Editor: Andrew Copley Deputy Editor: Molly Haines Greyhound Monthly Victoria (GMV) magazine is produced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), the governing body of greyhound racing in this state. GRV strongly encourages all Victorian greyhound racing participants - in particular breeders and trainers - to take the time to read each issue of GMV to ensure they are across relevant key issues. Each edition of GMV aims to provide an overview of key happenings in relation to Victorian greyhound racing that occurred during the previous month, as well as promoting significant and relevant upcoming activities and events.

COVER: GRV Acting Chair Peita Duncan, 3AW’s Kate Stevenson and National GAP Ambassador Todd McKenney at the Royal Melbourne Show.
Welcome to the October edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria where you can see there’s lot happening in the sport in Victoria at the moment. Firstly, I’d like welcome Ray Bartolo as a member of the GRV Board. As one of Victoria’s most respected greyhound breeders, trainers and owners and former club director, Ray will be a strong industry advocate on the Board. Also coming onboard this month is GRV’s new General Manager for Racing, Greg Kerr. I am sure you will see Greg around as he’ll be a regular at race meetings, so feel free to introduce yourself and discuss your ideas. In related news, I also welcome Cherie Nicholl as Greyhound Australasia’s new Chief Executive Officer and GRV looks forward to working with her. In other news, GRV has completed its new Strategic Plan for 2019-24, developed with input from all stakeholders including the clubs and it will shortly be posted on our web page. While it continues to ensure that greyhound welfare is a core priority, there is a strong new focus on commercial outcomes, including: increasing customer and consumer engagement to boost revenues to be reinvested in the sport; getting more greyhounds to the track while ensuring their welfare throughout their lifecycle; and working with participants, clubs and all other stakeholders to build a stronger, more unified industry. For the moment though, GRV is very much focused on helping participants get ready for the new Code of Practice, which comes into force on 1 January 2020. We are working with clubs to provide support available for completing Establishment and Health Management Plans (EHMP) as required by the Code. This includes free appointments at clubs where staff will help participants complete their EHMPs, provide greyhound specialist veterinarians to review and sign off the EHMP and then lodge EHMP declarations on behalf of participants if needed. Please contact your local club for more details.
Another initiative to support participants is now also underway - a major upgrade of FastTrack - which will include a new interface for mobile devices. As part of this process GRV’s Business and Information Technology Services Branch is running focus groups at GRV head office with participants to find out what works best for them. People attending the catered focus groups receive a fee and travel expenses. Participants interested in attending one of these groups should email GRV BITS Product Manager Chris Hawken at chawken@grv.org.au
CEO’S UPDATE
CEO’S UPDATE
Looking ahead, a program of work for new gallop runs is now being rolled out as part of the Victorian Government’s $2 million commitment towards training facilities. Planning is underway and construction is expected to start soon at our Geelong and Shepparton Clubs, followed by Horsham, Traralgon and Warrnambool. On the track, we have the TAB Great Chase Grand Final coming up on 23 October at The Meadows. Now in its 17th year, the Great Chase is one of Australia’s most successful sporting events for charity and has provided more than $600,000 to more than 100 community groups across the State that care for the intellectually and physically disabled. And looking ahead, the new Metro Spring Carnival will kick off at The Meadows with the Hume Cup and Silver Bullet on 4 November. The Carnival incorporates races for greyhounds of all grades and concludes at Sandown Park with the Melbourne Cup and Bold Trease finals on 29 November. And then it’s followed by the Gippsland Carnival the month after, so we can look forward to a feast of great racing this spring and summer.

GENERAL ENQUIRIES

BARTOLO APPOINTED TO GRV BOARD One of Victoria’s most respected greyhound breeders, trainers and owners, Ray Bartolo, has been appointed to the board of GRV. Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula congratulated Mr Bartolo, a 30-year veteran of the industry, on his appointment. Mr Bartolo has held positions on the animal welfare committees of Greyhound Clubs Australia and GRV, as well as serving on GRV’s Animal Welfare Taskforce. He has also been a director of the Geelong Greyhound Racing Club and the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association. “Ray is passionate about greyhound racing and greyhound welfare and will be a great asset to the GRV board,” Minister Pakula said. “The greyhound racing industry is entering a new era and people like Ray will play a vital role in helping the industry realise its potential.” GRV’s Acting Chair, Peita Duncan said Ray’s appointment would be a great asset to the board. “The members of the board are pleased to welcome Ray, whose experience and passion will help GRV continue to go from strength to strength,” Ms Duncan said. The greyhound racing industry in Victoria generates $500 million for the economy and helps sustain more than 4,300 full-time-equivalent jobs.
MYRNIONG MAKES ALL IN HEALESVILLE CUP It was persistence and consistence that landed Myrniong And All the $47,000 purse at the Healesville Cup this year. Anthony Azzopardi’s charge had been working up to this, after impressive runs in the National Straight Track Championships and Victorian State Final.
“Their passion for the dogs is unbelievable and I couldn’t be more appreciative of all the hard work they both do.” Myrniong And All began well and avoided trouble working his way over to the inside as he defeated Kelvin Greenough’s Friday Frothies ($5.70) by 1.27 lengths in 19.01s, turning the tables from their heat meeting one week earlier.
Azzopardi was full of praise. “He’s an unbelievable dog. He’s just a little ripper and I reckon he truly deserves this.” “He needed to get out and run and he did. He did come across, but he didn’t crash. He worked his way across and once he sees daylight he takes off. “When he hurt himself at his last start at Horsham (June 4) my main goal was to get him right for the Healesville Cup. He was ready a bit sooner than I expected so we had a go at the Straight Track Championship first. In Azzopardi’s absence, Myrniong And All was handled by Neil Jones, with the former NSW trainer indebted to the assistance of Jones and his 21-year-old nephew Jacob Azzopardi. “The dog might race in my name, but this is their win too,” Azzopardi offered.

Hooked on Scotch
Electrifying youngster and recent Speed Star winner Hooked On Scotch has booked himself a ticket into the Adelaide Cup final on October 11 after taking out the $10,000 State-ofOrigin event at Angle Park 26 September. Race 3 at Angle Park was split into four two-dog match races yesterday, each featuring a Victorian and a South Australian representative, with the Vics making it a clean sweep.

HOOKED ON SCOTCH LEAPFROGS INTO ADELAIDE CUP
After dual Group 1 winner Sennachie (Steve White) had set the time standard at 29.21sec over Angle Park’s 515m trip, Hooked On Scotch (Jason Thompson) overcame a bumping duel with his opponent Fly For Fun before clocking 29.19sec. As part of a new cross promotion between GRV and Greyhound Racing SA, the fastest greyhound across the four matches was guaranteed a place in the $75,000 to-thewinner Group 1 Adelaide Cup final on October 11, bypassing the heats.
Tornado Tears
And in a further reward, Hooked On Scotch has also gained entry into the $25,000 to-the-winner four-dog Shootout (515m) at Sandown Park on 14 November. Hooked On Scotch (Barcia Bale – Nicki Fields) is a 21-monthold half brother to recently retired champion Poke The Bear. Earlier in September, Sandown Park held its ninth Speed Star event, where Hooked On Scotch again took time honours, blitzing all-comers with a scintillating 29.11sec victory on a soggy Sandown surface. Probably the most memorable match on Speed Star night was between Lucy’s Milo and NSW sensation Feral Franky, with the pair almost producing a dead-heat before the former got the nod.

SO FAR, SO GREAT. BY PHIL WEIR There have been thousands of smiles, laughs, cheers, pats, lunches and dollars for community groups in Victoria during the TAB Great Chase, currently doing the rounds of Greyhound Racing Victoria regional and metro clubs. Since 2003, GRV has been inviting local community care and disability groups and people to a day at the track; and potentially send them home with cash for their group. The response this year has been better than ever. So far almost 100 groups – about 1200 people - have had a day out at the dogs, and more than $18,000 has been donated.
Greg Miller, CEO of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club, explained what The Great Chase means to Sandown. “It’s a fantastic initiative by GRV and I love the look on everyone’s faces across the day. “It’s the greatest community involvement initiative that GRV does, at a great time of year.” So far this year the chase has been to Warragul, Cranbourne, Sale, Bendigo, Ballarat, Horsham and Shepparton and Sandown; with Healesville, Warrnambool and Meadows to come. The final – a huge event for groups and the dogs racing – will be held on October 23, when community groups from all over the state converge on The Meadows for another chance to see their mates again (and win!).
On the day, each group is allocated a runner in 4 races and win money based on their dog’s placing, so everyone has a chance to take some much-needed funds. Some have used theirs for more day trips or recreational equipment; some for furniture or even towards a new bus. At the Ballarat event, long-term attendees Eureka Village has even been accumulating their winnings - $500 last year and $300 this year – for a new pool table for the residents. In most cases, the residents get to chose how to spend the money. Eureka has also expanded their greyhound connection by bringing their group to the track for dinner a few extra times every year. There’s also a social angle. In Horsham, Colin and Russel came from Ararat with the team from Manna Gums Nursery and Wood ‘n’ Crete, on track for their 15th year. They explained the day holds more than just racing for their charges; it’s chance to socialise with old mates.
Ballarat’s Great Chase event saw more than 200 people in attendance.
“The guys make connections with other groups and make lifelong friends at the greyhounds; that keeps us coming back year after year” said Colin. “The day is so great, and we use any winnings to expand the program and provide more day programs.”
6
Groups have been loving Great Chase so long they have started to develop experts. At the Sale club, Ohana services group came along with a secret weapon in 2019, namely John; AKA ‘Mr GRV’. Apparently, if you’ve been to a greyhound racing club in Gippsland you will have run into John, who knows every trainer, every dog and all the staff at the tracks, so has been letting everyone else know how the day works and who to cheer for in the races.

LATEST NEWS SO FAR, SO GREAT.
POSITIVE OUTCOME FOR MAGNETO... BY PHIL WEIR For fans of the X-Men franchise, the name Magneto could foster admiration or disdain, apparently (I’m sure we’ll get letters), but when it’s applied to a 4-year-old greyhound (rather than a mutant subspecies of humanity) it’s ALL about positive attraction. Magneto the greyhound has finally found a home, after more than 200 days at GAP. You see for Magneto, there is a negative. He has pannus, an eye disorder that requires regular treatment. It doesn’t stop him from being playful, goofy and affectionate, or loving cheese and his squeaky pig; it just means regular eyedrops to stop the advancement of the pannus. Katrina and Doug Heenan of Carrum Downs fell for the big lad when he was featured on GAP’s Facebook page a few weeks ago. Doug says, “Other than being a stunning dog, it broke our hearts to read that he had been at GAP for so long and kept being overlooked simply because of his eye condition.” “I had adopted Prada (our 11-year-old German Shepard) 18 months prior to getting Magneto, and she had dermatitis as well as pancreatitis, plus her age, she had also spent a lengthy time at the shelter. “Magneto is settling in really well at home. His pannus isn’t proving too much of an issue. The only issue we seem to find is at night in the backyard where the light isn’t great, but he follows Prada around, and he is learning to walk the fence lines as well.” “Magneto has brought all of us a lot of joy. Even Prada is a lot happier, which is fantastic. Prada herself has become a lot more active as well which is good for her. We were a bit wary at first in getting another dog, but when we watched them play at GAP, we knew we were making the right decision for us, for Prada and of course Magneto.”
VALE BARCIA BALE BY MICK FLOYD Dual Australian sire of the year Barcia Bale passed away last Thursday following a brief battle with cancer. The nine-and-a-half-year-old was diagnosed with cancer in his spleen which had begun to spread throughout his body and had begun to affect his quality of life. He was humanely euthanised with his stud master Paul Westerveld and wife Michelle by his side. Bred and owned by Paul Wheeler, Barcia Bale was bred for success on and off the track. The product of Melbourne Cup winner Go Wild Teddy and Princess Bale, a daughter of champion producer Gold Rush Bale, Barcia Bale burst onto the scene winning his first 11 starts. After two more wins, tragedy struck. While doing his regular work at home Barcia Bale broke his hock, leading to his immediate retirement. He was sent to Westerveld’s Meticulous Lodge where, once recovered, he began stud duties. Among his progeny are Melbourne Cup winners Dyna Double One and Aston Dee Bee – both of which are now established at stud – Million Dollar Chase winner Mystic Riot, Easter Egg winner Zipping Bailey, group 1 winners Raw Ability, Fast Times, Barooga Brett and Mepunga Blazer, as well as a host of other group performed greyhounds. In fact, Barcia Bale progeny have won over 16,000 races and earned more than $46m in prize money, more than $12m more than his closest rival over that period, Cosmic Rumble. Barcia Bale was truly a generational sire.

GRIU; EFFICIENT, EFFECTIVE. In a further example of pursuing efficiency and effectiveness, GRV’s Intelligence Unit (GRIU) is planning some changes. Following a recent review of the welfare inspectorate, improvements will be made to make the inspection process cleaner, without depleting the importance GRV’s priority of welfare investigation. GRIU Integrity Operations Manager Shane O’Connell describes the move as ‘reducing our regulatory footprint’. “The bottom line is that industry participants should see less of us, but we will be able to get more done.” Shane is quick to point out this doesn’t dilute the priorities. “We see this as a structure change, not a change to the priority we place on non-compliance.” Another change participants will notice will be the body cameras to be worn by inspectors when visiting properties.

“The body cameras are now standard practice for compliance organisations, and we’ll be following the likes of RSPCA, Fisheries and others to ensure we have the best method of record available. They are fully legal, and every measure will be taken to assure the privacy of nonparticipants is protected.” GRIU is keen to inform the industry that the cameras are for the benefit of the participants as much as they are GRV, and their use is mandatory. In light of the forthcoming Code of Practice, there will also be an emphasis from GRIU on education. “We would rather help the participants to achieve compliance with the code than deal with non-compliance further down the track.” The body cameras will be introduced throughout October.

MAX MESMERISED BY GRAND FINAL GIFT BY ANDREW COPLEY
Seventeen-year-old footy fanatic Max Uren was in a state of shock when GRV CEO Alan Clayton presented him with four tickets to the 2019 AFL Grand Final on the morning of the game.
2019 CHASE FOR CHARITY
It all came about thanks to greyhound racing’s Chase for Charity promotion on Off The Bench radio, which has raised almost $120,000 for a range of charity organisations over the past three years.
2nd Liam Pickering (Victorian Men’s Shed Association) $14,840
The Uren family, from the small town of Derrinallum in Victoria’s west, has spent 99 days at Ronald McDonald House since February after Max was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma.
A total of $39,604 was raised in the 2019 Chase for Charity as Off The Bench tipsters Craig Hutchison, Liam Pickering and Dr Turf each bet $500 on the greyhounds every week for 30 weeks. “Max and his family have great courage,” GRV’s Marketing and Strategic Communication GM, Louise Martin said. “You talk about the courage involved in playing football, but this takes it to another level.” “From our Racing Minister, Martin Pakula to the GRV Board and CEO Alan Clayton, this is how we give back to the community. We employ more than 4,000 people throughout regional Victoria and they are our family.” Max and younger brother Ned also took part in the Macca’s Kick to Kick at the MCG as part of their Grand Final experience.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT
BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSc, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING DEPARTMENT
RETIREMENT... WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? When we talk about retirement, we use the term to mean the greyhound is no longer part of the racing industry. So, retirement does not include winding down in preparation for being a pet, breeding, whelping, spelling, recovering from injury, taking a rest, waiting to come on season, or waiting to go to GAP or a rescue group/shelter. A retired greyhound is one that is no longer part of the industry; that is, either is a pet (with the registered racing owner or a third party) or is no longer alive. For several years, greyhounds have been ‘retired for breeding’ on FastTrack. Because breeding can only occur by a registered breeder, with a female that is registered for breeding (i.e. a valid ‘pink card’), and the new Kennel Return allows a participant to tell GRV that the greyhound is being used for breeding, this is no longer a valid retirement and so we will be looking at this functionality. GRV will consult with the industry in coming months on the ‘retired for breeding’ issue. Can you please continue to keep your greyhounds’ location and activity (for example spelling, breeding, rearing, education etc) up to date by using the new Kennel Return functionality. Any questions please Welfare staff for support on 03 8329 1108.
THIRD PARTY RETIREMENTS TO GO INTO PENDING STATUS – NEW CHANGES TO FASTTRACK Third-party retirements are when the greyhound is retired to either a re-homing group or any person who is not the registered racing owner. Sometime in the next few weeks, a change will be made to FastTrack such that these third-party retirements will be placed into a ‘PENDING’ status until the new owner’s details are verified by GRV. There will be no change to the retirement process on FastTrack, however, you will: 1. note that the greyhound’s status will remain as Racing or Unnamed and the greyhound remains in your MyDogs list until GRV confirms the pending retirement; and 2. receive an automated email advising you of this. Once the new owner’s details are verified by GRV, and the retirement has been confirmed by GRV, the greyhound’s status will change to ‘Retired’ and the greyhound will move to your ‘MyRetiredDogs’ list. At this point you will receive another email to advise you of this. GRV will contact you if the new owner’s details cannot be confirmed within 15 working days.
10
To ensure GRV can confirm the retirement as quickly as possible we ask you to ensure you get all the new owners contact details and let them know GRV will be in touch. New owner details required by GRV are listed on the FastTrack retirement screen and are FULL NAME, COMPLETE ADDRESS (including post code), PHONE NUMBER and EMAIL ADDRESS (if they have one). In addition, an ALTERNATIVE CONTACT NAME and PHONE NUMBER are required (if the new owner can’t be reached in the event the greyhound is found loose). For example, the alternative contact can be a friend or family member.
HOUSING GREYHOUNDS IN TRANSPORT VEHICLES OVERNIGHT GRV recognises that there may be times when Registered Participants travel to race or coursing meetings, which require overnight stay(s), and where greyhound housing in kennels is not available. Furthermore, in an emergency situation where greyhounds must be evacuated from their usual kennel address, participants will temporarily house their greyhounds in trailers until they can return home. The GRV Transport Policy requires, and the new Code of Practice will require, GRV approval for the overnight housing of greyhounds in stationary vehicles. To provide the ability to comply with this and to ensure the safety and welfare of GRV registered greyhounds, GRV has established an approval process for the temporary overnight housing of greyhounds in a stationary transport vehicle or trailer. NOTE: this requirement does not apply to participants driving through the night with greyhounds (this is covered by the Transport Policy); it only applies if the greyhounds are remaining in a stationary vehicle for more than 6 hours after 8.00pm. There are two forms of approval: 1. Self-assessment and approval for 1-2 nights’ accommodation; and 2. GRV approval for 3 or more nights’ accommodation. Copies of the forms and general information about the approval process are available on the Care and Standards website at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au.
HOT WEATHER AND TRANSPORT POLICIES The GRV Board approved the yearly update to these two policies. This year the changes are very minor, and mainly relate to making terminology consistent with the racing rules. The updated policies are available on the Care and Standards website.
GRV is continuing with the practical workshops to support participants and their greyhounds in establishing and maintaining a successful career in the sport. Current topics include: ■■ Greyhound Injury and Illness Management workshops already delivered by Dr Chris Boemo. ■■ Maximising Re-homing Success workshops to be delivered by GAP’s Senior Behaviourist, Diana Rayment. ■■ Nutrition for Success delivered by Dr Ray Ferguson. All the workshops include a presentation and a practical session. So, if you want to know more about maximising your chances of re-homing your greyhound after retirement or about developing the best diet for your greyhound, come along and participate in these free sessions.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT
GRV WORKSHOPS IN 2019
Another win for GAP at the Royal Melbourne Show; the ‘Best Indoor Retail Exhibitor’ sash, for the second time. Left: Katrina Wheaton with Amy.
THE POWER OF THE SHOW
Katrina Wheaton had never had a pet. She had thoughts that it might be nice, and her son was keen, but she kept on saying no. In 2017, on a trip to the Show, she came across the GAP stand and – like many others – went in for a pat. Suddenly it all made sense. “We came to the GAP stand at the show and I saw the greyhounds sitting so beautifully, and I went over and started patting them, asking the owners about the dogs, and I was really intrigued by them.” “I actually came back to the show – back to the stand another three times and all the numbers started stacking up as to why I should get one. I thought they would be too much work. We’ve only got a townhouse, so I thought we would probably have to get a small dog.” “We didn’t want a barker – when I found out these dogs were suitable for a smaller house, need minimal walking, are really low maintenance and rarely bark, well, all the boxes were ticked. They’re the only breed of dog that was suitable.”
“Now I’ve got Amy, and she is almost four years old, and I’ve had her for a bit over a year and a half.” Amy’s personality, and her comfort in a busy environment like the show, was evident. Like many greyhounds, she’s keen to lean on leg to show she’s calm. Amy is also a bit of a social media star; Katrina has even arranged an Instagram account. “In winter she’s a bit of a fashion icon as well. She likes her coats.” Katrina has a description we hear often. “She has the sweetest and gentlest nature; a real lady. Very elegant. She has taken over the house a little bit. Bit of a princess, but that’s probably my fault to, because I let her…” A chance meeting with a breed she wasn’t sure about, and now Katrina has a greyhound she’s mad about. Katrina’s now proudly showing Amy off in her GAP volunteer outfit, and Amy is lapping up the affection… So, the Royal Melbourne Show is a bit more than Dagwood dogs; it’s also about finding new friends.
GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA OCTOBER 2019
If there can be any proof that the monumental work that goes into GAP’s Royal Melbourne Show is worth every moment, it came from a volunteer at the show this week. Katrina, on her second volunteer shift for the week with more to come, is living proof that the opportunity to meet a greyhound can form a long, loving relationship.

DON’T WAIT, APPLY FOR DNA TODAY! GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early.
12
For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia.
Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.
GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab. For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

The Code of Practice requires every greyhound to have a greyhound record created at birth to record all health care and veterinary treatments given to the greyhound during its life. This Greyhound Record must be kept up to date, and travel with the greyhound when it moves to a new establishment, so that every person caring for the greyhound is aware of their health and veterinary history. Participants are currently required to keep treatment records and typically use a Treatment Book to record these. The Greyhound Record required by the Code means that separately keeping these records in a Treatment Book will not be necessary from 1st January 2020. To assist participants with record keeping, FastTrack can now be used to record health management, injury and illness events, including treatments given. For any greyhound in your MyDogs list, a new Action called Greyhound Record can be selected and records entered. Greyhound Record is available now to use in FastTrack. Whilst keeping the Greyhound Record is not required until 1st January 2020, participants can use this function to keep Treatment Records instead of using Treatment Books. For those that prefer to use a paper-based Greyhound Record rather than the FastTrack option, a hardcopy template Greyhound Record is available.
In great news for participants living in the North West, Horsham & Bendigo Greyhound Racing Clubs will jointly sponsor two special Code Information Sessions to be held in Mildura and Swan Hill during October. ■■ Mildura - Wednesday 16 October 2019, starting 5.30pm, at the Mildura Pound TBF, 9184 Calder Hwy, Irymple. ■■ Swan Hill - Thursday 17 October 2019, starting 11.30am, at the Swan Hill Region Information Centre, Corner McCrae & Curlewis Streets, Swan Hill. To attend either of these special Code Information Sessions, register by emailing codehelp@grv.org.au or call the Code Support Line on 1300 144 360, by Monday 14 October 2019. The Code team will be on track during the twilight meetings at Horsham on Tuesday 15 October and Bendigo Friday 18 October should any participants require assistance or have questions on the Code.

In other news, nearly 450 participants have attended the ten Code Information Sessions/Workshops held so far, which is a fantastic result. Judging by the feedback received to date, participants are finding these Workshops helpful in understanding how to become compliant by 1 January 2020. There are only two more scheduled (outside the North West) in this series: Warragul on Wednesday October 2, starting 5.30pm, and Sale on Saturday October 12, starting at 10am. Visit the Code of Practice webpage on Greyhound Care and Standards (greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/code-of-practice) for online booking links or contact the Club direct. Upcoming Code Workshop reminders are posted every Monday on FastTrack.
VET EHMP REVIEW AND APPROVE APPOINTMENTS Shepparton, Sandown, Cranbourne and Sale clubs currently have Vet appointments available during October for participants to have their completed EHMPs reviewed and approved. To book an appointment, contact the club direct. The list of upcoming appointment venues and dates will be posted every Thursday on FastTrack.

RACING UPDATE
BY STUART LAING, ACTING GENERAL MANAGER, RACING
DOUBLE LURES
METRO CARNIVAL
Victorian tracks will begin to transition to new double lure arms following a successful and positive trial period. The decision has been made following a recommendation from University of Technology Sydney combined with industry feedback that the double lure arm version trialled at The Meadows, Bendigo and Cranbourne had greyhounds more engaged throughout their races. The transition to the two-lure arm will begin at Sandown and Warragul on Thursday 3 October. Remaining tracks will transition in the coming months following the completion of infrastructure modifications. GRV is working on a design that will allow Geelong’s finish on lure to accommodate two lures and a modified version for straight track racing at Healesville.
The new Victorian Metro Carnival of greyhound racing will kick off at The Meadows with the Hume Cup Final (600m) and Silver Bullet (525m) on Monday 4 November. The second leg will feature the Group 1 invitational TAB Topgun (525m) and Group 1 invitational TAB Topgun Stayers (725m) at The Meadows on Saturday 9 November. The Carnival will then move to Sandown Park for the TAB Melbourne Cup series and conclude with the Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup (515m) and Bold Trease (715m) on Friday 29 November. The Metro Carnival will also incorporate races for greyhounds of all grades, allowing more people and greyhounds to be involved in Australian greyhound racing’s richest carnival.
GREAT CHASE
RANKING MEETINGS
The 2019 TAB Great Chase race series commences on Friday 4 October and concludes with the final at The Meadows on Wednesday 23rd October. To be eligible Greyhounds must be Victorian bred and trained with 1–5 wins. See below for more information or for a full list of conditions go to grv.org.au/tab-great-chase/race-series
Due to recent low nominations, effective Saturday 5 October - all ‘floating’ Saturday twilight and Geelong Tuesday meetings will be changed from Tier 3 to 200+ Rank Limit meetings at half stakes. This change is aimed at increasing nominations and field sizes at these meetings and improving racing opportunities of the current racing population. The first 200+ rank limit meeting will be held at Bendigo on Saturday 5 October.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: NOTICE Please note that GOTBA Vic’s annual general meeting will this year be held on Sunday 10 November 2019 at Sandown Greyhound Racing Club (upstairs) from 6pm.
GOTBA REPORT
The current schedule is as follows
We remain in the midst of a challenging time in the sport of greyhound racing in Australia. While it is easy to focus solely on ourselves in Victoria, in many respects we operate in an Australian industry. At the Nationals in Western Australia attendees at some of the conference events heard of various key issues and challenges from expanding upon favourable community attitudes towards greyhound racing to ensuring a robustly commercial and healthy industry Australia-wide. We think the latter is particularly important.
5.45pm: Sign in / Sign up 6.00pm: Annual General Meeting Commences 6.45pm: Light Supper 7.30pm: Guest Speaker Further short presentation by Lynton Hogan: The Code of Practice: Are you ready? GOTBA EHMP and records presentation Q & A. Copies of GOTBA Vic’s Code materials will be available at the meeting.
Participants are the key to all of this. Without them, without all of their hard work and risk, there is no sport of greyhound racing. Participants ought to be at the centre, with the greyhounds themselves, of all strategic endeavours in the administration of the sport Australia-wide.
The President’s & Treasurer’s Reports will be read and there will be an election of committee members. Up to four committee members will be appointed: Lynton Hogan, Karen Leek and Jason Sharp are current committee members standing for reelection. Sandra Reed is retiring and not seeking re-election.
With this in mind, I call upon you to join us. We are stronger together: this year we have had input into and influence over a variety of regulatory and other matters for the benefit of the participant. We hope in the next few months to see certain of our 2018/19 efforts for participants in our three focus areas (participant voice, prize money and code of practice) show further results.
If you have been a member for at least the last 12 months, you can nominate for the Committee. Simply complete the nomination form and return by Sunday 27 October, 2019. Forms can be downloaded from the GOTBA website www.gotbav.org.au - or you can request a form to be sent via phone/SMS on 0423 357 620 or email gotbav@gmail.com.
Lynton Hogan President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.
All owners, trainers and breeders are invited to attend the AGM but non-members must apply for membership and pay the joining fee on the night or beforehand. Members who attend with persons who join as members on the night may be eligible for subscription discounts or dispensation.
WHAT IS THE GOTBA?

GOTBA Committee: Lynton Hogan (President), Robert Britton & Sandra Reed (Co-Vice Presidents), Gayle Osbourne (Secretary), John Reid, Karen Leek, Geoff Miles, Stan Ralph and Jess Spoljaric (General Committee).
GOTBA REPORT
Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the preentry assessment sessions are now booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au.
Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au
All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: ■■ have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and ■■ not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.
GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.
Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently.
