As you are aware, the Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula, has appointed Peita Duncan as Chair of Greyhound Racing Victoria and re-appointed Emmett Dunne to the GRV Board and I strongly welcome both appointments. I have worked closely with Peita for over four years now and her comprehensive experience in both greyhound racing and board and executive management roles combined with her passionate commitment to our sport will make her a great Chair. I also congratulate Emmett on his reappointment to the GRV Board where his expertise in key areas such as integrity has been invaluable. And following Greg Miller’s announcement of his retirement as Sandown Park’s CEO, I’d like to thank him on behalf of GRV for his great work in the role since 2010. He led and played a key role in a range of initiatives that drove both the growth of Sandown and of the sport in general, including the Speed Star series, the Launching Pad sweepstakes, National Greyhound Draft and Greyhound Clubs Australia. And of course, continuing to develop the TAB Melbourne Cup as the sport’s premiere event and Sandown as one of the world’s leading greyhound racing clubs. It has been a great pleasure to work with Greg and the team he has built up at Sandown and I wish him all the best for the future. I am pleased to announce that GRV has partnered with other greyhound racing jurisdictions to present a new one-hour greyhound racing television program, called the Thrill Of The Chase. It’s a truly national approach to in depth coverage of the sport that focuses on the greyhounds as the star athletes that they are. The five-part series is hosted by SEN’s Jack Heverin alongside Liz Whelan and James Van de Maat and with GRV’s own Molly Haines doing a regular segment on Australia’s best former champion greyhounds. It will run from 10 - 11 am each Sunday starting 3 November through to 1 December 2019 on 7 Mate and I encourage everyone to watch this inside view of the world of Australian greyhound racing. In other news, GRV’s 2018-19 Annual Report was tabled in Parliament on 17 October and is available online at grv.org.au/about-us/grv-annual-reports and you can read more

GRV has now completed delivery of a suite of information and support initiatives to help participants prepare for the introduction of the Code of Practice on 1 January 2020. The latest initiative participants should be aware of is a guide to using the online Greyhound Record. This gives each Greyhound an eHealth record on FastTrack from birth to retirement and you can find out more about this at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/codeof-practice which includes videos on how a participant can use the Greyhound Record. I’d like to thank all Victoria’s greyhound racing clubs for their work here which included hosting Code information sessions attended by around 550 participants, providing support for participants in completing their EHMP plans and declarations and in generally spreading the word and providing valuable feedback on Code implementation issues. Looking ahead on the track, it will be another busy November with the Hume Cup, Silver Bullet, Topgun and Shootout and of course the Melbourne Cup carnival. You will also notice that GRV will be stepping up promotion of such major events and the sport itself as part of our sharpened commercial focus. During 2019-20, GRV will have a renewed commitment to growing our customer base to boost revenue. This will be reinvested in the sport and increase returns to participants so you can expect to see some new marketing initiatives rolled out over the coming year to get more people involved in our code.

GRV Chair Peita Duncan and TAB’s GM Wagering Trevor Parkes with the giant $10,000 cheque which was won by Rangeview Private Nursing Home from Wangaratta.
The great chase, where everybody wins. BY PHIL WEIR
On a day when only the smiles outshone the warm sun, the Great Chase Grand Final at The Meadows was, in the words of GRV Chair Peita Duncan, “The best event we do all year.”
Donna Logan, who organised the team of eight, said they’ve attended all 17 finals, and this is their second win. “We love everything about the day. Not just for us but for everyone.”
More than 500 people from 50 community groups made trips from all parts of Victoria filled the venue, and an extra marquee, and lapped up the incredible variety of music, dancing, balloons, magic, face painting and food; but the real excitement was saved for the dogs.
How will the winnings be spent? “We have a committee the residents are involved with, so they will decide. It will all go towards the residents. We did think about a big night on the town or heading to the airport and running away for a while!”
For the past two months, each Victorian Greyhound club has hosted their own Great Chase where more than $24,000 has been won by local community groups, all of whom were invited to this Grand Final event; and by the looks of it, most of them took up the opportunity. Eight groups were drawn for the main event, each allocated a dog and with it the chance to take home the $10,000 first prize. This year, with help from their allocated dog Simon Told Helen, it was Rangeview Private Nursing Home, which provides aged and disability care in Wangaratta.
4
It’s certainly an inclusive crowd that love the event; another passionate team, albeit a slightly younger age group, was the Kalianna School from Bendigo. The specialist school caters for children aged from five to eighteen. The group at the final consisted of 10 to 12-year-olds. Josh arranged the team of 13 students, in the 10-12 age range. He said Kalianna had been involved with the Great Chase for about ten years. “The kids love the event, especially the balloons and face painting. It’s a great day out.” They were also fairly keen on the presence of GRV ambassador Brent ‘Boomer’ Harvey, who handled a barrage of football questions and probably inspired a few champions of the future.
FEATURE THE GREAT CHASE, WHERE EVERYBODY WINS
Although they went home without the cash, if the proliferation of balloon swords and painted faces was any indication the bus ride back to Bendigo would be a load of fun. Second place, backing Who Told Stevie, was The Bridge Connects group from Cranbourne, which provides services, information and resources to people with disability and their families. Also in the money was the winner of this year’s Warrnambool leg of the Great Chase, WDEA Socialisers.

A strong year for Victorian greyhound racing BY RENN BARKER More greyhounds re-homed than ever, the highest level of prizemoney and wagering recorded, Australia’s first Integrity in Sports conference and a new mobile form guide were some of the highlights in Greyhound Racing Victoria’s (GRV) 2018-19 Annual Report, tabled in the Victorian Parliament on 17 October and available online at: grv.org.au/about-us/grvannual-reports.
All these strong outcomes in 2018-19 means GRV is now well placed to deliver on its new strategic plan for the next five years. While welfare and integrity remain core priorities, there will be a new stronger commercial focus driven by innovative and digital products to boost customer engagement and generate more revenue for reinvestment in the sport and increased returns to participants.
National wagering turnover on Victorian greyhound racing reached a record $2.37 billion in 2018-19 while a record $46.5 million in prize money and other returns was paid to participants over the year. GRV Chair, Peita Duncan said the strong wagering performance was driven by Victoria’s ability to offer a professional, well-regulated and exciting racing calendar the largest in Australia. “In 2018-19, GRV strengthened its racing promotion work with the introduction of a new brand for the sport and the release of the Watchdog mobile form guide app.” Ms Duncan said. In 2018-19, 2631 greyhounds were rehomed by GRV’s Greyhound Adoption Program, other re-homing agencies and directly by participants - up about 2% on the previous year and up almost 100% since 2014-15. Euthanasia numbers fell by approximately 28% over the year and continued a significant downward trend since 2014-15. Race fatalities were down about 23% on 2017-18 and race injuries also fell during the year and are down 17% since 2014-15. along with a major fall in euthanasia and track fatalities rates. “Through a combination of education, regulation, investment in track infrastructure and initiatives like our Safe Racing Program, GRV is working to deliver the best possible environment for racing greyhounds in Victoria from birth to retirement,” Ms Duncan said. GRV CEO Alan Clayton said increased wagering and income meant GRV was also able to raise prizemoney and other returns for participants to a record $46.5 million in 2018-19. “GRV’s standing as a leading racing industry regulator was also highlighted during the year by hosting Australia’s first major conference in integrity in sport, held in Melbourne in August 2018 and which attracted leading national and international speakers on a range of integrity issues,” Mr Clayton said.
The Stats ■ 4,300 Full Time Equivalent jobs ■ $46.5 MILLION In prizemoney and other returns to participants ■ 2,631 Greyhounds rehomed ■ $550 MILLION In taxes (across all Victorian racing codes) ■ 1,189 Race meetings ■ 698 LITTERS & 4,533 PUPPIES Registered ■ $540 MILLION In economic contribution ■ 15,000 Participants ■ $2.37 BILLION In national wagering turnover Data: Size and Scope of the Victorian Racing Industry, IER 2018.

New GRV board chair flags advancement BY PHIL WEIR Following the announcement yesterday by the Racing Minister Martin Pakula, newly appointed GRV Board Chair Peita Duncan has been quick to provide some insight into the matters the board will be addressing in the future. Speaking to RSN’s Gareth Hall, Peita acknowledged former Chair Bernie Carolan, who she said was “fantastic in the reform journey, and a terrific board member.” The next phase will include a greater emphasis on growing the sport. “I’ve been around greyhounds since I was eight years old. My grandfather was a professional punter and it was a regular thing – Monday nights at the dogs. That eventually turned into an invitation to join the Meadows board, and then the GRV board.” Ms Duncan reflected on the current state of the sport in Victoria. “Integrity and welfare are the core of our sport, and I think in that regard we are the best in Australia, if not the world.” Looking forward, Ms Duncan said the board was working toward greater returns for participants.
“The people in our industry work so hard; they are up every morning and working every day for their passion. We want to improve the returns they are getting for that effort, through increased wagering and therefore better prizemoney,’’ Ms Duncan said. “We’re keen to attract more young people, and we’re looking carefully at how we can provide more facilities. “Sandown is already building a rearing facility in Gippsland, The Meadows has just opened a galloping paddock, and GRV is examining just how we can help young people get properties. “At the same time we want the existing participants to be doing what they love for the next 20 years and beyond.” Ms Duncan isn’t shy about her approach. “I go faster than a Maserati. I’m very honest – what you see is what you get. I love getting amongst the action and staying in touch with the trainers and owners, because they’re feeling the joy and stress of this lifestyle. My door’s always open.” To listen to the full interview go to: soundcloud.com/ greyhoundracingvic/peita-duncan-at-rsn-161019

Hooked on Hype BY ANDREW COPLEY
Young superstar greyhound Hooked On Scotch has continued his meteoric rise by taking out the $67,000 Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup (460m) at the Beckley Centre on Friday 25 October. Notching his sixth straight win, the Jason Thompson-trained speedster settled in second position, four lengths behind early pacesetter Runnin’ Royalty, who was the fastest heat winner last week. Hooked On Scotch ($2.30 Fav) won by a length to Runnin’ Royalty ($4.00), with Peter Galo ($6.40) third in the slick time of 25.31sec. Dubbed the fastest greyhound on the planet, Hooked On Scotch has now won eight of his 12 career starts, and he has
already won four major events including the Speed Star, the State-of-Origin, Adelaide Cup and the Geelong Gold Cup, while he has amassed $165,935 in prize money. Darren Puleio, who bred and owns Hooked On Scotch in partnership with his father Michael, is thrilled with the current hype surrounding Hooked On Scotch. “It’s so good to hear people talk about him. He has brought a lot of positivity and excitement to the track and that’s what racing is all about,” Darren said. Earlier in the night, champion Lara stayer Tornado Tears (Robert Britton) ran 3rd to Blue Shadows in his first ever run at his local track.

GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT
BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSc, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING
VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The new Code of Practice will require all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination from 1 January 2020. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are slightly more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine.
Third party pet retirements to go into pending status on 15 November 2019 A third-party pet retirement is when the greyhound is retired as a pet to either a re-homing group or any person who is not the last registered racing owner. It is planned that on 15 November 2019, a change will be made to FastTrack such that these retirements will be placed into a ‘PENDING’ status until the new (pet) owner’s details are verified by GRV. There will be no change to the retirement process on FastTrack, however, the racing owner will: 1.
note that the greyhound’s status will remain as Racing or Unnamed and the greyhound remains in their MyDogs list until GRV confirms the pending retirement; and
2. receive an automated email advising them of this. Once the new owner’s details are verified by GRV, and the retirement has been finalised on FastTrack by GRV, the greyhound’s status will change to ‘Retired and the greyhound will move to your MyRetiredDogs list. At this point the racing owner will receive another email to advise them of this. GRV will make contact if the new owner’s details cannot be confirmed within 15 working days. To ensure GRV can confirm the retirement as quickly as possible we ask you to ensure you get all the new owners contact details and let them know GRV will be in touch. New owner details required by GRV are listed on the FastTrack retirement screen and are FULL NAME, COMPLETE ADDRESS (including post code), PHONE NUMBER and EMAIL ADDRESS (if they have one). In addition, an ALTERNATIVE CONTACT NAME and PHONE NUMBER are required (if the new owner can’t be reached in the event the greyhound is found loose). For example, the alternative contact can be a friend or family member.
Hot Weather With summer approaching very quickly, it is time to think about your greyhounds during the hot weather. Greyhounds have an optimal internal body temperature of 38.0 - 39.5ºC. According to scientific literature, the air temperature of a greyhound’s environment should ideally be between 23 - 30º C (but definitely between 10ºC and 35ºC) to maintain the greyhound’s internal temperature without the greyhound having to use excess energy. Air temperatures outside this zone require dogs to use more energy to maintain their internal body temperature. It is therefore vital to maintain the internal temperature of greyhound kennel buildings and transport vehicles within the appropriate temperature zone, and this is particularly important on race days when excess energy expenditure can impact on race performance. On warm and hot days, ensure your greyhounds: ■
have ready access to lots of cool drinking water in non-spillable containers;
■
have access to shade at all times when outside;
■
have good air flow through kennel buildings and/or well insulated buildings;
■
have covered or shaded concrete walkways to prevent burning of pads when walking greyhounds around properties/racetracks;
■
have access to cooling vests or only exercise in the coolest parts of the day; **
■
have access to airconditioned transport; and
■
are monitored regularly.
GRV has recently updated the Hot Weather Policy and Transport Policy regarding the management of race meetings, trials and transport where the air temperature is 32ºC or above. For more information visit the GRV’s Care and Standards webpage https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/ policies-and-guidance/. In addition to requirements in the Transport Policy, be aware that when the temperature is 24ºC a closed vehicle in the sun can reach up to 35ºC in 10 minutes and 50ºC in 30 minutes. ** Cooling vests are available at all tracks. Cooling vests should only be used for a maximum of 60 minutes after first being put on; using them for longer can cause the vest to dry up and risk heat stroke.

With the advent of the beautiful spring weather over the past month, it is time to turn your thoughts to the coming summer. Weather forecasting is predicting a hot dry summer; so now is the time to get your fire plans in order and avoid leaving things until the last minute. Start getting your property ready: ☐
Prepare or review your fire plan, including evacuation options; if you choose to take your greyhounds with you, contact your local Municipal Council to find out which of their evacuation centres will allow animals and add the address and details to your plan
☐
Remove doormats from around the house and kennel areas
☐
Move combustible outdoor furniture and other items from decks, up against, or under the home or your kennel area
☐
Move pot plants a few metres from the home or kennel area
☐
Double check that gas bottles are anchored securely with the relief valves pointing away from any flammable materials
☐
Mow your lawns or slash long grass in surrounding paddocks, yards, alongside slipping tracks etc
☐
On bigger properties, a clearing of about 10 metres of well-mown grass around your home and kennel block is advisable
☐
Walk around your home and remove piles of fine fuels such as leaves. It will probably be where embers will land
☐
Check your gutters to make sure leaves haven’t built up – check your home, kennels and other shedding
☐
Make sure you remove any fuels from around windows and doors. These are the most vulnerable parts of the home and kennel area
☐
Make sure trees on your property are healthy with no dead limbs and no vegetation underneath them
☐
Ensure your insurance is sufficient and current
☐
Prepare a greyhound evacuation kit, including, leads, muzzles, bedding, first aid kit, food and water bowls, 3 days of dry food and bottles of water. Make sure you include any medication your greyhound may need. Have your kit in a central location so it can be quickly loaded into your car
☐
If you have transport crates, ensure they are clean, in good working order and easy to access
☐
Practice your emergency evacuation plan at least once before the hot, dry weather arrives.

RACING UPDATE BY GREG KERR, GENERAL MANAGER, RACING
In my first couple of weeks it’s clear to me that we have a shortage of dogs, which is severely impacting on our ability to run eight-dog fields.
calendar dates and individual races, to ensure there are analytics to back up any of the changes that might be identified.
Clearly this impacts the graders who are doing their best to make fields from the nominations received, but nevertheless 98.9% of all nominations received are getting a start.
The next is grading. It’s obvious that there are issues with the current grading policy based on comments that are already filtering through to me, and these issues are exacerbated by the current shortage of racing dogs.
We do anticipate this easing, as there are good indicators that new starters are up, litters are on the rise, and named dogs are starting to lift; therefore I’m sure we will see better numbers soon. I have prioritised two projects; the calendar and grading. The racing calendar will undergo a comprehensive review to ensure we are maximising turnovers. The review will take a deep look into current meeting placement, individual race times, and days of the week on which meetings have traditionally been held. GRV is currently developing race modelling, which will enable the team to mock-up any possible changes to the
2019 VW
The timing of a review is right, while we rebuild our racing population to get something that is more fit for purpose and that serves our participants fairly. Both projects will require comprehensive consultation with stakeholders to ensure we capture the frustrations and possible solutions. Updates and consultation details will appear on the GRV website and Greyhound Monthly as we roll these projects out. I intend to be at the tracks a lot, so I’ll be accessible to anyone who wants to chat with me about these projects and any other matters that you would like to share.

BY ANDREW COPLEY Dyna Patty, one of the best female sprinters of recent years who netted 23 wins and $648,000 in prize money, has been retired for breeding. The winner of the Australian Cup, Maturity Classic and Warrnambool Cup will have her first mating to 1997 Melbourne Cup hero, Roanokee. Dyna Patty’s position as the number one greyhound in Andrea Dailly’s powerful kennel has since been assumed by young gun Shima Shine.
Dyna Patty retires as a dual Group 1 winner and sub 29 seconds winner at Sandown Park
Shima Shine was the runner-up in last month’s Million Dollar Chase at Wentworth Park to local greyhound Good Odds Harada, while Victorian Get It Gizmo ran third.

DON’T WAIT, APPLY FOR DNA TODAY! GRV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early.
14
For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia.
Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet 3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration.
GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab. For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

CODE OF PRACTICE UPDATE The Code Information Session series came to an end during October after 14 different sessions, held across the state over 3 months, were attended by nearly 600 participants. Participants requiring copies of the Code, GRV’s EHMP or any of the support forms and booklets will need to visit the Code of Practice webpage (greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/codeof-practice) to download them or ask for them at their local club. To make it easier for participants, all of the support forms, including the EHMP, allow information to be directly entered into the form before saving or printing. EHMPs completed this way can be saved and then emailed direct to your vet for review and approval.
Vet review and approval of EHMPS Most clubs plan to hold at least one EHMP Vet Review & Approve Session, however due to the limited number of specialist vets being available to attend these sessions, participants should consider having their EHMPs reviewed and approved by one of their usual greyhound vets to ensure that it is in place by January 1, 2020. Shepparton, The Meadows, Ballarat, Warrnambool and Cranbourne Clubs currently have Vet sessions scheduled for November, while Traralgon have a session organised in December. For more information or to book an appointment, contact your preferred Club direct. Upcoming appointment venues and dates are posted every Thursday on FastTrack.
Code participant support program feedback To evaluate the success of the Program in helping participants understand the Code and what is required to be Code compliant, GRV will email participants a link to a short, anonymous survey that will take around 5 minutes to complete. This feedback is an essential tool for GRV when developing and delivering effective and appropriate communication, learning and support programs in the future.

If you are a GOTBA Member read the help material available in the Member section of our website – www.gotbav.org.au. This includes things to consider changing in your EHMP. We will soon have several example EHMPs available. We have hard copy records material. Attend our AGM where more info will be available. If you are not a GOTBA Vic member, join.
GOTBA REPORT At the risk of repeating myself ad nauseam from other reports this year: The Code of Practice is coming. It is almost here. GOTBA Vic was primarily responsible for moving the Code away from its widely recognised poor first draft. We are responsible for many of the changes – e.g. the grandfathering provision that allows facilities to remain in place to the end of their effective life in most cases – that make it even possible to comply. We say this though the Code remains far from perfect. But, again, it is here and as a sport and as a participant group, it’s vital to engage with what it requires and for everyone to do as best as possible to comply with it. When it starts, any concerns with its operation in practice, including how it is enforced, need to be raised. With us. With GRV. With Government. In the meantime, be ready. Get your Establishment Health Management Plan done. Book a vet appointment to get it signed or attend a club session. Look at GRV’s new Fasttrack records keeping material. Start using it, or your own version.
Remember, for many participants, a simple ‘tick the box’ approach to your EHMP and records may save time now but may not help you when you need to comply with obligations you could have changed to something more practical when the Code commences. Aim to be completely ready ASAP. That aim should include working as per the Code before 1 January 2020.
NEW MEMBER ON GRV’S BOARD Congratulations to Ray Bartolo on his recent appointment to the GRV Board. As a participant organisation, it should come as no surprise that we support having current, active participants on decision making bodies that run a sport on which so many participants rely. Good decision-making needs diverse inputs, but it must have immediate input from those most affected by the decisions that are made also. GOTBA Vic lobbied government for quite some time for such an appointment. It is well made. The appointment is another example of GOTBA Vic working for participants and achieving outcomes.
Lynton Hogan President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.

GOTBA REPORT
Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the preentry assessment sessions are now booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au.
Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au
All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: ■ have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and ■ not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.
GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.
Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently.
