EDITOR-IN-CHIEF: ANDREW COPLEY MANAGING EDITOR: PHIL WEIR Greyhound Monthly Victoria (GMV) magazine is produced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), the governing body of greyhound racing in this state. GRV strongly encourages all Victorian greyhound racing participants - in particular breeders and trainers - to take the time to read each issue of GMV to ensure they are across relevant key issues. Each edition of GMV aims to provide an overview of key happenings in relation to Victorian greyhound racing that occurred during the previous month, as well as promoting significant and relevant upcoming activities and events.

I’d like to congratulate Whiskey Riot and connections on a great win in the 2019 TAB Melbourne Cup. And I thank Sandown Park for their great work again in presenting one of the world’s greatest greyhound races. Those who were there may have noticed the new double lure system which is now operational at all Victorian clubs except Geelong, following a six-month trial period. Trial feedback was overwhelmingly positive about how the double lure reduces bunching and improves sightlines for greyhounds while not impacting on performance and audience experience. I’d like to thank all the clubs involved for working with GRV on trialing the new system, which is an important step in improving race safety. Things are also moving ahead in Traralgon, where the contract for construction of the new track is now out to tender and includes civil engineering, railing, lighting and electrical systems and irrigation works. The GRV Board is expected to sign off on the approved tender by the end of the year with work scheduled to begin in early 2020. I’d like to take the opportunity here to thank everyone who worked on and watched ‘Thrill Of The Chase’, the national TV series about greyhound racing that was screened on 7mate over the past five Sunday mornings. It provided a comprehensive roundup of news about the sport while also taking viewers behind the scenes to find out more about how these great athletes prepare for the track and life afterwards. It was also a great example of the states coming together to develop a truly national brand for the sport and we are now all actively exploring how to build on this initiative for more Australia-wide promotional and marketing activities. Turning to matters off the track, GRV recently suspended three trainers in relation to practices suspected to be in breach of greyhound racing rules while investigations continue, pending formal charges. Following this there was significant media coverage across various TV, online, radio and print channels. As you are likely aware, I conducted several radio interviews on 13 November 2019, making key points such as:

Greyhound Racing Victoria 46-50 Chetwynd Street West Melbourne, Victoria, 3003 Hours: Monday - Friday: 8:30am - 4:30pm Phone: (03) 8329 1100 Fax:

(03) 8329 1000 / (03) 8329 1001

ABN:

It was GRV that identified and is resolving the issue in its capacity as a professional regulator.

These practices were the work of a small minority who do not represent all other participants.

There is zero tolerance within the sport for such behaviour.

The Racing Minister’s strong statement of support was also welcomed, providing a positive message to those in our industry as well as the broader community. This matter does highlight the need for GRV, the Clubs and all participants to continue working together to protect the high levels of professionalism and integrity of the sport. I ask that you continue to promote compliance and to not hesitate in reporting any suspicious activity to GRV’s Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit. Another important issue we all need to be aware of is that a hot summer with a high bushfire risk has been forecast for Victoria so it’s vital that participants in regions that could be affected have fire management plans in place. Advice about developing fire plans can be sourced from local councils, Emergency Management Victoria and the CFA. It’s also important that you are up to date with GRV’s Hot Weather and Transport Policies which are online at greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/policies-andguidance As this is the last edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria for 2019, I’d like to wish you all a safe and happy holiday season, followed by a new year with plenty of great racing action supported by some exciting new promotional initiatives in 2020.

Jack Riewoldt, Boomer Harvey and GRV Chair Peita Duncan

Legends aplenty at Cup lunch BY PHIL WEIR

On the eve of the greatest greyhound race in the world the TAB Melbourne Cup Lunch was held at The Aviary, on the roof of Crown Casino, bathed in sunshine. Trainers, owners and breeders lunched with sporting idols, industry leaders and the media, hearing from experts and fans about what the sport means to them; but mostly, who would win. No surprises was the strong support for the favourite, Hooked On Scotch. Hooked On Scotch was also lauded on his new track record in the Cup heats, with breeder and part-owner Darren Puleio receiving – appropriately – a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label Scotch. AFL legends Brent ‘Boomer’ Harvey and Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt added their predictions; the latter going with his team colours. “Hopefully the yellow and black (Western

4

Envoy) can salute again as it did in the last Saturday in September,” Riewoldt said. Boomer was with the favourite but added “I always like the box number 4, so maybe Hooked On Scotch and Flynn for an Exacta.” In his phantom call of the race, however, James Van der Maat called the first ever eight-way photo finish, to the delight of the crowd assembled. Radio stations 1116 SEN and RSN 927 broadcast live from the event which ramped up promotion along with extensive coverage across social media. Musical entertainment came from more legends; Dragon, now approaching 50 years in the business with more hits than Muhammad Ali.

The experts predict: James Van der Maat, Gareth Hall, TAB’s Trent Langskail, Jason Adams.

Gareth Hall and George Farrugia from RSN, broadcasting live with GRV Chair Peita Duncan and Boomer Harvey.

Two Tiger legends. GRV Board member Emmett Dunne (1980 premiership player) and Jack Riewoldt (2017, 2019 premierships)

GRV Chair Peita Duncan with special guests the Uren family, who are part of the greyhound racing family through GRV’s Chase for Charity promotion.

How the race was won: Tornado Tears found himself in unfamiliar territory as we had to go back 40 starts to find the last time he didn’t start favourite. He was mid-field throughout much of the final before finding an opening on the rail in the home straight and storming to victory to snare his fifth Group 1.

How the race was won: Jumped straight to the lead from Box 3 and was pressured throughout by outsider Western Envoy ($30.80), but he dug deep to win in a photo finish. Hooked On Scotch, the $2.10Fav after setting a new track record in his heat running 28.94sec, flew home late to be beaten by half a length. This was Whiskey Riot’s first group win after being placed three times at Group 1 level.

The Greyhound Racing Integrity Unit (GRIU) have now taken over the reins for all Code related participant support, with Ken Waixel the contact for Code related queries. Ken was part of the Code Information Session presentation team and he will continue to monitor and respond to Code Support Line calls or emails until Code of Practice is firmly established in participants’ day to day operations. During late November and early December, Ken will be available at various race meetings to answer any questions you might have on Code. Please check FastTrack every Monday for dates and venues. Speaking of Code assistance, the Code Support Line has received a lot of similar calls asking: ■

“My EHMP is signed, how do I submit it to GRV?”, or

“How many EHMPs do we need to do? There are X (number of) trainers on the property….”.

Code Feedback Survey Thank you to those participants who completed the Code of Practice Participant Learning and Support Survey last month. The information provided will help GRV when developing participant communication, learning and support programs in the future. For those that missed the survey but would like to offer feedback on this or any other matter, please call or email the Feedback Office.

CODE OF PRACTICE

EHMP Declaration GRV’s approach to Code implementation focused on making compliance as easy as possible for participants. This resulted in Animal Welfare Victoria agreeing that participants only need to declare they have a suitable EHMP in place that has been approved by a vet, rather than submitting their EHMP to GRV. To enable this, an online form was created where participants could make this declaration, this is the EHMP Declaration. To access the EHMP Declaration, go to greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/code-of-practice/

The Code webpage has a frequently asked question section that can be printed or saved which provides the answers to these questions and many others. From the Code webpage FAQs: Q: Once the Vet has approved my EHMP, what happens next? A: You will need to complete the GRV EHMP Declaration online. Q: Who needs a copy of my EHMP? 1.

In the grey EHMP Declaration box, click the red SUBMIT button. The online declaration form will open.

Q. Does every person at a property have to complete an EHMP?

2. Enter the required information in the boxes provided.

A: No. Only the Person in Charge needs to complete a vet approved EHMP for their establishment.

3. Tick the Yes box after the declaration and click ‘Submit’. 4. You have now lodged your declaration.

Vet review and approval of EHMPs Participants are encouraged to use their regular vet to review and approve EHMPs. A special visit may not be required, so it’s worth checking with your vet to find out what works best for both of you in getting this done. Traralgon, Shepparton, Horsham and Bendigo Clubs have Vet sessions scheduled for December. For more information or to book an appointment, contact your preferred club directly. Upcoming appointment venues and dates are posted every Thursday on FastTrack.

Please do not post or email completed EHMPs to GRV. Codehelp has received several emails containing a written statement or photos of signed EHMPs from participants, thinking they are doing the right thing. Completing the online EHMP Declaration is the only way to make the required declaration agreed to by Animal Welfare Victoria. If you require assistance, take your signed EHMP to your local Club and ask one of the staff to help you. For Code assistance, call the Code Support Line on 1300 144 360 or email codehelp@grv.org.au.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA DECEMBER 2019

A: As the Person in Charge, you must keep a copy of your approved EHMP at your property, to be made available on request. Do not send the EHMP to GRV.

Another big day out at Bendigo

BY ANDREW COPLEY

November was a big month for San Remo baker Pat Derubeis, who trained his first city winner when Almapa Berisha scored at Sandown on 14 November.

The 2019 National Greyhound Draft was broadcast live on 7Mate’s ‘Thrill Of The Chase’ on 17 November. The innovative concept provides an easy and affordable pathway into greyhound ownership with eight teams involving many of Australia’s most successful trainers each selecting three impeccably bred young pups not yet 12 months of age. First pick in the draft went to Victorian trainer Ashlee Terry, who selected a Barcia Bale x Rhonda Rocks pup. National Greyhound Draft expert, George Farrugia said Ashlee’s pick was a shrewd selection. “Rhonda Rocks has produced a really successful litter to Fernando Bale, which includes dual Group 1 winner Sennachie. And he’s not a one-off because the litter has won over $600,000 in prize money,” Farrugia said. People could buy into any of the eight teams for just $1200, giving them a 2% share in all three of their team’s pups, with no more to pay. Now in its second year, the National Greyhound Draft gives people access to pups so well bred they are not normally available on the open market, and a small handful of shares remain available for purchase. GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT

BY DR GAVIN GOBLE BVSC, GENERAL MANAGER, GREYHOUND WELFARE AND RE-HOMING

VACCINATIONS FOR GREYHOUNDS The new Code of Practice will require all greyhounds to have a current C5 vaccination from 1 January 2020. Please speak to your veterinarian about when your greyhounds are next due for a vaccination. Just a reminder that the vaccination requirements for acceptance into GAP are slightly more specific, so please check with GRV if you are planning to get a vaccination for this purpose. These requirements are also on the GAP page of this magazine.

Third party pet retirements to go into pending status early December

Troublesome barking? Are there effective alternatives to barking muzzles?

FastTrack will be updated this month so that third-party pet retirements (retirements to re-homing group or any person who is not the last registered racing owner) go into a ‘PENDING’ status until the new (pet) owner’s details are verified by GRV. There is no change to the retirement process on FastTrack, however, the racing owner will note that the greyhound’s status remains as Racing or Unnamed and it remains in their MyDogs list until GRV confirms the pending retirement; and they will receive an automated email advising them of this. Once the new owner’s details are verified by GRV, and the retirement has been finalised on FastTrack by GRV.

Excessive barking is one of the most common disruptions to a greyhound kennel facility. Often it is can be only one or two greyhounds who bark excessively, but their barking behaviour can influence and even teach younger dogs to bark. This can create a stressful kennel environment (for dogs and people) and nuisance complaints with neighbours.

To ensure GRV can confirm the retirement as quickly as possible, GRV requires all the new owner’s contact details; FULL NAME, COMPLETE ADDRESS (including post code), PHONE NUMBER and EMAIL ADDRESS (if they have one). In addition, an ALTERNATIVE CONTACT NAME and PHONE NUMBER are required (if the new owner can’t be reached in the event the greyhound is found loose); for example, the alternative contact can be a friend or family member.

However, there are risks associated with the use of barking muzzles as they prevent greyhounds from drinking, panting and, more importantly, vomiting. Several deaths have been reported in greyhounds and other breeds of dogs where barking muzzles were used unsupervised.

GRV Workshops in 2020 GRV is continuing with the practical workshops to support participants and their greyhounds in establishing and maintaining a successful career in the sport. Current topics include: ■ ■

Greyhound Injury and Illness Management workshops already delivered by Dr Chris Boemo. Maximising Re-homing Success workshops to be delivered by GAP’s Senior Behaviourist, Diana Rayment.

In a kennel where there are excessive barkers, the noise can be stressful and interfere with all the greyhounds’ rest time. This, in turn, can interfere with learning and race performance. If you can get to the bottom of why your greyhounds are barking, you can put in place steps to reduce the barking triggers and address the barking response. Some of the common reasons for excessive barking include: ■

boredom resulting from a lack of company, exercise or mental stimulation;

anxiety or excitement;

hypervigilance can lead to excessive barking triggered by an unusual noise or movement, such as leaves falling off a tree;

fear from loud noises such as thunder or fireworks or alerting you to an intruder;

a medical condition;

a physical reason such as heat, cold, hunger or thirst; or

Nutrition for Success delivered by Dr Ray Ferguson.

Participants interested in attending should contact Greyhound Welfare and Re-homing at GRV or book through greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/workshops.

10

When there are excessive barkers in a kennel, participants often look for effective and quick solutions to reduce or silence barking behaviour. In some cases, they will use anti-barking muzzles or other similar anti-barking devices to prevent barking, particularly during feeding times.

frustration arising from repeated exposure to other greyhounds through barriers, or while watching an exciting activity through a fence or barrier (e.g. when other dogs are undergoing training within sight of the barking greyhound).

Making the kennel environment interesting, where change is associated with positive experiences, will help to minimise the triggers for barking. Training greyhounds to settle down for rest during specific periods of the day will reduce barking behaviour and improve learning and performance; for example, music can be used to encourage them to rest. Making kennel life a positive experience can be achieved through: ■

a gradual introduction to the kennel environment;

progressive interaction with compatible greyhounds;

multiple enrichment items to avoid boredom;

exposure to a range of different people in a calm, friendly way; and

gradual, positive, exposure to confined, small kennels or crates and periods of isolation.

Our staff at GAP are always on hand to offer advice should you need it, and GRV will shortly be publishing a booklet on managing excessive barking.

Some tips for responding or modifying excessive barking? It is natural for your greyhound to try and communicate with you and other dogs whether it is for attention or other reasons identified early. The key to training is to ignore the behaviour and reward them when they are not barking. Try this approach to deal with barking in the kennel environment where a greyhound may be seeking attention:

STEP ONE: ■

Start by making sure you have plenty of tasty food rewards

Slowly walk along the kennel block or yards that you are going to focus on

WELFARE AND RE-HOMING REPORT

STEP TWO: ■

Walk slowly up and down the kennel block.

For greyhounds who remain calm and quiet, toss a treat into their kennel.

Ignore the greyhounds who bark.

STEP THREE: ■

Where a greyhound is barking, if they stop, even just to take a breath, throw a treat through the pen door on to the floor

Proceed to the next pen

STEP FOUR: ■

Be quick! Good timing is vital

No dog can bark endlessly

Catching those times when the dog isn’t barking will provide it with valuable information as to how to earn a treat

STEP FIVE: Repeat the above process until you have made 3-4 laps of the kennel block

Repeat the process multiple times throughout the day

Once the greyhounds begin to show understanding of the training you can proceed to the next level where you pause breifly in front of a kennel with a barking dog and immediately throw a treat in when they stop barking.

REMEMBER TO BE PATIENT, TAKE YOUR TIME AND BE CONSISTENT.

RACING UPDATE BY GREG KERR, GENERAL MANAGER, RACING

Review for grading and coursing

Participant support line Participant wellbeing and support is something that is very close to me, so with that in mind I will be launching the introduction of a support line over the next couple of weeks which will be specifically for our participants. Our participants are one of our greatest assets and this service will be there to support them.

I indicated last month that there would be a review on the current grading guidelines to take a look and evaluate if it is in fact fit for purpose. I am happy to update that the review is now under way and stakeholders are being interviewed to get a good balance of feedback as to what we could consider. In tandem with the grading review, there is also one being done on coursing to see what we can do to best serve this part of the sport while considering the greyhound welfare, integrity, and OH&S issues that come in today’s modern operating environment.

Distance racing I have been a little disappointed at the lack of opportunity and encouragement of distance racing, which was traditionally very strong here in Victoria. My aim is to start reinvigorating distance racing by giving more dogs an opportunity to be conditioned for longer racing in the knowledge there’ll be weekly racing opportunities to aim for. You will see some initiatives start to roll out at Ballarat, The Meadows and Sandown over the next month or so.

Racing population growth I am pleased to see the racing population is on the increase. November saw races with 8 starters rise to 58.3%; average starters per race rose to 7.3; and the percentage of dogs named in November rose to 85%. I am encouraged by these trends and looking forward to them continuing to increase even further over the next couple of months to the point where we will be back close to full fields.

And to those trainers/owners/clubs and GRV staff at the venues that have welcomed me on my visits - thank you!

TRFM Gippsland Festival Of Racing officially launched The media launch for greyhound racing’s 2019-20 Gippsland Festival of Racing was held at Sale GRC, with Crocmedia’s ‘Off The Bench’ radio program broadcasting live for the event, presented by Craig Hutchison and Tim Watson. The upcoming Gippsland Festival of Racing will incorporate several key events including greyhound racing’s Group 1 Sale Cup on Boxing Day and the Group 2 Warragul Cup on 11 January. Clubs also announced their Cup ambassadors as Matthew Lloyd at Sale and Jack Riewoldt at Warragul. The annual Gippsland Festival of Racing has proven to be of great economic benefit to the Gippsland economy, with local greyhounds racing for rich prize money and local suppliers being sourced to stage the various events.

GOTBA REPORT

Peter Johnston (Sale GRC Manager), Craig Hutchinson, Tim Watson and Adrian Scott (Warragul GRC Manager)

If you are not, act immediately.

GOTBA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Thank you to all who attended GOTBA Vic’s annual general meeting held 10 November 2019 at Sandown GRC. My President’s Report, together with a Treasurer’s Report, was circulated on the night; the same is available on GOTBA Vic’s website and has been sent to members by email. The former provides detail on what we have done and achieved in the year that is now almost gone, and the aims in the year ahead. Committee members Lynton Hogan, Karen Leek and Jason Sharp were re-elected to the committee. Attendees received a range of material and a presentation on the path to readiness on the Code of Practice documentation, including an example Establishment Health Management Plan (EHMP). Again, this is available – to members – on our website or by request to the GOTBA Vic secretary (send us an email – gotbav@gmail.com).

CODE By now, persons in charge of properties where non-retired greyhounds, of any age, are kept should be Code ready. By Code ready I mean: EHMP complete and signed by a vet and the person in charge, declaration made to GRV (see GRV website), Vet Agreement in place, establishment records and individual records in use. While legally this is a requirement as of 1 January 2020, you should be there now.

As to the EHMP – print the GRV proforma. Look at GOTBA Vic’s material. Book an appointment with your vet to go through your EHMP. If available, attend a club EHMP session. As to Vet Agreement – recheck your current one. Look at GOTBA Vic’s proforma. If it needs replacing, include that in your vet appointment. Records – individual greyhound records: actively use Fasttrack as updated to record things such as injuries and treatments, have a look at GOTBA Vic’s proforma hard copy individual record to see the types of information that need to be recorded. Establishment records: check GOTBA Vic’s proforma hard copy to see what things should be kept. Ultimately, of course, what really matters is keeping greyhounds responsibly and well. The Code does not change that, but all of us should make every effort to comply with it.

AND ANOTHER THING GOTBA Vic knows just how hard participants work to participate in greyhound racing. Early mornings, late nights, varying rewards. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season – even though many greyhound participants do not get to take holidays (!) – and a happy new year in 2020.

Lynton Hogan President of GOTBA Victoria Inc.

GOTBA REPORT

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the preentry assessment sessions are now booked through Racing Services during office hours on 03 8329 1100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au.

Pre-entry Assessment Booking number: 03 8329 1100 Pre-entry Assessment email: gapbooking@grv.org.au

All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: ■ have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and ■ not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: ■ Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and ■ Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine. The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently.
