CEO’s Update As we saw out December 2018, some highlights of that month included the first leg of the Gippsland Carnival, the Sale Cup, on Boxing Day which is covered in this issue along with Australia’s first ever National Greyhound Draft, held on Sunday 16 December. The Draft was a great success and I congratulate Greg Miller and his team at Sandown Park and Greyhound Clubs Australia on delivering an exciting new way to enter the sport and to promote its appeal for prospective owners. GRV’s 2017-18 Annual Report was also tabled in Parliament in December and is now available online at www.grv.org.au/ about-us/grv-annual-reports. Highlights in the Report include attendance at Victorian greyhound races up by 9.2 per cent to more than 211,900 and national wagering on Victorian greyhound racing up 11 per cent to a record $2.26 billion over 2016-17. This strong industry performance, combined with an increase in prizemoney to a record $45 million and a $7.8 million investment in infrastructure during 2017-18 points to a strong, sustainable future for Victorian greyhound racing.

Other funds in the Victorian Government package will go towards major upgrades of the Traralgon and Cranbourne tracks. Traralgon has been closed because of drainage issues that raised major racing safety concerns. Traralgon race meetings will be rescheduled with the preference being to conduct the meetings in the Gippsland region. The Traralgon Cup, which was scheduled for Australia Day 2019, has been postponed until a date to be confirmed. I recognise this is a very significant disruption for participants in the Gippsland region, but we must continue to prioritise racing safety and animal welfare to help secure the sport’s long-term future. The second leg of the Gippsland Carnival, the Warragul Cup, is still going ahead on 12 January along with plenty of other racing action including the Australian Sprint and the Maidment Memorial at Sandown Park on 24 January. It is shaping up to be very interesting year for greyhound racing in Victoria and GRV will be announcing some exciting new developments for both punters and participants in the next few months so stay tuned. Finally, I wish all participants a happy and safe festive season and thank you all for your wonderful contribution to greyhound racing, welfare and re-homing in 2018.

Turning now to the track, I’m pleased to announce that, as part of the Victorian Government funding package for the sport announced last October, minimum prizemoney at metro race meetings at Sandown Park and The Meadows is getting a $1 million funding boost over the next two years. Starting this month, the minimum prize money for these metro meetings is increasing by $400 per race. This is the first major prizemoney increase for Tier 1 metro racing since 2014 and complements increases in Tier 2 and 3 stakes announced in November 2017.

JANUARY 2019

An important part of securing this future will be the sport’s ability to re-home all retired greyhounds wherever possible. This has been given a significant boost by removing the requirement for retired greyhounds without a GAP Green Collar to wear muzzles in public from the first of this month. However, as I mentioned in the last issue of the Monthly, we all need to ensure that the growing popularity of greyhounds as pets is not affected by the behaviour of ones that have been re-homed without being sufficiently prepared for their new lives. So it’s still very important the 28-day wind-down period is observed and a retired greyhound’s temperament and behaviour is properly assessed, whether through GAP’s PetCheck program or other channels. I note here that the new Code of Practice will require that from 1 December 2020 that all re-homed greyhounds are desexed and I strongly recommend that all owners planning to retire their greyhounds before December 2020 take this step anyway. The low maintenance and relaxed character of greyhounds is central to their appeal as great companions and we all need to protect this. Speaking of which, GAP is

holding a three-day Adoption Bonanza at its Seymour HQ on 18-20 January and I encourage you to spread the word for anyone thinking about getting a dog.

It was a fantastic evening of entertainment with former England cricket captain – Sir Ian Botham, in attendance. Sir Ian Botham captivated the crowd of 200 people with stories of his cricketing career and the people he has met along the way. He has owned around 60 greyhounds, including a young litter he bred in New Zealand.

Greyhound racing's favourite former footballer and GRV Racing Ambassador, Brent Harvey also had the crowd hanging off his every word as he spoke of the secrets behind his longevity in the AFL and how he has fallen in love with greyhound racing. RSN’s James Van de Maat was on hand to discuss his love of our sport as well as the art of race calling. We couldn’t forget the laughs provided by stand-up comedian Marty Fields, who also admitted a soft spot for

greyhound racing, hoping he would have a lot more to do with the sport as time goes on. “It was a great night at Warragul and a wonderful feeling to have so many passionate supporters of greyhound racing in the one room,” said GRV Chairman, Bernie Carolan. “To have people of the calibre of Sir Ian Botham and Brent Harvey supporting our sport really shows the direction we are heading and I’m looking forward to a fantastic Gippsland Carnival.” The Gippsland Carnival kicked off at Sale on Boxing Day, which saw Neo Cleo claim Victoria’s richest Country Cup. Next up is Warragul on 12 January, and after the past two Melbourne Cup winners (Ando’s Mac and Aston Dee Bee) have gone on to win the Warragul Cup, can this year’s winner, My Redeemer continue the tradition? Due to the safety of the Traralgon track being compromised following drainage issues, the Traralgon Cup has been postponed until the track has been rectified or redeveloped. Sale will pick up the third leg of the Carnival hosting the Australia Day meeting with Dane Swan in the Trackside Party paddock, live music, free sausage sizzle and fun for all. Cranbourne concludes the TRFM Gippsland Carnival on 9 February.

Marty Fields provided plenty of laughs at the Gippsland Carnival Launch.

Cleo’s Cup

H

ometown star Neo Cleo claimed a well deserved feature race breakthrough with a popular local victory in the Group 1 Gold 98.3 FM Sale Cup (650m) on Boxing Day.

“We are very emotional about this win and we can’t thank the Sale Greyhound Racing Club enough for what they are able to put together. It is a great night to be a part of.”

Neo Cleo had twice finished runner-up at Group level, in the Hume Cup and McKenna Memorial, beaten less than a length on both occasions, while she also ran sixth in the Sir John Dillon Memorial.

While it was Neo Cleo’s slowest of her four straight victories at Sale, it was by far the most lucrative, with the $75,000 winner’s purse.

A daughter of Cosmic Rumble and Ruby Ha Ha, Neo Cleo had won her previous three starts over Sale’s 650m course, winning her heat and final of the Sale Distance Championship and then setting the pace in the Cup heats when clocking 36.87sec.

“She is a pretty calm greyhound at home. The only naughty thing she does is pull her mat out because she prefers to sit outside in the sun.

“She is absolutely perfect,” Wendy Neocleous said.

Drawn in box six, Neo Cleo started an easing $2.70 favourite, ahead of Dyna Chancer at $4.50, with Neo Cleo’s litter brother and kennelmate, Blackjack Neo, on the third line of betting at $5.80 from box one.

Other feature action on Sale Cup night saw Fully Loaded, trained by Neville Wakefield, claim the $15,000 winner’s purse in the Gippsland Carnival Sprint Final (440m) for the second year running.

“I am so, so happy with what she has been able to achieve,” said a delighted Wendy Neocleous.

Seona Thompson’s $1.70 favourite Azkaban won the Sale Motor Group Summer Cup Final (520m), while Anthony Azzopardi’s Whiskey Riot, which also started at $1.70, secured his third win from four starts in the DunkleysMachinery Rising Stars Final (440m), with both races worth $10,000 to-the-winner.

“She has finally done it – got a Group 1 – and we couldn’t be happier. We are absolutely rapt.”

Melbourne Footballer Max Gawn couldn’t resist a photo with Gippsland’s favourite greyhound, Jesaulenko after he ran fourth in the Gippsland Carnival Sprint.

Azkaban claims the Sale Motor Group Summer Cup Final (520m) in front of the biggest Boxing Day crowd Sale has ever seen.

After a customary tardy getaway, Aston Kimetto was at the rear of the field as Dyna Hunter ($6.90) crossed to the lead and dashed clear. $4 million boost to prizemoney and funding for safer racing

T

he Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) has approved a $1 million increase in funding for minimum prizemoney for selected metropolitan races and $3 million towards track improvements over the next two years, commencing from 1 January 2019. The increases are funded by the $4 million election commitment from the State Government to support increases to the minimum levels of Victorian greyhound prizemoney and investments in improving greyhound safety. Minimum prizemoney for level 1 metropolitan races at The Meadows and Sandown Park will increase by $400 per race from 1 January 2019. Prizemoney for races at these meetings, which are predominantly conducted on Saturday nights at The Meadows and Thursday nights at Sandown, was left unchanged when the previous round of prizemoney increases were announced in November 2017 for level 2 and 3 meetings across the state.

In addition to the increases in minimum prizemoney, the package includes funding allocated to investments in safer racing in Victoria targeted at track improvement projects at Traralgon and Cranbourne. GRV is looking at implementing similar methodologies in track design and greyhound safety features at these tracks to what was employed in the successful rebuild of the Horsham track last year, resulting in significantly reduced racing injuries. GRV Chairman Bernie Carolan said the prizemoney boost and the track safety projects are were a clear indication of Victorian greyhound racing’s direction. “Our sport has come a long way in a short period of time and an increase in prizemoney for the top tier of racing is only further proof that we have a strong future ahead of us,” Mr Carolan said. “We are appreciative of the ongoing commitment shown by the Victorian state government to ensuring that Victoria remains the premier state for greyhound racing in Australia. “Victoria has provided some of the best racing you will ever see around the world and as we strive to meet participant and community expectations, our sport will continue to grow.”

The son of Fernando Bale and Heidi Go Seek had finished second in four of his five Group 1 attempts which included the Topgun, Winter Cup, Australian Cup and National Sprint. Hasten Slowly surprised everyone including owner, trainer and breeder Angela Langton when he jumped cleanly to the front in the Brisbane Cup from box three. “I was pleasantly surprised when he began so well, and I knew it would take a pretty good dog to run him down because he does have strength on his side.” Hasten Slowly paid a staggering $8.70 on the TAB tote – phenomenal, considering he claimed the Group 3 Flying Amy Classic at the track and distance in June.

The Brisbane Cup win was a special one for Langton who was born, raised and worked in Queensland before greyhound racing bought her to Victoria. “It is always special to win on your home track,” Langton said. “Extra special because we reared and raced his mother (Heidi Go Seek) and bred, reared and raced Hasten Slowly’s litter too.” It was a great night for the Fernando Bale x Heidi Go Seek litter, with litter sister Go Seek Heidi recording a victory at Sandown while litter brother Go Seek Fernando ran second. When Hasten Slowly won the Group 3 Flying Amy Classic at Albion Park earlier this year – litter brothers Go Seek Fernando and Aldrich also recorded wins.

Conducted on Sunday December 16, 30 of the country’s best bred pups available were shared between 10 teams headed by prominent trainers, owners and media. There were 20 shares in each team and each team selecting three greyhounds. An ‘Expression Of Interest’ process enables those interested to join one of the teams. Some teams were full within minutes and all now have full lists (20) and waiting lists.

It’s great to get them to the track, but it is another level to get them involved which is what horse racing has done so well with syndication. It’s important for the long term success of our sport.” “GSS would like to thank everyone who made the event a success and the participants involved who recognised their role in the sport. They are commended for studying and being prepared.” Given the success plans are for the Draft to become an annual event. The Teams

“The interest was high. It’s hard to know how many are first time owners, but with every share there may be four or five people contributing to it. It’s all about growing the greyhound family,” explained Sandown CEO Greg Miller.

Andrea Dailly – Trainer (Vic)

Each share cost $2550, which represented five per cent of a chosen team. The cost was made attractive to those on the sport’s fringe by having no on-going training fees.

Ben Rawlings – Trainer (SA)

Team members will be a part of a great experience, not only enjoying the thrill of their greyhounds racing but also involved in on and off-track events.

“It’s about engaging the next generation of young greyhound enthusiasts.

Peter Lagogiane – Trainer (NSW) Tom Tzouvelis – Trainer (Qld) Ray Borda – Owner (SA) (Trainers: Anthony Azzopardi, Paul Abela & Troy Murray) Peter Cameron – Owner (WA) (Trainers: Angela Langton, Tony Brett & Andrew Crouch) James Van de Maat – Media (Radio RSN) (Trainers: Matt Lanigan, Brendan Pursell & Kate Gorman) Troy Little – Media (Radio SEN) (Trainers: Jason Sharp, Ian Garland & Glenn Rounds)

Melbourne Cup winning owner Ray Borda knew he wanted an Angie Rocks pup on his team and after the dog was taken at pick number two, he jumped on the opportunity to have the female on his heat.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Million Dollar Chase winning trainer Peter Lagoniani’s first selection was a Barcia Bale x Saving Bundles dog. He chose this pup as his first selection after hearing Saving Bundles’ second litter broke in well.

Robert Britton – Trainer (Vic)

JANUARY 2019

“Greyhound Syndication Solutions (GSS) now have a contracted working relationship with a financial service provider. There will be opportunities for syndicators around Australia to work with us if they wish to advertise, promote and grow.”

Ashlee Terry – Trainer (Vic)

A YEAR IN REVIEW

2018

GREYHOUND

RACING VICTORIA BY RENEE MOK

2018 was another fantastic year in greyhound racing that saw the National Greyhound Championships come to Victoria, as well as exhilarating Group racing, Country Cups and racing put on by the 13 clubs with an increased focus on safe racing. The Greyhound Adoption Program continued to make strides in re-homing retired greyhounds including the inaugural National Greyhound Adoption Day, recordbreaking Adoption Days and fun-filled community events to build awareness of the breed as a pet.

Once again, GRV has worked hard to position the sport of greyhound racing as a thriving and sustainable sport with animal welfare and integrity at its core. This year also included successful charity events, awards recognizing industry leaders, and an Integrity in Sport Conference.

GRV CEO Alan Clayton, Melinda Walters and GRV Deputy Chairperson Peita Duncan at the Ballarat Cup.

Melinda is a greyhound enthusiast both on and off the tracks, and she couldn’t help but fall for the loveable Jimbo. Now, nearly two years later, Melinda is still attending GRV events and telling everyone how ecstatic she is to have found her goofy Jimbo. “He is our loyal, loving, funny boy and his goofball nature never ceases to amaze us. He always finds a way to make us laugh… He’s now come right out of his shell and is no longer the timid boy he used to be,” she said.

Big Jimbo finally found a forever home

GAP strives to find retired greyhounds like Jimbo forever homes. The next adoption days will be held from January 18-20 in Seymour, but you can also visit the GAP locations to adopt a greyhound during business hours or by appointment. Learn more at gap.grv.org.au.

S

ometimes it takes time to find the perfect home for our greyhounds. Take GAP’s poster-boy, Jimbo, for example – the ever-enthusiastic greyhound was typically thrilled to meet new people and known for his ballerina’s walk when he got excited, but he would get really overwhelmed at Adoption Days. After attending five Adoption Days, a message was sent to the GAP Community to help Jimbo find a forever home. Melinda Walters saw the post and read about Jimbo’s anxiety during Adoption Days, so she made an appointment to meet him oneon-one at GAP’s adoption centre in Seymour.

O

n Sunday, 9 December 2018, GAP hosted a Christmas Party to thank all the volunteers who have made the program a success over the past year.

More than 70 volunteers, their families and greyhounds came out to the Royal Botanical Gardens for a festive holiday picnic with live-music, delicious BBQ and a visit from Santa. This year marks GAP’s 22nd year as one of the leading greyhound adoption programs and well over 1000 greyhounds were adopted through the program in 2018. This couldn’t have been done without the support of the GAP volunteers who dedicate significant time and effort to help our retired greyhounds find forever homes.

GAP volunteers assist the program by providing community engagement at GAP events, assisting greyhounds with the transition to pet-life through enrichment at the kennels and fostering dogs that aren’t quite ready to be adopted, lending a hand at the GAP Café, and much more. “This year’s Christmas Party is just a small token of appreciation by GRV and GAP for the amazing efforts of all our volunteers,” said GRV CEO Alan Clayton during the event. “The continued success of GAP is only possible due to the ongoing support from our dedicated volunteers and we look forward to continuing this relationship for years to come.” GRV and GAP are grateful to all our fantastic volunteers and the party was an excellent opportunity to personally thank them for all their hard work. GRV CEO Alan Clayton saying thanks to the Volunteers.

If you want to assess your greyhound’s prey drive yourself, you will need to introduce your greyhound to an unfamiliar dog and observe its behaviour. This must be done safely by ensuring the greyhound is always muzzled and held on a leash. If the greyhound displays any signs of predatory behaviour, you should cease the assessment immediately.

Take Our Lead: Greyhound owners’ responsibilities with regards to changed muzzle laws

“It is important to strive for a successful adoptoin from the beginning and the key to success is offering as much informaiton as possible, including whether the greyhound should wear a muzzle in public.”

By Renee Mok

B

eginning 1 January 2019, all retired greyhounds will not be required to wear a muzzle in public.

Signs of Predatory Behaviour: •

An upright stiff tail that is wagging quickly

Intense staring at the small dog with a stiff body position

Stalking

In order to maintain the reputation of greyhounds as great pets, we need to work together to ensure all greyhounds who are re-homed are ready for pet life, and adopters are fully aware of their new greyhound’s characteristics and level of prey drive.

Teeth chattering or drooling

Hovering above or over the shoulder/neck of the small dog

Prior to 2019, only greyhounds who had successfully passed the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) were legally allowed to go out in public without a muzzle. Since greyhounds are no longer required to have a GAP green collar to be muzzle free, there is a risk that a greyhound may not be sufficiently wound-down after racing.

Jumping at, or pouncing on, the small dog

Lunging

Nose bunting or pawing at the small dog

Barking at the small dog

Chasing the small dog

Attempting to grab (bite the small dog)

Greyhounds are still legally required to be on a leash in public.

“This change in legislation puts the onus on greyhound owners to make sure their dogs are ready to be re-homed”

GRV recommends owners wind-down their greyhounds for at least 28 days and all greyhounds being re-homed have a proper small dog assessment before they move into their new homes. You can do an assessment yourself or register for a GAP ‘PetCheck.’

GRV have developed some booklets to help you wind down and rehome your greyhound. Visit https://greyhoundcare.grv. org.au/rehoming/. Please contact GAP if you would like any further information or advice about re-homing your greyhounds.

JANUARY 2019

This change in legislation puts the onus on greyhound owners to make sure their dogs are ready to be re-homed. In addition to teaching your greyhounds pet skills, it is important to socialise them with smaller dogs and possibly other small animals and children.

Re-homing retired racing greyhounds is an integral part of greyhound racing in Victoria and contributes to the integrity of the sport. Therefore, it is important to strive for a successful adoption from the beginning and the key to success is offering as much information as possible, including whether the greyhound should wear a muzzle in public. This allows adopters to clearly understand what the greyhound might be like and what they will need during the transition to pet life.

Minister at GAP Café

V

ictoria’s Minister for Agriculture, Jaclyn Symes, visited the GAP Café in Melbourne on 18 December to promote the removal of muzzles in public for all retired racing greyhounds from 1 January 2019. Joining her on the morning for coffee was GRV CEO Alan Clayton, GRV Chair, Bernie Carolan and Rosie Streatfield and Sean Stanton from GAP and a few greyhounds. You can find out more about the muzzles coming off at: www. takeourlead.com.au

Cory Hiscock suggests as a minimum, surfaces should allow a paw depth of 15mm.

Summer is Here By Leeanne Crawford

S

ummer has arrived with a bang, bringing dry, hot and windy weather that sucks the moisture out of everything, especially the yards, runs and tracks that greyhounds are kept in and exercised on. If left alone, dried out or hard yards and tracks can result in injuries to greyhounds of any age during galloping or exercise. Puppy yards, rearing yards, slipping tracks, trial tracks and competitive yards may need extra attention during this time to prevent these injuries.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

During the year, Track Curators ensure that their surfaces are prepared in a consistent manner when it comes to texture and moisture content. As Victorian participants will appreciate, at times we can experience all four seasons in a 24-hour period.

22

“Part of good track management is accounting for these weather changes and watering their surfaces correctly. All this work occurs to maintain surfaces to the highest levels of safety with the assistance of penetrometer and moisture reading equipment,” The Meadows Track Manager Cory Hiscock said. “One element that Curators don’t have control over is what occurs with greyhounds when at home or on training facilities (slipping tracks/galloping areas). It is vital for the continued good health of your greyhounds that you pay particular attention to the surfaces greyhounds may be exercising on.”

“If possible, ensure an even texture that hasn’t become too firm due to moisture evaporating quickly. Surfaces at a minimum should allow a paw depth of 15mm and can be blended with saw dust to help maintain moisture. Wetting agent products are also available.” “A sandy surface will loosen when dry while a clay-based surface will harden significantly. Yards and runs may require regular harrowing to maintain the surface depth for clay-based surfaces or higher levels of watering for sand based surfaces.” Sand, saw dust or soil can also be added to yards along fences to provide extra cushioning in heavily used areas. The dogs will work the extra topping into the ground as they run. These are all excellent maintenance jobs that, if completed regularly, will pay dividends in minimising the risk of shock or physical stress type injuries such as fractures or dislocations as well as reducing wear and tear on young, growing greyhound bodies before they get to the race track. A couple of other things to think about when exercising greyhounds in summer. When walking greyhounds around your local area, it’s best to walk early in the morning or late at night as hard paths and roads can get so hot during the day the pads of their feet can burn. Also, “Be aware that ovals and similar grassed areas where you may be permitted to exercise greyhounds can also get quite firm at this time of the year,” Hiscock concluded.

Are you fire ready?

The Country Fire Association (CFA) have great online resources to ensure you are ready this fire season. Steps you should consider taking to be prepared: 1. Visit https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au 2. Contact your local Fire Brigade so they are familiar with you and are aware how many animals you have in case there is a need to evacuate in the future. 3. Attend a CFA run Fire Preparation Meeting to discuss what a fire can do in our local area, how best to prepare and what you can do in the case of a fire.

Racing Report By Vaughn Lynch General Manager, Racing

Prize money increase explained Minimum prizemoney for level 1 metropolitan races at The Meadows and Sandown Park will increase by $400 per race from 1 January 2019. This increase will equate to approximately $500,000 per annum. Prizemoney for races at these meetings, which are predominantly conducted on Saturday nights at The Meadows and Thursday nights at Sandown, was left unchanged when the last round of prizemoney increases were announced in November 2017 for level 2 and 3 meetings across the state. The increases are funded by the $4 million State Government funding to support increases to the minimum levels of Victorian greyhound prizemoney and investments in improving greyhound safety. The Gippsland Carnival The Warragul Cup (460m) final will be held on Saturday 12 January and makes up the second leg of the Gippsland Carnival. All trainers that race on Warragul Cup night go into the draw to win one of 5 X $1,000 Coles Myers Vouchers. Trainers must be on course to collect the voucher. Traralgon update The third leg of the Gippsland Carnival at Traralgon has been postponed until a date to be confirmed. Detailed investigation following recent meeting cancellations has identified that the drainage issues have compromised the track which has resulted in The Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club being closed indefinitely. GRV will work with the TRGC to agree on the optimal approach to rectifying or replacing the track which may include a total redesign. GRV is working with clubs to reschedule Traralgon race meetings with the preference being to conduct the meetings in the Gippsland Region for the benefit of local trainers.

Racing population update The active racing population in Victoria is continually being monitored with a number of options being explored to better utilise the current racing population. The number of dogs currently eligible for level 3 racing does not match the number of level 3 meetings available on the weekly schedule and efforts are being made to increase the number of level 3 opportunities.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Listed are when GRV VIC BRED Series commence during January and February 2019.

Six-dog maiden races Commencing 1 February, GRV will trial six-dog maiden races at Ballarat, Cranbourne and Shepparton. The trial will run for three months and be advertised in GRV’s FastTrack calendar. Trainers must nominate for the maiden event with Maiden six-dog Program next to the event to be considered. A maximum of four six-dog Maiden races will be programmed at each meeting. If insufficient nominations are received for the meeting, the number of six-dog Maiden races may increase accordingly. The pilot program will test the impact of six-dog Maiden Races and GRV will consult further with industry participants prior to making long term decisions.

JANUARY 2019

GRV VIC BRED Series races are designed to promote and reward Victorian Bred Greyhounds. Each series is designed to give an equal opportunity to a variety of greyhounds, of similar grade and experience, a chance to compete for above average prizemoney. GRV VIC BRED Series are open to Victorian Bred Greyhounds and all provincial finals carry a VICGREYS Bonus.

The Warrnambool Seaside Festival The Warrnambool Seaside Festival is underway as this edition goes to print with the inaugural Warrnambool Summer Sizzle (450m) Final being held on Saturday 12 January. Greyhounds must be whelped on or after 1st September 2016 to be eligible for the $25,000 tothe-winner event. The Anniversary Cup (450m) will also be held at Ballarat in January along with the Kings and Queens series at Healesville.

that GAP adopted more than 1,300 greyhounds into the homes of Victorian families in the 2017 financial year? That’s an average of more than three per day!

From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine.

Welfare Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare

Local Rule 42.6 Explained Local Rule 42.6 was amended on 1 October 2017 to include compulsory activities to be undertaken by greyhound owners, designed to ensure that every suitable greyhound is given the opportunity to be re-homed as a pet into a suitable home before euthanasia can be considered. These compulsory activities include a minimum “wind down” period for the greyhound, away from racing life, and multiple re-homing attempts. There are, however, exemptions which may apply if there is a legal requirement to euthanase, or where a greyhound suffers from a serious medical or behavioural condition.

Re-homing Support GRV’s Welfare and Re-homing Department is pleased to announce the release of a comprehensive participant rehoming support package to aid participants in winding down, re-training and re-homing greyhounds. GRV has launched this package on our Care and Standards web page, emailed links to all participants and provided hard copy packages to clubs for participants to collect. The re-homing support package includes two booklets for use:

Euthanasia of an otherwise healthy greyhound should always be the absolute last resort. Wind Down Period The rule requires a minimum of 28 days away from all racing related activities to ready the greyhound for life as a pet. A greyhound can be re-homed during the wind down period. Medical or Legal Exemption: Greyhounds requiring immediate euthanasia on humane grounds, or under a court order, can be euthanased without completing the wind down period. Evidence of these grounds will need to be obtained and provided to GRV by the greyhound’s owner; in the case of a medical exemption this is a GRV Euthanasia Certificate.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

Re-homing attempts Owners must make certain genuine attempts to re-home their greyhound after the wind down period, including at least one GAP Pre-Entry Assessment. As well as the medical or legal exemption referred to above, there is a behavioural exemption to the requirement to attempt to re-home.

32

Behavioural exemption: Where a greyhound has significant identifiable behavioural issues such as aggression towards humans or other animals, owners may seek an exemption from re-homing requirements on behavioural grounds. They must submit a GRV Re-Homing Unsuitability Certificate signed by a registered veterinarian at the same time as submitting a Notice of Intention to Euthanase. This can only occur after the wind down period requirements have been completed. Notice of Intention to Euthanase If all attempts to re-home the greyhound have failed, and an owner is considering making a decision to euthanase their greyhound, they must submit a Notice of Intention to Euthanase (NoI) to GRV via FastTrack, at least 14 days before the greyhound is intended to be euthanased. Euthanasia After submitting the NoI, the owner must wait at least 14 days before they can euthanase their greyhound. GRV Euthanasia Certificates must be completed by the veterinarian and then submitted to GRV within 3 days. Further Information To ensure that owners fulfil their responsibilities under Local Rule 42.6, GRV has developed the Racing to Retirement booklet and a Retirement Process Checklist to assist with navigating requirements during the retirement process. These are available to download on the Care and Standards website.

RE-HOMING GUIDE

INFORMATION FOR

PARTICIPANTS

1. Re-homing Guide – Information for Participants, provides important and practical information to assist participants with re-homing their greyhounds on retirement. This guide includes information about preparing your greyhound for re-homing, winding down after racing, recognising prey drive, re-training activities and obtaining support.

2. Re-homing Guide - Information for New Owners has been developed for participants to pass onto the new owner of the greyhound. The guide includes a form for participants to complete that will ensure that all relevant information about the specific greyhound (including RE-HOMING GUIDE any health and/or behavioural issues) is INFORMATION FOR passed onto the new owner, along with NEW OWNERS helpful information about caring for a greyhound and all legal requirements relating to pet greyhound ownership. The guide includes a microchip change of owner form and information to satisfy the re-homing requirements under the new Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds that will be required from 2020. GAP is also offering free PetCheck assessments. Similar to a GAP pre-entry assessment, PetCheck will assess a greyhound’s prey drive when exposed to small dogs but it is for greyhounds not going to GAP. A PetCheck can be obtained at any time; that is, there is no requirement for a 28-day wind down before assessment. GRV encourages participants to consider a PetCheck to determine which wind down and retraining activities are best suited to their greyhound’s needs. PetChecks can be arranged for both before and after wind down by contacting GAP on 03 5799 0166. For copies of the booklets please visit https://greyhoundcare. grv.org.au/rehoming or your local club. Finally, in 2019, GRV is planning Greyhound Re-training Workshops aimed and providing participants with practical training in recognising prey drive and undertaking socialisation and re-training activities. Further information will be made available in the new year.

If you have any concerns or questions about your obligations, or need advice about complying with the rule, please contact GRV on (03) 8329 1100. GRV also has a re-homing support package to help you wind down and re-home your greyhound. This package can be downloaded from https:// greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/rehoming or hard copies obtained from your local club.

January 2020. That is when participants must be ready for and in compliance with the Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds.

Separately and together, GRV and GOTBA Vic will be preparing for Code implementation. GOTBA Vic anticipates having material available in 2019, including templates for adaptation, that we hope will assist you. One thing we encourage everyone to do in the next few weeks is to find 30 minutes to read the Code (or to read it again), to reflect on your involvement with greyhounds and consider what things you may need to do as a result of the Code before January 2020. The Code is available at http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_ file/0010/348166/Code-of-Practice-Keeping-Racing-Greyhounds.pdf Our goal should be to be Code ready no later than 3-6 months before Code commencement. The Code preparation process should be interactive: the more you talk to us and tell us what you are uncertain about, what is working and what is not, the more likely we,

as a sport, are ready for the change on time. Over the summer, GOTBA Vic committee members have been and are progressing a number of participant issues with GRV both within and outside GRV’s committee processes. GOTBA Vic and GRV do not always agree on their resolution, but we will endeavour to tell you why and to achieve the best outcome practicable. In 2019, members will receive regular updates on exactly what we are doing for you: a list of activities or issues (and their progress) will be regularly available and updated on our website: https://gotbavictoria. wildapricot.org/ We encourage you to contact us about any aspect of those matters (or others). GOTBA Vic is committed to being an open, transparent organisation for its members, one that enhances and projects the voices and interests of greyhound racing participants at every level for the benefit of all of them. We best do that by hearing from you and from your active membership with us. Join us.
