Trophy ends up back at my place,” he said.

Did you know that GAP adopted more than 1,300 greyhounds into the homes of Victorian families in the 2017 financial year? That’s an average of more than three per day!
*NEW GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

Welfare Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare
Local Rule 42.6: Six months since implementation The beginning of April marks 6 months since GRV’s introduction of amendments to Local Rule 42.6. The rule requires that an owner makes reasonable efforts to re-home their fit and healthy greyhound, including a wind-down period prior to minimum specified re-homing efforts.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news
These re-homing attempts include contacting at least two suitable people (eg friends, family or other contacts) to adopt the dog; AND contacting at least one animal adoption, rescue or re-homing group; AND attempting entry to GAP. If none of these re-homing attempts are successful, and a decision to euthanase is made, the new LR 42.6 requires owners to submit a Notice of Intention (NoI) to Euthanase at least 14 days prior. This NoI is a FastTrack form found under the ‘My Dogs’ tab.
32
Where a greyhound is medically or behaviourally unsuitable for re-homing, the owner is exempt from certain re-homing efforts if they supply a veterinary certificate that certifies this. While a medical condition is usually straightforward for a veterinarian to certify, your veterinarian may not be able to certify a behavioural issue if they do not witness the particular behaviour firsthand. If you require a veterinary certificate to support a behavioural exemption, please contact your veterinarian in advance to explain your situation, and they will advise what they will require from you in terms of evidence. From GRV’s perspective, the veterinary certificate for a behavioural exemption will only be accepted if the veterinarian actually certifies that the greyhound is unsuitable for re-homing due to a significant behavioural issue. Please note that the behavioural certificate must be provided to support the NoI; the behavioural certificate is not the NoI. GRV has a participant support package for LR 42.6 which includes a fact sheet and frequently asked questions, a re-homing checklist and copies of the approved
templates for the various certificates. It is important to note that GRV will no longer accept euthanasia certificates that are not completed on the approved form in accordance with the rule. To avoid having to chase your veterinarian, please ensure you take a copy of the approved form with you to your veterinary appointment. For a copy of the support package, please call GRV on 8329 1100 or email retirements@grv.org.au. On-Track Seminar Series The fifth topic in GRV’s on-track seminar series will commence 10 April 2018 at the Horsham track. The topic is “Early Greyhound Education and the Impact on Racing Success”. This seminar begins a discussion about how early life activities can impact on racing success.
Animal welfare staff will be at tracks to introduce the topic, please feel free to come and chat to the team on one of the dates below: 10 April - Horsham (Twilight) 11 April - Meadows (Day), Bendigo (Twilight) 12 April - Warragul (Day), Sandown (Night) 16 April - Traralgon (Twilight) 17 April - Ballarat (Twilight) 18 April - Warrnambool (Night), Cranbourne (Night) 19 April - Shepparton (Twilight) 20 April - Geelong (Night) 27 April - Healesville (Day)
ALWAYS BE SNAKE SAVVY By Aimee Black
Summer is over yet GRV continues to receive reports of an increased number of snake sightings in Victoria and an increase in domestic animals being bitten. Please ensure that you are vigilant when it comes to protecting your greyhounds from the risk of snake bites at this time. Action you can take to reduce the risk of snakes include keeping grass cut low and keeping your property clear of piles of rubbish ad other objects where snakes may hide (e.g. wood piles). If you think your greyhound has been bitten by a snake, keep them as calm and quiet as possible and take them to a vet immediately.
The chance of recovery is much greater if treated early. If your vet is some distance away you can apply a firm bandage over and around the bite site to apply pressure and help slow the venom spreading to the heart. Do NOT wash the wound or apply a tourniquet. If you can identify the snake, tell your vet what type of snake it is but don’t try to catch or kill it. Source: RSPCA Victoria
HAS YOUR GREYHOUND BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED AT THE TRACK?
ASK THE ON-TRACK VET about GRV funding* for a full injury assessment off-track Further funding* may be available for treatment of eligible injuries.
Make an informed decision about the future of your greyhound *GRV’s new Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI) program
MICROCHIPPING AGE TO CHANGE from 1 April 2018 Due to changes to legislation in Victoria that exempts racing greyhounds in Victoria from the requirement to be registered with local council, GRV is required to move the age of microchipping from the second puppy vaccination (10-16 weeks) to the first puppy vaccination (6-8 weeks).
GRV has commenced work on amendments to FastTrack to facilitate this change by 1 April 2018. Under the new system, when the vet vaccinates your puppies at 6-8 weeks of age, they will also microchip the puppies at the same time, instead of waiting until the 10-16 week vaccination. There will be no additional work or requirements for participants; but you should be aware of the changes.
Greyhound Racing Victoria reminds participants to ensure their greyhounds do not chew or lick CCA treated (tanalised) timber as it contains the prohibited substance arsenic. A number of cases presented to the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board in recent months have seen greyhounds presented to race with levels of arsenic in their system exceeding the 800 ng/mL urinary threshold.
Some explanations from participants for elevated readings have been that the greyhounds in question have chewed CCA (Copper, Chromium and Arsenate) treated timber located in their kennels. CCA is used for timber preservation and it protects from dry rot, fungi, mould, termites and other pests that can threaten the integrity of timber products. Timber that is freshly treated with CCA has a greenish tinge that fades over time. It has been suggested in some greyhound cases that chewing of CCA treated timber may have resulted in breaches of the 800 ng/mL urinary arsenic threshold. While this has not been proven scientifically, a reduction in urinary arsenic concentrations following removal from the affected kennels may in some ways partly explain
Similarly, some seaweed-based animal nutritional supplements have been the likely cause of breaches of the arsenic threshold due to the high concentrations measured in them. It has also been raised in some inquiries that the feeding of sardines (or other seafood) close to racing was the cause of high arsenic readings. Although not proven, seafood can be regarded as potentially a major contributor to high arsenic levels in humans due to the contamination of sea water, and so participants should be mindful of the risk associated with feeding these products and as a precaution should avoid feeding them within 48 hours of racing. While GRV accepts that in many of these cases there had been no intent to administer prohibited substances to the greyhounds, owners and trainers do have an obligation to prevent such situations from occurring. Previous general alerts regarding arsenic were made on March 28, 2017 and June 23, 2017.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
GAR 83 (11) was introduced in July 2016, and several communications have been published to assist participants in avoiding a breach of the arsenic threshold.
these matters. Participants should therefore be mindful that chewing or licking of kennels / yards constructed with CCA treated timber may result in breaches of the threshold. If this does occur, urinary arsenic concentrations are likely to be below the threshold within 48 hours of being removed from the source.
