CEO’s Update Last month saw a great win by Dyna Hunter in the Warragul Cup, the second leg of the Gippsland Carnival, and you can read more about it in this issue. However, the Carnival’s third leg the Traralgon Cup, has had to be held over this year as Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club is scheduled for a major redevelopment. It is expected that Traralgon will be open for racing again in late 2019. I acknowledge the inconvenience this has caused but as always, we must ensure that the safety of the racers comes first. The Carnival itself is now in its third year and, judging by the very strong attendance numbers at the Sale and Warragul Cups, is now very much a major highlight of Victoria’s greyhound racing calendar. In other news, GRV’s main phone number, (03) 8329 1100, is now staffed after working hours and during weekends and we have also opened a new Feedback Office to officially receive all complaints, suggestions and compliments about the regulation and management of greyhound racing and welfare in Victoria. Anyone can provide feedback through this Office at: grv.org.au/feedback, whether they are a participant, a stakeholder or a member of the community. The overall goal of the Office is to let participants raise issues and share fresh ideas about how we can do things differently to keep improving greyhound racing in Victoria. Participants have a wealth of knowledge and experience that GRV is keen to use to help build a strong and sustainable future for the sport. The Office will carry out transparent and accountable investigation of all complaints and pass on suggestions and compliments to the relevant areas within GRV. It can be contacted about matters such as: race day operations; track and club facilities; decisions by stewards or judges; GRV and club policies, procedures and services; animal welfare, health and safety issues and syndication management. Information about integrity matters should continue to be referred to the Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit (GRIU) which can be contacted via the GRIU Hotline: 1300 856 109.

form of a “Q&A” approach, conducted at race clubs on race days. The sessions will build on previous years to create a greater understanding and awareness of the role and responsibilities of the Commissioner, the work the office has undertaken, and give an overview of what is in place to ensure that the Victorian Racing Industry operates free from the influence of crime and corruption. You can find out session dates in your area and submit questions in advance at: racingintegrity.vic.gov.au Moving to greyhound welfare issues, the removal of the muzzling requirement for retired greyhounds now makes it easier for participants to directly re-home their retired greyhounds without the need for the assessments carried out by GAP. However, this means we need to take extra care in ensuring such greyhounds are well prepared for their new lives, both for the dog’s sake and for the reputation of the breed. So, I am asking that participants planning to rehome ensure their dogs undertake the 28-day wind-down period and appropriate socialisation and that new owners are clearly informed about the status of vaccinations and desexing for the greyhounds they are adopting. And a reminder that GRV’s Hot Weather Policy is very much in force at this time of the year and that all participants should be checking regularly with FastTrack and the Bureau of Meteorology’s ‘Detailed 3-Hourly Forecast’ to see which race meets may be affected. General heat advice and support is also available through GRV Racing Services and all Victoria’s greyhound racing clubs are ready to provide temporary accommodation to ensure greyhounds can be relocated from properties under threat of fire.

Dyna Hunter made it seven from seven out of box eight.

avourite Dyna Hunter celebrated a deserved country cups triumph when enhancing his perfect record from box eight in the Group 2 Warragul Toyota Cup Final (460m) on 12 January.

It was a case of fourth time lucky in a provincial feature for Dyna Hunter and trainer Steve Collins, with the son of 2014 Melbourne Cup hero Dyna Villa having run second in the Ballarat Cup and fourth in the Healesville Cup.

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

He was also scratched from the Geelong Gold Cup due to injury after winning his heat in the best time of the night. Dyna Hunter qualified for the $47,000 to-the-winner Warragul Cup after running second in his heat, where he was run down by fastest qualifier, Elevated in 25.48sec. Drawn perfectly in box eight, from where he boasted an unblemished six from six record, Dyna Hunter started $3.40 favourite in a keen betting affair, ahead of Orson Allen ($4.40), Big Flood ($4.60) and his heat conqueror Elevated ($4.90). Dyna Hunter came out running to lead youngster Jebrynah ($10.20) and Big Flood and forged clear turning for home as he defeated the brave Jebrynah, which was having just his eleventh start, by 2.46 lengths in 25.54sec. “Box eight is the perfect draw for him because he isn’t always the best out of the boxes,” said Jake Collins, son of trainer Steve.

“To win a country cup after being beaten on the line in the Ballarat Cup made this win that much more special!" The win was a credit to the Collins family after their newlycrowned Warragul Cup victor suffered a serious shoulder injury at just his second start, only one week short of one year ago.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

“It was a fantastic achievement from mum and dad,” Jake said. “From the first day he came to our kennels I was drawn to his fruity personality. He is the kind of dog that you can sit in the kennel with him and he will put his head on your lap for a pat.”

Earlier in the night, the highly-anticipated return to the track of Rippin’ Sam ended in disappointment, with the superstar stayer finishing at the tail of the field in the Warragul GRC Distance Cup over 680m.

Comedian Dave O’Neil and AFL great Matthew Richardson hosted a Calcutta event on Warragul Cup heat night.

Rippin’ Sam started as the $1.90 favourite for his first appearance back since September 16 but dropped back alarmingly early in the proceedings as Correy Grenfell’s Dyna Chancer ($2.20) romped to victory.

Local produce has once again come to the fore throughout the Gippsland Carnival.

In the first of two ‘Dyna’ cup successes for owner Brendan Wheeler on the night, Dyna Chancer, runner-up in the Group 1 Sale Cup at his previous start, claimed the $10,000 winner’s purse in a new course record time of 38.58sec. The son of another Wheeler-bred Melbourne Cup winner in Dyna Double One (2015) smashed multiple Group 1 winner, Ring The Bell’s previous benchmark of 38.82sec.

the races. Norma was hands on from the moment they were born, and when they come to us they’re in good condition. Norma was great with the pups and what happens in the rearing stages influences the way they race,” she said.

The blue chaser was undefeated throughout the threeweek series, which brought together the country’s best young male sprinters, and he had an impressive all-the-way finish to claim the $100,000 winner’s purse with a time of 29.73sec.

Barooga Brett was one of the last greyhounds reared by Norma. The Ennis’ own a kennel in Lara where they train around 15 dogs and the set up has proven to be a good fit for the greyhound.

Since first being held at The Meadows in 1999, the Silver Chief has been won exclusively by Victorian-trained sprinters and Barooga Brett’s victory continued this unprecedented streak. Barooga Brett, owned and trained by Brooke Ennis, has had an outstanding few months of racing; first he won a Melbourne Cup Prelude, followed by the Group 3 Melbourne Cup Night Sprint, and then his first Group 1 race.

Norma was renowned for her expertise in rearing pups and for keeping her greyhounds when they retired from racing. She passed away last November following a long battle with illness, leaving behind a great legacy. Brooke became friends with Norma when she trained her superstar greyhound, Lady Toy, four years ago.

Barooga Brett (1) is challenged by Sennache in the run to the first turn.

“We are really thrilled to win a race like this,” Brooke said following the Silver Chief. “We are so proud of ‘Bretty Boy’ as he was brilliant throughout the series.” The Silver Chief victory pushed Barooga Brett’s prizemoney total over $214,000 and his form at the Broadmeadows circuit makes him one of the leading contenders for the upcoming Australian Cup.

A big crowd was on hand to witness Barooga Brett snare his first Group 1 win.

He does his own thing and likes a bit of attention. Whether at the races or in the kennel, he’s cool and relaxed. We usually find him asleep upside-down on his bed.”

Pippa Rea’s best friend Amyius and mum Jasmine lay eyes on Chippa for the first time at last month’s Silver Chief Final.

f you haven’t been touched by the story of Chips And Trains then I am sorry to tell you but you have been living under a rock.

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

Chips And Trains is a West Australian bred greyhound who is owned by Warrnambool resident Virginia Rea. Chips And Trains is racing in memory of Virginia’s daughter Pippa, who passed away after battling for 21 months with an aggressive Brainstem Tumour called a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glimoa. Pippa was 11 years old when she passed away leaving behind her mother Virginia as well as older brothers James and Patrick. Pippa was metaphorically bitten by the greyhound bug when she visited relative Linda Britton’s kennels in WA, where she took on many vital roles which most importantly included naming every puppy born on the property. Pippa also left behind one race name; Chips And Trains. What does this mean you may ask? Well Pippa had a young friend Amyius who would come around to eat chips and play trains.

Amyius embraces Chippa for the first time following his Silver Chief run.

Fast forward to the present and Chips And Trains is taking the greyhound world by storm. He is a winner of two WA Group races, he has made the transition to racing in Victoria against the big guns and he is Instagram famous, that’s right INSTA FAMOUS. Chippa, as he is known around the kennels is trained between siblings Linda and Jeff Britton, the latter based in Victoria.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Throughout his recent stay in Victoria, Chippa qualified for the Group 1 Silver Chief Final at The Meadows, where he finished last to Barooga Brett after finding a bit of trouble on the first turn.

Chippa and his fanfare who travelled from Warrnambool didn’t let defeat get in the way of a good time with a meet and greet following the race. Now remember how Chips And Trains got his name, through little Amyius. Well Amyius isn’t so little now and was bursting with excitement to meet the athlete who is racing in memory of one of his best friends. Amyius is also very excited because when Chippa calls it a day on the race track, he will take up residency with Amyius’ grandmother Lea. Bluestream’s Clint Anderson captured the first moments Amyius and Chippa met (am I biased in calling him the best greyhound photographer in the world? Ahh oh well, I will run with it). Now Clint wasn’t that impressed with the lighting, but I think it is perfect.

Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development, Jaclyn Symes announced a $50,000 grant for the Greyhound Adoption Program.

GRV Deputy Chair Peita Duncan brought her greyhound ‘Blue’ along to the opening day.

Records fall at GAP three-day adoption event By Lauren Marie and Phil Weir

A

new record for the number of greyhounds adopted at a single event has fallen with 111 greyhounds finding new homes at the Greyhound Adoption Program’s three-day adoption event in Seymour (January 18-20). After 70 of the 115 greyhounds up for adoption found homes on the opening day (Friday), a further 41 went home with their new families on Saturday. This brought the total number of greyhounds adopted across the weekend to 111, surpassing the record set last year of 103. Due to the overwhelming response, the planned Sunday event was cancelled. On hand at the event was the newly appointed Victorian Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development, Jaclyn Symes.

While at the adoption day, the Minister also revealed a grant for GAP for $50,000, for improvements to the facility. The 3-day adoption event was remarkably successful; 111 dogs found homes in the first two days, and by the Sunday only two were left (who have since found foster homes). The event was especially unique because GAP waived adoption fees for all dogs who found new homes over the weekend, guaranteeing a large crowd at Seymour. This year, for the first time, GAP waived the $75 adoption fee for the adoption event.

“This just shows the love affair the Victorian public has with the greyhound breed.” GRV Deputy Chair Peita Duncan said it was no surprise that the record was broken. “This just shows the love affair the Victorian public has with the greyhound breed,” Ms Duncan said. “The secret is out and there are now thousands of greyhounds in homes and apartments right across the State.

The Minister had previously shown her support for the adoption programme by paying an official visit to the GAP Café in King Street, West Melbourne where she met with GRV management and board members and familiarised herself with the greyhound café concept; the first of its kind in the world.

“The most pleasing thing about the weekend is we have found loving homes for more than 100 of our beautiful greyhounds. I’m sure all the people who have taken home greyhounds this weekend will join me in saying well done again to our GAP staff who have matched them with their new family member.”

hiskey Riot extended his winning record to five from six on 12 January when he claimed the $35,500 Warrnambool Summer Sizzle (450m), concluding the latest edition of the annual Warrnambool Seaside Festival, which saw the club conduct eight race meetings in 17 days.

Boxing Day is a big achievement on his behalf. He is a dog that can do it at both ends; he has great early pace and he hits the line strong,” Azzopardi said. Whiskey Riot is a half-brother to Million Dollar Chase winner, Mystic Riot.

The son of Fernando Bale and Ready To Riot jumped from box eight as a hot $1.70 favourite in the age-restricted feature.

“Whiskey Riot’s breeding is royal; by one of the best sires we have seen in Fernando Bale and out of Ready To Riot, who has continually thrown impressive greyhounds.”

Whiskey Riot, who is trained by Anthony Azzopardi and owned in NSW by Sandra Camden-Bermingham, produced a best of the night 25.12sec run prompting praise from his trainer.

It is Whiskey Riot’s bloodlines and his ability to ‘do it at both ends of the race’ that has Azzopardi believing he could one day have stud potential.

“He is a young dog and I probably threw him in the deep end putting him in this race, but he had shown so much beforehand and I felt it was a race he was ready for,” Anthony Azzopardi said.

“I have never said something like this, but this dog is something different.”

ary Robinson was the recipient of the Noel Banks Medal at the 2018 Victorian Coursing Awards at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club on 24 January.

A long-serving member and President of the Longwood Coursing Club, Gary typifies the dedication of the many volunteers who have kept the coursing code in existence for more than 140 years. “I’ve been involved with the Longwood club for 20-odd years including the past 12 as President, and I find myself at the club two or three times a week, depending on what needs to be done,” Gary said. I look forward to coursing her pups in a couple of years,” Lithgow said. The 2019 Victorian coursing season kicks off in April with its popular Catch on to Coursing meetings, while the following clubs will host this year’s sought-after feature events… Lang Lang: Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship Benalla: Derby & Oaks Longwood: Waterloo Cup

“Gary loves racing and he loves coursing, but he doesn’t race his greyhounds at Longwood because he is busy helping run the meetings,” said National Coursing Association President, Peter Craig. “The Noel Banks Medal honours the famed greyhound administrator who won an unprecedented 11 Waterloo Cups with greyhounds he either bred, owned or trained. This Medal recognises a person’s outstanding contribution to coursing, and Gary is certainly a deserved recipient.”

“Coursing numbers grew 15 per cent in 2018 and while there are a number of enormous benefits to coursing, the main one is that it gives greyhounds another avenue. We look forward to another big season ahead, where we are hoping the growth will come in the form of coursing maidens, and we will also be holding an increasing number of veterans races.”

Pursell has been working closely with top trainer Robert Britton for more than three years and became a qualified trainer last November. He officially started training Rippin’ Sam in January.

Despite not having raced since September because of a cracked hock, Tornado Tears has been instilled the pre-noms favourite to win the Group 1 Zoom Top (725m) invitational on opening night of the carnival (16 February).

He went on to say that Tornado Tears had been trialling against Rippin’ Sam, with little separating the sons of Fernando Bale and Tears Siam, and that Tornado Tears was unlikely to have a start before the Zoom Top.

Rippin’ Sam made his comeback from a sesamoid (wrist) injury after a four-month layoff on Warragul Cup night (12 January), but he tailed off and finished last to a rampaging Dyna Chancer. The Stewards’ Report read that Rippin’ Sam sustained an injured left wrist, left triangle muscle and bruising around the left calf during the run, and as such a 14 day stand down period was imposed.

“He (Tornado Tears) will be going straight in as it’s hard to get a race over 700m. He seems okay, he’s pulling up good (from his trials). We just have to make sure his injury is alright and keep on top of that,” Pursell said. Hear the full interview with Brendan Pursell at grv.org.au/ podcasts

Roger Express (2) made up many lengths to run down halfbrother Wise Piquet in a thrilling Grade 5 Final over 600m.

Metro-based Moody bucking the trend By Renee Mok and Andrew Copley

M

elbournians thinking about training greyhounds in the city need look no further than Josh Moody for inspiration. Josh lives in Deer Park, just 18km west of the CBD, and works full-time as a fire technician. Josh began training less than three years ago and his greyhound Roger Express (Premier Fantasy – Serena To Excel) achieved a career highlight for himself and his trainer when narrowly taking out the $12,000 to-the-winner VicGreys Grade 5 Final (600m) at The Meadows on 11 January and paying $16.50. He was the most experienced greyhound in the race, with the victory taking his record to 12 wins from 76 starts, including three victories from his past five races. “It was a massive thrill. He got a bit jumbled up at the start but managed to get through on the rails,” a delighted Moody told RSN’s Off The Leash. Training two greyhounds in suburbia has its challenges, but Josh says he has a lot of support from his ‘mumma’, who prepares his greyhounds’ meals, as well as a network of friends. Since he doesn’t live on acreage, he has found places nearby to exercise his dogs including Altona Beach.

Once upon a time there were hundreds of greyhound trainers based in the suburbs of Melbourne until the convenience of galloping on larger properties became the norm, however Josh is proving that training from a house block is still a viable option. When asked if he had any advice to offer prospective metropolitan trainers, he said “You get (out) what you put in. So, put time in your dogs and you’ll see results. Don’t be afraid to ask people for advice in the industry, be consistent and the results will show.” To hear the full interview listen to the 16 January podcast of Off The Leash (go to 7:31) at grv.org.au/podcasts. Owner trainer Josh Moody is all smiles after the race. Photos courtesy Jason McKeown Photography

In addition to walks on the beach, Josh has his greyhounds ‘checked’ after their races by a muscle man in the western suburbs and if he’s sore he takes him for massages at Perfect Pulse Performance, a company that works with thoroughbreds, to help him recover as quickly as possible.

Josh refused to attribute Roger Express’ recent spike in form to a purple patch, insisting he has been a model of consistency throughout his career.

Roger Express has now earned more than $50,000 in prize money after being purchased by Moody as a pup for just $500.

FEBRUARY 2019

“Our day starts at about 5am. Roger wakes up with a bit of a bark to say he’s good to go for the day, so we’ll take him down to the Altona Dog Beach in the back of the wagon, give him a quick stroll through the water, relax his muscles a bit, and go home for breakfast after that,” Josh explained.

“He is consistent and honest as they come,” Josh said. “He has run second to (Melbourne Cup winner) My Redeemer and ran third to (Maturity Classic winner) Dyna Patty four starts back, so we’re really proud of him. He is part of the family and is my best mate.”

Greyhound racing clubs establish fire evacuation centres By Renee Mok

V

ictoria’s 13 greyhound racing clubs have established evacuation centres to provide temporary accommodation to ensure greyhounds can be relocated from properties under the threat of fire. Last month there was a massive bushfire in Gippsland and several greyhound kennels were evacuated, including the Spolly’s Syndications kennel in Kilmany. The greyhounds were safely relocated to the Sale Greyhound Racing Club, where staff did an amazing job of supporting local participants and greyhounds until the fire subsided. There were approximately 35 greyhounds that spent the night at the Sale GRC kennels on 4 January, along with Longford trainer, Gary Sciortino, who chose to stay with his greyhounds.

EMERGENCY PLANNING: •

· Country Fire Authority – Bushfire Survival Plan https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare

· Agriculture Victoria – Pets in emergencies http:// agriculture.vic.gov.au/agriculture/emergencies/pets- in-emergencies

Discuss your plan, record it and share it with your family and staff at your kennels.

Prepare a list of preferred boarding kennels, animal shelters or friends who would be able to provide a temporary house and care for your greyhounds – this may include your local greyhound racing club’s evacuation centres

Give a trusted neighbour, family member or friend, who is familiar with your greyhounds, a key to your property in case they need to access your greyhounds.

Ensure your greyhounds are identified with visible markers, such as a collar, and their vaccinations are up to date in case they need to be admitted to a boarding facility or shelter.

Ensure your contact details are on GRV’s FastTrack portal

“We weren’t in direct threat, but we have six dogs. We had to get them out of there,” Gary said. Spolly’s Syndications trainer, Jessica Baldwin said it was a horrible night. They evacuated as soon as they got notice with fellow trainers helping them relocate their dogs. Spolly’s took 12 racing dogs, 20 puppies and a litter of newborns to the Sale GRC.

Jessica says they were lucky. When they checked the fire authority website in the morning, the evacuation notice had been lifted and their property was not hit by the fire. However, the experience made her realize the importance of evacuation plans and making sure you have insurance to cover fire damage.

12

“The trainers work so hard with their dogs,” Jessica said. “It would be devastating if anything happened to them. At least you can relocate the greyhounds and make sure they’re okay. There are some kennels that have way more dogs than us. They should really figure out what they’re going to do should they have to evacuate.” Bushfires are a recurring issue for rural and regional areas in Victoria, so greyhound participants need to be aware of potential fires near their kennels, prepare for possible bushfires and have an emergency plan in place should evacuation be required. To reduce the risk of fire, maintain the areas where your greyhounds are kept. Keep grass cut low around kennels, yards, and exercise runs. Remove all garden waste or rubbish that may be fire hazards. Ensure your greyhounds always have a water supply that they can’t spill and will last them several days, even if you expect to be home soon. You should have an emergency plan to relocate your greyhounds quickly and efficiently should you receive notice to evacuate. Remember - leaving early is the safest option to protect yourself, your family and your greyhounds.

Prepare an emergency plan for bushfires

In the event of an emergency, you may have to leave your property at very short notice. Preparing an emergency kit in advance will ensure you have everything needed to care for your greyhounds. Below is the GRV emergency planning checklist: •

Food and water for at least 3 days

Leads, muzzles and travel crates

An information list including your name, address and phone numbers

Greyhound first aid items and essential medication

Greyhound medical history, vaccination certificate and veterinary contacts

Blankets, towels and bedding

If there are fires in your area, monitor the CFA (www.cfa.vic. gov.au) and BoM (www.bom.gov.au) websites and social media channels, and contact your local club for further advice regarding activation of evacuation centres.

STAY UPTODATE

Current information about the Hot Weather & Transport Policies available online • The internal temperature of a vehicle or trailer transporting greyhounds must be kept at 32°C or lower. • Greyhounds must be transported in air-conditioned vehicles or trailers if at any point of the journey the maximum temperature is forecast to be 32°C or higher.

Note: Hot Weather affected journeys may NOT always coincide with a hot weather affected race meeting. For complete details go to:

News By Lynton Hogan President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.

Activism. It’s a word that us greyhound racing enthusiasts distrust. We associate it with those who want to end greyhound racing. In greyhound terms, it raises the hackles. But it need not. Activism is direct action in pursuit of a cause. Participants and stakeholders can be activists in support of greyhound racing and can counter and weaken the words and actions, often irrational and ill-informed, of those who rail against a sport that employs thousands and brings hundreds of millions of dollars into the economy. In The Art of War, the Chinese strategist and philosopher Sun Tzu said:

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperilled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperilled in every single battle. Know yourself: Greyhound participants need to know the key benefits of the sport to each of themselves as individuals, to the wider participant group and to the community generally. Participants need to know facts such as that Victorian greyhound racing supports close to 3,000 full time equivalent positions in Victoria alone and that there are more than 15,000 people who are directly involved in the Victorian greyhound racing industry as an employee, volunteer or participant (IER Pty Ltd, Size and Scope of the Victorian Greyhound Racing Industry, March 2017 – see http:// www.grv.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/GRV_VGRI.pdf ). You should know, for example, that in 2017, the World Anti-Doping Agency, across Olympic and non-Olympic sports, reported adverse or atypical findings in 1.48% of samples tested1 – in Victorian greyhound racing the equivalent figure in 2017/18 (GRV Annual

Know your opponents: This is difficult. It can be infuriating. Attempt to understand what arguments – however misleading – might be used against greyhound racing, what action our opponents might take and what areas of criticism we can attack simply by being better on. Look at websites such as the ‘Coalition for Protection of Greyhounds’ and their publications. Read their analysis of the 2018 campaign to end greyhound racing in Florida, USA. Know that opponents spent $3.3m and those in favour of racing $142,000. That opponents try to use such things as ‘doping statistics’ (but see above), injury rates and ‘undercover scenes from inside racing kennels’ to advance their goals. Act. Armed with that knowledge, what then can you do at an individual and then wider level? First, recognise that what you and those around you do every single day as a participant is important: participate while promoting your greyhounds’ welfare in every respect: any compromise may come at a very heavy cost. Second, if you see an anti-racing campaign, be ready to counter it with facts, forcefully but without unnecessary aggression: if you see a web campaign urging people to contact politicians or media, with a link to them, take five minutes to do it yourself too expressing your support for greyhound racing. Third, do the little things: if you hear a person say something negative about greyhound racing, disagree and say what it does for you, for your family or for your community. Point them to the IER report referred to above. Fourth, and finally, join GOTBA Vic. We can and do take direct action advocating for the greyhound racing industry and its participants, particularly with politicians. GOTBA Vic will also become more active in advocating for the wider industry in 2019.

The Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of member and their greyhounds. winning six of his first seven races. He came in second in the Group 2 Warragul Cup final on 12 January, after nipping on the heels of seasoned racer and eventual winner, Dyna Hunter, and Rocky is happy with how Jebrynah is coming along. “He’s improving,” he said. “He’s still a young dog. I don’t believe they reach their full potential until they’re two and a half. He’s only 23 months old so he’s got plenty of improving to do. “I expect big things from him. We’ll see how he holds up and if he gets any injuries. I hope he stays sound, and we’ll take it as it comes. I can’t say he’s going to win the Melbourne Cup or anything – I hope he does, but if the time comes and he’s good enough that’s what we aim for.”

Rocky’s return By Renee Mok and Gerard Guthrie

The veteran Pakenham trainer had retired from greyhound racing and was travelling Australia with his wife when he got a call from the owner telling him about a promising dog he has.

Jebrynah, a February 2017 son of Cosmic Rumble and Jebrynah Glory, opened his career in auspicious fashion

“I don’t believe they reach their full potential until they’re two and a half. He’s only 23 months old so he’s got plenty of improving to do.” Rocky is having a hard time getting away from greyhound racing, but he seems happy to continue training as it brings his family together. “I brought the family together by having this dog. We go to the races together and we talk about the dog and we have a really good time,” he said.

“We were tossing it up because my wife wanted to keep travelling,” Rocky said. “You can’t go away at all when you have dogs; but our grandkids love the dogs too; the whole family gets involved, so we took Jebrynah on and here we are,” Crisafi said.

Since returning to the sport, Rocky has been asked to train Jebrynah’s sister, Jebrynah Helios, who is also doing quite well; and he recently added superstar greyhound Neo Cleo and her brother Black Neo to his kennels. Rocky is targeting this month’s Cranbourne Cup with Neo Cleo.

Going above and beyond for inseparable golden oldies

R

ose Streatfeild is the GAP Volunteer and Foster Coordinator for GRV’s Greyhound Welfare and Rehoming Department, and she is known to go above and beyond the call of duty to help these beautiful dogs find homes.

Zeta’s received a birthday cake on her 14th birthday.

When GAP received a call from an owner who could no longer home his elderly greyhounds, Rose was the one who welcomed Tommy (11) and Zeta (14) into her Mooroolbark home back in October. She saw that they were senior dogs who wouldn’t be comfortable in a kennel environment, and she felt compelled to foster the inseparable golden oldies. “It’s been pretty fun having them around,” Rose said. “They are really opposite in their personalities. Tommy is bubbly and likes going up to people. Zeta is more reserved being the old girl that she is. Considering it was a huge move for them, they’ve handled it quite well and it’s good to see them evolve and come out of their shells.” In addition to her work at GRV, Rose has been fostering greyhounds on and off since 2010. “It’s quite unusual to have dogs for so long,” she said regarding Tommy and Zeta. “Foster care is usually three to four weeks, but even in three weeks, you see a lot of changes in greyhounds. It’s why foster caring is so great. They all have different characteristics and different things to show you – the fun part is getting to see their personalities.” Tommy and Zeta are a delightful pair who have lived together for many years and are now looking for a quiet home to spend the rest of their days. GAP was aiming to adopt the duo into the same house during the recent Seymour Adoption Weekend. While the event was a big success and a record number of greyhounds found homes, sadly Tommy and Zeta were some of the few remaining at the end of the event. Since they weren’t adopted, Rose continues to provide foster care for these lovely dogs and GAP has put out a special request to its community to help these two find a home. GAP have received a couple of promising offers and have their fingers crossed that Tommy and Zeta will be in a new home soon.

Tommy has found life pretty comfortable in foster care at Rose’s home.

Three Magpie greats to take centre stage By Phil Weir

I

n the state of Victoria one thing is certain; AFL is never out of season. Even the hottest summer months can’t stem the flow of constant predictions, theories and prognostications about who’s the team to beat, whose hammie will be a problem or where that coach should be playing what’s-his-name…

Racing Club on February 16, when three of biggest Magpies – Dane Swan, Steele Sidebottom and Dayne Beams – will be live on stage for the Footy Funatics dinner show. According to Ballarat GRC Manager Brett Jones, Ballarat is a huge footy town. “Some of the great names of football started their careers in Ballarat and the locals just can’t get enough. It’s not just Collingwood supporters either; everyone’s keen to hear experts so they can gear-up for the season.”

“These three players are all-Australian, Copeland trophy winners and premiership players. Throw in a Brownlow to Dane; you don’t get much more expertise than that on one stage.” There’s more on the night than just football though – the race card includes the $15,000 Lil’ Dickie Oaks and $20,000 Western District Derby, attracting some top dogs on the track. First race is set for 5.30pm.

If the 2019 season is on your mind, the opportunity to hear directly from some the game’s great players – about a month away from the first bounce of the season – will be tempting at least.

The dinner kicks off at 6.30pm with the 90-minute show from 7.00pm. Tickets are $95, or $125 for the ultimate VIP experience, including meeting the players, a photo opportunity and front row seats.

Fitting tribute for the late Pamela Burns By Andrew Copley

F

riends and family farewelled greyhound racing pioneer Pamela Burns at the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club on 23 January.

Pam obtained her trainers license in the 1970s, making her one of the industry’s first ever female greyhound trainers.

“Mum would not have wanted us to make a fuss but we felt that this was a fitting tribute as she had such a passion for the greyhound industry I am sure she would have had a cheeky smile and been a little upset at all the fuss at the same time,” Kelly laughed.

Based in Koo Wee Rup, Pam and husband Terry were regulars at the Cranbourne track, where they raced and trialled their greyhounds on a weekly basis for many years.

Making the night more special was the fact that Terry produced the winners of Races 10 and 11 – Buckle Up Spud ($7.60) and Kel Knight ($4.50) respectively.

Daughter Kelly, being in the funeral industry, had the honour of being able to take Pam on a farewell lap of the track in a hearse

“To get a double on the night was so nice for our family. It was very fitting,” Kelly said.

Career learnings standing novice trainer in good stead By Renee Mok and Andrew Copley

N

ewcomer Jeff Geall says his challenging career in the workforce has played a pivotal role in his early success as a greyhound trainer.

Jeff’s greyhound Max Tractor won the Join The 525 Club Now Maiden Final (525m) at The Meadows on 19 January, making it two from two to start his career. Jeff works full-time as a disability carer and following his first feature race success he told RSN’s Off The Leash program that working with people who have disabilities has been a great experience which has influenced the way he trains his greyhounds. “I work with people with complex behaviours. It has taught me so much about humanity, treating people with dignity, having empathy for people who have a disability, and I genuinely care… even with greyhounds, we just treat them with respect. They are a beautiful animal. They are greyhounds, they have their issues, as we all know. We try to create a peaceful environment here at our property and I know (my brother) Dave does the same on a bigger scale.”

Since then, David Geall has become one of the top trainers in Victoria. After a break from greyhounds, Jeff recently returned to the sport to help his brother and is now training dogs of his

“Dave has shown me the ropes and has been an amazing mentor,” Jeff said. “I have the best of both worlds – backyard hobby experience and working with Dave,” he said. Jeff said he’s impressed by the changes to greyhound racing since he last worked in the industry.

“I work with people with complex behaviours. It has taught me so much about humanity, and I genuinely care… even with greyhounds, we just treat them with respect. They are a beautiful animal.” “I would say it’s in a good place – just the whole welfare and integrity – GRV has done an amazing job to where it is today. To have Tier 3 racing, that was unheard of in the early days… It’s just amazing where the sport is at the moment… it’s come a long way,” he said. Looking ahead, Jeff is setting Max Tractor, a greyhound owned by his wife Marie, for the Group 2 Launching Pad series (515m) at Sandown Park in April. To hear the full interview listen to the 23 January podcast of Off The Leash (go to 11:53) at grv.org.au/podcasts.

20i9 launching pad

FEBRUARY 2019

Jeff was introduced to greyhound racing a long time ago. He recalls his dad training a greyhound when he was a boy and working at the old Geelong track in Corio with his brother David in the 1970s prior to the opening of Beckley Park.

Jeff lives in the town of Fyansford and regards himself as a ‘hobby trainer.’ He has two greyhounds, Zipping Eleanor and Max Tractor, in his backyard and then works at his brother’s kennels in Lara, which is 15 minutes away.

Racing Integrity Commissioner, Sal Perna.

Racing Integrity Commissioner to embark on revamped roadshow

D

uring February and March 2019, Victoria’s Racing Integrity Commissioner, Sal Perna, will be conducting his annual roadshows in regional and metropolitan locations throughout Victoria.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

In 2019, the roadshow sessions will be in the form of a ‘Q&A’ approach, in a less formal presentation format used in previous years and will be conducted at race clubs on race days. This new approach is in response to feedback received from previous roadshow attendees.

22

The sessions are aimed at building on those undertaken in the previous seven years to create a greater understanding and awareness of the role and responsibilities of the Commissioner, the work the office has undertaken and an overview of what is in place to ensure that the Victorian Racing Industry operates free from the influence of crime and corruption. The Commissioner’s attendance will provide anyone attending the race meeting an opportunity to raise questions and hear first-hand of the Commissioner’s perspectives on integrity in the racing industry. Those interested in submitting questions in advance to any of the sessions are kindly asked to send their questions to email rsvp@racingintegrity.vic.gov.au prior to the session. Please note: Times may be subject to change. Please check your local club or go to racingintegrity.vic.gov.au for details closer to the relevant date.

Horsham greyhounds support The Horsham Greyhound Racing Club is partnering with national charity Livin, a not-for-profit organisation which raises mental health and suicide prevention awareness through education programs. The club is donating $100 to Livin whenever a race is won by a local trainer during the first nine weeks of 2019. The fundraiser will culminate at the Horsham Cup on Saturday, 9 March, with a cheque presentation to Livin on the night.

Murtoa sprinter Shield Of Dreams (Bruce Baxter) defeats kennelmate Digger’s Cove (Heather Baxter) at Horsham on Australia Day, earning $100 for Livin. A total of $900 was raised during January despite losing two meetings to heat.

“This is a great opportunity for the club to give back to the local community and support those in need. The club has a huge number of local trainers and we are looking to be able to make a significant donation to Livin on Cup night,” said the Club’s Manager, Justin Brilliant.

There will be many opportunities for local trainers to win with more than 100 races during the nine weeks with the club aiming to raise between $3000 – $5000.

“The Horsham Greyhound Racing Club is looking forward to seeing local trainers winning and the club making donations to the charity on their behalf,” he said.

The donations will be going directly back to the local Wimmera area with Livin using the funds to present its LIVINwell educational program.

Testing Dates Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: •

have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at:

greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently. Pre-entry Assessment Booking Number:

From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine.

FEBRUARY 2019

*NEW GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS

The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

Handsome hero Dave departs Feb 2013 – Jan 2019 By Renn Barker

F

or many years, visitors to the Seymour head office of Victoria’s Greyhound Adoption Program were greeted by a very handsome fawn greyhound called Dave who saw himself as very much in charge of the program. Dave came to GAP as an eight-week-old puppy when it was discovered he would never have a racing career because of a significant heart murmur. Instead Dave, through sheer personality and good looks, developed a new job as GAP’s four-footed Ambassador. He regularly attended Adoption Days and the GAP stand at the Royal Melbourne Show, featured in calendars, Christmas cards and education and training posters and videos and had a large following on social media. Dave’s gentle confidence and lovely manners also meant he often took prospective greyhound owners for walks as an ideal introduction to the breed. When not busy promoting greyhounds as pets, Dave would chill with Alice, the GAP office cat and Gonzo The Great, a little scruffy terrier, and he was always there for members of the GAP team when they needed a hug after a long day. Sadly, Dave was diagnosed last month with a massive tumour that was beyond treatment and he spent his last day at Seymour on 27 January, surrounded by his GAP family. GAP’s Head behaviourist, Diana Rayment, spoke for the entire team when she said “I've never met another dog as gentle and kind

Dave was a much-loved ambassador for greyhounds as pets.

as Dave and I think it's going to be a long time until I meet one that comes close. He really was just a sweet angel soul that made everyone happy”. Friends and fans of Dave can pay their respects and share their memories at www.facebook.com/ GreyhoundAdoptionProgramVIC

DID YOU KNOW?

GRV has set up a Racing Injury Working Party (RIWP) to review all catastrophic and major injuries on greyhound tracks in Victoria, with the purpose of observing trends and providing safety improvements at GRV Clubs and private facilities. All Greyhound Recovery Initiative cases, including take-ups and denials, are reviewed by the RIWP.

Welfare Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare Workshop attendees are encouraged to bring a greyhound with them to assist with practical learnings.

With a focus on practical application, the workshops will assist participants in identifying, preventing and treating injuries or illnesses that can impact on a greyhound’s ability to get to the race track and successfully race. The workshops will begin by establishing a baseline healthy greyhound, before identifying both the physical and behavioural changes that can be indicative an illness or injury.

Injury and Illness Workshops RV now has confirmed dates for the second series of half-day practical workshops covering Injury Identification and First Aid in partnership with Dr Chris Boemo. They are free of charge and will be delivered from approximately 10.00am to 3.00pm with lunch provided (subject to change). Participants will be provided with some useful resources to take away. Numbers are limited to 15 people per workshop, and will be held at the following locations:

Following this, some key principles of preventative health will be discussed. This will include topics such as the impact of feeding regimens, vaccinations, and exercise of the racing greyhound. The final topic will assist participants with the examination and treatment of their greyhounds, with a focus on areas such as bandaging techniques for soft tissue injury and fracture support, exercise rehabilitation techniques and the overall management of injuries. Given the practical nature of the workshops, participants will be encouraged to bring their own greyhounds. Participants interested in attending should contact Greyhound Welfare and Rehoming on 8329 1118 or https://www.trybooking.com/book/ search?keyword=greyhound.

Racing Report By Vaughn Lynch General Manager, Racing

Traralgon Update

The updated schedule as per 1 March 2019 will be as follows:

With the Traralgon track currently closed GRV is working closely with the Traralgon GRC to identify the causes of the current issues and to ensure the safest possible track is constructed. Commencing on 1 March 2019, Healesville GA and Cranbourne GRC will race on alternate Mondays with the meeting type to be level 3. Warragul GRC and Sale GRC will race on alternate Friday nights with this meeting a Full Stakes Provincial meeting. This alternating schedule will continue until the reopening of the Traralgon GRC. All GRV Vic Bred series that were scheduled for Traralgon GRC have been rescheduled to alternate Gippsland tracks.

2 x Metropolitan Meetings

10 x Full Stake Provincial Meetings

2 x Hybrid Meetings consisting of 6 Full Stake Provincial Races and 6 Level 3 races (250+ Ranking events)

1 x Healesville Half Stake Provincial Meeting

6 x Level 3 Meetings graded utilising APM (beginning with an upper limit of APM of $2,000)

Racing Population

2 x Level 3 Meetings graded utilising APM although will be selected from the BOTTOM UP.

GRV’s Racing Department has been exploring methods of utilising the racing population including encouragement for owners and trainers to introduce new greyhounds into the racing population. It has been become evident that the current calendar (make-up and split of meetings) does not adequately align to the racing population. The affect has been greyhounds not entering the racing population or exiting quickly due to lack of competitiveness. The details of this have been shared with industry consultative groups over recent months. In order to address the matter the following changes are to be implemented from 1 March 2019 for a trial period until 30 June 2019: In totality the program will switch two Full Stakes Provincial Meetings into Level 3 meetings. This will be achieved by allocating the Saturday twilight meeting as a level 3 meeting (for a non-feature event meetings) and also conducting hybrid meetings at Horsham and Warrnambool where six races at each meeting will be for greyhounds ranked 250+ (subject to nominations received).

2 x Metropolitan Meetings

13 x Full Stake Provincial Meetings

1 x Healesville Half Stake Provincial Meeting

7 x Level 3 Meetings (Tier 3, APM or Limited Rankings Meeting)

NOMINATION CLOSING TIMES

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

The current schedule is as follows:

Close Day Monday

Close Day Tuesday

KEY MFS = Metro Full Stakes Meeting (Level 1) PFS = Provincial Full Stakes Meeting (Level 2)

Close Day Wednesday

Close Day Thursday

PHS = Provincial Half Stakes Meeting (Level 3) Close Day Friday

The benefits of the updated schedule are as follows: •

Provides a racing program more closely aligned to the current racing population. Currently the median of the population has a ranking point level of 250 points or an APM value of $2,000.

These limits will assist fields for the Full Stakes Provincial meetings to race against similarly rated opposition.

The meetings selected from the BOTTOM UP will be popular with the lowest level of the racing population as connections will be confident of competing against similarly rated opposition.

GRV’s Racing Department would also like to flag the possibility of reducing the number of meetings conducted during the remainder of 2019 if the decline of the active greyhound population continues. Currently the racing program requires 2,200 greyhounds racing once a week to be totally full. Depending on the utilisation rates during the upcoming period a critical point may be reached where it is more effective to reduce meetings. The Racing Department will be visiting tracks across the state during February to deliver the above key messages to participants and clubs.
