Dyna Patty dynamite in Speed Star spectacular By Michael Floyd
D
yna Patty created history on 10 May at Sandown Park when she became the first female greyhound to win the Bill Collins Speed Star (515m).
The Speed Star is a match race series bringing the fastest greyhounds in the country together. The entire card of racing incorporated 40 greyhounds competing head to head across 20 matches, with a race approximately every eight minutes. Drawn against series favourite Poke The Bear, Dyna Patty jumped on even terms and accelerated to the lead past the post the first time. Poke The Bear took advantage of its inside draw to retake the lead through the turn, however Dyna Patty showed powered down the back straight to again assume control into the final turn.
Britton also took out the night’s opening event with Not Available winning his second match race series and collecting $10,000, and when Slingshot Gypsy won a match in the final series it took Team Britton’s prize money tally for the evening to $95,500 – more than half of the $190,000 up for grabs across the night. The Speed Star’s unique format opened up a number of different bet types, with multis proving a huge hit with punters, including more than $11,000 wagered on a bet type named the ‘James Van de Maat Multi’ in honour of RSN’s young race caller.
In a thrilling run to the line, Poke The Bear rallied along the rail but couldn’t catch Dyna Patty, stopping the clock at 29.411 and claiming the Bill Collins Speed Star crown. Connections picked up $20,000 for running the fastest time in the series, on top of the $5000 for winning her head to head match.

Robert Britton had a night to remember, claiming the night’s other two features with littermates Tornado Tears claiming the Racecallers (595m) and Rippin’s Sam the Lizrene (715m). The duo were brilliant in the wintry conditions, stopping the clock in 33.780 and 41.475 respectively. In fact, Britton trifectaed the Lizrene with Barcali and Back On Lava filling the minor placings.

S
andown’s 2018 Top Dog Tipping competition reached its exciting conclusion at the RSN Sandown Cup on 24 May.
In a tightly contested evening, there were two winners who were unable to be split by count back. Congratulations to Carol Van Eerden and Darren Kennedy, who shared the Top Dog Tipping crown after a miraculous dead heat in which they tipped the same number of winners, second and third places, and tipped the exact same three placings in the Sandown Cup as the final tie breaker. Unfortunately, Michael Edwards, who also tipped the same number of winners, was defeated on count back when it went
all the way down to his third place tie breaker in the Sandown Cup. A big congratulations also to Ray Wall who was the final online weekly tipping winner and receives $1000. Over the four weeks of the competition there were nine major prize winners including an amazing effort on Sandown Cup Heats night when David Wall picked the card for a perfect score and, on Speed Star night, Jeff Britton tipped successfully and received $5,000. The task of taking off the $25,000 prize for tipping the card on Speed Star night was beyond all and failed to go off but Top Dog Tipping will be back again for another opportunity for more (hopefully profitable) fun.
Tornado Tears scores a hard-working victory over Rippin’ Sam (8) and Quick Jagger (3).
‘Batman’ prevails in battle of Britton By Michael Floyd
T
ornado Tears showed why he’s regarded as greyhound racing’s next big thing after prevailing in a thrilling finish to the $250,000 RSN Sandown Cup (715m) at Sandown Park on 24 May. But the well supported favourite – he opened at $26 in early markets before jumping at $2 – was made to earn his victory. Beginning cleanly from box 7, the Robert Britton-trained star settled behind kennelmates Benali and Quick Jagger and the trio soon established a gap on their rivals. Tornado Tears made his move down the back straight and appeared set to take control of the race, however he lost momentum attempting to take a gap between the leaders. Meanwhile, Tornado Tears’ litter brother Rippin’ Sam began to make his move. Spotting the leaders 10 lengths with 300m to run, he unleashed an almighty finishing burst to close to within a length turning for home before finding trouble himself and checking wide on the home turn.
“I think he’s an outstanding dog. We saw in his first couple of runs where he went 41.20 and 41.30 that on a fast night and with perfect conditions he probably could break the track record
Britton will now aim for the Group 1 Gold Cup (710m) at Albion Park in Brisbane in June for his burgeoning team of stayers. Tornado Tears was all smiles after winning his first Group 1. Below: RSN’s John Thwaites presents Robert Britton with the Sandown Cup. Photos by: Clint Anderson.

Affectionately known as ‘Batman’ due to his distinctive markings, Tornado Tears is fast developing an enthusiastic fan base with some pundits believing Tornado Tears has the potential to be a once in a generation stayer. Despite his relative inexperience over 715m – his RSN Sandown Cup victory was just his third attempt over the ‘half-mile’ – he has already recorded the 2nd and 4th fastest times over the distance and has claimed the sport’s greatest stayers race. While Britton refused to be drawn on comparisons to previous champions, he was excited by what lay ahead of this son of Fernando Bale.
The win was Tornado Tears’ fifth in a row and 10th from 17 career starts, and the $175,000 winner’s purse took his career prize money beyond $235,000. At just 27 months of age, Tornado Tears and his litter brother look set to dominate the staying scene for some time to come.
JUNE 2018
It set up a spectacular finish to the world’s richest race for stayers. Quick Jagger railed under the tiring Benali to take the lead before being reeled in by Tornado Tears in the shadows of the post as Rippin’ Sam powered down the outside to just miss upstaging his litter brother. The three greyhounds were separated by little more than a length on the line and gave Robert Britton the trifecta. Britton’s fourth runner, Benali, finished 5th.
(41.17). But I always say with dogs you measure how good they are when you look back on their career, not forward. It was like that with Fanta Bale, I never raved about her until she got near the end when we could say she’s done it all. This bloke is the same.”

xciting young sprinter My Redeemer followed in the Group 1-winning footsteps of his superstar half-sister Up Hill Jill when storming to victory in the $100,000 to-the-winner Harrison-Dawson (515m) at Sandown Park on Sandown Cup night (24 May). My Redeemer and Up Hill Jill are both out of Lara-based trainer/ breeder David Geall’s wonderful producer Where’s Demonica, with Up Hill Jill having provided Geall and wife Rose with their first Group 1 celebrations in the 2017 Topgun and this year’s Golden Easter Egg. After finishing runner-up in the Sapphire Crown last year, Up Hill Jill was scratched from last Thursday’s Sapphire heats due to injury, however My Redeemer stepped into the void, winning his heat of the Harrison-Dawson in 29.37sec, ensuring the Gealls had a leading contender in Thursday’s Group 1 triple header. After drawing box one for the Harrison-Dawson, My Redeemer started $2.30 favourite and he settled third behind Bernardo ($8.10) and Zipping Captain ($40.80). My Redeemer was still third turning for home and with plenty of work to do, but he finished powerfully to grab Bernardo in the shadows of the post, scoring by half a length in 29.36sec.

Following two spectacular editions at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club, which came on the back of a period of reform, the VGAs will reopen the doors to a larger audience. This year’s VGAs will celebrate achievements of the 2017/18 racing season at Crown Palladium on the evening of Thursday, 18 October. This has been pushed back from its regular positioning in August to avoid a clash with the Nationals, which will be held in Melbourne at that time. Tickets to the Victorian Greyhound Awards will go on sale on 27 August.

“She’s got a lot of ability and to beat the likes of Miss Splendamiro and Dyna Patty was a great effort,” said a delighted Harry Manolitsis.
But the Pearcedale owner/trainer received one of his greatest thrills in greyhound racing when lightly-raced speedster Elevated was a brilliant all-the-way winner of the prestigious female Classic.
Elevated took her record to seven wins from 14 starts, having burst into the spotlight in April when she clocked a scintillating 29.12sec at Sandown Park at just her tenth start. She was bred by the Step By Step Syndicate, which comprises Manolitsis along with Bill and Serg Buccilli, while she is owned by Harry’s wife Adean.
arry Manolitsis was no stranger to Group 1 glory heading into the Sapphire Crown (515m) at Sandown Park on 24 May, having bred and raced 2016 Golden Easter Egg hero, Moreira.
Elevated was one of the most inexperienced finalists in the $100,000 to-the-winner Sapphire Crown, stepping up to Group 1 company for the first time at just her 14th start. After a slick 29.42sec heat victory, Elevated was a $5.60 chance from box five, with Dyna Patty the $2.60 favourite from box four.
“Young Rufus was voted the best Australasian pacer of his time. He won the Victoria Cup, the Auckland Cup and raced in the Interdominion. He also won over $1 million in prize money, which was enormous money way back in 2001,” Manolitsis recalled.

While Manolitsis can lay claim to involvement in two Group 1 winning greyhounds, the greatest racing animal he has been involved in was a horse called Young Rufus. Manolitsis was a part-owner in the seven-time Group 1 winning pacer from New Zealand.

The three-year-old greyhound, previously known by his racing name Flash Deeds, has settled into his new home at Carrum Downs in Melbourne’s south-east, with new owners Matt North and Elizabeth Heaver. Matt and Elizabeth were keen to add a dog to their household when they moved from the city to Carrum Downs. They researched different breeds, then rang the Baxter centre to find out more about greyhounds. As they both work full-time, they wanted a dog that could cope with being home alone during the day. The Baxter centre’s manager, Michelle Fisher, invited them to visit the kennel where they met Deeds and decided that he was the dog for them.
“More than 2,600 greyhounds were re-homed in Victoria last year. It has been a tremendous team effort involving staff, many volunteers who are so generous with their time, racing participants and the efforts of several other re-homing programs that operate in Victoria. “Participants have played a crucial part by either rehoming their own dogs or taking the time to prepare their dogs for entry into GAP. The industry has embraced re-homing and my aim is to get to a point where every greyhound that is suitable for re-homing finds a home.” Now in its 22nd year, GAP has re-homed about 7500 greyhounds. Michelle began her association with GAP as a volunteer about five years ago and has fostered more than 40 greyhounds to help prepare them for their new life as a pet. “Although I work alone at Baxter, it is a huge team effort to get the dogs ready and down to Baxter to be adopted. Baxter could not have been such a success without the staff at Seymour and at our assessment centre at Ballarat,” Michelle said. “Working with greyhounds is a dream. I see so many smiles and happy people – what’s not to love about it?” Visit GAP’s website to find out more about preparing greyhounds for GAP’s pre-entry assessment: gap.grv.org.au/about-gap/intake-model

As announced on Sky Racing’s The Catching Pen on 29 May, there will be three new events added to the program and prize money increased for seven more – including taking the prize money for the TAB Melbourne Cup to a record $630,000. Sandown Greyhound Racing Club Chairman Neil Brown said the club was excited to enhance the biggest night of racing in the sport. “The TAB Melbourne Cup is greyhound racing’s flagship event – it’s the race that owners and trainers around the country want to win,” he said. “The changes we’ve announced tonight not only consolidates the Cup’s standing as the world’s richest greyhound race, but makes TAB Melbourne Cup night a genuine showcase of our sport.”

arrnambool greyhound racing is set to receive a major boost thanks to a $1.4 million joint funding package supported by the Victorian Government.
The Government is providing $685,000 through the Victorian Racing Industry Fund to support significant infrastructure upgrades to Wannon Park that will see new air conditioning and public toilets installed in the Wannon Park function centre, along with new carpets, floor tiles and paintwork. The installation of LED lights will also save the club an estimated $2,500 annually and a new roof will replace dilapidated shade sails over the outdoor area. A replacement judge’s tower and kennel block floor drainage will improve conditions for officials and greyhounds, along with a new irrigation system, improved lure rail, and a tractor turn pad on the back straight to reduce wear and tear to the racecourse. the announcement at the Warrnambool Cup on 2 May, said: “The Andrews Labor Government is proud to support these significant upgrades at Wannon Park because it’s a major racing facility and an important venue for the Warrnambool community.” The racing industry in the Western District generates more than $100 million for the Victorian economy annually and helps sustain more than 980 full-time equivalent jobs in the region. Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney, added that “greyhound racing plays a crucial role in supporting local jobs and boosting the economy, and this funding will help the club to attract new visitors and participants to the region.” With works well underway, the club is now in recess until midAugust, while trialling could potentially resume as soon as midJuly. S
uperstar Striker Light made amends for a narrow defeat in the 2017 Warrnambool Cup Final when running down Zoom Out to claim a thrilling victory in the 2018 Group 2 showpiece on 2 May. Twelve months earlier, the Brett Bravo-trained Striker Light started favourite in the Warrnambool Cup when beaten threequarters of a length by outsider Leo’s Gift. Striving to go one better, Striker Light came to Warrnambool for her second tilt at the $47,000 to-the-winner Cup only four nights after running fourth in the Group 1 Perth Cup. In a wonderful performance from Striker Light and Brett and Kelly Bravo, Striker Light backed up from the gruelling crosscontinent expedition to win her Warrnambool Cup heat in 24.92sec, the second fastest qualifying performance behind Jimmy Newob’s 24.87sec.
Striker Light came out running from her middle draw but was crossed by Zoom Out, which led into the home straight; however Striker Light’s class and will-to-win prevailed as she finished strongly to defeat Zoom Out by .37 of a length in 24.90sec, with Jimmy Newob finishing third.
“To come back from the Perth Cup, back up and perform in her Warrnambool Cup heat a couple of days after landing and then go on to be the Warrnambool Cup champion after finishing second last year is a credit to Kelly and Brett; they are unbelievable trainers and do an amazing job with her,” partowner George Farrugia said. “It was a huge effort to run down Burn Like Fire in her heat, and to do the same with Zoom Out just proves how much of a superstar she is.” It was Striker Light’s first country cup victory and fourth Group success of her wonderful career, having won three Group 1 trophies; the Golden Easter Egg, Temlee and National Futurity. Striker Light’s memorable triumph completed a treble for the Bravo kennel, with Cadalora taking out the $5,000 to-thewinner Hire Australia 650m special event and Zipping Jess prevailing in a maiden. Anthony Azzopardi’s odds-on favourite Raw Ability, third in the 2017 Warrnambool Cup, took out the Stan Lake Memorial (450m) and accompanying $5,900 winner’s cheque.

However, that being the case there needs to be a lot of work done on education of your obligations in relation to the Code and the development of templates to help simplify the whole process. The GOTBA intend to work with GRV, particularly in the development of the health management plans and individual greyhound record keeping systems. This initially might seem to be a complex process, however I am confident we can develop sectional plans so that breeding, rearing, training and rehoming criteria are separated for clarity and reference.

GRV’s Welfare Department recently commissioned the Melbourne University to conduct a research project on the socialisation of greyhounds with regards to optimising their racing success and maximising successful re-homing. Meetings were held at Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Cranbourne and the GOTBA had a representative at each of these meetings. After collectively discussing information requested at these meetings, our recommendation was that the best way to research this topic would be to meet with greyhound breeders who are most successful at producing racing greyhounds that go on to be suitable for rehoming. This, and only this, should be the benchmark for any future policy, and it must be emphasised that most of our dogs are already suitable for re-homing. Any recommended behavioural training programme must come from people who are experienced in the care of greyhounds and who are already achieving the required results. These programs should not be influenced by outsiders who, however well-meaning, do not have the expertise to comment on this matter. Another aspect of concern for the GOTBA has been the minimal support for private greyhound adoption organisations. These people are dedicated to re-homing our racing dogs and need our support, so we have requested that GRV liaises with them regularly and offers more financial support to ensure their ongoing commitment to our sport.
In relation to re-homing racing greyhounds upon retirement, there is a hold up in the system relating to dogs needing to be let down and introduced to living in a home as a pet. Many greyhounds experience this either through the Greyhound Adoption Program or through private agencies, where they go into foster homes in preparation for adoption. However, these spaces are limited. As all owners are now responsible for this process and many do not have the facilities or expertise with greyhounds to do this, they need to have people offering this service for a fee, which they are happy to pay for. This is a great opportunity for anyone who loves greyhounds and would like to run a business preparing these dogs for adoption. Many owners would willingly pay for this service and trainers would then not have their kennel space taken up with dogs waiting for rehoming. Our representatives on GRV’s Racing Reference Group are helping to improve racing conditions by being involved in arranging studies of track surfaces and their preparations, along with lure designs that best encourage dogs to chase keenly. Only this month we have also been able to convince GRV management to put more cushioning under the grass matting in front of the starting boxes. We are hoping this will reduce physical stress on greyhounds and, in turn, minimise injuries incurred at this point on the track. There has been much discussion over the best way to deal with people who are disqualified or suspended from racing greyhounds. For instance, what is fair and reasonable when you have a partner who also trains? Should you be allowed to transfer greyhounds? Should you have to leave the property? Should you be allowed to care for your dogs while serving your suspension or disqualification? This is a difficult situation and although we accept that there needs to be an enforcement of penalties, our position is that these are racing offences and should be just that, as long as it is not a welfare issue you should not have to send your dogs away to be cared for at great expense. A disqualification or suspension from training, racing and attendance at racing venues is a significant penalty and should not include having to leave your family and home. This situation needs careful consideration and options should be offered depending on circumstances. We look forward to supporting greyhound racing into a successful future, however for us to achieve this we require your support, so please join the GOTBA so that our organisation can continue to be a strong representative of our participants. The socialisation of greyhounds for-rehoming is a topic of great discussion at present.

The Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of member and their greyhounds. GOTBA Committee: Sandra Reed (President), Robert Britton & Lynton Hogan (Co-Vice Presidents), Gayle Osbourne (Secretary), John Reid, John Cheeseman, Karen Leek, Geoff Miles & Brian Selleck (General Committee).
In his time at the club John has presided over the move of the club’s premier event, the Sale Cup, to Boxing Day which now draws crowds of up to 3000 people, and an increase in the number of the club’s gaming machines which helped boost the club’s financial position. He has been a member of the Sale GRC since the late 1990s and was elected Vice President in 1995 before stepping up to the President’s position three years later.
Twenty year milestone tops off a life time of community service By Suzanne McKenzie
J
ohn Waugh accepted the position of President at the Sale Greyhound Racing Club 20 years ago.
It is his enthusiasm for the sport and his respect for the people at the club that keeps him there. Waugh has almost 35 years of experience as an owner, trainer and breeder and committee member, and while he is the first to admit that none of his greyhounds were champions many did turn in winning performances at Gippsland tracks. Along the way Waugh has accrued Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Ken Carr medal, which is considered to be the highest award for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry, and a life membership from the Sale GRC in 2009.

The stability of the club’s committee is a big advantage, which was not the case 20 years ago when there was a frequent turnover in committee members. Racing Manager, Des Dooley, says this stability is one of John’s key achievements at the club.
“He has done an excellent job and is passionate about the Sale club,” Dooley said. “He leads when required and lets people do their job.” Married to Eileen, Waugh has three sons, Michael, Daniel and Christopher. Involvement with the greyhounds has been a family affair over the years and Daniel is also on the club’s committee. In his younger days Waugh combined greyhound racing with his day job running a dairy farm in Maffra, which was challenging at times. However, he has always had time to give to the community, including volunteering with the SES and his long involvement with several sports clubs, and he avidly encourages the club’s generous support of local community groups, sports clubs, health care services and charities.

The $33,000 Ladies Bracelet saw pre-race favourite Up Hill Jill finish second to NSW superstar Miss Splendamiro. Although pleased with his greyhound’s efforts, trainer David Geall knew something wasn’t right with Up Hill Jill following the event. “She didn’t show any soreness at all, but I decided to get an x-ray because of a little bit of fluid I found in the area. The x-ray showed a small hairline crack in her metatarsal,” Geall said of Up Hill Jill, who has won 37 races from 72 starts and earned

$841,186 in prize money. The injury subsequently saw Up Hill Jill scratched from the Group 1 Sapphire Crown heats as a precautionary measure and will likely see her sidelined for several more weeks. The Robert Britton-trained Slingshot Gypsy headed back to Western Australia for another chance at group glory after finishing seventh to kennelmate Benali in the recent Perth Cup Consolation (520m). Slingshot Gypsy was quick to begin from box five in the Oaks on 26 May but was run down by local Cropduster. Slingshot Gypsy now has more than $69,000 in prize money to her name from 19 starts (six wins).

T
he 2018 Group 2 Shepparton Cup final held over 450m has been moved to August 18. The Cup, which was originally scheduled to be run on August 4, has been pushed back two weeks. Heats for the final will now be conducted on Monday, August 13 with nominations closing on Friday, August 10 at 9am. The Shepparton Cup will now be held between the National State final and National Sprint and Distance Championships, which will this year be held in Melbourne, at Sandown Greyhound Racing Club.

nterstate group racing unfortunately didn’t fall in Victoria’s favour throughout May, but Up Hill Jill and Slingshot Gypsy certainly didn’t disgrace themselves with second placings in the Group 3 Ladies Bracelet (520m) in Wentworth Park and the Group Two WA Oaks (520m) at Cannington.

GRV’s Acting GM Racing, Scott Robins said the move would ensure a high calibre of greyhounds would take part in Shepparton’s premier race of the year.

“This move will better manage the flow of greyhounds competing at group level,” Robins said. “The Shepparton Cup has a rich history of attracting the best greyhounds from around the state and this shift in dates will help ensure that tradition continues.”

Owner sets the bar in true tale of courage By Andrew Copley
A
fairytale comeback added to a magnificent night of racing at last month’s RSN Sandown Cup night when Shima Bar won his first city race since returning from a major injury setback.
after almost 14 months on the sidelines. Upon return, he ran third and first at Geelong before his sensational come-frombehind win on Sandown Cup night in 29.90sec. And Gleeson hasn’t given up hope of a return to the group racing circuit.
Shima Bar’s victory in the RSN Breakfast Club Grade 5 Stake (515m) carried as much emotion as perhaps any race conducted on Victorian soil this year.
“Sandown Cup night was the first time he had been around Sandown since November 4, 2016, which makes his performance even more special. He’s got no flexion in his left wrist compared to his right wrist, but he trialled around Ballarat the week before he went to Sandown, just after they’d ploughed the track, and the time he ran was quite incredible. He quite easily could (compete at group level again) because he’s got attitude. He wants to go,” Gleeson said.
Bred in the Gippsland town of Koo Wee Rup by Bob Cummings and owned by the Cummings Gleeson Syndicate, Shima Bar had the world at his feet in the early part of 2017 when injury struck. He won 10 of his first 16 starts for trainer Andrea Dailly, including the Group 1 Paws Of Thunder in Sydney, before breaking his front left leg.
Gleeson, who describes Shima Bar as ‘so courageous’, played a huge role in the greyhound’s return to racing by bringing him into his home to live during his recovery.
“I was swimming him at a heated pool at a vet in Narre Warren, which included putting floatation devices on him so he wouldn’t sink. The swimming helped him realise that he still had a leg there, because when the nerves are cut the message to the brain tells them that the leg doesn’t exist. I was also doing physiotherapy with him three times a day, including stretching, as well as walking him at our local golf course,” Gleeson said. Shima Bar is now three starts into his return to the racetrack
The biggest take-out from Shima Bar’s injury might just be Gleeson’s efforts in bringing the greyhound into his home during his time of need. It demonstrates an example to greyhound owners that patience, persistence and a willingness to be hands-on can reap enormous rewards. Note: A week after his Sandown Cup night triumph, Shima Bar tailed off in a race and it was reported that he had sustained left wrist soreness, right deltoid soreness and a right trapezius injury, leading to a 14 day stand-down period being imposed by the on-track veterinarian.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
“We got him back (racing) under the careful care of Des Fegan, a (greyhound) vet from Cranbourne. Des was confident we could get him back to the track. Following an x-ray, Des operated on him the morning after his injury, and once he had the screws and the plate removed, we were having him x-rayed every two weeks to see how the bones were knitting together.”
Gleeson, a Director at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club, said he felt indebted to the Dailly team and Dr Fegan for their role in Shima Bar’s return, while Cummings and Gleeson should also be commended for financing the recovery.
JUNE 2018
“It was a clean break…the bone snapped in half,” part-owner David Gleeson recalled. “As a result, it took him five months before he could even put his foot to the ground. I had doubts about whether he’d ever make it back to the track, but regardless, his health and welfare were always the number one priority.”
Shima Bar, a son of Barcia Bale and Shimaguni, was registered as a sire during his recovery, and he now has eight litters on the ground.

The reasons for cheering the five runner home this month at Bendigo do not stop there as Scott Manning from Manning’s Greyhound Complex has confirmed that, as was the case in 2017, his business will match the donation of the BGRA, meaning $110 will go to GM54K for each number five to salute at Bendigo in June. Cheer The 5 For Kids month commences on Friday night, 1 June, with a once again sold-out Girls’ Night Out event to take place during and after the race meeting. Proceeds from auctions, raffles and a percentage of ticket sales for Girls’ Night Out also goes to the charity, with the night usually kick starting the campaign with around $4,000.
Cheer the 5 For Kids in June By Troy Harley
F
or the seventh year, the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Association (BGRA) is excited that June is finally here for the ‘Cheer The 5 For Kids’ month – raising funds for the Give Me 5 For Kids charity. As has been the case in the past six years, a special racing vest is worn by the number five runners in each race at Bendigo throughout the month of June that carries the GM54K logo, and the BGRA will donate $55 to the Charity for each number five runner that is victorious at Lord’s Raceway for the month of June.
Give Me 5 For Kids is Southern Cross Austereo’s national fundraiser, which supports local children’s hospital wards across regional Australia. Each June SCA’s local radio and television networks get behind the cause and, with SCA being the BGRA’s media partner, the Club is pleased to get more involved each year for such a great cause. In 2017 the BGRA’s events raised almost $8,000 for GM54K, and it is hoping to break the $10,000 barrier in 2018. On top of Girls’ Night Out and Cheer The 5 For Kids month, the BGRA is planning a bumper “Superheroes” kids day on Sunday, 1 July, which feature heats of the Triple M Bendigo Cup. This will be the final fundraiser for GM54K for 2018. ‘Cheer The 5 For Kids’ race meetings are scheduled for June 1, 6, 8, 9, 14, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29.

Rodney Thorneycroft remembered at Healesville By Suzanne McKenzie
I
t was no surprise when Nervous An Weird ($2.20 favourite) finished first in the Rodney Thorneycroft Memorial at Healesville on 6 May.
It was win number seven from seven starts for Ashlee Terry’s two-year-old chaser. He led all the way, finishing in 18.91sec, after also winning the $14,300 Bendigo Gold Rush Maiden Series a few weeks earlier. The Thorneycroft family turned up in force to honour the memory of Rodney Thorneycroft. Rodney was a founding member of the Healesville club, along with his brother Gary and parents, Margaret and Ron. They are all life members and former committee members. At various times Rodney was treasurer, secretary, lure driver and he held many other positions around the club, depending on what needed to be done.
Gary said it meant a lot to the family that the club continued to honour Rodney’s name.
The Healesville Greyhound Association’s manager, Cynthia O’Brien, paid tribute to Rodney and the entire family. “They really are one of the families that are part of the fabric of the Healesville history,” Cynthia said. It is no exaggeration to say that the family helped build the club from the ground up. They spent many days on working bees and ran bingo nights and other fundraisers. Margaret ran a make-shift canteen from a caravan in the early days. “There was nothing but a grass paddock,” Gary recalls. Gary is still very involved with racing and the club. He spent 32 years on the club’s committee, including time as president, and currently races four dogs. In January this year, he had his first city win with Shy Freddie at Sandown. Margaret and Ron are regulars at the club and Ebony and Madison help Gary with his dogs. Gary said greyhound racing “brings the whole family together, which is what we have always tried to do”.

DON'T WAIT APPLY FOR DNA TODAY!
DID YOU KNOW GRV’s new VicGreys program is generating up to $1.4m in bonuses to Victorian breeders and owners across 1,900 Victorian races each year. Full details at: grv.org.au/vicgreys
GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.
For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.
JUNE 2018
GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early. For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows:

Jesaulenko will spend his days on the couch at the home of owner Terri Morris. Photo by: Clint Anderson.
Jesaulenko’s retirement. “I’ve had so many people tell me how much they have loved following his career including Kelly Bravo, Peter Riley and the Daillys, just to name a few, and people are often commenting on how good he looks,” she said. Jesaulenko’s 100th and final start was also the 50th time he has been swabbed, with Terri pleading with Stewards to take a sample on Sunday so he could reach the milestone, adding that he “has never returned a positive”.
You beauty, Jezza
A son of College Causeway and Elite Fairy, Jesaulenko will turn five in October. His retirement will allow Morris to focus her energy on a couple of Jesaulenko’s full younger brothers, whom she also bred.
By Andrew Copley
P
opular greyhound Jesaulenko couldn’t quite win his 100th and final start at Sale on 13 May, but he went out on a high note regardless.
“It was a huge run,” breeder trainer Terri Morris said. “In fact, it was probably one of the biggest runs of his career. He got squeezed up and was shuffled back in the field before soaring home and running 2nd.” Jesaulenko, named after AFL great Alex Jesaulenko, finished his career with 45 wins and more than $410,000 in prize money.
“I’ve got two of his brothers at home who aren’t named yet, but they are 20 months old and showing above-average potential. I’ll be able to put more time into getting them ready to race now, and I expect them to hit the racetrack in a couple of months,” she said. As for Jesaulenko, he is destined for life on the couch in Terri’s loungeroom. “He is living a life of luxury in retirement at my place,” she said. “I’m also more than happy to continue involving him in any promotional activities because he has been great for the sport and he loves all the attention,” she said
Morris said her star’s greatest highlight was winning the 2017 Traralgon Cup at her local track. He was also the first greyhound to win on the new Traralgon track when it re-opened for racing following a major redevelopment in 2015.
Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news
Away from the track, Jesaulenko has been involved in a number of promotions including a full-page spread in the Herald Sun newspaper and meeting almost the entire Collingwood footall team at an event at the Traralgon GRC. However, perhaps Terri’s most memorable moment was when she took Jesaulenko into hospital to visit one of his biggest fans, former Warragul GRC President, Matt Height, after he endured a serious stroke. Terri has also been overwhelmed by the number of wellwishers from a number of high profile participants upon news of

From the grassroots of coursing to the world’s richest staying race By Molly Haines
A
nyone who thinks coursing is for battling greyhounds need look no further than group-class stayer, Zipping Nitro.
A finalist in the world’s richest greyhound race for stayers, the RSN Sandown Cup on 24 May, Zipping Nitro is one of a number of greyhounds trained by Ian Garland who course as part of their training regime. “I wanted to both mentally and physically strengthen Zipping Nitro for the Sandown Cup and coursing enabled me to do both,” said Garland, from Longlea (near Bendigo). “I really wanted to break up his routine because he is a greyhound who predominantly races on the circle tracks. I think it’s healthy to change a greyhound’s routine up, which is why I try and incorporate coursing into my training.” Coursing is held on weekends during the colder months of the year on straight tracks around Victoria - presently Benalla, Lang Lang and Longwood. It involves greyhounds racing one-on-one in a knock out competition style, in which they can course up
three times throughout a day. Garland coursed Zipping Nitro at Benalla on 29 April, where he won all three of his courses that day, defeating Crackerjack Mick in the final and picking up a first prize of $825. He believes that with the right preparation and a strong emphasis on recovery, coursing can be a huge benefit to just about any greyhound. “I don’t like to categorise greyhounds who course because it is a great training tool – I have been utilising coursing for 20 years,” Garland said. After finishing sixth to the all-conquering Tornado Tears in the Sandown Cup final, Zipping Nitro’s record stands at six wins from 24 starts. The son of My Bro Fabio and Scarlett Girl has missed a place just twice during his career. Check out our video series on coursing tips at greyhoundcare. grv.org.au/video

Coursing has family full of hope
T
he Fullerton family from Red Cliffs (near Mildura) are part of a new wave of coursers, with nominations up substantially in 2018.
“We have started coursing again as a family and we love it. Mum and dad used to course greyhounds many years ago, but I was too young to remember. It has a fantastic social atmosphere,” said Melissa Fullerton. “Living in Mildura, it means a lot of travelling, but when you train greyhounds you have to do what’s best for your dogs. My brother Shawn, mum (Jenny) and I go coursing while dad (Barry) stays home to hold the fort.” Importantly, the greyhounds the Fullertons are currently coursing – four 28-month-old pups by Kiowa Producer out of Billie The Bar – are benefitting from the experience, particularly with regards to their desire to chase. The quartet comprises of Believe In You (two starts for no placings on the circle) as well as unraced trio American Brat, Black Lazarus and Steorra. Melissa said she has noticed a remarkable improvement in the chasing habits and confidence levels of all four greyhounds. American Brat has adapted particularly well, making a semi-final at Benalla last month before winning a maiden event at Lang Lang on 6 May. Black Lazarus has also been notably impressive, making the semifinals of his first two coursing attempts before winning a maiden event at Benalla on 20 May. “The litter had been struggling so we decided to course them to try to get their confidence up, and it seems to have worked because they’re chasing like demons. It’s good experience for them, especially if they can get in front of the other dog,” Melissa said.

“Hopefully they continue to improve. Time will tell whether their improvement correlates into more competitive efforts on circle tracks, but we’re quietly confident it will.”

Hard copies of the Code of Practice at Victorian greyhound racing clubs
T
he Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) has advised that it has printed 2000 bound copies of the Code of Pracice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds. 150 copies were sent to each of GRV’s 13 clubs, and 50 copies to GRV’s head office in Chetwynd Street West Melbourne, for distribution to participants and stakeholders. Contact information for Victorian greyhound clubs can be found on Page 34 of this publication. To view the new Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds visit: agriculture.vic.gov.au/pets/dogs/ greyhounds/code-of-practice
The Don Jarvis-trained Kid Ringo has won four from 38 on the TAB circuit, but he has worn the wrath of Stewards for ‘Failing to Chase’ on two occasions. He is, however, unbeaten in coursing having also won the 2018 Repco Richmond Maiden at Benalla on 29 April.
RACING REFERENCE GROUP UPDATE By Molly Haines
G
RV has taken the first step in trialling suggested lures which were designed by participants in the Racing Reference Group (RRG) in April’s meeting.
390m, Warragul 400m, Geelong 400m, Shepparton 390m and Bendigo 425m. GRV are in the planning stages which will include consulting with Clubs who will assist in the decision about the suitability at each track before proceeding. GRV is also investigating other options to cranes to make the Drop on Boxes easier to use for staff.
The suggested lure designs, which move back to a straight arm concept, range between 1.2 and 1.5 metres in length and sit about 0.5 metres off the track. The suggested designs also include multiple decoys on the arm to provide more options for greyhounds to chase.
“The implementation of the Drop on Boxes was formed from the University Technology Sydney (UTS) study, which found that Drop on Boxes encouraged a cleaner and straighter run out of the boxes,” Robins said.
The trial took place at Sandown without greyhounds behind the lure.
The RRG are scheduled to meet on Wednesday 27 June, with a discussion about Catching Pens on the agenda.
“The arms were made up of a new product suggested to us by the group called Moly Chrome. We needed to ensure it was sustainable on existing GRV infrastructure before trialling it with greyhounds,” Acting General Manager Racing Scott Robins said. “We are now waiting on a performance report by Stewards, Vets, OH&S personnel and GRV Racing staff who witnessed the trial before we make a decision about the future of these suggested designs.” “It is important to note that before any new lure designs are used on race day an extensive trial with racing greyhounds will be undertaken – this is not an overnight process; Animal Welfare is at the forefront of our work.” Robins presented a discussion paper for feedback on Mandatory Performance Trials whereby greyhounds would be required to trial prior to starting their racing careers to prove they are capable of racing. Mandatory Performance Trials are currently compulsory in NSW and Western Australia. It was discussed that Drop on Boxes could be installed at the following Clubs; Warrnambool 390m, Ballarat

Former great visits the GAP Café By Andrew Copley
“We had been wanting to go to the GAP Café for a while now,” said Miss Mini Mouse’s owner Diane Bartolo. “It’s a great concept and I must say we were more than impressed. I’m sure we’ll go again at some stage. We thought we’d take Witch (Miss Mini Mouse) with us for an outing.” Miss Mini Mouse (Brett Lee – Leprechaun Yap) will turn 14 in November. A lightning fast beginner, she won 17 races from 48 starts. She contested two Melbourne Cup finals and an Adelaide Cup, while her greatest win was in the Group 2 South Australian Oaks.

*NEW GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). Welfare Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare
Kennel cough prevention The state-wide Kennel Cough outbreak in 2017 highlighted how a more serious outbreak would threaten the racing program by depleting the availability of racing dogs. Kennel Cough could prevent a greyhound from racing for several weeks, and as affected dogs can also be infectious for weeks after they recover from symptoms, outbreaks have the potential to keep ‘smouldering’ for long periods of time.
vaccinations ‘current’, and this includes an annual Kennel Cough vaccination. In other words, GRV’s vaccination recommendation discussed above will be mandatory under the Code. As such, GRV encourages participants to get into the practice now of vaccinating their greyhounds beyond the naming vaccination, particularly for Kennel Cough every year.
As we are approaching the colder winter months, now is the time to start vaccinating your greyhounds against Kennel Cough. Vaccination, while not always 100% effective, is your best protection, by significantly reducing the chances of an outbreak, and reducing the severity of symptoms of affected dogs.

The Kennel Cough vaccine makes up two parts of what is termed the “C5 vaccination”. The other three components (termed a C3) are Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis. Vaccination against Kennel Cough can be given at the same time as a C3 or as a separate vaccine, and can be given by intra-nasal, oral or injectable routes. While Kennel Cough vaccination is mandatory for the 2nd puppy vaccination and the naming vaccination, it is advisable to give Kennel Cough boosters every 6-12 months for life to ensure ongoing immunity. In comparison, C3 vaccinations can be boosted just every 1-3 years in adult dogs (i.e. after the naming vaccination). GRV therefore recommends for racing greyhounds (in addition to the mandatory puppy and naming vaccinations): • C3 vaccination every 1-3 years; and • Kennel Cough vaccination (ideally intra-nasal or oral) every 6-12 months, preferably at this time of the year. However, if you want to book your greyhound into GAP you will need to check the new GAP vaccination requirements (introduced on 1 March 2018 to better protect against Kennel Cough). Please see the notes on the GAP page in this edition or contact GRV or your veterinarian if would like more information.
To assist participants in compliance with LR 42.6, new template certificates are now available for use if seeking a medical or behavioural exemption from the re-homing requirements of the rule. The new forms are: - GRV Re-homing Unsuitability Certificate that must be submitted with a Notice of Intention to Euthanase (NoI) if seeking an exemption from re-homing efforts on behavioural grounds. - GRV Euthanasia Certificate this must be submitted if your greyhound is euthanased and contains the certification required from a veterinarian if seeking an exemption from NoI and re-homing requirements on medical grounds. The new template certificates and further information about LR42.6 can be found at www.greyhoundcare.grv. org.au/new-local-rule-42-6/. All veterinarians on our mailing database have been emailed the certificates (along with explanatory information). If you or your veterinarian have any questions about the new template certificates, or the process in general, please contact GRV.
The new greyhound Code of Practice, commencing on 1 January 2020, will make it mandatory to keep your greyhounds’

Revised penalty guidelines for welfare offences available online GRV has published its revised Penalty Guidelines for Greyhound Welfare 2018. The guidelines were released in draft form for public comment last December. The submissions GRV received during the public consultation process varied from being largely in favour of the new penalty ranges, to those that considered the new ranges too high. GRV considered the feedback, gave key stakeholders a further opportunity to discuss their concerns and, as a result, made changes to the category 1 and 2 penalties.
It is important to note that the penalties outlined in the document are a guide. Welfare offences will continue to be treated on an individual basis and aggravating and mitigating factors, such as prior offences, remorse, cooperation and action already taken to address problems, will still be considered. The guidelines can be found at: https://greyhoundcare.grv. org.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Penalty-GuidelinesGreyhound-Welfare-2018.pdf
Timing is critical with regard to Veterinary Clearance Certificates
Important reminder regarding the handling of greyhounds
Trainers who wish to nominate a greyhound to race that has been stood down pending receipt of a veterinary certificate of clearance, should ensure the veterinary certificate is forwarded to GRV at least one business day before nominations close.
Unregistered persons are not permitted to handle greyhounds on any racecourse. Trainers are reminded of their obligations under GAR101 (2) (a) & (b).
This will allow sufficient time for processing. If a veterinary clearance is not received by GRV in a timely manner, processing will not be guaranteed, and the nomination may not be accepted.
An owner or trainer shall not permit an unlicensed person to - (a) train, at any place; or (b) handle on any racecourse a greyhound owned by or pursuant to the control of the owner or trainer.
