CEO’s Update
T
he fourth Annual VGAs, hosted by GRV at Crown Palladium on Friday 16 August, was a great celebration of the sport’s achievements over the past 12 months and I congratulate all the winners and nominees for their contribution to greyhound racing in Victoria. Presenters included the Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula, and GRV Racing Ambassador Brent Harvey and a new GRV Board Leadership Award was introduced this year. Another highlight of last month was the inaugural SEN National Straight Track Championship at Healesville on Sunday 18 August. I congratulate everyone involved, especially Healesville’s Manager, Cynthia O’Brien, in staging this great new addition to the national racing calendar that also showcases the safe racing benefits of straight tracks. Next year, the Championship Final will be held at Capalaba Greyhound Racing Club in Queensland following State heats and finals in Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. I’d like also to acknowledge Greyhounds WA and Cannington for hosting a great 2019 National Sprint and Distance Championships. Both Reidy’s Runner and Premium Share were worthy winners of the Distance and Sprint Championships respectively and Victoria’s own Tornado Tears had a great run to place second in the Distance Final. It was also a great opportunity to meet with key stakeholders from other Australian racing jurisdictions to help build stronger national approaches to key issues for the sport. Turning to news off the track, the GRV Board has signed off on the U-shaped track option for Traralgon following a consultation process that was managed by the Traralgon GRC Committee with support from GRV. I thank the Committee, club management and members for their work and input in finding a solution that will deliver one of the world’s leading edge greyhound tracks. The tender process for demolition of the current track is now underway and it’s expected that the new track should be operational by mid-2020.
announce that Greg Kerr has been appointed as GRV’s General Manager, Racing and he is expected to take up the position on 1 October 2019. Greg joins GRV from Greyhound Racing New Zealand (GRNZ) where he was Chief Operations Officer and Animal Welfare Manager for nearly six years. During that time, he helped drive a major reform of the code in New Zealand and positioned GRNZ as an industry leader in Australasia. Before working at GRNZ, Greg held senior executive and management positions in New Zealand’s manufacturing and hospitality sectors and was CEO of the New Zealand Kennel Club. I am confident that Greg’s long and strong involvement in greyhound racing combined with a proven track record in managing complex enterprises will make him a valuable addition to GRV and to the sport in Victoria. Also coming on board is media personality Kate Stevenson, who has signed on as the new GAP Ambassador. Kate has long been a supporter of GAP’s work as a genuine lover of greyhounds and will bring both passion and great knowledge of the breed to the role, spreading the word about what wonderful pets they make. And a reminder that the new Victorian Racing Integrity Board and Victorian Racing Tribunal are now both operational. The Board is responsible for endorsing annual integrity plans, providing recommendations on integrity budgets, policies and licensing, and considering proposed amendments to the rules of racing. The Tribunal, which replaces the RADB, will hear and determine serious charges made against licensed persons by controlling bodies and stewards and consider a broad range of appeals, including those relating to penalties imposed by controlling bodies. Some small matters still outstanding with the former RADB will be settled by the Tribunal as one of its first duties.
While final figures are still being crosschecked and confirmed, greyhound re-homing numbers were up around 4% on the previous year and up nearly 100% since 2014-15. Euthanasia numbers continued to fall and are now down more than 80% over the past four years. Significant advancement has also been made during 2018-19 in improving racing safety.

GRV’s financial result also improved in 2018-19, despite a drop in the racing population in early 2019, with a 4.9% increase in total income, a substantial deficit reduction was achieved which was also assisted by expenses being well under budget.
Finally, as it’s only three months now before the new Code of Practice becomes operational on 1 January 2020, I’d like to remind you about the support and resources available for participants to help ensure they are code ready. This includes a series of Code Information Sessions/Complete your EHMP Workshops now underway around Victoria. Sessions to date have been very well attended with participants reporting that they have found them very constructive. More sessions will be held over this and next month at Traralgon, Warragul, Sale and The Meadows. You can contact those clubs directly or visit greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ code-of-practice for dates and times.

Orson Allen raced in group company for the majority of the 2018/19 season.
Tears, the sheer weight of group races appearances by Orson Allen swayed the judges. On top of victories in the Group 1 Perth Cup, Group 1 Harrison Dawson, Group 2 Cranbourne Cup, Group 2 Horsham Cup and Group 3 Shootout, Orson Allen contested a further 11 group finals including being runner-up in two Group 1s and two country cups. Trainer Correy Grenfell can now reflect on a life-changing journey with the wonderfully consistent son of KC And All and Desalle Bale, which was an ever-present in feature racing Australia-wide over the last 12 months. “What a thrill,” Grenfell said. “The last 12 months, he’s been a dream dog. To win the races he did and the way he did, it was amazing.” “We had such a good ride with him. He changed our lives.” Despite missing several months of racing due to injury, Tornado Tears was named the Stayer of the Year in a season that saw him capture two of his four career Group 1 wins – in the 2018 National Distance Championship and the 2019 Zoom Top.

oveton resident Julie Mathieson was presented with the GRV Board Welfare Award at the VGAs.
Julie’s passion and love for greyhounds dates back to the 1970s and she met her first pet greyhound, Sally, at a Greyhound Adoption Program event at the Dandenong Showgrounds in the early 2000s. In 2006, Julie helped create Greyhound Safety Net (GSN) and has since been the face of the re-homing organisation, conducting all temperament assessments and liaising with owners and trainers, potential adopters, foster carers and vet clinics. “Animal welfare is GRV’s number one priority, as demonstrated by the significant funds and resources committed to racetrack safety, education around animal husbandry and, of course, re-homing former racing greyhounds,” said GRV Acting Chair, Peita Duncan. “Julie’s dedication to rehoming is simply incredible, and I know this first-hand because she re-homed two of my former race dogs prior to me joining GRV.”
Julie Mathieson has devoted much of her life to re-homing greyhounds.

performance in the Golden Easter Egg.
Trained by Andrea Dailly and bred and raced by the Wheeler family, Fernando Bale (Kelsos Fusileer – Chloe Allen) took all before him during an unprecedented racing career, winning 35 of his 44 starts.
“You’d have to say that he’s absolutely surpassed everyone’s expectations. He’s one of the best we’ve ever seen.”
Rated by many experts as Australia’s best ever, Fernando Bale claimed the first of his eight Group 1 victories when winning the National Derby in February 2015 at just his tenth start.
His progeny have won at Group 1 level over sprint, middle and staying distances, including Tornado Tears, Sennachie, My Redeemer, Poke The Bear, Dyna Patty, West On Augie, Hasten Slowly, Rippin’ Sam, Hecton Bale, Out Of Range, Deliver, Blue Moon Rising, Veloce Nero, Trouper Monelli, Velocity Liberty and Rockstar Patriot.
Fernando Bale also won the Traralgon and Bendigo Cups at Group 2 level and the Group 3 Bill Collins Memorial, while one of his greatest performances came in defeat when edged out by superstar kennelmate Dyna Double One in a Melbourne Cup for the ages.
“People might have questioned his stud career and how good he was going to be because he was such a good race dog and could he emulate that; well you’d have to say that he’s absolutely surpassed everyone’s expectations. “He’s one of the best we’ve ever seen.”
“Without doubt he’s the best sprinter I’ve seen. Just all class,” said greyhound racing historian Neil Brown. “His record speaks for itself. No dog in history has won the sprint races Fernando Bale won.” Fernando Bale was the Victorian Greyhound of the Year in 2015/16, the Australian Greyhound Racing Association (AGRA) Australian Greyhound of the Year for 2014/2015 and was awarded AGRA’s Run of the Year in 2015 for his

When he won the Adelaide Cup in October 2015 Fernando Bale became the world’s first greyhound racing millionaire, with his final prize money tally standing at an incredible $1,299,370, second only to Fanta Bale on the all-time Australian list.
“He has absolutely blown us all away,” said stud master Paul Westerveld.

His other seven triumphs at racing’s ultimate level were (in order); the Golden Easter Egg, Harrison-Dawson, Peter Mosman Classic, Maturity Classic, National Sprint Championship, Adelaide Cup and the Topgun.

It’s testament to dad and his training capabilities and the powers of the dog that he raced for so long.”

hen GRV launched its Hall Of Fame in 2009, legendary stayer Bold Trease was one of the inaugural inductees.
And at GRV’s 2018/19 Victorian Greyhound Awards ceremony, veteran Warrnambool trainer Norm McCullagh deservedly joined his immortal four-time Sandown Cup winner in the Hall Of Fame. “Apart from his work and his family, greyhound racing has probably been the love of his life,” said Norm’s son Allan McCullagh. “He’s very devoted to them and very caring and I know for a fact that a greyhound will go to the vet even before he’ll take himself to the doctor, so the greyhound always comes first. “He probably talks to the dogs more than he talks to us!” he added with a laugh. Norm enjoyed a remarkable bond with Bold Trease – The Warrnambool Warrior – that will go down in Australian racing folklore, winning four consecutive Sandown Cups in 198689, a feat it’s safe to say will never be repeated. Norm has also won his hometown Warrnambool Cup twice, courtesy of Super Mira (1984) and Midnight Flirt (1995), while in 2000 he trained the trifecta in the Warrnambool Classic
“That period of time with Bold Trease was amazing. He was public property, so the pressure was on and the expectation was high.” “Crimson Vixen winning the Bendigo Cup was amazing,” said Allan. “I know deep down he was really keen for her to win a good race and that turned out to be it. “He was pretty wound up all week in anticipation and to get the result he was pretty emotional.” Norm continues to be in great demand from the media when Sandown Cup time rolls around, while he makes the trip to Sandown Park on Melbourne Cup night where his champion is commemorated through the running of the Group 1 Bold Trease over the Sandown Cup course.

avid Gleeson was recognised for more than three decades involvement in greyhound racing as breeder, owner, administrator and sponsor when awarded the Ken Carr Medal. The award, for special or outstanding contribution to greyhound racing, requires the recipient to clearly demonstrate four key qualities; skill, integrity, empathy for others and leadership. Gleeson has been a successful breeder for many years in partnership with Bob Cummings, with the pair having produced and raced numerous Group-winning and city class greyhounds, with a dam-line that dates back to the 1960s..
“Bob Cummings and I have been breeding greyhounds together for 40 years and it’s a real team effort,” Gleeson said. “All the care, attention and the handling we give our greyhounds from an early age is one of the keys to our success. We rear our pups on Bob’s property. Bob does a lot of the hard yards with the pups when they are young, while I do the educating and it’s a formula that works.”
Shima Song has now followed Shimaguni’s lead in the breeding barn, producing Shima Shine, the winner of six of his seven starts including a 450m track record Ballarat run, in her first mating. “I attribute a lot of our success as a breeder to Nola Hogan,
But it hasn’t just been on the racetrack that Gleeson’s dedication and expertise has been to the fore. He recently stepped down after serving 31 years as a Sandown GRC director, including 15 years as Vice Chairman, while he sponsored the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA) for 35 years, through his Gleeson & Tonta company. David has also served as a Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board (RADB) member. Gleeson with Shima Shine when he was just 20 weeks old at Bob Cummings’ property in Koo Wee Rup.

Shimaguni (Primo Uno – Messines) was a prodigiously talented stayer, winning the Group 2 AWM Distance Championship and Group 3 Chairman’s Cup, and Gleeson has enjoyed great success with her progeny, most notably with Group 1 Paws Of Thunder winner Shima Bar, whose blossoming career was cut short by injury, and dual Group 2 winner Shima Song.
“A long time ago I asked Nola what the secret was to her success. She said keep your pups warm, dry and well fed. If you take care of your dogs properly – love and handle them – you’ll get the reward.”

privileged to know Ned Bryant. A son of the great Fernando Bale and the Gealls’ wonderful producer Where’s Demonica, My Redeemer fulfilled a lifelong dream for David when winning the 2018 Group 1 Melbourne Cup, having also won the Group 1 HarrisonDawson earlier in his career. During 2018/19, My Redeemer, a younger half-brother to Geall’s Golden Easter Egg and Topgun heroine Up Hill Jill, also qualified for the finals of the Group 1 Australian Cup, Group 1 Temlee, Group 3 Cranbourne Classic, Group 3 Warragul St Leger and Listed Maidment Memorial.

My Redeemer’s litter brother Emerald Rainbow was a prolific winner throughout 2018/19, qualifying for the finals of the Group 2 Geelong Cup, Group 3 Devonport Cup and Group 3 Warragul St Leger. Geall also guided Miss Splendamiro into multiple Group 1 appearances in 2018/19. “I believe you have to really look after your dogs to have any sort of sustained success,” Geall said. “With regard to breeding, we generally go to a very fast stud dog and we breed with females that can run 500m. “But the way you rear your pups is so important. It’s the simple things like giving them clean water every day, filling the holes in the runs, providing plenty of shade and plenty of handling. By doing that I reckon you give your pups a real chance.” In addition to his on-track success, Geall is renowned for his willingness to make himself readily available to media and assist with the promotion the sport.

Kennel Returns get an upgrade on FastTrack By Renn Barker
F
astTrack’s Kennel Return process has been upgraded with extra functions that will enable participants to better manage the greyhounds in their care and help meet their record keeping obligations under the new Code of Practice which comes into effect on 1 January 2020. The upgrade to FastTrack introduces new terms of Location and Activity to the Kennel Return process, allowing all participants, not just trainers, to add named and un-named greyhounds to their ‘kennel’ (location or address), and select the greyhound’s activity from six options: Training, plus new activities of Breeding, Whelping, Rearing, Educating or Spelling. Participants should be aware that greyhounds not in a trainer’s kennel when the upgrade was introduced are listed on FastTrack as being in the owner’s ‘kennel’. If this is not a greyhound’s current location, a Kennel Return should be submitted by the person who has the greyhound in their care.
Not all the greyhound activity changes you report will involve a location change, so the upgrade includes a function called Change Dog Activity to handle this, while the new Update Interstate Location function can be used by Owners to update the location and activity for greyhounds that move interstate. Participants are encouraged to submit Kennel Returns for all greyhounds currently on their properties as soon as possible, making sure to select the correct kennel address. Doing this will allow access to the new Greyhound Record function on FastTrack, for each greyhound in their kennel, when it is released late 2019 ahead of the new Code of Practice coming into effect on 1 January 2020. To find out more, visit: www.greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ kennels/kennel-return-guide or contact GRV’s Racing Services team on 03 8329 1100 or email: racingservices@grv.org.au
Aston Bintang and Vital Force contest the Waterloo Cup final, with the former proving too strong for his more experienced counterpart.
Young gun defies the odds in Waterloo Cup By Andrew Copley
A
ston Bintang became one of the youngest ever winners of the Waterloo Cup when taking out the 146th edition of the series in convincing fashion at Longwood on 25 August. Just 20 months of age, Aston Bintang (Barcia Bale x Fantastic Dotty) defeated experienced circle performer Vital Force (83 starts for 19 wins) in the final course. The Waterloo Cup is Victoria’s oldest greyhound race, with Aston Bintang’s trainer Paul Abela overwhelmed to learn about the prestige of the event in what was his first time coursing.
“To be honest I didn’t realise how much this race means to people until the last couple of days. The people here have been brilliant.”
Abela, who lives 45km west of Melbourne in Parwan, has made numerous group finals all over Australia in recent years but winning the Waterloo Cup brought a huge sense of relief. “I’ve made a lot of big finals but I haven’t won one. It’s been frustrating. We haven’t even run a place, so this has been a long time coming,” he said. Abela was thrilled for SA breeder owner Ray Borda, and he acknowledged good friend Peter Presutto, trainer of the runner-up Vital Force.
Craig believes Aston Bintang is destined for big things. “To do what he has done at such a young age, there’s no doubt he has the potential to be a circle track star. Paul is taking his time with him, which is a really smart move, so he could really get to the top of things with regards to feature race success.” The Waterloo Cup brought a close to the 2019 coursing year, with the 2020 season to kick off in April. The Waterloo Cup was Aston Bintang’s second time coursing, with Garland taking him to Lang Lang earlier in the season on behalf of Abela, where the youngster won a Puppy series. The speedster has had four starts outside of coursing for one win, a Best of Day run at Healesville in 19.10sec.
“This was one of the highest quality Waterloo Cups we have seen for a while,” he remarked.

“Unbelievable. This is the first time I’ve coursed and I’ve won the big one. Everyone kept telling me he’s too young, he’s only 20 months old. (They said) dogs this age can’t win the Waterloo but one of my best mates Ian Garland said you’ve got to go. Ian has coursed before and he said they won’t beat him…and he was right,” Abela said.
National Coursing Association President, Peter Craig was delighted with the quality of greyhounds that competed in the 2019 Waterloo Cup.

raralgon is a step closer to the return of its much-loved greyhound racing program thanks to funding from the Victorian Government towards a new U-shape track.
12
Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula visited the Traralgon GRC in August to confirm the Victorian Government’s election commitment to provide $1 million for upgrades to the Traralgon and Cranbourne tracks. “This investment highlights the economic benefits of greyhound racing not only in Gippsland, but across Victoria,” Minister Pakula said. “The greyhound racing industry contributes $500 million to Victoria’s economy annually and supports more than 4300 jobs across the state, many in regional areas.” In November 2018, GRV in conjunction with the Traralgon GRC closed the Traralgon track after an investigation identified that drainage issues had permanently compromised the track. The new U-shape track will provide a more reliable racing surface. GRV’s Board has signed off on the proposed track, which was designed by David Allan Consulting with input from Professor David Eager and a team at the University of Technology Sydney, working with the Traralgon GRC and GRV.
The U-shaped track was overwhelmingly favoured during a public consultation process in July. The track is expected to open in the middle of 2020 as a leading greyhound venue created with safe racing at front of mind. The project is also receiving political support at local level. “We’re getting on with growing and supporting grassroots greyhound racing right here in the Latrobe Valley while reaffirming our commitment to animal welfare,” said Member for Eastern Victoria, Harriet Shing. “All this ensures that Victoria remains the premier greyhound racing state.” The new track will feature 450m and 500m starting boxes, modern barriers and a surface that will help reduce injury to greyhounds. The greyhound racing industry in the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland region generates $50 million for the local economy and helps sustain more than 425 full-time equivalent jobs in the region. Traralgon GRC President, Don Haley said the project would help ensure a prosperous future for greyhound racing in the local region. “This is an important investment for the Latrobe Valley – it gives our club the opportunity to become one of the state’s premier racing and training centres,” Mr Haley said.

colours, Lachie’s favourite AFL team, to remember him. “Today is a healing day,” Nola Poulter, Lachie’s mother said. “It’s about helping the club with the traumatic memory from last year. We may have lost him, but we aren’t the only ones.” “To lose our beautiful son, but to turn it around into something positive is a hell of a journey for us as a family but we couldn’t do it without the support of Dunnstown.” On a day of sadness there was a shining light, the fourlegged Lachie’s Legacy who also sported a red and white outfit.
Racing for a legacy By Molly Haines
T
he name Lachie Poulter may not be familiar with the greyhound community, but his legacy will be.
At 25 years of age, Lachie suffered a heart attack and passed away shortly after playing a game of footy for his local club in Dunnstown. In the weeks that followed Lachie’s family created the Lachie’s Legacy Foundation to share his passion for AFL with all children, despite financial, demographical or social factors. Lachie’s Legacy is also the name of one very special greyhound who is racing in memory of the young man who lost his life too soon. On 27 July 2019 – round 15 of the Central Highlands Football League, a crowd of thousands packed the Dunnstown Football Oval in Sydney Swans’ red and white
Jeff Britton with Weblec Ace, who is one of a number of exciting youngsters in the Anakie trainer’s team.
“The syndicate is a group of mates and Lachie was the glue between them all and with a bit of luck he will run alright like the big fella himself,” Nola said. Lachie’s Legacy is a son of Worm Burner and Strongbeth who is bred by GRV Hall Of Famer Norm McCullagh and is trained by one of the kindest men in greyhound racing, Drouin’s Mark Johnson. GRV and Crocmedia’s Off The Bench TV captured the Lachie’s Legacy round and the moment the Poulter family met Lachie’s Legacy the greyhound for the first time. This one’s a tear-jerker. The emotion from the day was immense but watching Nola embrace the greyhound who is racing in memory of her son was something I will never forget. So now when you watch Lachie’s Legacy on the track for trainer Mark Johnson and owners The Canine Crew, remember to live, laugh and love for Lachie Poulter and his family. Earlier in the month, Weblec Ace was the fastest qualifier for the Group 3 Warragul St. Leger (460m) and the wellbred son of Kinloch Brae and Weblec Rose, started $2.50 favourite from box one in the final but could only finish sixth to kennelmate Mepunga Daniel.
As was the case in the Warragul St. Leger, Anakie-based Jeff Britton supplied half the field, with Weblec Ace joined by litter brother Weblec Jack ($7.30), Mister Harlewood ($9.90) and Spearhead ($12.50), while Angela Langton, Britton’s partner, lined up Black Signature ($9.70).
SEPTEMBER 2019
Weblec Ace once again set the pace in the heats of the Cranbourne Classic when clocking a best of night 29.92s on debut at the track and after drawing box three he was sent out at $2.60.
First prize in the Warragul St Leger and Cranbourne Classic was $25,000 each, and the kennel’s dominance in the two age-restricted features indicates a big year ahead for the Britton/Langton team.
By Gerard Guthrie
I
t was a case of second time lucky in a feature final in the month of August for Weblec Ace when Jeff Britton’s exciting youngster was an all-the-way winner of the Group 3 Cranbourne Classic Final (520m).
“When you’re the fastest heat winner you just want them to do everything right,” Britton said following Weblec Ace’s Cranbourne Classic win on 24 August. “He got out well and had a clear run. He probably came out well at Warragul too but Get It Gizmo just pinged and Curt Lee came across and they all jammed up.” The victory gave the Britton family back-to-back Cranbourne Classic successes, with Jeff’s brother Robert having won the event in 2018 with Slingshot Hammer. The Weblec line stems from South Australia, and Jeff also trained Weblec Ace’s mother Weblec Rose and her multiple Group-winning litter sister Weblec Belle.

Welfare & Re-homing Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Greyhound Welfare and Re-homing
Music in kennel blocks
S
ome of you may be aware, in August The Meadows commenced trialling providing music in the kennel blocks on race day. Hyperactivity, stress and distress are sometimes observed in greyhounds kennelled at racetracks during a race meeting. These behaviours not only impact on the welfare of the greyhound displaying them, but also on the greyhounds in neighbouring kennels and on racetrack staff working with the greyhounds. Research has shown playing music can sooth animals. Music in kennel blocks, both at home and at a racetrack, could reduce stress and help greyhounds to settle down to rest while kennelled and waiting for their races. GRV will keep participants informed about the progress of the trial.

The GAP has gone from strength to strength since it first started 23 years ago with an increasing number of Victorians wanting to have a greyhound as a family pet.
New ambassador for GAP Executive producer of ‘3AW Breakfast with Ross and John’ and co-host of the station’s ‘A Moveable Feast’ program, Kate is excited and honoured to be part of the GAP team to help spread the word about why greyhounds make great pets.
“I loved helping feed them and I was very lucky to learn from a young age what a beautiful and docile breed they are.” “Once I was older and settled into a house, I started fostering greyhounds with GAP. Fostering is such a rewarding thing to do. I am now excited to be able to share my experiences and help spread the word about these beautiful dogs.” The GAP has gone from strength to strength since it first started 23 years ago with an increasing number of Victorians wanting to have a greyhound as a family pet.

Don't wait, apply for DNA today!

G
RV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early. For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet
3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration. GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.
For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

and Barcia Bale, which was retired from active stud duties earlier this year. “The Wheelers breed great dogs in both ability and temperament and ‘Orson’ ticks every box,” said Paul Westerveld, Meticulous Lodge stud master. “We were super excited when we found out he would be coming to Meticulous Lodge. We loved his breeding and loved him as a race dog. “He has taken to his new kennel environment, settling in between Fabregas and Fernando.
Orson Allen (centre) is flanked by Fabregas and Fernando Bale on the walker at Meticulous Lodge.
“He has learnt how to go on the walker and loves it. As soon as he comes into the kennel the first thing he does is run straight onto it.” Orson Allen is bred in the purple, being a son of US sire KC And All and Desalle Bale, a Group-winning daughter of Go Wild Teddy and phenomenal producer Princess Bale, making her a litter sister to Barcia Bale.
Orson the newest recruit to all-star stud team
Orson Allen lived up to his regal bloodlines on the track, winning 31 of his 61 starts, highlighted by Group 1 victories in the Perth Cup and Harrison-Dawson, while he was runnerup in both the Temlee and Maturity Classic at Group 1 level.

Orson Allen, which was last month crowned Greyhound Clubs Australia (GCA) Australian Greyhound of the Year and Victorian Greyhound of the Year for 2018/19, was retired after being injured during the running the Victorian Final of the National Sprint Championship on 8 August.

He immediately joined Meticulous Lodge’s all-star stud roster, where he will follow two champion Wheeler-line sires that have dominated the Australian breeding landscape in recent years in GCA’s Sire of the Year Fernando Bale
UPCOMING GRV GRV VIC BRED Series races are designed to promote and reward Victorian Bred Greyhounds. Each series is designed to give an equal opportunity to a variety of greyhounds, of similar grade and experience, a chance to compete for above average prizemoney. GRV VIC BRED Series are open to Victorian Bred Greyhounds and all provincial finals carry a VICGREYS Bonus. Listed are when GRV VIC BRED Series commence during September and October 2019.
Orson Allen will commence stud duties at an enticing $3300 service fee, with Meticulous Lodge’s phone lines already running hot. “The interest has been amazing,” said Michelle. “We already have a waiting list and I guess time will tell if he will be a leading stud dog. “His fertility is brilliant. We have started collecting him and will be focusing on females on season as a priority and slowly working through the wait list as we can.”

Peter Galo lowered Eye Got It’s 350m track record at Healesville when clocking 18.65sec.
Peter Galo sets Healesville record straight By Gerard Guthrie

ictorian star Peter Galo confirmed himself as Australia’s best straight-course sprinter with a track record-breaking victory in the inaugural SEN National Straight Track Championship (350m) at Healesville on 18 August.
Peter Galo at trainer Garry Selkrig after their big win. Photos by: Clint Anderson.
While track specialist Peter Galo started a short-priced favourite, jubilant trainer Garry Selkrig left nothing to chance by bringing a lucky charm trackside; his former prolific irondog Stagger. “Stagger had 64 wins and it’s his birthday today,” Selkrig explained. “The last time I brought Stagger to the track, Peter Galo won the Shepparton Cup on his birthday, the 18th of August, and today he’s won the Nationals. That’s why we brought him! “Stagger’s got a chocolate cake in the car so it’s all worked out perfectly.” The first ever Group Listed National Championship saw the best straight-track speedsters from Victoria, South Australia and Queensland do battle for a $35,000 purse, as part of the lucrative Healesville Cup Carnival.
The middle alley proved to be no concern whatsoever as Peter Galo was best to begin and showed his rivals a clean pair of heels, trouncing well-backed Queenslander Certification ($6.20) by four lengths, with Myrniong And All third.
Peter Galo’s scintillating time of 18.65s eclipsed Eye Got It’s previous track record of 18.68s and improved the winner’s sensational Healesville 350m record to 15 from 21, while he’s undefeated in two 300m assignments.
SEPTEMBER 2019
After winning the previous Sunday’s Victorian State Final in 19.09s, Peter Galo, a son of Peter Rocket and Flossy, started $2.10 favourite in the Championship from box five ahead of Victoria’s other representative Myrniong And All at $3.40.

The highs and lows of participation: support when needed
O
wning, breeding, training or otherwise participating in greyhound racing can bring unquestionable highs, as varied as the pride and reward of owning, breeding or training a city or group winner or seeing a retired ex-racer of yours happily recognise you years into its life in the wider community – it’s why we all do what we do. But sometimes there are real difficulties and disappointments and lows, and sometimes events in life totally outside the realm of greyhound racing get in the way. Particularly for those who keep greyhounds, that there is little respite from the day to day workload needed to care for and train/race greyhounds when these sorts of things occur can make things even tougher. These pressures can cause great stress and affect mental health: it is something we see more regularly than you might think. While we all put care of greyhounds at the centre of what we do, sometimes taking best care of our greyhounds means ensuring that we also take care of ourselves and those around us. It is really important that we as participants do a few things here. First, recognise that stress and difficulty in maintaining participation can and does occur, for many reasons. If you think you or someone you know is having a difficult time, reach out to them. Second, be aware that there are avenues within the sport of greyhound racing to get support or assistance.
WHAT IS THE GOTBA?
Are you a member of the GOTBA? If not, please contact us via the channels below. Website: gotbav.org.au General enquiries: gotbav@gmail.com Phone: 0423 357 620
Those avenues: •
Other participants – we should all be open to genuine assistance to fellow participants, where possible;
•
GOTBA Vic – contact us. We can help with putting you in touch with potential assistance; and
•
Your local club.
You should also be aware that the Helping Hand Fund - a trust fund, originally created by GOTBA Vic, but administered by trustees including representatives from GOTBA Vic, SGRC and the MGRA – exists to assist persons connected with the sport of greyhound racing (including dependants) who suffer injury while caring for greyhounds or who suffer illness or genuine financial hardship. Applications can be made to the Helping Hand Fund for assistance by getting in contact with us (you do not have to be a GOTBA Vic member). Victorian Greyhound Awards On a separate note, congratulations to the winners of awards or honours at the Victorian Greyhound Awards held on 16 August 2019 at the Palladium at Crown. A great night of recognition and appreciation. All awards and honours recognise a great deal of care, knowledge and hard work, not to mention emotional, physical and financial investment in our sport and our greyhounds. Well done.
The Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of member and their greyhounds. GOTBA Committee: Lynton Hogan (President), Robert Britton & Sandra Reed (Co-Vice Presidents), Gayle Osbourne (Secretary), John Reid, Karen Leek, Geoff Miles, Stan Ralph and Jess Spoljaric (General Committee).
Testing Dates Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: •
•
have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at:
greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.
Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently. Pre-entry Assessment Booking Number:

gapbooking@grv.org.au From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA
GRV asks participants to be aware that session dates and times are subject to change in hot weather. The GRV Hot Weather Policy is now being applied to GAP Pre-Entry Assessment dates. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.
