Greyhound Monthly Victoria (GMV) magazine is produced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), the governing body of greyhound racing in this state. GRV strongly encourages all Victorian greyhound racing participants - in particular breeders and trainers - to take the time to read each issue of GMV to ensure they are across relevant key issues. Each edition of GMV aims to provide an overview of key happenings in relation to Victorian greyhound racing that occurred during the previous month, as well as promoting significant and relevant upcoming activities and events. If you receive Greyhound Monthly Victoria via post but only read it on-line, GRV asks that you please consider the environment and notify us via email (tmaagma@grv.org. au) requesting to be removed from our mailing list. You can also request to have GMV emailed to you via the same email address.

TALKING GREYHOUNDS with

Simone Fisher

Tune in Saturday mornings from 6am, only on RSN Racing & Sport 927AM. Hear them all at grv.org.au/podcasts

CEO’s Update February was another busy month for Victorian greyhound racing with the Australian Cup Carnival featuring some great racing action, including a champion performance by Australia’s best stayer, Tornado Tears, in the Group 1 Zoom Top, a solid win by rising star, Deliver, in the Group 1 Rookie Rebel and a run by Barooga Brett in the Temlee that’s positioned him as dual Group 1 winner. And the Gippsland Carnival wrapped up with a great performance by Orson Allen to win the Cranbourne Cup. There are a lot of very good greyhounds racing in Victoria at the moment and to help punters and participants make the most of this, GRV has released the Watchdog mobile form guide with a range of features that you can read about in this issue of the Monthly. New features will be added in the coming months and I ask you to spread the word about this new app, which puts everything punters need to know in their hand, and can be downloaded from the iTunes and Google Apps stores. As you are aware, the Victorian Government’s new Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds will commence on 1 January 2020. GRV is developing a Support Book to help participants manage their compliance with the new Code across areas such as facility construction and management, breeding, health and welfare, emergency management and retirement, and you can find out more in this issue . The Support Book will be released in monthly sections, starting in March. It will include explanations and examples, templates for recording compliance protocols and links to useful reference materials.

Looking ahead, Sandown will be hosting a Greyhound Community Day on 23 March. These events are very popular both for people who already own greyhounds and for those thinking about adopting one and I encourage you to spread the word about the Sandown Community Day. And there’s more great racing action coming up over March, including the Horsham Cup on 9 March. Before then, of course, we will see the finals of the Australian Cup Carnival at The Meadows on 2 March, one of the great events on the greyhound racing calendar worldwide. The Meadows always puts on a great show for the Australian Cup and it’s a great way to introduce friends to all the colour and excitement of greyhound racing. I hope to see you there.

Speaking of greyhound welfare, this issue has a story on how the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club responded to a bushfire in the Gippsland region last month. The club acted quickly and effectively to support affected participants, much like the Sale GRC handled a similar fire situation earlier this summer. These are great examples of how Victorian greyhound racing is not just a sport but a community too and I thank everyone involved for their work. Speaking of which, one of the most loved and respected members of the GAP community, Don Graham, passed away earlier this month and you can read more about him in this issue. I want to personally acknowledge Don for nearly twenty years of volunteering at GAP and fostering many greyhounds on the way to their forever homes.

MARCH 2019

I’d also like to remind participants that GRV’s new Penalty Guidelines for Prohibited Substances are now in force, following a public consultation process last November and you can find them at greyhoundcare. grv.org.au/policies-and-guidance. They cover the range of penalties that GRV may seek when making submissions to the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board (RADB) about the use of prohibited substances. It is important to note that such offences will continue to

be treated on an individual basis and factors such as prior offences, remorse, cooperation and action already taken to address problems, will be considered. However, when making submissions on this or any other issues to the RADB, GRV will always be acting in its primary role as a regulator with a statutory responsibility to protect the sport’s integrity and the welfare of greyhounds.

Tornado Tears (8) won the Zoom Top by less than half a length over reserve Blue Moon Rising (9).

In a superb training performance by champion mentor Robert Britton, Tornado Tears dug deep to win the invitationonly Zoom Top first-up after five months on the sidelines. The son of the great Fernando Bale and Tears Siam, a litter sister to Britton’s 2015 Zoom Top hero Space Star, hadn’t been seen in action since 22 September, when he won the Group 3 Top Cat Video Cup at the same venue. “He has just got me in awe,” said Robert Britton. “Tornado Tears does things that dogs just shouldn’t be able to do.” It was the fourth time Britton had won the Zoom Top in the last six years, having previously won the event with Cheetah Zorro (2014), Space Star (2015) and last year with Fanta Bale, enhancing the Lara mentor’s reputation as greyhound racing’s Bart Cummings. Despite his lack of racing fitness and a less than ideal draw in eight, Tornado Tears started $2.20 favourite in the $75,000 to-the-winner Zoom Top, ahead of NSW visitor Poco Dorado ($4.30) and his Group 1-winning kennelmate Barcali ($7.70). Tornado Tears began well from his outside alley but wasn’t able to cross outsider Black Impala ($28.30) and Poco Dorado.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

After momentarily being caught wide, Tornado Tears found the fence with a lap to go and the writing looked to be on the wall when he moved into second in the back straight.

But as Tornado Tears sweated on a rails run, reserve Blue Moon Rising ($10.80), a litter brother and kennelmate to Poco Dorado, swept to the front; however the favourite wouldn’t be denied and kicked back strongly along the inside in a stirring finish to score by .36 of a length in 42.51sec. Another interstater in Western Australian Moment To Jive ($21.10) ran third. “I was just hoping he would lead to give himself a chance but to come from behind and win this race proves how big

his heart is,” said a proud Britton. “We didn’t know how strong he would be heading into the Zoom Top after such a long lay-off. I feel that everyone has a lot more confidence in him that I did. “He has had a faultless preparation after his hairline fracture in his hock five months ago. Even though he hasn’t been over 700 in his comeback, he was showing all the signs he was more than okay. “Greyhounds like this just don’t come around often. He is a dog that knows how to find the line and that is exactly what he did tonight.” Tornado Tears has now won 20 of his 29 starts, his last seven in a row, and he’s undefeated in three assignments over 725m at The Meadows, while it was his fourth victory at Group 1 level, following on from the Sandown Cup, Albion Park Gold Cup and National Distance Championship.

Barooga Brett secures Group 1 double By Gerard Guthrie and Molly Haines

B

arooga Brett claimed his second Group 1 trophy for 2019 at The Meadows when outpointing the best sprinters in the land in the Temlee (525m) on February. Owned and trained by Brooke Ennis, Barooga Brett won the Group 1 Silver Chief at The Meadows on 5 January, made the final of the Group 1 Maturity there last July and had won seven from 11 over the 525m course prior to the invitationonly Temlee. But despite his imposing credentials at The Meadows, Barooga Brett, a son of Barcia Bale and Destini Gold, started at $7.50 from an awkward box six draw in the $100,000 tothe-winner Australian Cup lead-up. After winning the Group 2 Cranbourne Cup one week earlier, Orson Allen started $2.40 favourite from box two, with Poke The Bear, runner-up at Cranbourne and winner of the Topgun, The Meadows’ other Group 1 invitational, the $3.30 second elect from box five.

Barooga Brett came out running and duelled for the lead with Orson Allen going into the first turn. Barooga Brett gained the ascendancy soon after and he refused to surrender his hard-won advantage, increasing his lead in the home straight as he defeated Orson Allen by 2.77 lengths in a flying 29.65sec, eclipsing his previous

“Brett is continually improving and to have won a Group 1 race in the Silver Chief here and to do it again in an invitational is an exceptional effort.” It was Barooga Brett’s 17th win at start 48, with his resume also featuring the Group 3 Cup Night Sprint at Sandown on Melbourne Cup night. Hasten Slowly notched up another minor placing in a major at The Meadows, running third, with My Redeemer and Poke The Bear finishing fourth and fifth respectively. There was an emotional note to the victory, with Barooga Brett previously owned by the late Norma Gost, who passed away last November. Brooke and husband Jamie Ennis forged a successful association with Norma and partner Jim Psaila several years ago through the deeds of star stayer Lady Toy. “We still share our wins with Jim,” Brooke said. “Losing someone is always extremely sad but ‘Bretty’ is making this a very special time and we are sure Norma continues to watch down on him and be very proud.” It was the second time Brooke and Jamie have won the Temlee, with superstar My Bro Fabio victorious in 2015. Barooga Brett powers to the finish line over Orson Allen (2) and Hasten Slowly (5).

“I am still in shock and my heart is racing and I think it will be for a while,” Brooke Ennis said after the race. “He got a great cart into the race but to be able to run 4.98sec was a huge surprise for me. I knew he was in a good position sitting behind Orson Allen and he did everyone very proud.

MARCH 2019

Melbourne Cup hero My Redeemer was at $6.60, while underlining the depth of the field, Hasten Slowly, runner-up in both the Australian Cup and Topgun at the venue in 2018, was a $23.60 outsider.

R

ising star Deliver continued the perfect start to his middle distance career with a dominant all-the-way victory in the Group 1 Rookie Rebel (600m) at The Meadows on 16 February, the opening night of the Australian Cup Carnival. Trained by Seona Thompson, Deliver won the Group 1 Vic Peters Classic in Sydney over 520m last November and the son of Fernando Bale and Veetee Saharrah has made a seamless and ultra-impressive transition to the middle distance ranks in the early weeks of 2019. After two wins over Sandown’s 595m course, highlighted by the Listed Maidment Memorial, Deliver tuned up for the $75,000 to-the-winner Rookie Rebel with a scorching 34.09sec victory at his 600m debut at The Meadows. ($5.10), Benali ($6) and reserve Blue Striker ($6.50). The market proved to be spot on as Deliver came out running and found the front and he was never seriously threatened in a flawless front-running exhibition, defeating Blackjack Neo ($23.80) by 2.46 lengths in another flying gallop of 34.19sec, with Blue Striker finishing third. “Deliver is a very honest greyhound and to win one Group 1 race, let alone two and a Group Listed, is a great effort,” said co-trainer Jason Thompson, husband of Seona. “We thought he would run the 600m eventually but not this quickly. We thought he would be racing the middle distance when he was around two and a half to three years old. We threw him in a 600 at Sandown and he broke 34 (seconds), so we knew the distance wouldn’t be a problem after that.” Bred and owned by Pearcedale’s Vince Tullio, Deliver made it 13 wins from 24 starts. reyhound racing made a return to the heart of Melbourne on 25 February with an exciting new initiative - the TAB Australian Cup Box Draw held at Zinc in Federation Square by the iconic Yarra River. The Monday lunch was a glitzy event attended by the who’s who of greyhound racing, including trainers of each of the dogs in the Australian Cup field, Victorian State MP for Broadmeadows, Frank McGuire and revered Melbourne Storm Rugby League coach, Craig Bellamy. While the day centred around the big names of the greyhound racing world, the crowd was spellbound when

Widely regarded as one of the best coaches of any sport in Australia, Bellamy spoke candidly about the challenges that come with leading one of the most successful football sides of the modern era, while also dealing with the challenges that come with heading up a Rugby League team in a traditional AFL town. Adding another new dimension to this year’s Australian Cup is the pairing of eight local charities to a runner in the Australian Cup. The group matched with the winning dog is set to receive a $10,000 donation, while $2000 will be donated to the remaining seven charities.

reyhound racing’s third annual Gippsland Carnival reached new heights in 2018/19 with record crowds flocking to take in the thrills of our sport.

The latest series consisted of three country cups beginning with the Sale Cup on Boxing Day, followed by the Warragul Cup in January before rounding out with the Cranbourne Cup in February. A spectacular launch in December brought the carnival to life with cricket legend Ian Botham and Victorian greyhound racing ambassador Brent Harvey in attendance. Attendance figures were up by 8,500 on last year’s carnival despite the cancellation of the Traralgon Cup on Australia Day due to track safety issues, which are currently being rectified. GRV CEO Alan Clayton said the carnival had grown from strength to strength in its three years.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

With the return of the Traralgon Cup next year, the 2019/20 Gippsland Carnival is expected to be bigger and better again. 2018/19 GIPPSLAND CARNIVAL CUP WINNERS G1 Sale Cup – 26 Dec Neo Cleo (Wendy Neocleous) G2 Warragul Cup – 12 Jan Dyna Hunter (Steve Collins) G2 Traralgon Cup – 26 Jan (did not run) G2 Cranbourne Cup – 9 Feb Orson Allen (Correy Grenfell)

“Gippsland is a traditionally rich area for greyhound racing and you can see that shine through in this carnival,” Mr Clayton said. “To see Sale, Warragul and Cranbourne filled with families enjoying our great sport is just wonderful, and we are proud to see the benefits it brings to local businesses and communities.” WHY IT’S IMPORTANT The local Gippsland economy has had its challenges in recent years, not helped by the closure of the power station in Hazelwood in March 2017 which reportedly employed 495 staff and 300 contractors just a few years earlier. The Gippsland Carnival engages the services local businesses and sources local produce, which generates much needed funds for the region. CELEBS INVOLVED

English cricket icon Ian Botham joined AFL games record holder Brent Harvey as the faces of the Gippsland Carnival Media Launch in December, while larger-of-life AFL personalities Max Gawn, Dane Swan and Matthew Richardson made appearances throughout the carnival along with stand-up comedians Marty Fields and Dave O’Neil. LIFEBLOOD OF OUR SPORT Because of its soft ground, the Gippsland district is recognised as a great breeding ground for greyhound pups, and with three tracks in the region plus Cranbourne on the outskirts, it has long been a greyhound racing stronghold.

O

rson Allen celebrated the biggest win of his career on 9 February, adding a deserved country cup triumph to his resume with a brilliant all-the-way victory in the Group 2 Spolly’s Syndication Cranbourne Cup Final (520m). Trained by 25-year-old Correy Grenfell, Orson Allen was making his fourth appearance in a provincial Cup, having previously contested finals at Geelong (2nd), Bendigo (4th) and Warragul (6th). Orson Allen’s previous feature titles had both come at Sandown in the Group 3 Shootout (515m) and Listed Australian Sprint (515m). “This is what we train for; to get the rewards like this,” Grenfell said. “We’ve been desperate to get an inside box with him,” said Grenfell. “He’s been in plenty of Group races now and he probably should have won a few more than this. He’s got the ability. A son of US sire KC And All and Group winner Desalle Bale, Orson Allen was the fastest qualifier for the $47,000 to-thewinner Cranbourne Cup after a near-record 29.61sec heat

victory, just .01 outside Pop The Cork’s 520m benchmark. Drawn in box three, Orson Allen was the $3.20 second elect, behind Seona Thompson’s $1.70 favourite Poke The Bear (box 2), with Poke The Bear’s kennelmate Azkaban ($9.10) the only other runner at single figures. Orson Allen came out running and Grenfell’s pre-race confidence was vindicated in breathtaking style as he opened up a race-winning lead in the back straight, going on to defeat Poke The Bear by 4.13 lengths in another scorching run of 29.77sec. Looking further into the future, Grenfell is optimistic about Orson Allen’s stud credentials. “There’s been a few people after the race already ask for straws,” quipped Grenfell. “He’s by KC And All and Desalle (Bale) on the dam side. She was Barcia Bale’s sister and she was a star in her own right, so I don’t think you can go past his breeding.” Earlier on Cranbourne Cup night, the heavily-backed Boom Down (Steve White) careered away with the $10,000 tothe-winner Ram’s Security Victoria Cup over 699m.

Syndication: Future Growth Strategy Workshop

S

• Discuss the needs and requirements of syndicators going forward (ideas for future growth of syndication)

As well as recent changes made to GRV’s rules of racing making it easier to register larger syndicates, GRV is continuing work to support the growth of syndication activities in the sport of greyhound racing.

• Provide an opportunity for syndicators to meet and network

yndication provides a wonderful avenue for participation in greyhound racing for a broad range of people, increases revenue for participants and also supports positive greyhound welfare and rehoming outcomes.

• Provide an opportunity to clarify existing GRV and ASIC compliance obligations and ask questions

GRV vs ASIC Requirements Promoters of public syndicates which qualify as managed investment schemes are regulated under the Corporations Act 2001. These requirements are regulated and monitored by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), not by GRV.

In particular, GRV is working on seeking broader relief for the sport from Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) requirements – similar to relief arrangements proposed by ASIC in early 2015 and which already exist for the sports of thoroughbred and harness racing.

The ASIC requirements were not written with greyhound racing in mind, but sometimes they do cover the sport – particularly where shares are being sold to members of the public. If you are only selling greyhound racing syndicate shares to people you know and are not actively promoting or advertising those shares, you do not need to register with ASIC.

To help build a case for ASIC relief, GRV is preparing a report on the future growth of syndication in the sport. To help prepare the report GRV will be running a workshop to seek the views of current syndicators and those people wanting to know more about syndication.

Offering or selling shares includes many types of activity, including taking out advertising in newspapers, on television or radio, posting messages on social media, putting up flyers around the club, or sending out text messages to groups of people who might be interested in buying shares. All these activities could be seen by ASIC as ‘promoting’ and you may trigger the need for ASIC registration.

Horsham hooks fishing contestants By Phil Weir

orsham in March is magnificent. Big sky country. Broad fields, the majestic Grampians, fishing the Wimmera River; and the CHS Group Horsham Greyhound Cup!

Thousands of visitors descend on the Wimmera’s capital for the long weekend, and many of them spend Saturday night at the newly-refurbished Horsham track to see some of the best dogs in Australia race for the $67,000 group two final. The Horsham track has had an interesting few years. Concerns over racing safety led to closure and extensive remodelling of the track and facilities, resulting in what is now one of the safest tracks in Victoria; in fact in the 2017/18 racing season Horsham had the least amount of injuries per 1000 starts of all Victorian tracks.

and tradespeople. At the opening in August 2017 the $1.2 million investment materialised, including racing over 410m and 485m, the track widened by an average of 1.2m, cambers at the bends increased to 10%, replacement of the lure and safety rail, Burrumbeet track sand replaced, and all irrigation and electrical systems upgraded. The Group two Horsham Cup on Saturday March 9 is renowned throughout the Wimmera as a highlight of the social calendar. Horsham GRC Manager Justin Brilliant said “it’s a huge weekend in Horsham. We get thousands of visitors mixing with the locals.”

“Racing safety is of vital importance to GRV, and to that end we found the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) had the expertise to advise us about how to avoid potential areas of interference and crowding on the track.”

In addition to the Cup heats and final, feature races on the card are the Sylvia Penny Memorial, Jan Wilson Memorial, CHS Group Cup Consolation and the presentation of the Horsham Greyhound Racing Club Greyhound of the Year.

“Everything about the track was measured and analysed; we’ve applied science to the welfare of the dogs.”

For a Gold coin entry - as part of the Clubs fundraising for the ‘Livin Well’ Educational Programs - you’ll enjoy café dining and entertainment for all ages kicking off from 6pm, with the first race at 7pm.

The track closed in October 2016 so that the $1.2 million upgrades could be applied, using predominantly local suppliers

MARCH 2019

GRV Racing General Manager Vaughn Lynch explained there was unprecedented science behind the new track.

“The famous Horsham Fishing Competition runs the day after, so the crowd on the river put their rods down for a few hours and let their hair down at the dogs before the serious fishing business starts.”

Trialling the key to Group 1 double

by Molly Haines

A

steely determination and commitment to go the extra mile paid huge dividends for Victorian trainer Jeff Britton when he landed a Group 1 double in Sydney on 2 February. Britton went into the heats of the age-restricted National Derby (520m) and National Futurity (520m) at Wentworth Park with four chances; one in the Derby and three in the Futurity. Remarkably, all four won, which Britton credits to trialling them at Wentworth Park beforehand. “I was tired of getting beaten at Wentworth Park with dogs I

knew had the ability (to win), so I made sure every dog we took up for the heats had a look at the track. The extra travel we did to trial leading into the series was worth it in the end,” Britton said. The Futurity Final went the way of Circle Of Dreams (Barcia Bale – Mepunga Mia), a greyhound bred in Victoria by Barry Smith and owned by the Champagne Syndicate. She made it two group wins in her first 11 starts after also capturing the Group 2 Laurels (515m) at Sandown Park in a race record 29.35sec in December. Despite Circle Of Dreams having an almost instant rise to stardom, Britton is refusing to get caught up in the hype. Her early promise has seen her compared to retired champion female sprinters Striker Light and Up Hill Jill, who had a combined 147 starts for 68 wins, 50 minor placings and more than $1.5 million dollars in prize money. “Circle Of Dreams has the early speed and the ability to run a good 500 metres, but she is only at the start of her career. There is no way you can compare her to what Up Hill Jill and Striker Light were able to do in their careers. They are two of the best female sprinters we have seen,” Britton said. Axel Footluce (Kinloch Brae – Footluce Diva), bred in SA by Melissa Trowbridge and owned by the Trowbridge Trowbridge Syndicate, won the Derby, with both races carrying a $75,000 first prize.

Don a GAP great By Renee Mok

I

t is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Don Graham, a highly respected GAP volunteer, who passed away on Sunday 17 February.

Don and his wife Jenny began adopting greyhounds in 2001 and became heavily involved with the Greyhound Adoption Program. They were dedicated, long-time volunteers who fostered many greyhounds and attended countless GAP events, including the Royal Melbourne Show and GAP Adoption Days. The couple became a staple of the program and their tireless volunteer work helped a lot of greyhounds find homes. Don and Jenny are renowned for having many greyhounds at a time in their Carrum Downs home and for their genuine desire to help retired greyhounds become pets. Over the years, they have truly become a part of the GAP family and their outstanding contribution received well-deserved

recognition in 2013 when they received the Chairman’s Award at the Greyhound Industry Awards Night. Don was a softly-spoken man with a real passion for the breed. We will remember him as a greyhound whisperer, who was happy to share his knowledge and experience with others. At events, he would often start friendly conversations with prospective adopters and introduce them to one of his many greyhounds. Described by GAP staff as a compassionate man who ‘loved the hounds’, Don didn’t just talk the talk, he walked the walk. Don and Jenny have done so much for individual dogs and the breed as a whole. Don was an incredible man and his kindness and generosity shone through when he was with his dogs. He will be missed by many including all those in the GAP community whose lives he has touched. News By Lynton Hogan President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.

Over the course of the summer GOTBA Vic received a number of queries from members relating to issues relevant to owners, breeders and trainers, particularly racing issues. We have received queries or requests for assistance from members regarding disciplinary matters. On the racing matters, we have raised them and continue to follow them up with GRV both within and outside GRV’s racing and other committee processes and, where relevant, also raise them with clubs, directly. Some of the racing matters we have been progressing with GRV recently include testing elements of GRV’s scratching compensation policy and the appropriateness and conduct of prekennelling racetrack swabbing procedures. In connection with recently announced GRV racing calendar changes, we queried – and received satisfactory responses from GRV in respect of – prizemoney re-allocations within that calendar. On the disciplinary matters, we assisted the relevant participants directly.

On wider industry issues, we will continue to press – hard where necessary – for the interests of participants. Much of that work is to be seen elsewhere, and the fruits of it are in the medium to long term. We will keep you updated.

In March 2019, GOTBA Vic will release a short participant survey via Survey Monkey with the main focus being on your costs of participation. We suspect that a lot of work that greyhound participants do on a daily, weekly, monthly basis is not properly valued or costed, even by participants themselves. We anticipate the survey will take 10 -15 minutes to complete and will assist us in a significant way in considering and advocating matters relevant to you in 2019 and beyond. We expect to supplement this survey in 2019 with further work on the true costs of keeping and/or owning a racing greyhound, possibly using independent research. I encourage you to respond to our survey in due course. Things to think about in the meantime include (not necessarily survey questions): what is your food bill now and what was it in 2017? How long does it actually take you every day to prepare your greyhounds (time it a couple of times to check)? How much time a week do you spend on individual tasks such as cleaning kennels / transporting greyhounds / handling puppies / other tasks per week (time those too)? GOTBA Vic is committed to being an open, transparent organisation for its members, one that enhances and projects the voices and interests of greyhound racing participants at every level for the benefit of all of them. We best do that by hearing from you and from your active membership with us.

The Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of member and their greyhounds. Enriching the Lives of GAP Greyhounds

Enrichment volunteers build hide treats in snuffle mats.

By Renee Mok

D

id you know that the Greyhound Adoption Program has a team of Enrichment Volunteers?

Greyhound Enrichment Volunteers have the important job of cuddling with greyhounds at GAP – in addition to other socialisation activities of course. Recently, GAP has added making enrichment toys for the greyhounds to their list of duties and these volunteers are having a ball! The Greyhound Enrichment Program takes place at GAP’s headquarters in Seymour where Enrichment Volunteers provide vital socialisation and enrichment activities for greyhounds housed at the kennels while they wait to be adopted.

The enrichment program is always looking for passionate volunteers who are committed to animal welfare and would like to help greyhounds become pets. It is also a great opportunity for people considering adopting a greyhound to become familiar with the breed. Enrichment Volunteers will receive training and resources before they volunteer at the kennels. The position is flexible, and volunteers can sign up whenever they are available for half or full days from Wednesday to Sunday in Seymour. To learn more about becoming an Enrichment Volunteer, visit www.gap.grv.au/volunteering

MARCH 2019

The Enrichment Volunteers may also work with GAP’s Greyhound Behavioural Assessors on specific training activities. Recently, the Behaviourist Team introduced a new activity for these volunteers to participate in – making snuffle mats and other enrichment toys for the greyhounds to play with.

A basket of enrichment toys made by volunteers.

“Enrichment toys are good for a greyhound’s mental and physical stimulation while they’re in a kennel,” explained Greyhound Behavioural Assessor, Carly McDougall. “These activities contribute to the greyhound’s overall wellbeing, which means the greyhounds are happier and more content.” The volunteers spend time making enrichment toys for the greyhounds and then distribute them to the dogs in the kennels. They supervise the greyhounds enjoying their new enrichment activities and when the dogs have found all their treats, the volunteers help collect the toys and clean up the mess.

Under the supervision of GAP staff, volunteers complete tasks including washing, grooming, and exercising the dogs and other socialisation activities. These activities enrich the lives of the greyhounds at the kennels and support their transition to life as a pet.

Enrichment toys keep the greyhounds occupied while they’re in the kennels or when they have to rest following a visit to the vet. These toys have spaces to hide dog treats and encourage the greyhounds to use their physical and mental capabilities to sniff

out and find their treats. The toys may be cardboard boxes and newspapers that the dog can rip in to; snuffle mats made from fabric that they can sniff through; or trays of treats for them to lick up.

Enrichment toys such as this are great for a greyhound’s mental stimulation.

Crimson Vixen defeats Time To Talk (5) and She’s For Us (1) in the Lil Dickie Oaks.

Crimson Vixen off to flying start By Renn Barker

W

arrnambool-based Norm McCullagh has trained many great racers over the past few decades, including the legendary Bold Trease, but he still enjoys it when a talented new dog comes along like Crimson Vixen.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

The McCullagh-trained greyhound won the Lil Dickie Oaks at Ballarat on 16 February, beating a very strong field which included young stars Time To Talk and Black Opium. She ran the slick time of 25.00 seconds over 450 metres and paid $13.20 for the win. The race, which is for young female greyhounds and is named after long time Ballarat Club volunteer, the late Lil Dickie, boasts a $15,000 first prize.

16

“I was very pleased with her run and that it was the Lil Dickie Oaks. I knew Lil well over the years and she was a lovely woman, always ready with a coffee and chat after a busy day at the track. I think she would have been pretty happy with Crimson Vixen’s win too,” Norm said.

Sired by Barca Bale out of Weeping Lass, the two year fawn greyhound has only been racing since last November but has already racked up four wins from eight starts and Norm reckons she’s got a bright future. “I bought her and her sister, Delta Rhode, from breeder Gary Peach, when they were about four months old, and I could see they had a bit of potential even then. She’s very quick at the start and very calm and collected out there on the track. While it’s hard to compare any dog to Bold Trease, she’s a good strong racer like he was,” Norm said.

Norm said he is enjoying the reactions of Crimson Vixen’s owners - a Timboon-based syndicate called Mingo’s Mates to her excellent form. “They’re a group of young men involved with the local footy team and Crimson Vixen is the first greyhound they’ve owned. They are really happy with how she’s going and hopefully I’ll be doing a bit more celebrating with them over the next few years.

In like Flynn By Phil Weir

T

he Western Districts Derby at Ballarat on 16 February was a major event for trainer Harry Manolitsis and his 27-month-old dog Flynn.

The $20,000 first prize, a win over classy youngsters Whiskey Riot and Jebrynah, saw Flynn pay $5.80 and a seriously inspiring late run to record 24.95sec over the 450m; all in all, it’s an impressive night’s work. Flynn chalked up his sixth win from just eight career starts in the Derby; a race specifically for young male greyhounds. He has also laid claim to the 425m track record at Bendigo, at 23.37sec. Harry rates Flynn very highly. “I’ve seen some great dogs in my time, and I reckon Flynn is going to be one of them. He’s a lovely dog, but shows a strong will on the track, as we saw in the Derby in Ballarat.” “He’s now at six wins; so the question is, to hang on to him until Launching Pad at Sandown in early April or let him race sooner. He’ll be bursting at the seams to get on the track.”

in Devon Meadows, while he arranges his own kennels. “Karen’s a terrific operator and has been a great help,” he said.

The Launching Pad is a series run over 515m open to greyhounds with a maximum of six wins.

Harry also has two other impressive athletes in his team; the 2018 Group 1 Sapphire Crown winner Elevated, and Italian Plastic, whom he describes as “a good, handy dog”.

Harry recently made a comeback to training after a break and is currently co-working with Karen Leek at her property

“I’m grateful to have three dogs who are doing well and can’t wait to see what Flynn can do in the future.”

“We wanted to do something a bit different and bring some new people to the club, which is exactly what happened. We had 150 people there and most of them would not have been here before,” Verbene said. With the Ballarat region known as a rich breeding ground for both football and greyhound racing, it was an obvious fit to host the three Magpie premiership heroes.

And there was some extensive knowledge of the sport among the panel. Swan has been a regular fixture at greyhound racing over summer, attending the Cranbourne and Warragul Cups while Sidebottom has owned several racing greyhounds.

Premiership Magpies swoop into Ballarat By Phil Weir

T

hree modern day greats of the Collingwood Football Club held court at Ballarat recently.

Dane Swan, Dayne Beams and Steele Sidebottom were on hand for a sportsman’s night in February, with a packed crowd in raptures. Jane Verbene from the Ballarat club said the night was planned to introduce greyhound racing to a whole new crowd.

Verbene said while the night was a huge success, they would look at doing it differently in the future, with a greater diversity of clubs represented. “Most of the people who came along were Collingwood fans but we had a few that weren’t. A lot just came to see Dane Swan, there’s a real fascination with him as we’ve seen at a few greyhound racing clubs over the past couple of months.”

Carrie Bickmore charity joins the Chase By Phil Weir

A

n ambitious fundraising objective has been set for the third year of the ‘Chase for Charity’ on Radio SEN in 2019 – top the $100,000 mark or pay up!

The challenge was immediately accepted.

John ‘Dr. Turf’ Rothfield will be playing for a new charity this year; Carrie Bickmore’s Beanies for Brain Cancer; aka ‘CB4BC’. More than $11 million has been raised by the Gold Logie winner’s charity, formed after the death of her husband from brain cancer in 2010. You can hear the Chase for Charity on SEN and regional radio stations in Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton, Colac, Gippsland, Horsham and Warrnambool every Saturday morning until the end of the footy season.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

The concept of Chase for Charity is to challenge the hosts of SEN’s Off the Bench – broadcast every Saturday morning from 9am until noon – to place bets on greyhound races; with all winnings going to their allocated charities. Each presenter has $500 to play with every week, and will this year choose their runners from list of group races from around Australia.

Liam Pickering is with Victorian Men’s Shed Association which, in just ten years, has grown to represent more than 320 men’s sheds in the state, advocating for the men and women who use the venues for fellowship and community service.

MARCH 2019

GRV Deputy Chair Peita Duncan threw down the gauntlet when she spoke with Craig Hutchison and Liam Pickering to launch Chase for Charity on 16 February. “We’ve raised more than $76,000 in the past two years, and if we fall short of $100,000 this year, I think you guys should chip in the shortfall.”

Hutchy is again donating to Ronald McDonald House Charities, which now operates 19 ‘homes away from home’ for families of seriously ill children being treated at nearby hospitals.

“GRV said ‘yes do it and we’ll do whatever it takes to support you’ so we started getting the message out through social media, SMS and word of mouth that the club’s 100 kennels were there for any participants that needed them,” Steve said.

Local club offers bushfire support By Renn Barker

N

ow Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club’s track may be currently closed for a major upgrade but that didn’t stop its kennels filling with 70 greyhounds as the club opened its doors to local participants during the recent bushfires around Tanjil and Walhalla. Traralgon Club manager, Steve Clarke, said when it became clear that there was a major fire danger for the region, he contacted GRV to say he was going to make the club’s kennels available for trainers and breeders with properties that could be at risk.

On Friday 1 February the properties of three local trainers were getting hit hard by the fires with paddocks burning and ash and other debris seriously affecting their water supplies. Between them, they brought 70 greyhounds into the Traralgon Club’s kennels which remained fully operational and staffed despite the track closure. One of the trainers, Tanjil resident Kate Gorman, said moving her 49 dogs into the club’s kennels for the weekend was quite an effort. “Everyone at Traralgon Club did a fantastic job, especially their Administrative Officer, Olivia Alcock. Our accommodation at a hotel across the road was all paid for and they shouted us pizzas once we’d got the dogs settled,” Kate said. Steve added: “It was a real challenge handling such a sudden influx of greyhounds over several days and nights, but the club staff did tremendous work, GRV was right behind us with communications and financial support and most importantly, all the dogs were kept safe and secure and are now happily back at their homes.”

STAY UPTODATE

Current information about the Hot Weather & Transport Policies available online • The internal temperature of a vehicle or trailer transporting greyhounds must be kept at 32°C or lower. • Greyhounds must be transported in air-conditioned vehicles or trailers if at any point of the journey the maximum temperature is forecast to be 32°C or higher.

Note: Hot Weather affected journeys may NOT always coincide with a hot weather affected race meeting. For complete details go to:

Are you fire ready?

The Country Fire Association (CFA) have great online resources to ensure you are ready this fire season. GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

Steps you should consider taking to be prepared: 1. Visit https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au 2. Contact your local Fire Brigade so they are familiar with you and are aware how many animals you have in case there is a need to evacuate in the future. 3. Attend a CFA run Fire Preparation Meeting to discuss what a fire can do in our local area, how best to prepare and what you can do in the case of a fire.

Maria Duffin with Warragul GRC Manager Adrian Scott (left) and long-serving committee member, Alf Baker.

wheels have to be kept in motion; well-oiled and all going the same direction. Such is the case at Warragul GRC, where Maria Duffin has been efficiently and effectively running the office – and kicking goals – for 20 years. “I had no experience with greyhounds before, but my first role was doing the stewards reports in the kennels, so it didn’t take long to learn. After that I would occasionally fill in, in the office, before I was offered this job full-time.”

Maria’s milestone By Renee Mok

B

ehind every great organisation is someone who has the ability to pull things together – quietly and efficiently – and just make stuff work. Greyhound Clubs are just like that. The

Warragul is a busy club. There are race meetings at least twice a week – more than one hundred a year - plus trials and functions, so there’s some juggling to be done. “I get to assist (Warragul GRC Manager) Adrian Scott and regional Marketing Manager Bernadette Dillon in the day-to-day operations. We also have a great function venue here which is interesting to be involved with; for all sorts of different things, from weddings to meetings. It’s just a great job.”

Adrian said Maria has been a wonderful employee for the club. “Her attention to detail around race day operations and rostering of staff is second to none. She provides great support to my role and is pretty quick to remind me that whenever we have a hiccup it’s because I interfered!” “Over the years Maria has seen a lot of people come and go, from Club Managers, Presidents and committee people and lots of changes at the venue. Warragul - like a number of clubs - is lucky to have dedicated fulltime employees who have remained loyal to the industry, something we should all be grateful for.” Maria’s not planning on retirement just yet. “I’m really happy here. It’s been great to see the progress over 20 years, not only here in Warragul but for the sport generally. That’s what keeps me going,” she said.

Illegal Vet medicines not worth the risk or the money

22

S

topping and deterring the import of unregistered overseas veterinary products by Australia’s racing industries is just one of the jobs that keeps compliance officers at the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) busy on a daily basis. Lisa Croft, APVMA Deputy Chief Executive Officer, said that greyhound owners and trainers using products not scientifically assessed or registered by the APVMA were risking their dogs’ health and performance and their money. “Any veterinary chemical product that provides a therapeutic benefit or is injected into an animal must be registered by the APVMA before it can be legally manufactured, imported, sold, advertised or purchased in Australia,” Lisa said. “Any human-use medicine or compounded product given to an animal must also be APVMA registered, unless it has been prescribed by a vet.” Lisa explains how hundreds of illegal veterinary products bought from United States-based websites have been seized at the Australian border in the past few years. “Through our partnership with Australian Border Force we have intercepted and destroyed tens of thousands of dollars of illegal and unsafe injectable medicines destined for use in racing dogs,” Lisa said.

‘If there isn't an APVMA or NRA registration number on the label, then the product is not registered.’ “Importers could have saved themselves the financial loss had they first checked whether the product was legal to import into Australia. Last year we became aware of a pharmacy in NSW supplying an unregistered injectable muscle treatment drug without a vet prescription to greyhound trainers nationwide,” Lisa said. “Fortunately, the pharmacy responded quickly to our communications and voluntarily changed its practices to comply with agvet laws. We appreciate the importance of accessing

the latest medicines on the market to keeping racing dogs in top condition and there are numerous products in our public database of registered chemicals that will do the job safely, and as claimed. Veterinary chemicals that come through the APVMA’s regulatory assessment have gone through the proper checks and balances to ensure product safety and effectiveness.” Report suspicious and unregistered products to the APVMA at compliance@apvma.gov.au or phone 1300 700 315. Reports are treated confidentially and help ensure unsafe or ineffective products do not continue to be available in Australia. Visit the APVMA website to learn more about choosing safe and effective vet medicines at apvma.gov.au Simple actions to buy a safe and effective vet product: • Flip the pack and check the back for the APVMA/NRA approval number • Drop the product or chemical active name into the APVMA’s chemical database to confirm registration at https://portal. apvma.gov.au/pubcris • Always use products as directed on the label • A vet cannot prescribe a particular product name unless it is APVMA registered • Human-use medicines and compounded products can only be used to treat an animal if prescribed by a vet. For genuine compounding, the vet must provide the ingredient, dose rate and form to the compounding pharmacist • If you’re unsure, speak to your vet or call the APVMA on 1300 700 315.

Testing Dates Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: •

have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at:

greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently. Pre-entry Assessment Booking Number:

From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine.

MARCH 2019

*NEW GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS

The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

that GAP adopted more than 1,300 greyhounds into the homes of Victorian families in the 2017 financial year? That’s an average of more than three per day!

GRV asks participants to be aware that session dates and times are subject to change in hot weather. The GRV Hot Weather Policy is now being applied to GAP Pre-Entry Assessment dates. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

Welfare Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare

I

f you have a greyhound that dies in your kennels for any reason, you must notify GRV within two working days of the death and prior to the disposal of the body. Please ring Racing Services and advise them what you are ringing about so the death can be accurately recorded. Heat stress January 2019 was the hottest month on record in Victoria. Greyhounds being kept in kennels during extremely hot days are at risk of overheating and suffering heat stroke, which can lead to organ failure and even death. As well as closely and regularly monitoring your greyhounds for any signs of heat related stress, it is very important that on extremely hot days you take steps to protect those (especially pups) that are outside in yards. Merely ensuring water bowls are full is not enough; greyhounds in outdoor yards should ideally be brought inside, but if this is not possible, they must be provided with adequate shade and a method for cooling themselves such as sprinklers, regular hosing or paddling pools. Even brushing dogs to remove remaining winter coats will assist them to keep cool.

Signs of heat stroke include excessive panting, drooling, salivating, agitation, restlessness, very red or pale gums, bright red tongue, increased heart rate, breathing distress, vomiting and/or diarrhoea (possibly with blood), little or no urine production, signs of mental confusion, dizziness, staggering, lethargy, weakness, muscle tremors, seizures, collapse and unconsciousness. If you suspect your greyhound is showing any of these signs of heatstroke you will need to act quickly. Remove your greyhound from the hot environment immediately. Apply or spray cool water onto the greyhound’s coat and skin. Then apply a fan or fanning of the skin to maximise water evaporation and heat loss. Do NOT use ice-cold water or ice as this may worsen the problem. Then take your greyhound to the nearest veterinarian immediately. Heatstroke is an emergency – always see a veterinarian. Even if your greyhound looks like they may be recovering, they should still always be checked by a veterinarian.

The following measures should be taken on extremely hot days:

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

• If you have the facilities, bring your greyhounds inside where there is air-conditioning and/or cooling fans to keep them cool; • Do not exercise your greyhounds or undertake any training activities in extreme heat. On any hot day, aim to undertake exercise and training activities in the early morning before it becomes hot. This will help to prevent dehydration or burning of foot pads on hot surfaces. • Make sure your greyhounds have access to plenty of shade and clean, fresh, water. Set down more than one water bowl, just in case one is accidentally knocked over. Place a paddling pool or large tub filled with water in their kennel or yard to allow them to cool themselves. Do NOT place paddling pools or tubs of water in direct sunlight as the water can get very hot quickly. • Greyhounds should be monitored at least once every hour for any signs of heat stress.

The GAP Café allows the suburban and metropolitan population

Snake bites With the recent hot weather, GRV has received increased reports of snake bites in Victoria. Please ensure that you are vigilant when it comes to protecting your greyhounds from the risk of snake bites at this time. Action you can take to reduce the risk of snakes includes keeping grass cut low, and keeping your property clear of piles of rubbish and other objects where snakes may hide (e.g. wood piles). If you think your greyhound has been bitten by a snake, keep them as calm and quiet as possible and take them to a veterinarian immediately. The chance of recovery is much greater if treated early. If your veterinarian is some distance away, you can apply a firm bandage over and around the bite site to apply pressure and help slow the venom spreading to the heart. Do NOT wash the wound or apply a tourniquet. If you can identify the snake, tell your veterinarian what type of snake it is but please do NOT try to catch or kill it.

meet a greyhound and allow them to consider the breed as a ‘city pet’ option. The venue has attracted local and international publicity as the first of its kind. GRV is seeking an operator who will manage the dayto-day operations of the café, provide the food, beverage and any additional staff; and provide a friendly atmosphere for customers of the café and those seeking information about greyhound adoption. For more information contact Phil Weir, Manager Strategic Planning & Projects; 8329 1100, or by email at pweir@grv.org.au.

Inactive Greyhound Follow-up During February some greyhound owners received emails and registered letters asking them to notify GRV of the activity status and location of one or more of their greyhounds that are deemed to be ‘inactive’ on FastTrack. Inactive means the greyhounds:

their greyhound’s details on FastTrack or complete the form on the reverse side of the letter and return it to GRV. GRV regularly follows up inactive greyhounds. The purpose of any follow-up is to determine the status of the greyhound and update FastTrack accordingly. Previous follow-ups have involved welfare staff phoning owners, but it was decided to trial the registered letter, as in the past it has been difficult to contact some owners by phone.

• are of racing age; and • are recorded on FastTrack as either not retired or recorded as ‘retired for breeding’ (but are not currently registered to breed); and • have had no activity on FastTrack for six months or more.

GRV is using this process while FastTrack is being upgraded to enable owners to enter an activity and location for any greyhound of any age. More information will follow on these developments.

Owners are required under racing rules to inform GRV of various activities relating to their greyhounds, including transfer of ownership, retirement (as a pet), euthanasia or death. Inactive greyhounds are either a result of GRV not being aware of one of these activities having occurred, an incomplete transfer of ownership or the greyhound is ‘spelling’ (e.g. awaiting breeding or recovering from injury). GRV requires all owners who received a letter to update

It is recommended that you regularly check all your greyhounds on your ‘MyDogs’ list in FastTrack to check for greyhounds that should have been retired or ownership transferred. If you need assistance, please contact GRV.

Injury and Illness Workshops GRV now has confirmed dates for the second series of halfday practical workshops covering Injury Identification and First Aid in partnership with Dr Chris Boemo. They are free of charge and will be delivered from approximately 10.00am to 3.00pm with lunch provided (subject to change). Participants will be provided with some useful resources to take away. Numbers are limited to 15 people per workshop, and will be held at the following locations: Horsham Thursday, 7 March 2019 Friday, 15 March 2019

Ballarat

Sandown Tuesday, 19 March 2019 Healesville

Thursday, 21 March 2019

With a focus on practical application, the workshops will assist participants in identifying, preventing and treating injuries or illnesses that can impact on a greyhound’s ability to get to the race track and successfully race.

The workshops will begin by establishing a baseline healthy greyhound, before identifying both the physical and behavioural changes that can be indicative an illness or injury. Following this, some key principles of preventative health will be discussed. This will include topics such as the impact of feeding regimens, vaccinations, and exercise on the racing greyhound. The final topic will assist participants with the examination and treatment of their greyhounds, with a focus on areas such as bandaging techniques for soft tissue injury and fracture support, and exercise rehabilitation techniques and the overall management of injuries. Given the practical nature of the workshops, participants will be encouraged to bring their own greyhounds. Participants interested in attending should contact Greyhound Welfare and Rehoming on 8329 1118 or https://www.trybooking.com/book/ search?keyword=greyhound

Due to the current decline in the population of racing greyhounds, changes have been made to the Victorian Racing schedule to better align with the current racing population’s needs. Updated Victorian Racing Schedule: - 2 x Metropolitan Meetings held at Sandown and The Meadows (same)

What are we doing for the lowest level greyhounds? - The meetings selected from the BOTTOM UP are expected to be popular with the lowest level of the racing population, as connections will be confident of competing against similarly rated opposition.

- 10 x Full Stake Provincial Meetings (-3 Meetings) - 2 x Hybrid Meetings consisting of 6 Full Stake Provincial Races and 6 Level 3 races (250+ Ranking events) held at Warrnambool and Horsham. (new)

- BOTTOM UP meetings have been developed to encourage owners and trainers to persist with greyhounds that would otherwise retire or not commence a racing career and increase the utilisation rate of Victorian bred greyhounds.

- 1 x Half Stake Provincial Meeting held at Healesville on Sunday (same) - 2 x Level 3 Meetings graded utilising APM although will be selected from the BOTTOM UP. (new)

What trainers should be aware of when nominating for the updated racing schedule:

- 6 x Level 3 Meetings graded utilising Aged Prizemoney (APM) (APM limit of $2,000) (condensed)

- Metropolitan and Provincial field selection and order or entry remains the same.

GRV Chief Grader Andrew Mills spoke to George Farrugia and Molly Haines on RSN’s Off The Leash about changes and how it will affect greyhounds that are potentially seen as being upgraded.

- The APM value of each greyhound is listed on the form page on FastTrack. - How a greyhounds APM value is calculated can be found on page 3 of the GRV Grading Guidelines.

“Current Level 2 meetings are light in numbers, and so the adjustment will help balance the numbers to improve field composition and greyhounds can continue to race against ‘like-for-like’ where possible,” Mills said.

- GRV encourage trainers with greyhounds that have an APM value below $2,000 to nominate for Level 3 meetings. - Maiden greyhounds must have three race starts before being able to be drawn into a BOTTOM UP meeting (note Maidens with less than 3 starts will be manually excluded at the time of grading).

It is important to note that the total number of meetings (23) and races programmed along with total prize money remains unchanged.

Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news

Expected benefits of the updated schedule:

26

- APM Meetings will be non-penalty for winning greyhounds that are Grade 5 or higher when conducted at Level 3 Meetings

- Provides a racing program more closely aligned to the current racing population. Currently the median of the population has a ranking point level of 250 points or an APM value of $2,000.

- Greyhounds will rely solely on their APM value to gain selection with no order of entry rights at Level 3 meetings.

- Assists fields for the Full Stakes Provincial meetings to race against similarly rated opposition.

- The APM limit of $2,000 will be modified depending on the demand at certain tracks.

Reallocation of prize money Please be advised that all upcoming GRV Vic Bred Maiden series events from 5th March on wards will now pay $100 prize money for unplaced greyhounds (in both Heats and Finals) until the end of the current racing season (30th June 2019).

Please also be advised that the following events have been added to the Racing Calendar, with first prize of $5,280 to the winner of each Final (Metro Grade 5 Prize money).

On-Track Veterinary Examinations By Dr Steven Karamatic

28

In response to feedback from participants, a change was recently made to the automated email generated by FastTrack whenever a greyhound undergoes a veterinary examination by an on-track veterinarian on race day. The email includes more detail of the examination and is sent to both the owner and the trainer of the greyhound whenever a veterinary assessment incident is created in FastTrack.

The emails replicate most of the information listed on the Veterinary Examination Details Form that is provided to the handler, including confirmation of any injury, stand-down period, treatment provided or veterinary advice. The standard email will also clarify some rules and link to further educational material that will continue to develop over time.

Penalty Guidelines for Prohibited Substances

VETERAN RACE

FEMALE RACE

on/after 1 January 2015: any

By Ian Haberfield

GRV’s new Penalty Guidelines for Prohibited Substances are now in force, following a public consultation process last November. The Guidelines cover the range of penalties that may be sought by GRV when making submissions to the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board (for breaches of national and state rules that deal with prohibited and permanently banned substances).

It is important to note that such offences will continue to be treated on an individual basis and aggravating and mitigating factors, such as prior offences, remorse, cooperation and action already taken to address problems, will be considered. The new Guidelines are available at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ policies-and-guidance
