GRV strongly encourages all Victorian greyhound racing participants - in particular breeders and trainers - to take the time to read each issue of GMV to ensure they are across relevant key issues. Each edition of GMV aims to provide an overview of key happenings in relation to Victorian greyhound racing that occurred during the previous month, as well as promoting significant and relevant upcoming activities and events. If you receive Greyhound Monthly Victoria via post but only read it on-line, GRV asks that you please consider the environment and notify us via email (tmaagma@grv.org. au) requesting to be removed from our mailing list. You can also request to have GMV emailed to you via the same email address. CEO’s Update In the May edition of the Monthly, we salute the retirement of two great racers, Poke The Bear and Jesaulenko, with a look back at their career highlights, and cover the Horsham Cup, won this year in fine style by superstar Orson Allen. And there’s a story on the National Adoption Day, held this year on Sunday 28 April with The Meadows hosting the Victorian leg. Instigated by GRV’s GAP, the National Adoption Day is now in its second year and not only finds homes for hundreds of greyhounds but also helps generally boost the profile of the breed as great pets. I’d like to acknowledge here the contribution of The Meadows, volunteers, and GRV and GAP staff for making it a great day for 71 beautiful Victorian dogs and the lucky families who adopted them.
Looking ahead, another reminder that the 2019 Coursing season is now underway. I’ve often said that coursing is Victoria’s 14th greyhound racing club and it’s growing again in popularity among trainers. And it’s a great introduction to the sport at a real grassroots level for both new participants and fans. You can find out more about upcoming coursing meets at: ncavictoria.com/2201. And going from the grassroots to the sand, we have the Warrnambool Cup happening on 1 May followed by Australia’s richest race for stayers, the Sandown Cup on Friday 24 May and I hope to see you there.

On the subject of grading and race programming I’d like to thank those committed trainers who approached me to have an important discussion about aged prize money and Tier 3 racing. Our roundtable meeting was very constructive and GRV was very amenable to introducing some changes to address the concerns raised by the trainers. I’d also like to remind you that GRV is releasing another chapter of its Code Support Book this month to help participants transition to compliance with the new Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds, which commences on 1 January 2020. The May release covers Code requirements for preparing dogs for retirement and re-homing, breeding and greyhound emergency welfare issues and protocols. You can download it and other support materials at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/code-of-practice or call our Code Support Line on 1300 144 360 for more information and advice.

Also covered in this issue is the Metro Spring Carnival, a new racing initiative that brings together some of the biggest events in the Victorian greyhound racing calendar. It will also incorporate races for greyhounds of all grades, so more people and greyhounds will be involved in what will be Victorian greyhound racing’s richest carnival. Speaking of staying up to date with all the racing news, you will probably all be aware of GRV’s Watchdog app, which was released in February. While it was developed very much as a form guide, more and more participants and GRV staff including myself are finding it also provides much of the data available on FastTrack but in a much more user-friendly way for smartphones and tablets. While it can’t be used for nominations and some other FastTrack functions, it’s a fast and very convenient way to look up results, form, pedigree and other details for the thousands of greyhounds racing in Victoria. And more features will be added soon that will boost The Watchdog both as a form guide and as a great reference tool even if you’re not wagering. If you haven’t tried it yet, you can download the Watchdog app from
the iTunes and Google app stores or access it online for smartphones at: watchdog.grv.org.au.

Tier Three races to return in early May
T
ier Three races will again be included in the Victorian Greyhound Racing Program as from early May following a meeting held at GRV on 24 April.
Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news
Attending the meeting with GRV CEO, Alan Clayton, GM Racing, Vaughn Lynch and GRV Chief Grader, Andrew Mills were participants Lachlan Scott, Trevor Whitford, Jason Sharp, Richard Boehm and Daniel Pell. The meeting was scheduled by GRV last week, following direct contact by trainers about the changes to the racing program, in particular Aged Prize Money meetings. The changes introduced in March 2019 were designed to reverse the rapid decline in the active dog numbers. Those changes have been successful in reversing the decline. “We have listened to feedback and as an act of good faith we will be including three Tier Three race meetings into our program on a weekly basis while we take into consideration suggestions to improve the current racing schedule,” said Mr Clayton. Mr Clayton said the changes to the race program were made because of a significant reduction in the Active Greyhound Population (AGP) which resulted in less races being conducted with less runners during December 2018 through to the end of February 2019. “This in turn had a very negative impact on GRV’s overall wagering revenue which placed the projected financial result of FY2019 under pressure.

greyhounds’ changes were made to better align with the current racing populations needs,” he said. Mr Clayton added that the changes were discussed with the Racing Reference Group, the Industry Consultation Group, GOTBA, Greyhound Clubs Victoria and directly through meetings at race clubs.
"Constructive detailed conversations are informative and influential in assisting our decision making." “Having listened to what was brought to our attention, and what we have heard over the past six weeks, we are now looking at how to further enhance our changes which appear to have had unforeseen consequences. “Constructive detailed conversations are informative and influential in assisting our decision making,” he said. Mr Clayton said consideration will be given to a hybrid approach to the racing program which will see as many dogs as possible able to race within Victoria. “The Racing Department of GRV will take on board all the feedback and come back to the group, and the wider racing community, with further proposals to the program within two weeks (ending 8 May),” he said. A further review will occur at the end of June to develop a pathway forward.

RV has announced another exciting program of greyhound racing for the 2019/20 racing season highlighted by the creation of the Metro Spring Carnival. The Metro Carnival will kick off at The Meadows with the Hume Cup Final (600m) and Silver Bullet (525m) on 4 November. The second leg will feature the Group 1 invitational Topgun (525m) and Group 1 invitational Topgun Stayers (725m) at The Meadows on 9 November. The Carnival will conclude at Sandown Park with the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (515m) and Bold Trease (715m). The Metro Carnival will also incorporate races for greyhounds of all grades, allowing more people and greyhounds to be involved in Victorian greyhound racing’s richest carnival. The highly successful Gippsland Carnival will continue in 2019/20. The Traralgon Cup is currently not factored into this year’s Gippsland Carnival as they undergo track redevelopment.

Sandown’s highly entertaining match racing concept will see two Speed Star meetings scheduled for the 2019-20 racing season and will be conducted on 15 September, 2019 and 3 May, 2020. After the success of last racing season’s Nationals which was held at Sandown Park, the individual State finals will continue to be showcased on the same night across the country – 8 August, 2019 with the Grand Final being held in Western Australia. Traralgon is likely to remain closed for part of the 201920 racing season which will continue to see Warragul, Sale, Cranbourne and Healesville pick up Traralgon’s race meetings. Traralgon will be added to the racing season when a more definitive timeline is available. The importance of straight track racing continues to be high on GRV’s agenda with the introduction of 25 full stakes meetings for the Healesville Greyhound Racing Association. 1194 greyhound race meetings will run throughout Victoria in 2019-20, with more than $47 million in prize money to be distributed. Victoria’s regular racing schedule will remain at 23 race meetings per week which is made up of two metropolitan meetings, two Hybrid meetings (six races at Level two and six races at Level 3 in the same meeting), 10 Level two meetings and nine Level three meetings.

ual Speed Star winner Tornado Tears will miss the next edition of the match race series after reinjuring a pad in the Group 1 Association Cup on 20 April.
Known by his legion of fans as ‘Batman’ due to his distinctive markings, Tornado Tears is widely regarded the country’s premier stayer with four Group 1 titles and track records at Wentworth Park, Cannington and Albion Park to his name. He has also run the second fastest ever times over 595m and 715m at Sandown Park and has won the last two Speed Star events over the 595m. While the 14 day incapacitation certificate will have lapsed in time for the Speed Star – which will be run on Sunday 5 May - the Robert Britton-trained greyhound has yet to set a qualification time at Sandown Park and kennel foreman Peter Riley confirmed that while he is recovering well from his injury, he will not be ready in time to attempt to defend his title. “He’s recovering well, but he won’t be heading to the Speed Star,” Riley confirmed. “All things going well, we’re hoping to have him right for the Sandown Cup heats (16 May) but he won’t race before then.”

Planning the key to Launching Pad success By Mick Floyd
C
areful planning, brilliant speed and an ounce of good fortune landed South Australian chaser Tauwitchere the Group 2 Launching Pad (515m) at Sandown Park on Easter Thursday (18 April). After finding trouble when finishing second her semi-final, Tauwitchere created her own luck in the decider from box seven, crossing the field to lead clearly through the first turn and scoring by 7½ lengths in 29.41sec. The race went to script for Buln Buln East trainer Steve White and Tauwitchere, and capped months of planning, albeit with a bit of mixed fortune along the way.
White also claimed the Launching Pad Consolation with Sennachie, and with his third runner Red Rock finishing third in the same race, they
White praised the work that owner, breeder and former trainer Kirin Corby did with the greyhounds prior to arriving at his Paua Racing Kennels complex, and was full of admiration for the relationship she has with her greyhounds. “Kirin is so in love with her dogs and the dogs love her. On the podium tonight we couldn’t keep Tauwitchere still… she was just so happy to see Kirin. It was the same when we had Sennachie and Red Rock out earlier. She’s staying at our place for a couple of days so it’s going to be mayhem trying to settle them back down!
“On the podium tonight we couldn’t keep Tauwitchere still… she was just so happy to see Kirin.”
As the name suggests, the Launching Pad has launched the careers of some of the country’s best greyhounds. Graduates of the 2018 series include some of the biggest names in the sport including Tornado Tears, My Redeemer and Dyna Patty as well as series winner Beast Unleashed, and the 2019 series is shaping as being equally strong.

When highly fancied kennelmates Querencia and Alfieri had setbacks in the weeks leading into the series, Tauwitchere was presented an opportunity to take her place in the series and took full advantage to collect the $150,000 winners cheque.
“(The series) is a great concept for young dogs. You’ve just got to plan for it,” White said.
“But she really loves the dogs and I’m so grateful that we could achieve something with her. We ran second in the Silver Chief with Sennachie and now we’ve won the Launching Pad so it’s pretty exciting for the future.”
MAY 2019
Tauwitchere burst on to the South Australian racing scene in October 2018, winning her first five races before being sidelined with injury. Along with a number of other Kirin Corby trained pups, she was transferred to White’s Victorian kennels for a tilt at the riches in the eastern states in early 2019. The timing of her recovery fit in perfectly with the Launching Pad, being open to greyhounds with 1-6 wins. However, with just 64 tickets available for the $432,000 sweepstakes series and White only having three tickets for his five contenders, Tauwitchere was almost left on the sidelines.

esaulenko ended his wonderful 122-start career in fitting fashion, winning his last three starts, but proud owner/trainer/breeder Terri-Maree Morris knew it was time to retire her popular veteran for good after a visit to McDonald’s. Morris made the decision after Jesaulenko won what would be his second last start at Sale on March 31, where the rising six-year-old defeated Melbourne and Australian Cup runnerup Black Opium. “You’ll probably laugh at me but I made the decision after we went through the Macca’s drive-through,” Morris told RSN’s Off The Leash program. “He got his burgers and ice cream and I looked at him and he looked at me and I said ‘It’s time mate, isn’t it.’

“I have met the most amazing people in this industry. The dog is a celebrity but he’s made me special with people too. People just love him.” This is Jesaulenko’s second retirement, after Morris initially called time after his 100th start last May; however the evergreen warrior had something to say about that. “He was bored. He was going stir crazy,” Morris recalled. “I’d take the other pups to the track to trial them and every now and again I’d take Jesaulenko and he would run the best time of the day, so I put him back into work. “He just needed to do something but he won’t get a choice this time around!” The biggest win of Jesaulenko’s career came in the Group
He was runner-up at his only two appearances at Group 1 level, in the 2016 Melbourne Cup, when narrowly beaten by Ando’s Mac, and the 2017 Temlee. With his outstanding racing credentials and international bloodlines, Morris is optimistic Jesaulenko can make his mark at stud and he’s already produced a litter that she’s extremely excited about. “I saw It’s Her Fate advertised when she was about 18 months old,” Morris explained. “She was by Brett Lee out of Ritza Hattie, which won the Laurels, and I thought gee I like that breeding. I said I’ve got to buy her and put her aside for Jesaulenko when he retires. “The cross we’ve got there, with Spiral Nikita and Spiral Nikita’s sister (Minnies Surprise) in the same cross, it doesn’t get any better than that. “The College Tina line is a very strong, long dam-line and you can’t go past Go Wild Teddy (College Causeway’s sire). “There were no secrets with Jesaulenko. What you saw was what you got with him and breeders can expect a genuine, honest dog to use as a stud dog.”

Retired Bear a modern-day marvel By Gerard Guthrie
O
wner/breeder Darren Puleio admits he was devastated by the recent injury-enforced retirement of his Topgun hero Poke The Bear.
Puelio and his father Michael unearthed the greyhound they’d been waiting decades for in Poke The Bear, but their dream run with the homebred son of the great Fernando Bale and Nicki Fields came to a premature end in the heats of the Golden Easter Egg. “Everything has to come to an end but the way it happened was devastating, just for the dog,” Puleio reflected on Poke The Bear’s broken hock. I still thought he had the capacity to win another Group race. We knew what he was trialling and he was trialling better than he ever did. “He’s going alright now. He’s got his plaster off and he’s starting to put some weight on his foot slowly. He’s very happy and wagging his tail. After he was injured, I just wanted to get him home. That was all I wanted; whether he got a stud career didn’t matter. “There is a chance he could race again but realistically he’s three-and-a-half years old and if he did come back he wouldn’t be as good as he was, so we’re not interested.”
“We’re going to explore every avenue but the main aim is to let him heal,” Puleio said. “It would be like liquid gold if we could get some (semen) but if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.”
And he didn’t look back from there, collecting 37 victories from 69 starts and $501,095 in prizemoney. He celebrated a career-defining victory in the Group 1 Topgun last October, leaving the all-star invitational field in his wake as he romped to a six-length success in a scorching 29.74sec. Poke The Bear also won the Group 3 Silver Bullet and
“There was a ton of highlights but without a doubt the Topgun was the best,” Puleio offered. He showed how good he was, winning by so far against a top field. I go back to one night at The Meadows when he was last on the first corner but still got up and won and still went under 30 seconds. He ran 29.46sec at The Meadows and 29.01sec at Sandown. He was just a machine.” The Puleios’ phenomenal success with Poke The Bear’s litter extended to brothers Out Of Range, winner of the Group 1 Silver Chief, Group 1 National Derby and Group 2 McKenna Memorial, and multiple Group finalist Fully Loaded, winner of 32 races. “Out Of Range is in the process of going over to Ireland. He’ll be there in the next month or so,” Puleio revealed. “We still own him and he’ll be going to Droopys Stud, with Sean and Michael Dunphy. “They’ve been asking for a son of Fernando Bale in Ireland and the other thing in Out Of Range’s favour is that he goes back to Droopys Kewell, after we used an outcross with Nicki Fields’ grandmother (Barbie’s Shiraz). Easter double for Hallinan By Molly Haines
W
hat better way to celebrate a weekend of feature race success than a few beers at a not-so-local pub.
Breeder and part-owner Camo Hallinan wasn’t even in the country when his greyhound Zipping Bailey took out the $250,000 to-the winner Group 1 Golden Easter Egg (520m) in Sydney on 20 April. Then, less than 24 hours later, another of his greyhounds, Zipping Magda claimed one of Victoria’s richest maiden events, the Golden Rush Maiden Final (425m) at Bendigo, which carried a $10,000 first prize. “It has been an amazing weekend for my family as well as trainers Jason Mackay (Zipping Bailey) and Ricky Coleman (Zipping Magda),” said Hallinan, who is based in NSW. Hallinan was holidaying in America at the time of the feature race double. Zipping Bailey was the first to create excitement, when she
overcame box four and a very talented Golden Easter Egg field in an effort that needs to be seen to be believed. “We woke up everyone in the motel cheering when she won,” Camo admitted. “This is what you dream about and the reason you do the early mornings and long nights. It is the best feeling,” he said. Zipping Magda, a daughter of Barcia Bale and Tricky Rose, claimed the three-week Gold Rush Maiden series on 21 April. Trained in Lara by 22-year-old Ricky Coleman, Zipping Magda finished third in a Gold Rush heat before winning a semi-final and the final. “The Bendigo win really topped off an amazing weekend for everyone involved,” Camo said. “Credit to trainer Ricky Coleman,” Camo said. “Ricky and I have a great bond - we are the next generation of the sport and we both want to see it succeed.”

News By Lynton Hogan President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.
The Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds (Code) start date (1 January 2020) is coming. Whatever may be said about its content, the reality is that we as a participant body must start to adapt to its requirements where required while encouraging and advocating for sensible approaches to its administration and enforcement, and recompense for the additional costs and burdens. GOTBA Vic will continue to work with GRV and others with this in mind. As I have said before, preparation for it will take you time. The Code applies to the keeping of non-retired greyhounds, whether done on a hobby or professional basis. Some things you should think about and/or do right now if you keep non-retired greyhounds:
Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news
1. Your property (or ‘establishment’ in Code terms). What greyhound related activities will occur at your property as at 1 January 2020 and beyond? Which of the following activities will take place there: breeding, whelping, rearing, educating, pre-training, spelling, training and re-homing preparation? This will impact on exactly what needs to be in your establishment’s Establishment Health Management Plan (EHMP). 2. Your facilities (eg kennel blocks, runs etc). Record in detail the facilities you have on your property on or before 1 Jan 2020, ideally with photos and measurements. This is critical. Thanks to advocacy of GOTBA Vic, the Code contains a provision allowing continued use of pre-1 Jan 2020 facilities, even if those facilities are not otherwise compliant with Code requirements, until they are due for replacement at the end of their effective life. This applies provided no specific welfare risk is identified by GRV referable to

non-compliant facilities. It may be in a participant’s best interests after 1 January 2020 to be able to show that their facilities had been in place beforehand. 3. Read and start considering released GRV material on the Code. 4. Commence a first draft of your Establishment Health Management Plan – the protocols (or outline of things you will do or not do) on the topics or activities required by the Code. The EHMP can give you flexibility on how your establishment operates.
Costs survey GOTBA Vic has been conducting an online survey of members and participants in relation to their costs of participation in greyhound racing. Response has been excellent and we will prepare a summary of survey results both on our website and here in the near future. What is very clear to us from responses so far is that the everyday cost and burden of keeping and racing greyhounds has greatly increased, particularly in the last 2-3 years, whether it be feeding cost, administration cost, staff cost or even cost of utilities to keep a kennel. This increase has been keenly felt at all levels of participation. The results will inform our approach on a number of matters, particularly on prize money. GOTBA Vic is committed to being an open, transparent organisation for its members, one that enhances and projects the voices and interests of greyhound racing participants at every level for the benefit of all of them. We best do that by hearing from you and from your active membership with us. Join us.

Y
oung trainer Ricky Allan had his first taste of city success as his own Cranberry Miss took out the opening race on Anzac Day Eve at Sandown Park. The 32-year-old could not hide his pride when he reflected on the win. “Winning in town was the best feeling. It was more special to have my kids, partner and family there,” explained Allan. Allan works full time as a chimney
sweeper and races greyhounds a hobby. His time in the sport is relatively short compared to most participants. He decided to take up the caper after a lifelong passion for racing. “I got my first dog about four years ago. After I separated with my ex I needed something to fill in time as I love to stay busy,” the Pearcedale trainer said.
They are the only two racing greyhounds in his kennel, combined they have had 49 starts for 11 wins a further 21 placings. At home they’re better known as Cutie and Bully with the names assigned by Allan’s daughter Heidi. “I treat my dogs as part of the family, Cranberry Miss is often inside on the couch with us. I think I’m hooked for life now.”

Welfare & Re-homing Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Animal Welfare
Discounted greyhound de-sexing
T
here are many veterinary clinics in Victoria or interstate near the Victorian border, willing to provide discounts to Victorian registered participants for the de-sexing of greyhounds. Most of these clinics also offer discounts for other greyhound procedures that are done at the same time, including dentals and vaccinations. A list of these veterinary clinics, and a fact sheet explaining the benefits of de-sexing can be found at greyhoundcare. grv.org.au/rehoming/discounted-de-sexing-offered-byveterinary-clinics. It is important that you contact the clinic directly to discuss pricing and to arrange a booking. GRV is merely providing
the list of clinics and plays no role in arranging appointments and surgery or financial transactions. De-sexing your greyhound on retirement is an important step in maximising the chances of your greyhound being re-homed. GRV highly recommends that de-sexing is undertaken as soon as possible after the decision to retire has been made. De-sexing has many benefits. Behavioural benefits include a reduction in a greyhound’s tendency to be overly boisterous or show low-level aggression towards other dogs, while health benefits include a reduction in the risk of developing some reproductive diseases and cancers, and in male dogs, prostate issues.
Breeder Registration Training Updated
G
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news
RV has recently updated the Breeder Competency Pack for participants registering for the first time as breeders. Since 2008, participants registering as a Breeder for the first time, have had to complete four units of study, each with an information booklet that must be read and a six-question multiple choice test.
16
When reviewed, GRV found that much of the information required refreshing and updating as rules and industry practice have changed considerably over time. The updated competency pack is only three units and provides more targeted information for participants about choosing the right breeding pair and supporting the breeding female and her pups through the pregnancy and up to 20 weeks of age. The updated and refreshed booklets also provide breeders and whelpers with the latest knowledge about the care and socialisation of young pups up to 20 weeks of age. Getting the right start to life will help our pups achieve their goals for racing success.
GRV plans to convert the training manuals into a series of short booklets for publication on the Care and Standards website in the next few months; giving all participants access to the updated information in an easy to read format, and providing the broader community with some insight into the considered and dedicated manner in which participants undertake breeding for the sport. GRV is currently working to update the Attendant, Catcher and Trainer Competency packs in the same manner.

Inactive Greyhound Follow-up: Incomplete Transfers
F
ollowing the February inactive greyhound followup, in which greyhound owners received emails and registered letters asking them to notify GRV of the activity status and location of one or more of their greyhounds, this process was repeated in mid-April. In response to participant feedback, this time the letters were sent by normal post. The responses from owners after the February letters were greatly appreciated, allowing us to update greyhound records on FastTrack. All non-responses have been referred to GRV’s Integrity Department for follow-up. Points raised regarding notification to GRV: •
If a greyhound is retiring as a pet to another person (whether they are a registered participant or not), it must be retired as such on FastTrack; raising an ‘ownership transfer key’ on FastTrack is not the correct process because it does not retire the greyhound.
•
If a transfer key is raised for an ownership transfer, it is recommended that the greyhound does not leave your property until the transfer is complete and the greyhound no longer appears in your FastTrack account.
•
If a transfer key is raised for the transfer of a racing greyhound to a new owner who is interstate, the participant transferring the greyhound must ensure that the paperwork is finalised at the other end with the relevant interstate Controlling Body.
•
If you have attempted to transfer ownership of, or retired, one of your greyhounds, please regularly check your MyDogs tab on your FastTrack account until the transfer/retirement is complete and advise GRV if there are any issues.
If you need any help, please contact GRV.
Kennel cough preventions
N
ow is the time to vaccinate your greyhounds against Kennel Cough. While Kennel Cough vaccination is currently only mandatory for the 2nd puppy vaccination, and the naming vaccination, it is advisable to give Kennel Cough boosters every 6-12 months for life to ensure ongoing immunity. Vaccination against Kennel Cough is not always 100% effective, but it is your best protection. It significantly reduces the chances of an outbreak and reduces the severity of symptoms of affected dogs. Vaccination against Kennel Cough can be given at the same time as a C3 or as a separate vaccine, and can be given by intra-nasal, oral or injectable routes. GRV recommends for racing greyhounds (in addition to the
mandatory puppy and naming vaccinations): •
C3 vaccination every 1-3 years; and
•
Kennel Cough vaccination (ideally intra-nasal or oral) every 6-12 months, preferably in autumn.
If you want to book your greyhound into GAP you will need to check the specific GAP vaccination requirements (introduced on 1 March 2018) on the GAP page in this edition, or by contacting GRV or your veterinarian. The new greyhound Code of Practice, commencing on 1 January 2020, will make it mandatory to keep your greyhounds’ vaccinations ‘current’, and this will include an annual Kennel Cough vaccination.

All systems go following coursing triumph By Andrew Copley
n 2018 Gojek combined racing on the circle with regular visits to the coursing circuit.
I
While he didn’t manage to win the required three courses in a day to break his coursing maiden status, that all changed at the National Coursing Association’s 2019 season opener at Benalla on 14 April when he took out the MGRA Maiden Dog event. Success on the coursing circuit often correlates in a spike in form on the circle, and that was certainly the case with Gojek (May 2016 Turanza Bale – Evie’s Entity) winning his next start, in Grade 5 company at Bendigo, at the huge odds of $20.70. The slick 24.11sec victory was Gojek’s ninth win from 27 starts, and trainer Sean Lithgow provided an insight into his greyhound’s career.
Sean Lithgow: Gojek has always had good straight line speed but has got a lot stronger as he has gotten older. Instead of making the final and being run down, he showed that extra strength to back up the third time. Gojek is a confidence dog as well so win, lose or draw, the chance to race one on one and not be caught in traffic always sparks him up. He always comes back from coursing really strong, fit and confident, particularly if he gets more than one course. Q. Were you surprised by his win at Bendigo and did you back him?
SL: Early in his career I would have said coursing as he ran wide on the corners but he has got far more track sense now. He loves both so much, and he will bounce between the two over the next four months. Q. What would you say to trainers thinking about coursing who haven’t taken the step yet? SL: I think that trainers who don’t course are missing out on one of the best training tools. It gets dogs rock hard fit, builds their confidence (with minimal interference) and can really spark up dogs that may be a bit stale with continual circle track racing Q. What type of trainer and what type of greyhounds should give coursing a go? SL: Every trainer. Obviously coursing favours the smaller trainers as you need to spend considerable time and energy with each greyhound over the course of the day. (Partner) Mel and I took six dogs to Benalla and that was about the maximum two people can easily handle. I think all greyhounds would benefit from coursing but dogs that are quick in a straight line and have the strength to back up a second and third time are perfect and what we look for. We also love bringing greyhounds coursing who we are trying to build up in distance around the circle.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Q. You’ve taken Gojek coursing numerous times before he was able to win his maiden. What inspired you to keep persisting with him on the coursing circuit?
Q. Is Gojek better suited to coursing or circle racing?
MAY 2019
“I think that trainers who don’t course are missing out on one of the best training tools.”
SL: A little, although he ran the second fastest course of the day at Benalla so he was obviously feeling pretty good. I rarely bet on our own dogs but when I saw the fixed odds of $18 put up for him I did have a $20 bet on him. Those odds seemed crazy but I guess bookmakers wouldn't have taken his coursing form into account. I definitely thought he could run a place but we were so stoked when he won.

Don't wait, apply for DNA today!
G
RV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early. For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet
3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration. GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.
For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

Greyhounds and owners took a stroll along McRae Beach in memory of Don Graham.
The McRae Lighthouse had a special place in Don’s heart.
Walk for a GAP great By Lauren Marie
M
ore than 70 people and their pet greyhounds gathered at the McCrae Lighthouse on 7 April to honour Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) great, the late Don Graham. The highly respected and much-loved GAP volunteer sadly passed away on 17 February. Don and his wife Jenny began adopting greyhounds in 2001 and the walk was organised to honour his contribution and dedication to the program and to the breed itself. Everyone who met Don were in awe of his love and knowledge of the breed and it was this passion that inspired the walk in his honour. The
McCrae Lighthouse was one of Don’s favourite locations and was the meeting point on the day before an hour-long walk took place along the beach before people returned for a picnic back at the lighthouse. It was the perfect way to remember such a kind and generous man. Don and Jenny have long been dedicated volunteers who have fostered many greyhounds and volunteered at countless events including the Royal Melbourne Show and GAP Adoption Days.
community whose lives he has touched. A plaque will be placed at the GAP property in Seymour in memory of his contribution and dedication to the Greyhound Adoption Program.
The late Don Graham.
Don will be missed by many including all those in the GAP
The Warragul GRC raised funds for the Good Friday Appeal across two race meetings in April, including a $100 donation every time the greyhound wearing the red number one or pink number eight rug won.

Victoria leads the way as Australia re-homes more than 200 greyhounds in a day By Molly Haines
A
huge build-up to Australia’s second-ever National Greyhound Adoption Day has come to fruition with 71 greyhounds being adopted into Victorian homes after a wonderful day at The Meadows Racetrack on 28 April.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
Please visit grv.org.au for all the latest GRV news
All six states in Australia held an adoption event on the day, with a total of 207 greyhounds considered no longer suitable for racing finding loving new homes.
24
Victoria led the way claiming more than a third of adoptions, with our popular Greyhound Adoption Program celebrating its efforts in surpassing last year’s National Adoption Day figure of 68 across the state, and establishing a new singleday record. Emotions ran high as would-be adoptees eagerly gathered to await the day to commence, with there being many a new adoptee through to those who were looking for that “second grey” for the one they had at home.
“I would like to thank the participants for bringing the dogs to our adoption program (GAP) so we can arrange days such as these. From racing to rehoming; the entire journey is very special,” she said. A total of 75 greyhounds were available for adoption at The Meadows on the day, and the four that missed out were returned to the Greyhound Adoption Program in Seymour until they were adopted. While the overall national figure fell marginally short of last year’s total of 212, to have more than 200 greyhounds adopted into Australian homes in a single day for the second year running is nothing short of extraordinary. Ms Martin thanked her staff and those from GRV’s Greyhound Adoption Program as well as the many volunteers who made The Meadows’ event such a success.
“Adoption days such as these are simply amazing and it gives me the biggest thrill to see our greys get their forever homes,” said GRV’s General Manager, Strategic Communication and Marketing, Louise Martin. Ms Martin, the proud owner of a greyhound named Princess, said that the dogs were just the best friend ever. “They are the kindest and most intelligent of dogs. They demand and give affection and loyalty. They are the best of friends to a single person, couple or a family.” “They come to us after being on the race track (or having not quite made it) and because of how well they are treated during this time they adapt very quickly to a new way of life.”
Greyhounds and handlers gather at The Meadows prior to the event.
GAP has a low return rate because of this very philosophy.
Hundreds of would-be adopters were on the lookout for their perfect match.
Testing Dates Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: •
•
have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at:
greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine.
MAY 2019
*NEW GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS
The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

GRV asks participants to be aware that session dates and times are subject to change in hot weather. The GRV Hot Weather Policy is now being applied to GAP Pre-Entry Assessment dates. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.
