CEO’s Update

W

elcome to the May edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria. A major development in April was the release of the final version of the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds, developed by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) and which is posted at agriculture.vic.gov.au/pets/dogs/ greyhounds/code-of-practice.

All people keeping racing greyhounds are required to be compliant with the Code and its provisions from 1 January, 2020 which gives us 20 months to make compliance as simple and easy as possible for current and new participants. The Victorian Greyhound Clubs Association and GOTBA have worked very closely with DEDJTR to make the Code as workable as possible for all involved in the industry, as have many participants and clubs. It is imperative for the future of our sport and our commitment to stakeholders and members that participants have as much information and support as possible as they prepare to become complaint with the new Code. As the sport’s regulator, Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) will work together with the State Government, Victorian Greyhound Racing Clubs, members and stakeholders to help make compliance as simple and easy as possible for participants and new people joining the sport. Over the next few months, GRV will be developing support materials for participants such as plan templates, ready reckoners, fact sheets and other information. GRV has created a Code specific web page at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/state-governmentupdate-to-the-code-of-practice-for-the-keepingof-racing-greyhounds. The site contains news and information, including plain English FAQs, that will be updated regularly in response to industry enquiries. GRV is now also examining the new code to develop its regulatory approach and to ensure FastTrack will be fully upgraded to handle Code reporting requirements.

Speaking of planning for the sport’s future, I am pleased to note that the Breeding and Racing Reference Groups have now developed agendas on key issues and you can read more about their work in this edition of the Monthly. The Reference Groups will play a major role in building industry consensus for factors that will drive the sport’s future growth and I encourage you to contact them if you have any issues you think should be raised. Turning now to the future of retired greyhounds, every Australian state took part in the first ever GAP National Adoption Day on Sunday 29 April, except for Tasmania, which held its day on 28 April. The Day saw 212 greyhounds find new homes including 68 at The Meadows. In other news, you may be aware, the Warragul race meeting on 5 April was cancelled at the last minute after the stewards decided the new kennels were unsuitable in their current condition for kennelling greyhounds. This was due to issues with the commissioning process for infrastructure works and for which GRV takes full responsibility. We are now working to ensure these issues do not arise again and that Club communications are as effective and timely as possible. On the track, May will offer plenty of action with the Warrnambool Cup on Wednesday 2 May, a very popular meeting that brings greyhound racing together with its sister code, thoroughbred racing, followed by the Speed Star night on 10 May and Sandown Cup on 24 May. And, finally, I would like to remind you that the 2018 coursing season is now underway in Victoria and with a significant boost in prize money this year, now up to over $167,000. There’s never been a better time to catch on to coursing, which offers a great day out and a fine introduction to the sport at literally the grassroots level. MAY 2018

The Government has also announced that the muzzle will no longer be required for retired greyhounds from 1 January, 2019. GRV is committed to the ‘Green Collar’ as it provides the community with positive assurance and confidence. This follows a review of muzzling requirements by DEDJTR, for which GRV and other key stakeholders provided input.

It’s important to note that the Government has amended the Code substantially since the Draft version, responding to input from the industry and others. This reflects their unequivocal and ongoing support for the sport, including substantial funding and regular attendance at our tracks by the Premier, Deputy Premier, Minister for Racing and Shadow Ministers. And the sport has also received strong support from the State Opposition and various local members.

Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds will come into effect in 2020 By Ian Haberfield

T

he Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources has released the final version of the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing

GRV Chief Executive Officer Alan Clayton said release of the Code would bring greater certainty for participants and industry investment. “GRV looks forward to working with the Victorian Greyhound Racing Clubs Association, GOTBA, all 13 clubs, and other key stakeholders to ensure all participants understand and comply with the Code,” Mr Clayton said. “Once we have all had an opportunity to absorb the Code, GRV and key stakeholders will outline what support and assistance we can provide in making compliance as simple and easy as possible for participants and new people joining the sport. “It’s important to note that the Code does not come into effect until 1 January 2020 which gives everyone 20 months to meet their obligations.” A dedicated GRV web page has been set up for all things Code-related: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/state-governmentupdate-to-the-code-of-practice-for-the-keeping-of-racinggreyhounds

GRV’s General Counsel, Terrie Benfield, met with members of the Victorian Planning Enforcement Officers Association in March to discuss the new Statewide Planning Scheme “Planning requirements for racing dog keeping and training” which came into effect in August 2017.

Muzzles to be removed and greyhound welfare to be improved

on-racing greyhounds will no longer be required to be muzzled in public under reforms announced on 23 April by the Victorian Government.

From 1 January 2019, non-racing greyhounds won’t need a muzzle in public, but will still need to be leashed. The announcement came on the same day as the Victorian Government released the final Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds.

2015 live baiting scandal. More than 1,300 public submissions were received and thoroughly considered in developing the Code, which reflects the importance of exposing puppies to certain activities during the 3-16 week critical socialisation period and includes a pathway for retiring greyhounds to prepare for rehoming. “The new Code will boost welfare for greyhounds at every stage of life,” announced Minister for Agriculture, Jaala Pulford.

The new Code sets minimum standards that provide flexibility to greyhound industry participants, while prioritising the ongoing welfare of racing greyhounds.

“We’re striking the right balance between welfare for racing greyhounds, a strong industry and dogs that are well suited to become much loved pets in their retirement.”

Both decisions were made following extensive consultation with industry and the community.

Minister for Racing Martin Pakula agreed that the new Code of Practice would benefit the greyhound racing’s number one stakeholder, the greyhound itself.

The new Code was a key recommendation from Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Charles Milne, in his report Investigation into animal welfare and cruelty in the Victorian greyhound industry. The report is one of two detailed investigations resulting in 68 recommendations to Government and industry following the

“We’re ensuring animal welfare is a top priority so that the greyhound racing industry continues to thrive.” The Government also announced that the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds will be enforced by Greyhound Racing Victoria.

GRV’s CEO has contract extended to 2020

T

he Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria has, with the endorsement of the Minister for Racing, extended the contract of Chief Executive Officer Alan Clayton to June 2020. GRV Board Chair Bernie Carolan said the decision to extend Mr Clayton’s contract was an easy one for the Board given his achievements since taking on the CEO role in August 2015. “Alan joined GRV during a turbulent period for greyhound racing and has led the way in meeting all GRV’s obligations from the Milne and Perna reports, restabilising the sport and transforming GRV,” Mr Carolan said.

“Alan has worked closely with GRV staff, our clubs, participants and key stakeholders to ensure greyhound racing in Victoria is best placed to have a long and successful future. “Under Alan’s leadership, rehoming is at record levels, animal welfare is the priority of all and integrity has become entrenched in our organisation. At the same time we have more events than ever before, we are investing in Club facilities and wagering on our sport continues to grow. “The Board looks forward to continuing to work with Alan as we lead GRV and the industry to a secure and long term future.”

RACING REFERENCE GROUP UPDATE By Molly Haines

The Racing Reference Group’s (RRG) second meeting was focussed on racing and trialling lures and possible designs. The RRG discussed many options for potential racing lure arms and lures with the below three designs being drawn up. All designs have been suggested with the aim of encouraging greyhounds to chase, reducing interference in races and overall safety for greyhounds.

“The Hoop Arm was originally introduced as a safety feature for greyhounds who fell during a race and run back towards the lure. All 13 Clubs now have a breaking system installed which alleviates the need for a Hoop Arm Lure.” Grading, mandatory performance trials, catching pen designs and operations as well as a continued discussion on lure designs will be discussed at the next RRG meeting on Tuesday 8 May.

“We are excited to trial the suggested arms, and from there we will assess how the arms perform in relation to all of the key metrics including, interference, racing injuries and incidents,” Acting General Manager Racing, Scott Robins said.

was able to help us raise more funds to support this wonderful cause,” McMaster said. The Bees On Fire Syndicate have been hands on with their athlete since making their purchase, visiting him at the kennels, watching him trial and watching him as a group at Geelong in his fourth and most recent start on April 27.

“My goal was to find a common interest the club could bond over – an interest outside of football because they live and breathe it,” Werribee Football Club Past and Present Players and Officials Co-ordinator, Michael McMaster said. Before the club decided to purchase Bees On Fire through McMaster’s friend and greyhound trainer Jeff Britton, the club had a retirement plan for the greyhound.

At just 26 months of age, Bees On Fire has had a handful of starts, including a win in his second ever race at Bendigo on 2 April.

“Everyone has really got around the dog. There is plenty of dialogue around him on our Facebook group chat which is really healthy for everyone involved,” McMaster said. Although in the early stages of his career, the Syndicate have a plan on how they would like to spend Bees On Fire’s prize money should it accumulate at a reasonable rate. This includes a function for all involved with the greyhound and a donation towards research into Motor Neurone Disease in support of one of the Werribee Football Club’s most famous former players. “Neale Daniher was a past player of the Werribee Football Club and we have been involved with his fundraising initiative ‘Daniher’s Drive’ in the past. “The boys were so excited after he won his first race – the race was at 11.56am and the pub wouldn’t open their doors, so a big group of them watched Bees On Fire through the pub window. The video of everyone celebrating is priceless,” McMaster said.

“It was really important to everyone that our greyhound had a home to go to when his racing career finished. I was more than happy to put my hand up to do the honours and I have had plenty of people offering their dog sitting services too,” McMaster said.

uckley trainer Ian Cockerell says six of his greyhounds would have been racing in New Zealand or retired if it wasn’t for the Finish on Lure (FOL) at Geelong.

8

“I wasn’t always a believer in the Finish on Lure system, but we had nothing to lose by trying with our Barcia Bale x Bathilda Bagshot litter and it has turned out to be our saviour,” Ian Cockerell said. Gregorovitch, who is one of the Barcia Bale x Bathilda Bagshot litter booked to fly to New Zealand following two marring offences, is just one example of what the FOL has done for this litter.

“The introduction of the Finish in Lure to the Inside track is something that I am really eager for. Gregorovitch doesn’t perform on the circle tracks (Sandown) but can run 500 and I think it’s because he knows he is going into the Catching Pen.” “Racing Gregorovitch on the inside track will hopefully mean I can start targeting races in the city with him.” “I am not saying that the Finish on Lure should be at every track – I don’t think that is the case at all, but I do think that giving trainers options in Victoria will mean dogs will stay here,” Cockerell said. Cockerell’s steps to targeting feature races using the FOL STEP

SOLO trial at Geelong on the FOL.

“Running your greyhound onto the Finish on Lure on their own for the first time means they can gain confidence on the lure without interference from other greyhounds,” Cockerell said.

2

Half field trial under race conditions at Geelong on FOL.

“Teaching your greyhounds how to finish on a lure with other greyhounds is vital step, a half field trial is a great way to do this because there are usually no more than four dogs in a field,” Cockerell said.

“There was six weeks of preparation to get Gregorovitch to the Horsham Cup heats,” Cockerell Said.

Race at Geelong on FOL on Friday 9 February 2018.

Gregorovitch won first start on FOL in 25.69sec (BON 25.64sec)

“The reward at the end of a race is why I think the Finish on Lure has helped Gregorovitch and the rest of his litter. I’m not saying that the finish on has solved my problems at all, but there is no doubt it is the reason I still have Gregorovitch in the kennels.”

Race in the Horsham Cup on Saturday 10 March 2018.

Finished third in the Group Two Horsham Cup in a time of 27.39sec (BON 27.07sec)

Cockerell understands that the FOL isn’t for everyone but urges anyone who has a dog that isn’t chasing 100 percent to try the system, but it isn’t as simple as just nominating. “You can’t just throw a greyhound in a Finish on Lure race without preparing it because it is a different type of racing,” Cockerell said. Cockerell believes that moving forward we need three types of racing to get the best out of our greyhounds; Traditional (Catching Pen races), Coursing and Finish on Lure.

In the 2018 Horsham Cup series, Gregorovitch finished second in his heat and gained a start as a reserve in the Cup where he finished third – a $6,650 reward for effort. Cockerell shares his suggested steps in targeting feature races with ‘iffy’ greyhounds, using the program he planned for Gregorovitch in the lead up to the Horsham Cup. Cockerell stresses the importance of returning to the FOL system regularly for greyhounds like Gregorovitch. Having made the mistake heading straight to Sandown following the Horsham Cup series and receiving a 28 day stand down for failing to pursue the lure with due commitment.

Victoria leads the way with an exciting racing program By Suzanne McKenzie

G

reyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) has announced an exciting program of greyhound racing for the 2018–19 racing year, with 1192 race meetings and $47 million in prizemoney up for grabs.

Carnival will be held at The Meadows in February-March 2019, featuring $1.3 million in prize money and five Group 1s – the Temlee, Rookie Rebel, Zoom Top, Australian Cup and the Fanta Bale Super Stayers.

One of the highlights of the season will be the 2018 Greyhound Clubs Australia (GCA) National Sprint & Distance Championship Finals, which will be held at Sandown Park on Friday, August 24. Victoria last hosted this premier racing event in 2013. GCA, which conducts the annual championship, has announced that for the first time all State finals will be held on the same day, which will make for a thrilling build up to the National Final.

Major regional events in 2018 include: Bendigo Cup 6 July; Shepparton Cup 4 August; Healesville Cup 9 September; Geelong Cup 26 October; Ballarat Cup 8 December; Sale Cup 26 December. Major events for 2019 include: Warragul Cup 12 January; Traralgon Cup 26 January; Cranbourne Cup 9 February; Horsham Cup 9 March; Warrnambool Cup 1 May.

GRV’s CEO Alan Clayton said the 2018-19 program would deliver an entertaining year of racing with the best dogs in Australia racing regularly in Victoria.

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

“We have 13 racing clubs in Victoria which put on race meetings every week, including major feature events that attract thousands of people every year,” Mr Clayton said. “GRV continues to focus on greyhound welfare and racing integrity, while maximising racing opportunities and prizemoney for participants. We are the biggest supplier of racing code in Australia, and this 2018-19 program reinforces our commitment to providing great entertainment that attracts crowds and underpins a thriving sport.” He added that greyhound racing was important to Victoria as it contributed $400 million to Victoria’s economy each year, and a major part of that impact flowed through to country Victoria. The 2018-19 program promotes racing in regional areas, with 11 Country Cups and special events, while preserving the existing program at Sandown Park and The Meadows, which host the majority of Victoria’s Group 1 races. Sandown Park hosts the richest greyhound race in the world, the $600,000 Melbourne Cup on 23 November, the same night as the Group 1 Bold Trease for stayers. The Australian Cup

Other key initiatives include: • The Gippsland, Warrnambool Seaside and Bendigo Easter Carnivals have all been confirmed for 2018-19.

• The Warragul St Leger and the Western Districts Derby (Ballarat) have been granted group status by the GCA. • The Shepparton Cup moves back one week with the final to be held on Saturday 4 August, a week after the Group 1 Maturity Classic at The Meadows. GRV’s Chairman Bernie Carolan congratulated the clubs and GRV’s racing department for pulling together another great year of racing. “The program maintains our commitment to 23 race meetings over a standard week and accommodates dogs at all levels and stages of their racing careers, from maiden and aged races to group-level,” Mr Carolan said. “The 2018-19 racing year will be the first financial year that the full effects of GRV’s $2.55million boost to prizemoney kicks in,” he said. “This funding boost for participants, which was introduced in November 2017, directly focuses on increasing prize money to be shared between owners and trainers at the lower levels of racing.” All 1192 race meetings for the 2018-19 racing season can be viewed on GRV’s racing portal, FastTrack at fasttrackgrv.org.au

National Adoption Day – many dogs and many people By Louise Martin

Many dogs and many people, a recipe for disaster? No, a recipe for great success and that is how the National Adoption Day ingredients played out on 29 April.

“Staff, volunteers and the community. This is a combined effort and one that brings great pleasure to all involved,” he said.

As all the volunteers were gathering around to hear how they were to match up each dog with their forever home; the atmosphere was electric.

Mr Carolan paid a special tribute to the National Adoption Day ambassador Todd McKenney, who attended at The Meadows, and was simply “blown away” by the whole experience.

The 69 dogs were gathering downstairs as the majority of the 810 registered participants streamed through the gates at The Meadows in the hope that they would be taking home with them one of the beautiful greyhounds available on the day. A world first, the National Adoption Day was held in every state over the weekend; with more than 200 greyhounds adopted across Australia.

And joy there was for the people, who came from all walks of life, taking home their newest family member – with their being many a wagging tail as well – all over Australia – on a day which will be remembered by all whom attended.

MAY 2018

Greyhound Racing Victorian Chairman, Bernie Carolan, thanked everyone at the event for their passion and dedication in assisting the retired racing dogs to find a home.

Todd, a greyhound owner of many years spent much of the day talking with the families who were looking for that special canine, spoke of the joy they bring to many people’s lives.

It was a very successful evening with Chief’s Sidekick, trained by Darren Brown, winning the GOTBA Abba Kennels Cup (515m), while we also presented the following awards relating to the 2017 calendar year: Metropolitan Brood Matron of the Year - Dirty Angel Metropolitan Stud Dog - Barcia Bale Victorian Brood Matron - Easy Angel Victorian Stud Dog - Fabregas Our thanks to studmaster Paul Westerveld, who donated a service to Fabregas that we auctioned on the night, the highest bidder being Spolly’s Syndications. The silent auction for the six breaking in courses donated by Keyon kennels, Doctors kennels and Casrakay kennels were very much in demand and we also appreciate the generosity of these breakers. Many people took the opportunity to join the GOTBA on the night and a new member Kim Watson was lucky enough to win the $1000 spinning wheel prize that was given to a member who attended and was present at the draw.

A females-only race received free stud services from Dundee Osprey and Moreira for first second and third place getters. Abba Kennels, which sponsors the GOTBA Cups, were presented with a plaque and flowers to acknowledge 20 years of sponsorship and support to our association. Margaret Thomas, who always donates beautiful presentation rugs for the winner of the GOTBA Cup, was acknowledged for her support. There were many door prizes drawn throughout the evening and the whole night ran smoothly thanks to Rob Testa, who gives his time freely to MC our Supernites. Our committee would like to thank the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club for its continued support of this special night and

also for their willingness to provide a venue for us to conduct our regular meetings. The Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds has been released and, although it is not exactly what we recommended, it is only through constant consultations and days spent showing the writers of the Code around greyhound establishments that it has changed dramatically and is now a much better document than the original draft. On another matter, we are very happy to see the success of the finish on lure at Geelong - and that it has been introduced to the inside track as well as the outside track - and been strongly supported by trainers. We believe that a reward based system is essential and should be introduced to more tracks across the state, so that people have a choice of either finish on or the catching pen. With a reduced number of race dogs available over the next twelve months, it is imperative that we keep greyhounds racing by reducing the failing-to-chase numbers. The finish on lure does this, as the completion of catching the lure with other dogs and being rewarded stimulates their natural instincts to chase, and many trainers are reporting great improvement in their dogs’ keenness to chase, after racing on the finish on lure. We are continuing to push for scientific evidence to enhance track safety, so that our dogs race longer and have as few injuries as possible. We will be running more surveys specific to what members’ main issues are and any suggestions they might have to help rectify these problems. Results of our first survey has been presented to the Industry Consultative Group (ICG) for discussion so that the regulators become fully informed about the most pressing current issues that affect our members. To our members, it is important you know that your input into these surveys is very much appreciated, so please take the time to be involved in the development of our sport when you receive surveys from the GOTBA, which are sent via email. Now that our most recent survey has provided us with a general overview of member concerns, future surveys will be more topic-specific.

ony Duncan took out the honour of being named Trainer of the Year at the Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club’s awards night on 21 April.

Duncan is no stranger to the award having taken out the gong five years ago, but this one came with an emotional acceptance interview after being called forward to accept the award. Club manager Carl McGrath said there was no one more worthy of the award than Duncan, who is continuing to train greyhounds while battling cancer. ‘‘He’s a terrific bloke and really popular, as long as I can remember he’s been training greyhounds and he’s been around a long time,’’ McGrath said. ‘‘This is his biggest win for himself and a big honour in a trying year for him.’’

Michael Ellis received the staff appreciation award from McGrath and his senior colleagues at the club. ‘‘The staff vote on the trainer that makes their job easier and it’s nice to have them come here and be supportive of the staff,’’ McGrath said. In a surprise for the Tremellen family it received a recognition for the family’s long-term involvement in the sport. Kel Tremellen was a founding member of the Shepparton club in 1973 with four generations of the family having been involved. ‘‘The Tremellens didn’t know about their honour, all they knew was that the club wanted them to come here for a reason and it was great, so they’ve got an honour garden out the front now,’’ McGrath said. Joe La Rosa was presented with the Young Achiever award.

“He’s always been a dog with a big motor but in his last two he’s really timed the start, that’s been the big difference. We’re hoping it’s not a fluke and that he continues to do it.” Last start group 1 Sky Racing Galaxy winner Rippin’ Sam sits 2nd behind his litter brother on the Lizrene (715m) standings. He will also head to Speed Star however won’t be a chance of meeting his brother in a match race.

Elevated, bred and trained by Harry Manolitsis, has recorded the fastest time over 515 metres at Sandown Park in 2018 with a run of 29.116sec on 1 April. Manolitsis, of Pearcedale, also bred 2016 Golden Easter Egg winner, Moreira.

“Yes, he’ll be there. He’ll be better suited over 715m.”

Elevated is a younger half-sister to Bewildering and Extreme Magic, the former winning both Speed Star events over 515m at Sandown Park in 2017.

Tornado Tears joined the kennel in February and has delivered on what he promised in the early stages of his career in his home state of New South Wales. Britton hopes he can maintain the early speed that he’s shown in his last two outings.

be better conditioned compared to when he debuted over the distance,” revealed Britton.

Meanwhile, Tornado Tears has quickly announced himself as one of the country’s fastest greyhounds and will get his chance to prove it at Speed Star. His most recent start on Anzac Day Eve was breathtaking, he led all of the way to set a time of 33.919 over 595m. It backed up his stunning staying debut three weeks earlier in a flying 41.204 over 715m, just half a length off Miata’s longstanding track record. Those times have him at the top of both the Racecallers (595m) and Lizrene (715m) standings. There’s been great debate on what distance he will compete over, and the Sandown GRC’s Facebook poll resulted in 66% of voters favouring the 715m Lizrene event. However, trainer Rob Britton says his intention is to set Tornado Tears for the Racecallers (595m). “At this stage I’m leaning towards the 595m. Simple reason being I don’t really want to put him over 715m until the Sandown Cup. I want to get some miles into his legs before he gets there, he’ll

The Sandown Greyhound Racing Club held a special Anzac Day eve race meeting on Tuesday, 24 April.

The Sandown GRC Committee with Anzac Day eve guests.

The crowd gathers for one-minute silence.

Tony Flores has been reunited with his best friend, Amity Flame

When ill-health forced him to retire from the sport and move from his property to a smaller place in Traralgon with his wife Patricia, Tony could no longer look after Jack and made the decision to send him to GAP. His daughter Renee Flores had other ideas. She saw how worried Tony was about sending Jack to GAP, and secretly retrieved him, taking him back to her house in Churchill not far from Traralgon. “Dad was worried about him because he isn’t a young dog and he kept asking me to check the GAP website to see if he had been adopted,” Renee said. “He has put three or four other dogs into GAP, but Jack is the only one he kept asking about.” Jack was still on the website and Renee thought he might make a good pet for her six-year-old son Josh, so she drove to the GAP kennel at Baxter, returned with the greyhound and eventually sprung the surprise on her father.

Flame a Flores family treasure By Suzanne McKenzie

The greyhound, also known as Jack, has been with him since he was a pup and was his most successful, and favourite, greyhound in 50 years as a greyhound owner and trainer.

Tony started training greyhounds when he was 18, pursuing his interest off and on until he was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. Now 70, he is happy to have Jack back in the family and is proud of what they achieved over the years. With more than $100,000 in prizemoney to his name, Amity Flame was a very good chaser, with his biggest win being the $25,000 TopCat Video Cup in 2013, which he led by 10 lengths all the way. A broken hock prematurely ended his racing career. Surgery returned him to the track, but Tony thought the strain was too much and decided it was time to retire him to the couch. Now the handy chaser is back in the Flores family where he belongs.

he committee of the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club has voted unanimously to abolish gate entry fees going forward. This was a decision made to encourage local and visiting families to have a great night out, enjoy the sport of greyhound racing and have a delicious, value-for-money meal provided by caterers Parnassus. “Entry fees for participants has been a bone of contention for some time,” said Warragul GRC President, Bob Iredale. “Whilst the loss in revenue is considerable the Club has found itself in

a position where it can absorb some of the costs; a significant sponsorship agreement that will be announced soon has provided us with an opportunity to remove the entry fee.” Warragul races every Tuesday night and Thursday afternoon, with a great variety of catering available at every race meeting. “The club also has had a number of events where we have had free entry and the feedback from the community has been fantastic,” said Warragul GRC Manager, Adrian Scott.

ippsland trainer Tony Flores thought his seven-year-old greyhound Amity Flame was gone for good when he sent him to the Greyhound Adoption Program.

She had considered taking Jack before he went to GAP but was worried he might not get along with her 14 year-old cat Taia. As it turns out, Jack is fine with the cat but “she is a spoilt little princess. She got her nose put out of joint when my son was born so I knew she wasn’t going to be happy about this.”

Proud owner Wendy Saatoff makes her handling debut with Diesel’s A Rebel.

“All of my family and Simon’s family were there. I had a group of friends come and it was great to see everyone. My mum was taking happy snaps everywhere. Everyone was really proud and really happy. It was a great day, we actually stayed all day. Once it was done I was like ‘that wasn’t so bad.’ Everybody was great, helping me to kennel them and everything. It was like everyone must have known and everyone was really, really nice. I think they could tell it wasn’t easy being my first time but I was really rapt with how everyone was. It was really good.” Adding to the thrill of the day was the fact that Saathoff had bred and reared Diesel’s A Rebel, a member of the first litter the couple had bred. While a relative newcomer to the sport, her passion for all aspects of greyhound racing has grown quickly since first being introduced to the greyhound breed.

here were plenty of butterflies beforehand, but Wendy Saathoff’s first day as a greyhound handler is a day she’ll long remember.

Last Sunday 22 April, Saathoff and her partner Simon headed to Sandown with a team of three chasers. Before a large contingent of excited family and friends, Saathoff made her handling debut with Diesel’s a A Rebel, a striking 34kg white and black chaser who can get a little excited on race day.

“The nerves were terrible, I couldn’t eat!” she said once it was all over. “He’d never been to Sandown either so for both of us it was a new adventure. I was so nervous, all I kept thinking was my dog is going to be naughty and take off and I’m going to be flying like Mary Poppins.”

16

Looking up into the grandstand and seeing so many supporters helped to calm the nerves, as did the support of the staff, stewards and fellow handlers.

“Simon has been in it for years and years and years and we got together a number of years ago. He had the greyhounds already, but I’d already fallen in love with them through all my customers coming in with greyhounds. “I own a pet supply store where I sell fresh pet meat so I have a lot of clients that have greyhounds. I went from not knowing much about the breed to falling in love them, then I decided that I was going to give racing a go. I do all of the rearing and loving of the dogs you could say, and then I decided to go for my trainers license which I passed last Tuesday. I got to handle for the first time in a race with a dog I bred which was great.” The passion and enthusiasm for the sport has ensured each of their runners has plenty of interested onlookers, especially since so many people have shared in the greyhound’s journey to the track. “Any of our customers can go in and play with them and watch their progress. Everyone follows my dogs, it’s been really good for helping people realise that greyhounds really are a beautiful breed.” Diesel’s A Rebel finished fourth in his race, a result which delighted Saathoff particularly since Simon handled their other runner, Axel’s A Rebel which finished behind them, giving her bragging rights over her partner. “Yeah, all the way home,” she said, laughing. “It’s been heaps of fun, I love it.”

RV and racing clubs kept 2,715 youngsters busy, entertained and well fed during the school holidays.

This year’s Greyhound Holiday Fun Days program was the biggest yet. GRV and 12 clubs worked together to put on free activities, competitions and giveaways. This year’s theme, The Greyhound Games, was chosen to put the focus on sport and other physical activities. It was also a nod to the Commonwealth Games which were held on the Gold Coast over the same two-week period.

Sporting activities included miniature hurdles, tug-ofwar, bowling, running races and handball. There were also plenty of non-sporting activities, including colouring books, karaoke and plaster moulds. GRV’s mascot Turbo the Greyhound was also on-hand and Easter egg hunts were very popular. A highlight of the day was the chance to parade greyhounds onto the track, then watch the race from behind the boxes. Names went into the draw and eight lucky children were chosen.

MAY 2018

The competition runs over four weeks at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club commencing Thursday 3 May. There’s $1,000 up for grabs each week and after each week the tips will be reset, so you don’t need to worry if you have a bad week. On Sandown Cup night (Thursday 24 May) the invited participant who is the Top Dog Tipper for the night will be awarded the $7,500 major prize.

Plus, this year, there’s a bonanza night on Thursday 10 May (Bill Collins Speed Star night) where not only will there be the usual $1,000 weekly prize up for grabs, but there’ll also be a special $5,000 prize for the on course Top Dog Tipper of the night, and an incredible $25,000 – yes, that’s right, $25,000! – to be shared by anyone who can successfully select the winners of all twenty head to head match races! APPLY FOR DNA TODAY! GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early. For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows:

GRV’s new VicGreys program is generating up to $1.4m in bonuses to Victorian breeders and owners across 1,900 Victorian races each year. Full details at: grv.org.au/vicgreys

GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.

For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

DID YOU KNOW

1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.

A

lan Ferguson, the man who bred 2018 Launching Pad winner Beast Unleashed, believes that a key to breeding greyhounds is beginning their education from a young age.

Fun of the chase starts early

“Once they’re about six weeks old and vaccinated, I like to get out the rubber balls, teddy bears, squeaky toys or milk cartons, and teach them to enjoy chasing those types of things right from the start,” said Ferguson, who is based at Girgarre, near Shepparton in northern Victoria. While potential superstar Beast Unleashed is the star of the 25-month-old Barcia Bale – Little Miss Hap litter, nine out of 10 pups named have raced so far, with seven of them winning.

ICG consulted on Breeding Containment Strategy By Dennis Timewell and Andrew Copley

T

he Chair welcomed a new face to the ICG at its most recent meeting on 17 April - National Coursing Association Life Member, Heather Villinger - who has extensive industry experience and replaces Peter Craig as a representative of the coursing fraternity.

Also raised was the subject of ear branding, and the temporary pain involved for pups. Given GRV’s emphasis on animal welfare, an action item to emerge was that GRV would consider ‘topical’ pain relief and assess how other industries manage this issue.

A special guest at this particular meeting was Geoff Miles of the Greyhound Owners Trainers & Breeders Association, who advised the ICG about results of a recent survey conducted by the GOTBA, to its members, on key racing matters.

The ICG discussed a paper provided by GRV management on the topic of greyhounds being transferred by a trainer once a penalty is handed down or a serious charge is made. It was agreed that it is important that the penalty applied for serious offences by the RADB had to be meaningful in the real world, including by having a financial impact on the person who committed the offence. Thus, there may need to be some restrictions on transfers. While there were differing opinions in the room about what should be deemed a ‘serious’ charge, it was also suggested that the circumstances of a partner or family member training on a different property may be different to the case where the same property would be used. If GRV chooses to address this issue, a full formal consultation process will apply, as it does for any other rule change.

Miles advised that the GOTBA would conduct surveys with its members on a periodic basis, and the ICG welcomed the concept of results being shared. GRV advised the ICG that breeding of around 600 litters in Victoria each year is the target number to ensure there are sufficient dogs available to supply the state’s racing program and, at the same time be consistent with optimal rehoming outcomes. After a drop in breeding numbers during 2016/17, numbers are now back up to a point at which GRV estimates will equate to a total of just over 600 litters for the 2017/18 period. As such, GRV is now looking to implement a ‘breeding containment strategy’ to avoid excessive pressure on the Greyhound Adoption Program.

Heather Villinger brings coursing intel to the ICG.

As such, the ICG agreed it is appropriate to consider restricting breeding among inexperienced breeders through a categorisation process such as an L plate, P plate and open licence rating, with quotas applied. It was noted that there is difficulty in assessing the ability of a breeder over one or two litters, particularly when the pups were sold to a range of owners using a range of rearers and breakers. The need for breeder education was highlighted, with GRV to seek advice on how its current breeding education modules can be improved. It was suggested that future training and education include workshops and, where possible, a mentoring system be implemented. The ICG panel comprises of Bernie Carolan (Chair), Dr Barbara Backhoy, Deborah Churchill, Steven Clarke, Tracey Corneille, Terry Davis, Sheldon Hamilton, Brian Jones, Nicole Lund, Daniel Nugent, Sandra Reed, Heather Villinger and Tom Welsh.

FREE TRIALS AT THE MEADOWS The Meadows Manager Marg Long said that the decision was resolved at the club’s most recent Board Meeting. “On behalf of the Chairman and Directors at The Meadows, we would like to confirm that all arm and pen trials across all Meadows trial sessions will now be free. It has always been the club’s aim to offer the best service possible to all industry participants and we pride ourselves on being industry leaders in that regard,” Long said. “Without the hard-working greyhound trainers of this industry, The Meadows wouldn’t be able to operate to the standard that we do, and we see the removal of our trial fee as another way to assist trainers in their operations. We once again thank all our trainers for their ongoing support of The Meadows.”

TRAINERS PLEASE NOTE: The team at GRV are currently working on the back end of the Fasttrack system to remove the automated trial fee, but in the meantime simply place your online bookings as usual but DO NOT select “Pay online now” for any of your trial bookings at The Meadows.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

The Meadows have announced that all trials at the track are now free.

MAY 2018

In 2016, the Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria appointed an Industry Consultative Group (ICG), with members having appropriate experience and diversity across a number of areas. The ICG meets every two months to discuss major issues facing the industry, out of which suggestions are forwarded to GRV’s Board for consideration.

First-time courser returns to the circle and goes 'ka-pow'!

A

fter a string of seven unplaced starts in a row on the circle, Popowski entered the coursing arena for the first time at the National Coursing Association’s Catch on to Coursing meeting on 15 April. And it’s fair to say the experience proved stunning with Popowski returning to the circle to record consecutive wins at Traralgon (best of night) and Warragul.

Q. How did Popowski fare at the Catch on to Coursing event? Peter Craig: Popowski and her brother Macalister Ike won both their heats and finals at Longwood (on 15 April). My wife told me how much they both had enjoyed the coursing after catching them as she couldn’t get them away from the catching pen. I had to give her a hand dragging them back to the car! Q. How was Popowski able to turn around her form? PC: It is a confidence issue with her and getting two runs after the lure with little or no interference made all the difference. And following on from that she drew the red on the circle (Traralgon) for the first time in five months. She can begin but is wary of dogs running out at her after some unfortunate race incidents, so the change in confidence was the difference.

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

Q. How often do these sorts of form turnarounds occur as a result of greyhounds going coursing?

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Q. There was a period of eight days between the Catch on to Coursing event and Popowski’s Traralgon win. Is that the ideal amount of time before returning to the circle after going coursing? PC: I can recall being told after I had some coursing success many years ago to keep my dog on the lead for nine days and then produce him back on the track and see him run a PB. The days on the lead would allow the dog to get over the strains of three courses in the day and bring him to a peak for his target track performance - oh the fun of the sting!

Trainer Peter Craig, President of the National Coursing Association, provides an insight into how it all unfolded in this Q&A.

22

time coursing trainers used to set an out of form track dog that had success on the coursing field for many a sting (with bookmakers) when they took them back to the track.

PC: They are fairly common throughout the coursing season, with the coursing form students keen to invest when a dog turns around recent poor track form with a winning performance on the coursing field and then heads back to the track. Old

Q. A drop in form aside, what are some other reasons trainers take their greyhounds coursing? PC: Trainers take their dogs coursing for a number of reasons, not least of all being there are no middle boxes to be drawn, so the main benefit to many dogs is the lack of interference and the regaining of confidence. I like to take pups for two reasons, firstly for the fact they can race in their puppy class for the entire season and don’t get upgraded after a win to then struggle against experience dogs, and secondly I find if they get three runs in a day, it takes them to a higher fitness level, one that they don’t get with just one trial or race per day. This can also assist older dogs reaching peak fitness. Female greyhounds also can benefit from the fact we mostly race maidens against their own sex, so they don’t get knocked over by a dog who could be 10 kilograms bigger. Note: Catch on to Coursing meetings are held at the beginning of the coursing season each year. Victoria’s 2018 coursing season officially kicked off on 29 April at Benalla.

New Aged Prize Money meetings to increase opportunities Greyhound Racing Victoria will this month introduce a new type of race meeting that will give consideration to each greyhound’s current Aged Prize Money (APM) value.

What trainers need to know:

Aged Prize Money race meetings are aimed at increasing racing opportunities for greyhounds racing in Victoria, which was a common issue raised by participants at the GRV grading consultation sessions (Sept/Oct 2017), conducted at all 13 race clubs by Chief Grader, Andrew Mills.

1. Greyhounds will rely solely on their APM value to gain selection;

Why are we doing this? Given GRV’s commitment to increasing racing opportunities, the new APM meeting type is aimed at exploring an alternate race selection process, as each current method has the possibility of preventing greyhounds from gaining a regular start in a race, which at times can be confusing. For example: 1. A Grade 3 greyhound at a track relies on nominations of Grade 4 or better greyhounds being nominated to provide it a chance of racing at that venue.

3. Tier 3 and Rank Limit meetings apply different methods of selection, despite catering for similar levels of greyhounds. What are APM meetings and how will they work?

See table below: 0-30 days ago,

The total AGED prizemoney is the sum of the values above

3. Only Maidens will have ‘order of entry rights’, as these greyhounds that are yet to race have not won any prize money. Greyhounds with one or two starts only will be also be given preference. 4. Reserves will be allocated in order of their APM value, that is if 2 races are programmed of the same grade and distance, then the two reserves in the higher value race will also be listed as runners in the lower value race; 5. New race grades will be applied to identify the races each greyhound has competed which are as follows: a. MAPM – Maiden APM event b. 7APM – Grade 7 APM event (one win) c. 6APM – Grade 6 APM event (two wins) d. APM – Open APM event e. RWAPM – Restricted Win APM event 6. For APM grade events at Provincial Full Stakes and Provincial Half Stakes meetings - Where a greyhound has an APM value of $2,000+, and its APM value is more than 50% of the lowest selected greyhound (eighth greyhound) within the event, then the highest APM greyhound shall not be drawn. Eg. Dog (1) has an APM value of $10,000, then Dog (8) APM value must be at least $5,000. T his rule shall not apply to race types MAPM, 7APM, 6APM and RWAPM or any meetings conducted that award Metropolitan Full Stakes. 7. APM Meetings will be non-penalty for winning greyhounds that are Grade 5 or higher when conducted at Provincial Half Stakes level. APM meetings will be programmed from May 2018 around Victoria on a trial basis to monitor the participation rates, suitability, popularity, and possible impacts to improve racing opportunities for every racing greyhound.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

APM is each greyhound’s Aged Prize Money value which is determined by how much prize money a greyhound has won in its racing career, both current and historic amounts. This value allows greyhounds that have won prize money throughout their racing career to be considered against other greyhounds within the racing population of a similar value in a fair and transparent manner.

2. There will be NO ‘order of entry rights’ for graded greyhounds applied (ie. last start placed, dropping grade, reserve last start etc.);

MAY 2018

2. Tier 3 requires the greyhound to be ranked 250+ and not have broken the time standard in up to its last 4 starts (and not raced outside the excluded interstate tracks).

The new APM meeting type is now ready for implementing into the Racing program with several key changes.

RACING STATISTICS - MARCH 2018

2017

2018

PROSECUTIONS OVERVIEW Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board (RADB) Ian Cockerell - RADB Hearing 21 March 2018 – GAR69(A) (1) 'Gregorovitch' at Sandown on 15 March 2018 - Stewards charged Gregorovitch with failing to pursue the lure with due commitment. Mr. Cockerell appealed the decision. The RADB dismissed the appeal. Shane Whitney - RADB Hearing 21 March 2018, GAR 71 ‘Sleater’ at Sandown on 15 March 2018 – Stewards charged ‘Sleater’ with an unsatisfactory performance. Mr Whitney appealed the decision. The RADB dismissed the appeal. Dennis Brown - RADB Hearing 23 March 2018, GAR69(A) (1) 'Dashing Max' at Sale on 18 March 2018 - Stewards charged Dashing Max with failing to pursue the lure with due commitment. Mr. Brown appealed the decision. The RADB dismissed the appeal. Evan Keene – RADB Hearing 27 March 2018 – GAR 83 (2) (3), failed to present the greyhound ‘Richardo Sanchez’ free of any prohibited substance (arsenic) for an event at the Bendigo meeting held on 31 October 2017. The RADB imposed a disqualification for a period of 6 months wholly suspended pending no further breach of GAR 83 in the next 2 years. In addition, ‘Richardo Sanchez’ was disqualified from race 1 at Bendigo on 31 October 2017.

GRV appealed the penalty and VCAT decided to impose a $1000 fine (with $500 of that amount suspended for 2 years) and recommended Mr Meyer write a letter of apology and undertake an anger management course. The VCAT Member stated that if it was not for Mr Meyer’s personal circumstances, a period of suspension would have been imposed. The VCAT Member also agreed with GRV’s submission that such conduct is no longer tolerated in the sports industry. Peter Trim: Mr Trim appeared before the RADB on 18 July 2017 on three animal welfare charges (GAR 106(1)(a), GAR 106(1) (c) and LRR 42.1) and a treatment record charge (GAR 84A(1)). On the animal welfare charges, the RADB imposed a 9 month disqualification, with 3 months suspended for 12 months, and imposed a $500 fine on the treatment record charge. Mr Trim appealed the RADB findings of guilt and penalty to VCAT. VCAT again found Mr Trim guilty of all charges. However, VCAT reduced Mr Trim’s penalty to a 6 month suspension, wholly suspended on the animal welfare charges (GAR 106(1)(a), GAR 106(1)(c) and LRR 42.1) and a $500 fine on the treatment record charge (GAR 84A(1)). Jason Stemmer: On 9 November 2016, the RADB imposed a 12 month disqualification (with 9 months suspended for 12 months) on Mr Stemmer for breaches of GAR 83(1A) (administration) and GAR 83(2) (presentation), with the prohibited substance being cobalt.

Matthew Clark - RADB Hearing 29 March 2018, GAR 69, 'Pancake' at Traralgon on 23 March 2018 - Stewards charged Pancake with Marring. Mr. Clark appealed the decision. The RADB dismissed the appeal.

Mr Stemmer appealed the matter to VCAT. As the parties agreed that outcome of the matter of Kavanagh v O’Brien would be relevant to the issues in dispute in this case, the matter was adjourned until that case was resolved. The outcome of Kavanagh v O’Brien was favourable to GRV in the context of establishing the charges before VCA in this matter.

Patrick Leonard – RADB Hearing 29 March 2018 - GAR83(2)(3) failing to present the greyhound ‘Mustang Sammy’ free of any prohibited substance (Caffeine) for an event at the Cranbourne meeting on 25 October 2017. The RADB imposed a 3 months’ suspension but that 2 months of that period be suspended

The matter was eventually heard before VCAT on 15 March 2018. Mr Stemmer decided to plead guilty to the administration (GAR 83(1A)) and presentation (GAR 83(2)) charges. In all of Mr Stemmer’s circumstances, VCAT decided to wholly suspend the 12 month disqualification.

*NEW GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

Welfare Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare

Local Rule 42.6: Medical and Behavioural exceptions Local Rule 42.6 requires that an owner makes all reasonable efforts to re-home their fit and healthy greyhound, including minimum specified re-homing efforts. If these re-homing attempts are unsuccessful, and a decision to euthanase is made, LR 42.6 requires owners to submit a Notice of Intention (NoI) to Euthanase at least 14 days prior. This NoI is a FastTrack form found under the ‘My Dogs’ tab.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

In cases where a greyhound is suffering from a serious medical condition or has significant behavioural issues that make it unsuitable for re-homing as a pet, LR 42.6 provides some exceptions (exemptions) to the re-homing and NoI requirements of the rule. To assist participants with compliance with the rule, below is some information about the requirements when seeking a medical or behavioural exemption.

32

On-Track Seminar Series The next topic in GRV’s on-track seminar series will commence in mid May 2018 and will be a refresher information session on Local Rule 42.6. The seminar will also provide information about the Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI). Animal welfare staff will be at the race meetings listed below to introduce the topic, so please feel free to come and chat to the team, especially if you have any questions about LR 42.6. Ballarat - Monday 14 May (Day) Bendigo - Wednesday 16 May (Twilight) Warragul - Thursday 17 May (Day) Traralgon - Monday 21 May (Twilight)

Behavioural exemption

Cranbourne - Saturday 26 May (Twilight)

An owner may be exempt from the re-homing requirements of the rule if a registered veterinarian certifies that the greyhound is displaying significant behavioural characteristics that negatively impact on its suitability as a pet, including aggression towards humans or other animals. If a behavioural exemption is sought, owners must first complete the 28- day wind down period. A veterinary certificate for a behavioural exemption will only be accepted if the veterinarian certifies that the greyhound is unsuitable for re-homing due to a significant behavioural issue in the form prescribed under the rule.

Horsham - Tuesday 29 May (Twilight)

To support participants in compliance with the rule when seeking a behavioural exemption, GRV has updated the approved Greyhound Re-homing Unsuitability Certificate template that contains the required certification under the rule (see below for information on where to find this form). Please note that participants seeking a behavioural exemption are still required to submit an NoI 14 days prior to any euthanasia, and a euthanasia certificate after the fact. The Greyhound Re-homing Unsuitability Certificate must be provided to support the NoI.

Healesville - Friday 1 June (Day)

Focus group discussions on the socialisation of greyhounds You may have seen an advertisement in the March 2018 issue of Greyhound Monthly inviting participants to take part in research being undertaken by the University of Melbourne, through the Animal Welfare Science Centre (AWSC). This research is being funded by GRV as part of its education and research frameworks to find out what participants think about socialisation and how it impacts on racing success – i.e. early vs post racing socialisation.

Medical exemption In the case of a euthanasia on serious medical grounds, to be exempt from the re-homing and NoI requirements of the rule, you must ensure that you have certification from a registered veterinarian that the greyhound is suffering from an incurable condition or an injury that causes significant pain or discomfort or a marked reduction in quality of life. GRV has also updated the approved Euthanasia Certificate that contains the required certification under the rule. To ensure compliance with the rule if seeking a medical exemption, GRV recommends that owners take a copy of the approved form to your veterinary appointment. While many veterinarians may hold copies of this form, it is ultimately the owner’s responsibility to ensure compliance with LR 42.6. GRV has a participant support package for LR 42.6 which includes a fact sheet and frequently asked questions, a rehoming checklist and copies of the approved templates for the various certificates. For a copy of the support package, including approved forms, please call GRV on 8329 1100 or email retirements@grv.org.au. The information and forms can also be found at www.greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/new-local-rule-42-6/.

Regarding the advertisement, which included logos for several organisations including Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR), I would like to clarify that none of these groups are associated with this piece of research. Rather, they are partners generally in AWSC, and research conducted by one organisation under the umbrella of the Centre does not directly impact on policy or regulation by another member organisation - so DEDJTR has no direct involvement in this socialisation research.

Racing Injury Working Party By Molly Haines GRV has set up a working party to review all catastrophic and major injuries on greyhound tracks in Victoria, with the purpose of providing safety improvements at GRV Clubs and private facilities.

The Racing Injury Working Party (RIWP) is headed by Acting General Manager Racing, Scott Robins and is made up of relevant GRV staff who look for trends or regular occurrences in racing incidents. The RIWP meets once a month and, following its commencement in August 2017, has driven operational improvements at GRV facilities as well as individual kennel inspections to aid in improved animal welfare standards moving forward. All Greyhound Recovery Initiative cases (refer to ad above), including take-ups or denials, are also reviewed by the RIWP. MAY 2018
