Editor: Andrew Copley Assistant Editor: Molly Haines Greyhound Monthly Victoria (GMV) magazine is produced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), the governing body of greyhound racing in this state. GRV strongly encourages all Victorian greyhound racing participants - in particular breeders and trainers - to take the time to read each issue of GMV to ensure they are across relevant key issues. Each edition of GMV aims to provide an overview of key happenings in relation to Victorian greyhound racing that occurred during the previous month, as well as promoting significant and relevant upcoming activities and events. If you receive Greyhound Monthly Victoria via post but only read it on-line, GRV asks that you please consider the environment and notify us via email (tmaagma@grv.org.au) requesting to be removed from our mailing list. You can also request to have GMV emailed to you via the same email address. It is GRV’s goal to have each edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria available on-line at grv.org.au on or before the last day of the previous month, and arriving in letter boxes by the 10th day of each month.
CEO’s Update With meetings held 363 days a year, there’s always something happening in Victorian greyhound racing but this last month was particularly busy. On 18 August, we saw a commanding win by Peter Galo in the Shepparton Cup, followed the next day by Bear Left taking out the 145th Waterloo Cup, which was again livestreamed on GRV’s Facebook page. Then in the run up to the National Championships at Sandown, GRV’s Greyhound Racing Integrity Unity hosted Australia’s first major Integrity in Sports conference which brought together national and international speakers and panels to share their experience and expertise across a range of issues from doping to wagering to meeting community expectations. The Crocmedia National Championships saw Rob Britton claim a second successive win in the distance event with a great run by Tornado Tears while Chris Halse had a very convincing win with the Western Australian dog, West On Augie in the sprint championship. The Nationals also provided an opportunity for GRV to officially launch the new brand for Victorian greyhound racing, along with a new slogan “Love the dogs. Love the thrills”. This new identity captures the energy and excitement of these great dogs in full flight while allowing each Club and major race meetings to reflect their own individual identities within the overall brand. And it makes it clear we are proudly Victorian. This branding is now being rolled out in club signage across the State and for all new marketing and promotional activities.
I’d also like to note that Sandown Greyhound Racing Club (SGRC) has entered into an agreement to provide Administrator Services to the Healesville Greyhound Association for a two-year period from 1 August 2018 and you can read more about this development in this issue. Speaking of Healesville, we have the Healesville Cup coming up on 9 September which is Australia’s leading straight track meeting, followed by the TopCat Video Cup at the Meadows on 29 September. And looking ahead to the rest of the year, the action will continue with the Victorian Greyhound Awards, the Melbourne Cup, the Topgun, more country Cups, The TAB Great Chase and the Gippsland Carnival, all more great opportunities to love the dogs and love the thrills.

I am also pleased to announce that Olivia Alcock has been engaged by GRV as Re-homing Facilitator for the Gippsland Region. Olivia is a registered participant and respected greyhound breeder with considerable experience in club and race day administration. Based at the Traralgon club, she will work with participants in the Gippsland region to explore and prepare for various re-homing options for their retiring greyhounds, including through GAP, other re-homing agencies or directly with potential owners. In other staff movements, Heidi Lester, GRV’s Head Steward is leaving Australia to take up a new position as Head Steward for the Korean Racing Authority. During her time at GRV, Heidi played a key role in many reform initiatives, including introducing a more professional career path for stewards, and I wish her well in what will be an exciting and challenging new role. Paul Searle is currently acting as GRV’s Head Steward until the position is permanently filled.
SEPTEMBER 2018
In other news during the month, GRV welcomed Vaughn Lynch as its new General Manager, Racing. This is the first time in many years that GRV has had someone solely dedicated to leading racing operations without doubling up on other responsibilities. Vaughn has over 20 years’ experience in a range of senior roles across all three racing codes, has trained horses himself and grew up in a greyhound racing family. He will be a very valuable addition to the GRV team and will be working closely with the clubs on the ground. Having done a great job as acting Racing Manager for GRV, Scott Robins has now started work as GRV’s Director, Safe Racing and
Sustainable Breeding. He will report directly to Vaughn and meet regularly with me as he develops and drives key initiatives to deliver safer racing and an improved approach to greyhound breeding sustainability.

Tornado Tears proved too strong for Rippin’ Sam in the home straight.
Distance dominance continues for Big V By Mick Floyd
S
taying superstar Tornado Tears was crowned the Crocmedia National Distance champion at Sandown Park on 24 August.
Victorian trainer Robert Britton claimed his second consecutive National Distance Championship when Tornado Tears scored a thrilling victory over kennelmate Rippin’ Sam by two lengths. A heavily supported $1.50 favourite, the greyhound affectionately known as ‘Batman’ was forced to work hard to win his third Group 1 title. He was beaten to the first turn by Dyna Chancer and put under pressure early by Rippin’ Sam, who defied his usual racing pattern to settle much further forward that usual. The three Victorians cleared out from the pack and were separated by just one length approaching the home turn.
Later in the night, Western Australia claimed its first National Sprint Championship since 1997 on when West On Augie ($4.90) led all the way from box four to defeat a star studded line up. Trained by Chris Halse, West On Augie overcame the persistent Hasten Slowly to win in 29.43sec and claim the $75,000 first prize. As they turned for home, Tornado Tears showed the strength and determination that has made him such a popular chaser, gaining the ascendancy to land the $75,000 winner’s cheque in the slick time of 41.45sec. Britton, who won the National Distance Championship in 2017 with Fanta Bale in Brisbane, was both delighted and relieved with the victory. “It’s really good, but it’s also a relief, because when you’re favourite for an event and they bring you up at a $1.50 there’s a bit of pressure on. But the dog doesn’t know that I guess, and he did the job,” Britton said. “You need a bit of luck in all greyhound racing, but that dog, he just seems to be able to pull it out at the right time.” It was Tonando Tears’ sixth victory from as many starts over Sandown’s 715m trip over which he has four of the 10 fastest times ever recorded. He has now amassed $462,720 in prize money from just 26 starts. This was the 50th National Distance Championship and the 27th time a Victorian has claimed the title.
Hinkley hype surrounds Cairnlea Kenny

W
hile Nationals night belonged to Victoria and Western Australia, much of the hype leading into Nationals week revolved around SA sprinter, Cairnlea Kenny.
Closely connected to Port Adelaide Coach, Ken Hinkley, the National Sprint Championship was run during half-time of the Power’s Round 23 loss to Essendon at Adelaide Oval. News that Hinkley was connected to Cairnlea Kenny made news all over Australia, including extensive media coverage on SEN, RSN, the Herald Sun and the AFL Footy Record. Cairnlea Kenny was bred by the late Peter Hubbard, who died suddenly from a heart attack in late 2016. Hubbard and Hinkley were best mates, with the greyhound owned by Hubbard’s wife, Jan.

W
hile Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley was focusing on his team getting across the line against Essendon at Adelaide Oval on Friday night, he was also hoping for another win of a much different kind. A greyhound Hinkley is closely connected to – Cairnlea Kenny – raced for a first prize of $75,000 at Melbourne’s Sandown Park in the Crocmedia National Sprint Championship (515m) during the half-time break of the Power-Bombers game. Every state in Australia had at least one representative in what was greyhound racing’s only annual state-versus-state sprint race, and Cairnlea Kenny was the sole South Australian contender. Hinkley has been racing greyhounds for many years, chiefly with his best mate, the late Peter Hubbard, a greyhound trainer from Victoria’s Western District who passed away after a sudden heart attack 18 months ago aged 56. Hubbard was involved in greyhound racing for 30 years. He was also involved with local football and gave Hinkley his first coaching job at the Mortlake Football Club when he retired as a Geelong player. Their friendship and involvement in greyhound racing grew from there. Hubbard bred Cairnlea Kenny, while his wife Jan owns him. Hinkley was at Angle Park on August 9 to watch Cairnlea Kenny win the SA Sprint Final, which secured his place in Friday’s national final. “Greyhound racing is a real passion for me,” Hinkley said. “People tell you to find something that you can invest in and you love and that’s certainly how I am with the dogs.” Trainer Petar Jovanovic said Cairnlea Kenny would provide
Greyhound racing is a real passion for me PORT ADELAIDE COACH KEN HINKLEY
Hinkley with his biggest thrill in greyhound racing if he can pull off a victory. “Jan owns Cairnlea Kenny, but Ken is involved with him. In fact, the dog is actually named after Ken. Greyhound racing is a real outlet for Ken … he just loves it,” said Jovanovic who has won three National Sprint Championships. Cairnlea Kenny has had a brilliant career winning 18 races from 48 starts. This includes 11 starts from box one (where he has drawn in the final) for seven wins at an impressive strike rate of 64 per cent.
Cairnlea Kenny featured heavily in the AFL Record in Nationals week. The Crocmedia National Sprint Championship field appears in the match-day section of the Port Adelaide-Essendon game. See page 56.

Fanta Bale Australia’s best…again! by Mick Floyd
C
hampion Victorian stayer Fanta Bale was crowned the Australian Greyhound of the Year for the second consecutive year at a Gala dinner at Melbourne’s Langham Hotel on 23 August as part of Nationals week. Fanta Bale (David Bale x Ucme Typhoon) contested a phenomenal 11 group race finals through the 2017/18 racing season, winning seven including four at Group 1 level. She was prepared throughout her career by Robert Britton who trained her to win 42 of her 63 career starts before retiring in March with an Australian record $1,365,715 in prize money.
judged coursing’s Waterloo Cup for 27 years. “Ron took pride in not being paid,” announced Greyhound Clubs Australia Publicity Officer, Neil Brown. Ron was a policeman by trade before later working for Colin Hayes’ thoroughbred stable. Joining Ron in the GCA Hall of Fame in 2018 was Frances Colleen, a champion South Australian courser and broodmatron from the 1920s. Fanta Bale made it back-to-back Australian GOTY Titles.
She is the only greyhound in history to win at group one level over all three metropolitan distances. The Greyhound of the Year is judged by the Greyhound Clubs Australia Racing Committee based on performances throughout the 2017/18 season. It was first awarded in 2002 and Fanta Bale joins WA sweetheart Miata as the only greyhounds to win the award twice. The Gala dinner was hosted by Sky Racing’s Dave Carlson and media personality Mark Allen, with comic duo Marty Fields and Ken Murdoch keeping guests entertained along with RSN’s James Van de Maat, who created plenty of excitement with his phantom calls of the National Sprint & Distance Championships. New look for Victorian greyhound racing

G
reyhound Racing Victoria unveiled a new brand during Nationals week as Victorian greyhound racing embarks on an exciting new chapter in the sport’s history.
The colourful new theme incorporates the traditional colours of the eight greyhound boxes and will be evident at all 13 Victorian greyhound racing clubs and in broadcasts on Sky Racing. The vivid colour arrangement will be accompanied by a bold V, emphasising Victorian greyhound racing’s point of difference from races held in other parts of Australia.
race, while also distinguishing Victorian greyhound racing from other states and countries. “Everyone involved in Victorian greyhound racing has worked hard over the past couple of years to maintain the highest possible level of integrity in our racing program with a focus on animal welfare,” Mr Clayton said.
The new look and feel of Victorian greyhound racing will also be complemented by an accompanying tag line “Love the Dogs, Love the Thrills.”
“With those foundations set, we can also celebrate the beauty of greyhound racing as an exciting, thrilling and dramatic sport that is even more exhilarating to watch in the flesh. We love our dogs as well as the thrills of our sport and we want to bring more people in to the wonderful experience of greyhound racing.”
GRV CEO Alan Clayton said the new brand represented a renewed emphasis on the spectacle and drama of a greyhound

Peter Galo’s perfect Shepparton Cup success By Gerard Guthrie and Molly Haines
P
eter Galo continued a proud family tradition for trainer Garry Selkrig with a dominant all-the-way victory in the Group 2 CKH Painting Shepparton Cup Final (450m) on 18 August. Peter Galo was bred to celebrate country cup glory, with his sire, the underutilised Peter Rocket, winning the Horsham Cup in 2013, while his mother Flossy is a litter sister to Garry Selkrig’s former iron dog Stagger, which won an incredible 64 of his 137 starts, highlighted by the 2012 Warragul Cup. Selkrig also won the Warragul Cup in 2016 with Peter Galo’s half-brother To The Galo’s, a son of El Galo and Flossy.
Peter Galo began well to quickly head off Elevated ($7.40) and favourite Zoom Out and he then broke clear turning for home and raced away for a commanding 4.37 length victory over Elevated in 25.16sec, with Extra Gear ($16.10) finishing third. Peter Galo’s breakthrough at group level enhanced his imposing record to 17 from 28.
Earlier on Cup night, there were thrilling finishes to the two support feature events. Sharp Diamond ($6.30), trained by Wayne Vassallo, prevailed in a blanket five-way finish to the Byers Electrical Cup Night Stayers over 650m, defeating fancied pair Billy’s Bake ($2.20) and Ebby Ripper ($4.30) in 37.68sec, with only .73 separating the first five across the line. Dual Group 1 winners Raw Ability ($2.40) and Up Hill Jill ($2.80) dominated betting on the Ron Nestor Memorial over 450m, with Anthony Azzopardi’s Raw Ability stamping his return from three months on the sidelines with a gutsy 25.30sec victory.
It was a case of third time lucky for Peter Galo at group level, after finishing unplaced in the Bendigo Cup (425m) in July as well as the 2017 Healesville Cup (350m). “I am very excited. Actually, I am over the moon with him tonight,” Selkrig said. “It was a great field but after three tries at a country cup he has got there. I brought him here tonight thinking he would win. He drew out wide, which is where he needs to be. He is an absolute champion!” “I knew from early on how good he would be because he has ability plus. But not only ability, he is a beautiful kennel dog and just does everything right.” Peter Galo qualified for the $47,000 to-the-winner Shepparton Cup with a 25.20sec heat victory from box six, with Michelle Mallia-Magri’s track specialist Zoom Out setting the qualifying

Breeding unit scam alert
I
t has come to Greyhound Australasia’s attention that participants are being deceived in to purchasing breeding units (frozen semen vials) that do not exist.
To avoid finding yourself in this position, you should confirm the existence and ownership of the breeding unit before making any payment by contacting Marsha Zinas at Greyhounds Australasia on 03 9548 3655 or by email at admin@ galtd.org.au - Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
Local trainer Alan Ferguson enjoyed the biggest thrill of his 20-year training career when My Name’s David won his way into the 2018 Shepparton Cup final. The son of Spud Regis was aiming to become the first local in 24 years to win the Cup, however he encountered interference and missed a place.
Conditions for the 2018 TAB Topgun (525m) and Topgun Stayers (725m) – to be held at The Meadows on 27 October – have now been published. Check them out at themeadows.grv.org.au

This fraud occurs when a party purporting to be the owner of one or more breeding units either answers a ‘wanted’ advertisement or places a ‘for sale’ advertisement on well-known greyhound websites. Greyhound participants have paid for the breeding unit via direct bank transfer or cash in the belief that the unit exists and is owned by the party purporting to be the seller. Purchasers have been unable to recover their money when they find out they have been defrauded.

Slingshot Hammer upstaged a quality field in the Cranbourne Classic. Inset: Slingshot Hammer at the presentation with (from left) handler Brendan Pursell, owner Jay Ferguson and Cranbourne GRC President Greg Carter.
Classic case of getting under the punters’ guards by Andrew Copley and Simone Fisher lingshot Hammer claimed the Group 3 Cranbourne Classic (520m) on 25 August, and in doing so paid a generous $7.20 despite being the fastest heat winner and being drawn in box one.
S
“I have a lot of faith in Slingshot Hammer - he is turning into a really good race dog. The more he races the better he seems to be getting and he hasn’t stopped (improving) yet so it’s pretty exciting,” Ferguson said.
Owner/breeder Jay Ferguson, from the small Victorian town of Clunes, was delighted with the win, which was his best moment in the sport to date.
“My feeling heading into the race was that it would be won on the first turn and when I saw him come out and lead, I started celebrating. His heat win was a pretty good, but I was impressed with how well he jumped in the final,” Ferguson said.

“I was surprised that he paid $7.20, but if you have a look at the quality of greyhounds around him you could understand why,” Ferguson said after the Robert Britton-trained Slingshot Hammer claimed the $25,000 first prize in the age-restricted event. Slingshot Hammer (Fernando Bale – Little Hammer) won by three lengths over Undisputed (Mario Briganti) in 30.21sec, with group class pair Orson Allen (Correy Grenfell) and My Redeemer (David Geall) next across the finish line. His time was 1.5 lengths inferior to his 30.11sec best of night heat win.
A winner of nine races from 22 starts, Slingshot Hammer has now made $40,077 at just 25 months of age. “He’s got smarts about him. He thinks during his races. Rather than sitting behind dogs he will go out (wide) and (race) around them.” After trying his hand at training greyhounds, Ferguson decided the travelling wasn’t for him. He now prefers to stick to breeding and owning greyhounds.
Exciting news emerges from Cranbourne
C
ranbourne Greyhound Racing Club is introducing a new series of races over the 520m distance which will include top up prize money.
Every month starting in October through to January, Cranbourne will host Grade 5 heats and a final open only to Victorian bred greyhounds without a city win to their name. “We see this new series as a way to encourage trainers to prepare their greyhounds for racing in 520 metre events,” announced Cranbourne GRC Manager, Amanda Cameron. “Obviously not all greyhounds are up to running over 520m, but as a club we believe that with the right preparation, a lot more greyhounds are capable of competing successfully over that particular distance than what is currently the case.” In further news from out of the Cranbourne GRC, greyhounds finishing 4th to 8th in the 2019 Cranbourne Cup – to be run in February - will receive $1000 each.
Heats: 24 October, 2018 (normal prize money) Final: 31 October, 2018 (1st - $5000; 2nd $1400; 3rd $700) Heats: 21 November, 2018 (normal prize money) Final: 28 November, 2018 (1st - $5000; 2nd $1400; 3rd $700) Heats: 12 December, 2018 (normal prize money) Final: 19 December, 2018 (1st - $5000; 2nd $1400; 3rd $700) Note: Dates to be confirmed on a January series.

A 22-month-old son of Kc And All and Sweet It Is, Aston Kimetto is showing the traits of his dam, a former champion stayer who won two Sandown Cups. Despite running the fastest time among the four heat winners, Aston Kimetto paid $8.20 for the win, with Chief’s Empire ($5.30) and the favourite, NSW sensation Pindari Express ($3.20) locked in a dead-heat for second place. Bred in Grovedale by John Finn, owned in South Australia by Ray Borda and trained at Pearcedale by Seona Thompson, Aston Kimetto clocked a time of 25.71sec, only marginally slower than his heat win.
“Ability-wise Aston Kimetto is right up there with the best greyhounds I’ve had including Aston Dee Bee and Aston Bolero at the same age,” said owner Ray Borda. “That St Leger final was one of the hottest fields of young greyhounds I have ever seen, so to win from box five after coming from last says a lot about his potential.” The St Leger Final was Aston Kimetto’s fifth win from six career starts. The Warragul GRC also conducted the President’s Cup (680m) on the night, won by Matty Mateusz (David Geall). “The President’s Cup compliments our Presidents Dinner, where in the last few years we’ve honoured someone that has made an outstanding contribution to our club,” said Warragul GRC Manager, Adrian Scott. “This year we honoured former President and Life Member Garry Allen. He is one of the characters of the sport and has been around our club for about 25 years, so we were very pleased to be able to recognise Garry’s ongoing commitment.”
Cullen handles big moment with aplomb “This is the biggest win I have handled in and to do it at my local track is a huge thrill,” young handler Michael Cullen said. “Not Available always tries his heart out, and for Geelong to host a race with a $10,000 first prize is great money for a country club.”
Not Available with handler Michael Cullen and Geelong GRC Chairman, Mark Pearson.
“I count myself really lucky to be able to help out a trainer like Robert and even more grateful that my involvement stems back to (Robert’s father) Allan Britton.”

Craig said the mystique surrounding racing a greyhound three times in a day has largely been broken down thanks to a coursing video series produced by GRV, and he insists that it isn’t just the greyhounds that are benefitting. “From the country kitchen to the volunteers helping in the catching pen, to the family involvement on the day. This is the successful formula, and this is the thing everyone that goes coursing mentions. The fact their dogs race better on the circle after coursing is a bonus!” Craig said.
Why coursing is back in vogue By Andrew Copley
V
ictorian greyhound racing’s shift in culture has had a flow-on effect into coursing.
Coursing numbers spiked in 2018, and National Coursing Association President, Peter Craig believes one of the main factors is the willingness of participants to persist with their greyhounds for longer.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

“It appears people that are hanging on to their dogs for longer and therefore the need to give these dogs opportunities has increased,” Craig said. “The relatively safer environment of coursing is perfect for older dogs, and I have no doubt we will see an increase in the demand for veterans racing next coursing season.”
12
Coursing is run by a dedicated band of volunteers, with NCA Secretary Sue Delaney among the most devoted. Sue’s motivation is simple – she sees coursing as an imperative avenue for greyhounds. “Coursing freshens them up. Our three current active tracks at Longwood, Benalla and Lang Lang all present different and unique environments, and the benefit of having this variety shows in how happy the dogs are going to the slips,” Sue said. “There are quite a few dogs no longer capable of winning on the circle due to injuries or other issues, but coursing prolongs their racing lives and that’s what I believe it’s all about. Rosacky Thunder (trained by Darren Archer) is a prime example. He won the GOTBA Challenge and the Western Saws Cup this season after recovering from two dropped back muscles. He can’t go around bends anymore, so straight track racing is the answer for him.” Coursing nominations have risen from an average of 93 greyhounds per meeting in 2016 & 2017 to 107 per meeting in 2018. That’s an increase of 15 per cent.
Trainers share their views on coursing… PURISTS – Experienced coursers “I love the social side of coursing, but from a racing perspective it’s amazing how much greyhounds improve after coursing. If you look at the likes of Billy’s Bake and Zipping Nitro, who are group-class stayers. Coursing is part of the reason they are so good. So many greyhounds win in their next start after coursing because they’re super fit, and Benalla has the best grass surface track in Australia” – MURRAY COLLYER “The weekly grind of racing in eight-dog fields can knock greyhounds around a bit, and as a result they lose confidence. We use Lang Lang to course our race dogs who are not performing at 100 per cent and are needing something different. They tend to chase a lot harder at Lang Lang because they aren’t getting knocked around and with the drag lure running along the ground they absolutely love it” - LISA HELLMUTH COMEBACK KIDS – Made a return to coursing in 2018 after an extended break “I’d definitely advise people to give coursing a go. I’m going to be doing a lot more of it now. I brought a few dogs up to Longwood earlier this year and they had some success winning a few courses there. I reckon it’s great” – RAY HENNESS
“I decided to give coursing another go after trying it eight years ago. I took Dyna Sarah (sister to Dyna Patty) to Lang Lang for a Maiden (female) event to give her confidence. I know how talented she is, but she had been running low on confidence in eight dog fields. She took to coursing like a duck to water, winning her first maiden event. She was calm during the day and pulled up so well after each course. I even had people tell me she needed to come back for the Waterloo Cup” – CLINT CAPUANO FRESH FACE - Coursed for the first time in 2018 “Something I learned pretty quickly is that circle form goes out the window when it comes to coursing and that is something that really shocked me. You would think if you take a handy city dog coursing it would perform, but after watching the two coursing events I went to I soon realised that this isn’t necessarily the case. There is a perception that greyhounds who go coursing are lesser dogs, they may find it difficult on the circle tracks but they sure can perform coursing” - JAMES SHAW

Bear Left with (clockwise from left) Cranbourne GRC President Greg Carter, NCA President Peter Craig, Murray Collyer, trainer Ray Henness and Ray’s daughter Ivy.
To win, Bear Left had to course one-on-one six times up the 310m straight across the weekend without defeat, and he beat highly-rated female sprinter Julana in the final course after the pair were neck and neck for much of the race. It was an all Bendigo final, in fact, with Julana’s trainer Dallas Massina being from Golden Square. Bear Left, a son of El Grand Senor and Angel’s Chorus bred in NSW by Benjamin Sweetman, is no stranger to the coursing circuit. He won the Loot Lodge Rod Millington Maiden Dog at Benalla in April under the guidance of his previous trainer, Calven Russell of Kyabram, before being purchased by Con Dimopoulos and given to Henness to train. Henness, who advised Dimopoulos to purchase Bear Left, confessed that coursing wasn’t in his sights when the purchase was made.
WATERLOO CUP:
Bear Left claims coursing’s greatest honour By Molly Haines
O
nce upon a time Ray Henness said he’d never course again, but all of his fears were dispelled as his greyhound Bear Left took out the 145th running of the Waterloo Cup on the weekend of 18 & 19 August at Lang Lang. The win completed a successful return to coursing this season for the Heathcote trainer after his one and only previous experience on the plumpton didn’t go to plan. “Fifteen years ago I took a dog up to Werribee (to course), put him in the slips, off they went and he stood there and looked at me. He wouldn’t go a yard. I thought, gee, I won’t be doing this again,” Henness laughed. Bear Left will now have his name inscribed on the official Waterloo Cup trophy, which stays in the keeping of the National Coursing Association, and the enormity of the moment wasn’t lost on Henness. “It’s a big thrill and a huge honour. This event is just so big…it’s fantastic,” he said. Considered Victorian greyhound racing’s ultimate test of speed and stamina, the Waterloo Cup is Australia’s oldest greyhound race the culmination of each coursing season. Bearand Left broke away from Julana in the last
“We definitely bought him for circle racing, but here we are. Basically, after we bought him we heard that he went pretty good when coursing with his previous trainer.” Henness said.
"When he wasn't going out of the boxes too well for me I thought let's give it a crack." The victory capped a huge 24 hours for Henness, who the night before was at the Group 2 Shepparton Cup in which Extra Gear, a greyhound he bought for just $8500 at GRV’s Ready 2 Race Greyhound Sales last November, ran third to Peter Galo. Henness paid tribute to good mate and experienced courser Murray Collyer, who played a lead role in Bear Left’s successful Waterloo Cup weekend. “Without Murray I wouldn’t have been able to have this dog right. Some people know I was at the Shepparton Cup last night and was unable to make it (to Lang Lang) yesterday, so I left the dog in the care of Murray and he has done a super job for me,” he said. For the second year running the Waterloo Cup final was streamed live on GRV’s Facebook Page, with hundreds of greyhound racing fans tuning in to watch history unfold.

Eleven groups were hand selected to a special presentation on the night after they were asked to write in 100 words or less why their organisation is deserving of $10,000, and what impact the money would have. Receiving the major prize of $10,000 was Springvale Learning & Activities Centre, an organisation which provides food, clothing and bedding to those in need. They also help cover costs for children’s education and medical prescriptions. During 2017/18 they aided 500 individuals and families. “It’s amazing to have the opportunity to reward groups and people who do so much great work at the heart of the community,” said Greyhound Community Fund Engagement Officer, Tammy Collins. Springvale Neighbourhood House claimed the 2nd prize of
$2000, while South East Melbourne Vietnamese Association Council (SEMVAC) and Yooralla Disability Service received $1000 each. The Greyhound Community Grants Fund is a joint program of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club and Greyhounds Entertainment, extending financial support to non-profit organisations that provide quality programming in the areas of health, recreation and community events and festivals that benefit the community in the City of Greater Dandenong. The Community Group Awards is one of two major events for the year hosted by the Greyhound Community Fund, with ‘Superhero Awards’ held on TAB Melbourne Cup night each November. The Healesville GA now has the support of the Sandown GRC. Photo by: Clint Anderson.
Healesville and Sandown join forces By Renn Barker he Sandown Greyhound Racing Club (SGRC) is providing Administrator Services to the Healesville Greyhound Association (HGA) for a two-year period, which commenced on 1 August, 2018.
T
with the SGRC to become the administrators. The SGRC has the necessary resources, capabilities and experience to support both HGA’s normal day-to-day operations and strategic development.
Under this agreement, officially approved by the GRV Board, SGRC Chief Executive Greg Miller, has been appointed as the HGA administrator during this period, while Cynthia O’Brien is continuing in her role as Manager of the HGA.
Beyond providing on-going administrator services, a key responsibility for the SGRC will be to identify, work with and recommend potential Committee members at Healesville, who have the skills and knowledge to lead the HGA for the future. The administrator’s recommendations will be considered by the GRV Board when it appoints the new Committee that will give HGA its own administration once again.
GRV does not anticipate this change in administration will cause any disruption for the HGA’s staff, members and racing program. GRV has been administrating the HGA since 2014, working closely with Cynthia to develop the club’s facilities and operations. However, it has never been the GRV Board’s intention that any club should operate under GRV’s direct administration for an extended period. As part of a process to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced administrator for the HGA, GRV assessed strong proposals from several clubs before entering negotiations
GRV thanks the SGRC Management and Board for their commitment to the future of the Healesville GA and the sport, as well as the members and staff of the HGA for their patience and understanding during this process. The HGA plays a unique and vital role in Victorian greyhound racing and this new administrative partnership will help ensure a vibrant and sustainable future for Healesville’s position as one of the world’s leading venues for straight track racing.
Raw meat-based diets: Things to consider By Dr Suff Suharju (GRV Senior Veterinarian)
R
RMBDs are those diets that include uncooked or undercooked ingredients derived from domesticated or wild-caught food animal species and can include skeletal muscles, internal organs and bones. In undertaking a review on RMBDs, the authors identified that the major problem in discussing potential benefits of any RMBD is the lack of good and reliable data from high-quality studies. However, evidence of infectious disease risk to dogs and human when feeding RMBD are strong and compelling.
It is recommended participants give consideration to solely feeding a reputable commercially prepared dry food. Alternatively, the feeding of cooked meat that is fit for human consumption will reduce the risks of infectious disease and prohibited substances, providing high hygiene standards are implemented and maintained in food-preparation and storage areas. GRV does not support the feeding of knackery meat as it commonly leads to positive swabs, while poor handling practices tend to increase the risk of disease.
For more information on feeding raw meat-based diets go to goo.gl/gvyQnA Good hygiene practices are essential when it comes to feeding raw meat products. Photo by: Clint Anderson.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
RMBDs have an inherent risk of bacterial and parasitic contamination, and dogs that consume RMBDs pose a risk of infection to themselves, other dogs and people. Those individuals with a known or suspected low or compromised immunity such as the young, elderly, pregnant, ill-affected and on certain medication, are at greater risk of contracting infection and should take steps to maintain high food preparation (hygiene) standards and/or avoid contact with dogs fed RMBDs.
Those who continue to feed RMBDs should conduct their own individual risk-benefit analysis. They will need to identify if they are at greater risk, or if they have had previous outbreaks, and ensure they undertake necessary steps to mitigate those risks. Where feeding RMBDs are maintained, ensuring high hygiene standards are implemented and maintained in food-preparation and storage areas is the bare minimum, but it is very likely outbreaks of diarrhoea from a ‘bad batch’ of meat will continue, as will the high prevalence of parasitic infection.
SEPTEMBER 2018
aw meat-based diets (RMBDs) are prevalent in the greyhound industry with many greyhound trainers generally believing it to be a superior diet to high quality commercially prepared dry foods, as they provide the flexibility to tailor the diet (e.g. ability to alter protein, fat or carbohydrate content) based on what is believed to have been most successful for them in the past at influencing the health and well-being of their canine athlete.

Latest news from the ICG By Suzanne McKenzie
T
rack safety was among the issues discussed at the latest Industry Consultative Group (ICG) meeting on 14 August.
The group discussed GRV’s review into track safety, including a focus on the sand used for track surfaces and its treatment; this is no doubt one of the factors that can impact on minimising racing injuries, which is a priority issue for GRV. Members noted that a range of factors impact track safety, including surface sand, gradient and track design elements such as straight or circular and the number/location of turns built into a track. GRV will provide more information to the ICG when the review is completed later this year. A paper recommending that dogs five years and older should be vet-checked before and after a trial was discussed and will be considered more fully at a future meeting. Members also discussed the risk of dogs returning positive swabs when they have been fed certain types of human-grade food; whilst human-grade food is generally less likely to contain prohibited substances than feed from other sources, such as knackery meat, the risk is not zero, especially with some types of seafood. There was agreement that participants need easy access to information about types of food that should be avoided in the 48 hours prior to racing to reduce the risk of returning a positive swab. The Committee was advised that GRV’s new Integrity website will be a future source of this important information.

The meeting heard that GRV’s stewards were receiving training to ensure that marring charges are applied consistently, and that information about the Code of Practice (CoP) for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds will be rolled out during 2019, supported by road shows. Feedback was provided on GRV’s Transport Policy and how it related to the CoP’s transportation requirements. The possibility of developing a Cold Weather Policy was briefly discussed noting the Transport Policy does address requirements for transporting dogs in cold weather.

In 2016, the Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria appointed an Industry Consultative Group (ICG), with members having appropriate experience and diversity across a number of areas. The ICG meets every two months to discuss major issues facing the industry, out of which suggestions are forwarded to GRV’s Board for consideration.
A road show about the Code of Practice is on the agenda in 2019.
The ICG panel comprises of Bernie Carolan (Chair), Dr Barbara Backhoy, Deborah Churchill, Steven Clarke, Tracey Corneille, Terry Davis, Sheldon Hamilton, Brian Jones, Nicole Lund, Daniel Nugent, Sandra Reed, Heather Villinger and Tom Welsh.

News By Sandra Reed President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.
T
here has been a concerted effort over the past few months by people who oppose greyhound racing to have articles published that try to make our sport and participants look bad. This is very frustrating when so many good people are working hard to lift the image of our sport. Many of these reports are full of misinformation or just straight out lies, and they go unanswered. Hopefully this is about to change as discussions are underway with concerned groups including our organisation about how to hold these people to account. So if you see articles that condemn our sport, please notify us so that we can refer it to someone who may act upon this. We must never be complacent when it comes to defending our right to race greyhounds. That is why we are becoming more active politically and requesting position statements on greyhound racing from each of the state’s political parties who will be contesting the next election on 24 November this year. The other changes as a result of the Racing Amendment Bill 2018 is the establishment of two new bodies. The Victorian Integrity Board and the Victorian Racing Tribunal also recommends that two extra Board members be added to GRV. We will be requesting that both of these two new members should have experience in greyhound racing. Fortunately, since the criticism of our sport it has caused people to come together in defence of our rights, and we are able to recruit dedicated participants into our organisation. The most recent one to join our committee is Stan Ralph. Stan has many years of experience

in greyhound racing and he also runs a domestic boarding kennel, so his experience with dogs is vast. He is a welcome addition and will be invaluable in future decision making. Stan, along with fellow GOTBA representatives Geoff Miles, Robert Britton and Geoff Collins, is on GRV’s Racing Reference Group, so we are hoping to change track conditions by encouraging GRV to conduct scientific trials on many aspects of track safety, and in particular track surfaces. The most common concern of trainers is track surfaces, which sometimes are too hard, too soft or too wet, and all of these variables can cause injury . We find now some trainers arriving for trials, checking the track surface and choosing not to trial. This should not happen! We need consistency and the best possible surfaces to race and trial on, especially now with a limited number of racing dogs available. We are also lobbying for no short distance races to be held at our metropolitan tracks. This would be a serious step backwards and only encourage people to breed a weaker class of greyhound. We believe it would be better to have Tier 3 dogs that race over 500 metres and veteran races to fill this gap. Heats could be conducted at country tracks and finals at Sandown Park and The Meadows, with the higher prize money a bonus to the owners and trainers of these dogs as they would receive city prize money for the finals. Many Tier 3 greyhounds can run 500 metres or more, but often don’t get the opportunity. Please help us to support greyhound racing by becoming a member of the GOTBA and please contact us with any concerns you have and ideas on how we can improve our industry.

Rob and Laura from Cranbourne North had been waiting since 5.00am to adopt Graham. The couple travelled to Seymour a few days earlier and instantly fell in love with the brindle boy. “It was his beautiful gentle and kind nature. He is so placid but still has playful puppy nature about him,” Laura said. A bonded pair of greyhounds, Mickey and Peka, found a new home with Melissa and Andy and their son Elijah. The family attended the event to find out more information about the
program but they couldn’t deny the connection they had with the pair. “We had always wanted to have two dogs and our friend who has a couple of GAP dogs couldn’t speak highly enough of the breed,” Andy said. Adoption days aren’t the only way people can adopt a greyhound from GAP, as our Seymour kennels are open Monday – Friday from 8:30am to 4pm, and on Saturdays by appointment. GAP also have a Melbourne based facility in Baxter which is open on Saturdays and Sundays by appointment only.
There is a huge demand for pet greyhounds in Victoria and the Greyhound Adoption Program currently has a number of vacancies in their pre-entry assessment sessions. For more information turn to Page 31.

BUYING OR SELLING GREYHOUND PUPS?
GREYHOUND WEEKLY IS VICTORIA’S #1 PUBLICATION FOR GREYHOUND CLASSIFIEDS
Receive Victorian
FREE in your inbox each week.
Note: Victorian Greyhound Weekly operates independently of GRV.
Don't wait, apply for DNA today!
G
1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet
3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration. GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.
For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

GRV’s new VicGreys program is generating up to $1.4m in bonuses to Victorian breeders and owners across 1,900 Victorian races each year. Full details at: grv.org.au/vicgreys
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
RV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early. For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows:

Great news for Victorian breeders
T
he timeline to waive breeding fees (15 November 2017 to 30 June 2018) for litters bred in Victoria has been extended.
Reimburse fees paid to Greyhounds Australasia for greyhound DNA analysis ($180) for named female greyhounds
A decision on how long these waived fees will continue will be made in mid-September following consultation with various stakeholder groups.
GRV will continue to: •
•
Waive fees related to registration of breeding females ($150), registration of results of mating ($50) and application to register service ($40)

on stud dog services, pups, race dogs and various greyhound products, which makes it a vital resource for breeders, owners and trainers. Founding Editor and Publisher Roger Clark has greyhound racing in his blood, and is a huge supporter of many aspects of the code including coursing, re-homing former race dogs and, his number one passion, greyhound bloodlines. “Greyhound Weekly has a Facebook page which lists the previous day’s metropolitan results from Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia, West Australia and Tasmania,” Roger said. “From there I compile a summary of all of these results, chart the winners for every sire and present monthly metropolitan sires lists for Victoria and New South Wales.”
Home-grown publication reaches a ton
V
ictorian Greyhound Weekly published its 100th edition on 30 August.
Being Victoria’s only independent greyhound publication and boasting a value-for-money classifieds section, Greyhound Weekly is imperative to the fabric of Victorian greyhound racing. Greyhound Weekly has an unrestricted capacity to publish ads
Roger’s uncle, the late Jack Baines, was a legendary coursing trainer and breeder, with the Lang Lang Coursing Club being named ‘Baines Park’ in his honour. “Uncle Jack had a huge influence on my love for greyhound racing, along with other coursing stalwarts including the late Noel Banks, Ray Herbert and others, back in the 1960s, while Rod Deakin and Ned Bryant were other early mentors who helped foster my interest in breeding.” The influence of such legends has led to Roger’s selfproclaimed “lifetime commitment” to the sport, and the presence of Greyhound Weekly is testimony to that commitment. Greyhound Weekly’s website - victoriangreyhoundweekly. com.au - has received more than 250,000 hits over the last 12 months and more than 600 subscribers receive their copy by email every Thursday morning. While the majority of subscribers are from Victoria, the publication is read in almost 20 countries around the world.
Greyhound Weekly: How it all began
T
he current incarnation of Greyhound Weekly was started by Roger Clark in October 2016.
Roger started his career as a greyhound journalist back in 1973 when the original Victorian Greyhound Weekly started and he has had a weekly column in some publication every week since - 45 years in total.
An ad promoting the original Greyhound Weekly magazine.
When the original Greyhound Weekly newspaper closed in 1998, after 25 years, he was the only contributor remaining from the first edition. During his 25 years contributing to Greyhound Weekly, he also had the first ever greyhound column in Australia’s largest rural newspaper, The Weekly Times for 13 years and his breeding charts were published in the original greyhound Adviser for ten years, under the leadership of legendary race caller Bill Collins, who was Greyhound Racing Control Board Chairman at the time. SEPTEMBER 2018
He was then snapped up by the new National Greyhound Form newspaper, produced by the late Bill Pearson, who he had known for over 30 years. “After ten years, Bill had stepped back from the business and I was lured to Australia’s oldest greyhound newspaper, The Greyhound Recorder, fulfilling a lifetime ambition,” Roger recalled. “Following internal troubles there some five years later I returned to National Greyhound Form where I stayed until it closed suddenly in early 2016.”
Roger was quick to see the opportunity, registering the name Victorian Greyhound Weekly, and started his own online magazine style format. The rest, as they say, his history.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Australian Greyhound Racing, Australia’s first online greyhound magazine style publication, quickly took up Roger’s weekly Talking Breeding column, including Victorian Metropolitan Sires lists, which had been running for 40 years, but “the ill-fated ban on greyhound racing in NSW saw them abandon the weekly format”.

that GAP adopted more than 1,300 greyhounds into the homes of Victorian families in the 2017 financial year? That’s an average of more than three per day!
*NEW GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

BOOK NOW! Workshop: Injury Identification and First Aid for your Greyhound GRV is pleased to offer registered participants a series of half-day practical workshops covering Injury Identification and First Aid in partnership with Dr Chris Boemo. They are free of charge. Participants will be provided with some useful resources to take away. Numbers are limited to 15 people per workshop, and will be held at the following locations: Shepparton Meadows Warragul Cranbourne Bendigo Warrnambool Geelong
Wednesday 26 September 2018 4.30pm - 9.00pm Thursday 27 September 2018 10.00am - 3.00pm Wednesday 3 October 2018 10.00am - 3.00pm Friday 16 November 2018 10.00am - 3.00pm Monday 19 November 2018 10.00am - 3.00pm Friday 23 November 2018 10.00am - 3.00pm Thursday 29 November 2018 10.00am - 3.00pm
With a focus on practical application, the workshops will assist participants in identifying, preventing and treating injuries or illnesses that can impact on a greyhound’s ability to get to the race track and successfully race. The workshops will begin by establishing a baseline healthy greyhound, before identifying both the physical and behavioural changes that can be indicative of an illness or injury. Following this, some key principles of preventative health will be discussed. This will include topics such as the impact of feeding regimens, vaccinations, and exercise on the racing greyhound. The final topic will assist participants with the examination and treatment of their greyhounds, with a focus on areas such as bandaging techniques for soft tissue injury and fracture support, and exercise rehabilitation techniques and the overall management of injuries. Given the practical nature of the workshops, participants will be encouraged to bring their own greyhounds. To book into a session, please contact GRV on (03) 8329 1118 or email welfare@grv.org.au

National Rule changes have taken effect of Greyhound Australasia (GA) rule amendments took Asuite effect in Victoria from 22 August, 2018. The changes updated five rules to provide more information, clarification, and, in some cases, will bring greyhound rules in line with other racing codes. GA implemented the changes on March 1, 2018 and GRV has now endorsed the amendments following a review and consultation with Victorian participants. In particular, participants should note amendments to Rule 83A Raceday Treatment. This rule has been extended to prohibit the use of an injectable substance on the day before a race meeting, as well as on the day of the race meeting. The change will clear up confusion in the way the rule has been applied from state to state and will give participants the best chance of presenting their greyhound free of prohibited substances on race day. Participants are also advised that GAR 1 has been amended to clarify the definition of Prohibited Substances, which now incorporates more detail and examples of prohibited substances.
The amendments will not significantly change the way laboratories conduct testing or report the detection of prohibited substances. Participants are not expected to remember all of the categories listed but every participant should be aware of what substances are being given to their greyhounds and are advised to talk to their vet if they need advice. The following national rules took effect on August 22, 2018: • GAR 1 – Definition of Prohibited Substances • GAR 1 – Norethisterone exemption • GAR 21A – National Ban on Consecutive Days Racing • GAR 79A – Out of Competition Testing • GAR 83A – Restrictions on Treatment Prior to Racing • GAR 84A – Treatment Record Requirements To read more about the rule changes visit: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/rules-of-racing
